Chaste Tree berry may be used as a functional food in regulated production of progesterone in balancing steroid hormone in women menstrual cycle, a renowned institute study suggested
Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, used in herbal medicine for thousands of years as an aphrodisiac herb and considered as Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts.
Progesterone is a sex hormone with various mechanisms, including women's menstrual cycle, pregnancy, embryogenesis......
According to the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology-University, Vitex may have a function similar to the conventional medicine, fluoxetine, in stimulated production of increasing mid-luteal progesterone and 17β-oestradiol levels in women menstrual cycle.
In the review of databases of 8 literature collection, Vitex extracts showed a significant effect in women's health. In the aspect of premenstrual syndrome, the extract improves psychological symptoms such as depression, anxiety,... through progesterone regulation.
Dr. Deborah Brauser, the author of the article of "Progesterone, Anxiety Affect Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder" said, "As a gynecologist, I believe PMDD is driven by the female sex hormone progesterone," said Dr. Sundström Poromaa, adding that there is very little progesterone during the follicular phase".
Flavonoid glycosides, orientin and apigenin 3, 8-di-C-glycosides in addition to iridoid compound, aucubin isolated from the ethanolic extract of Vitex agnus-castus fruits, also displayed an increased production of progesterone hormone by observation of plasma progesterone of women with 0.6 and 1.2 g kg(-1) per body weight (b.w.) doses.
The study also addressed the hormone progesterone may have a directed effect in increased uterine weight of ovariectomized rats in comparison to that of the control group.
Dr. Jillian Stansbury, the researcher of the women herbs for men said, "Consumption of Vitex fruits by female chimpanzees as part of their natural diets has been found to dramatically increase progesterone levels in the urine, indicating an overall progesterone effect.34 One hypothesis is that reduced LH allows the follicle-stimulating hormone to dominate and can lead to decreased estrogen and testosterone and a relative increase in progesterone".
Furthermore, the contribution of the herb in the improved concentration of progesterone in the luteal phase, may increase the chance of pregnancy, as the total of 37 women with oligomenorrhea and 30 women with amenorrhea received 50 drops of Phyto Hypophyson L, a Vitex agnus castus-containing homeopathic preparation or placebo 3 times a day over 3 months or 3 cycles report.
Promisingly, intake of the Vitex agnus castus-containing homeopathic preparation expressed spontaneous menstruation, improved concentration of progesterone in the luteal phase, shortening of the cycle, earlier ovulation, and pregnancy in 38 out of 67 women.
Taking together, chemical constituents found in Chaste tree berry expressed a strong activity in an increased chance of pregnancy and normalized hormone aspects in women menstrual cycle with progesterone and other hormones regulation.

Herbal Comfrey(Symphytum officinale L.) Promotes Bone Density in Vivo
Bone is a hard whitish tissue making up the skeleton in humans which provides a framework for the attachment of muscles and other tissues.
Bone density is the amount of bone mineral in bone tissue. Loss of bone density is found to induce osteoporosis.
Bone density is measured by the young adult bone density mean within 1 standard deviation (+1 or −1). The negative T-score is an indication of loss or lower bone density and the T-score of −2.5 or lower is an indication of osteoporosis.
Risk factors of losing bone density include gender, (women are more likely to develop osteoporosis compared to men) the increase in age, race, (African Americans have both lower rates of bone density loss and osteoporosis), family history.
People with low bone mass accompanied by progressive bone density loss over time are associated with an increased risk of developing osteoporosis.
Low bone mass is a risk factor of osteoporosis, The condition may also increase the incidence of bone fracture if it is accompanied by other risk factors.
Osteoporosis is a condition of thinning of bone and bone tissues as a result of the loss of bone density over a long period of time.
It is a widespread degenerative disease of skeletal joints and often associated with senescence in the vertebrates due to excessive or abnormal mechanical loading of weight-bearing joints, arising from heavy long-term use or specific injuries.
If you experience symptoms of lower back pain, loss of height over time, a stooped posture, easy bone fracture, neck and back pain,..., you may have osteoporosis.
Truly, bone diseases in children have been found to affect normal growth and development that can lead to weakness and/or deformity.
