Scientists may have found a natural remedy for the prevention and treatment of the diseases associated with the expression of oxidative stress, according to studies.
Antioxidants are stable molecules that inhibit the oxidation induced by free radicals.
Free radicals are unstable and high reactive molecules with a single electron in the outer ring.
In order for them to become stable, free radicals are ready to donate or intercept an electron from other molecules, leading to a chain reaction that cannot be stopped until the electrons on the outer ring are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.
Oxidative stress is a condition caused by either overexpression of free radical or low levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host body.
In other words, the unbalanced ratio of the levels of free radicals and antioxidants enzymes is the major cause of the onset of oxidative stress, leading to the damage of lipid, DNA, and protein in the cells of the host.
Although there are many risk factors associated with the development of the condition, some researchers suggested that smoking is one of the preventable and major risks in the induction of the onset of oxidative stress.
Dr. Isik B in the comparison of the risk of oxidative stress in smokers and nonsmokers wrote, "Smoking may enhance oxidative stress not only through the production of reactive oxygen radicals in smoke but also through the weakening of the antioxidant defense systems".
And, ": The serum MDA levels were significantly higher (p < .05) and serum PON1 activities were significantly lower (p < .001) in smokers than in nonsmokers".
Where serum malondialdehyde (MDA) is an oxidative stress marker and paraoxonase (PON1) is an HDL-associated enzyme that protects the HDL against oxidation.
Calendula is also known as pot marigold, annual or perennial herbaceous plants of about 12–20 species of genus Calendula, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Southern Europe.
The herbal medicine has been used in herbal medicine as spasmolytic, spasmogenic, inflammatory effects and for the treatment of abdominal cramps, wound healing, skin diseases, colitis, constipation, etc.
Besides major chemical constituents of triterpenoids, flavonoids, coumarines, quinones, volatile oil, carotenoids, and amino acids, the herb also contains loliolide (calendin), calendulin and n-paraffins.
Researchers on finding herbal medicine which process a high amount of antioxidants examined the
Calendula officinalis flower extract effects against experimentally induced thermal burns made on the shaven back of the rats under anesthesia in rats.
The animals then are treated orally with different doses of the flower extracts (20 mg, 100 mg, and 200 mg/kg body weight).
Injection of the extracts showed significant improvement in healing when compared with the control untreated animals.
The wound healing is observed by the speeding up through the increase of the concentration of collagen contents in the treated group.
The acute phase proteins associated with the oxidative activity was increased due to burning were found to be decreased significantly in 200 mg/kg body weight extract-treated animals.
The antioxidant defense mechanism decreased in the liver during burn injury, was found to be enhanced in treated animals.
The lipid peroxidation was significantly lowered in the treated group, accompanied by a decrease of the tissue damage marker compared to control animals.
Furthermore, in the investigation of the Flower extract of C. officinalis L. protective effect against CCl4 induced acute hepatotoxicity and cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity, pretreatment of the flower extract at 100 and 250 mg/kg body weight exerted a significant reduction of the tissue and oxidative stress markers compared to the untreated group.
The extract displayed a liver protective effect observed by the decreased levels of lipid peroxidation the marker of membrane damage and the total bilirubin content in the liver.
Moreover, the herbal extract also demonstrated kidney protective effects observed by the reduced levels of the kidney function markers, urea, and creatinine which were significantly increased in cisplatin-treated animals.
Additionally, the cisplatin-induced myelosuppression was ameliorated by the extract pretreatment, by enhancing the levels of antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase and catalase and glutathione.
Dr. Preethi KC, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "Possible mechanism of action of the flower extract may be due to its antioxidant activity and reduction of oxygen radicals".
Taken altogether, herbal Calendula may be considered a functional remedy for the protection of our body against disease associated with oxidative stress, through its antioxidant activity.

Andrographis paniculata, The Herbal Remedy Which Protects Neurons Integrity Against Onset of Alzheimer's disease
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that is irreversible and starts slowly and worsens over time, affecting patients thinking ability and memory, correlated with major reductions of neurons to the respective target areas. The disease is named after German physician Alois Alzheimer's.
Some researchers suggested that the disease is caused by a prolonged period of plaques excessive accumulation in the brain cells, leading to brain cells degeneration and death.
