Herbal Ashwagandha Improves Nonrestorative Sleep in Human Study

Why sleep is so important? you might already know that a normal night of sleep is about eight hours as recommended by most doctors.

Why it is important, because during sleep our bodies repair the wear and tear of muscle tissue, consolidate memories, and release hormones to regulate our growth and appetites and enhance the immune system, etc. sleep disorders can reduce the functions of the immune system in fighting against disease and sickness.

Nonrestorative sleep (NRS) is a condition in which the sleep has not been sufficiently refreshing or restorative upon waking, despite sleeping an adequate number of hours, accompanied by daytime impairment, pain, fatigue, and electroencephalogram (EEG) arousals in non-REM sleep in some patients.

In other words, NRS is a peripheral symptom of insomnia or as a feature of medical conditions like fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.
* Insomnia
Insomnia is a sign and symptom of sleep disorder in which a person has difficulty falling asleep and/or staying asleep or sleep of poor quality, including nonrestorative sleep, which can lead to substantial impairments in the quality of life and functional capacity of an individual.

Most adults have experienced insomnia sometimes in their life. According to statistic, more than 30% of the population suffers from insomnia, one in three people suffer from some form of insomnia during their lifetime, and women suffer from insomnia more often than men.

* Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia, according to the American College of Rheumatology 1990 Criteria for the Classification of Fibromyalgia in the newly proposed criteria for the classification of fibromyalgia are 1) widespread pain in combination with 2) tenderness at 11 or more of the 18 specific tender point sites(a) as a result in responding to pressure.

* Chronic fatigue syndrome
Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a medical disorder that cannot be explained by an underlying medical condition, characterized by persistently extreme fatigue that never goes away regardless of treatment for at least 6 months.

The exact causes of chronic fatigue syndrome are unknown. However, some researchers suggested that the conditions are the results of viral infection and chronic stress syndrome.

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the treatment of sleep disorders, researchers examined the effects of Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) on patients with nonrestorative sleep (NRS).
According to the Restorative Sleep Questionnaire-weekly version (RSQ-W) questionnaire and other test assays, in a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled interventional study in NRS population, a daily supplement of ashwagandha extract compared with placebo in subjects with NRS at 6 weeks from baseline,
* Exerted Anti-anxiety effects.

* Relieved insomnia and stress-induced depression.

* Reduced cortisol concentrations and the immunosuppressive effect of stress.

* Lowered CRP by inhibiting the expression of pro-inflammatory responses in the body.

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a therapy for the treatment of nonrestorative sleep (NRS), pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Ashwagandha, an Adjunct Therapy for Cystic Fibrosis

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common fatal genetic disease affecting mostly the lung in children and young adults, leading to difficulty breathing and coughing up mucus due to frequent lung infections.

However, the condition has also been found in the pancreas, liver, kidneys, and intestine.

According to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Patient Registry, more than 30,000 people are living with cystic fibrosis in the US.

Believe it or not, most cases of CF are diagnosed by age 2.

The most common symptoms are depending on the location of cystic fibrosis including
sinus infections, poor growth, fatty stool, clubbing of the fingers and toes.

In male adults, the condition also induces infertility as a result of the blockage or absence of the sperm canal.

Conventionally, as of today, there is no cure for CF. Most cases of CF caused by lung infection are treated intravenously, inhaled, or by mouth.

In severe cases, a lung transplant may be the only option.

Although most cases of CF are associated with a genetic preposition, environment, lifestyle, and age are also 2 main factors that increase the risk of CF.

According to statistics provided by the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, approximately 1 in every 3,600 children born in Canada has CF.

In age perspective,
* 60% of patients are diagnosed in the first year of life, and 90% by 10 years of age.

* More than 47% of all Canadians with CF are over the age of 18 years.

* As of 2002, the median age of survival of Canadians with CF is 37 years of age.