Comfrey is a perennial plant in the genus of Symphytum, belonging to the family Boraginaceae, native to Europe. It has been used in herbal and traditional medicine to ease excessive bleeding or on open wounds, relieve pain and swollen, treat circulation issues, reduce cholesterol, etc.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of osteoporosis, researchers investigated the effect of Symphytum officinale (Comfrey) in homeopathic potency (6cH), on the removal torque and radiographic bone density around titanium implants, inserted in rats tibiae.
Selected rats induced loss of bone density in the study were randomized into a group of control and group treated by S. officinale 6cH.
According to the evaluation at 7, 14, 28, and 56 days post-implantation, removal torque of the implants rats treated the S. Officinale 6cH showed to enhance bone formation around the micro-implants at 14 days.
At 56 days, the radiographic bone density was higher in the treated group, compared to control.
Based on the findings, researchers said, " S. Officinale 6cH enhances, principally at the early stages of osseointegration, bone formation around titanium implants in rats' tibiae, based on the radiographic and mechanical analysis.".
Taken altogether, Comfrey combined with other herbal medicine may be considered a remedy for the promotion of bone density, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Angelica Improves the Mitochondrial Functioning
Mitochondria are power generators of the cell found abundantly in the liver and play a critical role in converting oxygen and nutrients to energy for the cell's metabolisms.
Mitochondrial permeability transition (MPT) and the mitochondrial generation of oxidative stress have been found to initiate hepatic mitochondrial dysfunction caused by hepatocellular necrosis and apoptosis.
Where, the protein mitochondrial permeability transition pore is formed in the inner membrane of the mitochondria under certain pathological conditions, including stroke, leading to symptoms of lethargy, hypotonia, vomiting, poor suck, and seizures.
Mitochondria bioenergetics play a critical for normal cell function and human health. The alternation of mitochondrion DNA has been found to induce a number of diseases.
More precisely, the genetic proposition has been found to alter the process of mitochondria in converting oxygen and food to energy in some people. Acquired mitochondrial dysfunction has been found in patients with Alzheimer’s disease, muscular dystrophy, Lou Gehrig’s disease, diabetes, and cancer. including mitochondrial myopathy, diabetes mellitus, and deafness.
Most common symptoms of mitochondrial dysfunction include poor growth muscle weakness, muscle pain, low muscle tone, exercise intolerance, vision and/or hearing problems
learning disabilities, delays in development, mental retardation depending on the location of the infected cells.
According to the statistics, 1 in 5,000 individuals has a genetic mitochondrial disease. Each year, about 1,000 to 4,000 children in the United States are born with mitochondrial disease.
Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.
The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.
On finding a natural compound for the treatment of diseases associated with mitochondrial dysfunction, the researchers examined the effects of Danggui Buxue Tang (DBT) on mitochondrial respiration of cultured H9C2 cardiomyoblasts.
According to the chemical analysis, DBT exerted a strong antioxidant and radical scavenging activity against oxidative stress, and protective effect in tert-butyl hydroperoxide (tBHP)-treated cultured cardiomyoblast.
Furthermore, the transcript expressions of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator 1-alpha (PCG-1α) and other genes, relating to mitochondria biogenesis were enhanced by the injection of the decoction.
Moreover, cultured cardiomyoblasts showed an improvement of total status under DBT treatment through a number of mechanisms, including an increase of basal respiration, proton leak, non-mitochondria, and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production by stimulating the mitochondrial biogenesis and DNA replication
Taken altogether, Herbal Angelica may protect the mitochondrial functioning, pending to larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bromelain Kills Gastrointestinal Cancer Cells in Vitro
Gastrointestinal cancer is a medical and chronic condition caused by the alternation of cell DNA in the gastrointestinal tract including the esophagus, stomach, biliary system, pancreas, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, and anus.
Most cases of gastrointestinal cancer begin in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the gastrointestinal tissue, before penetrating into the deeper layers.
The most common gastrointestinal cancer is gastric cancer, which is the fourth most commonly occurring cancer in men and the seventh most commonly occurring cancer in women.
According to worldwide statistics, over 1 million new cases were diagnosed in 2018 with the South Korean leading the map, second to Mongolia.
In other words, if you are Asain, you are at an increased risk of gastric cancer.
