Bowel problems may be a condition associated with some underlying diseases or syndrome including bowel incontinence, IBS, Colitis, Crohns, constipation or other bowel conditions.
Bowel problems can be cured if the causes of the problem is found.
A most common syndrome that does not associate with the underlying disease is constipation, a condition that affects the bowel movements.
According to the statistics in the US, constipation affects approximately 2% of the population and the condition is more common in women than men.
Patients with constipation may experience symptoms of abdominal pain, bloating, and feeling of not completely passed the bowel movement.
Chronic constipation is one of the common causes of hemorrhoids, anal fissure or fecal impaction.
Conventionally, constipation in most cases is treated by the use of a laxative. However long-term use laxatives may induce diarrhea, intestinal obstruction, particularly unbalanced levels of salts and minerals in your body.
Therefore, if you currently use one of the over-counter laxatives for the treatment of constipation, please make you know all the side effects for preventive measures.
Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.
The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.
On finding a natural compound with bowel health promotion activity, researchers compared the effects of probiotic-enriched artichokes on the treatment of the symptom profile and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production in constipated subjects with ordinary artichokes.
20 chronic constipated participants including 3 males and 17 female have selected to a double-blind method and a computer-generated randomization list.
Each patient consumed 180 g per day of ordinary artichokes or artichokes enriched with Lactobacillus paracasei IMPC 2.1 for 15 days.
According to the returned questionnaires, 80% of patients preferred probiotic-enriched artichokes compared to ordinary ones.
The satisfactory relief of symptoms was significantly higher in the probiotic-enriched artichoke compared to ordinary ones.
According to the Bristol stool scale in the measurement of fecal retention was lower in the probiotic-enriched artichokes compared to higher in the artichoke group seconded to the control.
GSRS (Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale) of constipation was significantly lower in the probiotic group compared with the baseline.
Furthermore, the short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production and propionic acid were significantly higher in the probiotic group compared with the baseline.
In order to reveal more information artichoke in the promotion of bowel health, researchers investigated the chemical compounds inulin and oligofructose, a class of fructans found in the Jerusalem artichoke.
Injection of inulin and oligofructose were found to stimulate the immune system of the body, decrease the pathogenic bacteria in the intestine, relieve constipation.
Furthermore, inulin and oligofructose also displayed significant effects in the promotion of bowel health by protecting the colin against colon cancer.
Taken altogether, artichoke, particularly Jerusalem artichoke alone or combined with probiotics may be considered functional remedies for the improvement of bowel health, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bromelain Suppresses Osteoarthritis (OA) Similar to Those of Diclofenac with No Side Effects
Osteoarthritis (OA), a form of arthritis, is a condition associated with aging-induced wear and tear on a joint or joints.
Tne condition is very common in older adults, affecting over 25 million people in the US with no sign of stopping.
According to the University of Porto Medical School, the differences in prevalence and incidence estimates of osteoarthritis (OA), according to the case definition, are in the knee, hip and hand joints(3).
The characteristics of osteoarthritis are aching pain(5), stiffness(6), or difficulty of moving the joint or joints(7). The pain usually gets worse in a change of weather, at night.
In the advanced diseases, the pain can occur even at rest(8).
Today management of osteoarthritis (OA) focuses on pain relief and improved physical function through pharmacological, nonpharmacological, and surgical treatments(4).
Some researchers suggested that OA is not simply a disease related to aging or mechanical stress of joints but rather a “metabolic disorder(70)(71)” interrelated to lipid, metabolic, and humoral mediators(70).
Indeed, OA has been linked not only to obesity(46)(47) but also to other cardiovascular risk factors(72)(73), namely, diabetes(74), dyslipidemia, hypertension, and insulin resistance(75).
More precisely, the majority of patients with OA also suffer from one or more of below conditions
* Hypertension
According to the University Health Network Research Institute, the economic burden incurred by RA significantly exceeds that related to OA and HBP(76)(77).
* Cardiovascular disease
According to Erasmus University Medical Centre, there is an association of atherosclerosis with osteoarthritis of the knee and hand joints in women(72)(73)(78).
