Colorectal cancer is a medical condition caused by irregular cell growth in the tissues of the colon or rectum.
Most cases of colorectal cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the colon or rectum, before penetrating into the deeper layer to induce localized tumor.
At the very early stage of colorectal cancer, most patients are asymptomatic due to the very size of the tumor that does not affect the function of the colon or rectum. However, at the advanced stage, the oversize tumor can press on the nearby blood vessels and nerves and affect the organ functioning, leading to severe pain and bleeding and specific symptoms accompanied by the general symptoms shared by other types of cancer.
At this stage, cancer cells can also travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.
According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States.proximately, in 2019, 101,420 new cases of colon cancer and 44,180 rectal cancer will be diagnosed.
The lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer is about 1 in 22 (4.49%) for men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) for women.
The 5-year survival rate of people with localized stage colorectal cancer is 90%. However, only 39% of patients are diagnosed at an early stage.
Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of colorectal cancer, some researchers suggested that the widespread of colorectal cancer in the South Korean may be correlated with the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades, particularly in men.
Dr. Kim, Jeehyun, wrote, "In men, total fat intake was not associated with risk of colorectal adenoma. However, the risk of colorectal adenoma increased with higher saturated fatty acid (SFA) intake. The adjusted odds ratio in the highest quintile was 1.71 (95% confidence interval, 1.01–2.91) compared with that in the lowest quintile".
Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.
In the urgency to find a potential compound for the treatment of colon cancer, researchers investigated the effects of tomato powder (TP) on the development of azoxymethane (AOM)-induced colorectal cancer in Wistar rats.
According to the tested assays, TP added to feed at 5% rate decreased the rate of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) associated with the early stage of colon cancer developing and reduces the development of adenocarcinoma and growth of AOM-induced colorectal cancer in rats.
TP supplementation also demonstrated chemopreventive activities against the protein involving in the stimulating production of proinflammatory cytokines in the colon tissues and promoted cancer cells apoptosis.
Based on the findings, Dr. Tuzcu M, the lead scientist wrote, "Our findings identify an intimate connection between dietary supplementation of TP and the decreased risk of colorectal cancer in rats".
And "suggest that consumption of TP would be a natural candidate for the prevention of colorectal cancer in men".
Furthermore, according to the joint study led by the University of Almería, tomato showed significant time- and concentration-dependent inhibitory/cytotoxic effects on HT-29 cells.
Moreover, adding tomato carotenoids and olive oil to HT-29 cells in cultures demonstrated a better inhibitory effect compared to the application of individual compounds in CCD-18 normal cells.
In variety comparison, Racimo tomato displayed the most anti-cancer activity against colorectal cancer cell proliferation compared to others, without affecting the normal CCD-18 cells.
In chemical analysis, olive oil and tomato carotenoids inhibited the HT-29 cancer cell proliferation synergistically compared to no effect of other phenolic compounds.
Taken altogether, tomato alone or combined with olive oil may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, the Herbal Remedy Which Kills Bladder Cancer Cells in Vitro, Scientists Say
Herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi may have a potential in the prevention and treatment of bladder cancer, some scientists suggested.
Bladder cancer is a medical and chronic condition characterized by cell growth uncontrollably and disorderly in the tissue of the bladder.
Most bladder cancer starts first on the surface of the inner lining tissue of the bladder. As the cancer progress to the advanced stage, the malignant cells can infect other healthy tissue through the circulation of blood and fluid.
Bladder cancer that spreads to other parts of the body is known as metastatic bladder cancer.
According to the statistic, every year, approximately, over 80,000 adults, including 62,380 men and 18,810 women in the United States are diagnosed with bladder cancer, causing the of deaths of 12,520 men and 4,720 women.
The 5-year relative survival rate of all stages of bladder cancer is about 77%. However, the 5-year relative survival rate for people diagnosed with stage 0 of bladder cancer is about 98%,
The statistic strongly suggested, if bladder cancer is diagnosed in the early stage, it is treatable.
The exact causes of bladder cancer are unknown. However, the age of 50 and over, men, smoking, long-term exposure to harmful chemicals are associated with the increased risk of the disease,
Some researchers suggested certain medical conditions such as diabetes, previous treatment of radiotherapy and chemotherapy and early menopause are also some of the prevalent risk factors that may increase the early onset of bladder cancer.
