Herbal Andrographis may process certain bioactive compounds for the prevention and treatment of heart diseases, some scientists suggested.
Heart disease is the medical condition associated with the blood vessels, including coronary artery disease, heart rhythm, and a heart defect caused by the accumulation of plaques.
Plaque made up of cholesterol, fatty molecules, and minerals accumulated in the arteries can cause stiffening and hardening of the arterial wall and narrowing the arteries, affecting the transportation of oxygen risk blood to the heart.
These results suggested that people who follow the Western diet high in saturated and trans fat, red med meat and processed foods and over the use of calcium supplements are associated with the increased risk plaque building up.
Long-term building up plaques can cause substantial damage to the arterial wall, facilitating the onset of heart disease.
According to statistics, heart disease kills more than 2,000 Americans every day and approximately 60 million Americans have heart disease.
The exact causes of heart disease are debatable. Researchers do not why people who over a few decades of following the Western diet, only some are susceptible to heart disease while many do not, even have the same health conditions.
The differentiation suggested that some people may process certain genetic preposition which
can increase the development of heart disease.
Dr. Seka Kathiresan, the lead scientist in the study"Genetics of Human Cardiovascular Disease" Cardiovascular disease encompasses a range of conditions extending from myocardial infarction to congenital heart disease most of which are heritable", and
"ANGPTL3mutations as a cause of familial combined hypolipidemia, BAG mutations for dilated cardiomyopathy, NT5E mutations for arterial calcification, KCNJ5 mutations for hereditary hypertension due to aldosterone-producing adenomas, and KLHL3 or CUL3mutations for hypertension and hyperkalemia".
Other risk factors, according to epidemiological studies include obesity insulin resistance or diabetes, high cholesterol and blood pressure, physically inactive, smoking and eating an unhealthy diet are also associated with disease onset.
However, most people who carry some of the risk factors have never developed heart disease.
Andrographis paniculata is also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka.
The plant has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia, swollen lymph nodes, leprosy, bronchitis, sore throats, tuberculosis, chicken pox, etc.
Besides the main ingredient andrographolides, giving the plant a bitter taste, herbal Andrographis also has diterpene lactones, neoandrographolide, andrographolide, 14-doexy-11, 12-didehydro andrographolide, etc., flavonoids viz., oroxylin, wogonin, andrographidines A, B, C, D, E, F.
In the concern of ischemia-reperfusion (I-R) injury in the increase of the complication of myocardial infarction (MI), researchers at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences conducted a study with an aim to find a natural ingredient or whole herb which processes a cardioprotective effect.
In the rat model, the hydroalcoholic extract of Andrographis paniculata was evaluated against the left anterior descending coronary artery (LADCA) ligation-induced I-R injury of the myocardium.
Selected MI rats were induced by LADCA ligation for 45 min followed by reperfusion for 60 min and divided into five experimental groups viz., sham (saline-treated, but LADCA was not ligated), I-R control (saline-treated + I-R), benazepril (30 mg/kg + I-R), A. paniculata (200 mg/kg per se) and A. paniculata (200 mg/kg + I-R).
* In I-R control group, LADCA ligation showed a significant cardiac dysfunction evidenced by reduced hemodynamic parameters; mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart rate (HR).
* The I-R control without treatment of the herbal extract expressed a decline of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione (GSH) but enhanced lipid peroxidation product, malondialdehyde (MDA), a marker of oxidative stress.
After 30 days of 200 mg/kg A. paniculata administered orally, the treated group showed favorable improvement of hemodynamic and left the ventricular contractile function, restoration of the myocardial antioxidants and prevention of depletion of myocytes injury marker enzymes along with inhibition of lipid peroxidation.
The results indicated that 200 mg/kg A. paniculata demonstrated a significant cardioprotective activity by inhibiting the adverse effect caused by LADCA in the rat model.
Dr. Ojha SK, the lead author said. "The cardioprotective effects of A. paniculata were found comparable to that of benazepril treatment".
