Herbal Cinnamon, The Natural Alternative for Treatment of Infertility

Scientists may have found a kitchen spice that processes some underline mechanisms in enhancing the rate of fertility, some studies suggested.

Infertility is a condition characterized by the inability of a couple to conceive after 12 months of unprotected sexual intercourse or the cannot carry the pregnancy full term.

The syndrome affects over 5 million couples alone in the US. Because of the unawareness of treatments, only 10% seek help from professionals.

According to the statistic, about 35% of infertility is caused by the male's inability to fertilize. 35% is caused by the female's inability to conceive, 10% attributes to both, and 10 % is considered a failure with an unknown cause.

Dr, Romero Ramos R, in the study [Risk factors associated to female infertility], wrote, "There were 6 factors with statistical significance: advanced age (p < 0.001), elevated body mass index (p < 0.001), age of onset of sexual activity (p < 0.001), prior pelvic surgeries (p < 0.001), and presence of stress (p < 0.001). Other risk factors such as smoking, chemical, and radiological treatments, pelvic inflammatory disease, exercise, contraceptive use, alcohol intake, drugs, coffee, solvents, glue, and insecticides, were not significant".

In male infertility, according to a case-control study conducted by Dr. Buiatti E and colleagues, about coffee and alcohol consumption, smoking habits, x-ray exposure, usual sitting posture, drug consumption, other nonoccupational risk factors, socioeconomic status, education level, and occupational history are some of prevalent risk factors associated to male infertility.

And, the high relative risk was associated with (a) occupation in the radioelectric industry, (b) nonsedentary clerical workers, (c) clerical work in the typographic industry, and (d) occupation in the textile industry,

Cinnamon, a kitchen spice in many cultures, may be best known for its effectiveness in reducing the levels of blood glucose in diabetics and lipid peroxidation through its antioxidant activity(4).

In a total of 45 women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, randomized, 26 women completed 3 months of the study, and 17 women completed the entire 6 months of the study, researchers showed,
* Application of cinnamon exerts a positive effect in the improvement of menstrual cyclicity associated with luteal phase progesterone levels and ovulatory menses without altering insulin resistance or serum androgen levels

* Cinnamaldehyde, a major chemical compound of cinnamon enhances fertility through selectively induced progesterone production and inhibits the production of testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone in human adrenal cells.

* Further differentiation, suggested that cinnamon extract not only reduces insulin resistance in vitro and in vivo by increasing phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase activity with insulin stimulation in the insulin signaling pathway but also improves menstrual cyclicity in female induced PCOs.

Moreover, in the infertile male rat study conducted by Fırat University, long-term cinnamon bark oil(CPO) improved the effect on testicular oxidant-antioxidant balance and sperm quality with significantly decreasing the abnormal sperm rate and apoptotic germ cell count.

Interestingly, in the study to investigate the likelihood of detrimental effects of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4 ) on the male reproductive system through oxidative stress mechanism and also protective effects of cinnamon bark oil (CBO), researchers at the Firat University conducted an experiment including 28 healthy male Wistar rats.

The tested subjects were divided into four groups, seven rats in each. Group 1 received only olive oil daily; group 2 was treated with 100 mg kg(-1) CBO daily; group 3 was treated with only 0.25 ml kg(-1) CCl4 weekly, and group 4 received weekly CCl4 + daily CBO.

All administrations were made by the intragastric catheter and maintained for 10 weeks.

At the final report, researchers suggested that
* CCl4 administration caused significant decreases in body and reproductive organ weights, testicular catalase (CAT) activity, sperm motility and concentration, and significant increases in lipid peroxidation (LPO) level, abnormal sperm rate and apoptotic index along with some histopathological damages compared with the control group.

* Pretreatment of CBO following the administration of CCl4 significant improvements in absolute weights of testis and epididymis, all sperm quality parameters, LPO level, apoptotic index, and testicular histopathological structure Cl4, compared to the group given CCl4 only.

Taken altogether, Cinnamon may be effective in promoting fertility in both sexes through enhancing the menstrual cycle in women and improving sperm performance in men.

Free radicals are atoms, molecules, or ions with unpaired electrons through chemical bonds with other atoms or molecules during a chemical reaction. They may have positive, negative or zero charges. The unpaired electrons cause radicals to be highly chemically reactive in the human body, leading to aging and cancers.
The comparison of commercial essential oils (EO) containing Citrus aurantium, C. limon, Cupressus sempervirens, Eucalyptus globulus, Foeniculum vulgare, and Thymus vulgaris showed that F. vulgare EOs is effective against lipid peroxidation(3). In support of the above, the University of Wyoming suggested that Fennel oils might have a higher antioxidant capacity in distillation time (DT) depend-manner. DT can be used to obtain fennel essential oil with a differential composition(4).
Some researchers suggested that the potent antioxidant properties of medicinal plants may depend on variety conditions such as environmental conditions, climatic and seasonal variations, geographical regions of growth, degree of ripeness, growing practices, and many other factors such as postharvest treatment and processing(5).

