Arnica may have a therapeutic effect in enhanced immune function, some scientists suggested.
The results of the analysis were conducted by a number of respectable university, including the University Medical Center Freiburg, and published on several medical online literatures.
Arnica is a herbaceous species, genus perennial, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia, used in herbal medicine for centuries to treat strains, sprains, and bruises.
Wound healing is a process of repairing after the damage of the skin, tissues, organs, etc.
The ingredients
Helenalin, chamissonolid, Sesquiterpene lactone, lignans of the furofuran, dibenzylbutyrolactone, dibenzylbutyrolactol types, pinoresinol, epipinoresinol, phillygenin, matairesinol, nortrachelogenin, and nortracheloside, six dibenzylbutyrolactol derivative.
In the investigation to compare Anise tinctures and sesquiterpene lactones (SL), the secondary plant metabolites isolated form of Arnica, anti-inflammatory effects in inhibited expression of nuclear factor (NF)-kappaB activation, researchers found that application of Arnica tinctures and SL potently suppressed NF-kappaB activation and IL-12 production in dendritic cells at high concentrations but has immunostimulatory effects at low concentrations.
The nuclear factor NF-κB pathway is considered as a prototypical proinflammatory signaling pathway and IL-12 is an immune response signaling pathway in response to antigenic stimulation.
Furthermore, in contrast to general belief, the application of Arnica tinctures exerted an effect in suppressed contact hypersensitivity to sensitizer trinitrochlorobenzene and activation of dendritic cells.
These results indicated that herbal Anise inhibits the induction of contact hypersensitivity through its anti-inflammatorily immunosuppressive effect via immune regulation.
In impairing protein and DNA synthesis, injection of helenalin also displayed a deregulated and unwanted T cell-mediated immune responses, through induced apoptosis in activated CD4+ T cells, by triggering the mitochondrial pathway of apoptosis.
CD4+ T cells expression is a displaying CD4 molecule on their surface induced by glycoprotein found on the surface of immune cells in sending signals to T helper cells to initiate an immune pro-inflammatory response to the infectious site.
More precisely, helenalin deactivated the production of CD4+ T cells through inhibition of proliferation by G2/M cell cycle arrest accompanied by the accumulation of cell cycle regulatory proteins.
Further examination also found that helenalin injection enhanced function of p53 in inhibited CD4+ T cells cycle division through its ability as a tumor suppression as well as increased expression of reactive oxygen species in facilitated cytotoxicity.
Moreover, helenalin also deactivated CD4+ T cells expression by suppressed nuclear translocation of NFATc2 with function in response to the activation of CD4+ T cells.
Dr. Berges C1, the lead author, at the end of the experiment said, "helenalin can be defined as a new immunosuppressive compound suited for the treatment of deregulated and unwanted T cell-mediated immune responses".
The evidence suggested that Arnica and its bioactive compound helenalin may be considered as a functional herb in improved immune function. However, intake of Arnica extract and supplement should be taken with extreme care as toxicity was found in case of overdose.

Artichoke, the Mediator for Sex Steroid Hormone Metabolism, According to Studies
Artichoke may have a profound and positive effect on sex steroid hormone metabolism with no side effects, according to studies.
The steroid hormones are hormones made mainly by endocrine glands such as the gonads (testis and ovary), the adrenals and (during gestation) by the fetoplacental unit.
In other words, steroid hormones can be grouped into two classes: corticosteroids (typically made in the adrenal cortex, hence cortico-) and sex steroids (made in the gonads or placenta).
Metabolism plays many important roles in steroid hormone action in reaching the target of production and stopping production when the target is reached within the target tissues.
The function of sex steroid hormone is to influence the maintenance and growth of muscles, and the decline in androgens, estrogens, and progesterone due to aging are associated with the loss of muscular function and mass.
In male puberty, testosterone, the sex hormones produced by luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), plays an important role in the physical changes associated with puberty, and in testicular maturation.
In female puberty, increased hormones luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) stimulates the production of hormones including estrogen and progesterone, leading to breast change and menstrual period.