In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the treatment of diseases associated with genetic disorders, researchers examined the effects of Withaferin A (WFA), a steroidal lactone from the plant Withania Somnifera L. Dunal on cystic fibrosis.

According to the tested analysis, WFA blocks platelet-activating factor (PAF)-induced activation of NFκB in the induction of inflammation through the innate immune cells and inflammatory T cells.

More precisely, WFA inhibited the NFκB activation that leads to a reduction of the increased expression of IL-8 and NFκB subunit p65 translocation involved in inflammation.

In other words, WFA demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity in the cystic fibrosis model.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, "the airways of CF patients can be specifically targeted for delivery of therapeutics, we propose that WFA should be further studied as an anti-inflammatory agent in models of CF-related inflammation mediated by NFκB".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha processed a high amount of bioactive compound WFA may be considered supplements for the treatment of cystic fibrosis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Bilberry Protects Your Gum Against Gingival Inflammation

Gingivitis or gingival inflammation is a condition of inflammation of the gum caused by overexpression of plaques accumulated on your teeth that irritate the gingiva. Over time, the gum of an infected person has become swollen and bleed easily.

In severe cases, the condition can lead to periodontal disease, inducing tooth decay or loss of the tooth.

Most of the cases of gingivitis are associated with poor hygiene, particularly in people who smoke.

Patients can reverse gingivitis if they follow a good oral health habit, including brushing at least twice a day, flossing daily, and getting regular dental checkups.

Most common symptoms of gingivitis including swollen gums with dusky red or dark red color and bleeding easily when brush or floss, particularly breath-breath.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, smoking is an important cause of severe gum disease in the US.

Dr. Fouad H. Al-Bayaty, the lead scientist in the study of "The Influence of Cigarette Smoking on Gingival Bleeding and Serum Concentrations of Haptoglobin and Alpha 1-Antitrypsin" wrote,
"Duration of smoking (years) and the cotinine level in serum showed a significant correlation with plaque index. The present analysis demonstrated that the duration of smoking in years, but not the number of cigarettes smoked per day, was associated with reduced gingival bleeding in smokers".

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

With an aim to find a natural source for the treatment of gingival inflammation, researchers investigated the effect of bilberry consumption on the outcome of routine dental clinical parameters such as inflammation, bleeding on probing (BOP), and biomarkers of inflammation.

The study included individuals who did not receive standard of care treatment allocated to either a placebo group or to groups that consumed either 250 or 500 g bilberries daily over seven days compared to the placebo group consumed an inactive product (starch).

During the study, The mean of the groups that consumed either 250 or 500 g of bilberries/day showed a reduction in BOP before and after consumption of test product over 1 week was 41% and 59% compared to 31% in the placebo group, and 58% in the standard of a care reference group.

The group that consumed 500 g of bilberries/day also showed a significant reduction of the pro-inflammatory cytokine levels compared to consumed 250 g of bilberries/day group.

The results strongly suggested that bilberry inhibited proinflammatory proteins linearly in dose dependent-manner observed by the reduction of levels of IL-1b, IL-6, and VEGF.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, " It appears that berry intake has an ameliorating effect on some markers of gingival inflammation-reducing gingivitis to a similar extent compared to standard of care".

Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a functioning remedy for the treatment of gingival inflammation, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Artichoke, the Potential Anti Mesothelioma Remedy, According to Researchers

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that develops from the thin layer of tissue known as the mesothelium.

Most cases of mesothelioma are found on the lining of the lungs and chest wall, compared to other organs. Pleural mesothelioma is a cancer of the pleural lining of the lung.

Exposure to asbestos which has been banned is one of the most common causes of the disease. Some researchers suggested that inhaling asbestos can cause mesothelioma in many ways, including
* Induced chronic low-grade inflammation of mesothelial cells as the immune system can not completely drive out the fibers that cause damage to the lung, leading to the compromise.