Additionally, in reaffirming the cardioprotective effect of herbal Andrographis, researchers launched an investigation to examine the watery extract of Andrographis paniculata Nees (APN) activity after one hour of the development of myocardial infarction by the formation of thrombus.
13 dogs were included in the study with 6 of the was served as a control group.
Andrographis treatment group showed clinically significant efficacy in the improvement of the myocardial structure surrounding the initially appearing ischemic area.
Andrographis exerted a cardioprotective effect in a reversal of the damaged area by restoring the damaged area.
The degree of myocardial degeneration and necrosis in the central part of the ischemic area was mild. in the treatment, dogs compared to the control.
These observations strongly suggested that APN processes cardioprotection by limiting the expansion of ischemic focus, accelerating the reversibly ischemic myocardium.
Taken altogether, herbal Andrographis may be considered a functional food for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of heart disease.

Herbal Alfalfa, the Immunomodulatory Natural Whole Food Medicine
Alfalfa is a flowering plant in the genus Medicago, belonging to the family Fabaceae, The plants have been cultivated all over the world as hay for cattle feeding, and used in traditional medicine over thousands of year to treat high cholesterol, asthma, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, enhance digestive system, bleeding disorder, kidney, and urinary tract infection, etc. North Americal aboriginal has used Alfalfa seed as food, such as making bread and mush.
The immunomodulatory effect is a function of the immune system involved many reactions, including antimicrobial organisms against infection and inflammation, modulated genes expression.......This modulation may also be induced by the neurohormonal system.
Alfalfa may be a potential herbal medicine used for enhanced immune systems for fighting against the forming of free radicals and invasion of foreign substances through its immunomodulatory effects.
Polysavone, a natural extract from alfalfa, induced the proliferation of T and B white blood cells, lymphocytes and improved antibody against viral invasion significantly in comparison to the control group, according to the animal study.
Dr. Xiaofang Dong at the Qiqihar University said, " Polysavone may decrease abdominal fat deposition and enhance immunity without an adverse effect on the performance of broiler chickens"
In a total of A total of 360 1-d-old male commercial Arbor Acre broiler chickens, dietary polysavone (Alfalfa extract) in comparison to chlortetracycline supplementation, polysavone group showed a excellent scavenging activity in inhibited free radical expression, particular for 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl and superoxide anion radicals, through it The immunomodulatory effects in improved immune function in compared chlortetracycline supplementation group.
Furthermore, alfalfa flavonoids extract (AFE) also promoted immune function in regulating the population of microbe, enhancing antioxidant properties by increasing antioxidase activity and affecting immunity by changing the proportion of white blood cells and Innate immunity.
Taking all together, alfalfa may be effective in the promoted immune system fighting against the forming of free radical and microbial infection, but human trials are necessary to confirm this validation.

Anise, The Herb Which Exerts Antinociceptive Activity Against Primary Dysmenorrhea, Scientist Find
Herbal Anise may process an antinociceptive activity in reducing the expression of primary dysmenorrhea, some scientists suggested.
Primary dysmenorrhea pain is a menstrual pain caused by sensory neurons stimulus triggered by overproduction prostaglandins, hormones that lead to uterus contract before or during menstruation.
Antinociceptive activity is an action or process of blocking the painful or injurious stimulus by sensory neurons.
Some women may experience periodic pains during or prior to, or after menstrual periods in the lower abdomen.
In traditional Chinese medicine, dysmenorrhea is defined as a pain in the lower abdomen that can spread over to the whole abdomen and lumbosacral region, depending on the diagnosis.
According to statistics, primary dysmenorrhea affects more than 50% of women in late adolescence and the early 20s. Most primary dysmenorrhea appears 6 to 12 months after the first period due to immature of the reproductive organs of young girls,
Anise is a flowering plant of the species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belonging to the family Apiaceae native to Egypt and the Mediterranean region.
