Cranberry, the Best in the Management of Obesity, Researchers Say

Obesity is a chronic condition characterized by excess body fat that has accumulated over time. People with a BMI of over 30 is considered obese.

Similarly, overweight is a condition of excess body weight relative to height. People with a BMI ranged from 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight.

According to the statistics, over 30 % of the American population is obese. Obesity has been found to induce adverse effects on nearly every system of the human body, leading to an increased risk of numerous diseases, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Furthermore, the rate of obesity in the US and Canada continues to climb at an alarming rate, leading to significant burdens to the country's economy and health care system.

Epidemiologically, the most common symptoms of obesity are breathlessness, increased sweating, inability to cope with physical activity, feeling very tired every day, back and joint pains, low confidence, and self-esteem and feeling isolation

According to the CDC, the most common complications associated with obesity are coronary heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, cancer of breast, colon, endometrial, gallbladder, kidney, and liver and sleep apnea.

Currently, there is no effective treatment of the disease. However, some researchers suggested that combat the powerful environmental factors that influence eating and physical activity may be the best approach to reduce the risk of obesity.

Dr. EunSeok Cha, the lead scientist wrote, "Obesity among young adults is a growing problem in the United States and is related to unhealthy lifestyle habits such as high caloric intake and inadequate exercise. Accurate assessment of lifestyle habits across obesity stages is important for informing age-specific intervention strategies to prevent and reduce obesity progression".

And, "Overweight and obese young adults can promote their cardiometabolic health with healthy lifestyles. To take action, young adults need practical and strategic dietary advice about beverage choices, diet quality, and macronutrient and micronutrient sources. In addition, increasing overall activity and minimizing sedentary behavior needs to be emphasized for young adults to achieve physical activity goals.".

In other words, by changing to a healthy lifestyle such as a healthy diet and moderate exercise, over a long-term obese is controllable.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers investigated the anti-adipogenic effect of the polyphenol-rich extract obtained from chokeberry Aronia melanocarpa (Michx.) Elliot, raspberry Rubus idaeus L., bilberry Vaccinium myrtillus L., and cranberry Vaccinium macrocarpon Aiton fruits.

According to the results from the analysis, the preparations ranged from 25-100 μg/mL not only significantly decreased lipid accumulation but also inhibited the expression of reactive oxygen species in the adipocytes without showing cytotoxicity.

The Real-time PCR analysis also revealed that the extract at a concentration of 100 μg/mL suppressed the process of cell differentiation of adipogenesis and lipogenesis that converts triglyceride for storage in fat via inhibiting the gene expression (PPARγ) of energy metabolism and genes associated with adipogenesis (C/EBPα) and lipogenesis (SREBP1).

In 3T3-L1 adipocytes, the expression of adiponectin involved in regulating glucose levels as well as fatty acid breakdown was increased by 4.4 fold whereas hormone leptin found in high levels of obese subjects was decreased by 90% by the extracts.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " the analyzed extract may be a promising source of bioactive compounds that support long-term weight maintenance and promote the effective management of obesity".

Taken altogether, cranberry combined with other herbal medicine may be considered a remedy for the management of obesity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Bilberry Effects On Locomotion In Patients with Neurodegenerative Disease

Locomotion is the ability to move from place to the other. In humans, locomotion controlled by the cerebellum is a complex process that requires the integration of central and peripheral nervous signaling coordinated by the muscles.

In other words, every time you move any part of the body, the cerebellum fires into action.

Damage of the cerebellum of the brain has been found to induce difficulty with balance, coordination, and fine motor skills in patients.

Besides neurodegenerative diseases, alcohol abuse, certain medications, stroke, tumor, cerebral palsy, brain degeneration, and multiple sclerosis are the most common risk factors which can affect the brain locomotion control.

In conventional medicine, depending on the causes that affect the locomotion, adaptive devices may be introduced to maintain independence. Other therapies such as physical, occupational, and speech therapy with moderate exercise have been found to be helpful.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the improvement of locomotion in patients with neurodegenerative disease, researchers examined the possible effects of prolonged administration of lyophilized Vaccinium berries (blueberry, bilberry) on cognitive performance against the incidence of degenerative disorders.