In the reproductive function, sex steroid hormones stimulate the development of the maturing ovarian follicle and control ovum production in the female and sperm production in the male.
In the nonreproductive function, receptors for estrogens, progesterone, and androgens are associated with the function of bone, brain, cardiovascular system. The results suggested that sex steroid hormones may play a critical role in the pathophysiology of some diseases (osteoporosis, Alzheimer, atherosclerosis).
Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.
The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.
Researchers on finding potential and natural ingredients for the mediation of the sex steroid hormones and metabolic activity examined the effects of a combination botanical supplement on premenopausal women.
The placebo-controlled, parallel-arm, pilot study tested the effects of two naturopathic interventions over five menstrual cycles in 40 healthy premenopausal women.
Participants were given either dietary changes (3 servings/d crucifers or dark leafy greens, 30 g/d fiber, 1-2 liters/d water, and limiting caffeine and alcohol consumption to 1 serving each/wk; n = 10), and placebo (n = 15).
During the early follicular phase, the botanical supplement decreased dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), an endogenous steroid hormone(-13.2%; P = 0.02), which has been found to affect how estrogen works. Increased expression of DHEA is associated with the sensitive conditions of breast cancer, uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, endometriosis, or uterine fibroids and dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate (-14.6%; P = 0.07).
Compared to placebo, the formula also inhibited the levels of dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate (DHEA-S), an endogenous androstane steroid that is produced by the adrenal cortex and a possible markers for hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) function in patients with large pituitary adenomas.
Furthermore, the combination reduced the expression of androstenedione, a steroid hormone in a normal range and improved the production of the hormone testosterone and enhanced recovery and growth from exercise, and increased sexual desire and performance. Overexpression of androstenedione has been found to facilitate the growth of endometrial cancer.
Levels of estrone-sulfate a form of estrogen found to alleviate symptoms of menopause are hormone replacement therapy also decreased by the injection of the formula. Increased levels of estrone-sulfate are involved in the onset of Cancers associated with the response to estrogen.
Also compared to placebo, no other trends or statistically significant changes were observed. In other words, comparing dietary changes with placebo, no statistically significant differences were observed other than those mentioned above.
The findings strongly suggested that the formula may have strong activity against the overexpression of certain steroid hormones involved in the risk of mammary cancers.
Taken altogether, artichoke used alone or combined with other herbal medicine including Curcuma longa, Rosmarinus officinalis, Schisandra Chinensis, Silybum marinum, and Taraxacum officinalis may be considered mediation of steroid hormones against the onset of certain cancers in premenopausal women, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bilberry May Process Anti Leukemia Potency, Studies Revealed
Bilberry may have a strong and positive effect in reducing the risk and treatment of leukemia with no side effects, according to studies.
Leukemia is chronic and medical conditions arisen by the blood-forming tissues, including the bone marrow and the lymphatic system.
According to the statistic provided by the US Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma cause the deaths of an estimated 58,100 people in the US in 2018, accounting for 9.5 percent of the deaths from all cancers in 2018.
The causes of leukemia are unknown. However, some researchers suggested that family history, smoking habits, genetic disorder syndrome, a blood disorder, exposure to radiation and toxic chemical and previous cancer treatment are some prevalent risks of the cancer onset.
However, most people exposed to some of the aforementioned risk factors have never developed leukemia.
Besides general symptoms of cancer, patients also experience symptoms related to the immune system such as easily bleeding, frequent infection.
Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) is one of the most common forms of leukemia, affecting both children and adults.
The five-year survival rate for AML is 26.9 percent.
Some researchers suggested that genetic preposition may have a strong implication to induce the onset of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) as most of the cancer is found in the children.
Dr. Hamerschlak N, in the assessment of the genetics and prognostic factors of leukemia, said, " In chronic myeloid leukemia, clonal evolution is associated with progression to the blast crisis. Patients on imatinib who cease responding may have mutations on their ABL gene. Finally, in acute lymphoblastic leukemia, factors such as hyperdiploidy and t 12:21 are associated with a good prognosis, whereas carriers of t 4:11 and t 9:22 are considered high-risk patients".
