A study from renowned institutes suggested that injection of aloe vera may be reduced risk and treatment of oral submucous fibrosis.
Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF or OSF) is a chronic condition involved in the oral cavity caused by an inflammatory reaction and progressive fibrosis of the submucosal tissues.
Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan. It is very popular for commercial cultivation due to its health benefits, used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of diseases, including wound, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes, and elevated cholesterol, etc.
According to the Sibar Institute of Dental Sciences, after 3 months of Aloe Vera treatment, patients with oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF or OSF) showed reduced levels of burning sensation and improved mouth opening.
In a total of 20 patients with oral submucous fibrosis, 10 in each group; group A subjects received 5 mg of aloe vera applied topically three times daily for 3 months and group B subjects received antioxidant capsules twice daily for 3 months study, group treated with aloe vera showed a statistically significant improvement of symptoms in comparison to control group.
Dr. Sudarshan R, the lead researcher in the study said, ". Aloe vera showed a statistically significant reduction in burning sensation (P = 0.008), improvement in mouth opening (P = 0.02), and cheek flexibility (P = 0.01) on comparing with the antioxidant group"
In support of the above differentiation, a double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group randomized controlled trial conducted on 60 subjects with OSMF by Institute of Dental Sciences, Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, insisted that group receiving aloe vera had a significant improvement in most symptoms of OSMF (P < .01) compared with the non-aloe vera group,
Other researchers suggested that the analgesic effects aloe vera in reduced symptoms and treatment of oral submucous fibrosis should be accompanied with proper habit restriction together with physiotherapy exercises.
The study also emphasized the effectiveness of treatment in ameliorated symptoms, such as burning sensation, mouth opening, tongue protrusion and cheek flexibility in comparison to other treatment groups.
Taking together, no doubt, aloe vera is effective in attenuated symptoms and treatment of patients with oral submucous fibrosis, but intake of the large amounts should only be prescribed by the herbalist.

Herbal Ashwagandha Reduces the Risk of Skin Cancer
Skin, a large organ in the human not only acts as a barrier to protect the internal organs against the invasion of the foreign pathogen, but also protects the body against mechanical impacts and pressure, variations in temperature, radiation, and chemicals.
Skin cancer is a medical condition associated with irregular cell growth in the skin tissues.
Most cases of skin cancer start in the cells on the surface of the outermost inner lining tissue before penetrating into deeper layers.
After growing in size at the advanced stage, by penetrating into deeper layers of the infected tissue, the cells of the tumor may travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs through blood and fluids circulation, leading to secondary metastasis of secondary breast, lung, and colon tumor.
Believe it or not, more people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the U.S. than all other cancers combined. As of today, there are 58 million American are living with skin cancer.
Approximately, 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70. The 5-year survival of among all people with melanoma of the skin is 92% compared to 100% of the localized skin cancer.
If you have experienced some of the symptoms such as a sore that doesn't heal or comes back after healing, a pale white or yellow flat areas that look like scars, raised and scaly red patches, small, smooth and shiny lumps that are pearly white, pink or red, a pink growth with raised edges and indents in the center and a growth that has small blood vessels on the surface of the skin, you may be on the early stage of skin cancer, please check with your doctor immediately.
Dr. Epstein JH. wrote, "Nonmelanoma skin cancers, like most malignancies, increase in incidence with increasing age. However, in general, they are not due to the aging process but are primarily due to solar radiation".
And, "genetic disease xeroderma pigmentosum support the concept that such damage, if not repaired, will lead to cancer formation. It also has been suggested that unrepaired damage to deoxyribonucleic (DNA) and other macromolecules is at least in part responsible for the aging process in general".
On finding a potent compound for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha) chemopreventive potential in a chemically-induced skin carcinogenesis mouse model.
According to the tested analysis, WA significantly suppressed skin tumor formation by suppressing cell proliferation.
Furthermore, carcinogen-induced the increase of acetyl-CoA carboxylase 1 (ACC1) associated with cancer metastasis was also blocked by the application of WA.
Additionally, in melanoma cells, WA also suppressed the expression levels of ACC1.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "withaferin A may have potential in chemoprevention and ACC1 may serve as a critical target of WA".
Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of skin cancer in breast cancer patients, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

Herbal Bilberry, The Potential Anti Intestinal Cancer Natural Remedy with No Side Effects, According to Scientists
Intestinal cancer is the medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissue of the intestines.
