Dandelion(Taraxacum officinale) May Process Anti-Intestinal Metaplasia (IM) and Atypical Hyperplasia (AH), Researchers Say

The stomach located between the esophagus and the small intestine is a muscular, hollow, and important organ of the digestive tract.

The stomach plays a critical role in aiding the digestive system by secreting acid and enzymes that digest food induced by the stomach muscles that contract periodically, to churn the food and enhance digestion.

Atypical hyperplasia is a precancerous condition characterized by the accumulation of abnormal cells.

Intestinal metaplasia is a pre gastric cancer condition caused by the change of cells in the stomach.

The exact causes of the condition are unknown. However, some researchers suggested that smoking and infection caused by H. pylori infection, genetic preposition, and environmental factors are some risk factors associated with the onset of intestinal metaplasia.

Gastric cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular and uncontrollable cell growth in the stomach lining in the beginning. At the advanced stage, the malignant cells can travel a distance away through blood and fluid circulation to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

Researchers do not know why some people with the same health condition are susceptible to the risk of gastric cancer, while others do not. The exact causes of gastric cancer are also unknown. However, some researchers suggested that Age, diet, and stomach disease, such as can increase the risk of developing gastric cancer.

Both atrophic gastritis and gastric cancer share the common symptoms of stomach pain, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite,... and indigestion. However, common symptoms of unexpected weight loss and stomach ulcers can only be found in gastric cancer while iron deficiency anemia is found in the majority of patients with atrophic gastritis.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, approximately, 27,510 cases of stomach cancer will be diagnosed (17,230 in men and 10,280 in women) and 11,140 people will die from gastric cancer (6,800 men and 4,340 women).

Overall, the 5-year survival rate for people with gastric cancer is 31%. Cancer diagnosed at the localized stage have a 5 years survival rate of 67%.

Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver, and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of gastric diseases, scientists examined the efficacy of Xiao Wei Yan Powder (XWYP) decoction on intestinal metaplasia (IM) and 104 cases of atypical hyperplasia (AH).

Where XWYP is a traditional Chinese Medicine formula containing Smilax glabrate, Hedyotis diffusae, Taraxacum mongolicum, Caesalpinia sappan, Paeonia alba, Cyperus rotundus, Bletilla striata, Glycyrrhiza uralensis, etc.

According to the results of 138 cases of intestinal metaplasia (IM) and 104 cases of atypical hyperplasia (AH) of the gastric mucosa of chronic gastritis that was treated by Xiao Wei Yan Powder (XWYP) orally 5-7g, for a period from 2-4 months, compared to control, the decoction showed a significant effect rate of IM was 91.3% and that of the AH was 92.16% compared to the control group of 21.3% and 14.46% respectively.

More precisely, XWYP not only had marked therapeutic effects for IM and AH but also showed no toxic effects in the animal experiments revealed no toxic effect,

These results strongly suggested that a safety guarantee was provided for its clinical application.

Taken altogether, Dandelion in a combination with other Chinese medicines may be considered a remedy for the treatment of intestinal metaplasia and atypical hyperplasia (AH), pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Turmeric Inhibits the Onset and Progression of Chronic Prostatitis

Prostatitis is a condition associated with the inflammation of the prostate and the areas around the prostate.

According to the statistics provided by the American Family Physician, approximately 8.2 percent of men in the US are living with prostatitis. The conditions account for 8 percent of visits to urologists, and up to 1 percent of visits to primary care physicians.

Believe it or not, in 2000, prostatitis cost over $84 million, including the charge of diagnosis and treatment.

The most common symptoms of prostatitis are painful, difficult, and/or frequent urinating, groin pain, rectal pain, abdominal pain and/or low back pain, fever, chills, and body aches.

In severe cases, patients may also experience symptoms of urethral discharge, painful ejaculation or sexual dysfunction, and blood in the urine.

The exact causes of prostatitis are not identified, some researchers suggested that nerve damage in the lower urinary tract caused by surgery or trauma to the area has been found to induce prostatitis in patients.

