Herbal Cleaver(Galium aparine) Protects the Bone Density

Bone health is measured by bone mineral density which has a direct influence on the risk of osteoporosis and fractures.

There are numbers of bone diseases, including include osteoporosis, rickets, osteomalacia, osteogenesis imperfecta, marble bone disease (osteopetrosis), Paget disease of bone, and fibrous dysplasia.

And osteoporosis is the most frequent occurrence in the aging population.

Osteoporosis is a bone disease characterized by the inability of the body to produce bone to make up bone loss, leading the loss of bone density over a long period of time.

People with low bone density are susceptible to fracture, break from a fall due to bone weakening.

The exact causes of osteoporosis are unknown. However, researchers do know that certain preventable risk factors such as smoking, low calcium intake, physical inactivity, excessive alcohol consumption and unpreventable risk factors such as aging, family history, genders, race, body frame size,... and sedentary works are associated to increase the onset of the disease.

It is a widespread degenerative disease of skeletal joints and often associated with senescence invertebrates due to excessive or abnormal mechanical loading of weight-bearing joints, arising from heavy long-term use or specific injuries.

If you experience symptoms of lower back pain, loss of height over time, a stooped posture, easy bone fracture, neck and back pain,..., you may have osteoporosis.

Truly, bone diseases affected normal growth and development can lead to weakness and/or deformity.

The causes of bone diseases may be associated with genetic abnormalities, nutritional deficiencies, hormonal disorders, infections, cancers..... and other conditions.

According to the general belief and the recommendation of health researchers, good diet and physical exercise may play an important role in skeletal mass at the end of adolescence and these bone mass remain as the conservation of it during adult life(1).

Attending normal exercise and intake of bone enhancing food at young adult life may protect ourselves against the risk of bone diseases as we age.

Cleaver is a herbaceous annual plant, genus Galium, belonging to the family Rubiaceae, native to North America and Eurasia. The herb has been used over thousands of years in herbal and traditional medicine as mild diuretic and blood and lymphatic cleanser and to treat psoriasis, skin conditions, glands, tonsillitis, bladder infections, prevent small kidney stone, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with the loss of bone
density, researchers investigated hot component p-hydroxycinnamic acid (HCA) found abundantly in herbal cleaver effect on bone formation and an inhibitory effect on bone resorption in rat femoral tissues in vitro.

The study included diabetes rats induced bone loss by a single subcutaneous administration of STZ (6.0 mg/100 g body weight), following by orally administered HCA (0.25, 0.5, or 1.0 mg/100 g body weight) once daily for 14 days.

Before treatment with HCA, STZ administration showed a significant decrease in body weight and parameters associated with diabetes, including the increase in serum glucose, triglyceride, and calcium levels.

However, the alterations were significantly prevented by the administration of HCA (0.25, 0.5, or 1.0 mg/100 g).
Furthermore, bone density loss was also found in the STZ-diabetic rats observed by the significantly lower calcium content in the femoral-diaphyseal and -metaphyseal tissues which were also prevented after administration of HCA (0.25, 0.5, or 1.0 mg/100 g).

Moreover, the decline of the levels of Alkaline phosphatase activity associated with bone formation in the diaphyseal and metaphyseal tissues in STZ-diabetic rats was significantly prevented after the administration of HCA (0.5 and 1.0 mg/l00 g).

Additionally, administration of HCA (0.25, 0.5, or 1.0 mg/100 g) caused a significant increase in DNA content in the diaphyseal and metaphyseal tissues that were significantly decreased in STZ-diabetic rats.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " the intake of HCA has preventive effects on bone loss in STZ-diabetic rats, and that the intake has partially restorative effects on serum biochemical findings in the diabetic state".

Taken altogether, herbal cleaver processed a high amount of HCA may be considered an anti bone loss remedy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) Inhibits the Progression of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)

Arthritis, one of the Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) degenerative disease, is a general term of joint inflammation, affecting over 21% of the US population.

There are over 100 different forms of arthritis and related diseases. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), is the common form of arthritis involved in chronic low-grade inflammation.

Juvenile arthritis is an inflammatory disease affecting the synovium in children aged 16 or younger.

In other words, it is an autoimmune disorder caused by the immune system attacks some of the body's own healthy cells and tissues, in this case, the immune system attacks the joint tissue in the juvenile.

that are associated with the risk of juvenile idiopathic arthritis include HLA-A. HLA-B. HLA-DPB1. HLA-DQA1. HLA-DQB1. HLA-DRB1. IL2RA. IL6, according to the National Institute of Health.

