Bilberry Balances the Gut Microbiota for Optimal Health, According to Studies

Scientists may have found a natural and herbal remedy for the improvement of digestive gut microbiota for health optimization, according to studies.

Gut microbiota or gastrointestinal microbiota, the complex community of microorganisms in our digestive tracts play a critical role in a variety of metabolic functions, including produced vitamins, synthesized all essential and nonessential amino acids, and carried out biotransformation of bile.

Gut microbiota protects the intestinal structures and functions by attaching to the gut wall against the entry of pathogenic, enteroinvasive bacteria into the epithelial cells.

In the immune perspective, gut microbiota protects the intestines by alerting the immune response against foreign invasion through specific receptors, leading to an immune system in inducing the proinflammatory cytokines.

However, the imbalance of digestive gut microbiota has been found to induce a number of diseases, syndromes, and functional aberrations, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and wider systemic manifestations of disease such as obesity, and type 2 diabetes.

Imbalanced gut microbiota is found in obese patients, compared to healthy weight individuals.

Dr. Kyle J. Wolf, the lead scientist in the investigation the link of obesity and gut microbiota, wrote, "
In recent years it has been definitively shown that microbiota in the gastrointestinal tract is altered in obese individuals".

And, "Normal humans and mice have 60% to 80% Firmicutes (which are primarily nonculturable, butyrate-producing Clostridium cluster XIVa) and 20% Bacteroidetes (Cytophaga-Flavobacterium-Bacteroides). However, the obese mouse model (ob/ob) had a 50% reduction in Bacteroidetes and an increase in Firmicutes. A similar decrease in Bacteroidetes and increase in Firmicutes is also seen when C57BL/6 mice are fed a high-fat (HF) diet".

The results in the mice model study strongly linked the Western diet and the risk of imbalanced gut microbiota in facilitating the onset of obesity.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

Scientists on finding a natural ingredient for the improvement of digestive system functioning in the elderly examined the bilberry anthocyanin extract consumption and healthy aging and the effects on intestinal barrier function and digestive enzyme activity.

In the aging rats selected to the study, injection of medium-dose bilberry anthocyanin at 20 mg per kg bw per day) showed to optimizing the intestinal function.

Analyzing the gut microbiota, consumption of bilberry anthocyanin balanced the levels of bacteria in the intestine by increasing the good bacterias such as Aspergillus oryzae, Lactobacillus, Bacteroides, Clostridiaceae-1, the Bacteroidales-S24-7- and the Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group) and decreasing the levels of harmful bacterias, such as Verrucomicrobia and Euryarchaeota.

However. injection of any dose higher than 20 mg per kg displayed the alternation of some intestinally beneficial bacteria in an adverse way.

Furthermore, besides improving the levels of gut microbiota, consumption of bilberry anthocyanin also induced the changes in short-chain fatty acids and the intestinal mucosal barrier, correlatedly.

In other words, the injection of the extract consumption also improved the decreased activity of digestive enzymes in breaking down the proteins into amino acids due to aging.

Dr. Li J, the lead scientist wrote, "Bilberry anthocyanin extract consumption is a potential approach for assisting healthy aging".

Moreover, in order to reveal more information about bilberry gut microbiota effects, researchers compared bilberries and cloudberries, the 2 berries on the.intestinal immune responses and gut microbiota.

Injection of bilberry not only reduced the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines through immunomodulatory activity but also improved the balance of the gut microbiota compared to the cloudberries and control group.

Interestingly, cloudberry inhibited and bilberry exhibited the expression of energy metabolism-related genes in the intestinal mucosa.

Additionally, the microbial profiles of cloudberry-fed mice clustered together associated with small adenoma size compared to the bilberry group.

The findings suggested that bilberry consumption demonstrated potential digestive health by attenuating of intestinal inflammation, improving microbial profiles, and exhibiting mucosal energy metabolism.

Taken altogether, bilberry processed a high amount of bioactive compounds may be considered a functional remedy for optimizing bodily health by balancing the levels of gut microbiota.

Bromelain Modulates Your Immune System Against Allergic Symptoms

Allergy, also known as an allergic disease is a group of conditions including include hay fever, food allergies, atopic dermatitis, allergic asthma, and anaphylaxis caused by the overreaction of the immune system response to harmless substances in the environment.

The most common symptoms of allergies are sneezing and runny nose, persistent coughing, skin rash, fatigue, gastrointestinal discomforts, headache, and fever.

In serious cases, people affected by allergies may also experience symptoms of shortness of breath.

Believe it or not, food allergies affect 4-6% of children and 4% of adults epidemiologically. According to the statistics, approximately, 32 million Americans have food allergies, including 5.6 million children under age 18.