At the advanced stage, the cancer cell of the affected tissues can travel a distance away to infect the other tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.
Epidemiologically, primary gastrointestinal cancer is more likely to spread to the stomach, esophageal cancer, breast cancer, renal cell carcinoma, and ovarian cancer.
Most common symptoms of gastrointestinal cancer include
* Throw up blood with the color of coffee grounds. if the bleeding cancer is located in the esophagus or stomach
* Black stool if the bleeding cancer is located in the stomach and small intestine.
* Stool red with visible blood if the bleeding cancer is located in the large intestines.
Persistent bleeding to lead anemia due to a large amount of blood loss.
If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms that do heal in a short period of time, you may have gastrointestinal cancer. Please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.
If the bleeding is slow, it often doesn’t cause the person to throw up blood or have a change in their stool. Over time, though, slow bleeding can lead to a low red blood cell count, and make a person feel tired and weak.
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
With an aim to find a natural ingredient against gastrointestinal cancer, researchers examined the effects of bromelain and N-acetylcysteine, the two natural agents' anti-cancer effects.
In gastrointestinal cancer models to cisplatin, paclitaxel, 5-fluorouracil, and vincristine, a combination of bromelain and N-acetylcysteine with chemotherapeutic agents could give rise to an improved chemotherapeutic index.
In other words, chemo drugs used combined with bromelain and N-acetylcysteine are more effective in the inhibition of gastrointestinal cancer with lesser toxicity.
Furthermore, combined with bromelain and N-acetylcysteine also reduced the doses of chemo drugs used with the same efficacy.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "This represents a potentially efficacious strategy for the enhancement of microscopic cytoreduction".
Moreover, in the examination of the effects of bromelain (BR) and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) on MUC2 and MUC5AC which have been found to significantly contribute to the biology and pathogenesis of mucin-secreting gastrointestinal tumors, researchers found that in vitro (MKN45, KATOIII and LS174T cell lines) and in vivo (female nude mice bearing intraperitoneal MKN45 and LS174T), a combination of BR and NAC with dual effects on growth and mucin products of mucin-expressing tumor cells.
More precisely, the treatment of the combination of BR and NAC protected the gastric cells against the malignancies with the involvement of mucin pathology.
Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Majority of Women Chose Cinnamon Over Acetaminophen in Relieved Menstrual Pain and Heavy Menstrual Bleeding, According PubMed
Topical use of essential oil extracted from cinnamon may be the next generation whole herb medicine for prevention and treatment of menstrual pain and heavy menstrual bleeding.
The results of the investigation were reported by several respectable institutes and published on the data bases of numbers online medical literature, including PubMed.
According to the Eulji University, in the study of compared the effect of aromatherapy massage and acetaminophen on menstrual pain in Korean high school girls. cinnamon treatment group showed a significantly higher reduction of menstrual pain than in the acetaminophen group.
Acetaminophen or APAP is a over-counter and popular conventional medicine used to treat pain and fever with numbers of intolerant adverse effects.
In a randomized, double-blind trial, out of 114, group received Cinnamon (capsule containing 420 mg Cinnamon, TDS, n= 38) in 24 h significantly reduced the severity and duration of pain during menstruation and menstrual bleeding.
In primary dysmenorrhea, cinnamon expressed significantly over the reduction of pain, menstrual bleeding, nausea, and vomiting with primary dysmenorrhea without side effects.
Dr. Marzouk TM., the lead author at the Mansoura University said, " ... aromatherapy abdominal massage once daily for seven days prior to menstruation using the essential oils (cinnamon....) is effective in alleviating menstrual pain, its duration and excessive menstrual bleeding...." and "Aromatherapy can be provided as a nonpharmacological pain relief measure and as a part of nursing care given to girls suffering from dysmenorrhea, or excessive menstrual bleeding".
Further study of the effect of cinnamon extract on symptoms of dysmenorrhea and contractility in some smooth muscles, Dr. Alotaibi M. suggested, cinnamon may be used to alleviate menstrual pain associated with dysmenorrhoea or prevent unwanted uterine activity in early pregnancy.
However, intake of cinnamon should be taken with care as toxicity was found in the case of overdoses.

Herbal Bilberry, the Natural Treatment for Varicose Veins with No Side Effects
Varicose veins are the medical condition in which the superficial veins have become enlarged and twisted.