* Long-term exposure of the asbestos can suppress the genes associated with limited cell cycle division and tumor suppression

* Long-term exposure is also found to alter the cell DNA, leading to cancer.

According to statistics, 2000 to 3,000 people are diagnosed with mesothelioma each year in the United States. The asbestos risk of pleural mesothelioma is in the range of 2 to 10 percent.

Most cases of malignant mesothelioma are closely associated with past occupational exposure.
However, asbestos is found persistently in our natural and built environments.

Besides most common cancer symptoms, patients with pleural mesothelioma at the advanced stage may also experience symptoms of dry cough or wheezing, shortness of breath (dyspnea), respiratory complications and pain in the chest or abdomen.

Some patients may also develop pleural effusion (fluid around the lungs), fever or night sweats, fatigue, and muscle weakness

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and for the treatment of digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

In the concern of the malignant pleural mesothelioma, a poorly treated neoplasia by conventional medicine, arising from the pleural mesothelial lining, researchers examined leaf extract of Cynara scolymus in vitro and in vivo.

The study included tMSTO-211H, MPP-89 and NCI-H28 mesothelioma cell lines and untransformed mesothelial cells HMC, treated with increasing concentrations (ranging from 3 to 200 μg/ml) of artichoke leaf extract for 72 hrs.

Injection of the leaf extract not only inhibited strongly the cell proliferation but also affected the migration and tumor engraftment in the mesothelioma cell lines.

More precisely, MSTO-211H cells treated with the artichoke extract showed a change in the cellular morphology both in a short-term assay, compared to more resistant more resistance in the HMC cells.

In MSTO-211H, MPP-89 and NCI-H28 cells, injection of artichoke leaf extract inhibited the formation of cancer cell colony.

Astonishingly, dietary feeding with Cynara scolymus leaf extract showed a similar inhibition against the growth of mesothelioma xenografted tumors comparable to those of pemetrexed.

Where pemetrexed is a chemo medicine used for the treatment of cancer, including mesothelioma.

Dr. Claudio Pulito and colleagues suggested, "leaf extract of Cynara scolymus holds therapeutic potential for the treatment of mesothelioma".

Taken altogether, artichoke leaf extract may be considered a functioning remedy for the prevention and treatment of mesothelioma, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Ashwagandha Protects the Neuron Against the Onset of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis in Vivo

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as motor neuron disease (MND) or Lou Gehrig's disease, is a type of dementia that causes the death of neurons controlling voluntary muscles.

Dementia is a condition of neurodegeneration syndrome among elders, affecting memory, thinking, orientation, comprehension, calculation, learning capacity, language, and judgment. Over 47 million of the worldwide population are affected by the disease, mostly in the West.

Free radicals have been found to induce Lou Gehrig's disease. Researchers found that glutamate in the synapses enhances the production of free radicals(77) only in motor nerve cells but spare other nerve cells. such as cells control senses and other body functions, causing disruption of astrocytes in regulated glutamate levels.

Maintaining a balanced ratio of antioxidant and free radicals is essential for our body to perform a daily physiological function properly.

Truly, if our body is overwhelmed by overexpression of free radicals, it will be weakened by oxidative stress, causing adversely altered lipids, proteins, and DNA that can trigger a number of human diseases(a), including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Free radicals are unstable molecules that contain at least an unpaired electron with function as oxidants or reductants by donating an electron to or accept an electron from other molecules to exhibit chain and domino's effects.

The most common oxygen-containing free radicals found epidemiologically in induced chronic diseases, including hydroxyl radical, superoxide anion radical, hydrogen peroxide, oxygen singlet, hypochlorite, nitric oxide radical, and peroxynitrite radicals.

Antioxidants have been found to reduces the risk of Lou Gehrig's disease by inhibiting the overexpression of free radicals, including
* Vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin)
High doses of vitamin B12 as an antioxidant have shown to improve or slow muscle wasting in the later stages of patients with ALS disease(78)(79).