The results strongly suggested that if you carry any genetic preposition associated with the risk of leukemia, please have blood tests annually for preventive measures.
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The herbal plant has been used as foods and herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
Scientists on finding potential and natural compounds for the treatment of leukemia evaluated the pro-apoptotic effect of an anthocyanin-rich dietary bilberry extract (Antho 50) on B CLL cells.
The study is to compare the B CLL cells from 30 patients and on peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from healthy subjects.
Antho 50 induced concentration- and time-dependent pro-apoptotic effects in B CLL cells but little or no effect in PBMCs.
The main phenolic compounds of the bilberry extract are delphinidin-3-O-glucoside and delphinidin-3-O-rutinoside induced cancer cell death through the pro-apoptotic effect.
The efficacy of Antho 50-induced apoptosis was attributed to activated the protein associated with programming cell death and inhibited the gene associated with cancer proliferation.
Furthermore, Antho 50 significantly induced PEG-catalase-sensitive in the generation of reactive oxygen species in B CLL cells, leading to cytotoxicity.
The findings suggested that bilberry exhibited anti-leukemia activity through several mechanisms, including cell death pathways.
In order to reveal more information about bilberry in the inhibition of leukemia, researchers compared the anticancer effect of ethanol extracts of 10 edible berries.
Bilberry extract was found to be the most effective at inhibiting the growth of HL60 human leukemia cells through apoptotic cell bodies and cell degradation in vitro.
The antileukemia effects of bilberry extract probably were attributed to the contents of phenolic compounds, including anthocyanins, which showed a significant radical scavenging activity which has been found to protect the integrity of the cell against DNA alternation.
Moreover, pure delphinidin and malvidin isolated from the bilberry extract also found to induce apoptosis in HL60 cells.
Dr. Katsube N and colleagues wrote, " the bilberry extract and the anthocyanins, bearing delphinidin or malvidin as the aglycon, inhibit the growth of HL60 cells through the induction of apoptosis" in the final report.
Taken altogether, bilberry processed a high amount of bioactive compounds may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of leukemia, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bromelain Kills Ovarian Cancer Cells in Vitro
Ovarian cancer is a chronic condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissue of the ovary.
Most cases of ovarian cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the tissue of the ovary.
In the very early stage of ovarian cancer, patients may not experience any specific symptoms. However, after penetrating into the deeper layers and increasing in size, ovarian tumors may cause symptoms of an abdominal mass, bloating, back pain, urinary urgency, constipation, pelvic pain, abnormal vaginal bleeding and buildup of fluid in the abdominal cavity, accompanied with general symptoms shared by other types of cancer.
At the advanced stage, the cancer cells can also travel a distance away from the ovary to infect other healthy tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.
Ovarian cancer is classified into 5 stages
1. Stage 0,
If the cancerous cell has not penetrated in deeper tissue but in the surface of the ovarian lining.
2. Stage I
In stage I, The cancerous cells are no longer on the surface they have invaded into deep ovaries lining, but still completely inside the ovaries.
a. Stage IA1
The cancer is not ≤ 3 mm (1/8 inch) deep and ≤ 7 mm (1/4 inch) wide.
a.1. Stage IA1:
The spreading is < 3mm(1/8 inch) deep and & less than 7mm (1/4 inch) wide.
a.2. Stage IA2: The invasion area is ≥ 3 mm but ≤ 5 mm (about 1/5 inch) deep and & less than 7 mm (about 1/4 inch) wide.
b. Stage IB:
Cancer in this stage has invaded the connective tissue, & less than 5cm (2 inches).
b.1. Stage IB1:
Cancer is 4 cm large (1 3/4 inches).
b.2. Stage IB2:
Cancer is ≥ 4 cm (1 3/4 inches) but & less than 5cm (2 inch)
3. Stage II
In stage II, the cancerous cells have spread to distant tissues but are still within the lung.