Conventionally, most cases of prostatitis are treated by antibiotics in cases of infection, alpha-blockers to relax the bladder neck, and muscle fibers, and anti-inflammatory medicine to ease pain and discomforts.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

With an aim to find a potential and natural ingredient for the treatment of inflammatory diseases such as chronic prostatitis/ chronic pelvic pain syndrome type III (CP/CPPS), researchers examined the effect of turmeric on chronic bacterial prostatitis.

Phase II, the randomized, single-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trial included 60 patients who were examined by the University of Catania from June 2015 to January 2016 we enrolled 60 consecutive due to CP/CPPS III.

At the end of the experiment, the treatment group showed a significant improvement in the National Institutes of Health Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index, IIEF-5 (+ 3.5; p < 0.01), particularly other symptomatic parameters compared to placebo.

Participants were then allocated to receive treatment (Group A) or placebo(Group B). Treatment consisted of rectal suppositories of Curcumin extract 350 mg (95%) and Calendula extracts 80 mg (1 suppository/die for 1 month). Patients of Group B received 1 suppository/die for 1 month of placebo.

The efficacy of the treatment with Curcumin and Calendula was associated with the reduction of inflammatory cytokines and of inflammatory cells.

Based on the findings, Dr. Morgia G, the lead researcher said, "In this phase II clinical trial, we showed the clinical efficacy of the treatment with Curcumin and Calendula in patients with CP/CPPS III".

Taken altogether, turmeric used alone or combined with Calendula may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of chronic bacterial prostatitis and chronic pelvic pain syndrome, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.

Fennel, The Natural Free Radical Scavenger, Scientists Find

Fennel may be the next generative functional food with the potency in blocking the overexpression of free radicals in the induction of chronic illness, some scientists suggested.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron that cause oxidation by stealing an electron from other molecules to give rise to a chain activity. Once free radical starts its domino effect, it can not be stopped until two free radical species react with each other to form a stable, non-radical adduct or are inhibited by the presence of antioxidants.

Antioxidants, on the other hand, are stable molecules that inhibit oxidation caused by free radicals.

The relationship between free radicals and antioxidant are summarized by Dr. V. Lobo, the lead author in the study "Free radicals, antioxidants, and functional foods: Impact on human health ", "A balance between free radicals and antioxidants is necessary for proper physiological function. If free radicals overwhelm the body's ability to regulate them, a condition known as oxidative stress ensues. Free radicals thus adversely alter lipids, proteins, and DNA and trigger a number of human diseases. Hence the application of an external source of antioxidants can assist in coping with this oxidative stress".

These explanations suggested that intake of antioxidants from the food sources in the stimulation of antioxidant enzymes in the body is beneficial in maintaining good health, However, the doctors continued, "Synthetic antioxidants such as butylated hydroxytoluene and butylated hydroxyanisole have recently been reported to be dangerous for human health. Thus, the search for effective, nontoxic natural compounds with antioxidative activity has been intensified in recent years".

Overexpression of free radicals or imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body can initiate oxidative stress. A prolonged period of oxidative stress in the human body plays a major part in the development of chronic and degenerative illnesses such as cancer, autoimmune disorders, aging, cataract, rheumatoid arthritis, and cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus Foeniculum, belonging to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.

The functional herb has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, regulate the menstrual cycle, and relieve PMS,...

Fennel is an excellent source of natural antioxidants and contributed to the daily antioxidant diet. The functional food is found to process a free radical scavenging activity, particularly in the application of its phenolic and flavonoid.

In the examine the effects of fennel essential oil in the presence of overexpression of free radicals, researchers found, that injection of the oil exerts a strong antioxidant activity in comparison with butyrated hydroxyanisole and butylated hydroxytoluene., however, injection of ethanol and water extracts of fennel showed less effective compared to essential oil.