According to the statistic, the most common form of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), affects over 50,000 children in the United States alone.

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a type of arthritis associated with inflammation that affects mostly the flexible (synovial) joints and tissues and organs in the body.

The disease affects more women than men and generally occurs after the ages of 40, causing the diminished quality of life of many older adults.

According to the CDC, musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) affect over 52 million adults in the US alone, including 294,000 children under age 18 with some form of arthritis or rheumatic conditions.

Rheumatoid Arthritis can induce bone loss through elevating bone resorption without increasing bone formation.

A cross-sectional population-based study of 1042 patients with rheumatoid arthritis showed that RA patients had an increased risk of death from various causes.

Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, and heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases, scientists examined taraxasterol (TAR), a bioactive active compound pentacyclic triterpenes isolated from Chinese medicine herb Taraxacum officinale effects on rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

In Vitro and Vivo, the application of TRA significantly suppressed the proteins involved in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, namely tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), IL-6, and IL-8 by blocking NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasomes, activators of IL-1β secretion, particularly in the joints tissues of collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) mice.

Furthermore, the application of TRA also inhibited the enzymes involved in the productions of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), like MMP-1 and MMP-3 in HFLS-RA in vitro, degradation of the normal tissues.

Moreover, the injection of TRA also blocked nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) activation via modulating inhibitors of kappa B (IκB), IκB kinase (IKK) in the control of cytokines production and cell survival and transforming growth factor-β-activated kinase 1 (TAK1) to prevent the accumulation of ROS, resulting in cell death and inflammation.

Taken altogether, dandelion may be considered a remedy for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Cramp Bark(Viburnum opulus), the Natural and Potential Gastroduodenoprotective Remedy

The digestive system included the gastrointestinal tract, the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder play a critical role to maintain the body normal function by providing nutrients and fluids to the body and remove waste through the secretary system.

The gastric mucosa is the mucous membrane layer of the stomach that plays a critical role in providing physical protection against ingested particles and preventing the contact between digestive enzymes such as pepsin and the underlying mucosa.

On the other hand, the gastric mucosal barrier protects the stomach against gastric acid that is required for digestion.

Dr, Lawson HH. in the classification of the different histologic types of the normal human duodenal mucosa suggested that there are antral type-duodenal mucosa, the transitional-type duodenal mucosa, and the jejunal-type duodenal mucosa.

The three different types of mucosa vary in their degree of susceptibility to the effect of acid hypersecretion, leading to duodenitis and gastritis and worsens the condition of ulcer.

The function of duodenum mucosa is to increase its surface area that contacts with chyme passing through the intestinal lumen and improves the absorption of nutrients.

Abnormal duodenal mucosa can lead to acute and chronic duodenal ulcers.

Cramp Bark is an ornamental plant, genus Viburnum, belonging to the family Adoxaceae, native to Europe and Asia. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as anti-spasmodic, anti-inflammatory, nervine. hypotensive agent and to treat menstrual cramps and pain, afterbirth, postpartum pains, excessive blood loss in periods, bleeding associated with the menopause, etc.

On finding a potential herbal medicine for the protection of the digestive function, researchers examined the gastrointestinal mucosal defense mechanisms of proanthocyanidins (PA), the polymers of flavan-3-ols, isolated from the Viburnum opulus (VOPA, Caprifoliaceae).

According to the tested assays of rats exposed to non-topical ulcerogens (stress) without and with capsaicin (125 mg/kg, sc) denervation, VOPA showed strong effects in the promotion of the gastroduodenal mucosal integrity and pattern, observed by the carbohydrate-binding proteins and nitric oxide (NO) content that protects the intact mucosa.

The levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the tested rats such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were also significantly higher in the VOPA group at doses of 25, 50 or 75 mg/kg body weight.

In other words, VOPA inhibited lipid peroxidation by enhancing the production of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "VOPA exerts a potent gastroduodenoprotective activity via an increase in endogenous NO generation, suppression of lipid peroxidation and mobilization of antioxidant activity and changes in glycoconjugate content of the gastroduodenal mucosa of rats".