Mice selected to the study were observed by step-down inhibitory avoidance, open field, elevated plus-maze, and radial maze tasks. The lyophilized berries were administered for 30 days before the first training.

According to the tested assays, lyophilized berries significantly enhanced locomotion by increasing the number of crossings in the first exposure to the open field.

Additionally, short term treatment with lyophilized berries also improves rat performance on the elevated plus-maze task.

In other words, lyophilized berries inhibited the neuro deficits associated with inactivity behavior such as anxiety.

Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanoside may be considered a functioning remedy for the improvement of locomotion in patients with neurodegenerative diseases, pending to the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Bilberry Protects Us Against Diseases Associated with Oxidative Stress

Oxidative stress occurs when the ratio of the levels of free radicals and antioxidants is imbalanced. In other words, oxidative stress is a result caused by either overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host.

Free radicals are an unstable atom with a lone electron in the outer ring. Therefore, in order to become stable, free radicals must steal or donate an electron from other stable atoms, leading to a chain reaction which is highly reactive that can be stopped until all single electron is paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

Antioxidants are stable atoms which inhibit oxidation.

Free radical exists in and outside our body. Externally, the air we breathe, the food we eat and environmental toxins and internally, the cell's metabolism, all contribute to the production of free radicals.

On the other hand, antioxidants can either be produced by the body internally or induced by the consumption of antioxidant-rich externally.

Under normal conditions, in a healthy individual, the production of antioxidant enzymes by the body is more than enough to counter the levels of free radicals in the body. However, for people with a weakened immune system or immature immune system, the intake of dietary sources of antioxidant-rich foods may be necessary.

Maintaining the healthy levels of antioxidants in the body is the best way to prevent diseases associated with oxidative stress, including atherosclerosis, cancer, diabetics, rheumatoid arthritis.

In the urgency to discover a bioactive compound for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the anti-adipogenic effect of the polyphenol-rich extract obtained from chokeberry Aronia melanocarpa (Michx.) Elliot, raspberry Rubus idaeus L., bilberry Vaccinium myrtillus L., and cranberry Vacciniummacrocarpon Aiton fruits.

According to the tested assays, treatment with the extract (25-100 μg/mL) significantly decreased lipid accumulation and reactive oxygen species generation in adipocytes without showing cytotoxicity.

The extract at a concentration of 100 μg/mL suppressed adipogenesis and lipogenesis by inhibiting the receptors involved gene expression.

Moreover, the extract also exerted the anti-adipogenic effect by a significant increase in the expression of adiponectin (4.4-fold) and decreased leptin expression (90%) made by adipose cells.

In the study to investigate the antihyperglycemic effects of four extracts obtained from leaves and fruits of Vaccinium myrtillus and Vacciniumcorymbosum in diabetic rats randomly divided into seven equal groups: NC-normal control, DC-diabetic control, PC-positive control treated with metformin, VML-received V. myrtillus leaf extract, VMLF-received VML, and fruit extract, VCL-received V. corymbosum leaf extract, and VCLF-received VCL and fruit extract, researchers found that according to the Bodyweight and glucose levels monitored every second week and after 8 weeks of treatment, serum glucose, insulin, and malondialdehyde measurement

* VML treated group showed no significant decrease in weight compared to a decrease in body weight in all diabetic groups in the first weeks.

* VML, VMLF, and VCLF groups demonstrated a decrease in blood glucose levels compared to the increase in the DC, PC, and VCL groups.

* Additionally, serum insulin and glucose levels at the end of the experiment were lower in VML, VMLF, and VCLF groups compared to other unimproved groups.

* More importantly, V. myrtillus extracts prevented the development of cataract compared with the DC group (P < .05).

The findings suggested that bilberry processes antioxidative stress activity against the onset of obesity and retinal degenerative disease.

Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compounds may be considered a functioning remedy for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, pending to the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cinnamon, the number One Whole Herb Medicine in management of diabetes and its complications

Intake of cinnamon is found to improve fasting glucose, glucose tolerance, and insulin sensitivity in women with insulin resistance associated with the polycystic ovary syndrome.

Cinnamon is a spice derived from the inner bark of a tree, native to South East Asia, of over 300 species of the genus Cinnamomum, belonging to the familyLauraceae, used in herbal and traditional medicine as anti-fungal and bacteria level, to improve reproductive organ, prevent flatulence and intestinal cramping, and to treat indigestion, diarrhea, bad breath, headache, migraine, etc.