Furthermore, in the evaluation of the essential oils of the fruits of three organically grown cultivars of Egyptian fennel (Foeniculum vulgare var. azoricum, Foeniculum vulgare var. dulce, and Foeniculum vulgare var. vulgare) in antibacterial and antioxidant effects, researchers showed that all three cultivars contain a great source of trans-Anethole, estragole, fenchone, and limonene.

All phytochemicals demonstrated significant activity in free radical scavenging, inhibited lipid peroxidation, and metal chelation.

Additional differentiation suggested that essential oils from the azoricum and dulce cultivars were more effective antioxidants than that from the vulgare cultivar and essential oils from 3 species display similar antimicrobial activities against two species of fungi, two species of Gram-negative and two species of Gram-positive bacteria.

More importantly, in the examine the effect of essential oil on fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) lipophilic secondary metabolites, researchers at the Avicenna Tajik State Medical University, discovered that
* The oil exhibited moderate antioxidant activities.

* The antioxidants in the essential oil are found to protect the healthy cells and stimulate the expression of free radicals in exerting cytotoxic activity against HeLa (human cervical cancer), Caco-2 (human colorectal adenocarcinoma), MCF-7 (human breast adenocarcinoma), CCRF-CEM (human T lymphoblast leukemia) and CEM/ADR5000 (adriamycin resistant leukemia) cancer cell lines;

* The most effective of the IC50 values are between 30-210 mg L-1.

These results suggested essential oil from fennel is processed as a great source of antioxidants with the function of balancing the ratio of free radicals in the body, thus preventing the initiation of oxidative stress.

Ginger, The Best for the Treatment of Diabetes and Diabetes Complications With No Side Effects

Ginger may have a potential and profound effect in regulating abnormally high blood sugar, some scientists suggested.
Hyperglycemia is a condition of abnormally high levels of glucose in the bloodstream.

According to the statistic, approximately, 30.3 million Americans, or 9.4% of the population, had diabetes. Approximately 1.25 million American children and adults have type 1 diabetes. And, hyperglycemia is a hallmark sign of diabetes(both type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes) and prediabetes.

Some researchers suggested that people who are living under prolonged periods of stress due to chronic illness or stress are associated with a higher risk of high blood sugar.

Other suggested that an unhealthy diet such as high in saturated and trans fat, red meat, processed food, and lack of physical exercise have many folds increased the risk for the onset of hyperglycemia.

In fact, shift workers accompanied by an unhealthy lifestyle are jointly associated with the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Dr. Shan Z, in the concerns of the rotating night shift work and lifestyle factors in the risk of diabetes using the data of Nurses' Health Study (1988-2012) and Nurses' Health Study II (1991-2013) and comparing to the 143 410 women without type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or cancer at baseline, said, " The multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios for type 2 diabetes were 1.31 (95% confidence interval 1.19 to 1.44) per five-year increment of the duration of rotating night shift work and 2.30 per unhealthy lifestyle factor (ever smoking, low diet quality, low physical activity, and overweight or obesity)".

"For the joint association of per five-year increment rotating night shift work and per unhealthy lifestyle factor with type 2 diabetes, the hazard ratio was 2.83 (2.15 to 3.73) with a significant additive interaction (P for interaction <0.001)".

How severe of the diabetes risk in nurses in the rotating shift accompanied by an unhealthy diet? According to the team, during 22-24 years of follow-up, 10 915 cases of incident type 2 diabetes occurred.

The risk of type 2 diabetes is even higher if each individual factor is also included.

These results clearly suggested, that the onset of diabetes is not caused by a single factor but associated with a group set of risk factors.

Luckily, most people with some of the above risk factors do not develop hyperglycemia or type 2 diabetes.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient and whole food for the treatment of diabetes and diabetes complications, researchers examine the action of ginger in the diabetic population.

Selected mice fed either a high-fat diet or a standard diet for a period of 17weeks were given phloretin isolated from apple and [6]-gingerol isolated from ginger supplemented at two different doses.

Application of phloretin and [6]-gingerol inhibited the formation of AGEs by suppressing the receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE).