Arctostaphylos uva-ursi is one of the species of Bearberry, in the genus Arctostaphylos, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to northern North America, Asia, and Europe.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as a diuretic agent and to treat urinary problems, including bladder infections, kidney infection, kidney stones, pelvic pain, etc.
The Ingredients
It contains arbutin, ursolic acid, tannic acid, gallic acid, some essential oil and resin, hydroquinones tannins, phenolic glycosides, and flavonoids.
In the reaffirm of traditional medicine use of herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi for treatment of various types of cancer, researchers at the Chung-Ang University College of Medicine launched an investigation to examine the effects of Arbutin, glycosylated hydroquinone extracted from the bearberry plant (Arctostaphylos species) on TCCSUP human bladder carcinoma cell.
At the dose at concentrations of < 500 microg/ml, Arbutin did not exhibit any cytotoxic effects in TCCSUP cells.
In different concentrations that are higher than 500microg/ml, Arbutin significantly decreased TCCSUP cell proliferation in a time-dependent manner.
According to the cell cycle analysis, arbutin strongly disrupted the cell cycle also in a time-dependent manner.
Furthermore, arbutin led to the inactivation of the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), which is known to critically regulate cell proliferation.
The in-depth analysis also found that arbutin markedly increases the expression of the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p21(WAF1/CIP1)which is considered a key mediator of p53-dependent cell cycle arrest.
Where p53, also known as TP53, is a protein that processes a function in regulating the cell cycle division and hence functions as a tumor suppression.
Dr. Li H, the lead author, after taking into account of co and confounders, said, " arbutin inhibits TCCSUP cell proliferation via ERK inactivation and p21 up-regulation".
Abnormal activation of ERK was found in human cancer due to DNA mutation. The combination of ERK pathway inhibitors (cytostatic agents) and conventional anticancer drugs (cytotoxic agents) are an excellent basis for scientists to develop new chemotherapeutic strategies against cancer.
Taken altogether, herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi containing a high volume of Arbutin may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of bladder cancer,
However, further data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food or its bioactive compounds during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi anti-bladder cancer possibilities.

Artichoke, the Potential Anti Type 2 Diabetes Herbal Remedy with No Side Effects, According to Studies
Artichoke may be used as a functional remedy for the treatment of type 2 diabetes with no side effects, according to studies.
Type 2 diabetes is a medical disease characterized by not enough insulin in the bloodstream due to dismissed pancreas function or in properly use the insulin of the body.
In other words, type 2 diabetes is caused by the beta cell which is responsible for the production of insulin died off or the clogged up of the insulin receptor sites, which allow the cell to bind with insulin in the blood to transform glucose to energy.
The hallmark of type 2 diabetes is insulin resistance.
Types 2 diabetes is a common disease of adults in the Western world. According to the statistics provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), over 100 million U.S. adults are now living with diabetes or prediabetes.
And, in 2015, 30.3 million Americans or 9.4 percent of the U.S. population have diabetes.
The disease has caused a significant economic burden in the world. In the US, the annual economic cost for each individual with type 2 diabetes is $11,917.
In fact, the direct diabetes costs in a country’s gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, the USA stood out as having particularly high costs, compared to other countries.
Some researchers suggested that the widespread type 2 diabetes in the overweight population in the US may be correlated to the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades.
Dr. Lu Qi, and colleagues in the examination of the Western diet in types 2 diabetics wrote, "The Western dietary pattern was not associated with diabetes risk among those with a lower GRS."
And, "In addition, we found that intakes of processed meat, red meat, and heme iron, which characterized the Western dietary pattern, showed significant interactions with GRS in relation to diabetes risk (P for interaction = 0.029, 0.02, and 0.0004, respectively). The diet-diabetes associations were more evident among men with a high GRS (≥12) than in those with a low GRS".
The results indirectly suggested that people who follow the Western diet with a genetic risk score (GRS) are at an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.
Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.
The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.
Scientists on finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of diabetes examined the artichoke (JA) potential in attenuating lipid disturbances and insulin resistance (IR) in an animal model.
Wistar rats selected for the study were fed a control diet, a 60 % fructose-enriched diet (FRU), or an FRU with 10 % JA (n 6-7) for 4 weeks. An oral glucose tolerance test was carried out on day 21.
