Depression is a common and serious psychological illness, affecting the physical and mental functions of patients, including the ways patients feel, think and act.
Some patients with depression may feel sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed.
There are many causes associated with the onset of depression, including genetics, changes in hormone levels, certain medical conditions, stress, grief or difficult life circumstances that initiate the change of brain chemistry in inducing depressive syndrome.
The most common symptoms of depression include sadness, hopelessness, guilt, change of mood, loss of interest in friends, family, favorite activities, and sex.
Some patients with depression also experience cognitive symptoms of trouble concentrating, making decisions, remembering, and thoughts of harming themselves.
Readers may find other symptoms not be included in the article including behavior and physical symptoms.
Over 30 million Americans suffer from depression and the amount is increasing at an alarming rate. Depression may be a mental health disorder that can affect the way you eat, sleep, and the way you feel about yourself.
According to the statistics provided by the Anxiety and Depression of Association of American, major depressive disorder is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. for ages 15 to 44.3, affecting more than 16.1 million American adults, or about 6.7% of the U.S. population age 18 and older.
The mild case of depression can be defeated by a variety of self-care techniques. Others require the treatment of medication, such as antidepressant medications and psychotherapy that help to reduce and sometimes eliminate the symptoms of depression.
On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of neurological disorders, scientists examined the effects of Xiaoyaosan (XYS), a famous and classic traditional Chinese prescription on depressive disorders.
Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.
The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.
In a total of 17 depressed patients and the 17 age- and gender-matched healthy subjects as the primary cohort, depressed patients were screened according to the Chinese Classification of Mental Disorder (CCMD-3) and the Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD).
According to the results of experience,* There were significant differences between depression cohort and healthy volunteers, and between patients before and after the treatment of XYS.
* Furthermore, XYS enhanced the levels of oxalic and stearic acids that significantly increased in depressed patients' plasma while valine and urea significantly decreased, as compared with healthy controls.
* XYS reversed these metabolite changes in terms of regulating dysfunctions in glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism, fatty acid biosynthesis, valine, leucine and isoleucine biosynthesis, and arginine and proline metabolism.
Taken altogether, angelica sinensis may be considered a remedy to treat depression, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Angelica Protects the Neurons Against Neuro-Inflammation in Vitro
The central system is the complex of nerve tissues including the brain and spinal cord with functions to respond to the integrating sensory information.
Neuroinflammation is a process of the immune system that responds to harmful pathogens that induced oxidative stress to the brain.
Neuroinflammation is also the inflammation of nervous tissue associated with the immune response in the first phase of infection including infection, traumatic brain injury, toxic metabolites, or autoimmunity.
There many risk factors associated with the onset of neuroinflammation similar to other tissues inflammation, including infection, traumatic brain injury, toxic metabolites, or autoimmunity.
Inflammation is a natural response of the immune system in which the macrophages of the first defense stimulates the production of blood palette to cover the wound in case of injury and production of proinflammatory cytokines to the site of infection to fence off the foreign pathogens.
Inflammation also can be triggered by the immune mistakenly attacked the body tissues in cases of autoimmune disease.
The neuroinflammatory disease can be acute or chronic. Chronic neuroinflammation that leads to the activation of glial cells and the recruitment of inflammatory cytokines into the brain is found to associate with neurodegenerative diseases.
Most cases of the neuroinflammatory disease associated with the loss of neuronal structure and function.can be measured by the typical inflammatory markers, including CSF Aβ1-42, tau and p-tau181, and a panel of 37 neuroinflammatory markers in patients with Alzheimer's disease.
On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of neurological disorders, scientists examined the effects of dangguishaoyao-san (DSS) (Angelica sinensis, Paeoniae radix, Rhizoma Ligusticum, Poria cocos, Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, and Rhizoma Alismatis) on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated BV-2 microglial cells.
Angelica or Danggui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.
The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen the heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.
According to the results of BV-2 cells pretreated with 0.58-1.16 mg/mL of DSS for 2 h and then treated with 1 μg/mL LPS for 24 h,
* DSS treatment at concentrations of 0.58-1.16 mg/mL did not induce significant cytotoxicity.
* DSS attenuated the release of pro-inflammatory factors, such as interleukin-1β (IL-1β), iNOS and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in LPS-induced BV-2 cells.
* DSS attenuated the mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, TLR2, and TLR4 by decreasing TLR4 and TLR protein levels and decreased levels of phosphorylation of IκB which regulates the cellular response to inflammation in LPS-induced BV-2 cells.
* DSS also down-regulated the nuclear translocation of p65 in the initiation of cancer cell proliferation and survival.
Based on the results, researchers suggest, " DSS has a protective effect on neuroinflammation in LPS-induced BV-2 microglial cells through the TLRs/NF-κB signaling pathway".
Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered an antioxidant remedy for the treatment of neuroinflammation, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cranberry Inhibits Herpes simplex virus 1 and 2 (HSV-1, 2) Infection
Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) primarily causes oral herpes, including cold sores and fever blisters around the mouth and on the face.
Herpes simplex virus-2 (HSV-2) primarily causes genital herpes and genital herpes outbreaks
Infection can be acute or chronic. In the acute phase of infection, after receiving the messages from the central nervous system related to the danger of microbial infection, the immune macrophages in the first line of defense stimulates the production of blood palette to the cover the wound and pro-inflammatory cytokines to the site of the infection to kill off pathogens which try to enter the body.
However, overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the acute phase of infection has also killed off or damage to the nearby healthy cells, leading to the formation of scars.
In most cases in a healthy individual, the immune system can easily eradicate all foreign invaders and the wound is recovered within days and weeks.
Symptoms of the acute infection include gastrointestinal discomforts, such as congestion vomiting or nausea, and diarrhea, short term joint or muscle pain, fever, headache, skin rash and cough, Some patients with acute infection also experience symptoms of swollen lymph nodes, an indication of the body is fighting infection.
In chronic infection, the symptoms are most vague or no specific symptoms, including bronchitis and asthma, persistent low-grade chronic joint and muscle pain, or swelling and the alternations between diarrhea and constipation, bloating, or heartburn, In other words, the symptoms are totally depended on the location of the low-grade inflammation.
Most cases of infection except those of viral infection are treated by topical antibiotic cream and/or oral antibiotics.
Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of skin infection, researchers investigated the effects of cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon Ait.) extracts Oximacro(®) against Herpes simplex type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2) infections.
In vitro, the novel cranberry extract Oximacro(®) and its purified A-type proanthocyanidins (PACs-A) inhibited HSV-1 and HSV-2 replication.
Furthermore, Oximacro(®) prevented the adsorption of HSV-1 and HSV-2 to target cells.
Moreover, Oximacro(®) and its PACs-A targeted the viral envelope glycoproteins gD and gB to enter cells, thus resulting in the loss of infectivity of HSV particles.
Most importantly, Oximacro(®) completely exerted continuously its anti-HSV activity even at acidic pHs (3.0 and 4.0) and in the presence of 10% human serum proteins, and conditions that mimic the physiological properties of the vagina.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "Oximacro(®) as an attractive candidate for the development of novel microbicides of natural origin for the prevention of HSV infections".
Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered an immune-modulatory remedy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

The Herbal Medicines that Treat Unspecific Low Back Pain
Low back pain is a musculoskeletal disorder (MSDs) of degenerative disc disease, with pain persisted for longer than 3 months, affecting over 80% of the population in the US alone some points in their life.
Chronic LBP prevalence in older adults was significantly higher than the 21-to-44-year age group and inflicted more disabled, longer symptom duration, etc.(2). The unique impact of CLBP is unknown(3).
Acute lower back pain is a common musculoskeletal disorder (MSDs) caused by injury to the muscles, ligaments, joints, or discs that last less than a few months.
Chronic lower back pain that lasts longer than 6 months, normally caused by damage of nerves in the low back which supplies sensation and power the muscles in the pelvis, legs, and feet.
According to the statistics, up to 80% of the population will experience back pain at some time in their lives. The condition affects people of all ages, particularly in occupations required the use of muscles of the lower back often.
Worldwide, years lived with a disability caused by low back pain have increased by 54% between 1990 and 2015.
Depending on the severity of the condition, chronic lower back pain can induce symptoms of numbness, tingling, or weakness in one or both legs and intense, constant pain that gets worse at night.
Some people with chronic lower back pain may also experience symptoms of loss of bowel or bladder control and unexplained weight loss.
According to the statistics, the lifetime prevalence of non-specific (common) low back pain is estimated at 60% to 70% in industrialized countries with a one-year prevalent rate ranging from 15% to 45%. The adult incidence of lower back pain is 5% per year.
Comfrey is a perennial plant in the genus of Symphytum, belonging to the family Boraginaceae, native to Europe. It has been used in herbal and traditional medicine to ease excessive bleeding or on open wounds, relief pain and swollen, treat circulation issues, reduce cholesterol, etc.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with neuro and muscle pain, researchers examined the effectiveness of herbal medicine, including comfrey for nonspecific low back pain (LBP).
A systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involved in the searching of studies published on numerous electronic databases up to September 2014 found 14 RCTs with 2050 participants/
Capsicum frutescens (cayenne) reduces pain more than placebo.
Although Harpagophytum procumbens (devil's claw), Salix alba (white willow bark), Symphytum officinale L. (comfrey), Solidago chilensis (Brazilian arnica), and Lavender essential oil also seem to reduce pain more than placebo, evidence for these substances was of moderate quality at best.
All tested herbal medicine herbal showed no significant adverse events within the included trials.