Where Advanced glycation end products are proteins or lipids that become glycated as a result of exposure to sugars. The products can substantially worsen certain chronic diseases such as diabetes.

Phloretin or [6]-gingerol supplementation significantly reduced plasma glucose, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, AGEs, and insulin levels and enhanced GSH/GSSG ratio.

These results suggested that phloretin or [6]-gingerol supplementation not only inhibited the oxidative stress that causes abnormally high blood glucose but also improved the insulin resistance against the onset of diabetes complications in mice fed with a high-fat diet.

Furthermore, the assessment of the effect of ginger consumption on glycemic status, lipid profile and some inflammatory markers in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus with the consumption of 1600 mg ginger versus 1600 mg wheat flour placebo daily for 12 weeks, also found that ginger reduced fasting plasma glucose, HbA1C, insulin, HOMA, triglyceride, total cholesterol, CRP and PGE₂ significantly compared with the placebo group (p < 0.05).

Ginger improved fasting glucose and parameters associated with the onset of insulin resistance without inducing any side effects.

Dr. Arablou T after taking into account co and confounders said, "Ginger improved insulin sensitivity and some fractions of lipid profile, and reduced CRP and PGE₂ in type 2 diabetic patients. Therefore ginger can be considered an effective treatment for the prevention of diabetes complications".

Taken altogether, ginger may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of diabetes and diabetes complications induced by abnormally high blood glucose.

Herbal Ashwagandha Inhibits the Onset of Progression of HIV Infection

Human immunodeficiency virus -1 (HIV-1) is one of 2 types of HIV precipitated by acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), transmitted through direct contact with HIV-infected body fluids, including blood, semen, and genital secretions,...

Human immunodeficiency virus HIV-1 is the most widespread type worldwide that can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a chronic condition caused by the infection of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

According to statistics, AIDS is the fifth leading cause of death in the US.

People between the ages 25 and 44 in the United States are at substantially higher risk compared to other age groups.

Approximately 36.7 million people worldwide lived with HIV/AIDS in 2016, including, 2.1 million children less than 15 years of age.

According to epidemiological studies, people who serval sexual partners are the most at risk of HIV infection.

However, the virus can also transmit through infected blood transfusion, infected mothers to children.

Most people infected by the HIV virus may experience symptoms of fever, muscle aches, and joint pain similar to those of influenza in the early stage of the viral attacks.

According to epidemiological studies, people who have serval sexual partners are the most at risk of HIV infection.

However, the virus can also transmit through infected blood transfusion, infected mothers to children.

If untreated, the virus will slowly multiply and destroy the cells of the immune system, leading to chronic signs and symptoms of fever, fatigue, and swollen lymph nodes,...

If an infected individual has the numbers of T-cell count below 200, the person is considered to have AIDs.

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered an anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the prevention of infectious diseases, researchers examined the clinical efficacy and safety of a new polyherbal preparation, Immu-25, in HIV-infected patients.

The open-label pilot study. included 36 patients (10 female, 26 male) with a mean age of 35 +/-10 years, with confirmed HIV infection with a CD4 count <500 cells/microL, and received two capsules of the test drug twice daily for 18 months.

According to the results of the study, the polyherbal preparation produced good symptomatic improvement within 6 months with an increase in mean (95% CI) weight from 58 (53-64)kg to 63 (56-69)kg, 64 (58-72)kg and 68 (62-74)kg after 6, 12 and 18 months of treatment, respectively.

The application decreased the incidence and severity of symptoms such as diarrhea, fatigue, anorexia, cough, and fever in the participants.

Furthermore, there was a decrease in the mean (95% CI) viral load from 326 438 (428 600-186 420) copies/mL to 180 495 (258 300-124 000) copies/mL and 22 069 (42 100-16 000) copies/mL after 6 and 12 months of treatment, respectively.