Injection of JA showed a significant effect on improving the expression of the genes associated with fibrosis and inflammation and insulin resistance according to the global gene expression analyses and oral glucose tolerance test, respectively.
Dr. Chang WC, the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounder suggested that 10 % JA supplementation may be beneficial for the prevention of the onset of diabetes.
Furthermore, in order to reveal more information about the artichoke anti-diabetes effect, researchers conducted a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study on 60 subjects with impaired fasting glucose (IFG), impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), or newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes.
The selected subjects were randomly assigned to either a group that ingested 40 g of a Jerusalem artichoke and fermented soybean powder mixture (19.45 g each) daily or a group that received a placebo for 12 weeks.
Group treated with supplementation with the Jerusalem artichoke and fermented soybean powder mixture reduced the levels of fasting glucose (p < 0.001) and FFAs (p = 0.034), glucose at 60 min.
According to the homeostasis model assessment, the supplement also inhibits the insulin resistance (p = 0.018), and the urinary 8-epi-prostaglandin F2α (8-epi-PGF2α) level, a marker of free radical-catalyzed lipid peroxidation.
Moreover, the change of glucose at 120 min (r = 0.472, p = 0.027) and the glucose under the curve (AUC) were positively correlated with the reduction of plasma malondialdehyde, an indication of oxidative stress.
The finding clearly suggested the efficacy of the consumption of a Jerusalem artichoke and fermented soybean powder mixture against the overexpression of glucose for 12 weeks, particularly, in the newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes.
Taken altogether, artichoke used alone or combined with other herbal products may be considered functional remedies for the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Arnica, the Potential Colon Cancer Functional Herb
Herb Arnica may be the next target of the pharmaceutical companies to identify a single ingredient medicine for the treatment of colon cancer, some scientists suggested.
Colon cancer is a slow and predictable condition characterized by irregular cell growth on the colon tissue.
The cause of colon cancer is a result of the alternation of DNA of the cells in the colon.
Most cases of colon cancer start at the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the colon tissue. At this stage, the tumor is very small and does not cause any symptoms.
However, at the later stage, colon cancer may cause symptoms of a change of bowel habits, severe rectal bleeding or blood in your stool and persistently abdominal pain.
If you experience some of the above symptoms that last more than 4 weeks, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of colon cancer.
According to the statistic, the 5-year survival rate of people with localized stage colorectal cancer is 90% and only 39% of patients are diagnosed at this early stage.
Researchers do not know why people with the same health condition, family history and diet pattern, some are susceptible to colon cells DNA alternation while others do not.
Out of a number of risk factors, the genetic preposition has been under intensifying studies by many scientists.
Dr.Glaser EM in finding the genetic mutation associated with the risk colon cancer said, "Colorectal cancer is one of the most common malignancies in the United States. Although both genetic and environmental factors play a role in colorectal tumorigenesis" and "single genes that confer susceptibility to familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) and hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC). Because these genes are inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion, offspring of carriers have a 50% chance of inheriting the gene mutation and its associated risk".
The genetic mutation hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC).genes has a prevalence rate of 1 in 500, and causes about 2% to 3% of all colorectal cancers.
More importantly, genetic testing for the FAP and HNPCC genes is now available for everyone.
Arnica is a herbaceous species, genus perennial, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia.
The plant has been used in herbal medicine for centuries to treat strains, sprains, and bruises.
Colon Cancer is defined as a condition of the abnormal proliferation of cells in the colon.
Besides containing contain helenalin as it main ingredient used as an anti-inflammatory agent in herbal medicine, herbal Arnica also contains 11,13- dihydrohelenaline, chamissonolid, Sesquiterpene lactone, lignans of the furofuran, dibenzylbutyrolactone, dibenzylbutyrolactol types, pinoresinol, epipinoresinol, phillygenin, matairesinol, nortrachelogenin, and nortracheloside, six dibenzylbutyrolactol derivatives.
In the concerns of the aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and colon-rectal mucosal epithelial cell proliferation in patients with colon cancer, researchers at the University of São Paulo examine the anti-colon cancer of chemical compound isolated from the Lychnophora ericoides Mart. (Brazilian herbal arnica).
50 included in the study were randomly assigned to the followings Fifty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 5 groups.
* The groups G1 to G4 were given 4 injections of the carcinogen 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH).
* The G2 group received Lychnophora ericoides (LE) extracts for 6 wks.
