Catnip may have a potential and substantial effect in reduced risk of pre-malignant cells slowly change from the properties of normal cells to cancer-like properties in initiated prostate cancer, some scientists suggested.
Catnip is also known as catswort, or catmint, a plant of Nepeta, belonging to the family of Lamiaceae, native to Europe and Asia, used in herbal medicine as insect repellant and to treat digestive disorders, children restlessness and nervousness, fevers, colds and flu, skin irritations stimulate sweating, promote menstruation, etc..
Ingredients
Besides the major constituent of terpenoid nepetalactone, the herb also contains α-Pinene, β-Pinene, Cyclohexen-1-yl-methyl ketone, Triplal, Thymol, Nepetalactone, Nepetalactone, etc..
Prostate cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissues of the prostate. At the later stage, the cancerous cell may invade other healthy tissues and organs a distance away from the original site.
According to statistics, based on 2012-2014 data, approximately 11.6 percent of men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some points during their lifetime.
On PC3 and DU145 prostate cell lines, in comparison of the effective of methanol extracts, n-hexan, methylene chloride (CH2Cl2), ethyl acetate (EtOAc), n-butanol (n-BuOH), and H2O fractions and the essential oil isolated from the aerial parts of the catnip to examine the cytotoxic and apoptogenic activity found that application of ethyl acetate extract in compared to other extracts, displays a strong inhibited property in decreased prostate cancer cell viability in PC3 cell line, through cell cycle arrest in the sub-G1 area, where the cancer cell has lost some DNA structure, in a concentration-dependent manner.
Furthermore, through observation of IC 50 values, ethyl acetate (EtOAc) expressed a greater significant activity in estrogen receptor-positive PC3 cells which are more sensitive to the cytotoxic effects in comparison with low hormone-receptor presenting DU-145 cells.
Interestingly, ethyl acetate (EtOAc) in inhibited PC3 cancer cell line with the lesser value of IC50 and greater effect than other tested compounds was attributed to the activity of PC3 cells can change its negative androgen receptors profile to positive (PC3AR+)
The study also indicated that more cytotoxic activity of N. cataria found on PC3 cells in comparison with DU145 AR¯ cells might also due to different responses of cells to sex hormones.
Additionally, according to the Western blotting analysis administration of ethyl acetate extract after 48 hours securely induced cancer apoptosis through activated caspase 3 cleavage which has been found to be an important marker and in the association with the cell’s entry point into the apoptotic signaling pathway and Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) which also plays an essential role in execution of the apoptotic event and an early indicator of apoptosis.
Moreover, researchers also found that the Catnip extract also increased level of Bax Protein after 48 hours of exposure in initiated cancer cell apoptosis with release of cytochrome c, an early phase of cell degradation and death.
After taking into account other confounders, Dr. Emami SA, the lead author said, " the semi-polar EtOAc extract of N. cataria induces apoptosis in pc3 cells to compare to DU-145 cells and further analytical assays are suggested to identify the active phytochemicals possess cytotoxic activity".
Taking all together, eggplant with plenty of phytochemicals may be considered as a functional food in reduced risk of Prostate cancer by blocking the entry phase of the onset of prostate cancer.

Bromelain Blocks the Onset and progression of Invasive Glioma in Vitro
A glioma is a type of brain and spinal cord tumor characterized by the alternation of DNA of the glial cells.
Believe it or not, gliomas have been found accounting for 30 percent of all brain tumors and central nervous system tumors, and 80 percent of all malignant brain tumors.
Glioma can be classified into 3 types, including
* Astrocytomas are found in glial cells, star-shaped brain cells in the cerebrum called astrocytes. Most astrocytomas are localized.
* Ependymomas are cancers that grow in your brain or any part of the spine, including your neck and upper and lower back starting from the ependymal cells in the middle of your spinal cord and fluid-filled spaces in your brain.
* Oligodendrogliomas are cancers that begin on the oligodendrocytes of the brain or from a glial precursor cell.