People with Alzheimer's disease may experience the decline of cognitive and functional abilities, change of motions and moods and behavior, particularly, in reducing the quality of life due to disability in physical activity.
According to the statistic provided by the Alzheimer.Net, approximately, 44 million people have Alzheimer’s or related dementia worldwide. The disease is most common in North America and Western Europe.
Alzheimer’s disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States.
In the US, Alzheimer’s cost the United States taxpayer $259 billion in 2017.
Andrographis paniculata is also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka.
The herb has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia,...
According to the joint study lead by the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, oral administrated natural product (Andrographolide, ANDRO) isolated from Andrographis paniculata in species Octodon degus (degu) exhibited the recovery of spatial memory and learning performance, through regulated phosphorylated tau protein and amyloid-beta aggregate maturation in cell survival in inducing Alzheimer's disease.
Dr., the lead author in the joint study said, "(Andrographolide, ANDRO) inhibited) neural damage associated with aging processes and the behavioral and neuropathological hallmarks of aging-related diseases such as AD"
Additionally, Andrographolide also displayed the inhibitory activity against forming of amyloid-beta (Aβ)42 through suppression of NF-κB, a protein that regulates cell survival and function of microglia in activated response to brain damage and immunological stimuli together with the reduction in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
In an animal study, mice treated with Andrographolide increased neural progenitor cell proliferation and decreased the number of immature neurons in the hippocampus, compared to age-matched control mice.
Moreover, ANDRO increased the number of newborn dentate granule neurons in various parts of the brain.
The study also found that the efficacy that reduces symptoms and protects against the early onset of AD is the result of the stimulation of neurogenesis in the hippocampus.
Taking together, Andrographis paniculata is surely consisted of a therapeutic potential to protect the development of Alzheimer's disease through various mechanisms, however, intake of large amount daily should be taken with care.
However, additional data collection on large example size and multi centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of Andrographis paniculata anti-Alzheimer's disease possibilities.

Herbal Aloe vera, the Anti Primary Glioblastoma Functional Remedy
Aloe vera may process a strong implication in reducing the risk of primary glioblastoma, according to studies.
Primary glioblastoma is considered the most aggressive cancer that begins within the brain. Cancer may arise de novo, meaning they begin as a Grade IV tumor with no evidence.
According to the statistic, the median survival time of primary glioblastoma is approximately 3 months without medical treatment. Glioblastomas represent about 15% of all primary brain tumors.
Due to the rapid growth of the tumor, patients diagnosed with primary glioblastoma experience brain swelling and increased brain pressure, leading to symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and severe headaches and localized symptoms depending on the location of the tumor.
Radiation and chemotherapy are the most common forms of treatment for patients with glioblastoma particularly, in a tumor that cannot be removed with surgery.
Increased age, and genetic preposition are the 2 most common risk factors of the diseases. Dr. Athanassios P. Kyritsis, in the concern of the rapid progression of glioblastoma, wrote, "Scientific evidence during the last few years has revealed several constitutive genetic abnormalities that may influence glioma formation".
And, "These germline abnormalities are manifested as either gene polymorphisms or hemizygous mutations of key regulatory genes that are involved either in DNA repair or in apoptosis".
Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan. It has become very popular for commercial cultivation due to its health benefits.
The herbal plant has been used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of disease, including wound, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes, and elevated cholesterol, etc.
Researchers on the finding a natural compound for the treatment of cancer examined the anti-brain cancer effect of Aloe-emodin isolated from the leaves of Aloe vera in human U87 malignant glioma cells.
Injection of Aloe-emodin exerted a significant apoptotic activity and induced proliferation in a time- and dose-dependent.
The percentage of viable U87 cells was also deceased substantial via the induction of apoptosis.
The formation of apoptotic bodies was observed by the confocal microscope by Annexin V-FITC/PI staining.
Aloe-emodin inhibits the human U87 malignant glioma cells, was attributed to the arrested the cell cycle in the S phase and promoted the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential in U87 cells.
In order to reveal the inhibitory efficacy mechanisms of Aloe-emodin against human U87 malignant glioma cells, researchers at the University of South Florida, Tampa, examined the effects of the bioactive compound through the aspects of the cell cycle, cell proliferation and protein kinase C (PKC) during glioma growth and development.