4. Stage III
In this stage, cancerous cells have spread to the tissues immediately surrounding the lung.
5. Stage IV
In this stage, cancerous cells have spread to the tissues immediately outside of the ovaries, other distant parts of the body
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of colon cancer, researchers evaluated the effect of a high quantity of bromelain from pineapple anticarcinogenic activity against A2780 ovarian cancer cell lines.
In order to prevent the homogenization, ultrafiltration, precipitation, and dialysis in contributing to heavy loss of bromelain, fresh pineapple juices from the flesh (PJ-F), core (PJ-C) and stem (PJ-S) were selected as a source of crude bromelain.
Bromelain concentrations of PJ-F, PJ-C, and PJ-S (1 μg/ml, 10 μg/ml, 100 μg/ml and 1000 μg/ml) were selected to the study.
According to the tested assays, a 100 μg/ml concentration of bromelain showed an exceptional efficiently to inhibit the cancer cells without affecting the nearby normal cells.
Based on the basis of morphological alterations using fluorescent and inverted phase-contrast microscopes, all concentration induced cancer cell death through apoptosis.
Additionally, the efficacy of fresh pineapple juices that kills cancer cells on A2780 cells was attributed to the inhibition of tumor colony-forming abilities.
In other words, PJ-F, PJ-C, and PJ-S effectively suppressed the colony formation in cancer cells.
Based on the results, Dr. Madihah Binti Abdul Gani, the lead scientist said, "PJ-F, PJ-C, and PJ-S may have the potential to induce anticarcinogenic effects through apoptosis to A2780 and ... in vitro".
Taken altogether, bromelain found in fresh pineapple juices may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of ovarian cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Burdock, the Natural Alternative for Antibiotic with No Side Effects
Herbal Burdock may be the next pharmaceutical target to extract a single ingredient for the treatment of infectious diseases, some scientists found.
Infectious diseases are a class of diseases caused by the invasion of pathogenic microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, parasites or fungi.
Bacteria is a type of biological cell consisted of a single cell with a simple internal structure.
Most common diseases caused by bacteria include strep throat, urinary tract infections, and tuberculosis.
Infection occurs when the bacteria successfully invade the body and start to multiply. Most cases of infectious diseases caused by bacteria are treated with antibiotics.
And, most cases of infectious disease are transmitted by airborne you can get sick if you breathe into the air that carries infectious bacteria in air particles, vector-borne if you are stunk by the insect that the bacteria and vehicle-borne if you are eating food or carrying the materials contaminated by the bacteria.
Most cases of bacterial invasion are met with the first line of immune white blood cells. In the active division of bacteria in the acute phase of infectious, the immune system response activated the production of the proinflammatory cytokine to the site of infection with an aim to kill off all bacteria.
However, if the immune fails to kill off all the bacteria within the 3 - 8 weeks period, it then will adapt to the change, leading to chronic inflammatory and infectious diseases.
Not all bacteria are bad, some play an important role to boost the immune function. Dr. Hsin-Jung Wu, the lead author in the study the effect of gut microbiota in immune homeostasis and autoimmunity, said, " The gut microbiota that resides in the gastrointestinal tract provides essential health benefits to its host, particularly by regulating immune homeostasis" and " gut microbiota regulates innate and adaptive immune homeostasis, which in turn can affect the development of not only intestinal but also systemic autoimmune diseases:.
In other words, gut microbiota promotes and balances the immune system in eliminating invading pathogens, while still maintaining self-tolerance to avoid autoimmunity, the critical roles of the immune system for the body’s health.
Burdock is the plant in the group of biennial thistles, genus Arctium, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to the Euro.
The plant has been used over thousands of years in China and other traditional herbal medicine as a diuretic, diaphoretic, and a blood purifying agent and to treat wounds and infections stomach ulcers and other digestive problems.
The ingredients of herbal Burdock include carbonated water, sugar,, manloid colorings, phosphoric acid, citric acid and a good amount of dietary fiber, calcium, potassium, and amino acids and chemicals compounds of guaianolide, arctinone, arctinal, methyl arctate,11-tridecadien-3,5,7,9-tetraynde-hydrocostus lactone, dehydrodihydrocostus lactone, 3-octenoic acid, 3-hexenoic acid etc.