Cinnamaldehyde, in the animal study found in the husk of Cicer arietinum L. Monosaccharide, exhibited antioxidant effects in reduced 29% of free radical expression and glucolipid levels through its action on multiple signaling pathways including cell cycle arrest and anti pro-inflammatory property.

In vivo and in vitro, administered orally cinnamic acid and cinnamaldehyde lower acute blood glucose and improve glucose tolerance, through stimulating insulin secretion in isolated islets, according to the joint study led by the University of Karachi.

In a 16-week double-blind randomized control trial of 116 individuals with metabolic syndrome, dietary intervention groups with the administration of cinnamon [6 capsules (3 g) daily], significant improve all components of metabolic syndrome in a sample of Asian Indians in north India.

Dr. Gupta Jain S lead author of the researchers said,"Significantly greater decrease [difference between means, (95% CI)] in fasting blood glucose (mmol/L) [0.3 (0.2, 0.5) p = 0.001], glycosylated haemoglobin (mmol/mol) [2.6 (0.4, 4.9) p = 0.023], waist circumference (cm) [4.8 (1.9, 7.7) p = 0.002] and body mass index (kg/m2 ) [1.3 (0.9, 1.5) p = 0.001] was observed in the cinnamon group compared to placebo group".

Other researchers in the study of cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia) anti-diabetic property on obese patients also suggested, its effectiveness of increased the lipid storage capacity of white adipocytes and increased the fatty acid oxidation capacity may be due to activities of some other components of cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia) in the prevention of obesity-induced type II diabetes

Although cinnamon (Cinnamomum sp) has shown to express good glycemic control to patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), the intake of cinnamon supplements and whole herb should only be given by the qualified herbal doctor to achieve a greater health effect without side effects.

According to traditional Chinese medicine, cinnamon is a very hot herb, overdoses may induce toxicity.

Cranberry Protects the Neurons Against β-Amyloid Aggregation

Amyloid beta (Aβ or Abeta) is the main component of the amyloid plaques that cause the gradual death of neurons, leading to the onset of Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease is a common form of dementia or neurodegenerative disease found in the elderly.

Alzheimer's disease is a type of dementia correlated with major reductions of neurons to the respective target areas, named after German physician Alois Alzheimer.

According to the statistics, the disease is most prevalent in the elderly. Approximately 5.7 million Americans of all ages are living with Alzheimer's. 15.9 million family caregivers provide an estimated 18.2 billion hours and $230 billion to people with dementia worldwide.

Alzheimer's disease is caused by a combination of genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors that affect the neurons of the brain over time. However, less than 10% of patients with AD are associated with a genetic preposition. Patients with such mutated genes on chromosomes 21, 14, and 1are virtually guaranteed to develop the disease.

More precisely, Alzheimer's disease is caused by the gradual loss of neuron functioning that usually starts with the early symptom of the difficulty of remembering recent events and worsens over time.

Alzheimer's destroys brain cells, causing cognitive modalities severe enough to affect language communication, memory, lifelong hobbies or social life. Alzheimer's gets worse over time, and it is fatal.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of mental disorders, researchers examined the effect of cranberry supplementation on β-amyloid aggregation.

According to tested analysis, the cranberry protected the neurons by mediating Aβ toxicity alleviation required heat shock transcription factor (HSF)-1 rather than DAF-16 and SKN-1associated with cellular stress.

In other words, cranberry supplementation reduced Aβ toxicity induced brain cell stress by reducing the transactivity of HSF-1 in an IIS-dependent manner.

More precisely, HSF-1 plays a pivotal role in maintaining proteostasis, a process that regulates proteins within the cell in order to maintain the neuron cellular health involved in oxidative stress.

Based on the findings, researchers aid, "(cranberry) elucidated the mechanism whereby cranberry attenuated Aβ toxicity in C elegans and stressed the significance of proteostasis in the prevention of age-related diseases from a practical point of view.".

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the treatment of AD, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Chaste Tree Berry for Treatment of High Levels Testosterone Induced Male Sexual Libido, Acne and Prostate Disease

A recent study conducted by a renowned institute suggested that Vitex agnus castus (Vac.) may have the potential in decreased overproduction of testosterone on male reproductive physiology.

