Ginger, the Anti Gastric Cancer Natural Remedy with No Side Effects, Scientists Reveal

Scientists may have found a pungent spice which processes the potential for the prevention and treatment of gastric cancer, some studies suggested.

Gastric cancer is also known as stomach cancer, a medical and chronic condition caused by the cell growth irregularly and disorderly in the stomach tissues due to the alternation of DNA.

Researchers do not know the exact causes of gastric cancer, either they know people with the same health conditions, in the same family, some are susceptible to the DNA alternation, while others do not.

At the early stage, gastric cancer cell which has grown on the surface of the inner lining of the stomach does not cause any symptoms due to the very small size of the tumor.

However, at the later stage, the large tumor size may suppress the nearby blood vessels and nerve cells, leading to internal bleeding and severe pain. Also, cancer cells may also travel a distance away from the stomach to infect other healthy tissue and organs, leading to a secondary metastasis.

Common sites metastases of liver cancer are liver (48%), peritoneum (32%), lung (15%), and bone (12%).

According to the American Cancer Society, in 2018, approximately 26,240 new cases of gastric cancer will be diagnosed (16,520 in men and 9,720 in women), and gastric cancer causes the death of 10,800 people including 6,510 men and 4,290 women.

The 5 years survival rate of localized gastric cancer is 67%, compared to the advanced stage of only 31%.

Although there are many risk factors involved the onset of gastric cancer, epidemiologically, some researchers suggested the change of lifestyle associated with the promotion of the Western diet is the major prevalent risk factor in the Western world.

Dr, P. Bertuccio, the lead scientist in the compared the gastric cancer risk of the Western and ‘Prudent/healthy’ diet wrote, "A favorable role on GC emerged for the ‘Prudent/healthy’, with an odds ratio (OR) of 0.75 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.63–0.90], for the highest versus the lowest category. Similar results emerged for separate anatomical subtypes. An unfavorable role on GC emerged for the ‘Western/unhealthy’ dietary pattern, with an OR of 1.51 (95% CI: 1.21–1.89)".

And, "There is a ∼2-fold difference in GC risk between a ‘Prudent/healthy’ diet-rich in fruits and vegetables, and a ‘Western/unhealthy’ diet-rich in starchy foods, meat, and fats".

The results strongly suggested the protective role of high fruits and vegetable diet against the onset of gastric cancer.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of gastric cancer examined the role of ginger in combatting GI cancer, with little or no side effects.

Ginger and its active components including 6-gingerol and 6-shogaol exerted strong anticancer activities against GI cancer.

The anticancer activity of ginger and its isolated compounds attributed to the ability to modulation the proteins, cytokines, matrix, and enzymes associated with the pro-apoptosis, cancer cell cycle arrest anti-proliferation, and cell death programming.

In vitro, ginger extract and its active components also demonstrated the chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic potency against gastric cancer cell line.

In order to reveal more details of ginger and its bioactive against the gastric cancer cells, researchers assess the [6]-Gingerol anti-gastric tumor activity.

According to the A CCK-8 assay, [6]-gingerol inhibited the cell viability of HGC-27 cells in a dose-dependent manner.

The Colony formation assay indicated that pretreatment of [6]-gingerol prior to Ionizing radiation (IR) decreased the survival and proliferation of HGC-27 cells.

The combination of [6]-gingerol with IR enhanced IR-induced cell cycle arrest at the G2/M phase by 53.5% compared to 41.3% of IR alone.

Pretreatment of [6]-gingerol increased IR-induced apoptosis compared with IR alone.

The efficacy of [6]-gingrol in inhibiting gastric cancer cells was attributed to the interference of proteins associated with cancer cell survivals and proliferation and exhibiting the genes that suppress tumor growth, promote cancer cell degradation and program cancer cell death, observed by the Western blotting.

Dr. the lead scientist, after taking into account co and confounders, said, ":[6]-gingerol enhanced radiosensitivity of GC cells, and that the mechanisms involved at least G2/M phase arrest and apoptosis induction".