The popular herb has been used in traditional herbal medicine as a fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners and stomachic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative, digestive, expectorant, stimulant and tonic agent and to treat head-lice and mites, increase blood pressure, prevent formation of gas in the gastrointestinal tract,.... and menstrual cramps.
The Chemical Ingredients
Besides the main ingredient Anethole, herbal anise also contains, D-pinene, I-phellandrene, Alpha-terpineol, Safrol, Methyl chavicol, Resin, Shikimic acid, etc.
In the finding of natural ingredients treat primary dysmenorrhea without inducing side effects, Dr. Khodakrami Nahid, MSM and colleague conducted a study to examine the effect of an Iranian herbal drug in the treatment of primary dysmenorrhea.
The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot trial among 180 female students at Isfahan University dormitory aged 18 to 27.
Participants were randomly divided into three groups: herbal drugs were given 500 mg of highly purified saffron, celery seed, and anise (SCA) extracts three times a day for three days, starting from the onset of bleeding or pain, mefenamic acid, and placebo.
After following the participants for two to three cycles from the beginning of menstruation through the three days of bleeding and the severity and duration of pain at 2 and 3 months were measured.
At the final report of the study, researchers filed,
* Women received Anise extract and mefenamic acid showed a statistically significant reduction in pain scores and pain duration scores.
* The decrease in pain score was reflected by a significant reduction in other herbal drug use among the treatment groups compared to the placebo group but lesser compared to the Anise group.
* Application of Anise extract demonstrated a magnitude of the reduction which is significantly greater compared to mefenamic acid and placebo groups.
* However, both herbal drugs and mefenamic acid effectively relieved menstrual pain as compared with the placebo.
These results suggested that herbal Anise processed strong antinociceptive activity against pain caused by primary dysmenorrhea may be considered as a functional herb for the treatment of primary dysmenorrhea.

Herbal Artichoke May Cure Non Alcoholic Liver Disease (NAFLD), Human Studies Suggest
On seeking natural therapy with no side effects, scientists may have found a herbal remedy for the prevention and treatment of nonalcoholic liver disease (NAFLD), according to studies.
Nonalcoholic liver disease is a chronic condition caused by fat accumulated over time in the liver, affecting people who drink little to no alcohol.
In other words, if you have fat that makes up over 5% of the liver, you are considered to have fatty liver disease.
Nonalcoholic liver disease can be classified into the noninflammatory fatty liver and inflammatory liver steatohepatitis.
Most patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease are asymptomatic. However, in the later stage, patients may experience symptoms of enlarged liver, persistent fatigue and pain in the upper right abdomen, depending on the formation of scars.
According to the statistics provided by the Canadian Liver Foundation, more than 50% of Canadians are overweight and 75% of obese individuals are at risk of developing a simple fatty liver, including 23% of them will develop fatty liver with inflammation sometimes during their lifetime.
According to the epidemiological studies, patients with nonalcoholic liver disease have elevated levels of liver enzymes gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) and Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT) which are the markers used to predict the severity of liver disease including fatty liver.
A blood test is required if your doctor suspects you might develop fatty liver disease, including NAFLD.
Other tests for diagnosis of liver fatty disease may include ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (H-MRS), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
The exact causes of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease are not identified. However, some researchers suggested unhealthy diet-induced obesity may be a major cause of the widespread NAFLD in the Western world.
Dr. Al-Dayyat HM, the lead scientist in the examination of the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and associated dietary and lifestyle risk factors, said, "Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has emerged as the most common chronic liver disease worldwide with a reported prevalence ranging 20-30% depending on the studied populations".
And, "The high prevalence of NAFLD is probably due to the contemporary epidemics of obesity, unhealthy dietary pattern, and sedentary lifestyle. NAFLD patients are at increased risk of cardiovascular and liver-related mortality".
The findings strongly suggested if you are obese, you are at a substantially higher risk of fatty liver disease, compared to healthy weight individuals.
Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.
The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.
In the course od finding a herbal remedy for the treatment of nonalcoholic liver disease (NAFLD), researchers evaluated the potential to attenuate lipid disturbances of Jerusalem artichoke (JA).