Testosterone is a male steroid hormone played an important role in male reproductive organs and building bone and muscle mass as well as stimulating sexual desire in both sexes.

Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, used in herbal medicine for thousands of years as an aphrodisiac herb and considered as Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts.

In the study of hydroalcoholic Vac. extract (extraction by percolation technique) with the following doses: 65, 165, 265, 365 and 465 mg kg-', bromocriptine as a dopamine receptor agonist (5, 10, 20 mg kg(-1)) and haloperidol as a dopamine receptor antagonist (1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3 mg kg(-1)) injection male mice treated with chaste tree berry extract or combination of the extract showed a significant decrease of levels of testosterone in compared to other treatment groups.

Dr. Nasri S, the lead author said, ". LH and testosterone were measured by Radio Immuno Assay (RIA). LH and testosterone showed a significant decrease in the bromocriptine group and haloperidol increased these hormones. Vac. extract decreased significantly the LH and testosterone levels. The coadministration of Vac. extract and bromocriptine decreased LH and testosterone".

The study also found that Vitex agnus castus extract influences the neurotransmitters such as dopamine in regulated LH and testosterone secretion.

In confirming to the efficacy of chaste tree berry in reduced testosterone production, Vitex agnus castus L. (Vit.) fruit extract with 1650 mg/kg tested on male mice model with the doses (65, 165, 265, 365, 465 mg/kg) injected intraperitoneally for 30 days in 5 groups of animals, all tested mice showed a decreased testosterone levels in dose depending manner.

The researchers also insisted that through the Radio Immuno Assay (RIA), Vit. the fruit extract has an anti-androgenic effect and probably acts through the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal (HPG) axis and the side effects only appear after a long time of their usage.

Dr Jillian Stansbury, not the author of the studies said, " (due to the effects of chaste tree berry in reduced LH levels and testosterone levels ) that Vitex may improve symptoms of high testosterone levels in men, including excessive libido, acne, and prostatic disease."

The reduced levels of testosterone of herbal medicine may be beneficial for patients with high levels of testosterone-induced of sexual libido, acne, and abnormal prostate expression.

Herbal Chaste Tree Berry, a Valuable Chemotherapeutic Agent for Treatment of Cancers

Chaste tree berry is found to exhibit a significant anti-cancer activity, a recent study by renowned study advised.

Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by cells growing and multiplying disordered and uncontrollable way in our bodies. In the late stage, the cancer cell may travel away from the originated site
to infect other tissues and organs.

According to the Tianjin Institute for Biomedicinal Research, in the evaluated the apoptosis-inducing effect of chaste tree berry, using observation under a light microscope, flow cytometric analysis, and agarose gel electrophoresis, vitexicarpin, a flavonoid found in chaste tree berry significantly inhibited proliferation of human cancer cells lines A2780(human ovarian carcinoma), HCT-15(human, colon, colorectal adenocarcinoma), HT-1080(fibrosarcoma cell line) and K562(Human chronic myeloid leukemia cells), depending to the concentration.

Dr. Wang HY the lead researcher in the study said, "Vitexicarpin induces apoptosis.... via mitochondria(in regulated cell metabolism)-controlled apoptotic pathway".

In support of the above analysis, the crude extract prepared with ethanol from dried ripened Vitex agnus-castus fruits exerted strong cytotoxic effects against cancer cell lines of human uterine cervical canal fibroblast (HCF), human embryo fibroblast (HE-21), ovarian cancer (MCF-7), cervical carcinoma (SKG-3a), breast carcinoma (SKOV-3), gastric signet ring carcinoma (KATO-III), colon carcinoma (COLO 201), and small cell lung carcinoma (Lu-134-A-H) cells.

The inhibition of the extract is attributed to the effect on cell death through apoptosis and increased intracellular oxidation in the tumor cells.

Other researchers suggested that the cytotoxic effects. of Chaste tree berry may be involved in various aspects, including the JNK (apoptosis) pathway. as indicated in the new native lignan VB6 study.

Taking together, there is no doubt, that chaste tree berry may be considered as a valuable chemotherapeutic agent for the treatment of various types of cancer, depending to further evaluation.