In cell cycle arrest, according to the flow cytometry assay, Aloe-emodin delayed the number of cells entering and exiting the DNA synthesis (S) phase in both SVG and U-373MG cells, a strong indication that Aloe-emodin may inhibit S phase progression.
In cell viability assay, SVG and U-373MG glioma cells were highly sensitive to the application of Aloe-emodin.
Furthermore, injection of Aloe-emodin-induced decreased proliferation, sustained at 48-96 hours.
Exposure of SVG and U-373MG glioma cells to aloe-emodin suppressed PKC activity in the promotion of cancer cell proliferation by reduced the protein content of most of the PKC enzymes.
Moreover, Aloe-emodin inhibited cancer growth was also associated with the activation of a protein in programming cell death.
Taken altogether, herbal Aloe vera processed a major bioactive compound Aloe-emodin may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary therapy for the treatment of brain cancer, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Artichoke Normalizes the Levels of Serum Cholesterol in Vivo and Human Study
Hyperlipidemia is a chronic condition of abnormally high blood cholesterol in the bloodstream.
Cholesterol is a waxy substance produced by the liver or dietary intake that processes a significant activity in the improvement of the digestive system by breaking down food, in the production of vitamin D and steroid hormone, particularly in the building of strong cell membranes.
There are 2 types of cholesterol. The low-density lipoprotein is also known as bad cholesterol which performs the aforementioned activity in the right levels and high-density lipoprotein which returns cholesterol back to the liver for reuse.
However, overexpression of cholesterol can cause plaque building up on the arterial wall, leading to arterial narrowing, wall stiffness, and hardening, some major causes of heart disease and stroke.
According to the free radical theory, overexpression of cholesterol also increases the risk of lipid peroxidation, leading to the onset of various diseases.
Dr, Yagi K, at the Institute of Applied Biochemistry in the analysis of the lipid peroxides and human diseases, said, "The lipid peroxidation (LPO) products are highly reactive and display marked biological effects, which, depending upon their concentration, cause selective alterations in cell signaling, protein and DNA damage, and cytotoxicity"
And. "Increased formation of lipid peroxides and aldehydes has been observed in atherosclerosis, ischemia-reperfusion, heart failure, Alzheimer’s disease, rheumatic arthritis, cancer, and other immunological disorders".
The findings clearly suggested that your risk of diseases is increased substantially if you have abnormally high blood cholesterol.
Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.
The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine for as liver protective and detoxified agents, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.
Researchers on the finding a natural therapeutics for the treatment of abnormal blood cholesterol, researchers examined artichoke leaf extract (ALE) activity in lowering the plasma total and non-HDL cholesterol by increasing fecal excretion of neutral bile acids and sterols.
The study included 64 Golden Syrian hamsters (8 weeks old) fed control diet or a similar diet containing ALE (4.5 g/kg diet) for 6 weeks.
There were no significant changes for total cholesterol, HDL, non-HDL cholesterol triglycerides or fecal neutral sterols and bile acids were after 21 days for ALE-fed animals compared with controls.
However, ALE-fed male hamsters had significantly lower total cholesterol (15%), non-HDL cholesterol (30%) and triglycerides (22%) and female hamsters fed ALE showed reductions of 15% for total cholesterol, 29% for non-HDL cholesterol and 29% for triglycerides compared with controls after 42 days.
Furthermore, the total neutral sterol and bile acid concentrations also increased significantly by 50% and 53% in fecal samples of ALE fed males, and 82.4% and 25% in ALE fed females compared with controls.
Dr. Qiang Z, after taking into account other factors, said, "he ALE lowered hamster plasma cholesterol levels by a mechanism involving the greater excretion of fecal bile acids and neutral sterols after feeding for 42 days".
In order to reveal more information about artichoke anti-high blood cholesterol property, researchers evaluated the effects of artichoke leaf extract (ALE) supplementation (250 mg, 2 b.i.d.) on the lipid pattern,
The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial included 92 overweight subjects with primary mild hypercholesterolemia for 8 weeks.
46 subjects were randomized to supplementation (age: 54.2 ± 6.6 years, body mass index (BMI): 25.8 ± 3.9 kg/m(2), male/female: 20/26) and 46 subjects to placebo (age: 53.8 ± 9.0 years, BMI: 24.8 ± 1.6 kg/m(2), male/female: 21/25).