Taken altogether, ginger processed [6] gingerol may be considered a function remedy for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for treatment of gastric cancer with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of a large size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Alfalfa, A Potent and Natural Dietary Antioxidants

Herbal alfalfa may have a profound and positive effect in enhancing the expression of antioxidant in the body, some scientists suggested.

Antioxidants are stable molecules which inhibit oxidation induced by free radicals.

A free radical is a highly reactive atom with a single electron in the outer ring.

Free radicals produced in our body is a natural process derived either from essential metabolism through the processes of food intake or from external sources through directly contacting the skin or the air we breathe including exposure to X-rays, ozone, cigarette smoking, air pollutants, and industrial chemicals.

Some foods are antioxidants producers such as fruits and vegetable and whole grain, while others such as processed meats, alcohol are radicals producers. Particularly, fats and oils can easily be oxidized if they are cooked in high heat.

In order to counter the overexpression of free radicals which add to the body's burden, our body produces enzymes antioxidants and metal carrier proteins to neutralize them before they can cause damage.

Depending on the degrees of free radical invasion, antioxidant enzymes can be categorized into first, second, third and even fourth line of defense.

Dr. O.M, in the examine the antioxidant defense wrote, "The role and effectiveness of the first line defense antioxidants which basically include superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) is important and indispensable in the entire defense strategy of antioxidants, especially in reference to superoxide anion radical (*O2) which is perpetually generated in normal body metabolism, particularly through the mitochondrial energy production pathway (MEPP)".

The statement clearly suggested that in healthy individual antioxidant enzymes synthesized form our body is good enough to protect the body from bombardments of free radicals.

However, for people with a weakened immune system, chronic illness, dietary sources of antioxidants may be needed.

Oxidative stress is a result of the imbalance of free radicals and antioxidants in the body. The syndrome is either caused by overexpression of free radicals or depressed levels of antioxidant or both.

Oxidative stress has been found to induce widespread damage due to a set of a chain reaction auto-catalytically by free radicals that attacks the lipid bilayers of the cell walls, induces lipid, protein damage and alternation of cell DNA, leading to the onset of chronic diseases, including cancers.

Alfalfa is a flowering plant in the genus Medicago, belongings to the family Fabaceae.

The herb has been cultivated all over the world as hay for cattle feeding. The leaves, sprouts, and seeds to make medicine has been used in traditional medicine over thousands of year for the treatment of high cholesterol, asthma, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, enhance digestive system, bleeding disorder, kidney, and urinary tract infection, etc.

North America aboriginal has used Alfalfa seed as food, such as making bread and mush.

In the reaffirming the herbal alfalfa antioxidant activity especially scavenging activity for hydroxyl radical and DPPH radical, researchers launched a study to determine whether a lyophilized aqueous extract of alfalfa or Medicago sativa L. could exert antioxidant activity against carbon tetrachloride-induced oxidative stress and liver injury in rats.

Before injecting the lyophilized aqueous extract of alfalfa, rats treated by CCl (4) showed a significant increase of serum of oxidative stress markers observed by the levels of transaminase, ALP, bilirubin, lipid profile. and liver MDA accompanied by the decline of antioxidant status in liver non-protein sulfhydryl (NP-SH); and total protein (TP) contents.

Pretreatment with alfalfa and silymarin for three weeks prior to the administration of CCl (4) significantly prevented the increase of oxidative markers by reducing the oxidative stress indicated by elevated NP-SH and TP concentration of the antioxidant liver enzyme.

Futhermore, the incidence of liver lesion induced by the injection of CCL(4) also reduced by the pretreatment of alfalfa extract.

Application of alfalfa extracts also exerted a potent scavenging activity against hydroxyl radical and DPPH radical.

These results indicated that alfalfa may be considered a novel natural antioxidant. Dr.Al-Dosari MS wrote in the final report, " alfalfa extract possesses hepatoprotective and antioxidative stress properties possibly through its antioxidant phytochemical constituents and substantiates its use in various liver disorders as a hepatoprotector".

Additionally, researchers at the University of Life Sciences in Lublin, in the testing antioxidant effect of a dietary protein-xanthophylls (PX) concentrate of alfalfa on raw meat launched an evaluation by adding the concentration in turkey diet.