Most cases of intestinal cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the internal tissue. At the advanced stage, after penetrating deep layers of the intestines, the cancer cells can travel a distance away from the intestine to infect other healthy tissue and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.
Certain factors such as being overweight or obese, physical inactivity, certain types of diet. smoking excessive alcohol drinking, family and personal history and the increase in age, are associated with an increased risk of intestinal cancer.
Some researchers suggested that the increased incidence of intestinal cancer in the Western world may be associated with the promotion of a high-fat Western diet over the past many decades.
Dr. Manon D. Schulz, the lead scientists in the investigation of the effects of high-fat diet-mediated dysbiosis promotes intestinal carcinogenesis suggested, "Several aspects common to a Western lifestyle, including obesity and decreased physical activity, are known risks for gastrointestinal cancers. There is substantial evidence suggesting that diet profoundly affects the composition of the intestinal microbiota. Moreover, there is now unequivocal evidence linking dysbiosis to cancer development".
And, "Undoubtedly various factors contribute to the etiology of intestinal cancer, but there are compelling arguments to include high-fat diet (HFD) and composition of the gut microbiota as key risk factors".
The results strongly suggested that the risk of intestinal cancer can be decreased by changing the diet pattern from the Western diet to a traditional diet with higher fruits and vegetables with a lower intake of red meat and saturated and trans fat and processed foods.
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The herbal plant has been used as foods and herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment intestinal carcinogenesis examined the
intestinal carcinogenesis--relationship with tissue anthocyanin levels in an animal model.
Selected Apc(Min) mice ingested C3G or Mirtoselect at 0.03, 0.1 or 0.3% in the diet for 12 weeks, and intestinal adenomas were examined.
Where Mirtoselect, is an anthocyanin mixture from bilberry, and isolated cyanidin-3-glucoside (C3G) is the most abundant anthocyanin in the diet.
C3G and Mirtoselect at the highest doses decreased the adenoma numbers by 45% (p < 0.001) or 30% (p < 0.05), respectively, compared to controls.
According to the intestinal mucosa and urinary assays, anthocyanins were found at the analytical detection limit in the plasma and at quantifiable levels.
More precisely, the total anthocyanin levels in mice on C3G or Mirtoselect were 43 ng and 8.1 microg/g tissue, respectively, in the intestinal mucosa, and 7.2 and 12.3 microg/ml in the urine.
These results suggested that C3G and Mirtoselect in the Apc(Min) mouse processed a chemotherapeutic effect for the treatment of intestinal carcinogenesis.
Moreover, in order to reveal more information about berries anti intestinal tumorigenesis, researchers examined the different phenolic profiles on intestinal tumorigenesis in multiple intestinal neoplasia/+ mice.
Mice selected to the study were fed a high-fat AIN93-G diet (Con) or AIN93-G diets containing 10% (w:w) freeze-dried bilberry, lingonberry (LB), or cloudberry (CB) for 10 wk.
All 3 berries significantly inhibited the formation of intestinal adenomas as indicated by a 15-30% reduction in tumor numbers.
According to the Western blotting and immunohistochemistry, all 3 berries inhibited the levels of decreased levels of proteins associated with cell cycle division.
Additionally, all 3 berries exerted early protection of the cells in the intestine against the alternation of cell DNA to facilitate the onset of the disease.
The findings strongly suggested the use of berries as chemopreventive components for the treatment of intestinal carcinogenesis.
Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of
intestinal cancer, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter study.

Bromelain Blocks the Onset of Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a medical condition characterized by the growth of endometrial cells somewhere else instead of the inside of the uterus.
More precisely, on the last stage of the menstrual cycle, instead of a layer of endometriosis lining on the inside of the uterus expelled, known as menstruation blood, some of the endometriosis tissues grow somewhere in the body.
Most endometriosis tissues do not travel far. Most cases of endometriosis are diagnosed within the pelvic region, on the lining of peritoneum, in the ovaries, and on the surface of the uterus's an outside wall, however, the condition can also be found anywhere in the body such as well as fallopian tubes, the cervix, the vagina, and even the vulva.
Believe it or not, about
* 20% of reproductive-age women with endometriosis present without symptoms.
*55% of women who have developed the new onset of severe menstrual cramps.