Most importantly, the decrease in viral load was associated with an increase in mean (95% CI) CD4 count from a baseline of 243 (203-388) cells/microL to 336 (263-486) cells/microL after 6 months of therapy, and this continued to rise to 527 (285-767) cells/microL (p < 0.001) and 618 (362-1012) cells/microL (p < 0.001) after 12 and 18 months of treatment, respectively.

However, mild gastrointestinal adverse effects had been reported by some of the participants.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, "herbal drug may have a good immunomodulatory effect and has potential as a co-therapeutic agent in the management of HIV infection. Further studies are warranted to confirm its therapeutic potential".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of HIV infection, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, the Potential and Natural Anti Type 4 Hypersensitivity with No Side Effects, Scientists Find

Scientists may have found a herbal medicine for the prevention and treatment of type 4 hypersensitivity with no side effects, according to studies.

Type 4 allergy or type 4 hypersensitivity is often called delayed-type hypersensitivity as the reaction takes several days to develop.

In other words, instead of happening right the way as that of other types, type 4 hypersensitivity typically develops at least 48 hours after exposure to an antigen.

The process that develops type 4 hypersensitivity involved the activation of the white blood cell cells in stimulating the release of cytokines and chemokines, and macrophages and cytotoxic CD8+ T cells associated with the body's adaptive immune response.

Compared to other types of allergy mediated by the antibody, type 4 allergy is a cell-mediated response.

Type 4 hypersensitivity can induce allergic contact dermatitis, occurred at the site where the antigen contacts the skin, then spread to other regions through contamination of the antigen.

Type 4 hypersensitivity is caused by atopic dermatitis, lung diseases associated with hypersensitivity, type 2 diabetes, and inflammation of the thyroid gland.

Treatment of type 4 hypersensitivity is totally depending on the severity of the disease. however, the most appropriate approach is to avoid the offending antigen.

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi is one of the species of Bearberry, in the genus Arctostaphylos, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to northern North America, Asia, and Europe.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as a diuretic agent and to treat urinary problems, including bladder infections, kidney infections, kidney stones, pelvic pain, etc.

The herbal plant contains arbutin, ursolic acid, tannic acid, gallic acid, some essential oil and resin, hydroquinones tannins, phenolic glycosides, and flavonoids.

In the concern of the widespread of Type IV hypersensitivity caused by contact dermatitis, researchers at the Kinki University examined the combined effect of arbutin isolated from the leaves of Arctostaphylos uva-ursi (L.) Spreng. (Bearberry leaf) and indomethacin on Type IV allergic reaction-induced immuno-inflammation, carrageenin-induced edema, and adjuvant-induced arthritis.

Injection of arbutin at a dose of 50 mg/kg 24 h after the application rapidly decreased the swelling of type IV allergic sheep-induced edema and adjuvant-induced arthritis by picryl chloride (PC-CD) compared to no reaction at the divided doses of 50 mg/kg.

Arbutin (p.o.) plus indomethacin (s.c.) exerted highly inhibitory effects on the swelling of PC-CD and sheep red cell delayed-type hypersensitivity (SRBC-DTH) compared to that of indomethacin alone.

Furthermore, arbutin (p.o.) and indomethacin (s.c.) in a given portion were simultaneously administered, the inhibitory effect was more potent than that of indomethacin alone in both carrageenin-induced edema and adjuvant-induced arthritis.

The results clearly suggested that arbutin may increase the inhibitory action of indomethacin on PC-CD, and SRBC-DTH against type 4 hypersensitivity.

Moreover, in the comparison of water extract (UW-ext) from the leaf of Arctostaphylos uva-ursi (L.) Spreng (Bearberry leaf) on the antiallergic and anti-inflammatory activities of dexamethasone ointment, researchers found one or 2% UW-ext ointment did not inhibit the ear swelling by picryl chloride-induced contact dermatitis (PC-CD) and carrageenin-induced paw edema.

However, combined with dexamethasone ointment (0.005 or 0.025%), UW-ext augmented the inhibitory effect of dexamethasone ointment (0.005 or 0.025%) on these allergic and inflammatory models with no side effects.