Selected Wistar rats included in the study were fed a control diet, a 60 % fructose-enriched diet (FRU), or an FRU with 10 % JA (n 6-7) for 4 weeks.
According to liver samples collected for biochemical and global gene expression analysis, pretreatment of dietary JA supplementation showed strong activity against hepatic TAG accumulation induced by the FRU.
Futhermore, JA also demonstrated significant inhibition of inflammation-inducing the expression of proteins associated with liver fatty acid synthesis, and the development of liver fibrosis.
The results suggested that JA processes beneficial effects in the prevention of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease at molecular levels.
In order to collect more information about artichoke anti-non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, scientists investigated the artichoke leaf extract (ALE) potential hepatoprotective activity in patients with NAFLD.
100 subjects with ultrasound-diagnosed NAFLD randomized to either ALE 600 mg daily or placebo for a 2-month period were included in the randomized double-blind placebo-controlled parallel-group trial.
According to the results from 90 patients who completed the study (49 ALE and 41 placeboes), the intake of ALE did not exert any side effects.
ALE at the end of the experiment displays a liver protective effect by increasing the hepatic vein flow reducing portal vein diameter (p < .001) and liver size (p < .001).
Injection of ALE also inhibited the liver damage and oxidative stress markers.
Moreover, the artichoke leaf extract also is found to reduce the levels of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglyceride concentrations, according to the assays.
Taken altogether, artichoke may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of non-alcoholic liver disease, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Alfalfa, the Antidopaminergic Herbal Remedy for Menopausal Symptoms
Herbal Alfalfa may be considered a functional herb for the treatment of menopause, some scientists suggested.
Menopause cessation of the menstrual period and is a natural process of all women. Some researchers suggested that you officially enter the stage of menopause if you have gone 12 months without a menstrual period.
Women enter the menopause stage differently, but the average age is 51 in the United States.
Women with ovarian failure or removed may experience symptoms of menopause at early age 38.
Women experienced symptoms of menopause is the result of the gradually reduced production of estrogen and progesterone, the 2 most abundant hormone in the childbearing age women.
Most women in the Western world experience symptoms of hot flashes and emotional symptoms of menopause may disrupt your sleep, lower your energy or affect emotional health.
In the classification of the different menopause symptoms experienced by the women in the West and East. Dr. Baber RJ launched a study to examine the menopause in Asia and The West suggested "There is a school of thought that believes that menopausal symptoms are a peculiarly 'Western' phenomenon, not experienced by women from other regions and particularly not from Asia where it has been claimed, dietary, social and cultural factors afforded protection for women living in that region".
and "Ethnic differences within Asia account for small differences in endogenous hormone levels and age at menopause between Asian and Western women, and the type of menopause symptoms and their prevalence also differ between those two communities".
These results strongly indicated diet plays a critical role in the development of menopause symptoms severity. Asain women who immigrated to the West and adapted to the Western style diet experience menopause symptoms similar to those in the West.
Alfalfa is a flowering plant in the genus Medicago, belonging to the family Fabaceae, It has been cultivated all over the world as hay for cattle feeding.
The leaves, sprouts, and seeds to make medicine has been used in traditional medicine over thousands of year to treat high cholesterol, asthma, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, enhance digestive system, bleeding disorder, kidney, and urinary tract infection, etc. North America aboriginal has used Alfalfa seed as food, such as making bread and mush.
The herbal chemical constituents include flavones, isoflavones, sterols, bichanin A, coumestrol daidzein, formonetin, genistein and coumarin derivatives, etc.
In the finding, the natural whole food for the alleviation of menopause symptoms without inducing adverse effects caused by the hormone therapy researchers at the UniversitĂ degli Studi-Siena conducted an experiment to test the efficacy of a plant product based on extracts of the leaves of Salvia officinalis (sage) and Medicago sativa (alfalfa) in the treatment of hot flushes.
