Neurotoxicity refers to the destruction of nerve tissue caused by toxins that have entered central and/or peripheral nervous system.
In other words, neurotoxicity is a result of any substance including a biological, chemical, or physical agent that causes an adverse effect on the nerve system.
The central nerve system comprised of the brain and spinal cord is the complex of nerve tissues that control the activities of the body through the message transmitted by the neurons.
Most common causes of neurotoxicity are exposure to natural or man-made toxic substances, including drug, and medication. Long-term exposure to those toxins has been found to alter the activity of the nervous system.
Most common symptoms of neurotoxicity are headache, altered sensation, tingling and numbness in the limbs.
In severe cases, neurotoxicity can induce vision loss, loss of memory and cognitive function and change behavior, psychological problems and sexual dysfunction.
Therefore, if you are taking medication and experience some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of a medication overdose.
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
Researchers with an aim to discover a natural compound which protects the neurons damage induced neurotransmitter dopamine (DA) by a neurotoxic metabolite, 6-hydroxy DA, through increased expression of ROS examined the effects the antioxidant activities of anthocyanin-rich preparations of Vaccinium species (Vaccinium myrtillus, Vaccinium corymbosum, and Vaccinium oxycoccus).
V. myrtillus preparation: 50% inhibition with 7 microM of total anthocyanins were the most potent inhibition of oxidation and 1.5-4 times higher than that for the other preparations or for the purified anthocyanin.
According to the components analysis, antioxidant activity in the assay correlated strongly with the Vaccinium content of anthocyanins and total cyanidins, but not quercetin or myricetin.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote in the final report, "The results provide evidence for the high potency of anthocyanins towards a potentially neurotoxic reaction, and provide a basis for in vivo testing of these flavonoids and their physiological metabolites in the context of neuro- and mitochondrial-protective effects".
In order to reveal more information about bilberry anti neurotoxic activity, researchers once against evaluated the Vaccinium myrtillus (bilberry) anthocyanoside (VMA) and/or its main anthocyanidin constituents (cyanidin, delphinidin, and malvidin) protection of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) against neurotoxicity in the induction of retinal damage.
The vitro study included RGC cultures (RGC-5, a rat ganglion cell-line transformed using E1A virus) and cell damage and radical activation induced by 3-(4-morpholinyl) sydnonimine hydrochloride (SIN-1, a peroxynitrite donor).
The Vivo study included mice induced retinal damage by N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA)-
According to the assays, VMA and all three anthocyanidins significantly inhibited SIN-1-induced neurotoxicity and radical activation in RGC-5 in vitro and in mouse forebrain homogenates.
VMA inhibited lipid peroxidation in concentration-dependent manner.
Furthermore, intravitreously injected VMA significantly inhibited the NMDA-induced morphological retinal damage and increased TUNEL-positive cells in the ganglion cell layer.
Where terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) is a method for detecting DNA fragmentation of DNA breaks generated during apoptosis.
The results suggested VMA and its bioactive compounds anthocyanidins process neuroprotective effects in vitro and in vivo models of retinal diseases.
Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanoside may be considered a functioning remedy for the prevention and treatment against neurotoxicity, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Artichoke, Protects Your Bowels Against Colorectal Cancer, According to Studies
Artichoke may be the generation whole food medicine for the treatment of colorectal cancer caused by oxidative stress, some scientists suggested.
Colorectal cancer is the chronic diseases associated with a malignant tumor in the colon or rectum.
Most cases of colorectal cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissue of the colon or rectum.
Due to the slow growth in nature, most people with colorectal cancer do not experience any symptoms until the advanced stage.
Besides the most common symptoms of cancer such as unintended weight loss and loss of appetite, late stage of colon cancer can induce symptoms of change of bowel movement, bloody stool and persistent abdominal discomforts, such as cramps, gas or pain.
If you experience some of the above symptoms, please contact your doctor to rule out the possibility of colorectal cancer.
In this stage, cancer cells can also travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs, leading to a second metastasis.
In the US, colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death. According to the statistic provided by the American Cancer Society, approximately, there were 97,220 new cases of colon cancer. 43,030 new cases of rectal cancer. in 2018.
The 5-year relative survival rate of localized colorectal cancer is about 92%. Therefore, people who are at a higher risk of colorectal cancer should have their bowel checked every year for preventive measures.
Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.
The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine for as liver protective and detoxified agents, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.
Researchers on finding potential and natural compounds for the treatment of colorectal cancer examined the artichoke anticancer activity against DLD1 colorectal cancer cells.
The study included the extracts from wild and cultivated Cynara species obtained from their vegetative parts and receptacles were applied with five different doses from 0.1-1 mg/ml in three time periods (24, 48 and 72 hours) to the tested model.