*Peripheral vascular disease
According to Himchan Hospital, patients with due to osteoarthritis are associated with risk of asymptomatic peripheral vascular disease(80). The average vessel wall thickness of the popliteal artery was 1.09 mm in patients with generalized OA, and 0.96 mm in the matched normal reference population(79).
* Congestive heart failure
Hypertension, diabetes, and older age have shown to increased risk of Congestive heart failure modestly(81).
* Renal function impairment
According to the Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust, pain pharmacotherapies such as osteoarthritis (OA) or mixed OA and rheumatoid arthritis may increase the risk of adverse events in patients with concurrent cardiovascular (CV) or renal disease(83).
6. Diabetes
Several epidemiological and experimental data support the hypothesis that diabetes could be an independent risk factor for osteoarthritis (OA)(76)(85).
* Respiratory disease
People with respiratory disease are also at a higher risk to develop osteoarthritis (OA), including chronic cough and bilateral infiltrates on chest roentgenogram(86).
* High serum of cholesterol
There is an association between high serum cholesterol levels and both knee and generalized OA, according to the study of 113 females and 133 males with average ages 46 14.2 and 51.54 16.0 years by King Khalid University Hospital(87).
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
On finding a natural compound from healthy food for the treatment of inflammatory diseases, researchers examined the effects of bromelain on patients with osteoarthritis of the knee.
The randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled trial included 47 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of moderate to severe knee OA randomized to 12 weeks of bromelain 800 mg/day or placebo, with a 4-week follow-up.
According to the results from 31 patients who completed the trial, including 14 in the bromelain group and 17 in the placebo group, both treatment groups showed clinically relevant improvement in the WOMAC disability subscale only with a mild adverse outcome.
In order to reveal and confirm the effects of bromelain on OA, a joint a randomized, single-blind, active-controlled pilot study. led by the Mahidol University was conducted in patients with OA for 16 weeks.
40 knee OA patients enrolled in the study were randomized to receive oral bromelain (500 mg/day) or diclofenac (100 mg/day).
According to the tested assays,
* At week 4, the improvement of total WOMAC and pain subscales from baseline was observed in both groups, however, two patients in the diclofenac treatment group showed adverse effects that lead to discontinuation of diclofenac.
* At week 16, bromelain treatment group showed a significant improvement of all aspects, including total WOMAC scores (12.2 versus 25.5), pain subscales (2.4 versus 5.6), stiffness subscales (0.8 versus 2.0), and function subscales (9.1 versus 17.9), and physical component of SF-36 (73.3 versus 65.4), compared to baseline values.
* Also compared to the based line, the bromelain-treated group also showed a decrease of plasma MDA and LPS-stimulated PGE2 production,
* Bromelain exerted a similar effect to those of diclofenac after 4 weeks.
Taken altogether, bromelain used alone may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of osteoarthritis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Artichoke Health Benefit
Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.
The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine for as liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.
Fructooligosaccharides (FOS), are oligosaccharide, a molecule made up of a small group of these sugar,
Due to its nature as a natural source of sugar and low in calories, FOS may be used as an alternative sweetener as intake of FOS does not cause a spike in blood sugar.
FOS are considered prebiotics. Intake of FOS can increase the levels of good bacteria in the intestine, leading to a healthy ratio of gut microbiota.
Digestively, FOS contains high levels of soluble fiber which has been found to improve bowel function. Consumption of FOS also increased fecal bolus and the frequency of depositions, while a dose of 4-15 g/day given to healthy subjects has been found to reduce constipation.
According to the study, FOS also showed anti toxicity, carcinogenicity, and genotoxic effects.
FOS improved mineral absorption by decreasing levels of pH in the colon, thus facilitating the absorption of mineral ions from the intestine, mainly calcium and magnesium
Furthermore, FOS also found in studies decrease levels of serum cholesterol, triacylglycerols, the lead causes of cardiovascular diseases.
By modulating the levels of phospholipids, FOS lower the risk of coronary heart disease, inflammation or cancer, particularly in colon cancer.
In foods, FOS are increasingly included in food products and infant formulas for their prebiotic effect in stimulating the growth of nonpathogenic intestinal microflora.