The study includes 30 menopausal women with symptoms of hot flushes.
Application of the combined leaves of Salvia officinalis (sage) and Medicago sativa (alfalfa) extract inhibited hot flushes and night sweating completely in 20 women with four women showed good improvement and the other six showed a reduction in symptoms.
Compared to the levels of TSH and Prl responses before and after 3 months of therapy, the plant's product induced a significant increase in prolactin (Prl and) TSH response to thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH).
TRH.produced in great amounts during menopause due to reduced TSH and prolactin responses to TRH during menopause.
Dr. De Leo V, the lead author after taking in final assessment said, "The product seems to have a central slight antidopaminergic action without side effects and is an effective agent in the treatment of menopausal symptoms".
Antidopaminergic drugs have been used in conventional medicine for the treatment of menopause symptoms, including Veralipride.
Dr. Kurzer MS and colleagues in the differentiation of plant-based estrogen, including those have been defined in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains commonly consumed by humans. Soybeans, clover and alfalfa sprouts, and oilseeds (such as flaxseed) suggest that dietary sources of isoflavones, coumestans, and lignans have been found to exert a significant effect in alleviating and preventing menopausal symptoms in humans, animals, and cell culture systems.
At the final report, the doctors said, "Although there currently are no dietary recommendations for individual phytoestrogens, there may be a great benefit in increased consumption of plant foods".
These results suggested that including alfalfa sprouts into a menopause women diet may have a strong implication in reducing the frequency and period of menopause symptoms.
Taken altogether, there is no doubt that Alfalfa processed high amount plant-based estrogen may be considered a functional food in the prevention and treatment of menopause symptoms.

Phytochemical Indicaxanthin Blocks the Onset of Oxidative Stress
Oxidative stress is a condition associated with the long-term imbalanced ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body, leading to protein, lipid, and cell damage that causes chronic illness such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
In other words, the condition is caused either by overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host or both.
Antioxidants are either produced by the body or injected into the body from outside sources such as the consumptions of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables.
Free radicals are everywhere, including the air we breathe, the food we eat and the body daily functioning such as cell metabolism.
More precisely, any chemical compound which has an oxygen molecule can become free radical after entering our body.
In healthy individuals, the antioxidant produced by the host is more than enough to counter the bombards of free radicals. However, people with a weakened immune system such as elderly and immature immune system such as the baby may need the injection of antioxidants from outside sources.
Particularly, people with a suppressive immune system due to chemotherapy may require to intake large amounts from antioxidant-rich food regularly.
Dr. Biller-Takahashi JD and colleagues wrote, "Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are reactive molecules containing oxygen, that form as byproducts of aerobic metabolism, including immune system processes. Too much ROS may cause oxidative stress".
And, " This study shows a relationship between oxidative stress and immunity, and, from a practical perspective, shows that improving immunity and health in pacu through the administration of selenium could improve their growth performance".
However, free radicals in moderate amount are needed for body functioning, including lower blood pressure, relax blood vessels to move blood, such as nitric oxide NO.
3,3'-Diindolylmethane or DIM are phytochemicals derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol, belonging to the group of Indoles, found abundantly in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and kale, etc.
Indicaxanthin is phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belongings to the group of Betalains found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.
On finding a potential ingredient for the prevention of disease associated with oxidative stress, researchers investigated the effect of indicaxanthin (Ind) on 7-KC-induced apoptosis of human monocyte/macrophage THP-1 cells.
Where 7-Ketocholesterol (7-KC) has been found to induce apoptosis of macrophages, a key event in the development of human atheromas.
Based on the tested analysis, 7-KC within 24 hours of injection within showed the pro-apoptotic activity observed by the early formation of intracellular reactive oxygen species over basal levels, NADPH oxidase-4 (NOX-4) over-expression and elevation of cytosolic Ca²⁺, with progressive depletion of total thiols.
In other words, 7-KC induced oxidative stress in the human monocyte/macrophage THP-1 cells, leading to cytotoxicity.
