Society and environment impact stress conditions, in a prolonged period of time may induce a change of behavior, leading to disturbances in the normal physiological functioning due to increased free radicals generation in the initiated onset of hypertension, neurosis, immune suppression, and other physical and mental disorders.

In the study to evaluate the anti-stress and memory-enhancing properties of F. Vulgare extract in experimentally stress rats at doses of 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight administered orally with an orogastric tube researchers found that rats treated with all doses exert a significant effect in reduced stress implication linearly, observed by Urinary levels of vanillylmandelic acid (VMA) assay in 24 hours.

Further analysis of the rat group treated fennel with an additional injection of ascorbic acid also found that the secretion of urinary ascorbic acid levels increased from 65.74 to 78.59, 108.41, and 125.82 μg/kg also within the same period on doses of 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg body weight respectively in compared to the untreated control group.

These results indicated that fennel has a stronger impact on reduced chronic stress connotation compared to both ascorbic acid and control groups.

Moreover, the group treatment group also displayed a reduced expression of lipid peroxidation in both rat liver and brain homogenates catalyzed by the stress in induction of ROS production and reduced natural antioxidant defense compared to the rat group treated with ascorbic acid.

Dr. S Koppula,, the lead author, after taking into account other confounders said, "The (Fennel) extract also exhibited potent antioxidant effect by inhibition of lipid peroxidation in both rat liver and brain homogenates to a greater extent than the standard antioxidant, ascorbic acid".

Additionally, in the review literature of a number of such drugs mostly in the form of their extracts (holistic approach) or in some, as active principles isolated from them, have been evaluated for their antistress activity by a number of tests which include open-field behavior, researchers found that
* Fennel may have a strong effect in reduced stress in tested mice through observation of swimming endurance and hexobarbitone sleeping time in association to stress in induction of anxiety.

* Fennel inhibited the production of the level stress hormone corticosterone produced in the cortex of the adrenal gland.

* Fennel increased the production of antioxidants and enhanced the antioxidant defense of hosts such as Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) and sorbitol dehydrogenase (SDH), in inhibiting overexpression of ROS in initiated chain reactions caused by chronic stress.

* Fennel inhibited levels of MAO in association with alternation of mood and mental conditions.

Finally, the application of fennel also reduced the tension of the central nervous system in response to stress impact, thus reducing neurotransmitter levels in stimulated production of stress hormones in facilitated ROS production, depression, anxiety,.......

The above illustration was supported by the application of fennel oil in exerted significant anti-psychiatric disorders caused by chronic stress such as depression and anxiety in tested mice respectively treated with water, fluoxetine (0.3 mg/kg), and fennel oil (0.5 ml/day) conducted by the Aga Khan University

According to the study, repeated administration of fennel oil for 3 weeks exerted significant antidepressant- and anxiolytic-like effects, observed by struggling time in forced swim test (FST) and time spent in open arm in the elevated plus maze (EPM) comparable to fluoxetine treatment group.

Interestingly, the rats treated group also exhibited high levels of antioxidants in inhibited ROS in facilitated production of free radicals through lipid peroxidation.

Taken together, fennel with abundant phytochemicals may be considered a functional food in reduced stress implication in the initiation of related diseases.

Herbal Dandelion(Taraxacum Officinale) Exerts an Inhibitory Activity Against the Risk of Metabolic Syndrome

A metabolic syndrome is a group of conditions associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and types 2 diabetes, including high blood pressure, sugar, cholesterol, triglyceride levels, and excess body fat around the waist.

Cardiovascular diseases refer to heart diseases, affecting millions of people in the world. According to statistics, over 17.7 million people died from CVDs in 2015, Hyperlipidaemia and hypertension are the risk factors for the diseases.

Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate glucose.

In other words, diabetes occurs when cells in the pancreas die off or receptor sites are clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

According to statistics, metabolic syndrome is a growing prevalence in the Western world, In the US, 30% of Americans are living with metabolic syndrome,

In other words, 1 in 5 people in Canada has metabolic syndrome, affecting 19.1% of all Canadian adults.

The CDC statistic suggested, that among US adults aged 18 years or older, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome rose by more than 35% from 25.3% to 34.2% according to the data from 1988–1994 to 2007–2012.

The most common metabolic syndrome are age, family history of metabolic syndrome, physical activity, and women diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome.

Symptoms of signs of metabolic syndrome depend on the types of affected conditions and complications.

Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver, and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, scientists examined the effects of Boldocynara® (Cynara scolymus, Silybum marianum, Taraxacum officinale, and Peumus boldus) as a combination product and its individual extracts on key enzymes relevant to metabolic syndrome.

According to the tested differentiation, the combination exerted moderate to weak effects on the tested liver enzymes against metabolic syndrome.