In the examined the effects of chronic ingestion of short-chain fructooligosaccharides (FOS), an indigestible carbohydrate, on hepatic glucose production, insulin-mediated glucose metabolism, erythrocyte insulin binding, and blood lipids in 12 healthy volunteers selected received either 20 g FOS/d or sucrose for 4 wk in a double-blind crossover design, researchers found that the mean (+/- SEM) basal hepatic glucose production was lower after FOS than after sucrose consumption, through the effects on insulin-stimulated glucose metabolism in healthy subjects.
Taken altogether, artichoke processed many health benefits may be used as a functional remedy for disease prevention in healthy subjects, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Arnica and Its' Bioactive Sesquiterpene Lactones That Block Cancer Cells of Leukemia From Spreading, Scientists Reveal
Arnica may have a substantial and positive effect on reduced risk and treatment of osteoarthritis, some scientists suggested.
Osteoarthritis (OA), a form of arthritis, is a chronic condition characterized by wear and tear on a joint due to aging, affecting over 25 million people in the United States alone.
The University of Porto Medical School suggested that one must understand the differences in prevalence and incidence estimates of osteoarthritis (OA), according to case definition, in the knee, hip and hand joints(3).
Most common symptoms of osteoarthritis are aching pain, stiffness, or difficulty of moving the joint or joints.
The pain usually gets worse in the change of weather, at night and in the advanced diseases, the pain can occur even at rest.
Today management of osteoarthritis (OA) focuses on pain relief and improved physical function through pharmacological, nonpharmacological, and surgical treatments.
An unhealthy diet that cause nutrient deficiency and overload, damage of cartilage, joint injury that did not heal properly, overuse, autoimmune rheumatoid arthritis also have potential effects in the increased prevalence of osteoarthritis.
Arnica is a herbaceous species, genus perennial, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia, used in herbal medicine for centuries to treat strains, sprains, and bruises.
Wound healing is the process of repairing after the damage of the skin, tissues, organs, etc.
The ingredients
Helenalin, chamissonolid, Sesquiterpene lactone, lignans of the furofuran, dibenzylbutyrolactone, dibenzylbutyrolactol types, pinoresinol, epipinoresinol, phillygenin, matairesinol, nortrachelogenin, and nortracheloside, six dibenzylbutyrolactol derivative.
In a randomized, double-blind study of 204 patients to investigate the effect of ibuprofen (5%) and Arnica (50 g tincture/100 g, DER 1:20), as gel preparations in patients with radiologically confirmed and symptomatically active osteoarthritis of interphalangeal joints of hands, researchers found that after 21 days of treatment, group treated with Arnica exerted a significant effect in relieve and function of the joints of hands similar to group treated with the conventional medicine.
4.8% in the Arnica group reported some tolerate adverse effects compared to 6.1% in the group treated with ibuprofen.
After taking into account other co and con factors, Dr. the lead researcher said, "Our results confirm that this preparation of Arnica is not inferior to ibuprofen when treating osteoarthritis of hands".
In other to confirm the effect of Arnica as a form of functional food for the treatment of osteoarthritis, scientists at the Valens Clinic for Rheumatism conducted a study of topical application of Arnica montana fresh plant gel twice daily, in 26 men and 53 women with mild to moderate osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee.
According to the study, treatment after 3 and 6 weeks demonstrated a strong improvement of the median total scores on the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), used by health professionals with proprietary set of standardized questionnaires to evaluate the condition of patients with osteoarthritis, including knee and hip, including pain, stiffness, and physical functioning of the joints.
Furthermore, in regard to the symptoms expression of osteoarthritis, the application of the herbal preparation exerted a significant reduction of pain, stiffness, observed by the pain and stiffness score.
A score of the mean of function subscales also showed significant reductions at these timepoints.
The physical function subscale found in the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) is considered as more consistent with stronger test-retest reliability compared to the pain score with some inconsistencies across the studies.
However, local tolerate adverse effects were reported in 7.6 % of patients who attended the study with one patient with an allergic reaction.
Interestingly, at the end of the study, 87% rated the tolerability of the gel as "good" or "fairly good," and 76% would use it again.