* The groups G3 and G4 received LE for 4 wk and 2 wk, respectively, at the postinitiation and initiation phases of colonic carcinogenesis.
* The group G5 was the control.
42 days after the first injections of DMH for the neoplastic induction, researchers found that
* Groups G1 demonstrated an increase in the number of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and cancer cell proliferation induced by DMH.
* Group G4 after treatment of LE inhibited a clinically significant decrease in the number of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and attenuated the increase of cancer cell proliferation induced by DMH.
These results suggested that Lychnophora ericoides extracts were effective against the development of colon cancer by suppressing the initiation and progression of colonic carcinogenesis.
Continuously, to differentiate the effect of herbal Arnica effects in the inhibition of cancers, researchers examine the cytotoxicity of 21 flavonoids and 5 sesquiterpene lactones, isolated from herbal Arnica in a human small cell lung carcinoma cell line, and in COLO 320, a human colorectal cancer cell line.
Compared to cisplatin, a novel chemo drug, most flavonoids showed moderate to low cytotoxicity against COLO 320 cancer cell line.
However, flavone jaceosidin of the sesquiterpene lactones was found to be the most effective compound.in displaying the cytotoxicity.
The application of the maximum half-life concentration of 1.0 microM exerted the most cytotoxic effect against COLO 320.
Compared to GLC4, COLO 320 was more sensitive than for many flavonoids (especially for flavones).
The finding strongly indicated that herbal Arnica bioactive compounds process potential activity in inhibiting the onset and progression of colon cancer.
Therefore, herbal Arnica containing abundant bioactive compounds may have potential in reducing the risk and treatment of colon cancer, depending on the confirmation of the large sample size and multicenter in the human study.

Green Tea, The Functional Beverage Which Protects the Stomach Against Gastric Ulcer
Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reducing the risk and treatment of gastric ulcers, some scientists suggested.
Gastric ulcers are sores that develop in the lining of the stomach as a result of a bacterial infection or by overproduction of stomach acid. In other words, gastric ulcer is a condition characterized by open sores developed in the stomach, affecting the function of the stomach.
There are a set of factors that cause a gastric ulcer, including the infection of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), frequent use of anti-inflammatory medicine, aging, smoking and excessive alcohol drinking
Some researchers suggested that people who have radiation therapy for stomach cancer are also a higher risk of gastric ulcer development.
According to the study "Are genetic influences on peptic ulcer dependent or independent of genetic influences for Helicobacter pylori infection?" by the Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Baylor College of Medicine. "Genetic influences are of moderate importance for liability to peptic ulcer disease. Genetic influences for peptic ulcer are independent of genetic influences important for acquiring H. pylori infection".
If you are experiencing the symptoms of dull pain in the stomach. weight loss. refuse to eat because of pain. persistent gastrointestinal discomforts, acid reflux, and heartburn, you may have a gastric ulcer. Please make sure that you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.
Green tea, a precious drink processes a numbers of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.
In the testing of healing of the hydroalcoholic extract including ethyl acetate fraction, (GEAc) and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) from green tea (GEt) in the risk of gastric ulcer induced by application of 80 % acetic acid on serosal mucosa of rats, researchers showed that application of the extract after 7 days inhibited ulcer area by exhibiting the antioxidant activity in reducing the free radical overexpression.
Furthermore, application of the hydroalcoholic extract also inhibited the oxidative stress that cause gastric damage by injection of acetic acid by enhancing the production of antioxidant enzyme GSH, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and Glutathione-S-transferase (GST) enzymes and ameliorating the production of lipid hydroperoxides (LOOH), a free radical in precipitated ulcer development by withdrawing electrons from the lipids in cell membranes.
Additional analysis also suggested that rats fed with green tea (GEt) improved the capacity of mucin content in gastric juice which has been found at reduced levels in rats with an ulcer after infecting of acetic acid.
Interestingly, injection of green tea (GEt) also decreased inflammatory infiltration of Myeloperoxidase (MPO) and N-acetylglucosaminidase (NAG) which has been used as biomarkers in the measurement of severity in some diseases including gastric ulcer.
Importantly, the application did not alter gastric acid secretion and induced acute toxicity.
Dr. Borato DG, the lead authors, after taking into account con-founders said, "GEt had a pronounced antiulcer effect, possibly through maintenance of mucin content and reduction of inflammation and oxidative stress".
