Artichoke may be used as a natural remedy for the treatment of hepatic fibrosis with no side effects, according to studies.
Hepatic fibrosis is a chronic liver disease due to liver scars overwhelmingly building up in the connective tissue in the liver.
The severe case of hepatic fibrosis can lead to cirrhosis, affecting the liver function in filtering the blood. In the US, over 4.5 million people are affected by liver cirrhosis, leading to the death of 12/100,000 of the population every year.
Most common causes of liver fibrosis are excessive alcohol drinking and infected by the hepatitis virus.
Other risk factors associated with the prevalent risk liver fibrosis are non-alcoholic steatohepatitis and autoimmune liver disease, including autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis or primary sclerosing cholangitis.
However, the increase in age may also have a strong implication on the disease onset.
Dr. Bénédicte Delire, the lead scientists, in the concern of liver fibrosis in the aging mice population said, "Old mice developed more severe fibrosis compared to young ones as evaluated by Sirius red morphometry" and " While fibrosis resolution occurred in young mice within 96 hours, no significant fibrosis attenuation was observed in old mice".
"Although recruitment of monocyte-derived macrophages was similar in young and old livers, young macrophages had globally a remodeling phenotype while old ones, a pro-fibrogenic phenotype".
The results suggested that the elderly are associated with the more severe fibrosis, due to the weakened immune system
Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.
The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.
Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of hepatic fibrosis, before the excessive connective tissue builds up in the liver progressing to chronic liver diseases such as cirrhosis and liver cancer examined the liver protective effect of artichoke against the liver fibrosis.
The study included 12 groups of rats that were administered JAT, interferon, and ribavirin either separately or in combination from day one of CCL4 administration until the end of the study.
Observation of the killed animals after 8 weeks, CCL4- induced hepatotoxicity exerted a significant increase level of hepatic protein expression levels associated with cell cycle arrest through the function of tumor-suppressive activity.
Furthermore, the levels of enzymes and protein associated with cell apoptosis such as p53, BAX, and TGF-β also were also increased in CCL-4 induced hepatotoxic rat group.
Injection JAT rats not only exerted a strong effect in normalizing the function of proteins and enzymes in the induction of liver cell death but also improved the liver response to ribavirin and interferon used for the treatment of HCV infection.
Dr. Abdel-Hamid NM and colleagues in the final report wrote, "addition of JAT as a supportive regimen to interferon and ribavirin effectively potentiates their anti-fibrotic effects".
Moreover, the observation of four mice groups infected with parasite S. mansoni with the first three groups received ALE, ALE + PZQ and PZQ respectively compared to the 4th and 5th group acted as the positive control and negative control, respectively suggested that ALE caused significant reduction of granuloma diameter, improvement of liver functions and liver fibrosis.
The efficacy of ALE was attributed to the increase the hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) recruitment inside granuloma associated with the liver response to infection, inflammation, or the presence of a foreign substance, and limited liver fibrosis by their inhibition in the peri- and inter-granuloma liver tissue.
However, in spite of the ALE liver protective activity against the formation of liver fibrosis and increased liver functioning, ALE showed no effect against parasite infection.
Taken altogether, artichoke may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of liver fibrosis depending on the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bromelain Inhibited Metabolic Factors Associated with Cardiovascular Diseases Developing
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a group of medical conditions associated with blood vessels and the heart.
Depending on the location of blood flow is blocked, cardiovascular diseases can be classified into
Heart disease, including
* Heart disease affects heart chambers
Heart failure caused by the heart not pumping as much blood as it should.
* Heart disease affects heart muscles
The heart muscles thickens and become stiff, increasing the amount of pressure required to expand for blood flows into the heart or the narrowing of the passage as a result of obstructing blood flow out of the heart.
* Heart disease affects heart valves
These types of heart diseases occur when the mitral valve in the heart is narrowing causing the heart to work harder to pump blood from the left atrium into the ventricle.
* Heart disease affecting coronary arteries and coronary veins
The malfunctioning of the heart may be due to heart muscle damage caused by narrowed or blocked arteries.
5. Heart disease affects heart lining
Rheumatic heart disease results from inflammation of the heart lining when too much fluid builds up in the lungs leading to pulmonary congestion.