The study included 120 turkeys assigned randomly assigned to 3 groups (group I-control group; group II--with 1.5% supplementation of the protein-xanthophylls (PX) concentrate; group III--with 3% supplementation of the protein-xanthophylls (PX) concentrate).

The addition of protein-xanthophylls (PX) concentration of alfalfa to a turkey diet protects the deterioration of breast and thigh meat quality.

Also, by examining the changes in color, oxymyoglobin content, TBARS, and oxidation-reduction potential values, researchers said " the inclusion of the concentration to turkey diets acts as an antioxidant in the raw meat.

Taken altogether, alfalfa may be considered a natural antioxidant which improves the antioxidant profile in the body against the overexpression of free radicals in the initiation of oxidative stress.

Honey Improves the sleep Quality Naturally with No Side Effects, Scientists Say

Sleep disorders are conditions can be acute or chronic. Most of us experience sleep disturbance sometimes due to some specific and unspecific events. However, chronic sleep disorders are the changes in the way that you sleep.

Most people with chronic sleep disorder experience symptoms of excessive daytime sleepiness, irregular breathing or increased movement during sleep, and difficulty falling asleep.

Sleep quality can be measured by examing the.way that you sleep, including the time period that you need to fall to sleep and how many times you have awakened and drifted back to sleep during night sleep.

According to the statistic provided by the National Sleep Foundation’s inaugural Sleep Health Index, 45 % of Americans have poor or insufficient sleep. that affects their daily activities at least once in the past seven days.

The National Sleep Foundation continued, "...despite sleeping within the recommended number of hours a night, 35 percent of Americans report their sleep quality as “poor” or “only fair.” Twenty percent of Americans reported that they did not wake up feeling refreshed on any of the past seven days".

What causes poor quality of sleep in American? Some researchers suggested these may be results from occupation and occupation stress.

Dr, Eui-Joong Kim, the lead scientists, in examing the stressors' effect on sleep quality said, "It is possible that different types of stressors may bring with them different impacts on sleep" and " (a) some aspect of daily stress (such as job stress) and life events (such as divorce, bereavement), (b) experimentally imposed stressors (laboratory-based studies), and (c) traumatic stressors (such as disasters or PTSD)".

Additionally, " The first and last categories typically involve a longer duration of the stress exposure with varying levels of intensity; the experimental stressors, on the other hand, typically involve a short-term exposure to mild stress".

These results partly explained why over 20% of American suffer from poor quality of sleep.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

With an aim to find a natural compound for the improvement of sleep quality, researchers compared the effects of a single nocturnal dose of 3 honey products (eucalyptus honey, citrus honey, or Labiatae honey) to placebo (silan date extract) in children with upper respiratory tract infections (URIs).

The study included 300 children aged 1 to 5 years with URIs, nocturnal cough, and illness duration of ≤ 7 days from 6 general pediatric community clinics.

Eligible children received a single dose of 10 g of eucalyptus honey, citrus honey, Labiatae honey, or placebo administered 30 minutes before bedtime. There was a significant improvement in sleep quality from the night before treatment to the night of treatment in all 3 honey products and the placebo group.

However, the improvement was greater in the honey groups.

Honey products were rated higher than the silan date extract for symptomatic relief of their children's nocturnal cough and sleep difficulty due to URI, According to the survey returned from parents.

Dr. Cohen HA the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounders, said, "Honey may be a preferable treatment for a cough and sleep difficulty associated with childhood URI".

Furthermore, in order to reveal more information of honey effects in cough and sleep difficulty, researchers compared the effects of a single nocturnal dose of buckwheat honey or honey-flavored dextromethorphan (DM) with no treatment on nocturnal cough and sleep difficulty associated with childhood upper respiratory tract infections.

The study included 105 children aged 2 to 18 years with upper respiratory tract infections, nocturnal symptoms, and illness duration of 7 days or less were given a single dose of buckwheat honey, honey-flavored DM, or no treatment administered 30 minutes prior to bedtime.

Honey treatment group demonstrated significant differences in symptom improvement between treatment groups.

