All About Green Tea: Green tea, in Prevention and Treatment of Alzheimer's disease

Green tea may an integrated form of treatment for patient with Alzheimer's disease through many mechanisms, a recent study proposed.

Green tea, considered as a functional food, linking numbers of health benefit has been reported by several renowned research and studies. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine ,or food, long term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, induced "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weaken immunity and painful case of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory. But a slice of ginger in the drink will neutralize the yin over expression in green tea.

Alzheimer's disease is a neuro-degenerative condition of loss or decrease of cognitive and memory functions due to aging.
According to the Maternal and Infant Health, ASL NA 3 SUD, epigallocatechin and gallic acid, (-)-Epigallocatechin-3-Gallate (EGCG), found in green tea exerted a strong anti-inflammatory and anti oxidative properties in protection against neuronal damage and brain edema.

The study also stated that green tea may also contribute to reduced risk and treatment of AD by ameliorated chronic viral infection, one of the cause in responsible for AD's neuropathology.

Dr. Mandel SA. the lead author and expert in green tea study said, "tea drinking may decrease the incidence of dementia, AD, and PD. In particular, its main catechin polyphenol constituent (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) has been shown to exert neuroprotective/neurorescue activities in a wide array of cellular and animal models of neurological disorders".

Other researchers suggested that the efficacy of epigallocatechin and gallic acid, (-)-Epigallocatechin-3-Gallate (EGCG) in reduced risk of AD may be attributed to
1. The antioxidant activity in ameliorate production of ROS in induced risk of oxidative stress which has been found to associate to production of lipid peroxidation, leading to abnormal deposition of amyloid β (Aβ) peptide

2. Free radical over expression in aging people also vulnerable to imbalance of antioxidant and ROS
may have a negatively direct interaction with proteins, nucleic acids, and other molecules and may also alter their structures and functions in inducing risk AD.

Indeed, as a single ingredient isolated from green tea, epigallocatechin and gallic acid, (-)-Epigallocatechin-3-Gallate (EGCG) have been found to cause toxicity in some cases in medical literature. Therefore taking the ingredient in long term and overdoses may have a implication of liver damage.

In a animal study to evaluate the efficacy of Caffeic acid in AD, mice rats randomly divided into three groups: i) control group, ii) AD model group and iii) caffeic acid group, mice fed with the phytochemical expressed a significant in increased learning deficit and cognitive function demonstrated by the Morris water maze task in compared control.

Additionally, fed mice also displayed of attenuated oxidative stress, inflammation, nuclear factor‑κB‑p65 protein expression involved inflammatory cytokins production and suppressed caspase‑3 activity induced cell death and other mechanisms in the rats with AD.

Interestingly, inflammatory process has shown to have an negative role in increased risk of AD, by causing neuroinflammation, including brain cells such as microglia and astrocytes and subsequently in promoted dysfunction and neuronal death. Therefore by suppressing production of inflammatory cytokins, caffeic acid expressed a significant reduction of AD risk.

The efficacy in contribution of cognitive improvement following caffeic acid application may be due to its antioxidant activity and restoration of cholinergic functions, as deficiency of cholinergic function has shown to effect cognition, behavior and activities of daily living

Taking altogether, there is no doubt that green process a neuro protective against the risk and progression of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) attributed to some of the major chemical constituents. But intake of single ingredient isolated from green tea should be taken with care.

All About Green Tea: Green Tea Hepatoptotective Activity

Please note that this article does not embrace the use of single and multi ingredients extracted from green tea, particularly in the overdose state.

Green tea may have a potentially hepoprotective effect in prevention and treatment of liver disease, renowned institutes postulated.

Liver disease is a reduced function in toxin elimination of liver as a result of damage or injure, causing by medication, viral infection,....

Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and Western world.

According to the joint study lead by theZhujiang Hospital of Southern Medical University Guangzhou, in the review of the data base of PubMed, CNKI, Wanfang and Weipu databases, regular green tea drinking is associated to a significant reduction in the risk of liver disease, including hepatocellular carcinoma, liver steatosis, hepatitis, liver cirrhosis and chronic liver disease.