* Vitamin E
Vitamin E protected against cell membranes from lipid peroxidation damage(80) in reducing the risk of breakdown of the cell membrane cause of ALS(81).

* Superoxide dismutase enzyme
Mutations in the superoxide dismutase enzyme can increase the risk ALS(82) in catalyzing the dismutation of superoxide into oxygen and hydrogen peroxide(83).

* Cerebral cortex
Oxidative stress and DNA alternation triggered neuron damage(84) were found in elevated levels in mice with ALS(85).

* Amino acids
Diet high in amino acids as antioxidants have shown some promising effect in treating ALS(86)(87).

In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the treatment of neurological diseases, researchers examined the protective effects of Withania somnifera extract in the SOD1G93A mouse model with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

According to the tested analysis, the administration of WS extracts by gavage to mice expressing G93A mutant form of antioxidants superoxide dismutase (SOD1) found in the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis mouse increased longevity, improved motor performance and increased number of motor neurons in the lumbar spinal cord.

In other words, WS extracts inhibited the expression of mutated SOD1 by increasing the cellular chaperons with conformational folding functions.

Furthermore, proteins associated with the induction of pro-inflammatory and pro-apoptosis are also reduced by the injection of WS, through the extracts' immunomodulatory activity.

Moreover, WS extract also induced autophagy at the early stages of the disease, by cleaning out the damaged cells.

Based on the findings, researchers said," WS extracts might constitute promising therapeutics for the treatment of ALS with the involvement of misfolded SOD1".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered supplements for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Bromelin Inhibits Symptoms in Patients with Functional Dyspepsia

Functional dyspepsia, also known as indigestion, is a symptom in the stomach associated with difficulty in digesting food.

The most common symptoms of indigestion are pain or discomfort in your upper abdomen (dyspepsia) or burning pain behind the breastbone (heartburn) soon after eating.

Some patients may also experience symptoms of feeling full or bloated with no signs of relief.

In serious cases, patients may also experience symptoms of vomiting blood, dark, tarry stools due to damage to the lining of the stomach, shortness of breath, and unexplained weight loss.

If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with the doctor immediately

There exact causes of indigestion are multiple. Epidemiologically, female gender, aging, long-term use of pain relievers, such as aspirin and ibuprofen, smoking and people with long-term psychological problems such as anxiety or depression are some most common factors found in patients with functional dyspepsia.

Conventionally, treatment of functional dyspepsia is totally depending on the condition, including antibiotics for H. pylori infection and medication to reduce pain.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

On finding potential and natural compounds for the treatment of functional dyspepsia, researchers examined a dietary integrator composed of sodium alginate, sodium bicarbonate, bromelin and essential oils on patients affected by functional dyspepsia.

The study included a study of a total of 100 patients with functional dyspepsia diagnosed primarily on the basis of typical symptoms and the exclusion of non-functional gastrointestinal diseases.

According to the symptom classification, All patients were assigned to either dysmotility-like dyspepsia (N.=60) or reflux-like dyspepsia (N.=40).

All patients were treated with TUBES Gastro (0.80 g oral tablets bid after main meals) for 4 weeks, on top of their current treatment with proton pump inhibitors or not.

According to the results from the experiment, TUBES Gastro showed a high statistically significant reduction of the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) scores at 14 and 28 days: -1.5 (-26.3%) and -3.4 (-59.6%), respectively compared to the baseline in patients with dysmotility-like dyspepsia.

In patients with reflux-like dyspepsia, TUBES Gastro demonstrated a statistically significant reduction of the NRS score at 14 and 28 days: -2.8 (-41.2%) and -4.8 (70.6%), respectively (P<0.0001).

Furthermore, there were no side effects found during the study duration.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "TUBES Gastro treatment was effective and well-tolerated in reducing the symptomatology of patients affected by functional dysmotility-like and reflux-like dyspepsia".