These findings showed that not all parts of herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi process anti-type 4 allergies, but combined with other therapy all parts augmented the significant anti-allergic and inflammatory activity with no side effects.

Additionally, the investigation of the antitype 4 allergies properties of the combined effect of 50% methanolic extract from Arctostaphylos uva-ursi (L.) Spreng. (bearberry leaf) and prednisolone also showed similar results as illustrated by the above 2 studies.

U-ext did not show an inhibitory effect on the swelling induced by PC-CD in divided doses of 100mg/kg immediately before and 16 h after the application of PC-CD, while it exhibited a significant therapeutic effect at a dose of 100 mg/kg or more once 24 h after the application.

Injection of the combination of U-ext (p.o.) and prednisolone (s.c.) simultaneously administered, exerted a greater inhibitory effect compared to that of prednisolone alone.

Researchers at the above studies wrote in the final report, "Bearberry leaf possesses a therapeutic effect against immuno-inflammation induced by PC-CD and also increases the inhibitory effect of prednisolone, and its active principle may be arbutin".

Taken altogether, herbal Herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi (Bearberry) may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary medicines for the treatment of type 4 hypersensitivity with no side effects.

Herbal Turmeric Optimizes the Intestinal Mucosal Barrier Function Against Pathogens

Intestinal mucosa processes a single cell layer of epithelial cells with a function to protect the intestine against invasive pathogens and ensure the function of the intestinal in nutrients adsorption.

Biologically, the intestinal protection of the intestinal mucosal barrier function is associated with
*Bile and gastric acid produced in the liver and stomach that only aid digestion but kills microorganism

* Defensins secretory epithelial cells with a function to protect the intestines against bacteria, fungi and many enveloped and nonenveloped viruses.

* Lysozyme is an enzyme that protects the intestine by causing the destruction of the cell walls of certain bacteria.

* Regenerating islet-derived protein 3 gammas (Reg3γ), an antibacterial lectin is a type of antimicrobial peptide found in the gut epithelial Paneth cells with a function to prevent microorganisms from coming into contact with the epithelial layer.

In other words, the intestinal mucosal barrier plays an essential role in the separation of the inside of the body from the outside environment, particularly in harmful microorganisms.

Dr. Oshima T the lead scientist in the examination of light junctions (TJs), the most important component for the construction of a constitutive barrier of epithelial cells that regulates the permeability of the barrier by tightly sealing the cell-cell junctions, wrote, "Gastrointestinal diseases including reflux esophagitis, inflammatory bowel disease, functional gastrointestinal disorders, and cancers may be regulated by these molecules, and disruption of their functions leads to chronic inflammatory conditions and chronic or progressive disease".

And, "regulation of the barrier function of epithelial cells by regulating the expression and localization of TJ proteins is a potential new target for the treatment of these diseases".

More precisely, by improving the intestinal mucosal barrier function, diseases associated with the gastrointestinal tract may be preventable.

With an aim to find a potential ingredient for the protection of the intestinal mucosal barrier, researchers examined the effects of curcumin's extensive pharmacological effects, on gastrointestinal diseases.

According to the analysis, curcumin exerted protective effects on the intestinal mucosal barrier through multiple pathways.

More precisely, curcumin protected the tissues of the intestinal mucosal barrier by

* By reducing the production of proinflammatory cytokines in orchestrating cell damage.

* By inhibiting the oxidative stress caused by overexpression of free radicals in facilitating the onset of chronic inflammation in the initiation of intestinal mucosal damage.

* By reducing levels of bacteria in the induction of infection that may weaken the function of the intestinal mucosal barrier.

Moreover, curcumin also protected the cells of intestinal mucosa against apoptosis.

In additional differentiation of the tested assays, researchers also found that curcumin also balances the ratio of gut microbiota associated with the regulation of intestinal microecology and intestinal immune response which plays a critical role in enhancing the intestinal mucosal barrier function.

Taken altogether, turmeric may be considered a supplement for the improvement of intestinal mucosal barrier function, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.