Also, every year, in the U.S., 200,000 people require emergency medical care for allergic reactions to food.

There are many risk factors associated with the onset of allergies. However, foods, medications and insect stings are the most common triggers of anaphylaxis, a life-threating condition.

People who have asthma, a family history of asthma and allergies and are under 18 years of age are most at risk to develop an allergy and allergic complication.

Treatment of allergies is totally depending on the severity and types of the syndrome. Over-the-counter remedies such as antihistamines that block the effects of histamine, and decongestants and nasal steroid sprays may reduce symptoms in patients with the mild condition.

In a severe case, due to the condition have interfered with the quality of life of the patients, more options may be needed including allergy shots (immunotherapy), please check with your doctors

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient against allergic symptoms, researchers examined the effects of Bromelain (sBr), a mixture of cysteine proteases from pineapple in the incidence of atopic conditions.

The study included C57BL/6J mice sensitized with OVA/alum and challenged with 7 days OVA aerosol following by the sBr 6 mg/kg/0.5 ml or PBS vehicle administered throughout sensitization.

According to the tested assays, throughout the study, sBr treatment throughout OVA-alum sensitization significantly reduced the development of AAD (BAL eosinophils and lymphocytes).

In other words, sBr prevents the expression of allergic symptoms induced by OVA-specific IgE and OVA TET(+) cells by modulating the immune functioning.

In vitro, treatment of sBr significantly reduced CD44, a key receptor involved in lymphocyte infiltration of inflamed tissue in the initiation of the development of airway inflammation in a murine model of allergic asthma.

The results strongly suggested that sBr's processes anti-inflammatory and antiallergic properties.

Based on the findings, Dr. Secor ER Jr, the lead scientist said, "sBr was shown to reduce allergic sensitization and the generation of AAD upon antigen challenge".

Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of allergy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Bilberry, The Plant and Berry That Cure Dry Eye, Scientists Discover

On seeking natural therapy with no side effects, scientists may have found a herbal fruit for the cure of dry eye, according to studies.

Dry eye is a condition characterized by a lack of quality tears to lubricate and nourish the eye for clear vision.

In other words, dry eye is a condition caused by an imbalance of tear production and drainage or low-quality tear production. The condition is very common in the elderly.

There are certain risk factors that may affect the levels of quality of tears, such as aging (most senior age 65 and over have experience of dry eye), gender (the risk of dry eye is higher in women due to the change of hormone as a result of pregnancy and menopause), medications and long term of use of contact lens.

According to the statistics, in the United States, dry eye affects over 4.88 million Americans age 50 and older. The syndrome is most common in the population of middle-aged or older.

Although it is rare, untreated dry eye or serious dry eye syndrome has been associated with the risk of infection, leading to scarring, thinning, and even perforation of the cornea.

People with dry eye may experience symptoms of burning or scratchy sensation, stringy mucus in the eyes, eye redness and sensitivity to light.

Some people with severe conditions may have difficulty with nighttime driving.

If you have experienced some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of preventive measures.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of dry eye, a chronic disease of lachrymal fluid and cornea-conjunctival epithelium examined the bioavailability of a standardized bilberry extract in an animal model.

The study included 22 otherwise healthy subjects suffering from dry eye symptoms who were enrolled randomly assigned to receive the more bioavailable bilberry extract or placebo.

Out of 22 participants,11 subjects in the bilberry extract (Mirtoselect®) group and 10 subjects in the placebo group completed the clinical study.

According to the results of the assay analysis, bilberry extract showed a significant improvement in the volume of tear secretion compared to no change in the placebo group.

Mirtoselect® also was more effective in subjects with a higher tendency of dry eye.

The efficacy of bilberry in the treatment of dry eye was attributed to the stimulation of the production of antioxidant enzymes in the host and suppression of the overexpression of free radicals found in the dry eye participants.

Dr. Riva A the lead scientists suggested that bilberry extract can improve tear secretion and plasmatic antioxidant potential in subjects suffering from DED symptoms.

Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compounds may be considered a natural remedy for the treatment of dry eye with no side effects, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bromelain Speeds Up Skin Healing with No Side Effects

Skin healing is a natural process to reconstruct the skin back to its originated stage after skin damage.

Skin is a large organ in the human body which only protects our body against foreign invaders but also serves as a third detoxed system after the liver and kidney.

Skin healing is depending on the size of the wound, the small size can be healed quickly without using any medication. However, the large size wound in most cases is required stitches.

Similar to wound healing, at the acute phase of infection, the macrophages of the immune first line of defense stimulating the blood clot to cover the wound or cut and production of proinflammatory cytokines to destroy foreign invaders.

