Cinnamon - The Best Whole food Medicine for Reduced Risk of CVD

A recent study suggested that cinnamon expressed a reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases through its antioxidant, chemopreventive, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties.

Heart disease kills more than 2,000 Americans every day. Approximately 60 million Americans have heart disease.

Anything that serves to damage the inner lining of blood vessels and impedes the transportation of oxygen and nutrition to the heart can be defined as a risk of heart disease. Here are some early indication of heart disease symptoms:

Cinnamon is a spice derived from the inner bark of a tree, native to South East Asia, of over 300 species of the genus Cinnamomum, belonging to the familyLauraceae, use in herbal and traditional medicine as anti-fungal and bacteria level to improve reproductive organ, prevent flatulence and intestinal cramping, treat indigestion, diarrhea, bad breath, headache, migraine, etc.

The joint study lead by the North Khorasan University of Medical Sciences, also suggested use of cinnamon for the prevention and treatment of CVD, probably due to its activities in inhibition of metabolic syndrome (MetS), the leading cause of heart diseases.

In support of the above suggestion, some recent studies reaffirm the importance of cinnamon as a spice and maybe a natural remedy to treat cardiovascular diseases.

Furthermore, the intake of cinnamon powder also exerted a beneficial effect on glycaemic control in animals and human models, affecting the progression of metabolic alterations in the early stage of cardiovascular events.

Dr. Deng said, "The hypoglycemic effects of cinnamon and .... were demonstrated in most of the trials with some exceptions" and " Future studies with more defined participants, standardized preparation and dose, and improved trial design and size are warranted".

Taken together, cinnamon may be beneficial for the prevention, management, and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, but the quantity used of cinnamon should only be prescribed by herbalists in the prevention of toxicity.

Herbal Ashwagandha Processes immune-Modulatory Activity

The immune system included the thymus and bone marrow, as well as secondary lymphatic tissues including spleen, tonsils, lymph vessels, lymph nodes, adenoids, skin, and liver, is the body's defense against infectious organisms and foreign invaders.

The immune dysfunction can be classified into
* The underactive immune system is also known as the weakened immune system. People with the underactive immune system are susceptible to infection, recurrent infections.

* The overactive immune system is also known as autoimmune diseases. In this case, patients suffer diseases associated with the immune system that attacks the body tissues.

The immunomodulatory effect is a process in which the immune function is modulated to the needs of the body.

In the acute phase of infection, the immune macrophages, the first line of defense stimulates the production of blood palette to cover the wound or injury and pro-inflammatory cytokines to the site of infection to kill off pathogens before they can enter the body to multiply.

Most cases of infection are stopped at the acute phase, depending on the size and penetration of the wound.

The most common symptoms of acute inflammation occurred with a short period of time such as hours is pain, redness, immobility, swelling, and heat.

Conventionally, depending on the types of acute inflammation, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may be prescribed to alleviate the pain by counteracting an enzyme that contributes to inflammation.

However, if the immune system for whatever reason such as in people with a weakened immune system can not destroy the foreign invaders in the set period of time (3-8 weeks), it will adapt to the new change, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation.

Low-grade inflammation over time has been found to destroy cells and tissues in the affected area or organ, inducing chronic inflammatory disease, including diabetes, arthritis, and cardiovascular disease.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potent compound that modulatory immune response, researchers examined the ashwagandha WS immunomodulatory effect.

According to the searching of the related studies and trials on Databases- DPED, UNPD, PubChem, Binding DB, ChEMBL, KEGG, and STRING, WS immune showed an immunomodulatory capability of regulating 15 immune system pathways.

Additionally, WS also exerted the immunomodulatory effect by targeting16 proteins and protein-protein interactions.

Chemical analysis also suggested that the efficacy WS in immunomodulation was also attributed to
the potential of withanolide-phytosterol combination and seven novel bioactive-immune target combinations.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The study elucidated an in silico molecular mechanism of immunomodulation of WS. It unveils the potential of withanolide-phytosterol combination to achieve better immunomodulation. Experimental validation of the network findings would aid in understanding the rationale behind WS immunomodulation as well as aid in bioactive formulation based drug discovery.".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for immune-modulation, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

Herbal Angelica Sinensis Induced Human Ovarian Cancer Cell Death in Vitro

Cancer is the class of chronic disease caused by irregular cell growth in the tissue or specific organ in the body due to the alternation of cell DNA.