Interestingly, 7-KCalso inhibited the process of the redox-sensitive NF-ÎşB against oxidation in the tested cells.
Co-incubation of 2·5 ÎĽm of indicaxanthin completely prevented 7-KC-induced pro-apoptotic events.
The efficacy of indicaxanthin was attributed to the inhibition of NOX-4 basal activity and over-expression, inhibition of NF-ÎşB activation.
More precisely indicaxanthin promoted the THP-1 cells redox balance and Ca homeostasis, thus preventing mitochondrial damage-induced apoptosis.
Based on the findings, researchers said, " Ind, a highly bioavailable dietary phytochemical, may exert protective effects against atherogenic toxicity of 7-KC at a concentration of nutritional interest".
Taken altogether, indicaxanthin may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Health Food Onion Processes Anti-Atherogenic Property
Atherosclerosis is a condition characterized by the accumulated plaque on the arterial wall. Over time the condition can cause stiffening and hardening of the arteries, leading to cardiovascular disease.
Anti-atherogenic activity is the process to prevent or inhibit atherogenesis associated with the reduced formation of fatty plaques in the arteries.
In other words, anything, including the use of substances such as herbal remedy that prevents the blockage or narrowing of the arteries is considered atheroprotective effects.
Plaque in the arteries is formed by substances including fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood in the bloodstream. However, most cases of atherosclerosis are also involved in the amount of cholesterol which normally returned to the liver in healthy individuals remaining in the blood due to low levels of good cholesterol (HDL) or overexpression of bad cholesterol (LDL).
In other words, an unhealthy ratio of low and high-density lipoprotein is also one of the major risk factors of atherosclerosis.
The healthy ratio of blood cholesterol is any number that is less than 4 (LDL)/ 1 (HDL).
Some researchers suggested by increasing the levels of good cholesterol in the blood, the risk of atherosclerosis can be reduced.
Dr. Feig JE and colleagues wrote, "Pharmacologic agents, such as fibrates and niacin that increase HDL cholesterol levels have been associated with decreased cardiovascular events and beneficial effects on the coronary and carotid arteries".
And, "...potential mechanisms by which HDL may exert these anti-atherogenic effects, namely through its role in reverse cholesterol transport, its effects on endothelial cells, and its anti-inflammatory/antioxidant activities".
The results strongly suggested a healthy diet including nuts, coffee, cocoa, grapes, and berries with high levels of HLD may have a profound effect on the prevention of atherosclerosis.
The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.
Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.
On finding a potent ingredient that processes cardioprotection researchers examined the quercetin and polyuronide contents of rapidly dried onion (Allium cepa L. cv. Momiji No. 3) powder (OP) prepared from the outer layers (from second to the fourth scale leaves from the surface) of onion bulbs anti-atherogenic effect.
The study included rats fed a high-fat diet treated by quercetin 4'-glucoside (50%), free quercetin (30%) and quercetin 3,4'-glucoside (20%) as quercetin derivatives in boiling-water extraction.
According to the tested differentiation, in high-fat diet Wistar rats, additional OP did not show a significant difference in total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations compared to rats fed a high-fat diet without OP.
However, the atherogenic index (AI) associated with cardiovascular disease risk of Wistar rats fed an OP-added high-fat diet was lower compared to those fed with a diet without OP.
Moreover, the incremental elastic modulus (IEM), a measurement of the stiffness of the larger arteries from rats fed the OP-added diet was also significantly lower compared to rats fed by diet without OP.
Additionally, both rat groups were found to exert similar AI and IEM values if the rats fed the diet without OP were allowed spontaneous exercise.
In other words, OP protected the cardio-tissue by exerting an anti-atherogenic effect through other unknown mechanisms associated with regular exercise, without affecting the parameters of cholesterol.
Based on the results, researchers wrote, "These results suggest that OP intake is effective for decreasing the risk of arteriosclerosis".
Taken altogether, onion processed a higher mount of onionin A (ONA) may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of arteriosclerosis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