In this phase, patients may experience symptoms of skin redness, tender, and swelling around the wound or cut.

Depending on the size of a skin wound, the next overlap stage is broken blood vessels in the wound is repaired and new tissue is grown followed by the creation of collagen, the fibers that form the foundation for new tissue.

This process continues until the skin is stronger or back to the original form.

In the acute phase of infection, overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines induced by immune response may cause damage to healthy cells, leading scar forming.

Additionally, any interruption of these processed may induce the formation of scars.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

On finding a potential compound for speedup wound healing, researchers compared the structural integrity of bromelain (debridement enzyme) in the healing process.

The study included a combinational multiphasic delivery system that delivers biomolecules of bromelain through the fabrication of coaxial electrospinning of different biocompatible polymers.

In vitro, the fabricated scaffold delivery system sustained the release of debriding protease and its bioactive components in a timely fashion showed a significant effect in wound healing.

Furthermore, the fabricated scaffold used in debridement enzyme also promoted the wound healing process by its angiogenic potential through in vitro migration of endothelial cells and increased new capillaries from the existing blood vessel in response to wound healing.

Moreover, in vivo, studies also confirm the efficacy of the fabricated scaffold used in the delivery of bromelain.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Our results, therefore, open up a new avenue for designing a bioactive combinational multiphasic delivery system to enhance wound healing".

In order to assess the role and clinical advantages of enzymatic debridement by a mixture of proteolytic enzymes enriched in Bromelain (Nexobrid®) on wound healing, researchers examined the mutual experience of applying enzymatic debridement in more than 500 adult and pediatric patients by the consensus panelists.

The statement included the answer to questions related to pain management and anesthesia, the timing of application, technique of application, after-intervention care, skin grafting after enzymatic debridement, blood loss, training strategies and learning curve and areas of future research needs.

According to the statements returned by the participant, 68 consensus statements, enzymatic debridement used showed a higher degree of consensus with a unanimous consensus in 88.2% of statements, and lowest degree of consensus of 70% in only 3 statements.

Taken altogether, bromelain used alone or combined with the multiphasic delivery system may be considered supplements for the speedup wound healing, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Arnica in Ameliorated Pain and Muscle Tenderness After Intensive Exercise?

Herbal Arnica may have a therapeutic and enhanced physical performance through reduced pain associated with overworked muscles, some scientists suggested.

Arnica is a herbaceous species, genus perennial, belongings to the family Asteraceae, antive to Europe and Asia, used in herbal medicine for centuries to treat strains, sprains, and bruises.
Wound healing is a process of repairing after damage of skin, tissues, organs, etc.

The ingredients
Helenalin, chamissonolid, Sesquiterpene lactone, lignans of the furofuran, dibenzylbutyrolactone, dibenzylbutyrolactol types, pinoresinol, epipinoresinol, phillygenin, matairesinol, nortrachelogenin, and nortracheloside, six dibenzylbutyrolactol derivatives.

Arnica used in herbal medicine in reduced bruises, sprains, soreness, and swelling and for relief of arthritis, muscle, and joint pain.

According to some articles in herbal medicine, the application of herbal Arnica showed a significant effect in improved muscle pain and stiffness through its soothing, moisturizing comfort and relief from these symptoms activity.

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 53 subjects conducted by the Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program, researchers suggested that the opposite results were found after each participant received 2 tubes of cream, 1 with active Arnica and 1 with placebo.

According to the study, application of creams applied to the lower legs immediately after the exercise, and again at 24 and 48 hours postexercise according to the "RIGHT" or "LEFT" labels, application arnica strong increased Pain scores in compared to placebo, 24 hours after exercise but the injection pronounced no difference in day 3 and day 4 again in compared to placebo.

The results indicated that topical Arnica exerted a significant higher in pain score instead of relieved pain as expected by the study.

Dr. Adkison JD, the lead author, after taking into account other confounder said, "Rather than decreasing leg pain, arnica was found to increase leg pain 24 hours after eccentric calf exercises. This effect did not extend to the 48-hour measurement".
The above differentiation was supported by the investigation of the homeopathic Arnica 30X can reduce muscle soreness following long-distance running more than a placebo conducted by the Research Council for Complementary Medicine.

According to Dr. Vickers AJ, the lead scientist, in the total of 519 runners anticipating delayed-onset muscles soreness after long-distance races in the observation of subjects by visual analog scale and Likert scale of muscle soreness every morning and evening for the 5 days following their race, application of homeopathic medicine (Arnica 30x) showed no different of pain scores in compared to placebo.