Other polyphenol compound L-Theanine, isolated from green tea on NSAID (indomethacin)-induced maximum ulceration in the stomach on the third day at dose of 18 mg/kg inhibited the expression of the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the induction of lipid peroxidation, oxidation and protein carbonylation which is considered one of the most harmful irreversible oxidative protein that cause damage to the stomach.
The application also reduced the expression of type 1 T helper (Th1) cells in the production of inflammatory cytokines, interferon-gamma, interleukin (IL)-2, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-beta, in the facilitated immune response in exhibiting inflammation in the acute stomach damage infection.
Additionally, L-Theanine also increased the levels of total thiol in the stomach tissue, mucin content in the gastric juice. The enhanced antioxidant levels not only improve digestion but also protect the stomach against damage by foreign substances.
Moreover, at a higher dose of 40 mg/kg b.w. At 10 mg/kg b.w., Dr. Chatterjee S, the lead author said, "L-theanine significantly alleviated the adverse oxidative effect of indomethacin through enhanced synthesis of PGE2 by modulation of cyclooxygenase-1 and 2 [COX-1 and COX-2] expression, Th1/Th2 cytokine balance, and restoration of cellular antioxidant status at the gastric ulcer margin".
Taken together, been tea with abundant bioactive polyphenols may be considered functional food for the treatment of gastric ulcers without causing any adverse effects.
However, high doses and long-term applications of green tea supplements were associated with acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Betaxanthins, the Best Antioxidants
Antioxidants that inhibit oxidation are stable molecules produced by the host or from the dietary sources.
Free radicals are highly reactive and unstable atoms with a single electron on the outermost ring. To become stable, free radicals intercept or donate an electron from stable atoms, leading to a chain reaction that can not be stopped until all electrons on the outermost ring are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.
Oxidative stress is a result of overexpression of free radicals compared to low levels of antioxidants in the body. Over time, oxidative stress induces protein, lipid, and cellular damage, leading to cells injury and death that facilitate the onset of chronic diseases, including CVD and cancer.
However, free radicals at a moderate level are necessary for the body function, including maintaining the blood vessels in the regulation of relaxation and constriction.
Some diseases associated with free radicals are
* Cancers
Free radical-induced oxidative stress causes alteration of DNA, leading to the possible development of cancer.
* Atherosclerosis
Atherosclerosis developing is associated with the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein molecules (LDL) or bad cholesterol, that leads to damage to the arterial wall.
* Ischemia
Researchers found that free radicals generated during oxidated stress through a series of interacting pathways in cardiac myocytes and endothelial cells can lead to the increased post-ischemic heart and post-ischemic injury.
* Diabetes mellitus
Diabetes mellitus reduced the ability of the body to regulate peroxide and transition metal metabolism that result in the establishment of the disease-induced longer-term complications such as atherosclerosis, kidney, and nerve damage as well as blindness.
* Lung disease
The implication of oxygen and air pollutants induced free radical activity have become obvious as our lung is the only organs to take in oxygen from the atmosphere.
Betaxanthins are Phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments, belongings to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, Sicilian prickly pear, etc.
On finding a natural compound for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the betaxanthin's antioxidant capacity in Stenocereus pruinosus over a range of pH.
Based on the chemical analysis, the stability of betaxanthins was found to represent 89% of total betalains in yellow pitayas.
More precisely, the Maximum stability betaxanthins were observed at pH6.6, and the addition of ascorbic acid increased the half-life 1.8 times.
Additionally, betaxanthins were found to be more stable in gummies than in beverages observed by the increase of pigment retention increased in products that were stored in the dark or at low temperatures.
These results strongly suggested that betaxanthins exerted significant antioxidant activity.
Taken altogether, betaxanthins may be considered a natural antixodants against the onset of oxidative stress, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Alfalfa, A Potent and Natural Dietary Antioxidants
Herbal alfalfa may have a profound and positive effect on enhancing the expression of antioxidants in the body, some scientists suggested.
Antioxidants are stable molecules that inhibit oxidation induced by free radicals.
A free radical is a highly reactive atom with a single electron in the outer ring.
Free radicals produced in our body is a natural process derived either from essential metabolism through the processes of food intake or from external sources through directly contacting the skin or the air we breathe including exposure to X-rays, ozone, cigarette smoking, air pollutants, and industrial chemicals.