The ovaries are oval-shaped ovum-producing reproductive organ formed part of women reproductive system that connects to the fallopian tubes and attaches to the outer layer of the uterus via the ovarian ligament. Usually, the left and right ovary take a turn to release an egg every month.

Ovarian cancer is medical a condition characterized by abnormal cells growth of ovarian cells that start on the surface of the inner lining of the ovary. Over time, the oversize tumor can travel a distance away to infect the nearby organ and tissue via the fluid and blood circulation.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, ovarian cancer is one of the dealy reproductive cancer in women. Every year, the disease causes more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system.

The lifetime risk of getting ovarian cancer is a woman is about 1 in 78.comapred to the lifetime of dying from ovarian cancer risk of 1 in 108.

The 5-year relative survival of all stages of ovarian cancer is 47%. However, women with ovarian cancer diagnosed at the localized stage have a 5 years survival rate of over 92%.

The exact causes of ovarian cancer are not identified. However, epidemiological studies suggested that women who have endometriosis, genetic preposition such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene, acquired genetic mutation such as the TP53 tumor suppressor gene are susceptible to the risk of the development of the disease.

The Canadian Cancer Society in the evaluation of the risk of ovarian cancer in women who are never being pregnant or giving birth wrote, "Women who have never been pregnant have a higher risk of developing ovarian cancer than women who have been pregnant".

And, "Researchers think that the lower risk maybe because the hormones that are present during pregnancy have a protective effect. It is possible that the higher risk in women who have never been pregnant is linked to the factors that may make it difficult for her to become pregnant".

In other words, women who have at least one pregnancy are at a lower risk of ovarian cancer compared to women who do not.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of cancers, Z-Ligustilide, the most potent bioactive component of Angelica Sinensis on ovarian cancer cells.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

According to the tested analysis,
* Z-Ligustilide resulted in apoptotic cell death by inducing oxidative stress on mitochondria.

* Furthermore. Z-Ligustilide enhanced the mitochondrial superoxide formation.

* NRF2, the antioxidant enzymes enhancer, and downstream antioxidant defense genes were elevated by tZ-Ligustilide in OVCAR-3 cells at the epigenetic level.

* Most importantly, NRF2 knockdown by siRNA resulted in increased cell death by Z-Ligustilide in ovarian cancer cells.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " Our result demonstrated the pro-survival role of NRF2 in Z-Ligustilide induced ovarian cancer cell death".

Taken altogether, angelica sinensis may be considered an antioxidant remedy for the prevention and treatment of human ovarian cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bromelain, Protects the Skin Cell Against Cancer Developing

Skin cancer is a medical condition caused by irregular cell growth in the skin due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Skin cancer is one most common types of cancer in the US. According to the statistics provided by the CDC, skin cancer affects 1 in 5 American and non-epithelial skin cancers represent 7% of skin cancers tracked by central cancer registries.

In 2012, more than 5.4 million cases of nonmelanoma skin cancer were diagnosed worldwide compared to only 3.3 million cases in the U.S.

The 5-year relative survival rate of basal cell carcinoma(BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is 95%.
Squamous cell carcinoma of the skin is one of the most common forms of squamous cells skin cancer developed in the middle and outer layer of the skin.

Although there are a number of conditions that can cause squamous cells skin cancer. However, in the US, the most squamous cell carcinomas of the skin are associated with a prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, either from sunlight or from tanning beds.

Dr. Faurschou A, the lead scientist said in vivo, "(although) the amount of UVB penetrating the epidermis and reaching the bulge cells is very low, which questions if these cells suffer sufficient DNA damage to transform into cancer stem cells".

And, "UV-induced SCC of mice originates from cells of the hair follicle, presumably the bulge stem cells, indicating that ultraviolet radiation penetrates epidermis sufficiently to cause irreversible DNA damage in cells located beneath the epidermis".

