Diarrhea is an acute condition of loose, watery stools (bowel movements). In other words, if you have loose stools three or more times in one day, you are considered to have diarrhea.
Most cases of diarrhea are acute that last for a few days. However, chronic diarrhea that lasts for a long period of time is an indication of other medical conditions, including irritable bowel disorder, or inflammatory bowel disease.
Accompanied by loose and watery stool, patients with chronic diarrhea also experience abdominal cramps and pain, fever, blood, and mucus in the stool, bloating, nausea, and the urge of a bowel movement.
Most common causes of diarrhea are an infection caused by bacterias and virus. Some medications such as antibiotics also have been found to induce acute diarrhea.
The condition in some cases can also be induced by lactose intolerance, fructose, artificial sweeteners, and other digestive disorder such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, celiac disease.
Acute diarrhea can be treated successfully if the cause is found. Untreated diarrhea has been found to cause complications of dehydration, particularly in children and a weakened the immune system in older adults
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and for the treatment of pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
On finding a natural compound for the treatment of diarrhea, researchers examined the effects of bromelain on K88 positive enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (K88+ ETEC), an important cause of diarrhea in young piglets.
The study included bromelain (0, 12.5, or 125 mg) orally administered to just weaned piglets for 10 days following by the commencement of bromelain treatment, piglets were challenged with K88+ ETEC (5 x 10(10) K88ac:0149) for seven days.
Injection of 12.5 or 125 mg showed a significant effect in reducing the incidence of K88+ ETEC diarrhea and protected piglets from a life-threatening disease.
Both doses of bromelain treated pigs also had significantly increased weight gain compared to untreated pigs.
However, bromelain only temporarily inhibited K88+ ETEC receptor activity observed by the receptor activity being regenerated 30 hours following treatment, consistent with the regeneration of new enterocytes.
In other words, both doses of bromelain can only temporarily inactivate ETEC receptors in vivo and protect against ETEC induced diarrhea.
These results strongly suggested that bromelain treatment prevented the attachment of K88+ ETEC to piglet small intestines that inhibits the risk of K88+ ETEC pathogenesis.
Based on the finding, Dr. Chandler DS, the lead scientist wrote, "Bromelain may, therefore, be an effective prophylaxis against ETEC infection".
Taken altogether, bromelain used alone or combined with conventional medicine may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of diarrhea, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Ashwagandha Showed a Strong Anti-Fungal Activity Against Candida Albicans
Fungal infection is a common disease caused by an overgrowth of fungus.
In other words, it is the condition in which the immune system that protects the body against microorganisms has been overwhelming by the overgrowth of fungus.
Candida albicans are members of a large group of microorganisms whose cells contain complex structures enclosed within the membranes, including yeasts, fungi, and molds that live among the gut flora in the human mouth and gastrointestinal tract.
In fact, under normal circumstances, Candida albicans that does not cause harmful effects, but overgrowth results in candidiasis. Non-albicans Candida (NAC) species cause 35-65% of all candidaemias in the general patient population.
According to the joint study, in many cases, biofilm (microorganisms with cells stick to each other on a surface) formation gene mutations are often associated with increased Candida resistance toward antifungal agents.
Infectious diseases are a medical condition caused by pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, parasites or fungi.
Most cases of infectious diseases are contagious by spreading directly or indirectly, from one person to another.
In other words, if you kiss, or are coughed or sneezed on by an infectious person, you are at risk of developing the same infectious disease.
According to the statistic provided by the World Health Organization, 3 infectious diseases were ranked in the top ten causes of death worldwide in 2016.
More precisely, lower respiratory infections, diarrheal diseases, and tuberculosis induced 3.0 million, 1.4 million, and 1.3 million deaths, respectively.
Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.
The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.
On finding a potent compound that processes the infectious diseases, researchers examined the effects of withanamides in W. somnifera anti-fungal activity on Candida albicans (C. albicans).
The study included 9 vaginal samples collected using the sterile swap and Falcon tube by the gynecological specialists.
Based on the results of the tested analysis, withanamides incubated with C. Albicans showed a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against C. Albicans, equivalent to 50 ppm to 250 ppm.
In other words, withanamides extract isolated from W. somnifera exhibited strong activity against infectious disease caused by C. Albicans.
After taking into account of con and cofounders, researchers wrote, "The results of this study showed that the antifungal activity of wind cheese against C. Albicans is good, so it can be used as a drug to treat infections caused by C. Albicans".
Taken altogether, Ashwagandha processes abundantly withanamides may be considered a functional herb for the treatment of infectious diseases associated with C. Albicans, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

Herbal Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara), the Liver-protective Remedy
The liver is the largest internal and only organ in the human body that can regenerate itself.