In paired comparisons, honey was significantly superior to no treatment for cough frequency and the combined score.

And, according to the survey returned by the parents, honey is most favorable for symptomatic relief of their child's nocturnal cough and sleep difficulty in children with upper respiratory tract infection.

Taken altogether, honey may be considered a functional remedy for the improvement of sleep quality, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Cayenne Processes Both Hypo and Hyper Tension Function In Dose Dependent- Manner

Herbal cayenne processed a significant amount of bioactive compound Capsicum may have a positive and profound effect on normalizing the levels of blood pressure, according to studies.

Hypertension is a medical condition of abnormally high blood pressure, one of the members of the cluster of conditions associated with heart disease and stroke.

Depending on the reading, some researchers suggested if you are in stage one of high blood pressure, your risk of cardiovascular disease is increased by 10% over the next 10 years.

According to the statistics, in the US, approximately 75 million people or 1 of 3 U.S. adults has high blood pressure. High blood pressure can be modified by change of lifestyle.

Most common risk factors of high blood pressure are a poor diet with high in salt and potassium and low vitamin D, physically inactive, excessive alcohol drinking, use of Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs), and aging.

However, not all people with some of the above conditions will develop high blood pressure.

Treatment of stage 1 and 2 hypertension include daily intake of diuretics which lower high blood pressure by reducing sodium and fluid through increased urinary secretion and Bumetanide (Bumex) Chlorthalidone (Hygroton) or Chlorothiazide (Diuril).

Some patients may experience side effects such as a cough, diarrhea or constipation, dizziness or nervousness, tired, weak, and nausea or vomiting.

In a serious case, high blood pressure medication may induce erectile dysfunction. If you are taking high blood pressure medications, please make sure you have discussed the side effects with your doctor.

Some researchers in the concern of the widespread of hypertension in the Western world suggested that the condition may correlate to the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades.

Dr. Adriana Monge and colleagues examined the Western and Modern Mexican diet pattern and risk of high blood pressure, wrote, "The multivariable-adjusted odds of hypertension in the highest quartile of the Western (W) pattern were 24% higher than the odds for individuals in the lowest quartile"

And, "women in the highest quartile of the MM pattern had 15% higher odds than women in the lowest quartile. The Fruits & Vegetables (FV) pattern was not significantly associated with hypertension".

These results clearly indicated a strong connection of the Western diet pattern in the increased risk of hypertension compared to the lower risk of fruits and vegetable group.

Cayenne is also known as Cayenne Pepper, a red, hot chili pepper, belonging to Capsicum annuum, the family Solanaceae, native to sub-tropical and tropical regions.

The pepper has been used in traditional medicine to increases metabolism, enhance circulatory system and stomach and the intestinal tract, adjust blood pressure, lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, treat frostbite, muscles, arthritis, rheumatism, low back pain, strains, sprains, bruises, and neuralgia, etc.

The chemical constituents of Cayenne include capsaicin, capsacutin oil, solaine, xanthenes, oleic acid, palmitic acid, etc.

Epidemiological studies linking cayenne in reducing hypertension have not been conclusive, the mechanism of this effect is still a mystery.

Researchers on finding herbal medicine for the treatment of hypertension with no side effects examined the traditionally used medicinal plants against key enzymes relevant for hyperglycemia and hypertension.

Compared to other herbal plants, pepper (Capsicum) inhibited significantly the hypertension relevant angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE).

All evaluated pepper (Capsicum) genus exhibited both anti-hyperglycemia and anti-hypertension potential.

The anti-high blood pressure of cayenne probably is associated with the major compound capsaicin, chlorogenic acid, and hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives.
However, in pig study, application capsaicin isolated from the cayenne showed a significantly increased mean arterial blood pressure compared with controls, and a decrease in CGRP synthesis and release contributes to the elevated blood pressure.

Also, there are 2 cases reported of an arterial hypertensive crisis in a patient with large ingestion of peppers and chili peppers the day before and a 19-year-old Italian man with abundant ingestion of peppers and of chili peppers the preceding day.

Additonally, overdoses of cayenne not only induced arterial hypertensive crisis but also acute myocardial infarction with high levels of thyroid stimulating hormone.