Most common symptoms of squamous cells skin cancer include firm, red nodule, flat sore with a scaly crust, a rough, scaly patch on your lip, a red sore or rough patch inside the mouth.

If you have experienced some skin symptoms that can not be healed in a short period of time, you may have squamous cells skin cancer. Please make sure that you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Depending on the size of the skin tumor, the small size of the localized tumor can be completely removed with relatively minor surgery or occasionally with a topical medication.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of squamous cell cancer, researchers examined the bromelain, obtained from pineapple, anti-cancer effects in vitro, against human epidermoid carcinoma-A431.

In vitro, the administration of bromelain exhibited a reduction in proliferation of both these cell-lines and suppressed their potential from anchorage-independent growth, a hallmark of carcinogenesis.

Injection of bromelain also suppressed the proteins associated with the production of proinflammatory cascade closely allied to cancer developing.

Additionally, bromelain inhibited the proliferation of cells by inducing the depletion of intracellular glutathione and generation of reactive-oxygen-species followed by induced cell death by mitochondrial membrane depolarization.

Furthermore, bromelain induced cell death through the expression of proteins associated with cell death programming and pro-apoptosis observed by cell cycle arrest.

In other words, bromelain protects the integrity and viability of the squamous cell against the alternation of cell DNA against the onset of cancer.

Based on the finding, researchers said, "Bromelain afforded substantial anti-cancer potential in these settings; hence we suggest it as a potential prospect for anti-cancer agent besides only an additive in chemotherapy".

Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of squamous cell skin cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Cinnamon - The new generation for Treatment and Management of Diabetes

Cinnamon, a kitchen spicy in many cultures, may have gained many believers, including medical professions because of its anti-diabetic effect, through regulating the blood glucose levels in healthy and diabetic subjects. According to herbalists, intake of 1/4 tsp. in the morning and evening may reduce the blood sugar significantly with little or no adverse side effects.

The herb has been used in herbal and traditional medicine as anti-fungal and bacteria levels to improve the reproductive organ, prevent flatulence and intestinal cramping, treat indigestion, diarrhea, bad breath, headache, migraine, etc.(1).

According to the 2011 statistic from National Diabetes InformationClearinghouse (NDIC), among U.S. residents ages 65 years and older, 10.9 million, or 26.9 percent, had diabetes in 2010, about 215,000 people younger than 20 years had diabetes—type 1 or type 2—in the United States in 2010 and approximately, 1.9 million people ages 20 years or older were newly diagnosed with diabetes in 2010 in the United States.

In a total of 66 patients with type 2 diabetes study conducted by Xuhui District Central Hospital, showed a reduction significant of blood triglyceride levels even in the low-dose group, after 3 months of oral administration(2)

Some researchers suggested that cinnamon extract improved fasting blood glucose levels and glucose tolerance without altering insulin secretion, through lower triglyceride and increased liver glycogen content and improved insulin action in liver tissues(3).

Dr. Kim SH and Dr. Choung SY. told PubMed that "the effect of cinnamon in significantly increases insulin sensitivity, reduces serum, and hepatic lipids, and improves hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia possibly by regulating the PPAR-medicated glucose and lipid metabolism"(4)

In support of the above, chromium(Cr) and polyphenols found in cinnamon (Cinnamomon cassia) indicated an improvement of glucose, insulin, cholesterol, and HbA1c in patients with type 2 diabetes following Cr supplementation, in a double-blind placebo-controlled study(7).

Unfortunately, according to the Western University of Health Sciences, consumption of cinnamon is associated with a statistically significant decrease in levels of fasting plasma glucose but insisted that high degree of heterogeneity may limit the ability to apply these results to patient care, due to the unclear preferred dose and duration of therapy(5)

A randomized clinical trial in which 70 patients with type II diabetes assigned randomly two groups (35 in cinnamon and 35 in the placebo group for the testing of the effect of cinnamon on the glucose level in the blood, indicated an insignificant effect of using cinnamon on glucose level of diabetic patients and the herb should not be recommended to patients with type II diabetes depending on further studies(6).