Tumeric's Curcumin on Non alcoholic Fatty liver disease (NAFLD)

Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease is defined as a condition of fatty liver diseases as a result of accumulated of fat in the liver, not caused by abusive alcohol consumption.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia. The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.. Curcumin is one of the natural phenols in the plant.

Turmeric has long been used in herbal medicine in treating diseases and today its curcuminoid, curcumin has attracted many interests from researchers in many parts of the world. Curcumin, as an antihyperlipidemic agent, has been found to lower the "bad cholesterol" low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and increase high-density lipoprotein (HDL) of which reduce the risk of fat accumulated in the tissues in the liver. Excessive fat deposited in hepatocytes may cause metabolic imbalances, causing Non- alcoholic fatty liver diseases. In the support of the above, the water-soluble curcumin derivative was tested for its efficacy against steatohepatitis which is an inflammation of the liver with concurrent fat accumulation in the liver, the derivative not only significantly alleviated fibrosis but also decreased the grade of liver steatosis.

Green Tea, a Functional Food in Attenuated Risk and Treatment of Autoimmune Diseases

Green tea bioactive Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) may have a therapeutic and profound effect in attenuated risk and treatment of autoimmune diseases, some scientists postulated.

Green tea, a precious drink processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine or food, long term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, induced "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weaken immunity and painful case of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory.

Autoimmune diseases are a class of diseases characterized by the immune system in attacking its own tissues.

Green tea bioactive compound Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) in the risk of autoimmune diseases was found to associate with many different mechanisms involved a number of aspects.

In interleukin-1 receptor antagonist knockout (IL-1raKO) arthritis rodent models of human rheumatoid arthritis, intraperitoneal injection of EGCG three times per week after the first immunization showed a significant reduction of arthritis index observed by decreased damage and destruction of joint tissues.

The efficacy of green tea phytochemicals in inhibited arthritis expression was attributed to the activities in reduced production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the accumulation of inflammatory cells into the synovium for joint destruction and oxidative stress proteins in facilitated inflammation and destruction of the joints in arthritis.

Furthermore, the extract also exhibited anti STAT3 expression in a mediated variety of genes in response to cell stimuli to induce cellular processes such as cell growth and division, cell movement, and apoptosis activated by cytokine-dependent inflammation, through phosphorylation-Stat3 Antibody (y705) and (S727)in shortening the duration of STAT3 activity.
Interestingly, the additional analysis also found that application of green tea bioactive compound lowers the mediation effect of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) function in limited production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) in the regulation of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) function in the activated pro-inflammatory expression in innate immunity.

Moreover, injection of EGCG also exhibited anti-osteoclastic activity observed by reduced osteoclast markers in EGCG-treated IL-1RaKO mice.

In mice induced Sjögren's syndrome with pathogenic effects of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the salivary glands, administration of green tea Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), was found to reduce overexpression of ROS in precipitated oxidative stress-induced DNA damage and apoptosis in MRL-Fas(lpr) mice with autoimmune sialadenitis through Heme oxygenase(HO)-1 in response to pro antioxidant expression and Bcl-2 with function to induce cell survival.

Additionally, in the investigation of the ameliorated effects of green tea in risk of autoimmune sialadenitis in a murine model, application of the green tea extract chemical compound decreased the severity of sialadenitis substantially through reduced expressions of Thymine glycol (5,6-dihydroxy-5,6-dihydrothymine) with function in induced DNA damage by oxidation and ionizing radiation andgp91phox subunit of NADPH oxidase in the production of ROS to react to the acute phase of infection.

Further differentiation indicated that the chemical constituents also ameliorated single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) function in DNA duplication in both viruses and organisms and cleaved caspase 3 activity in the mediation of programmed cell death and TP53 or tumor protein in regulated apoptosis mediated by expression of BAX.

More profoundly, in the examine duct epithelial cells of salivary glands, EGCG-treated mice showed decreased levels of SS-A/Ro, an extractable nuclear antigen (ENA) and Sjögren syndrome antigen B or Lupus La protein (SSB/La) associated with autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and Sjögren's syndrome (SS).