The findings strongly suggested cayenne processed an antihypertensive and hypertensive effect in a dose-dependent manner.

This dual mechanisms presented in cayenne may not be explained by conventional medicine. However, traditional Chinese medicine stated cayenne, yang in nature, promotes Qi movement of blood. In a healthy individual, smooth movement of qi reduces the unnecessary blood pressure in blood transportation. On the other hand, if the movement of qi is blocked due to the presence of a high amount of cholesterol that narrows the blood vessel, in inducing higher blood pressure.

The traditional Chinese medicine continued, injection of a high amount of cayenne pepper can cause constriction of blood vessels, leading to narrowing blood flow and risk of hypertension

Taken altogether, there is no doubt that cayenne may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, but the amount of intake should only be prescribed by related field specialists.

Whole Food Papaya, the Best Anti Diabetes Functional Food, Studies Found

Papaya may be the next generation of whole food for the prevention and treatment of type II diabetes with no side effects, some studies suggested.
Diabetes is a condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.

Most cases of type II diabetes are either caused by cells in pancreas died off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.

In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

Epidemiological studies suggested that obesity, family history, ethnicity, the increase in age, gestation diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome. and high blood pressure is the most common risk factors associated with the onset of the prediabetes and type II diabetes.

Dr. Stephen S. Rich, in the article "the genetics of diabetes and Its complications", suggested that type II diabetes may be a genetically related disease. Unlike type 1 diabetes, in which there seems to be an autoimmune process, type 2 diabetes is a disease of relative rather than absolute insulin deficiency. Genes involved in type 2 diabetes, with the most promising, replicated findings on chromosomes are 1q21-q24, 2q37, 12q24 and 20.

Untreated and unmanageable type II diabetes may induce complications of the onset of cardiovascular disease, nerve damage (neuropathy). kidney damage (nephropathy), eye damage (retinopathy). foot damage and kin conditions.

Medication used for the treatment of type II diabetes is focused on alleviating the symptoms and improving quality of life and slowing down the progression of the disease.

If you currently intake medicine for treatment of diabetes, please sure you know all the side effects for the preventive measure.
Papaya is a species of Carica Papaya, belonging to the family Caricaceae and native to the tropics of the Americas, and was first cultivated in Mexico and several centuries

Unripe pawpaw fruit (Carica papaya) not only inhibited α-amylase, α-glucosidase but also reduced lipid peroxidation in a dose-dependent manner, in rat pancreas(1).
The key enzymes of α-amylase, α-glucosidase, involved in the digestion of carbohydrates, have been linked to the onset of type 2 diabetes. Inhibition of these enzymes can significantly reduce the post-prandial increase of blood glucose and have been also used for management of blood glucose level in type 2 diabetic and borderline patients by therapists (2).
In streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats study, the aqueous extract of leaves of C. papaya administered strongly controlled blood glucose levels(3), through the prevention of hepatocyte disruption, as well as accumulation of glycogen and lipids via its hypoglycemic and antioxidant effect(4)

In a new study, conducted by the researchers at the Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute, fermented papaya preparation was tested whether it improves dermal wound healing outcomes in adult diabetic mice by preventing the risk of infections(5).
The result was astonishing, the fermentation not only up-regulated the Sp1 DNA binding activity(modulating the cellular response to DNA damage) in Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) but also the protein and mRNA expression of Rac2(regulates a number of cellular functions)(5).

A randomized controlled clinical trial conducted at the Cardiac Centre, ANDI Centre of Excellence for Biomedical and Biomaterials Research and Department of Biosciences University of Mauritius, suggested that oral administration of 6g FPP®/day for a period of 14 weeks could improve the general health status of several organs targeted by oxidative stress during diabetes and the supplement may be used in the management the complications of diabetes such as cardiovascular disease, neurological disease and other conditions worsened by overt inflammation and oxidative stress(6).