Taken altogether, cinnamon in a low dose may be effective in controlling the levels of blood glucose in patients with diabetes without altering the insulin level. according to DR. Georgakopoulou EA(7), Oral intake of Cinnamon may cause Stomatitis and burning sensation in mouth with a large amount. Traditional Chinese medicine also insisted that Overdoses of cinnamon can be toxic and damaged to the liver(1).

Cranberry Improves Metabolic Profile of Obesity in Vivo

A metabolic profile is a tool to diagnose metabolic disease.

A metabolic disease is a group of medical conditions that disrupt normal cell metabolism in converting food to energy.
Most common causes of metabolic disease are genetic prepositions. However, people with the mutated gene remain healthy for years.

Interestingly, cellular stress and family history have been found to be a major cause of the initiation of the symptoms of metabolic disease, epidemiologically.

As of today, there is no effective treatment of metabolic disease. Some children with the metabolic disease diagnosed at the early age may respond very well. However, many do not respond well to therapy and cause severe problems, despite the early diagnosis.

Dr. Ingraham RH, the lead scientist at the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine wrote, "Except in cases of gross mismanagement, these profiles do not offer a "quick fix." In many of the reported cases in which diagnosis of herd problems was attributed to the metabolic profile, the clinician should have been able to identify the problem before the profile was conducted".

According to statistics, the metabolic disease is uncommon in the US. Metabolic disorders affect approximately 1 in 1,000 individuals.

People who are overweight and obesity and physical inactivity and have a condition of insulin resistance are most likely to have metabolic disease developing.

According to the statistics, among US adults aged 18 years or older, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome rose by more than 35%. From 1988–1994 to 2007–2012, the condition increased from 25.3% to 34.2%.

Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of metabolic syndrome, some researchers suggested the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades may be the major culprit in inducing the rise of the metabolic syndrome, globally.

Hypertension is a condition of abnormally high blood pressure in the bloodstream. Hypertension a member of the cluster conditions of metabolic syndrome associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.
According to the statistics provided by the American Heart Association, approximately, 103 million U.S. adults have high blood pressure, or 1 in 2 adults in the US have the syndrome.

Obesity is a medical and chronic condition caused by long-term excessive body fat accumulated. Overweight is a condition of excess body weight relative to height.

According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), people who have a BMI between 25 to 29.9 are considered overweight and a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity.

The formula of the BMI indexBMI= weight (kg)/ height (m2)

According to the statistic, 68% of the American population is either overweight or obese. However,

in 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults, 18 years and older, were overweight, inclduing over 650 million were obese worldwide.

Dr. Shu-Zhong Jiang, the lead scientist wrote in the examination of the metabolic profile of obese wrote, "There are currently over 1.9 billion people who are obese or overweight, leading to a rise in related health complications, including insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, liver disease, cancer, and neurodegeneration".

And, "The finding that obesity and metabolic disorder are accompanied by chronic low-grade inflammation has fundamentally changed our view of the underlying causes and progression of obesity and metabolic syndrome".

The results strongly suggested that obese subjects are at an increased risk of metabolic disease.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia, researchers examined the effect of cranberry extract (CE) on the improvement of lipid dysfunction in HFD-induced obesity in an animal model.

The study included postnatal day 120 (PN120), male Wistar rats assigned into two groups: (1) SD (n = 36) fed with a standard diet and (2) HFD (n = 36), fed with a diet containing 44.5% (35.2% from lard) energy from fat.

According to the results from rats 12 animals from SD and HFD groups were killed at at At PN150 and others subdivided into four groups (n = 12/group): animals that received 200 mg/kg cranberry extract (SD CE, HFD CE) gavage/daily/30 days or water (SD, HFD) killed at PN180, HFD group showed higher body mass and visceral fat, cholesterol and triglyceride contents.

Furthermore, the HFD group demonstrated a significantly higher lipid peroxidation in plasma and tissues and higher protein carbonylation in the liver and adipose tissue compared to the SD group.
Application of CE not only inhibited the aforementioned parameters induced by a high-fat diet but also protected the liver tissues against by lowering lipid peroxidation and protein carbonylation and accumulation of liver fat without completely reversing the adiposity.