In finding a natural ingredient or whole foods to replace the conventional antibiotics for the treatment of bacterial infection, the research team of infectious diseases at the University of Ribeirão Preto evaluated the antibacterial activity of a phytotherapeutic agent prepared from an ethyl acetate fraction (AcOEt) extracted from Arctium lappa.
The study includes 27 maxillary canines inoculated with a mixed bacterial suspension of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Streptococcus mutans, and Candida albicans.
The teeth were divided into three groups and their canals filled with:
* Group 1: calcium hydroxide and propylene glycol;
* Group 2, a paste containing AcOEt fraction of A. lappa and propylene glycol; and
* Group 3, propylene glycol (control).
Observation of the 7, 14 and 30 days, when three teeth from each group were opened, researchers found that group 2 treated by the Burdock extract showed a severe growth at 7 days, but no growth at 14 and 30 days, compared to mild growth in group 1 and control.
These results clearly indicated the phytotherapeutic agent extracted from an AcOEt fraction of herbal Burdock process a strong antibacterial activity against the growth of all the microorganisms.
In bacterial straits Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis and Candida albicans used for the investigation of the antimicrobial activity of rough extracts from leaves of Arctium lappa and their phases, researchers at the University of Ribeirão Preto (UNAERP) showed some bioactive compounds with chemical structures of different polarities were found to exert the effect of the extract through different phases of inhibition, depending on the target microorganisms.
Dr. Holetz FB, the lead scientist at the Universidade Estadual de Maringá in the investigation of the ethnobotanical use of the herbal species for the treatment of various infectious diseases, explained, herbal Burdock, one the Brazilian folk medicine may be used for the treatment of chronic infectious diseases induced by bacteria and yeasts.
Herbal Burdock was one out 13 herbal medicine was studied for its antimicrobial activity against bacteria and yeasts, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli.
The evidence showed that herbal Burdock processed abundant bioactive constituents may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases without inducing any side effectsb

Antioxidant Indicaxanthin Processes Cytoprotective Effects
Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells growing and multiplying disordered and uncontrollable ways in our body, due to the change of cellular DNA.
Most cases of cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the tissue of the organ.
However, at the later stage of the tumor progression, if undetected, the large size of the tumor can suppress and break the nearby small blood vessel, leading to internal bleeding and severe if the tumor also suppresses the nearby nerve cells.
Also, at this stage cancer cells can also travel a distance away from the original site to affect other healthy tissue and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.
Symptoms of cancer at this stage are totally depended on the affected area, including vomiting blood in oral and lung cancer blood in the urine in bladder cancer. hoarseness in throat cancer. ... Persistent lumps in the breast and lymph cancer and indigestion or difficulty swallowing in digestive related cancers.
Cytotoxicity is a process to induce the toxic agent to kill cells including healthy cells and cancer cells.
Cytotoxic drugs or cytostatics are cytotoxic chemotherapy that destroys cancer cells. Cytotoxic drugs have been found to induce healthy and cancer cell apoptosis by inhibiting cell division. The chemo-drugs also are transported by the bloodstream to kill cancer cells a distance away in case of distant spreading.
Some herbal medicines and phytochemicals have also been found to induce a cytotoxic effect on cancer cells by exhibiting the production of free radical toxic activity and protecting the nearby healthy cells through their antioxidant activity.
Researchers do not know the exact causes of cancers, but they do know, according to epidemiological studies that age, alcohol cancer, chronic Inflammation, genetic proposition, unhealthy diet, change of hormones use of immunosuppression, infectious agents, obesity, exposure to radiation and sunlight, use of tobacco are most common risk factors associated with the onset of some specific cancers.
People with a weakened immune function are at a higher risk of cancer, compared to people with a normal or healthy immune system.