Taken altogether, unripe, fermented papaya and its' leaves may be effective in diabetic management by controlling the levels of glucose and reduced risk of complications.
Some Western researchers insisted that large sample size and multicenter studies are necessary to validate its effectiveness by identifying the ingredients which are comparable to recently pharmaceutical medicine in use because geography, environment, time of harvest, etc. may influence the concentration of the food cultivation.
In fact, herbalists have long acknowledged that the external factors (mentioned above) may alter the quality of the herbs and foods by classifying these difference either through price or formula differentiation.

Indeed, the effectiveness with little or no adverse side effects of the formula is not the concentration of individual herb and a herb itself but the interaction of all ingredients in a herb and herbs in the same formula. Extracting only one ingredient of the herb for treatment of certain diseases may be effective but enhances complicated consequences.

Phytochemical Allicin, the Anti Colon Cancer Bioactive compound

Phytochemicals may be the next potential sources of a new medicine for the treatment of diseases with little or no side effects.
Phytochemical allicin may be the next natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of colon cancer with no side effects, some scientists suggested.
Colon is a large intestine formed part of the digestive system where water is reabsorbed and waste material is stored as feces before being removed.
Colon cancer is the medical condition characterized by the cell growth irregularly and disorderly due to change of DNA.
Most cases of colon cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the colon. However, at the later stage, colon cancer may cause secondary metastasis, leading to cancers forming on other tissues and organs, a distance away through lymph and blood.
According to the statistics, the risk of colon cancer has been rising in younger age groups coincidently with the declining rate in older age groups.
Sadly, the proportion of cases diagnosed in individuals younger than age 50 increased from 6% in 1990 to 11% in 2013. Most of these cases (72%) occur in people who are in their 40s.
The causes of colon cancer are unknown, Some researchers suggested that the widespread colon cancer over the past few decades in the developed world probably is the result of the promotion of the Western diet that leads to obesity.
Dr. E E Frezza, the lead scientist at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Cente, in the study to examine obesity in the risk colon cancer wrote, "Obesity is a risk factor for many diseases" and "Visceral abdominal fat has been identified as the essential fat depot for pathogenetic theories that relate obesity and colon cancer".

And, "Although WC is better established as a measure of obesity than BMI, the evidence for colon cancer risk is not secure on this point; combining BMI and WC measurements would appear, at present, to be the wisest approach for colon cancer risk assessment".

The finding strongly suggested that obesity is a major risk factor of colon cancer.
Allicin is phytochemical containing sulfur in the class of organosulfur compound, found abundantly in onion and garlic.
With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of colon cancer with no side effects, researchers at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem examined the effects of allicin on cell proliferation of colon cancer cell lines HCT-116, LS174T, HT-29, and Caco-2.

Injection of allicin preparation exerted a time- and dose-dependent cytotoxic effect on these cells at concentrations ranging from 6.2 to 310 ÎĽM.
Treatment with allicin induced HCT-116 apoptotic cell death through reducing the numbers of the chromosome in the DNA in the cancer cells, increasing the function and proteins associated with cell apoptosis and decreasing the expression of proteins involved cell proliferation and migration.
Futhermore, allicin treatment also induced cell death through cancer cell degradation.

Moreover, allicin application also activated the protein which protects the normal cell against oxidative damage triggered by injury and inflammation and reduces the function of the phytochemicals in the inhibition of the HCT-116 proliferation without affecting the cancer apoptosis.

In vivo and vitro, researchers evaluated the combined effect of allicin and CPT-11 against the human colon cancer cell line LoVo.

Allicin treatment alone inhibited the growth of LoVo cells in a dose and time-dependent manner, with an IC50 value of 32.23, 10.74, 6.58 mg x L(-1) at 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h, respectively.

The apoptosis rate of LoVo cells increased progressively as the cells were treated with increasing concentration of allicin in 24 h, while the apoptosis rate achieved peak value when the cells were treated with allicin at the concentration of 8 mg x L(-1) in 48 h.

These results strongly suggested that low concentrations of allicin (< 4 mg x L(-1)) leads to G2/M cell cycle arrest, and higer concentrations ( > 4 mg x L(-1)) exerts G1 + G2/M cell cycle arrest in 24 h.