6. Heart disease affects the electrical system
The electrical system within the heart is responsible for ensuring the heart beats correctly. Any malfunction of the electrical system in the heart causes a fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat.
and stroke, including
* Ischemic stroke caused by a clot or other blockage within an artery leading to the brain.
* Hemorrhagic stroke caused by the vessel in the brain rupturing that leads to blood leaking into the brain.
According to statistics provided by the CDC, approximately, 600,000 people die of heart disease in the US every year, according to 1 in every 4 deaths. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women.
On the other hand, more than 795,000 people in the United States have a stroke every year, including 610,000 with a first or new stroke. 87% of all strokes are ischemic strokes.
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
In seeking a potential compound for the treatment of cardiovascular disease, researchers investigated whether the dietary supplement (bromelain) has the potential to reduce plasma fibrinogen and other cardiovascular disease's (CVD) risk factors in patients with diabetes.
The 12 weeks randomized placebo-controlled, double-blind, parallel design, efficacy study was carried out in China including 68 Chinese diabetic patients [32 males and 36 females; Han origin, the mean age of 61.26 years (standard deviation (SD), 12.62 years)] with at least one CVD risk factor.
Patients were randomized into either bromelain or placebo groups. While the bromelain group received a bromelain capsule(1,050 mg, taken (2×350 mg) after breakfast and another (350 mg) after dinner, the placebo group received a placebo capsule which consisted of inert ingredient with no treatment effect.
According to the tested assays, the bromelain group at the end of the study showed a mean reduction of 0.13 g/L of fibrinogen level, compared with the mean reduction of 0.36 g/L in the placebo group.
Although there is no difference in mean change in other CVD risk factors (blood lipids, blood pressure), blood glucose, C-reactive protein, and anthropometric measures, however, according to the additional examination, researchers found statistical differences in fibrinogen may have influenced the results of bromelain effects on CVD.
In order to reveal more information about bromelain anti CVD activity, researchers launched a study by reviewing the correlated study on online medical literature.
According to the results of 6 papers met the inclusion criteria out of 223 papers retrieved, bromelain showed a significant effect on acute thrombophlebitis, by decreasing aggregation of blood platelets.
Furthermore, injection of bromelain also exhibited a cardioprotective effect, by ameliorating rejection-induced arterial wall remodeling, preventing thrombin-induced human platelet aggregation and reducing thrombus formation.
Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered supplements for the prevention of cardiovascular disease, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Ashwagandha, the Potent Anti Cancer Activity in Vitro and Vivo
Cancer is a class of diseases associated with abnormal cell growth in a specific tissue of an organ, due to the alternation of DNA.
A primary tumor or original tumor is a tumor that is at the original site where it first arose where tumor progression began and proceeded to yield a cancerous mass.
Cancer cells that grow to its tumor size, can invade and kill their neighbor cells by producing abnormal or excessive signaling chemicals (hormones or cytokines) which upset the normal chemical balance of the body and alter the metabolic pathways, leading to disordered and violent cellular behavior.
Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of tissue. At the early stage, due to the small size of the tumor, most patients are asymptomatic.
However, at the advanced stage, the oversize tumor can press on the nearby nerve cells and blood vessels, leading to bleeding and localized pain and symptoms accompanied by the general symptoms shared by other types of cancer, such as unintended weight loss.
Furthermore, at this stage, cancer cells can also travel a distance away from the originated site to infect other healthy cells and tissue, leading to secondary metastasis.
Localized symptoms are totally depending on the types of cancer.
In the cell cycle division perspective, under normal circumstances, cell growth is a natural process. Every day millions of cells grow to replace millions of dead cells and keep our bodies in balance and healthy.
Sometimes, acceleration of cell growth is necessary to prevent further damage to the body organ, such as cut, injure, etc., but after fulfilling their purposes, the growth of cells is back to a normal rate again.
However, if the DNA of a cell is altered, it can multiply indefinitely compared to limit cell cycle division in a normal cell.
Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.
The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.
With an aim to discover a natural compound for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the anticancer activity in the water extract of Ashwagandha leaves (ASH-WEX) in vitro and in vivo.