Some foods are antioxidants producers such as fruits and vegetables and whole-grain, while others such as processed meats, alcohol are radicals producers. Particularly, fats and oils can easily be oxidized if they are cooked in high heat.
In order to counter the overexpression of free radicals which add to the body's burden, our body produces enzymes antioxidants and metal carrier proteins to neutralize them before they can cause damage.
Depending on the degrees of free radical invasion, antioxidant enzymes can be categorized into first, second, third and even fourth line of defense.
Dr. O.M, in the examine the antioxidant defense wrote, "The role and effectiveness of the first-line defense antioxidants which basically include superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) is important and indispensable in the entire defense strategy of antioxidants, especially in reference to superoxide anion radical (*O2) which is perpetually generated in normal body metabolism, particularly through the mitochondrial energy production pathway (MEPP)".
The statement clearly suggested that in healthy individual antioxidant enzymes synthesized form our body is good enough to protect the body from bombardments of free radicals.
However, for people with a weakened immune system, chronic illness, dietary sources of antioxidants may be needed.
Oxidative stress is a result of the imbalance of free radicals and antioxidants in the body. The syndrome is either caused by overexpression of free radicals or depressed levels of antioxidants or both.
Oxidative stress has been found to induce widespread damage due to a set of a chain reaction auto-catalytically by free radicals that attacks the lipid bilayers of the cell walls, induces lipid, protein damage and alternation of cell DNA, leading to the onset of chronic diseases, including cancers.
Alfalfa is a flowering plant in the genus Medicago, belongings to the family Fabaceae.
The herb has been cultivated all over the world as hay for cattle feeding. The leaves, sprouts, and seeds to make medicine has been used in traditional medicine over thousands of year for the treatment of high cholesterol, asthma, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, enhance digestive system, bleeding disorder, kidney, and urinary tract infection, etc.
North America aboriginal has used Alfalfa seed as food, such as making bread and mush.
In reaffirming the herbal alfalfa antioxidant activity especially scavenging activity for hydroxyl radical and DPPH radical, researchers launched a study to determine whether a lyophilized aqueous extract of alfalfa or Medicago sativa L. could exert antioxidant activity against carbon tetrachloride-induced oxidative stress and liver injury in rats.
Before injecting the lyophilized aqueous extract of alfalfa, rats treated by CCl (4) showed a significant increase of serum of oxidative stress markers observed by the levels of transaminase, ALP, bilirubin, lipid profile. and liver MDA accompanied by the decline of antioxidant status in liver non-protein sulfhydryl (NP-SH); and total protein (TP) contents.
Pretreatment with alfalfa and silymarin for three weeks prior to the administration of CCl (4) significantly prevented the increase of oxidative markers by reducing the oxidative stress indicated by elevated NP-SH and TP concentration of the antioxidant liver enzyme.
Futhermore, the incidence of liver lesion induced by the injection of CCL(4) also reduced by the pretreatment of alfalfa extract.
The application of alfalfa extracts also exerted a potent scavenging activity against hydroxyl radical and DPPH radical.
These results indicated that alfalfa may be considered a novel natural antioxidant. Dr.Al-Dosari MS wrote in the final report, " alfalfa extract possesses hepatoprotective and antioxidative stress properties possibly through its antioxidant phytochemical constituents and substantiates its use in various liver disorders as a hepatoprotector".
Additionally, researchers at the University of Life Sciences in Lublin, in the testing antioxidant effect of a dietary protein-xanthophylls (PX) concentrate of alfalfa on raw meat launched an evaluation by adding the concentration in turkey diet.
The study included 120 turkeys assigned randomly assigned to 3 groups (group I-control group; group II--with 1.5% supplementation of the protein-xanthophylls (PX) concentrate; group III--with 3% supplementation of the protein-xanthophylls (PX) concentrate).
The addition of protein-xanthophylls (PX) concentration of alfalfa to a turkey diet protects the deterioration of breast and thigh meat quality.
Also, by examining the changes in color, oxymyoglobin content, TBARS, and oxidation-reduction potential values, researchers said " the inclusion of the concentration to turkey diets acts as an antioxidant in the raw meat.
Taken altogether, alfalfa may be considered a natural antioxidant which improves the antioxidant profile in the body against the overexpression of free radicals in the initiation of oxidative stress.