Based on the findings, researchers aid, "cranberry extract improved the metabolic profile and reduced oxidative damage and steatosis in HFD-fed rats, which suggests that it can help manage obesity-related disorders".

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the improvement of the metabolic profile of obesity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Fennel Seed Extracts That Gobble Up Toxins Caused by Medication Toxicity, Scientists Show

Fennel seeds may have the potential to act as liver antitoxins enzymes in removed xenobiotics from our body, some scientists suggested.

Liver cytochrome P450 3A4 (abbreviated CYP3A4) is an important enzyme, mainly found in the liver with function in stimulating the removal of toxins from our body through the oxidation of small foreign organic molecules (xenobiotics).

Acute drug toxicity is a condition characterized by having too much of a drug in the body at once caused by overdoses of a certain medicine.

Otherwise, drug toxicity is a condition of toxin accumulation caused by long-term intake of medicine which has a strong and negative impact on the liver or kidneys enzymes that are responsible for toxin removals.

The signs and symptoms of toxicity differ depending on the medication. However, most common symptoms may include diarrhea, dizziness, nausea, stomach pains, vomiting, and weakness.

Untreated drug toxicity may induce complications of ataxia, muscle twitches, slurred speech, nystagmus, seizures, coma,....... and, in rare cases, heart problems and death.

Dr. ALASDAIR BRECKENRIDGE, in the article " A clinical pharmacologist's view of drug toxicity," wrote, "Our ability to understand the basis of adverse drug reactions has improved progressively, and with it, the ability to prevent their occurrence; one aim of the clinical pharmacologist is to identify patients at special risk" and " With a fair degree of certainty one can also predict that advances in bioinformatics, genomics, and combinatorial chemistry will progressively contribute to clinical toxicology in the future"(6).

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean

The herb or food has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,...

In the study to compare the effectiveness of herbal compounds isolated from fennel against toxins that mediated by human liver cytochrome P450 3A4, researchers found that 13 compounds process a strong inhibitory activity(1).
Among these compounds, 5-methoxypsoralen (5-MoP) showed the strongest inhibition of toxins induced by drug interaction with an IC50 value of 18.3 μm and with a mixed type of inhibition(1).

According to the Brescia University Hospital, 5-methoxypsoralen (5-MOP) may be considered an alternative to 8-methoxypsoralen (8-MOP) for photochemotherapy of psoriasis, proven by the study in compared the clinical efficacy and tolerability of 5-MOP (1.2 mg/kg)-UVA versus 8-MOP (0.6 mg/kg)-UVA therapy in 25 patients of skin type III and IV(5).

The University of Toyama conducted an experiment to examine whether methanolic extract of fennel showed a characteristic of mechanism-based inactivation on erythromycin N-demethylation mediated by human liver microsomal cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4), suggested, 5-methoxypsoralen (5-MOP) showed the strongest inhibition with an IC50 value of 18.3 microM and a mixed type of inhibition, similar to those of above study.

With the preincubation time of 20 min only, 5-MOP showed preincubation time dependency with the IC50 value decreased from 18.3 microM with a preincubation time of 0 min to 4.6 microM with a preincubation time of 20 min(2).

These results suggested that 5-MOP acts as a human Liver Cytochrome P450 3A4 in inhibition of toxins caused by drug interaction in a time-dependent manner.

Additionally, in the examine the antitoxic effect of 30 sample plants of Indonesia, caused by the injection of xenobiotics, researchers showed that methanol extracts isolated from fennel seed exerted time-dependent inhibition toxins oxidized similarly to those of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) and CYP2D6.

In comparing the experimental injection to another plant with the same volume, fennel seeds extract should contain mechanism-based inhibitors on CYP3A4.

Mechanism-based inhibition or suicide inhibition, also known as suicide inactivation is an irreversible form of enzyme inhibition. If you need more information about the definition, please click the link provided by the Evidence-Based Medicine.

Taken together, fennel and fennel seeds extract may be considered as a functional supplement in protect liver detoxed enzymes against overexpression of toxins caused by small foreign organic molecules.