In the individual herb analysis, * Peumus boldus extract exhibited pronounced inhibitory activities on α-glucosidase (80% inhibition at 100 µg/ml, IC50: 17.56 µg/ml) associated with a metabolic modifier that could reduce the risk of CVD in patients with the metabolic syndrome.

* Silybum marianum had moderate pancreatic lipase (PL) inhibitory activities (30% at 100 µg/ml) involved in lipid metabolism disorder.

* Cynara scolymus showed moderate ACE inhibitory activity (31% at 100 µg/ml) in reducing the risk of CVD.

In other words, all individual herbal medicine work synergistically to induce inhibitory activity against all parameters in inducing the risk of metabolic syndrome.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, " our results indicate some moderate potential of the dietary supplement Boldocynara® and its single ingredients for the prevention of metabolic disorders".

Taken altogether, Dandelion used in a combination with other herbs may be considered a formula for the prevention of metabolic syndrome, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Fennel Causes the Apoptosis of Cancer Cells, Scientists Show

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a whole food or herb with the potential to activate the protein that programs the death of cancer cells, some studies found.

Cell death is a natural process to warrant the normal development of cells and the cell cycle maturation and maintain the normal function body in the optimized state.

However, some microorganisms are found to process the activity in triggering cell death for their own survival.

Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is a function of the immune system that evolved as a rapid and irreversible process to efficiently eliminate dysfunctional cells, including cells that were damaged by the alternation of DNA or infection

Cancer apoptosis is an action that causes cancer cells to die off with or without affecting the nearby cells.

Some herbal medicine such as fennel was shown to induce the function of overexpression of levels of free radical in initiating cytotoxic effect that targets cancer cells while protecting the healthy cells through its antioxidant activity.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of genus Foeniculum, belonging to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, regulate the menstrual cycle, and relieve PMS,...

In the study to investigated several herbal plants ethanol extracts from fruits of their apoptotic activity from fruits of seven species of Apiaceae family, namely, Eryngium planum, Archangelica officinalis, Pastinaca sativa, Heracleum sibiricum, Carum carvi, Foeniculum vulgare (fennel), and Levisticum officinale against ML-1—human acute myeloblastic leukaemia, J-45.01—human acute T cell leukaemia, EOL—human eosinophilic leukaemia, HL-60—human Caucasian promyelocytic leukaemia, 1301—human T cell leukaemia lymphoblast, C-8166—human T cell leukaemia, U-266B1—human myeloma, WICL—human Caucasian normal B cell, and H-9—human T cell, researchers found that
* The ethanol extract from fruit F. Vulgare shows the highest mortality in Trypan blue test for J45 cell line with 4% of viable cells and a C8166 cell line with 100% of mortality.

* The extract also shows the highest viability in other cell lines, including the HL60 with 60%, EOLwith 48%, and ML1 with 42%. The normal cell line H9 and WICL showed 35% and 25% of viable cells, respectively.

Furthermore, the reaffirm the use of fennel in traditional cancer treatment, researchers at the King Abdulaziz University (KAU), launched a study to demonstrate the anti-proliferative and apoptotic effect of chloroform fraction of fennel (CFF) in MCF-7 cells.

Application of fennel showed to inhibit the growth against MCF-7 and MDA-MB-237 in time- and concentration-dependent manners.

Fennel induced apoptosis of around 49% at the doses of 0.5 mg/ml of CFF and PI-stained cells showed the G1 phase cell cycle arrest, according to the Annexin V/PI-assay.

More importantly, the application of fennel also was found to reduce the elevated levels of ROS, disrupted mitochondrial membrane and increased levels of caspase-9 & caspase-3, and DNA fragmentation in the promotion of MCF-7 cells death.experiment

Dr. Syed FQ, the lead author in the final assessment of the experiment said, "(The results) revealed the proliferation inhibition, cell cycle arrest and apoptosis induction effect of CFF, which may help in exploring the novel anti-cancer drug for therapeutic implications".

Moreover, in the study to examine whether anethole, a major bioactive compound found in fennel, anise, and camphor processes anti-metastatic and apoptotic effects on highly-metastatic HT-1080 human fibrosarcoma tumor cells, researchers found that
* Despite weak cytotoxicity against HT-1080 cells, anethole inhibits the adhesion to Matrigel and invasion of HT-1080 cells in a dose-dependent manner.

* Anethole is also able to down-regulate the expression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and -9 with anti-apoptotic function and up-regulate the gene expression of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMP)-1 with apoptotic function.

Finally, anethole significantly decreased mRNA expression of urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA), but not uPA receptor (uPAR) in the facilitated cancer cell death.

Taken all together, fennel alone or its extracts and bioactive compound anethole may be considered adjunct therapy combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of cancers

Herbal Turmeric Effects on Skin Health

Skin, the large external organ in the human body is the outer layer, with a total area of about 20 square feet which protects the internal organs, bones, and tissues against damage.