The liver is the first line of detoxing defense by filtering the blood that comes from the digestive tract, before passing them to other organs and tissues in the body.
The liver also produces cholesterol that plays a critical role in building strong cell membranes, producing steroid hormones and vitamin D, and aiding the digestive function in food absorption and detoxifying chemicals and metabolizing drugs.
The hepatoprotective or liver protective effect is an action that maintains the healthy function of the liver against any harmful toxins.
Symptoms of liver diseases include jaundice, abdominal pain, and swelling, swelling in the legs and ankles, itchy skin, dark urine, and pale stool color, and a tendency to bruise easily.
There are no exact causes of liver disease. Viruses, toxins, genetics, alcohol, and unknown causes are some prevalent factors found in patients with chronic liver disease, including cancer.
In the US, most cases of liver disease are a result of hepatitis viral infection and autoimmune diseases. Infectious viral hepatitis can produce toxins to protect them against the antioxidant enzymes produced by the host body and prevent the attack of the systematic immune response.
Furthermore, in recent years, excessive alcohol drinking has been found to induce alcoholic liver disease in many parts of Asia and America.
Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used over thousands of years to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches and obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.
On finding a potential compound which processes a liver protective effect, researchers examined the highly active photocomposition (PC-1) containing oregano (Origanum vulgare), wild thyme (Thymus serpyllum) and coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara) aerial parts, valerian (Valeriana officinalis) leaves and little-leaf linden (Tilia cordata) flowers and PC-1 extract exhibited the strongest anti-lipid peroxidation (LPO)O and antihemolytic effects.
According to the tested results, PC-1 extract activated the Nrf2/antioxidant response is more effective comapred to the extracts of other photocomposition.
Furthermore, oral administration of PC-1 extract (100-200 mg/kg) markedly protected the rat liver injury acutely or chronically against intoxicated by carbon tetrachloride.
The liver protective activity of PC-1 was attributed to the activation of the levels of antioxidant enzymes in the host and the improvement of liver histology, blood chemistry parameters.
Moreover, the osmotic fragility test (OFT) also addressed that PC-1 extract inhibited the destruction of red blood cells in carbon tetrachloride intoxicated rats.
Based on the findings, researchers said, " these data support the strategy of in-vitro plant selection for developing efficacious tissue-protective photocomposition".
Taken altogether, coltsfoot may be considered a liver protective remedy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Bilberry, A Natural Treatment for Peyronie's disease
Peyronie's disease is a rare condition caused by plaque, that forms inside the penis, leading to a bent erect penis, depending on where the plaque is located.
Patients with Peyronie's disease has been found to affect sexual desire due to a physical condition associated with painful sexual intercourse and erectile dysfunction.
Researchers do not know the exact causes of Peyronie's disease. However, according to the epidemiological studies, researchers suggested that injury that causes bleeding inside the penis may induce the built-up of scars, particularly in men with the genetic preposition of certain genes.
Most cases of pain in Peyronie’s disease are mild and often do not require treatment, however, over counter medicine may be needed occasionally.
Believe or not, most mild cases of men with Peyronie's disease do not require treatment as the condition has been found to go away within a year. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the scar tissues in the penis that cause the condition.
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of Peyronie's disease investigated various antioxidants, including bilberry in PD treatment with significantly increase the likelihood of therapeutic success.
By comparing the effects of silymarin, ginkgo biloba, vitamin E, bilberry, topical diclofenac sodium, and pentoxifylline (PTX) in patients with PD, researchers found that by administration of a single oral antioxidant; two oral antioxidants; three oral antioxidants; five oral antioxidants + local diclofenac; and five oral antioxidants + local diclofenac + PTX achieve better results when combining more than one agent.
According to the tested assays, the combination of more than a single compound reduced the symptoms in patients with PD, including the improvement and disappearance of penile pain; percentage of reduction in the volume of penile plaque; reduction in penile curvature; recovery of erectile function in patients with erectile dysfunction; increase in the International Index of Erectile Function score; and reduction of psychosexual impact.
Particularly, treatment of combined therapy including oral treatment with more than one antioxidant is greater when topical use of diclofenac gel and perilesional injection of PTX, compared to those of single conventional medicine.
In other words, combined natural or dietary antioxidants such as bilberry into the diet of patients with PD are more effective in inhibiting the symptoms compared to the use alone of any single ingredient therapy.
The final outcome of 6 months of treatment showed that combined antioxidant therapy is effective in treating PD.
Dr. Paulis G, the lead scientist, after taking other factors into account wrote in the final report, " Although several articles have already been published reporting the effectiveness of combined treatment in PD, this is the first study clearly proving how, as the number of substances used in treatment rises, a proportionally greater therapeutic effect is achieved."