Also, Green tea demonstrated a reduced risk of liver disease regardless of the race and geography of the patients resided such as Asian, American and European subgroups.
Unfortunately, in a mouse model, different doses of GT fractions and EGCG and a single dose of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) combined with EGCG, administered for 5 days to mice suggested that mice fed with combining a single high dose of EGCG with a single dose of LPS showed to induce liver injury.

Repeat injection of EGCG in the group also found to associate to mild liver injure, probably was attributed to the adverse effect of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), the study insisted.

Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG) is one of the major and powerful antioxidant of green tea found to be most effective cancer chemopreventive polyphenol in many studies posted on medical literature. However, the single ingredients extract has also been found to induce hepotoxocity and acute liver dysfunction in many occasions due to overdoses and long term usages.

Additionally, according to the Baylor College of Medicine and Dalhousie University, Halifax reported, "(There is) a case of acute impending liver failure in an adolescent male using a weight-loss product containing green tea extract" and "acute liver toxicity observed in individuals consuming supplements containing green tea extract".

Taking altogether, the conflict result of green tea in liver disease may be result of study design, group selection, sample size, doses intake,........People with liver disease should talk to a specialist of herbal products before consuming.

All About Green Tea: Green Tea and the Risk of Renal Disease

Green tea showed to inhibited or exhibited kidney function in toxin elimination in deteriorated renal function in patient with chronic renal disease, studies proposed.

Renal Disease is an impaired function in toxin elimination for more than a specific time as a result of kidney damage or injure.

Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and Western world. Adding a slice of ginger will be helpful to solve the problem.

In mice fed with a powdered diet containing green tea polyphenolic extract (0.1%) starting 3 days prior to CsA treatment (25 mg/kg, i.g. daily for 3 weeks).showed a decreased renal nuclear DNA-encoded oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) protein ATP synthase-β (AS-β)by 42%, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA)-encoded OXPHOS protein NADH dehydrogenase-3 (ND3) involved oxidize nutrients for energy conversion by 87%.

Flavanols (polyphenols) are rich phytochemicals isolated from green tea, particularly in the expression in form of most bioactive flavanol EGCG.

Oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) protein ATP synthase-β (AS-β) plays a key role in energy production and regulated the generation of free radicals, and apoptosis through respiratory chain.

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA)-encoded OXPHOS protein NADH dehydrogenase-3 (ND3) in reduced risk of gene mutation through oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS).

Dr. Rehman H, the lead author said," Green tea polyphenols markedly attenuated CsA-induced renal injury and improved renal function. Together, these results demonstrate that green tea polyphenols attenuate CsA-induced kidney injury, at least in part, through the stimulation of MB".
In support of the efficacy of green tea for treatment of renal disease, the study of F40 rats randomly divided into 4 groups. Group 1 acted as control; group 2 received contrast medium (intravenous iodixanol, 10 mL/kg, as a single dose); group 3 received contrast medium and then green tea extract for 3 days (10 mg/kg/d, intraperitoneal); and group 4 first received green tea and then contrast medium, researchers showed that group treated with green tea had significantly higher overall scores than the control group.

Treatment group also expressed a significant improvement in progression of renal degeneration caused by nephrotoxicity of contrast media.

Unfortunately, according to the joint study lead by the China Medical University, inhibited the elimination of indoxyl sulfate (IS) and p-cresyl sulfate (PCS), a highly protein-bound nephro-cardiovascular toxins in CRF rats.

Catechin, is another major chemical constituent isolated from Green tea (GT) and a popular beverage in China.

Indoxyl sulfate(IS), a circulating uremic toxin has found to associate to the development of glomerular sclerosis and interstitial fibrosis.

P-Cresyl sulfate (pCS) is also an uremic toxin generated by intestinal bacteria
which has an implication to worsen outcome of patients with chronic kidney disease and increased cardiovascular burden.

Furthermore, green tea injection of catechin.in experiment mice also showed a significantly increased the levels of serum creatinine (Cr) and blood urea nitrogen (BUN), an indication of further kidney damage after ingestion of green tea catechin.

Dr. Peng YH, the lead author said, "GT inhibited the elimination of nephro-cardiovascular toxins such as IS and PCS, and deteriorated the renal function in CRF rats".

Taking together, the conflict results of green tea in expression of chronic renal disease may be due to study design, the group sample, the subject selection doses administration,........., therefore patients with renal disease should be consult with specialists before taking.