Artichoke leaf extract (ALE) supplementation was associated with a significant increase in mean high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol (p < 0.001) and in mean change in HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) (p = 0.004).
Moreover, ALE also significantly decreased the mean change in total cholesterol (p = 0.033), low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol (p < 0.001), total cholesterol/HDL ratio (p < 0.001) and LDL/HDL ratio (p < 0.001) comapred to control.
The findings clearly supported the use of artichoke leaf extract ALE for the treatment of patients with mild high blood cholesterol.
Taken altogether, artichoke may be considered a functional formula for the treatment of patients with high blood cholesterol with no side effects, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Andrographis in Reduced Risk and Treatment of Leukemia
Andrographis paniculata is also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka. It has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia,...
A renowned institute study suggested that andrographolide, a major compound isolated from Andrographis may consist potentially therapeutic effects in reduced risk and controlling the progression of leukemia.
Leukemia is the condition of abnormal increase of white blood cells produced by the bone marrow and/or the lymphatic system. Depending on the malignant granulocytes or lymphocytes, leukemia is classified into myelogenous or lymphoblastic leukemia.
According to the joint study lead by the Jining No 1 People's Hospital, andrographolide (Andro) showed to possess antitumor activities against T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) through induced cytotoxicity in tumor and cell apoptosis.
10 μg/mL Andro could significantly induce tumor cells' death, depending on the inhibition of PI3K/AKT pathway in regulating the cell cycle and increased expression of cancer cell apoptosis.
The flavonoid, chemical compounds isolated from the aerial parts of Andrographis paniculata also exhibited antiproliferative effects against human leukemia HL-60 cells with IC50 of 3.50 μM.
Furthermore, the study in the evaluation of the potential effect of andrographolide against three acute promyelocytic leukemia cell line models (HL-60, NB4 and all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA)-resistant NB4-R2, andrographolide was 2- and 3-fold more active in inhibiting the growth of HL-60 and NB4-R2 cells compared with NB4 cells, through cell differentiating activity via a retinoic acid receptor-independent pathway.
In fact, according to Dr. Manikam SD, the lead researcher, andrographolide and its derivatives, apparently demonstrated a novel cell differentiating mechanism with the ability to induce apoptosis.
There is no doubt that Andrographis with a novel mechanism of drug action may be a new candidated therapy for reduced risk and treatment of Leukemia, but a large amount of intake should be taken with care.

Herbal Cascara Sagrada, The Natural Treatment for Asthma and Asthmatic Attacks
Herbal Cascara Sagrada may have a potential and positive effect on reducing the risk and treatment of asthma, according to studies.
Asthma is a medical condition caused by the long-term inflammation of the airways of the lungs with persistent recurring symptoms.
The most common symptoms of asthma including episodes of wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, particularly, shortness of breath can be triggered by exposure to irritants and allergens.
Other airborne substances, such as pollen, dust mites, mold spores, pet dander or particles of cockroach waste and the common cold are also found to trigger symptoms of the condition.
Epidemiological studies, family history, viral respiratory infections, smoking, exposure to irritants, environment air pollution and allergy are some most common prevalent risk factors of the disease.
However, out of all the risk factors, some researchers suggested that widespread obesity is one of the common causes of asthma in the Western world.
Dr. E. Rand Sutherland, at the National Jewish Medical and Research Center and University of Colorado, said, " Data from the 1999-2002 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) indicate that 65 percent of U.S. adults ≥ 20 years of age are overweight or obese [41], a 10% increase when compared with the 1988-94 period".
And, "Although asthma affects a smaller proportion of the U.S. population than does obesity, and while recent data suggest asthma prevalence may not be increasing as rapidly as in the past, the age-adjusted asthma prevalence of 7.9% reported based on 2005 National Health Interview Survey data [1] is more than twice that reported in 1984-1986 National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey data".
These results provided strong evidence in linking the convergence of secular trends of the increased prevalence of both obesity and asthma.
Cascara sagrada is a species of buckthorn, genus Rhamnus, belonging to the family Rhamnaceae, native to western North America.
The herbal bark has been used in traditional medicine for gastrointestinal support. and it is thought to have a laxative and natural cleansing, etc.
Besides the main compound of anthraquinones, other compounds of herbal Cascara Sagrada include anthraquinone glycosides, (emodin, frangulin, iso-emodin, aloe-emodin, and chrysophanol), rhein, aloin, malic acid, tannic acid, cascarosides A, B, C, and D, and hydroxy anthracene derivatives (HAD), etc.