At IC50 doses, all extracts demonstrated a significant cell apoptotic effect by stimulating the expression of a protein associated with tumor suppression.
Furthermore, at the same IC, artichoke extracts induced cancer cell death by activating the gene expression in regulating cell death.
Moreover, the injection of artichoke extracts inhibited the protein involved cell survival and pro-proliferative activity.
In other words, artichoke extracts increased the pro-apoptotic (BAX) gene expression and a cell cycle inhibitor (p21) against the tumor.
In the depth analysis, researchers also found that DNA fragmentation, the indication of cell death were also found in the tested DLD1 colorectal cancer cells.
Taken altogether, artichoke may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Andrographis Paniculata, the Best Anti Skin Aging Natural herbal Medicine
Andrographis paniculata, the forgotten herbal medicine may have a potential effect in delay skin aging, however, its therapeutic properties have rarely been applied in the field of skincare.
Skin aging, a natural biological process caused by thinning of the layer just underneath the skin can not be prevented but delayed
Andrographis paniculata is also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka, used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia,...
According to of the joint study lead by the Biospectrum Life Science Institute, in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo, Andrographis paniculata extract (APE) exhibited a significant anti-aging activity through ameliorating the process of loss of human epidermal stem cells (EpSCs).
Truly, the epidermal stem cells (EpSCs). treated with Andrographis paniculata extract (APE) exerted an anti-aging effect by increased cell quantity significantly in the G2/M and S stages in cell division in a dose-dependent manner.
The study also found that APE-treated EpSCs enhanced Type 1 collagen production in normal human fibroblasts (NHFs). and improved skin hydration, dermal density, wrinkling, and sagging significantly.
In UV-Induced Skin, Photoaging Andrographolide sodium bisulfate (ASB), a water-soluble form made from andrographolide increased the function of antioxidants in attenuated oxidative stress and inflammation responsible for ultraviolet (UV) irradiation causing skin damage and premature aging.
Dr. the lead author in the study of ultraviolet (UV) induced skin aging said, "topical administration of ASB suppressed the UV-induced skin thickness, elasticity, wrinkles, and water content, while ASB, especially at dose of 3.6 mg/mouse, increased the skin collagen content by about 53.17%, decreased the epidermal thickness by about 41.38%, and prevented the UV-induced disruption of collagen fibers and elastic fibers"
Furthermore, the study also proposed, the anti-aging effect of the herbal Andrographis may be attributed to anti enzymes in inhibited free radicals induced by oxidative stress and reduced the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
Taking together, Andrographis paniculata expressed significantly anti-skin aging effects through various mechanisms, but the intake of the large amounts should be taken with care.

Herbal Ashwagandha, the Natural Depressant
Chronic stress is the response to emotional pressure in demanding situations over a period of time, leading to the release of hormone cortisol and adrenaline.
Most common factors associated with stress incidence include psychological pressures, such as work deadlines, and exams, high-pressure jobs, and financial difficulties.
Overtime unresolved chronic stress can cause a wide range of symptoms and increase the risk of depression.
Depression is a common and serious psychological illness, affecting the physical and mental functions of patients, including the patients feeling, thinking and acting.
Some patients with depression may feel sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed.
There is no exact cause of depression. Changes in hormone levels, medical conditions, stress, grief or difficult life circumstances that initiate the change of brain chemistry in inducing depressive syndrome are some of the most prevalent factors found in patients with depression.
Most common symptoms of depression include sadness, hopelessness, guilt, change of mood, loss of interest in friends, family, favorite activities, and sex.
In severe case, some patients with depression also experience cognitive symptoms of trouble concentrating, making decisions, remembering and thoughts of harming his or herself.
According to the statistics provided by the Anxiety and Depression of Association of American, major depressive disorder is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. for ages 15 to 44.3, affecting more than 16.1 million American adults, or about 6.7% of the U.S. population age 18 and older.
Conventionally, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are the primary medication for the treatment of depression due to its relatively lower side effects compared to depressants. Other types of antidepression medication may include serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), typical antidepressants and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).
On finding a potent compound for the treatment of depression, researchers examined the effects of extracts of Withania somnifera (WSE)as an adjunctive treatment in patients with schizophrenia experiencing an exacerbation of positive symptoms.
The randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind 12-week study included patients with schizophrenia who received 1,000 mg of standardized WSE. conducted by the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
Based on the 66 patients with depression symptoms, the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale. showed the WSE exerted medium effect sizes of 0.683 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.16 to 1.21) compared to placebo.
More importantly, the adverse effects were mild and transient, according to patient reports.
Collectively, researchers wrote after taking other factors into account, "WSE may hold promise in the treatment of depression... symptoms in schizophrenia".
Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention of depressive symptoms in patients with schizophrenia, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

Bilberry, the Potent Antioxidants, Researchers Reveal
Researchers may have found a natural whole food for the treatment of oxidative stress-related diseases with no side effects, according to the studies.
Oxidative stress is a result of long-term overexpression of free radicals compared to the levels of antioxidants.
In other words, the depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the body is no longer can perform the function of neutralizing the free radical expression.
Free radicals are unstable atoms that have an unpaired electron on the outer ring. Therefore, in order to maintain stable, free radicals must donate or intercept an electron from other atoms, causing the domino's reaction that can not be stopped until all single electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.
Antioxidants are stable atoms that inhibit oxidation.
Oxidative stress has been found to induced protein, lipid and alternation of cellular DNA, leading to the incidence of chronic illness and cancers.
Furthermore, although free radicals are a normal byproduct of oxygen metabolism, certain environmental and behavioral factors such as exposure to radiation and toxic chemicals and smoking can dramatically increase the number of free radicals in the body.
Some researchers suggested, maintaining a balanced ratio free radicals and antioxidants are the best way for good health.
Dr. V. Lobo, the lead scientist in the evaluation of the free radicals and antioxidants wrote, " A balance between free radicals and antioxidants is necessary for proper physiological function. If free radicals overwhelm the body's ability to regulate them, a condition known as oxidative stress ensues. Free radicals thus adversely alter lipids, proteins, and DNA and trigger a number of human diseases".
And, "Hence the application of an external source of antioxidants can assist in coping this oxidative stress. Synthetic antioxidants such as butylated hydroxytoluene and butylated hydroxyanisole have recently been reported to be dangerous for human health".
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The herbal plant has been used as foods and herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
Scientists with an aim to find a natural remedy for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress investigated the bilberry antioxidant activity in an animal model.
Selected rats were divided into 4 groups: control, rats treated with only gentamicin, with the only bilberry, and treated with both gentamicin and bilberry.
By analyzing the oxidative stress markers and levels of antioxidants produced by the host, bilberry (100 mg/kg daily) showed a strong nephroprotective effect by improving the antioxidant status against gentamicin toxicity in rats.
These results clearly suggested that bilberry exerted a significant effect was attributed to the expression of the levels of the polyphenolic content, particularly anthocyanin.
Dr. after taking into account so and confounders said, " the demonstrated protective activity of bilberry extract matched well with the assessed in vivo and in vitro antioxidant activity as well as with its polyphenolic content, particularly with high anthocyanin levels".
In order to determine the antioxidant activity in bilberry, researchers examined the hepatoprotective effects of anthocyanins from bilberry extract in rats exposed to carbon tetrachloride (CCl4).
Rats selected to the study also were assigned randomly into four groups: Group I (0.9% NaCl-10days), Group II (bilberry extract, 75mg/kg-10days), Group III (0,9% NaCl-9days, and on the tenth day CCl4-2ml/kg), Group IV (bilberry extract, 75mg/kg-10days and on the tenth day CCl4-2ml/kg).
Compared to the nontreatment group, the bilberry extract group showed a significant decrease in the activity of biochemical parameters in serum associated with liver damage, including the levels of free radicals and lipid peroxidation in the liver.
Furthermore, bilberry extract treatment group IV displayed a strong improvement of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host compared to Group III.
Injection of bilberry extract also showed an increase in the number of apoptotic hepatocytes and the activity of caspase-3 in the liver tissue which has been damaged by the injection of CCl4.
The findings suggested that the anthocyanins from bilberry extract have strong antioxidant properties against the CCl4 induced liver toxicity and oxidative stress.
Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, pending to the reconfirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Bilberry, Protects your Lung Against Mycobacterium tuberculosis
Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) is a group of bacteria that cause tuberculosis through infection. Most cases of Mycobacterium tuberculosis are found in the lungs.
Mycobacterium tuberculosis is pathogens that can cause tuberculosis (TB) in humans discovered in 1882 by Robert Koch.
According to statistics, 8 million new cases of TB were diagnosed annually. The disease causes the death of 2 million people worldwide, mostly in the third world.
Most people infected by MAC are asymptomatic as the bacteria remaining in your body in the inactive state. Latent TB is not contagious.
In the active stage, TB can induce symptoms of persistent coughing, unintentional weight loss, and fatigue.
In severe cases, TB can cause or pain with breathing or coughing, coughing up blood and chest pain.
Active TB is very contagious, it can spread through tiny droplets released into the air via coughs and sneezes.
All cases of active tuberculosis are treated with antibiotics that lasts six to nine months.
However, the length of treatment is totally depending on the patients age and overall health, the infected location.
Some researchers suggested People with a weakened immune system are prone to the infection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
Dr. S H E Kaufmann said, "Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Of these, fewer than 10% ever develop the disease, although the pathogen is not eradicated but rather contained in discrete lesions. Hence, the immune system is highly effective in containing the pathogen but fails to eradicate it".