All About Green Tea: Green Tea for Prevention and Treatment of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

Green tea may be considered as a functional food in lower risk and treatment for patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, a respectable institute opinionated.

Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease is a condition caused by over accumulated of fat in the liver.

Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and Western world. Adding a slice of ginger will solve the adversion.

According to the University of Connecticut, Storrs, the efficacy of green tea for treatment of obese patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is associated to polyphenolic catechins in induction of hypolipidemic, thermogenic, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activities.

These chemical compound have also found to mitigate the occurrence and progression of NAFLD.

Dr. Masterjohn C, the lead author said, "(The phytochemical compounds) demonstrating the hepatoprotective properties of green tea and its catechins and the proposed mechanisms by which these targeted dietary agents protect against NAFLD"

Furthermore, in mice fed on a high-fat diet for 24 weeks., then injected with EGCG (10, 20 and 40 mg·kg(-1)·d(-1), ip), for 4 weeks, researchers found that treated mice showed a significant improvement of high-fat diet in induced the body weight, grade 2 or 3 liver fatty degeneration (steatosis, lobular inflammation and ballooning), severe hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance..

The phytocheimcal EGCG, in dose-dependent also enhanced insulin clearance and upregulated IDE protein expression and enzyme activity in regulated levels of glucose in the liver of treated mice.

In fact EGCG not only promoted weigh loss but also attenuated symptoms of mice with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Promisingly, in the study of green tea polyphenols (GTP) on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in Zucker fatty (ZF) rats, researches also indicated that, GTP intervention not only decreased weight gain and significantly lowered visceral fat but also reduced fasting serum insulin, glucose and lipids levels, through ameliorated expression of hepatic TG accumulation and cytoplasmic lipid droplet as well as diminished hepatic lipogenesis and triglycerides out flux from liver.

Taking together, green tea has expressed a significant enhancement in reduced risk and treatment of
nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, through many aspects. But large amount intake regularly should be taken with care to prevent toxicity.

All About Green Tea: Green Tea in Reduced Risk and Treatment of Hypertension

Regular drinking of green tea may have a potential effect in maintaining normal blood pressure and reduced risk of hypertension , a recent study suggested.

Hypertension is abnormal high of blood pressure, one of the major risk factor in contributed early onset of cardiovascular disease.

Adding one slice of ginger will do the trick of neutralization.

Hypertension of male Wistar rats induced by the nitric oxide synthase inhibitor [N-nitro-L-arginine-methyl-ester (L-NAME); 20 mg/kg per day, orally, for 2 weeks], fed with green tea extract exhibited a strong effect in reduced hypertension (119 ± 1 mmHg) and higher renal sympathetic nerve activity (161 ± 12 spikes/s) than the control group (97 ± 2 spikes/s).
Green tea oral administration also showed a significant decreased in hypertensive parameter by ameliorated.arterial baroreceptor function and vascular and systemic oxidative stress.

Furthermore, in a total of 20 Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) rats at 13 weeks old with matabolic syndrome randomized into a saline treated group (OLETF; n = 10) and a group treated with decaffeinated-GTE (25 mg/kg/day) (GTE-OLETF; n = 10), group fed with decaffeinated-GTE significantly reduced BP (OLETF vs. GTE-OLETF; 130 ± 7 vs. 121 ± 3 mmHg, p = 0.01) in compared control fed with saline.

The study also suggested that fed mice with green tea also showed an anti hypertensive effect in reduced vascular reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation and NADPH in generation of ROS, as well as improving endothelium (cell lines the interior surface of blood vessels and lymphatic vessels)and lymphatic vessels dependent relaxation.

Dr. Ihm SH, the lead author said," (green tea extract) improved endothelial dysfunction and IR, and eventually lowered BP".

Taking together, there is no doubt that green tea processes a significant effect in reduced risk and treatment of hypertension through reduced oxidative stress and improved vascular relaxation as well as decreased metabolic syndrome in exaggerated hypertension.

All About Green Tea: Green Tea in Attenuated Risk of Metabolic Syndrome

Green tea may be served as functional food for reduced risk and treatment of metabolic syndrome, a renowned institute study suggested

Metabolic Syndrome is a group of risk factors used to calculate the incidence of early onset of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and Western world. Adding a slice of ginger will do the trick.