Scientists on finding a natural anti-asthma compound with no side effects examined the anti-inflammatory effects of emodin (1,3,8-trihydroxy-6-methylanthraquinone), a naturally occurring anthraquinone derivative isolated from roots and barks of numerous plants, such as herbal Cascara Sagrada, molds, and lichens.
Injection of emodin displayed significant activity in the inhibition of asthma symptoms through anti-inflammatory effects.
In order to reveal more inflammation-related to the effects of herbal Cascara Sagrada against asthma, researchers examined anthraquinone, another bioactive compound isolated from herbal medicine.
In allergic mice infected with RV1B inducing an exacerbation, anthraquinone treatment reduced the expression of proteins associated with the immune response and cellular and molecular mechanisms driving asthma pathophysiology.
Furthermore, injection of the bioactive compound also exerted a decrease of airway inflammation involved stimulating the vascular angiogenesis, permeability, and remodeling and ameliorating the allergen- and RV-induced airways hyperreactivity.
Moreover, Anthraquinones also inhibited airway inflammation by decreasing the white blood cell and cytokine/chemokine expression, mucus hypersecretion, and protein associated with the overexpression of the immune response.
Additionally, anthraquinones also boosted the cytokines which play a crucial role in protecting the airway by initiating inflammatory responses through inducing recruitment and activation of immune cells.
Dr. and colleagues wrote in the final report, "Non-cytotoxic anthraquinone derivatives may be of therapeutic benefit for the treatment of severe and RV-induced asthma".
Taken altogether, herbal Cascara Sagrada may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of asthma.

Herbal Artichoke, the Anti Skin Cancer Herbal Remedy
Scientists may have found a natural whole food for the treatment of skin cancer with no side effects, according to studies.
Skin cancer is a medical condition caused by cell growth irregularly in the skin tissue. Most cases of skin cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the skin due to the alternation of DNA.
The causes of skin cancer are unknown. However, researchers do know that personal and family history, fair skin, long-term exposure sun UVB are some prevalent risk factors of the disease.
In the Western world, the common factor linking a person to skin cancer is cumulative sun exposure induced basal cell and squamous cell skin cancer.
According to the statistics, approximately 90 percent of nonmelanoma skin cancers are associated with exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun and basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common form of skin cancer.
In the US, sadly to say that approximately 4.3 million cases of BCC are diagnosed each year, causing the death of 3000 people.
Believe it or not, more people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the U.S. than all other cancers combined.
Dr. Caroline Chang, in the concerns of widespread, nake skin exposure to the sun in the Summer in the risk of skin cancer, wrote, "Although personal melanoma risk factors are well established,... The desire to be tan, which has its roots in the medical profession, retains its popularity today despite evidence linking UV exposure to skin cancer".
The findings strongly suggested that the general public although it has been warned that UV exposure is associated with skin cancer risk but some most people still have a desire to be tan.
Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.
The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.
On finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of skin cancer with no side effects, researchers investigated the methanol extract of the flowers of artichoke (Cynara cardunculus) exhibited remarkable antitumor activity in an in vivo two-stage carcinogenesis test in mice.
Mice selected for the study were induced skin cancer by the injection of 12-O-tetradecanoyl phorbol-13-acetate (TPA).
The active fraction of the methanol extract including four triterpene alcohols and their corresponding acetates showed inhibitory effects on TPA-induced inflammation (1 microg/ear) with a 50% inhibitory dose of 0.50-0.91 micromol/ear.
Furthermore, the anti-skin cancer activity of 2 taraxastane-type hydroxy triterpenes, taraxasterol and faradiol, isolated from the flowers of Compositae plants Cynara scolymus (artichoke) and Chrysanthemum morifilolium (chrysanthemum), also demonstrated a similar effect in the previous study against 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-induced inflammation in mice.
More precisely, these compounds inhibited the tumor-promoting effect of TPA (1 microgram/mouse) on skin tumor formation following initiation with 7,12-dimethylbenz[alpha]anthracene (50 micrograms/mouse).
Taken altogether, artichoke processed numbers of the bioactive compound may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of skin cancer, pending to the results from larger sample size and multicenter human study.