The condition has been found to induce bleeding or superficial thrombophlebitis if left untreated.
The most common causes of varicose veins are found just under the skin in the legs, leading to the symptoms of fullness and pain in the affected location accompanied by symptoms of achy or heavy feeling in the legs. The pain is also worsened after a long time of sitting or standing for a long time and skin discoloration around the area.
Some patients with painful varicose veins also experience symptoms of burning, throbbing, muscle cramping, and swelling in the lower legs and itching.
Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of varicose veins, aging due to wear and tear on the valves in the veins that help regulate blood flow may be one of the most common risk factors.
Dr. Caggiati A in the study of age-related variations of varicose veins, wrote, "Varicose SVs were more frequent in the older group (62%) than in younger one (39%) owing to a higher prevalence of limbs with combined saphenous veins (SVs) and Stributaries of the SVs (STVs) varicosities (respectively, 59% and 37%)".
And, "varicose disease may progressively extend in an antegrade fashion, spreading from the STVs to the SVs".
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), researchers compared the efficacy of Pycnogenol, venoruton, troxerutin, the complex diosmin-hesperidin, Antistax, Mirtoselect (bilberry), escin, and the combination Venoruton-Pycnogenol (VE-PY) against the therapeutic compressions.
The study included 1,051 patients who completed the registry. During the experiment, there are no safety or tolerability problems observed.
Mirtoselect (bilberry) showed a significant effect on skin flux but to a lesser extent compared to those of Venoruton, Pycnogenol, and the combination VE-PY.
The edema score was decreased more effectively with the combination and with Pycnogenol compared to the other treatment group including the Mirtoselect (bilberry).
According to the improvement in symptoms score, Pycnogenol and compression showed a larger decrease in oxidative stress compared to the Pycnogenol, Venoruton, Mirtoselect (bilberry), and with the VE-PY combination.
However, the efficacy of Pycnogenol and the combination are competitive with stockings that do not have the same tolerability in warmer climates compared to other groups.
The findings suggested that the tested compounds processed anti chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) and varicose veins properties.
Taken altogether, Mirtoselect (bilberry) may be considered a functioning remedy for the treatment of varicose veins with no side effects, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Chaste Tree Berry Anti Estrogenic Activity
Chaste tree berry(Vitex agnus-castus), is found to process anti-estrogenic property in binding the estrogen receptors for a balance between the activities of estrogen receptor ERα or ERβ.
The herb is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, used in herbal medicine for thousands of years as anaphrodisiac herb and considered as Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts.
Anti estrogenic effects are an act of binding the estrogen receptor(ERα ) and/ERβ in inhibiting the excessive levels of estrogen circulating in the body.
According to the University of Alabama in Huntsville, in the study of the potential effect of estrogen mimics or anti-estrogens in phytochemicals of popular dietary herbal supplements, researchers found that almost all herbal supplements containing phytochemical components showed a capability in binding to the human estrogen receptor and exhibit selective estrogen receptor modulation, including chaste tree berry.
Casticin, a flavonoid isolated from Vitex rotundifolia, significantly expressed anti estrogenic effect in reduced the prolactin release stimulated by E2 in induced inhibition of ERα mRNA expression in a concentration-dependent manner, through its anti estrogenic effect.
In a hyperprolactinemia (MIHP) induced by administration of metoclopramide dihydrochloride (50 mg/kg, tid, ip, for 10 d) in SD rats, rat treated with casticin (10, 20, and 40 mg/kg, ip, for 7 d) reduced serum prolactin levels by 33.9%, 54.3%, and 64.7% and at(1 and 10 micromol/L) inhibited E2-induced pituitary cell proliferation by 27.7% and 42.1%, respectively through reduced levels of 17β-Estradiol (E2) significantly.
More importantly, oral administration of casticin, a flavonoid isolated from Vitex rotundifolia displayed an anti-estrogenic activity in decrease excessive levels of 17β-Estradiol (E2) significantly
Taking together, Chaste tree berry processes strong estrogenic and anti-estrogenic effects in binding estrogen receptor sites to preserve the balancing of hormone expression of estrogen through ER alpha and ERBeta inhibition and exhibition.