* 25% of women with sub-fertility (less fertile than a normal couple)
Endometriosis can be classified into different stages, depending on the severity of the disease
* Minimal stage:
Commonly they are found on the top surface, of the inside wall of uterus, ligaments, and ovary with a few in numbers.
* Mild stage:
Deeper implants, greater numbers are presented. Commonly found in the same area as a minimal stage.
* Moderate stage:
Many implants, endometrial cysts present, affecting ovary function, causing scar tissues and adhesion are also present.
* Severe stage:
Intensive peritoneal implants, large endometromas present and dense adhesion.
Each woman experiences differently to endometriosis. Some women may have extensive endometrial tissues in their body but feel little or no pain at all, compared to other women in the early stage of endometriosis with excessive pain.
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of endometriosis, researchers evaluated the efficacy of an association of N-acetyl cysteine, alpha-lipoic acid, and bromelain (NAC/LA/Br) in vivo murine model and in vitro human endometriotic endothelial cells (EECs) and on endothelial cells isolated from the normal uterus (UtMECs.
In endometrial cells EECs preincubated with NAC/LA/Br, levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines associated with TNF-α were significant reduced observed by lower expression of the inflammatory "marker" VCAM1.
On human endometriotic cysts intraperitoneally into SCID mice, NAC/LA/Br exerted a strong apoptotic activity against EECs without affecting the endothelial cells isolated from the normal uterus (UtMECs).
Furthermore, compared to untreated mice, mice treated with NAC/LA/Br presented a lower number of cysts, smaller in size.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "these dietary supplements may have potential therapeutic uses in the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases like endometriosis".
Moreover, in order to reveal more information about NAC/LA/Br on symptoms of endometriosis, researchers examined the effect of N-acetyl cysteine, alpha-lipoic acid, and bromelain on endometriosis- pelvic pain.
In a total, 398 patients with a mean age of 34.6 ± 7.2 years, treatment of the combination of N-acetyl cysteine, alpha-lipoic acid, and bromelain for 6 months showed a significant improvement in endometriosis-associated pelvic pain compared to the baseline.
More precisely, compared to the baseline of 92.7% of the patients had pain intensity > 4 on the visual analog scale (VAS); treatment of NAC/LA/Br at 3 months decreased the percentage of patients to 87.2% (p = 0.074) and at 6 months to 82.7%, respectively.
Dr. Lete I, the lead scientist said, "Women with endometriosis who wish to become pregnant and are treated with a preparation containing N-acetyl cysteine, alpha-lipoic acid and bromelain experienced a significant improvement in endometriosis-associated pelvic pain and required lower intake of rescue analgesics".
Taken altogether, bromelain combined with conventional medicine may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of endometriosis and endometrial symptoms, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Aloe Vera Juice, the Potent Mouth Wash for Treatment of Oral Mucositis Caused by Chemo and Radiation Therapy in Patients with Head and Neck Cancer
Aloe vera may have a potential effect in reducing oral mucositis in patients with head and neck cancer, some scientists suggested.
Head and neck cancer is a class of cancers that start in the mouth, throat, larynx, sinuses, or salivary glands.
At the early stage, cells on the surface of the inner lining associated with head and neck start to grow irregularly and disorderly.
However, at the advanced stage, as cancer has penetrated into the deeper layers, patients may experience symptoms of a lump in the nose, neck or throat, with or without pain, a persistent sore throat that does not heal, trouble swallowing (dysphagia) and frequent and persistent coughing.
In some cases at the advanced stage, cancer cells may travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissue and organs.
Most common head and neck cancer metastases are secondary skin cancer.
Oral mucositis is one of the common side effects in cancer patients who are under chemo and radiation treatment, leading to symptoms of pain, nutritional problems as a result of an inability to eat, and increased risk of infection due to open sores in the mucosa
The symptom has been found to reduce the quality of life of cancer patients.
According to The Oral Cancer Foundation, patients experience the side effect of oral mucositis after 5 to 10 days of chemotherapy. Normally, the side effect will disappear in short few weeks, depending on the types of medicine, doses, and duration of the treatment.
Dr. Begonya Chaveli-López, the lead author in the study "Treatment of oral mucositis due to chemotherapy" wrote, "Very few interventions of confirmed efficacy are available for the management of oral mucositis due to chemotherapy. However, according to the reviewed literature, the use of palifermin, cryotherapy and low power laser offer benefits, reducing the incidence and severity of oral mucositis".