In a total of 35 obese participants with metabolic syndrome randomly assigned to receive one of the following for 8 weeks: green tea (4 cups per day), control (4 cups water per day), or green tea extract (2 capsules and 4 cups water per day), blood samples collected from green tea and green tea extract treated groups showed a significantly increased plasma antioxidant capacity (1.5 to 2.3 μmol/L and 1.2 to 2.5 μmol/L, respectively in compared to control group.

The study also found that the efficacy of green tea in ameliorated early progression of metabolic syndrome is attributed to the improved expression of serum antioxidant enzymes (glutathione peroxidase, glutathione, catalase) and plasma antioxidant capacity in inhibited free radicals in exhibition of pro inflammatory cytokins.

Furthermore, in the total of 55 obese men and women recruited, injection of 280 and 360 g GTRB provided daily totals of 123.2 and 158.4 mg caffeine, and 188.3 and 242.1 mg of epigallocatechin gallate significantly reduced expression of metabolic syndrome in attenuated weigh gain, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, triglycerides, and glucose concentrations.

More importantly, the study also found that administration of green tea also reduced levels of blood pressure in obese subjects but can not maintain the weigh loss after study.

Other researchers in the investigation of decaffeinated green tea extract (GTE) and voluntary running exercise (Ex) alone or in combination against obesity and metabolic syndrome in high fat (HF) fed C57BL/6J mice, insisted that combination of green tea injection and exercise treatment reduced final body mass (27.1% decrease) and total visceral fat mass (36.6% decrease), levels of fasting blood glucose (17% decrease), plasma insulin (65% decrease), and insulin resistance (65% decrease) compared to HF-fed mice.

Taking together, green tea may be one of best candidates used for prevention of onset and treatment of metabolic syndrome in adult population, but long term injection of large amount may induced liver and kidney toxicity as shown in previous articles.

All About Green Tea: Green Tea in Attenuated Risk of Hyperglycemia and Early Onset of Type 2 Diabetes

Green with a ton of phytochemicals has been found to process variuos health benefits reported by large numbers of research and study. However, long term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, inducing "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome"according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory. It is recommended to add a slice of ginger in your drink for a purpose of neutralization.

Recently study by renowned institute postulated that regular green tea intake may be associated to reduced risk of developed hyperglycemia in healthy individual and prevented early onset of diabetes in people with hyperglycemia.

According to the Third Military Medical University, regular consumption of green tea or green tea extract improved insulin sensitivity and glycaemic control in populations with diabetics.

In the review of literature found in data base of PUBMED, The Cochrane Library, EMBASE, ISI Web of Knowledge, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database and Chinese Scientific Journals Fulltext of 17 trials comprising a total of 1133 subjects suggested that green tea consumption significantly reduced the fasting glucose and hemoglobin A1c (Hb A1c) concentrations by -0.09 mmol/L and -0.30%, respectively.

In the trials with high Jadad score studies, green tea significantly reduced fasting insulin concentrations -1.16 μIU/mL in compared to non green tea drinker group.

Other, in the mice study to evalaute green tea drink (T2 and T3) prepared by adding catechins and epigallocatechin gallate, major constituents isolated from green tea (EGCG) @ 550 mg/500 mL against non drinker group acted as control (T1), mice fed with T2 and T3 expressed a significant reduced cholesterol and LDL levels and serum glucose and insulin levels with no difference in all functional drink groups but control.

Dr. Ahmad RS, the lead author said, "In contrast to lipid profile, experimental drink containing EGCG reduced the trait better than catechins based functional drink".

Furthermore, the compared diabetic effects of 3 selected tea water extracts (TWE) and tea pomace extracts (TPE) and by on rat intestinal α-glucosidase activity in vitro as well as hypoglycemic effects in vivo, insisted that in male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats fed with tea extracts improved levels of blood glucose level at 30 min after oral intake (0.5 g/kg body wt) in compared to the control in sucrose-loaded SD rat, probably through activation of antioxidants properties in free radical scavenging.

Indeed, tea pomace extract in the study exerted a significantly inhibition of intestinal α-glucosidase, in delayed glucose absorption resulting in suppressing postprandial hyperglycemia.

No doubtfully, green tea processed bioactives may be used as potentially nutraceutical products in prevent the risk of hyperglycemia in healthy people and early onset of in people with prediabetes.