According to the results from the tested analysis, ASH-WEX not only demonstrated a cytotoxic effect on cancer cells selectively, and also induced tumor suppression in vivo.
Triethylene glycol (TEG), an active compound found in the extract processed the strongest anti-cancer property compared to other chemical constituents.
Additionally, ASH-WEX activated the genes associated with tumor suppression in cancer cells.
Furthermore, the extract induced the increase of protein that regulates mitosis and decrease of proteins associated with cell cycle division without causing harm to normal cells.
Moreover, ASH-WEX also inhibited the matrixes involved in cancer metastasis, without affecting the normal cells.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote in the final report, "ASH-WEX and TEG have selective cancer cell growth arrest activity and hence may offer natural and economic resources for anticancer medicine".
Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of cancer, pending to larger example size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Andrographis, the Renoprotective Herbal Remedy
Scientists may have found a natural remedy for the prevention and treatment of chronic kidney disease with no side effects, according to studies.
The renoprotective effect is protection against anything that can cause harm to the kidney.
Chronic kidney disease, also known as chronic kidney failure, is a condition of a gradual loss of kidney function.
According to the observation of patients data associated with the diseases, diabetes and high blood pressure are responsible for up to two-thirds of the cases.
Diabetes is a medical condition caused by long-term abnormally high blood glucose, leading to the damage of other tissue and organs, including the kidneys.
According to the statistic, approximately, 30 million American adults have chronic kidney disease, and a large percentage of these people aren't aware of it. 1 in 3 American adults is at risk for kidney disease.
Another cause of chronic kidney disease is kidney disease. Early diagnosis of chronic kidney disease can often keep chronic kidney disease from getting worse.
Late diagnosis of chronic kidney disease may eventually lead to kidney failure, leading to dialysis or a kidney transplant to maintain life.
Some researchers suggested that improving the diet in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) can make a major difference in the pathogenesis of the disease.
Dr. Chaudhary Muhammad Junaid Nazar at the Royal Gwent Hospital in the study diet and chronic kidney disease said, " During the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD), the requirements and utilization of different nutrients change significantly" and "Understanding the applicable nutritional principles and the available methods for improving the nutritional status of these patients is important".
These results clearly suggested by improving diet may be necessary to delay the complete kidney failure and maintain kidney function.
For patients on dialysis, diet keeps the levels of electrolytes, minerals, and fluid in the body balanced.
Andrographis paniculata is also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka.
It has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic doe the treatment of the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia, swollen lymph nodes, leprosy, bronchitis, sore throats, tuberculosis, chickenpox, etc.
Besides the main ingredient andrographolides, giving the plant a bitter taste, other ingredients of herbal Andrographis include diterpene lactones, such as neoandrographolide, andrographiside, 14-doexy-11, 12-didehydro andrographolide, etc., flavonoinds viz., oroxylin, wogonin, andrographidines A, B, C, D, E, F.
With an aim to find a natural compound or whole herb for the treatment of reno disease with no side effects, researchers examined the anti-renal failure activity of A. paniculata.
The study included male Wistar albino rats divided into three groups: normal control, gentamicin control, and an aqueous extract of A. paniculata (200 mg/kg, per oral (p.o.))-treated.
The nephrotoxic model was induced by gentamicin (80 mg/kg, intraperitoneal (i.p.)).
After 10 days, according to the blood sample, aqueous extract of A. paniculata attenuated the gentamicin-induced increase in serum creatinine, serum urea, and blood urea nitrogen levels by 176.92%, 106.27%, and 202.90%, respectively. in a gentamicin-induced nephrotoxic animal model.
These results strongly suggested that the aqueous extract (whole plant) of A. paniculata (Burm. f.) Nees exhibits a significant renoprotective effect against the gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in male Wistar albino rats.