Taken altogether, bilberry combined with other antioxidants or conventional medicines may be considered function remedies for the treatment of Peyronie's disease (PD), pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bromelain Modulates the Immune Function Against Allergic Airway Disease (AAD)
Chronic allergic airways disease (AAD) is a group of the disease characterized by airway inflammation and airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR).
Airway inflammation is the hallmark of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) associated with low-grade inflammation caused by persistent production of proinflammatory cytokines by the immune system in the airway.
On the other hand, airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) is a cardinal feature of asthma associated with the response of the immune system against pathogens.
The most common symptoms of coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath in reactive airway disease (AAD) may not be due to asthma or other chronic airways conditions.
Conventionally, reactive airway inflammatory disease is treated with medication to control symptoms such as long-term use of an inhaler to relieve attacks and improved quality of life through avoidance of irritants.
If the cause of reactive airway disease is found, most cases of the condition may be cured by medication.
Dr. Jill R. Johnson, the lead scientist in the examination of Allergic Airway Disease: More than Meets the IgE? wrote, "After exposure, allergens crosslink with IgE on mast cells and induce histamine and leukotriene release (6), thereby initiating the allergic response and leading to the classic symptoms of allergy, i.e., sneezing and wheezing".
And, ". Omalizumab binds to the Ce3 domain of free IgE with high affinity (7), thereby inhibiting early- and late-phase asthmatic reactions (8) and decreasing the frequency of exacerbations in severe asthmatics (9). Omalizumab binding also prevents IgE from interacting with Fc«RI and Fc«RII1 on effector cells (mast cells, B cells, eosinophils, dendritic cells, and monocytes), thus impairing their activation and making them less sensitive to allergens, and disabling signaling cascades (10), with the end result of a reduction in symptoms".
In other words, allergic airway disease (AAD) is a result of an immune response upon exposure to the allergens, Therefore, by making the immune system less sensitive to allergens, symptoms of allergic airway disease (AAD) may be reduced.
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
With an aim to discover a potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with chronic inflammation, researchers examined the ability of bromelain in reducing the inflammation of preexisting asthma via ovalbumin (OVA)-induced murine model of allergic airway disease (AAD).
The study included female C57BL/6J mice with intraperitoneal OVA/alum and then challenged them with OVA aerosolization for 10 consecutive days.
On day 4, phosphate buffered saline (PBS) was administrated to the control group (n = 10) and bromelain (6mg/kg) in PBS were administrated to the bromelain (intervention) group (n = 10).
According to the tested assays, bromelain treatment of AAD mice (bromelain group) showed a significant anti-inflammatory activity indicated by reduced BAL total leukocytes, eosinophils, and cellular infiltrates via lung pathology compared to the control group.
Furthermore, bromelain also significantly reduced bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) CD4+ associated and CD8+ T cells d with the T helper 2 (TH2) cells in the promotion of allergic inflammation process without affecting cell numbers in the spleen or hilar lymph node.
The efficacy bromelain in the inhibition was attributed to the decreased interleukins involved in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
In other words, bromelain protects asthma patients against allergic airway inflammation through its strong anti-inflammatory property.
Based on the results, researchers said, "bromelain has a therapeutic effect in established AAD, which may translate into an effective adjunctive therapy in patients with similar conditions, such as allergic asthma, who have chosen to initiate treatment after the onset of symptoms".
In order to find more information about bromelain anti-ADD activity, researchers investigated the effect of bromelain treatment in an ovalbumin (OVA)-induced murine model of allergic airway disease (AAD).
Selected mice were sensitized with intraperitoneal (i.p.) OVA/alum and challenged with daily OVA aerosols to induce ADD followed by the treatment of either saline, 2 or 6 mg/kg bromelain, twice daily for four consecutive days.
According to the findings, bromelain showed a similar effect as the aforementioned results in reduced total BAL leukocytes, eosinophils, CD4+, and CD8+ T lymphocytes, CD4+/CD8+ T cell ratio, and IL-13.
Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of allergic airway disease ADD, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cranberry, the Remedy for Reducing the Risk Treatment of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)
The liver is the largest internal organ found in the human which plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body.
The liver also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance which aids digestion, builds cell membranes and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.
Liver disease is a class of medical conditions characterized by the reduction partly or completely the function of the liver, including liver failure.
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a chronic condition caused by fat accumulated in the liver over time, in the absence of excessive alcohol use. The disease can be classified into the types of non-inflammatory fatty liver (NAFl) and inflammatory nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)(1).
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the major causes of cirrhosis and liver cancer.
According to world statistics, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is normally known as a disease of the Western world(2). However, due to the economic prosperity of Southeast Asian(3), the disease also was found in a large population in the cities, causing concerns of many scientists in the region(4)(6).