The skin processes 3 main layers

* Epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin providing a barrier against infection from environmental pathogens. The outer layers also regulate the amount of water released from the body through transepidermal water loss.

* Dermis is the second layer of skin, containing blood capillaries, nerve endings, sweat glands, hair follicles, and other structures.

* The bottom layer is the subcutaneous fat which has been found to process the protective effect against the dangers of visceral fat.

Skin health refers to the use of material or agents, including topical and oral herbal remedies with the function to protect the skin cell against the environmentally harmful substances, including sun UV light, and microbial infection.

Some researchers suggested that by providing enough nutrition to the skin cells we can maintain healthy skin. In other words, macronutrients including carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids and micronutrients such as vitamins and essential minerals all work together to maintain healthy skin.

More precisely, we can maintain healthy skin by eating a healthy diet accompanied by moderate exercise and avoid exposure of skin to harmful substances.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

With an aim to find a natural compound for the enhancement of skin health, researchers examined the active component of turmeric, curcumin used medically to treat a variety of dermatologic diseases in traditional medicine.

The search involved the relationship between products containing turmeric, curcumin, and skin health in the medical databases of PubMed and Embase databases found a total of 234 articles with only 18 studies met inclusion criteria.

According to the identified studies, ingestion, topical use, and combined ingestion and topical use showed a statistically significant improvement in skin disease severity in the turmeric/curcumin treatment groups compared with control groups, including conditions of acne, alopecia, atopic dermatitis, facial photoaging, oral lichen planus, pruritus, psoriasis, radiodermatitis, and vitiligo.

Dr. Vaughn AR, the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounder wrote on the final report, "Overall, there is early evidence that turmeric/curcumin products and supplements, both oral and topical, may provide therapeutic benefits for skin health".

In order to reveal more information about curcumin in skin protection, researchers investigated the antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties against skin diseases.

According to the tested assays, curcumin exerted protective effects against skin damage caused by chronic ultraviolet B radiation.

Curcumin application also has a strong effect on the protection against skin aging and disorders such as psoriasis, infection, acne, skin inflammation, and skin cancer.

Taken altogether, turmeric may be considered a supplement for skin health with no side effects, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Fennel Protects Cell DNA Integrity Against Breast Cancer, Online Medical Literature Revealed

Fennel may have a potential and therapeutic effect in reducing the risk and treatment of breast cancer, some scientists suggested.

Breast cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably in the breast tissue. At the later stage, cancerous cells may travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean, used in traditional and herbal medicine as warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,...

In the evaluation of the essential oil extracted from fennel activity in human breast cancer cell line (MDA-Mb), researchers found that application of fennel extract exerted a significant effect in inhibition of the expression of cancer cell line at a dose of lower than flower than 10 μg/mL with IC50.

According to the University of Malaya in the investigation of the DNA protecting activity and inhibition of nicotine-induced cancer cell migration of 9 spices, fennel exerted a potential effect in the protection of the DNA integrity and inhibition of nicotine-induced cancer cell migration against Murine fibroblasts (3T3-L1) and human breast cancer (MCF-7) cells pre-treated with spice extracts and then exposed to H₂O₂ and nicotine.

Additional analysis suggested that the result of inhibition was attributed to fennel antioxidants of phenols and flavonoids in ameliorated H2O2 in initiated chain activity in the induction of cytotoxicity in altered DNA of the experiment cell line.

Some researchers suggested that overproduction of hydrogen peroxide may serve as a prodrug in the presence of transition metal ions, in induced production of highly reactive hydroxyl radicals to initiated DNA damage in precipitated apoptosis.

In other words, the application of highly oxidative hydrogen peroxide in the breast cancer cell line may cause a significant cytotoxic effect in cancer cell death.

These results demonstrated the correlation of the increase of apoptosis with the rise in generation of reactive oxygen species in cancer cells.

Due to this potential activity, some researchers suggested that hydrogen peroxide overproduced in tumor cells can serve as a prodrug for the treatment of cancer.

On the other hand, the application of H2O2 in healthy cells may induce DNA damage in the initiation of cancer cell development.

Furthermore, fennel scored a statistically significant DNA protecting activity in comparison to other spices, such as ginger with 50 μg/ml in reduced 68% of DNA damage in 3T3-L1 cells.

However, Fennel exerted a lesser effect in inhibited cancer MCF-7 cells with nicotine-induced cell migration in comparison to other spices such as pepper, long pepper, and ginger.