Additionally, in the comparison the renal protective effects on medical plants, researchers investigated various herbal adaptogens such as shade-dried powders of Withania somnifera, Ocimum sanctum, Asperagus recemosus, Andrographis paniculata, Asphaltum panjabinum (Shilajith), Gymnema Sylvestre, Spirulina platensis, and Panax ginseng on cadmium (Cd)-induced oxidative stress and its accumulation in broiler chicken
A total of 80 male broiler chicks of day-old age were randomly assigned to 10 equal groups. Group 1 birds were fed with basal diet throughout the experiment (1-42 days). Group 2-10 chicks were fed with a basal diet containing cadmium at 100 ppm from day 1 to day 28 (4 weeks). From 29(th) to 42(nd) day (2 weeks), basal diet alone was fed to group 2 chicks which acted as toxic control and group 3-10 birds were fed with feed containing 0.1% powder of W. somnifera, O. sanctum, Aspe. recemosus, An. paniculata, Asph. panjabinum (Shilajith), G. Sylvestre, S. platensis, and P. ginseng, respectively.
The highest concentration of cadmium was found accumulated in the kidney, in birds of group 2.
The oxidation induced the increase of thiobarbituric acid reacting substances (TBARS), and the decrease of antioxidant enzymes GSH concentrations of liver and kidney tissues in cadmium intoxicated birds were significantly reversed by the above-said herbs.
Herbal supplementation in groups 3-10 prevented Cd bioaccumulation which was most evident in the liver, followed by the kidney.
In other words, herbal Andrographis exerted a liver and kidney protective effects comparable to that of herbal medicines in the group 3, namely W. somnifera, O. sanctum, Aspe. recemosus, An. paniculata, Asph. panjabinum (Shilajith), G. Sylvestre, S. platensis, and P. ginseng, respectively.
Dr. Bharavi K, the lead scientist said in the report, "Administration of herbal adaptogens at the rate of 0.1% in feed significantly prevented the bioaccumulation of Cd and reversed the Cd-induced oxidative tissue damage".
Taken altogether, herbal Andrographis may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention of kidney damage caused by oxidative stress and reno failure and combined with the primary therapy for the treatment of kidney diseases with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.
However, intake of the herbal medicine should be prescribed by the specialists in the related field as acute kidney damage has been reported in a number of cases

Herbal Anise as Anti-Convulsant in Reduced risk, Frequency Attacks and Treatment of Seizures
Anise may be used as an anticonvulsant with potential and substantial effect in the prevention and treatment of seizures, some scientists suggested.
Anise is a flowering plant of the species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belonging to the family Apiaceae native to Egypt and the Mediterranean region, used in traditional herbal medicine as a fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners and stomachic, anti-septic, anti-spasmodic,...
Chemical constituents
Anethole, D-pinene, I-phellandrene, Alpha-terpineol, Safrol, Methyl chavicol, Resin, Shikimic acid, etc.
Anticonvulsant is a function to control seizures (convulsions) or stop an ongoing series of seizures.
According to the study of the Shaheed Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, in the investigation of essential oil isolated from the fruits of Pimpinella anisum (Umbelliferae), a folkloric remedy in the Iranian traditional medicine against seizures, application of the essential oil on seizures male mice induced by pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) or maximal electroshock (MES) suppressed the pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) or maximal electroshock (MES) expression in stimulated a significant increase in blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) signal activity in the anterior thalamus, retrosplenial cortex, and dentate gyrus of the brain.
However, application of Anise also induced clonic convulsions which were found to last mere seconds, or continue for several minutes and motor impairment in other doses not used for the treatment of seizures.
The information suggested that Anise in a specific dose may have a profound effect in reduced risk of seizure but the exact amount intake should only be prescribed by an herbal specialist in the prevention of clonic convulsions and motor impairment.
Further analysis of the effect of the essential oil is prevented and treatment of seizure attacks, researchers conducted a study using different concentrations of anise oil rat model induced seizure by injection of pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) and neuronal hypoxia induced by oxygen withdrawal on production of dark neurons and induction of long-term potentiation (LTP) and indicated that
injection of Anise oil exhibited protection of the brain neuron by inhibiting the production of dark neurons which were found to associated to increased seizure attacks frequency, thus prolonging the period between seizure attacks and reducing the amplitude and duration of epileptiform burst discharges due to neuron abnormal excitability induced by injection of intraperitoneal PTZ
Interestingly, application of anise oil also demonstrated a significant inhibited the depolarization, glutamate release caused by toxicity of pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) to induce neuron collapsed in different regions of the brain in epileptic rats.