These results indicated that topical application of Arnica montana gel for 6 weeks alleviated symptoms of osteoarthritis in all aspects and may be considered as a well-tolerated, and effective treatment of mild to moderate OA of the knee.
Taken together, as a topical herbal medicine, Arnica may be considered as a functional food for attenuated symptoms and treatment of osteoarthritis.

Ashwagandha Inhibits Syndromes and Diseases Associated with Chronic Stress
Chronic stress is the response to emotional pressure in demanding situations over a period of time, leading to the release of hormone cortisol and adrenaline.
Most common factors associated with stress incidence include psychological pressures, such as work deadlines, and exams, high-pressure jobs, and financial difficulties.
Overtime unresolved chronic stress can cause a wide range of symptoms and increase the risk of developing physical and psychological syndromes, including anxiety and depression.
Most common symptoms of chronic stress are irritability, difficulty concentrating, rapid, disorganized thoughts, fatigue, headaches, feeling helpless, low self-esteem and difficulty sleeping.
Some patients may also experience symptoms of digestive problems, changes in appetite and loss of sexual desire.
Dr. Mohd. Razali Salleh in the examination of the chronic stress in the risk of diseases wrote, "The relationship between stress and illness is complex. The susceptibility to stress varies from person to person. Among the factors that influenced the susceptibility to stress are genetic vulnerability, coping style, type of personality and social support".
And, "Stress also alters the acid concentration in the stomach, which can lead to peptic ulcers, stress ulcers or ulcerative colitis. Chronic stress can also lead to plaque buildup in the arteries (atherosclerosis), especially if combined with a high-fat diet and sedentary living. The correlation between stressful life events and psychiatric illness is stronger than the correlation between medical or physical illness".
In other words, chronic stress if untreated can cause a wide range of chronic diseases, including psychiatric illness.
Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean. The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of chronic stress, researchers examined the effect of Ashwagandha Root Extract on obese patients with long-term stress and anxiety.
The double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial included a total of 52 subjects under chronic stress received either Ashwagandha (300 mg) or placebo twice daily.
According to the tested differentiation at the start and at 4 and 8 weeks, including the Perceived Stress Scale and Food Cravings Questionnaire, Ashwagandha treatment group showed a significant improvement of stress associated with poor eating behaviors, including feelings of disinhibited eating, binge eating, hunger, and more ineffective attempts to control eating.
Moreover, according to the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire, Ashwagandha treatment group is more satisfied including body weight and happier than the control.
No adverse effect had been reported by participants.
Based on the results, researchers wrote, "The outcome of this study suggests that Ashwagandha root extract can be used for bodyweight management in adults under chronic stress".
Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of chronic stress, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Bilberry Improves the Nutrigenomic Activity Against the Onset of Chronic Disease In Vivo
Nutrigenomic activity is a scientific term that optimizes the interaction of nutrition and genes, especially in the prevention or treatment of disease.
In other words, the nutrigenomic activity provided information on how the interaction of certain foods with specific genes that lead to the increased risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart disease, stroke, and certain cancers.
Biologically, nutrigenomics also provided the information molecularly how chemicals found in the diet altered the expression of genes that affect the individual health.
More precisely, nutrigenomics is depending totally on an individual's genetic makeup.
Dr. Praveen Sharma, the lead scientist in the examination of the nutrigenomics and nutrigenetics effect in disease prevention and cure wrote, "Nutrigenomics is providing the effects of ingested nutrients and other food components on gene expression and gene regulation, i.e., diet-gene interaction in order to identify the dietetic components having beneficial or detrimental health effects".
And, " Like Phenylketonuria (PKU) an inborn error of metabolism which is caused by a change (mutation) in a single gene. Diagnosed individuals have to avoid food containing the aminoacid phenylalanine".
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
On finding a natural plant-based compound for the interaction of nutrients and gene expression, researchers compared the nutrigenomic activity on diet supplements of Echinacea angustifolia (EA, 0.10mg/kg live weight as echinacoside; 14 dogs), Vaccinium myrtillus (VM, 0.20mg/kg live weight as anthocyanidin, 13 dogs), Curcuma longa (CL, 6.60mg/kg live weight as curcumin, 18 dogs with arthrosis), and Sylibum marianum (SM, 1.5mg/kg live weight as sylibin, 8 dogs with hepatopathy).