In order to reveal additional information of TUBES Gastro anti-functional dyspepsia, researchers at the Molinette Hospital conducted a study to examine the preparation efficacy of a total of 53 consecutive patients (22 males, 31 females; mean age, 54+/-2.5 years) with functional dyspepsia and negative for Helicobacter pylori infection.

Patients classified into four subgroups according to predominant symptom: ulcer-like dyspepsia, Motility-like dyspepsia, reflux-like dyspepsia, and nonspecific dyspepsia, were received TUBES gastro (0.80 g oral tablets bid) for a minimum of 3 months (range, 3-11).

According to the results of patients who completed the study, the preparation showed a strong effect on the improvement in Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). score.

Compared to the based line, the difference in scores between the initial and the final visit was -1.9+/-2.1 cm (range, -6 to +3), or 23.8+/-40.8% (range, -150% to 100%).

Dr. Pellicano R, the lead scientists wrote, "The study results indicate that in the short term TUBES gastro can significantly improve dyspeptic symptoms in dyspeptic patients negative for H. pylori infection".

Taken altogether, bromelain used alone or combined with other remedies may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of functional dyspepsia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Bilberry Normalizes the Angiogenesis In the Body

Angiogenesis refers to the formation of new blood vessels from the existing vasculature.

Angiogenesis, on one hand, plays a critical role in repairing tissue damages including arteriosclerosis, myocardial infarction. On another hand, the expression of angiogenesis has been found to cause diseases and induce the progression of retinopathies, benign tumors, and cancer.

In other words, abnormal blood vessel growth that cause either excessive or insufficient has been linked to underlying many deadly and debilitating conditions.

Under normal conditions, the development of angiogenesis totally depends on the functional demands of the body. For example, exercise stimulates angiogenesis in skeletal muscle and heart and a lack of exercise can lead to capillary regression.

Clearly, these results demonstrated the need for angiogenesis for the body to function better and the formation of new blood vessels occurs throughout human life.

However, in the cancer perspective, new blood vessel growth is important for cancer proliferation and metastatic spread. The survival of tumor cells totally depends on an adequate supply of oxygen and nutrients.

Dr. the lead scientist said, "Levels of expression of angiogenic factors reflect the aggressiveness of tumor cells. The discovery of angiogenic inhibitors should help to reduce both morbidity and mortality from carcinomas".

In other words, if we can stop the tumor in stimulating the production of new blood vessels to supply energy for them to grow, we may cure cancer.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

With an aim to find potential treatment for diseases associated with angiogenesis,with no side effects, researchers examined the antiangiogenic properties and antioxidant activities (a) of the main anthocyanidins (delphinidin, cyanidin, and malvidin) found as constituents in Vaccinium myrtillus (bilberry) anthocyanosides (VMA) and (b) of N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC).

Anthocyanidins exerted a significant inhibition of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) associated with the growth of new blood vessels in a concentration-dependent manner.

Anthocyanidin at 3 and/or 10 microM are the most effective compared to those of NAC at 1 microM (the only concentration tested).
Moreover, both anthocyanidin (0.3-10 microM) and NAC (1-1000 microM) concentration-dependently also exerted a significantly scavenged the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical.

The findings suggested that VMA processes an anti-angiogenic activity depending on the main constituent anthocyanidins (delphinidin, cyanidin, and malvidin), presumably via antioxidant effects.

Additionally, in vitro and in vivo, Vaccinium myrtillus (Bilberry) extracts (VME) showed an anti-angiogenic effect on 0.3-30 µg ml(-1)) compared to those of GM6001 (0.1-100 µM; a matrix metalloproteinase inhibitor).

In human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), VME inhibited VEGF-A-induced proliferation of HUVECs.

According to the vivo assay, intravitreal administration of VME inhibited the formation of neovascular tufts during oxygen-induced retinopathy in mice.

The results suggested that VME may be effective against retinal diseases involving angiogenesis.

Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of diseases involved angiogenesis, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.