The above differentiation was supported by the joint study led by the Avicenna Tajik State Medical University, in the evaluation of the antioxidant effect of essential oil of fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) against MCF-7 (human breast adenocarcinoma).
According to the result from Gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric analysis, fennel displayed a moderated antioxidant in precipitated cytotoxic activity against MCF-7 (human breast adenocarcinoma) with IC50 values between 30-210 mg L-1 in comparison to cytotoxic reference compounds.
In fact, the efficacy of fennel essential oil in inhibiting breast cancer proliferation and migration was attributed to the presence of lipophilic secondary metabolites and anise aldehyde, which have the potential in elevated the interference with molecular targets in cells by fennel antioxidant compounds such as anethole.

Taken together, fennel and its bioactive compound may be considered functional foods in reduced risk, progression, and treatment of breast cancer. However, intake of fennel supplement should be taken with extreme care in preventing liver acute toxicity.

Herbal Angelica, Processes Apoptotic and Anti Proliferative Function in Vitro

Cancer is a group of medical and chronic diseases characterized by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably in the tissue of specific organs in the body.

Over time, the alternative cells induced tumor may become progressively worse and damage other healthy tissues, depending on the grade of the tumor.

At the later stage, the most invasive tumor can induce secondary metastasis by spreading to other organs in the body via lymph or blood.

According to the National Cancer Institute, approximately 38.4% of men and women will be diagnosed with cancer at some points during their lifetimes, according to the data from 2013–2015.

In 2017, an estimated 15,270 children and adolescents ages 0 to 19 were diagnosed with cancer and 1,790 died of the disease.

In cancer, antiproliferation is a process in which the cancer cells are killed or limited to grow through many mechanisms, including the use of chemo drugs.

In the immune perspective, anti-proliferation can be carried out by activating the genes associated with cancer suppression, programming cell death,.... and cell cycle arrest.

A suppressive gene, such as pro-apoptotic p53 induces cancer cell death through cell cycle arrest. In other words, the gene inhibits tumor growth by interrupting the cancer cell cycle division.

In the programmed cell death gene, such as BCL-2 induce cell death by either inducing apoptosis. In other words, If cells are no longer needed or damaged, activating an intracellular death program will cause cell death.

In phytochemicals, anti-proliferation can also be carried out by antioxidants in which they stimulate the free radicals overexpression to induce toxicity to tumor cells without causing harm to the nearby healthy cells.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the prevention and treatment of cancer, researchers examined the effects of Angelica phytochemical (+)-4'-decanoyl-cis-khellactone and (+)-3'-decanoyl-cis-khellactone from A. purpuraefolia on cell proliferation and apoptotic cell death.

In 4 breast (MDA-MB-231, MCF-7, HS578T, and T47D), three cervical (HeLa, SiHa, and C33A) cancer cell lines, and NIH 3T3 normal cells used for the experiment, researchers found that
* (+)-4'-decanoyl-cis-khellactone and (+)-3'-decanoyl-cis-khellactone treatment suppresses the growth and proliferation of cancer cells at a relatively low concentration (<10 μg/ml).

* The phytochemical also induces cancer cell apoptosis at a high concentration (>50 μg/ml).

* At the concentration of 10 μg/ml, the chemical compounds also exerted a strong cell cycle arrest in the S/G2 phase.

Furthermore, according to the Western blot analysis, the concentration higher than 50 μg/ml of (+)-4'-decanoyl-cis-khellactone increased the large percentage of apoptotic cells in a time-dependent manner.

Interestingly, while the (+)-4'-decanoyl-cis-khellactone using both extrinsic and intrinsic pathways to induce apoptosis, the but (+)-3'-decanoyl-cis-khellactone uses only an intrinsic pathway for the same results.

In other words, the (+)-4'-decanoyl-cis-khellactone and (+)-3'-decanoyl-cis-khellactone also inhibited the in vitro proliferation of six other human breast and cervical cancer cell lines with different pathways.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, "Our data strongly suggest that (+)-4'-decanoyl-cis-khellactone and (+)-3'-decanoyl-cis-khellactone act as an anti-cancer supplement particularly against breast and cervical cancers by inducing cell cycle arrest in the S/G2 phase and caspase-dependent apoptosis at relatively low and high concentrations, respectively".

Taken altogether, Herbal Angelica processes anti-proliferative activity against cancer, pending larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Dandelion(Taraxacum officinale), a Natural Anticoagulant Activity

Platelet aggregation refers to the platelet-to-platelet adhesion in the blood that forms a clot.
Platelet aggregation plays a critical role in the protection of the body against blood loss due to injury or tissue damage.

In other words, platelet aggregation is a natural reaction of the wound healing process of blood clotting in damage and injure of our body, to prevent infection and inflammation.

However, activated platelets that stimulate blood clot formation have also been found to induce atherothrombotic disease.

Antiplatelet aggregation medicines, also known as platelet agglutination inhibitors are the types of medicine that process blood-thinning properties.