On finding a natural and effective ingredient for the treatment of oral mucositis with no side effects, researchers examined the topical Aloe vera, a widely used for mild sunburn, frostbites, and scalding burns for its effect on mucositis.
Aloe gel showed the beneficial effects of wound healing, mucous membrane protection, and treatment of oral ulcers.
Application of Aloe gel also enhanced the anti-inflammatory, immunomodulation, antifungal, scavenging free radicals, increasing collagen formation and inhibiting collagenase, epidemiological studies suggested.
Oral Aloe vera mouthwash demonstrated significant prevention of radiation-induced mucositis by its wound healing and anti-inflammatory mechanism.
The herbal mouthwash also reduced oral candidiasis of patients undergoing head and neck radiotherapy due to its antifungal and immunomodulatory properties.
These efficacies indicated that Aloe vera mouthwash may be considered an alternative potential for treating radiation-induced oral mucositis and candidiasis in patients with head and neck cancers.
Furthermore, in finding the most effective agent for the treatment of oral mucositis, the Haji Mirza Mohammad conducted a triple-blind, randomized controlled trial in the comparison of the Aloe vera mouthwash with a benzydamine mouthwash in the alleviation of radiation-induced mucositis in head and neck cancer patients.
The trial included 26 eligible head and neck cancer patients who were to receive conventional radiation therapy at the radiation oncology department were randomized to receive an Aloe vera mouthwash or a benzydamine mouthwash.
No difference in the distribution of mucositis severity between the two groups, at the baseline.
The mean interval between radiation therapy and the onset of mucositis was similar for both groups.
The mean interval between the start of radiation therapy and the maximum severity of mucositis were was also similar in both the Aloe vera and benzydamine groups (Aloe vera 23.38±10.75 days, benzydamine 23.54±15.45 days).
According to the comparison test researchers suggested that the Aloe vera mouthwash could be an alternative agent in the treatment of radiation-induced mucositis in patients with head and neck cancer due to its exertion of the similar effects as of those of beneficial as benzydamine mouthwash in alleviating the severity of radiation-induced mucositis with no side effects.
Taken altogether, herbal Aloe vera juice may be considered a functional juice for the treatment of the side effect of oral mucositis caused by chemo and radiation therapy in patients with head and neck cancer

Herbal Ashwagandha Exerts Cytotoxicity Against Leukemia in Vitro
Leukemia is a condition characterized by an abnormal increase of white blood cells produced by the bone marrow and/or the lymphatic system. Depending on the malignant granulocytes or lymphocytes, leukemia is classified into myelogenous or lymphoblastic leukemia.
Bone marrow, containing two main types of stem cells is the soft tissue inside the hollow center of the major bone, including the spine, pelvis, underarm, leg. etc. with the main function of generating blood cells.
Believe it or not, the bone marrow produces 200 billion new red blood cells every day, to replace the blood cells that die off, along with white blood cells and platelets.
According to the statistics provided by the leukemia research, leukemia is diagnosed 10 times more often in adults than children. Approximately, each year the disease causes death 68,000 Americans.
Acute leukemia is a condition caused by a rapid increase in the numbers of extreme immature white blood cells which appear in the bloodstream into other parts of the body, including tissue and organs, including acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
In ALL, lymphocytes appear immature in the bloodstream. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common children forms of leukemia with about 80% of all cases.
Chronic leukemia is a condition of the slow but still excessive build-up of relatively mature abnormal white blood cells. the condition has a tendency to spread slowly to other parts of the body through the bloodstream and/or lymphatic system, including chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML).
Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.
The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.
On finding a potent compound for the treatment of leukemias, researchers explored the antileukemic activity of the dimethyl sulfoxide extract obtained from the roots of W. somnifera (WE).
On a human T-lymphoblastoid cell line, WE exerted a significant cytostatic and cytotoxic activity against the tested cell line observed by the differentiation of the different flow cytometric assays.
Furthermore, WE cytotoxic and cytostatic potential was attributed to the effect involving in immunogenic cell death (ICD) observed in dying cancer cells that release damage-associated molecular patterns.
Furthermore, WE also promoted the intracellular Ca(2+) accumulation that alters cancer initiation and the generation of reactive oxygen species to induce cancer cell apoptosis.