Dr. Candeias SM, the lead scientist said, "The immune system plays a pivotal role in the maintenance of the integrity of an organism. Besides the protection against pathogens, it is strongly involved in cancer prevention, development and defense".
And, "the immune system and developing tumors are intimately intertwined. Anti-tumor immune responses can be prominently boosted by multimodal therapies aiming at the one hand to induce immunogenic tumor cell death forms and on the other hand to actively counteract the immune suppressive microenvironment based on the tumor itself".
Indicaxanthin is phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belongings to the group of Betalains found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.
On finding a potential compound that processes cytoprotective activity, researchers examined the effect of Indicaxanthin effects on human beta-thalassemia RBCs.
In vitro, beta-thalassemia RBCs submitted to oxidative hemolysis by cumene hydroperoxide was inhabited by the indicaxanthin at 1.0-10 microM by enhancing the resistance of the destruction of red blood cells in a dose-dependent manner.
Further, administration of indicaxanthin not only prevented lipid and hemoglobin (Hb) oxidation) to induce cell death but also restored the levels of vitamin E and GSH depletion which was retarded by oxidative hemolysis.
In vivo, indicaxanthin also improves the levels of blood from thalassemia patients by recovering the soluble cell compartment of the RBCs.
According to the spectrophotometric study, compared to Trolox or vitamin C, indicaxanthin are more effective in the inhibition of the preferred-Hb generated in solution induced by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in the diagnosis of anemia.
In other words, the phytochemical protects the quality and quantity of blood in human beta-thalassemia RBCs.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "indicaxanthin can be incorporated into the redox machinery of beta-thalassemia RBC and defend the cell from oxidation, possibly interfering with preferred-Hb, a reactive intermediate in the hydroperoxide-dependent Hb degradation".
Taken altogether, indicaxanthin may be considered a cytoprotective effects, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Ashwagandha, the Anti-Insulin Resistance Remedy
Insulin resistance is a hallmark of type 2 diabetes caused by the inability of the body to use insulin properly to convert glucose to energy in the muscles, body fat, intestine, and liver.
According to the statistics, over 100 million Americans are living with insulin resistance. Approximately 1 in 3, including half of those age 60 and older have a silent blood sugar problem known as insulin resistance.
Insulin resistance is not caused by a single factor. The increase in age, ethnicity, overweight or obese, too much belly fat, physical inactivity, smoking and certain medical conditions such as Cushing’s disease or polycystic ovary disease are some of the prevalent factors found in patients with the condition.
Epidemiologically, over time, insulin resistance associated with a genetic preposition can reduce the function of the beta cells in the pancreas, leading to the onset of prediabetes and diabetes.
Unmanaged insulin resistance has been found to induce polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia, and weight loss associated with hyperglycemia, particularly in patients with hypertension.
Conventionally, there is no effective treatment for insulin resistance. However, a change of diets such as low-carbohydrate and ketogenic diets or very-low-calorie diet and regular physical activity patients to prevent the risk of obesity may reduce the effects of insulin resistance.
Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.
The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.
On finding a potent compound for the treatment of hyperglycemia, researchers examined the effects of Withania somnifera root (WS) on insulin resistance in an animal model.
Selected 48 Wistar-Albino male rats in the study were randomly divided into four groups (n=12); Group I as control, Group II as sham-treated with WS by 62.5mg/g per diet, Group III fructose-fed rats received 10%W/V fructose, and Group IV fructose- and WS-fed rats.
According to the analysis of blood samples collected at the end of the experiment, group III showed a significant increase in the levels of blood glucose, insulin, homeostasis associated with insulin resistance compared to controls.
Furthermore, levels of inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6, and TNF-α levels in blood serum of group III fed by fructose were also increased compared to control.
Expression of TNF-α and IL-6, levels induced inflammation have been found to cause insulin resistance by affecting glucose uptake, epidemiologically.
However, Treatment with WS in group rats fed with fructose demonstrated significant inhibition of increases in glucose, insulin, HOMA-R, IL-6, and TNF-α, the parameters associated with insulin resistance.
Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and treatment of insulin resistance, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter study.