Taken altogether, Comfrey and other herbal medicine may be considered a remedy for the treatment of unspecific low back pain, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bromelain Ameliorates Endometrial Pain
Endometriosis is a medical condition caused by the tissue of the endometrium that grows outside the uterus, leading to severe abnormal pain.
Most cases of endometriosis are found to involve the ovaries, fallopian tubes and the tissue lining the pelvis.
Some researchers suggested the cause of endometriosis is a result of a layer of endometriosis lining on the inside of the uterus is expelled, instead, some of the endometriosis tissues grow somewhere in the body in the last stage menstrual cycle (menstruation).
Endometriosis also reacts to hormone signals of the monthly menstrual cycle, by building up tissue, breaking it, and eliminating, according to the stage of the menstrual period. Since they grow in somewhere other than in the uterus when they break, the period blood has no way to exit, causing blood attaching to the organs or lining of the abdomen, resulting in scars or adhesion as well as weakening the normal function of organs.
According to statistics, endometriosis affects
a) About 20% of reproductive-age women with endometriosis present but without symptoms.
b) About 55% of women who have developed the new onset of severe menstrual cramps.
c) About 25% of women with sub-fertility (less fertile than a normal couple)
Endometriosis can vary in appearance. It may be clear or white, reddish, brown or blue-black, and cysts. The condition can be classified according to the stage of severity:
* Minimal stage:
The top surface, few in number. Commonly they are found in the inside wall of the uterus, ligaments, and ovary.
* Mild stage:
Deeper implants, greater numbers are presented. Commonly found in the same area as a minimal stage.
* Moderate stage:
Many implants, endometrial cysts present, affecting ovary function, causing scar tissues and adhesion is also present.
* Severe stage:
Intensive peritoneal implants, large endometriomas present, and dense adhesion.
Each woman experiences differently from endometriosis. Some women may have extensive endometrial tissues in their body but feel little or no pain, while other women may only be in the early stage of endometriosis but have excessive pain.
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
With an aim to find a potential ingredient for the treatment of endometriosis-associated pelvic pain, researchers evaluated the antioxidant activity of a preparation containing N-acetyl cysteine, alpha lipoic acid, and bromelain.
The multicenter, open-label, non-comparative clinical trial included a sample of 398 patients with a mean age of 34.6 ± 7.2 years with endometriosis-associated pelvic pain.
According to the results of a combination of N-acetyl cysteine, alpha-lipoic acid and bromelain treatment after 6 months, in comparison of 92.7% of the patients with pain intensity > 4 on the visual analogue scale (VAS) at the baseline, the percentage was decreased to 87.2% (p = 0.074) at 3 months of treatment.
Also compared to the baseline, the percentage decreased even more at 82.7% (p < 0.05) at the 6 months treatment.
More importantly, the use of medicine for pain relief also was also reduced upon the application of the combination, according to the results of the experiment.
Dr. Lete I, the lead scientist said at the final report, "Women with endometriosis who wish to become pregnant and are treated with a preparation containing N-acetyl cysteine, alpha lipoic acid and bromelain experienced a significant improvement in endometriosis-associated pelvic pain and required lower intake of rescue analgesics".
Taken altogether, bromelain used alone or combined with other remedies may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of endometrial pain, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Bromelain Promotes Enzyme and Evokes Antibodies Against the Progression of Lung Cancer
Lung cancer is a chronic condition characterized by the irregular cell in the lung tissues caused by the alternation of cells DNA.
The lung is a vital organ of the human being, located near the backbone on either side of the heart with functions of inhaling oxygen from the air then transporting them to the bloodstream and exhaling carbon dioxide from the bloodstream.
According to the statistics, in the US, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths. In n 2007. lung caused the death of 158,683 Americans, including 88,329 men and 70,354 women i
There are several types of lung cancer including
1. Non-small cell lung cancer
Non-small cell lung cancer, the most common type of lung cancer grown and spread methodically and predictably, includes
* Squamous-cell carcinoma often found in an outer area of the lung.
*Large-cell carcinoma found in the center of the lung by an air tube.
* Adenocarcinoma found in any part of the lung.
2. Small cell lung cancer
Small cell lung cancer is an aggressive type of lung cancer. The cells of small cell cancer have been found to spread to distant parts of the body in a relatively early stage.
* Small cell carcinoma in which the cells are small, round and resemble oats.
* Mixed small cell/large cell carcinoma, the malignant tumor is found in combining components of small cell lung carcinoma with large cell lung carcinoma.
* Combined small cell carcinoma, the malignant tumor is found in combining of a component of small cell lung carcinoma with components of non-small cell lung carcinoma
Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of lung cancer, some researchers suggested smokers are at substantial risk of the disease.