In other words, the tested extract processed genotoxic potential. against leukemia cells in vitro.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "Since the use of Withania is suggested in different contexts including anti-infertility and osteoarthritis care, its genotoxicity should be carefully considered for an accurate assessment of its risk-benefit profiles".
Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and treatment of leukemia, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

Herbal Bilberry, the Natural Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) caused by the inflammation associated with colon and rectum.
Symptoms of UC is totally depending on the severity of the disease, including diarrhea, often with blood or pus, persistently abdominal pain, rectal pain, and bleeding, particularly the inability to defecate despite urgency.
Some patients with UC may also have symptoms of weight loss, fatigue fever.
According to the statistics in the US, out of 1.6 million Americans with inflammatory bowel disease, 907,000 of them have ulcerative colitis.
Depending on the location, most common types of UC can be classified into
* Acute severe ulcerative colitis is a medical emergency that requires immediate hospitalization. The condition affects the entire colon with severe acute symptoms of pain, profuse diarrhea, bleeding, fever.
* Ulcerative proctitis is an Inflammation of the anus (rectum), inducing symptoms of rectal bleeding.
* Proctosigmoiditis is an Inflammation involved in the rectum and sigmoid colon (lower end of the colon).
The exact causes of UC are not cleared. Some researchers suggested there are a complex interaction of genetics, immune response, and environmental triggers that cause the onset of the disease.
The most common risk factors of UC include genetic preposition, autoimmune diseases, smoking, use of certain medications such as antibiotics, and smoking.
Some researchers suggested that UC may be correlated with the increase of the age as the disease affected 10–30% of the population older than 60 years.
Dr. Wei-Chen, the lead scientist wrote, " Elderly patients with UC will be seen more frequently with the aging of the population and increasing incidence of UC. The management of UC in the elderly population is more complex due to comorbidities and polypharmacy".
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
On finding a natural compound or whole food for the treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC), as a significant fraction of patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) is not sufficiently controlled with conventional therapy or suffers from therapy-related side effects, researchers examined the anthocyanin-rich bilberry extract (ARBE) on the colon specimens obtained during an open pilot study using ARBE for the treatment of mild-to-moderate UC.
Pretreatment of ARBE inhibited the expression of IFN-γ-receptor 2 which plays a critical role in the regulation of mediated immune responses and organ-specific autoimmunity in human THP-1 monocytic cells.
After 6 weeks of treatment, ARBE treatment revealed reduced the production of the pro-inflammatory cytokines including IFN-γ and TNF-α.
Furthermore, ARBE treatment featured enhanced levels of Th17-cell-specific cytokine IL-22 and immunoregulatory cytokine IL-10 by restoring the balance between Th17 and Treg cells and preventing the risk of chronic inflammation and pathogenesis of many autoimmune diseases.
Dr. Roth S, the lead scientist after taking other factors into account wrote, "a molecular mechanism underlying the anti-inflammatory effects of ARBE treatment in UC patients by modulating T-cell cytokine signaling and inhibiting IFN-γ signal transduction".
In order to reveal more information about the bilberries (Vaccinium myrtillus) property on UC, researchers analyzed the antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects with an aim to explore the therapeutic potential of bilberries in the active UC.
The open pilot trial with a total follow-up of 9 weeks the effect of a daily standardized anthocyanin-rich bilberry preparation included 13 patients with mild to moderate UC.
At the end of the 6-week treatment interval, 63.4% of patients achieved remission, the primary endpoint, while 90.9% of patients showed a response.
In all patients, a decrease in total Mayo score was detected (mean: 6.5 and 3.6 at screening and week 7, respectively; p<0.001).
Fecal calprotectin levels significantly decreased during the treatment phase (baseline: mean 778 μg/g, range 192-1790 μg/g; end of treatment: mean 305 μg/g, range <30-1586 μg/g; p=0.049), including 4 patients achieving undetectable levels at end of treatment.
No serious adverse events were observed.
The finding strongly supports the regular use of standardized anthocyanin-rich bilberry preparation in UC in humans.
Dr. Biedermann L, said at the end of the experience, "These results clearly indicate a therapeutic potential of bilberries in UC. Further studies on mechanisms and randomized clinical trials are warranted".
Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanin may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of UC, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.