Taken altogether, cramp bark(Viburnum opulus) may process the gastroduodenoprotective effects, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Angelica Processes Neuro-Protective Activity

Neuroprotection is a process to preserve the neuronal structure and/or function against the death or gradual death of neurons, including the use of medicines and herbs.

In other words, neuroprotection protects the neuronal integrity against the reduction in the rate of neuronal loss over time inducing neurological disease, including neurodegenerative disease.

Brain ischemia is a condition caused by insufficient blood flow to the brain to meet metabolic demand, leading to irreversible brain damage in severe cases.

In other words, brain ischemia-induced the death of neurons of the affected tissues.

Brain ischemia can be classified into
* Focal ischemia is a condition caused by damage to a specific region of the brain; and

* Global ischemia is a condition of damage that affects the wide areas of brain tissue, leading to symptoms of impairments in vision, body movement, and speaking.

Dr. Jin-Moo Lee in the study of the issues of how the brain tissue responses to ischemia, said, "The brain is particularly vulnerable to ischemia. Complete interruption of blood flow to the brain for only 5 minutes triggers the death of vulnerable neurons in several brain regions, whereas 20–40 minutes of ischemia is required to kill cardiac myocytes or kidney cells".

And, "...the brain’s intrinsic cell-cell and intracellular signaling mechanisms, normally responsible for information processing, become harmful under ischemic conditions, hastening energy failure and enhancing the final pathways underlying ischemic cell death in all tissues, including free radical production, activation of catabolic enzymes, membrane failure, apoptosis, and inflammation".

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the protection of the brain, researchers examined the neuroprotective effects of Xixian Tongshuan Preparation containing Ligusticum chuanxiong, Angelica Sinensis, Carthamus tinctorius, and Panax pseudo-ginseng.

According to chemical analysis, all constituents found in the formula work synergistically to protect the neurons against damage.

Furthermore, the formula inhibited the 5 glutamate receptors, TGFR-1, and VEGFR-2 in the mediation of the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines to induce neuron death and injury.

Moreover, a single component, such as neo-complanatoside and neo-carthamin, in Xixian Tongshuan Preparation could simultaneously act on different targets to exert their neuroprotective effects.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "This study explains the multi-target mechanism of anti-cerebral ischemic injury in neuroprotection at the molecular level, and provides a certain direction for the clinical application and experimental research of Xixian Tongshuan Preparation".

Taken altogether, herbal Angelica in combination with other herbal medicines that may be considered a neuroprotective remedy, pending to larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Turmeric, the Hepatoprotective Functional Remedy

Hepatoprotection is the action including the use of a substance such as herbal remedy to protect the liver against damage and injury.

Antihepatotoxicity is the ability that protects the liver against toxins.

Acute liver diseases in most cases are caused by drugs and long-term intake of certain medications. Most acute liver disease can be cured if the cause is found.

Chronic liver diseases (CLD) are liver diseases that last more than 6 months. Most chronic liver diseases are caused by a genetic preposition or a variety of factors that damage the liver, including viruses and alcohol use.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the most common liver diseases in the world affecting 25% of the general population most of them in the Western world.

Some researchers suggested that the use of substances to protect the liver may involve several mechanisms, including strengthening the liver, gastrointestinal and immune system.

Dr. C. Girish, the lead scientists in the discussion of hepatoprotective effect, wrote, " The regulation of gastrointestinal system may improve the general well-being of the patients, as well as improvement of constipation, may prevent the absorption of harmful substances and indirectly decrease ascites (Langmead and Rampton, 2001). The protection of liver cells against toxic materials including drugs, lipid peroxidation, and free radical injury may decrease inflammation, improve liver blood flow, and ultimately help in the reduction of ascites and blood pressure (Yang et al., 2000)".

In other words, herbal medicine expressed liver protection not only by improving the blood flow to the liver but also through regulating the gastrointestinal system against the building up toxins in the induction of free radicals and suppressing the normal function of the liver and improving the immune system against inflammation-induced the lipid oxidation.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
On finding a potential ingredient for the protection of liver integrity, researchers examined curcumin, the active ingredient of turmeric therapeutic potential for the treatment of liver disorders.

Application of curcumin showed a liver protective activity by inhibiting the liver toxicity caused by long-term excessive alcohol drinking and acetaminophen, lindane, carbon tetrachloride (CCL4), diethylnitrosamine.

Furthermore, curcumin also restored the liver functioning in heavy metals induced hepatotoxicities models.