Finally, green tea EGCG-treated mice also showed a lower Ifi202b interferon activated gene 202B expression in implicated the development of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and Ifi202 overexpression in the kidney and immune organs, an indication of significantly increased disease progression in autoimmune glomerulonephritis, according to publication of Gene ID: 26388, updated on 5-Nov-2017.

Taken together, green tea processed abundantly bioactive phytochemicals may be considered as a functional food in reduced risk and treatment of autoimmune diseases. Intake of green tea extract should be taken with care as overdose-toxicity has been reported in numbers of incidence.

Cranberry, the Natural Anti Colon Cancer Remedy in Vivo

The colon formed part of the digestive tract including the large intestine with a function to reabsorb fluids and process and secret waste products from the body.

Colon cancer is a medical and chronic condition characterized by irregular growth of cells in the colon, due to the alternation of cell DNA.

According to the statistic provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, approximately, 101,420 new cases of colon cancer will be diagnosed. Colon cancer also causes the death of 51,020 deaths. during 2019.

The lifetime risk associated with the onset of colorectal cancer is 1 in 22 (4.49%) for men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) for women.

Most cases of colon cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the organs tissues, before forming a tumor by penetrating into the deeper layers of the affected organ.

At the advanced stage, after growing larger in size, most primary colonic cancer cells can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissues and organs, leading to secondary spreading.

Colon cancer is one most slow-growing cancer compared to other cancers. In some patients, colon cancer may exist in the colon more than 20 years before it is discovered. Therefore, only 39% of colon cancer is diagnosed in the early stage, which orchestrates more incidences of death compared to other cancers.

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States.

The median age diagnosed with colon cancer is 68 in men and 72 in women compared to the age of 63 of rectal cancer in both men and women.

Most cases of colon cancer are adenocarcinomas, originated in epithelium tissues, that line the colon.
Out of many risk factors involved in the onset of colorectal cancer, an unhealthy diet with a higher in saturate and trans fat, red meats, and processed foods and fewer with fruits and vegetables is one of the major culprits that cause the onset of the disease, according to the epidemiological studies.

Dr. Robb Bird, the editor at the worldwide health wrote, "Poor diet is associated with about 80 percent of colorectal cancer cases".

And "These cancers are a result of a combination of several causes including genetic, epigenetic and environmental causes, such as diet. Hopefully, with more research, the exact pathways by which diet leads to cancer can be discovered".

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the protective effects of whole cranberry powder (WCP) on colitis-associated colon tumorigenesis in an animal model.

In mouse colon tumorigenesis induced by azoxymethane (AOM) and dextran sulfate sodium (DSS), dietary administration of WCP (1.5%, w/w in the diet) significantly suppressed the colon tumorigenesis by inhibiting the cancer progression and proliferation.

Furthermore, WCP injection was found to shrink the average tumor size in mice compared to the positive control mice.

Genes and proteins elevated expression levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines associated with the initiation of colon cancer such as IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α in the colon of AOM/DSS-treated mice were markedly attenuated by the administration of WCP.

Moreover, WCP not only modulates multiple signaling pathways/proteins related to inflammation, cell proliferation, apoptosis against the colon cancer but also blocked the activity of angiogenesis, and metastasis.

Based on the finding, researchers wrote, "Overall, the results demonstrate chemopreventive effects of WCP on colon tumorigenesis in mice, providing a scientific basis for using the whole cranberry as a functional food to promote colon health in humans".

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of colon cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Turmeric, the Natural Remedy for the Treatment of Metabolic Syndrome (MS)

Scientists may have found a natural herbal remedy for the treatment of metabolic syndrome with no side effects, according to studies.

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes including too much fat around the waist, high blood sugar and cholesterol and pressure, high triglycerides and low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol.

If you have any 3 of the aforementioned conditions, you are at a higher risk of having CVD and diabetes.

The exact causes of metabolic syndrome are unidentified. However, researchers suggested eating too many calories, particularly in a high-fat diet, physical inactivity, and excessive weight gain are some of the most common and prevalent factors in elevated the risk of metabolic syndrome in the Western world.

Most people with metabolic syndrome do not experience any symptoms until the condition progression into a later stage, overtimes, leading to insulin resistance and plagues built-up on the wall of the arteries.

Other risk factors that increased the risk of metabolic syndrome include aging, race, family history, long-term hormone imbalance such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), gestational diabetes.

Some researchers in the concern about the widespread metabolic syndrome in obese patients suggested that the promotion of the Western diet over the past many decades may be one of the culprits in inducing the onset of metabolic syndrome.