According to the joint assessment of the prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and risk factors for advanced fibrosis and mortality in the US, led by the Stanford University School of Medicine, "The prevalence of NAFLD in the United States (U.S.) has risen from 18% in 1988–1991 to 31% in 2011–2012. Estimates of NAFLD prevalence for adults in Western countries are 20–30%, with much higher prevalence in adults with obesity (80–90%), diabetes (30–50%), and hyperlipidemia (90%)"(5).
The exact causes of NAFLD aren't well understood. Some researchers suggested that certain risk factors such as long-term use of certain medications(8), genetic preposition(8), insulin resistance(8), high cholesterol(8) and triglycerides(8) in the blood, polycystic ovary syndrome(8), metabolic syndrome(8), obesity(8), and type 2 diabetes(8) are associated with the onset of the disease.
Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.
On finding a potential compound for the prevention and treatment of liver diseases, researchers investigated cranberry effects on metabolic profiles, including that during the progression of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), in a high-fat diet (HFD)-fed C57BL/6 mice.
According to the results of the experiment, the application of cranberry reduced the levels of oxidative stress in mice that were fed HFD diets with supplementation of 1 and 5% cranberry powder, compared to HFD-fed control mice.
1 week after beginning the diets to the end of the study, the bodyweight of mice in the cranberry-treatment groups was significantly lower, compared to mice in the HFD-fed control group.
Furthermore, during the early treatment phase, the injection of cranberry suppressed the elevation of serum triglycerides, leading to the smaller of the adipocytes in the adipose tissues in HFD-fed mice compared to the cells in HFD-fed control mice.
More importantly, the nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) characteristics of the levels of lipid-droplet formation and hepatocyte ballooning in the liver were drastically decreased in cranberry-supplemented-HFD-fed mice relative to the levels in HFD-fed control mice.
Based on the findings, researchers said, " Cranberry ameliorates HFD-induced metabolic disturbances, particularly during the early treatment stage, and exhibits considerable potential for preventing the progression of NAFLD.".
Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a functional food for the treatment of NAFLD, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cranberry Effects on Diabetes and Hypertension Management
Diabetes is a medical condition caused by not insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream.
In other words, diabetes is a condition associated with the inability of the body to use insulin properly.
Most cases of insulin insufficiency in the bloodstream in diabetes are either caused by the gradual died-off of the pancreas beta cells or insulin receptors clogged-up by fat and cholesterol.
Hallmarks of diabetes are hyperglycemia and insulin resistance.
According to the statistics, in 2017, 7.3% of Canadians aged 12 and older (roughly 2.3 million people) reported being diagnosed with diabetes.
Most common causes of diabetes are metabolic syndrome, a cluster of conditions including high blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose, gestational diabetes, prediabetes, damage to the pancreas causes the gradual and irreversible loss of beta cells that reduce the production of insulin, and influenza a viruses
Hypertension, a condition associated with the cluster of metabolic syndrome is a medical condition associated with abnormally high blood pressure.
Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood and changes constantly depending on activity. However, persistent hypertension due to poor management over time can lead to diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
According to the statistics provided by the American Heart Association., nearly half of all adults in the United States are living with high blood pressure or 1 in 3 American are hypertensive.
Hypertension is leading risk factors of heart disease and stroke that cause most death in the US
The most common prevalent factors associated with the condition onset are family history, aging, being male, being overweight or obese, ethnicity, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet and medical condition such as chronic kidney disease.
Believe it or not, excessive alcohol drinking is also one of the major causes besides obesity in elevating the syndrome onset.
On finding a potential compound for the management of blood pressure, researchers examined the effect of a water-soluble cranberry-based phytochemical combination with oregano, rosemary, and Rhodiola Rosea against hypertension.
According to the tested analysis, the 75% cranberry with 25% oregano combinations showed the highest antioxidant phenolics (38.9 mg/g DW) comapred to other combinations by inhibition of free radical DPPH inhibition by 73.6 %.
Furthermore, 75% cranberry and 25% Rhodiola Rosea combination had the highest alpha-glucosidase activity among the combinations.
Alpha-amyloid associated diabetes also was associated with 75% cranberry with 25% Rhodiola Rosea combination comapred to other combinations.
Additionally, anti-ACE-I inhibitory activity against the risk of hypertension was also inhibited by the 75% cranberry with 25% rosemary comapred to other combinations.
In other words, cranberry combined with other herbal medicine protects patients with diabetes and hypertension against complications by inhibiting the levels of alpha-glucosidase, alpha-amyloid, and ACE-I
Based on the results, researchers said, "The analysis of alpha-glucosidase,alpha-amylase, and ACE-I inhibitory activities suggested that inhibition depends on the phenolic profile of each unique extract and by bringing together synergistic combinations to cranberry, health beneficial functionality was enhanced".
Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the management of diabetes and hypertension, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