In the nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), the most common causes of the chronic liver disease model, researchers examined the Bisdemethoxycurcumin (BDMC), a polyphenolic compound derived from the Curcumae Longae Rhizoma liver protective activity.

The study included C57BL/6J mice divided into five groups of normal (normal diet without any treatment), methionine choline deficient (MCD)-diet (MCD diet only), MCD + silymarin (SIL) 100 mg/kg group, MCD + BDMC 100 mg/kg group, MCD + SIL 50 mg/kg + BDMC 50 mg/kg group.

BDMC protected the liver against fatty change compared to severe hepatic fatty accumulation in the MCD- diet group.

BDMC increased liver function significantly, compared to that of the loss of liver function in the MCD-diet group.

Most importantly, BDMC showed an inhibitory effect on liver lipogenesis by reducing associated gene expression caused by the MCD-diet.

Moreover, combinations of BDMC with SIL had a synergistic effect against MCD-diet models.

Based on the findings, Dr. Kim SB, the lead scientists said, "our findings indicate that BDMC has a potential suppressive effect on NAFLD. Therefore, our data suggest that BDMC may act as a novel and potent therapeutic agent against NAFLD".

Taken altogether, turmeric and its bioactive compound curcumin may be considered a remedy for the improvement of liver functioning, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Dandelion(Taraxacum officinale), the Potential and Natural Anti-Inflammatory Remedy

Inflammation is the natural response of the immune system macrophages, the first line of defense in stimulating the production of inflammatory cytokines to protect our body against the infection caused by foreign microorganisms during the acute phase of body damage and injury.

Truly, the main focus of inflammation is to repair damage and injury.

Most cases of infection associated with inflammation are stopped at the acute phase. The wound or injury is slowly recovered.

However, overexpression of inflammatory cytokines in most cases can cause improper healing with scar formation or the death of nearby cells.

Any inflammation that lasts more than 3 months is considered chronic inflammation.

Chronic inflammation is the result of the immune system's inability to kill off all the microorganisms participated in the acute phase of infection, leading to the forming of autoimmune and chronic inflammatory diseases such as RA and diabetes.

Inflammation also can be caused by overexpression of free radicals compared to the antioxidant enzymes in the body. This result can lead to an imbalance of the ratio of the levels of free radicals and antioxidants, the major cause of oxidative stress.

However, people with a weakened immune system, acute inflammatory progression cannot be stopped due to the inability of the immune system to destroy all invaders, which may lead to low-grade chronic inflammation.

Longer-term oxidative stress in the body can also cause oxidative damage to biomolecules, including lipids, proteins, DNA damage.

Anti-inflammation is the process that inhibits inflammation or swelling without affecting the immune property to curb foreign pathogens.

Conventionally, the most common use of anti-inflammatory medicines is over counter aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Nuprin) and other prescription NSAIDs.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with inflammation, scientists examined the mechanisms responsible for the anti-inflammation effects of water extract of T. mongolicum Hand.-Mazz (WETMHM) on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammatory in acute lung injury.

Female BALB/c mice selected to the investigation were randomly divided into five groups with 10 mice in each group: (1) control group (saline), (2) LPS group, (3) LPS+dexamethasone (LPS+Dex, 2mg/kg, administered by gavage), (4) LPS+WETMHM (5 g/kg, administered by gavage), (5) LPS+WETMHM (10 g/kg, administered by gavage).

According to the results from the tested analysis, treatment with the WETMHM exhibited a number of mechanisms against LPS-induced inflammation, including the

* Attenuating inflammation cell numbers in the BALF

* Decreasing the protein levels of lung PI3K/Akt/mTOR, and

* Improving the antioxidant activity of SOD.

* Inhibiting MPO activity associated with inflammation

Furthermore, the histological studies also demonstrated that WETMHM substantially inhibited LPS-induced neutrophils in lung tissue.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, " The results indicated that the WETMHM had a protective effect on LPS-induced ALI in mice".

Taken altogether, dandelion may be considered a remedy for the treatment of diseases associated with inflammation, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Green Tea and Its polyphenol (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate EGCG Kill Over 84% of Endometrial Cancer Cells, Scientists Reveal

Scientists may have found a popular beverage that processes a significant effect in reducing risk and treatment of endometrial cancer, according to some studies.

Endometrial cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth uncontrollably in the endometrium.