And, "Disease typically develops through reactivation once the immune system is weakened"
In the urgency to find a natural source for the treatment of Mycobacterium aurum tuberculosis for the third world countries, where the Western medications are scarce, researchers examined the efficacy of Vaccinium myrtillus (MIC = 8 microg/mL) extract.
Compared to the ethanol extracts of Xerocomus badius, Chalciporus piperatus, Suillus luteus and of endophytes isolated from C. vulgaris, E. nigrum, Vaccinium Vitis-idaea, V. myrtillus respectively at 90 to 96% inhibition at 100 microg/mL exerted a potent antitubercular activity.
Compared to herbal C. arbuscula, Empetrum nigrum, J. communis roots, Calluna vulgaris aerial parts, Myrica gale the roots and stems at 93 to 99% inhibition at 100 microg/mL V. myrtillus showed a lesser efficacy.
These results provided some scientific basis for the traditional use of V. myrtillus for the treatment of tuberculosis.
Thes results also strongly indicated that fungal endophytes recovered from Scottish plants are a source of antimycobacterial agents
Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a functioning remedy for the treatment of TB, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Artichoke Inhibits Plaques That Cause Atherosclerosis, Scientists Say
Atherosclerosis is a chronic disease associated with hardening and stiffing of the arterial wall caused by long-term plague accumulation, leading to the reduced function of the arterial to transport oxygen risk blood to the heart and the body.
Atherosclerosis is also a leading cause of 3 types of cardiovascular disease, including heart attacks, strokes, and peripheral vascular disease.
Plaque is a substance made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood.
Atherosclerosis is a very slow-growing disease, the progression of the disease are associated with the slow plaque accumulation which starts at an early age, depending on the diet and lifestyle pattern.
The most common symptoms of atherosclerosis are associated with the reduced supply of oxygen to tissue and organs, including chest pain or angina. pain in your leg, arm, shortness of breath. fatigue. confusion, muscle weakness in your legs from lack of circulation.
If you experience some of the above symptoms, please make sure that you check with your doctor to rule the possibility of atherosclerosis.
Conventionally, most cases of atherosclerosis are treated with Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors which help to slow the progression of atherosclerosis by lowering blood pressure and producing other beneficial effects on the heart arteries.
However, some researchers suggested that heart-healthy lifestyle changes may also have a strong implication on the disease.
Dr. Matthias Nahrendorf, the lead scientist in the examination of the link between lifestyle and risk of atherosclerosis, said, "Accumulating data indicate that psychosocial stress and a high-fat, high-cholesterol diet aggravate the cardiovascular disease, whereas regular physical activity and healthy sleeping habits help prevent it".
The results clearly suggested that people followed a healthy lifestyle are associated with the risk of
atherosclerosis.
Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.
The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.
On review of the clinical and pharmacological of artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.), used in European medicine from the 18th century for the treatment of chronic disease, researchers examined the herbal remedy effect against atherosclerosis.
Injection of artichoke inhibited the onset and progression of atherosclerosis by modulating the levels of plasma lipid levels through the inhibition of lipid peroxidation.
Furthermore, artichoke also induced the production of antioxidant enzymes against free radical oxidation in the liver tissues.
In other words, artichoke protected the arteries against the accumulation of plaque on the arterial wall by protecting the liver in lipid metabolism through its antioxidant activity.
Furthermore, in order to reveal more information about artichoke anti-atherosclerosis activity, researchers evaluated the polyphenols and flavonoids in artichoke leaf tincture (ALT) against cellular oxidative damage.
The study included 18 male Wistar albino rats divided into three groups (n = 6/group):
* The control group (CG) was fed with standard pellet chow for 11 weeks;
* The AD group was fed for a similar period of time with pellet chow supplemented with 2% cholesterol, 3% sunflower oil and 1% sodium cholate. and
* The ADA group was fed with pellet chow (for 1 week), the atherogenic diet (see above) for the following 4 weeks and then with ALT (0.1 mL/kg body weight) and atherogenic diet for 6 weeks.
During the study, researchers found that compared to the AD group
* The ADA group exerted a significant increase of antioxidants activity observed by the expression of heme oxygenase-1 (HO1).
* The ADA group lower the expression of MCP-1 which has been strongly linked to atherosclerosis in both animal and human studies.
* The ADA group lower the DNA scores associated with the risk of atherosclerosis.
Compared to the CG group, the HO-1 mRNA involved immune response was also lower in the ADA group.
In other words, artichoke inhibited the effects of the atherogenic diet through reduced MCP-1 expression, thereby preventing oxidative damage.
Taken altogether, artichoke may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.