24 healthy dogs selected for the study were fed with a control diet (CT) and the experimental groups received for 60days the same diet supplements aforementioned with nutraceuticals.
VM significantly inhibited the gene expression associated with the production of a pro-inflammatory cytokine and chemokine such as TNF, IL-8 and PTGS2 prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 2, compared to other treatment groups.
IL-8 is a protein or gene or a chemokine (Small cytokines) produced by immune white blood cell macrophages and other cell types such as epithelial cells, airway smooth muscle cells, and endothelial cells.
Furthermore, VM also inhibited the overexpression of factor-kappa B1 (NFKB1) which plays a critical role in the immune response to oxidant-free radicals, ultraviolet irradiation, and bacterial or viral products, leading to diseases associated with inflammation and inappropriate immune cell development or delayed cell growth.
In other words, bilberry modulates the immune response through the needs and protection of the body.
Moreover, bilberry also decreased the plasma level of ceruloplasmin (CuCp) in the regulation of free radical expression such as nitric oxide.
Ceruloplasmin is a glycoprotein produced in the liver, high levels of CuCp is associated with inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and infection such as lymphoma.
In other words, VM promotes the production of antioxidant enzymes in the host body against the induction of oxidative stress through modulating the immune response.
Dr. Sgorlon S, the lead scientist said, " nutraceutical administrations in dogs can be an interesting approach to modulate the immune response in order to improve the health condition of animals".
Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a functional remedy for the improvement of gene expression against diseases involved overexpression of immune response, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bromelain, a Natural Treatment of Pelvic Pain with No Side Effects
The pelvic girdle or hip girdle is formed by a single bone which serves as the attachment point for each lower limb.
Pelvic pain is a pain in the lowest part of the abdomen and pelvis.
In women, pelvic pain in most cases is associated with the symptoms arising from the reproductive, urinary or digestive systems.
In women, the most common causes of pelvic pain are
* Adenomyosis is a condition associated with menstrual cramp caused by the inner lining of the uterus that breaks through the muscle wall of the uterus. Adenomyosis has a negative influence on the quality of life of patients.
* Endometriosis is a medical condition characterized by the growth of endometrial cells somewhere else instead of the inside of the uterus. Endometriosis also reacts to the women menstrual cycle, leading to severe menstrual pain with maturation with no way to escape.
* Premenstrual syndrome is a faulty function of the ovaries related to the women's menstrual cycle, affecting over 70% to 90% of women in the US. The syndrome also interferes women's physical and emotional states, and daily activities as a result of hormone fluctuation that occurs one to two weeks before menstruation and then declines when the period starts.
* Mittelschmerz is one-sided, lower abdominal pain associated with ovulation occurred in the midway through a menstrual cycle, about 14 days before the next menstrual period.
Conventionally, treatment of pelvic pain is to relieve pain with over-the-counter pain medicine, such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) or acetaminophen (Tylenol, others).
If you are a long-term user of pain relievers, please make sure you know all the side effects for preventive measures.
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
With an aim to find a natural compound for the treatment of pelvic pain, researchers evaluated the efficacy of bromelain affected by chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS).
The study included patients diagnosed with CP/CPPS between January and December 2015 were randomly assigned to receive oral capsules of pollen extract and vitamins (group A) or bromelain (group B) for 3 months.
According to the returned of completed questionnaires from the 65 male patients, 8 of the 33 patients in the bromelain group showed a significant reduction in the NIH-CPSI total score compared to b24 of the 32 patients in group A.
In other words, pollen extract and vitamins (group A) treated group exerted a better outcome after 3 months of treatment.
Furthermore, levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines were significantly lower in group A compared to group B.
In the follow-up visit, group A showed a statistically significant reduction in the levels of IL-8 compared to the enrolment levels, compared to group B.
These results suggested that the efficacy of both pollen extract and vitamins (group A) and bromelain (group B) relief the pelvic pain through their anti-inflammatory activities, particularly in IL-8.
Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of pelvic pain, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