Moreover, the application of Anise essential oil also significantly enhanced the biotic or biotic factor that affects either oxygen supply (cardiorespiratory capacity) or oxygen demand (metabolic rate) through the expression of anoxic terminal negativity in the CA1 region of hippocampal slices in initiated neuroprotective effect.
Amazingly, the administration also demonstrated a direct stabilization of the cell membrane after the acute onset of hypoxia and ischemia caused by oxygen withdrawal and inhibited the induction of long-term potentiation (LTP).
Dr. Karimzadeh F, the lead author, after taking into account other confounders said, "the anticonvulsant and neuroprotective effects of anise oil, likely via inhibition of synaptic plasticity".
Taken together, Anise essential oil may be considered as an adjunct therapy to reduce the risk and frequency of seizures attacks and used the combination with conventional medicine for treatment of seizures.

Herbal Aloe Vera Improves the Function of Immune System with No Side Effects
Scientists may have found a natural ingredient for the enhancement of the immune system with no side effects, according to studies.
The immune system is the set of cells associated with the activity against antigens or infectious agents.
It is one of the body's defense system against diseases.
The immune system does a great job of keeping people healthy and preventing infections.
Immune dysfunction is a chronic condition, depending on the parts of the immune system affected.
There are 2 types of immune dysfunction. The underactive immune system is also known as weakened immune system People with the underactive immune system are susceptible to infection, recurrent infections, autoimmune disorders, damage to heart, lungs, nervous system or digestive tract, increased risk of cancer, malnutrition, and death from serious infection.
On the other hand, the active immune system is also known as autoimmune diseases. In this case, patients who suffer diseases associated with the immune system attack the body tissue.
Immunomodulation is a process in which an immune response is altered to the desired level. In other words, under the immunomodulatory effect, the immune system is responding correctly to the desire of the body, regardless of types of immune dysfunction.
Dr. Jeffrey A. Bluestone, the lead scientist in the study "Current and Future Immunomodulation Strategies to Restore Tolerance in Autoimmune Diseases" wrote, "Considerable progress has been made in the immunomodulation of autoimmune diseases and the understanding of the complex molecular and cellular pathways targeted by novel treatments".
And "... a number of immunotherapies have become the standard of care and greatly improved the clinical outcome and quality of life of patients with some autoimmune diseases".
These results strongly suggested that immunomodulation can be used for the prevention and treatment of under and overactive immune function.
Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan.
The herbal plant has become very popular for commercial cultivation due to its health benefits. Aloe vera has been used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of disease, including wound, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes, and elevated cholesterol, etc. It is also one of many popular herbs studied in scientific ways with some conflicting results.
The ten main areas of chemical constituents of Aloe vera include amino acids, anthraquinones, enzymes, minerals, vitamins, lignins, monosaccharide, polysaccharides, salicylic acid, saponins, and sterols.
They all work together in a synergistic way to create healing and health-giving benefits, according to Gertrude Baldwin in the article of THE BENEFITS OF THE USE OF ALOE VERA IN HERBAL PREPARATIONS.
With an aim to find the pharmacological potential of Aloe arborescens Miller leaf components against the immune dysfunction, researchers examined the immune-modulatory effects on the Sparus aurata fibroblast cell line SAF-1.
According to the application of Aloe extract at different concentrations (1.2-4.8 mg ml(-1)) for various times (24-72 h) for the treatment of the cells, the lowest concentration did not provoke any cellular damage observable by SEM and did not affect ATP amounts after 24 and 48 h, while even induced a significant increase over controls after 72 h.
However, the Aloe extract at a concentration of 1.2 mg ml(-1)) exerted a powerful immune stimulation in exhibiting an effect on interconnected genes in the SAF-1 cells involved in different aspects of the immune responses.
Researchers at the end of the experiment wrote, "A. arborescens to prevent or oppose bacterial and viral fish diseases and to face, as an alternative strategy based on natural plant extracts, the growing unwillingness to rely upon standard solutions involving antibiotics or antimicrobial chemicals".