At the late stage, the cancerous cell may travel a distance away from the original site to infect other organs and tissues.

Some researchers suggested that endometrial cancer is not caused by a single factor but a number of conditions.

Women who have a persistent irregular ovulation pattern due to conditions of polycystic ovary syndrome, obesity, and diabetes are associated with a higher risk of the disease.

The risk of endometrial cancer is also increased in women who are taking hormone therapy after menopause, containing estrogen.

The most common symptoms are persistently abnormal vaginal bleeding. If you are experiencing some of the above symptoms, you should see your doctor right the way to rule out the possibility.

The early stage of endometrial cancer is treated successfully by surgery, including removing the uterus.

Green tea, a precious drink which processed numbers of health benefit is known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

In the experiment of green tea bioactive compounds against the progression of tumor xenografts of human endometrial cancer, researchers found that (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate EGCG demonstrates a significant effect in reduced risk of endometrial cancer development through the bioactive chemicals anti-tumor angiogenesis properties.

In fact, the anti-cancer active compound efficacy was attributed to the modulation of expression of vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) protein in the established new vessel to stimulate the onset of cancer and cancer cell proliferation and HIF-1 functions in the activated transcription of many genes, that regulate cellular and systemic homeostatic response to external changes to tumor growth.

Furthermore, application of EGCG also suppressed responses of chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 12 (CXCL12) in expression of multiple physiological processes, promoted invasion and metastasis of tumor cells in connected tissues of the uterine mucosa (endometrium), thus reducing the infiltration of VEGFA-expressing tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) in supplying rapidly growing malignant tissues with essential nutrients and oxygen.

Additionally, further analysis also insisted that EGCG restricted secretion of vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA)  initiated endometrial cancer growth by inhibiting the function of PI3K/AKT/mTOR/HIF1α pathway in the regulation of many cellular processes, including cell survival, proliferation, and growth.

After taking account all findings, treatment with EGCG reduced risk of endometrial cancer onset may be results of EGCG suppressed secretion in both fronts, the decreased cancer cell-secreted VEGFA and inhibited TAM-secreted VEGFA in endometrial cancer progression.

Further differentiation, also showed that green tea polyphenol (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate reduced cancer expansion by suppressing the expression of proliferation markers which act indirectly to stimulate endometrial epithelial proliferation in estrogen receptor α, progesterone receptor, proliferating cell nuclear antigen and cyclin D1.

The overexpression of cyclin D1 has linked to the development and progression of cancer.

The proliferating cell nuclear antigen is a protein with the function of cell cycle regulation and/or DNA replication and DNA synthesis and DNA repair.

Importantly, the inhibition of EGCG also decreased the activation of ERK, the extracellular signal-regulated kinases protein in cancer cell division and down the expression of transcription factors fos and jun, the cellular immediate-early genes in the induced transient cancer cell division and differentiation processes.

The function of EGCG in reduced risk of endometrial cancer also expressed through Bcl-2-associated X protein, cleavage of caspase-3 and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase actions in the induction of cancer cell apoptosis and suppression of antiapoptotic protein Bcl-2 (B-cell lymphoma 2).

Bcl-2-associated X is a protein with the function of anti- or pro-apoptotic regulators involved in a wide variety of cellular activities.

B-cell lymphoma 2, a family protein with a function in the regulation of cell apoptosis.

Cleavage of caspase-3 also is known as a critical executioner of apoptosis,

Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase is a protein with function involved in a number of cellular processes, including programmed cell death.

Implicitly, application of EGCG also increased production of free radical expression in the initiated cytotoxic effect by reducing levels of antioxidant glutathione levels and activating the p38 in the induction of cancer cells death without inducing toxicity to normal cells

P38 mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) are activated by a wide range of cellular stresses in the response to inflammatory cytokines involved in cell differentiation, apoptosis, and autophagy.

Indeed, according to a systematic review of literature published on database of PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library and China Biological Medicine Database up to February 2, 2015, researchers indicated that green tea consumption is associated with a reduced risk of EC (relative risk of .78) and each additional cup of green tea consumed per day decreased risk of developing EC by 11%.

Particularly, the intake of green tea associated with the attenuated risk of endometrial cancer was 84.33% compared to 5.07 % of black tea.

Taken together, green tea and its polyphenol (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate EGCG may be considered a functional food used conjunction with standard therapy in reducing risk and treatment of endometrial cancer.