As the Mean of 2-day visual analog soreness scores for Arnica and placebo were 45.2 mm and 41.0 mm, respectively.

And the 95% confidence interval of the population mean was between 8.81 mm in favor of placebo and 0.51 mm in favor of Arnica.

However, in the investigation to determine the effect of topical Arnica in reducing pain, indicators of inflammation and muscle damage, and in turn improved performance in well-trained males experiencing delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) in 20 well-trained males matched by maximal oxygen uptake (V̇O2 Max) completed a double-blind, randomized placebo-controlled trial, researchers found that topical Arnica reapplied every 4 waking hours showed a moderate in reduced pain and improved muscle tenderness three days post-eccentric exercise, but do not improved muscle damage and ameliorated inflammation through blood analysis.

Some researchers insisted that the conflict result of the studies may be attributed to the limitation of the small sample size, the geography, (including the climate and soil) of the herb was growth and when the herb was harvested,..... and suggested that a large sample size conduced by multi centers to viability the efficacy of herbal Arnica in either way.

Herbal Aloe Vera, the Potential Cure of Irritable Bowel Syndrome Remedy

Scientists may have found a natural remedy for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome with no side effects, according to studies.

Irritable bowel syndrome is a condition characterized by abdominal pain or discomfort, bloating, and alteration of bowel habits at least three times a month for the last 3 months without preexistence of other diseases.

According to the statistic, IBS affects approximately over 11% of the population globally and only 30% of these patients consult physicians for their IBS symptoms. People with IBS without seeing their doctors were found to experience a significantly reduced quality of life and psychological symptoms.

Compared to the male counterpart, women are at high risk of the condition. Believe or not there is 25% less IBS diagnosed in the population of over 50 years of age.

People with family history and the genetic factors are at a higher risk of the condition onset and most patients diagnosed with IBS are found infected by other functional disease compared to the general population.

Besides family history, gender, and genetic factors, other most common risk factors of IBS include smoking, frequent alcohol consumption, younger age, according to epidemiological studies.

Some researchers suggested that a sedentary lifestyle, a type of lifestyle involving little or no physical activity is also a major component in the Western world associated with IBS.

By examing the attenuation of gravitational aid to distal intestinal motility, resulting in damaging chronic intestinal distention, researchers at the McGill Centre for Studies in Aging, the prevalence of IBS irritable bowel syndrome have worsened in recent years owing to excessive dietary fiber intake.

Dr. said, "Potential solutions include augmenting weight-bearing time, moderating dietary fiber consumption, stimulating distal colon evacuation through chemical means and developing pharmaceuticals to block the reflexive distal colon distention associated with fiber consumption".

And, " Amplified intestinal distention commenced when all classes of Renaissance Europeans became the first group in human history to wear shoes, which led to a sedentary lifestyle that moderates gravitational aid to colon motility and evacuation".

Therefore, by engaging in daily moderate exercise and following a healthy diet, not only can prevent the syndrome but also treat IBS. Please consult with your dietitian for a better diet management that is suitable for you.

Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan.

Herbal medicine has become very popular for commercial cultivation due to its health benefits. Aloe vera has been used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of disease, including wound, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes, and elevated cholesterol, etc. It is also one of many popular herbs studied in scientific ways with some conflicting results.

The ten main areas of chemical constituents of Aloe vera include amino acids, anthraquinones, enzymes, minerals, vitamins, lignins, monosaccharide, polysaccharides, salicylic acid, saponins, and sterols.

With an aim to find a natural compound or remedy for the prevention and treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), researchers investigated the beneficial effects of a mixture of Aloe vera (AV) and Matricaria recutita (German chamomile, GC) in an experimental model.

IBS-induced rats by a 5-day divided to the groups of control (water), GC (300 mg/kg), loperamide (10 mg/kg), mixed AV and GC (50: 50 at doses of 150, 300 or 450 mg/kg assigned as Mix-150, Mix-300 and Mix-450, respectively).

The application of mixed AV and GC showed a significant reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress markers in the IBS-induced rats.

Futhermore, lipid peroxidation (LPO) in colonic cells was also decreased substantially in the mixture treatment group, compared to in the control group.

Moreover, GC inhibited only small bowel transit while the AV/GC mixture delayed gastric emptying at the doses of 150 and 300 mg/kg, compared to that of the AV/GC mixture which reduces colonic transit and small bowel transit at the dose of 150 mg/kg.

Dr. Asadi-Shahmirzadi A and colleagues at the final day of the experiment said, "The severity of stress-induced IBS was diminished by the AV/GC mixture at all doses used but not dose-dependently, via inhibiting colonic MPO activity and improving oxidative stress status".