Dr. Ozlü T the lead scientist wrote, "It is estimated that deaths attributable to tobacco use will rise to 10 million by 2025, and one-third of all adult deaths are expected to be related to cigarette smoking".
And, "Tobacco use has been reported to be the main cause of 90% of male and 79% of female lung cancers. 90% of deaths from lung cancer are estimated to be due to smoking. The risk of lung cancer development is 20-40 times higher in lifelong smokers compared to non-smokers".
The results strongly suggested that if you are a smoker, your risk of lung cancer developing is rocketing.
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
With an aim to find a natural ingredient against lung cancer, researchers examined the effects of the antitumor effect of fastuosain, a cysteine proteinase from Bromelia fastuosa on the intravenous model of lung colonization in C57Bl/6 mice.
According to the tested assays, fastuosain showed reduced expression of the marker of cancer progression (CD44) and decreased invasion by inhibiting cancer cell communication and inflammation in tumor cells.
Furthermore, fastuosain also induced cancer apoptosis by blocking the function enzymes associated with cell proliferation.
Interestingly, in green fluorescent protein-chimeric animals, treatment with fastuosain did not change the number of cells that migrated to the lung, compared to PBS-injected control mice, but the number of positive major histocompatibility complex class II cells associated with antigens was increased significantly.
In other words, fastuosain anti-lung cancer activity is mainly involved in the direct effect of the enzyme and elicitation of protective antibodies.
Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of lung cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Fennel May Improve Your Heart Functioning Naturally and Permanently, Studies Showed
Fennel may have a potential and positive effect in improvement of cardiovascular activity, some scientists suggested.
The results of vascular and cardiovascular protective effect were reported by numbers of universities including the Birzeit University and published on online medical literature.
Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of genus, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean, used in traditional and herbal medicine as warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,...

5. Riboflavin (Vitamin B2)
6. Niacin (Vitamin B3)
7. Pantothenic acid (B5)

9. Folate (Vitamin B9)
10. Vitamin C
11. Calcium
12. Copper
13. Iron
14. Magnesium
15. Molybdenum
16. Phosphorus
17. Potassium

In the study to investigate the vascular effects of aqueous extracts of Foeniculum vulgare leaves in pentobarbital-anaesthetised rats, researchers found that intravenous administration of the lyophilized boiled water extract exerted a significant dose-related reduction in arterial blood pressure, without affecting the heart rate or respiratory rate in compared to histamine antagonists.
However, the application of non-boiled aqueous extract showed very little hypotensive activity.
In contrast to the conventional medicine histamine antagonists, the hypotensive effect of the boiling water extract appeared not to be mediated by adrenergic, muscarinic, ganglionic, or serotonergic receptors.
Furthermore, in the examine the cardiovascular effect of the main component of the oil, anethole isolated from on tested guinea pig fennel oil in inhibited arachidonic acid, collagen-, ADP- and U46619-induced aggregation, researchers found that application of anethole displayed comparable NO-independent vasorelaxant activity at antiplatelet concentrations.
Anethole also prevented thrombin-induced clot retraction at concentrations similar to fennel oil in comparison of U46619-induced aggregation (IC(50) from 4 to 147 microg ml(-1)). These results were confirmed in tested mice with application F. Vulgare essential oil and anethole in a subacute treatment of 30 mg kg(-1)day(-1) for 5 days.
F. Vulgare essential oil and anethole also showed significant antithrombotic activity in prevented paralysis induced by collagen-epinephrine intravenous injection with 70% and 83% protection, respectively.
In the rat model, both F. Vulgare essential oil and anethole (100 mg kg(-1) oral administration) provided significant protection toward ethanol-induced gastric lesions.
After taking into account of other co and confounders, togther with the collected information Dr. Tognolini M, the lead author said, " F. vulgare essential oil, and its main component anethole, a safe antithrombotic activity that seems due to their broad spectrum antiplatelet activity, clot destabilizing effect, and vasorelaxant action".
Further to reassess other cardiovascular activity of Foeniculum vulgare L, researchers at the UFR Physiologie-Pharmacologie, launched an investigation to compare the effects of Marrubium vulgare L. and Foeniculum vulgare L. in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR).
Interestingly, the oral application of Foeniculum extract exerted lowered the systolic blood pressure of SHR without induced change of normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY).
These results were probably associated with to function of Foeniculum in increased water, sodium, and potassium excretion.
More importantly, Foeniculum extract hypertensive efficacy was decreased substantially in rat and mice presented with N-nitro-L-arginine.
The results indicated that fennel demonstrated the vascular protective activity as a diuretic and a natriuretic.
Taken together, Fennel and its essential oil and bioactive compound anethole may be considered as a function substance in promoting cardiovascular and vascular activity, particularly in animal models with a high risk of cardiovascular disease.
Intake of fennel extract should be taken with extreme care as overdoses may induce liver toxicity.