The exact cause is unknown. Epidemiologically, age, exposure to radiation and family history are common risk factors that cause the onset of the disease,
Out of many prevalent factors, exposure to ionizing radiation has been found in many patients with glioma.
Dr. Maricruz Rivera, the lead scientist wrote, "Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common primary malignant brain tumor in adults with a median survival of 12–15 months with treatment consisting of surgical resection followed by ionizing radiation (IR) and chemotherapy".
And, "While IR provides the benefit of improved survival, it paradoxically promotes a selection of more malignant cellular phenotypes of GBM".
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of invasive glioma cells, researchers investigated bromelain, an aqueous extract from pineapple stem against anti-invasive gliomas.
According to the tested assays, bromelain significantly and reversibly reduced glioma cell adhesion, migration, and invasion without affecting cell viability.
In other words, bromelain inhibited cancer cell proliferation and spreading without inducing cell apoptosis.
Levels of alpha 3 beta 1 integrin-associated with gliomas cells spreading and CD44 protein associated with cancer cell progression were also inhibited by the administration of bromelain without affecting the gene expression.
In other words, the metabolic pathways for de novo nucleotide synthesis in cancer growth were greatly attenuated by bromelain.
Moreover, according to the transactivating signaling assay, bromelain inhibited the invasive glioma cell was also attributed to the suppression of CRE-mediated signaling processes in stimulating the tumor expansion.
Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of invasive glioma cells. , pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Calendula, the Best in Speeding Up Wound Healing with No Side Effects
Herbal may have a strong effect on speeding up wound healing, according to studies by a number of institutes.
Wound healing is a natural process of our body by restoring the function of the damaged or injured tissue through several stages.
Most importantly, the early stage of wound healing is also known as an acute phase of infection, which starts as soon as the immune system sensing the tissue damage by stimulating the blood vessels to provide the damaged tissue with blood palette to cover the wound temporarily and activated the proteins associated with the production of inflammatory cytokines to the site of infection with an aim to kill off all micro invaders.
In most cases, the immune first line of defense can destroy the pathogens and speed up the recovery of the damage through inducing fiber tissue reconstruction, new blood vessels.
However, overproduction of a proinflammatory cytokine in this phase may cause damage and death of nearby cells, leading to the formation of scars.
If the immune system can not kill off all the invaded pathogens within a set of times, normally in 3-8 weeks, it will adapt to the new change, leading to low-grade inflammation, a major cause of several chronic ailments, including diabetes, heart diseases.
If the process of wound healing is disrupted, it may also lead to improper wound healing with complications, including inadequate scar formation, excessive scar formation, and a contracture formation, an exaggeration of normal wound edge contraction forming deformities.
Calendula is also known as pot marigold, annual or perennial herbaceous plants of about 12–20 species of genus Calendula, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Southern Europe. It has been used in herbal medicine as spasmolytic, spasmogenic, inflammatory effects and for the treatment of abdominal cramps, wound healing, skin diseases, colitis, constipation, etc.
Besides major chemical constituents of triterpenoids, flavonoids, coumarins, quinones, volatile oil, carotenoids, and amino acids, the herb also contains loliolide (calendin), calendulin and n-paraffins.
Researchers on finding a natural ingredient for speeding up wound healing examined the effect of Calendula officinalis, an annual herb from the Mediterranean origin which is popularly used in wound healing and as an anti-inflammatory agent.
Injection of C. officinalis demonstrated significantly anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities in protecting the wound against infection.
Furthermore, C. officinalis also speed up the wound healing process by enhancing the angiogenic and fibroblastic properties.
The findings strongly suggested that herbal Calendula can act in a positive way on the inflammatory and proliferative phases of the healing process.
Moreover, in the evaluation of the effects of oral and topical application of Calendula officinalis flower extract on excision wounds made in rats, compared to the control of 51.1%, oral and topical application of Calendula showed a wound closure was 90.0%.
The extract treatment at a dose of 20 or 100 mg/kg b.wt reduced the period needed for re-epithelization to 14 and 13 days, respectively compared to 17.7 days in the control.