Dr. the lead scientist in the cardiovascular disease team said, "The cellular mechanisms of metabolic syndrome include mitochondrial overload, de novo lipogenesis, hepatic insulin resistance, and hyperinsulinemia, reactive oxygen species formation, endoplasmic reticulum stress, and the unfolded protein response"

And, "Specific alterations of the Western Diet uniquely drive this process and are unrelated to calories. These alterations include too little fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, and micronutrients, and too many omega-6 fatty acids, trans-fats, branched-chain amino acids, ethanol, and fructose. The food industry invokes personal responsibility while denying any corporate responsibility and citing scientific, policy, and social arguments. However, their responses obfuscate the scientific truth in order to obviate their culpability".

The findings suggested that obesity is a marker of the metabolic syndrome rather than a cause, However, if you are obese, your risk of metabolic syndrome increases substantially.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
In the urgency to find a natural remedy for the treatment of metabolic syndrome, researchers compared the clinical efficacy of black seeds and turmeric alone and its co-administration in lower doses among patients with metabolic syndrome (MS).

The double-blind-randomized-controlled trial included healthy males (n=250), who screened positive for MS, were randomized to either black seeds (1.5g/day), turmeric (2.4g/day), its combination (900mg black seeds and 1.5g turmeric/day) or placebo for 8 weeks.
At 4 weeks, compared to baseline, turmeric alone significantly improved a number of certain conditions of metabolic syndrome such as body-mass-index (BMI), body-fat-percent (BF%), waist circumference (WC).

Combined with black seeds, turmeric improved all parameters except HDL-cholesterol with lower fasting blood glucose (FBG) and LDL-cholesterol, compared to placebo.

At the 8 weeks, turmeric reduced LDL-cholesterol and c-reactive protein (CRP), a marker of inflammation, and the combination group with 60% dose of the individual herbs showed an improvement in all parameters compared to baseline.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The combination of Black seeds and Turmeric can, therefore, be recommended with lifestyle modification as a starting point for patients with MetS to halt its future complications and progression".

In order to confirm the efficacy of black seeds used combined with turmeric for the treatment of metabolic syndrome, researchers once against conducted a joint study using a fructose-fed rat model of MS.

in vivo, different doses of black seeds and turmeric, individually and in combination, were administered to fructose-fed rats for up to 6 weeks with characteristic features of MS.

At 3 weeks of the treatment, turmeric lowered low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, compared to coadministration which reduced both high blood pressure and hypertriglyceridemia.

At 6 weeks, the coadministration of both herbs, at half the doses of individual herbs, was the most effective in preventing hypertension, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, hyperinsulinemia, and endothelial dysfunction compared to those of individual herbs.

The results strongly suggested that turmeric used alone or combined with black seeds may be considered a functional food or formula for the prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome by inhibiting the conditions in the cluster of the MS, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Aloe Vera, the Natural Whole Food Medicine for Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis

Aloe Vera may have potential efficacy in reduced risk and treatment of Ulcerative colitis.

Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan. It has become very popular for commercial cultivation due to its health benefits. Aloe Vera has been used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of diseases, including wound, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes, and elevated cholesterol, etc.
Constipation is a condition in difficulty in emptying the bowels, in the most case associated with hardened feces.

Ulcerative colitis is a condition of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) inducing long-lasting inflammation and ulcers in the digestive tract.

In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of 44 hospital out-patients with ulcerative colitis randomly given oral aloe vera gel or placebo, 100 mL twice daily for 4 weeks, the oral administrated group showed an improvement and response occurred in nine (30%), viewed in the Simple Clinical Colitis Activity Index and histological scores.

Dr. Langmead, the lead researcher said, "Oral aloe vera taken for 4 weeks produced a clinical response more often than placebo; it also reduced the histological disease activity and appeared to be safe".

Furthermore, in the study of male Sprague Dawley rats fed experimental diets for 2 weeks before and during the induction of colitis, dietary aloe vera gel significantly ameliorated intestinal inflammatory responses in a dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) induced ulcerative colitis.

In fact, the efficacy is also found to associate with the abundant bioactivity of the herbs.

Other researchers suggested that the anti ulcerative colitis activity of aloe vera gel may be due to the healing properties of antioxidants, scavengers, chelators as well as strongly inhibited Inflammation, electrical/mechanical impairment in the gut, and a great majority of oxidative stress.

Taking all together, herbal aloe vera may process anti ulcerative colitis properties, through the expression of bioactivity in induced production of antioxidant in reduced intestinal inflammatory responses. but further study is necessary to confirm its claim.