Compared with a single use of CPT-11, the combined use of CPT-11 and allicin (4.0, 8.0 mg x L(-1), respectively) showed increasing cytotoxicity on the LoVo cells, with IC50 of 24 h decreasing from 47.5 to 7.4 and 7.2 mg x L(-1), respectively.

Dr. Gao Y, the lead scientist, wrote in the final report, "Allicin has significant anti-proliferation effect on human colon cancer cell line LoVo by induction of apoptosis and arrestment of the cell cycle and can enhance the cytotoxicity of CPT-11 on the colon cancer LoVo cell".

Taken altogether, phytochemical Allicin may be considered a bioactive compound for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of colon cancer, pending to large sample and multicenter human study.

Herbal Ginger, the Natural Antibiofilm Remedy with No Side Effects

Scientists may have a kitchen remedy which processes a potential to improve the immune function against infection, some studies suggested.

A biofilm is a system that can be adapted internally to environmental conditions by its inhabitants. In other words, biofilm-forming from bacteria is one of the common forms of bacterial infection affecting up to 80% of human bacterial infections.

In biology, biofilm used by the bacteria as a natural defense mechanism of bacteria to survive under harsh environments, by attaching to a solid surface in a large community, including the skin, teeth, and mucosa.

Bacterial initiates biofilm formation with an aim to greatly enhance survival in hosts and cause chronic infections, leading to long-term inflammation and tissue damages.

The formation of a biofilm of bacteria may go through 2 stages, the adhesion phase is the stage that the bacteria attach to the surface or accumulates on a surface, After the adhesion phase, the bacteria enter the colonial phase, where the bacteria continue to grow, leading to the formation of dense bacterial aggregates.
Dr. Li XH, the lead scientist in examing the new anti-biofilm agents, said, "In biofilms, microorganisms become much more resistant to antimicrobial treatments, harsh environmental conditions, and host immunity".

And, "Currently, it is believed over 80% of chronic infectious diseases are mediated by biofilms, and it is known that conventional antibiotic medications are inadequate at eradicating this biofilm-mediated infection".

Scientists on finding a natural compound with anti-biofilm activity for the treatment of microbial infection evaluated the ginger anti-biofilm formation effects.

Injection of ginger exerted a strong inhibition against Pseudomonas aeruginosa PA14 biofilm formation.

The anti-biofilm activity of ginger caused a reduction of 39–56% when the ginger extract was added to the culture.

The ginger extract also decreased the production of extracellular polymeric substances, the fundamental component that determines the physiochemical properties of a biofilm, according to the chemical analysis and confocal laser scanning microscopy.

Furthermore, ginger extract formed noticeably less rugose colonies on agar plates containing Congo red and facilitated swarming motility on soft agar plates.

The ginger extract also inhibited biofilm formation in both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

The efficacy of ginger extract was attributed to the reduced level of a second messenger, bis-(3′-5′)-cyclic dimeric guanosine monophosphate in the induction of biofilm formation.

Also, surface biofilm cells formed with ginger extract detached more easily with surfactant than did those without ginger extract.

The results strongly support the use of ginger as a broad spectrum biofilm inhibitor, in the reduction of bacterial biofilm formation, a major cause of serious health problems.

In order to reveal more information about the ginger effect against biofilm formation, researchers examined the bioactive compounds on Candida albicans.

6-gingerol, 8-gingerol, and 6-shogaol effectively inhibited biofilm formation and 6-shogaol at 10 ÎĽg/ml significantly reduced C. albicans biofilm formation with no harming the planktonic cell growth.

Moreover, 6-gingerol and 6-shogaol inhibited hyphal growth in embedded colonies and free-living planktonic cells and prevented cell aggregation.

Additionally, 6-gingerol and 6-shogaol reduced C. albicans virulence in a nematode infection model without causing toxicity at the tested concentrations.

Dr. Jin-Hyung Lee,, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "These results highlight the antibiofilm and antivirulence activities of the ginger components, 6-gingerol and 6-shogaol, against a drug-resistant C. albicans strain".

Taken altogether, ginger processed a high amount of bioactive compound may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention of bacterial infection by inhibiting the biofilm activity of micro pathogens.