Additionally, the extract-treated group also exhibited a significant increase in the concentration of collagen. compared to the untreated animals.
Interestingly, in a total of 36 rats and 90 embryonated eggs used to evaluate healing and angiogenic activities of extracts and fractions of Calendula, through the induction of skin wounds and the chorioallantoic membrane, respectively, researchers found that
* Injection of calendula extract exerted an angiogenic activity in speeding up wound healing in both experimental models.
* The efficacy was not attributed to the signal protein produced by cells that stimulate the formation of blood vessels, but other unknown pro-angiogenic factors.
Taken altogether, herbal Calendula may be considered a functional remedy for speeding up wound healing with no side effects.

Herbal Ashwagandha Inhibits the Risk of Chronic Generalized Periodontitis
Gingivitis is a common and mild form of periodontal disease caused by inflammation of the gingiva, leading to symptoms of irritation, redness, and swelling of the gum that lines the base of the teeth.
Gingivitis dental plaques formed around the base of the teeth are sticky biofilm of bacteria associated with the interaction of the food intake and bacteria in the mouth. Over time, if untreated, the condition can lead to periodontitis and advanced periodontitis.
At this early stage, the bone and connective tissue that hold the teeth in place are not yet affected. The problems can be reversed by more frequent and proper brushing and flossing.
The most common cause of gingivitis is poor hygiene. Epidemiologically, risk factors induce the onset of gingivitis are smoking or chewing tobacco. diabetes and long-term use of certain medication including oral contraceptives, steroids, anticonvulsants, calcium channel blockers.
Some people under the treatment of chemotherapy may also experience symptoms of gingivitis.
Periodontitis is a severe stage of gingivitis that damages the soft tissue and destroys the bone that supports your teeth, leading to teeth loosen or tooth loss.
Periodontitis can be classified into
* Chronic periodontitis is caused by plaque buildup and involves the slow deterioration of the gums and bone and loss of teeth if not treated. The condition is a common condition that affects mostly adults.
* Aggressive periodontitis found mostly in childhood or early adulthood. The condition is rare that causes rapid progression of bone and tooth loss if untreated.
* Necrotizing periodontal disease is a severe infection that causes the death of gum tissue, tooth ligaments and supporting bone.
Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean. The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.
On finding a potent compound for the treatment of oral health, researchers examined the effects of WA on periodontitis.
In vitro, Herbal ashwagandha possessed a marked anti-inflammatory effect against the denaturation of proteins associated with the loss of the quaternary structure, tertiary structure, and secondary structure, probably through the herbal alkaloid and withanolide contents.
Furthermore, herbal ashwagandha also induced adaptogenic, immunomodulating, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory against on the onset of periodontitis.
The enzymatic antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase produced by the host are increased by the administration of WA against bacterial-induced inflammatory periodontitis.
Moreover, Ashwagandha supplementation also showed to process activity to act as an adjunct to scaling and root planing(SRP) in chronic periodontitis(CP) patients by inhibiting oxidative stress (OS) and increased levels of acute-phase proteins associated with gingival inflammation and periodontitis.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "Changes in peripheral blood cellular and molecular components can be seen in patients with periodontitis, as periodontitis includes inflammatory changes of the periodontal tissues".
Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of periodontitis, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

Herbal Bilberry Processed Anti Alzheimer's disease Potency in Vitro and Vivo
Alzheimer's disease is a chronic neurodegenerative disease caused by the gradual loss of neuron functioning that usually starts with the early symptom of the difficulty of remembering recent events and worsens over time.
The disease is most prevalent in the elderly and causes over 60% of all cases of dementia.
According to the statistics, approximately 5.7 million Americans of all ages have Alzheimer's. 15.9 million family caregivers provided an estimated 18.2 billion hours and $230 billion to people with dementia worldwide.
Epidemiological studies suggested that Alzheimer's disease is caused by a combination of genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors that affect the neurons of the brain over time.
Although, less than 10% of patients with AD are associated with a genetic preposition. Patients with such a mutated gene are virtually guaranteed to develop the disease.