In order to understand the additional effects of Aloe vera in the treatment of IBS, researchers examined the efficacy of AV on IBS in refractory secondary care patients.

Patients with IBS )with 58 patients randomized, 49 completed the protocol to 1 month and 41 to 3 months) were randomized to receive AV or matching placebo for a month.

Symptoms were assessed at baseline, 1 and 3 months.

Aloe vera treatment group showed a significant effect in diarrhea at 1 month. There is a possibility that improvement occurred in patients with diarrhea or alternating IBS whilst taking AV.

The findings suggested that Aloe vera used alone or combined with chamomile for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), pending to the results of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Anise, the Anti- Fungal Functional Remedy

Herbal Anise may be used for the prevention and treatment of fungal infection with no side effects, according to studies.

Yeasts, molds and mushrooms are types of fungi. The tiny microorganisms have cells with nuclear.

Most common fungal infections start from the lungs or the skin. Long-term use of antibiotics and people with the weakened immune system are susceptible to fungal infection, epidemiologically.

However, some researchers suggested that common risk factors for fungal infection also include pregnancy, diabetes mellitus, oral contraceptives, and inadequate therapy.

Candida albicans is the common cause of fungal infection in the Western world. It is a member of a large group of an organism whose cells contain complex structures enclosed within the membranes, including yeast and mold that live among the gut flora in the human mouth and gastrointestinal tract.

Under normal circumstances, Candida albicans that do cause harmful effects, but overgrowth results in candidiasis.

Dr. M. Mar Rodríguez and colleagues in the examined the obesity in the change of the human gut mycobiome, wrote, "The human intestine is home to a diverse range of bacterial and fungal species, forming an ecological community that contributes to normal physiology and disease susceptibility".

And, "Mucor racemosus and M. fuscus were the species more represented in non-obese subjects compared to obese counterparts. Interestingly, the decreased relative abundance of the Mucor genus in obese subjects was reversible upon weight loss".

These results clearly suggested that obese people are more susceptible to fungal infection due to reduced levels of healthy gut mycobiome in the gut. Weight loss can reverse this change.

Anise is a flowering plant of the species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belonging to the family Apiaceae native to Egypt and the Mediterranean region.

The popular herb has been used in traditional herbal medicine as a fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners and stomachic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative, digestive, expectorant, stimulant, and tonic agent to treat head-lice and mites, increase blood pressure, prevent formation of gas in the gastrointestinal tract and menstrual cramps, etc.

Besides the main ingredient Anethole, the herbal plant also contains D-pinene, I-phellandrene, Alpha-terpineol, Safrol, Methyl chavicol, Resin, Shikimic acid, etc.

On examing the antifungal activity of p-anisaldehyde (1), o-anisaldehyde (2) and m-anisaldehyde isolated from the herbal Anise in thirty-six fluconazole-sensitive and eleven fluconazole-resistant Candida isolates, researchers showed that all compounds exerted a significant effect in inhibiting the growth and sensitivity of the organisms at different concentrations.

The compound-1, compound-2, and compound-3 exerted a rapid irreversible action on fungal cells through the fungal membrane-located target.

All the compounds inhibited the electrochemical gradients creation in the plasma membrane of the fungi, at their respective MIC(90) values, leading to intracellular acidification and cell death observed by the expression of deep wrinkles, deformity and flowed content in the fungal membrane.

These results indicate that compound-1, compound-2, and compound-3 have significant antifungal activity against Candida.

In vitro, researchers examined the antifungal activities of fluid extract and essential oil obtained from anise fruits Pimpinella anisum L. (Apiaceae) on clinical isolates of seven species of yeasts and four species of dermatophytes.

Anise fluid extract showed antimycotic activity against Candida albicans, C. parapsilosis, C. tropicalis, C. pseudotropicalis and C. krusei with MIC values between 17 and 20%.

Anis fruits extracts also showed growth promotion activity on Geotrichum spp, a fungus associated with skin, sputum and feces.

Furthermore, Anise fruit extract inhibited the growth of dermatophyte species (Trichophyton rubrum, T. mentagrophytes, Microsporum canis and M. gypseum) with MIC values between 1.5 and 9.0%.

Anise essential oil showed strong antifungal activity against yeasts with MIC lower than 1.56% (V/V) and dermatophytes with MIC lower than 0.78%, compared to the water extract.

These findings once again suggested that Anise essential oil exhibited stronger antifungal activities against yeasts and dermatophytes with MIC values between 0.10 and 1.56% (V/V), respectively, compared to the water extract.

Taken altogether, herbal Anise may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of fungal infection with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of a large and multicenter human study.