Further, the investigation of the effect of an aloe polymannose multi-nutrient complex (APMC) formula on cognitive and immune functioning over 12 months among adults diagnosed with AD.
The participants were given to 4 teaspoons of the formula per day. The results were assessed at baseline and 12 months.
The formula demonstrated a significantly improved at 9 and 12 months compared to baseline, and 46% of our sample showed clinically-significant improvement (≥4-point change) from baseline to 12 months, according to the mean ADAS-cog cognition score.
Participants showed a significant decrease in protein associated with immune response in the activation of proinflammatory cytokines with few, temporary adverse reactions.
In other words, the formula displayed strong immune-modulatory effects in regulating the immune responses on patients with AD.
Taken altogether, herbal Aloe vera may be considered a functional remedy in regulation and adjustment of the immune system against stimuli, including allergens, infectious pathogens with no side effect.

Bilberry, The Kidney Protective Functional Remedy, Scientists Say
Scientists may have found a single herb for the treatment of kidney diseases without side effects, according to studies.
Kidneys are 2 bean shape organs found in the left and right side in the retroperitoneal space in the body.
The function of kidneys is to filter blood and control fluids. They are the second detoxed organs besides the liver and skin.
Due to millions of tiny filters called nephrons in each kidney, people may not experience any kidney dysfunction symptoms at an early stage.
Kidney diseases are a class of medical conditions associated with reduced function of the kidney, in cases, complete loss of kidney function such as kidney failure.
Believe it or not, in the US, the leading causes of kidney failure and the end stage of chronic kidney diseases are diabetes and high blood pressure.
Some researchers suggested that if the 2 causable-conditions are under control, kidney failure and the end stage of chronic kidney diseases may be prevented or delayed.
According to the statistics, in the US, over 660,000 Americans have kidney failure, affecting 14% of the general population.
Dr. Hariharan D, the lead scientists in the concern of the negative impact of the Western diet on the risk of chronic kidney disease wrote, "Characteristics of the Western diet that fueled the obesity epidemic may also impact kidney disease incidence and progression".
And, "While dietary patterns high in fresh fruits and vegetables and low in red meats, such as the Mediterranean diet, decrease the risk of chronic diseases, the Western diet, characterized by high intake of red meat, animal fat, sweets, and desserts and low intake of fresh fruits and vegetables and low-fat dairy products, increases risk of chronic diseases".
The findings strongly suggested that increased intake of fruits and vegetables and reduced intake of saturated and trans fat, processed food are the best ways to prevent the onset of kidney diseases.
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The herbal plant has been used as foods and herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
Researchers in finding a natural compound with kidney protective activity examined the bilberry ( Vaccinium myrtillus L.) extract anti kidney damage in an animal model.
In potassium bromate (KBrO3) induced kidney damage by observed through the increased levels of serum blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine levels, 5 day oral administration of bilberry ( Vaccinium myrtillus L.) extract at 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg exerted a significant kidney protective activity by restoring the normal levels of reversal in serum BUN and creatinine.
Furthermore, the injection of bilberry extract reduced the oxidative stress marker in the kidney and the levels of free radicals in the host body by improving the oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) in kidney tissues.
The results strongly supported the kidney protective effect of bilberry extract by reducing the degree of oxidative stress and kidney damage induced by KBrO3.
Dr. Bao L and colleagues wrote in the final report, "The protective effect of bilberry extract is attributed to its free radical scavenging activity and lipid peroxidation inhibitory effect".
In order to reveal more information about bilberry antioxidant activity, researchers observed the kidney protective effect on the bilberry diet in a rat model of nephrotoxicity.
Selected rats were divided into 4 groups: control, treated with only gentamicin, treated with the only bilberry, and treated with both gentamicin and bilberry.
Injection of the bilberry diet group (100 mg/kg daily) showed a strong nephroprotective effect against gentamicin toxicity in rats by inhibiting the oxidative stress marker and improving the production of antioxidants.
Additional differentiation of the bilberry antioxidant activity, researchers found that the protective activity of bilberry extract against kidney damage is attributed to antioxidant via its polyphenolic content, particularly the anthocyanin levels.
Taken altogether, bilberry processed high amount bioactive compounds may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of kidney damage, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.