More precisely, any one of a number of different single-gene mutations on chromosomes 21, 14, and 1 was found to induce the onset of AD.
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD) investigated the effects of anthocyanoside extracts (Vaccinium myrtillus anthocyanoside (VMA)) obtained from bilberry on the in vitro progression of Aβ fibril formation and in vivo effects of this compound on AD pathogenesis.
In Neuro2a cells, injection of VMA inhibited the in vitro formation of Aβ peptide fibrils in the induction of neuron toxicity.
Furthermore, A diet containing 1% VMA prevented the cognitive degeneration was found in the tested AD mice.
Interestingly, this diet in the retention of cognitive ability was not accompanied by a reduction in the aggregate deposition in brains but rather, an increase in insoluble deposits, compared to control mice.
The results suggested that VMA shows a strong effect on Alzheimer's disease by altering the Aβ aggregation to a non-toxic form.
In order to reveal more information about bilberry anti AD activity, researchers elucidated the effects of different polyphenols on neuroprotection and APP processing under different in vitro stress conditions.
Injection of myricetin, quercetin or anthocyanin-rich extracts in a dose-dependent manner significantly inhibited the overexpression of free radicals caused by the application of Menadione.
APdE9 mice fed with anthocyanin-rich bilberry or blackcurrant extracts showed decreased APP C-terminal fragment levels, the amyloid precursor protein in the cerebral cortex, compared to APdE9 mice on the control diet.
Levels of soluble Aβ40 and Aβ42 levels were found to significantly decrease in bilberry-fed mice, compared to blackcurrant-fed mice.
Additionally, the bilberry diet also improved the spatial working memory of aged APdE9 mice, compared to mice on the control diet.
Based on the findings, Dr. Vepsäläinen S, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "These data suggest that anthocyanin-rich bilberry and blackcurrant diets favorably modulate APP processing and alleviate behavioral abnormalities in a mouse model of AD".
Taken altogether, bilberry rich of anthocyanin may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD), pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Andrographis, The Best Anti Platelet Aggregation Herbal Medicine
A recent vitro study suggested that Andrographis paniculata exerted an enormous inhibitory effect on platelet aggregation.
Antiplatelet activity is the effect of decreased platelet aggregation and inhibited thrombus formation.
Andrographis paniculata is also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka, used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia,.....
According to the Mahidol University, diterpenoids isolated from the plant, including andrographolide (AP(1)) and 14-deoxy-11,12-didehydroandrographolide (AP(3)) in the thrombin-induced platelet aggregation, significantly inhibited blood clot a concentration-(1-100 microM) but not in higher doses, and time-dependent manner.
The study also suggested that the effect of this action was attributed to the inhibition of the regulation of functions in differentiate cells.
Due to inefficacy in applications of higher concentrations, Dr. said, "the extract with high level of AP(3) (Extract B) (IC(50) values=50-75 microg/ml) showed less inhibitory activity against thrombin than the extract with lower level of AP(3) (Extract A) (IC(50) values=25-50 microg/ml). These results indicate that the standardized A. paniculata extract may contain other antiplatelet compounds rather than AP(1) and AP(3), which contribute to high antiplatelet activity".
In comparison to platelet aggregation effects with non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAID), treatment of the herbal medicine showed a strong influence on the biosynthesis of eicosanoids in cell signaling and the platelet-activating factor (PAF) with the ability to cause platelet aggregation, inflammation, and allergic response,...
The study also proposed that the mechanism of these actions may be associated with the cardiovascular and antithrombotic activity compared to that of non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAID),
Other study insisted that the effects of andrographolide in platelet activation may be a result of reducing the mortality of ADP-induced acute pulmonary thromboembolism and significantly prolonged platelet clumping formation of which decrease the platelet aggregation activity.
Taking together, there is no doubt that herbal Andrographis processes an anti-Platelet Aggregation through exhibiting the functions of various mechanisms. People with bleeding disorders should only take herbal medicine with the permission of related field specialists.
