Dried peas with high of fiber may have a potential effect in the prevention and treatment of colon cancer.
Colon cancer is a chronic and medical condition characterized by cells growth uncontrollably and disorderly that start on the surface of the inner lining of colon tissue.
At the advanced stage, the cancerous cell can travel a distance away from the original site to affect other healthy tissue and organ through the circulation of blood and fluids.
The exact causes of colon cancer are unknown. However, researchers do know that unhealthy diet and lifestyle with physical inactivity are associated with a substantially increased risk of colon cancer.
Epidemiological studies agreed that the Western diet is associated with the increased risk and recurrent risk of colon cancer.
Ms. Marilisa Racco at the National Online Journalist, Smart Living Global News wrote "There’s more bad news for lovers of red meat and refined grains — also known as a Western diet — from cancer researchers. A new study has found that a pro-inflammatory diet that’s heavy in processed red and organ meat, refined grains, and sugary drinks, will significantly increase the risk of developing colorectal cancer in both men and women".
Furthermore, a higher intake of a Western dietary pattern after cancer diagnosis was also associated with recurrence and death in colon cancer patients.
Publish on the Public Medical Literature, the study includes a total of 1009 patients with stage III colon cancer.
Researchers said, "During a median follow-up of 5.3 years for the overall cohort, 324 patients had a cancer recurrence, 223 patients died with cancer recurrence, and 28 died without documented cancer recurrence".
These result suggested that genetic preposition and an unhealthy diet and lifestyle the major risk factors that associate to the onset of colon cancer and recurrent colon cancer.
Dried peas are the small but nutritionally mighty member of the legume family, the genus Pisum belonging to the family Fabaceae.
The bean has a healthy source of protein, fibers, vitamins, and minerals that are good for everyone diet.
Besides it main component of the polyphenolic compound, dried bean also contains saponin pisatin, L-pipecolic acid, glycoside-Pisatoside, tocopherols, cerebroside, etc.
In the study to reaffirm the polyphenolics and saponins effect in the stimulation of antioxidant enzymes in the host and anticarcinogenic activity, researchers launched an investigation to examine the naturally occurring plant protease inhibitors which have potential health-promoting properties within the mammalian gastrointestinal tract against the risk of colon cancer.
Bowman-Birk inhibitors (BBI) isolated from peas exerts anti-carcinogenic and anti-inflammatory properties in the large intestine by surviving from both acidic conditions and the action of proteolytic enzymes in the stomach and small intestine,
A recombinant form of TI1B (rTI1B), representing a major BBI isoinhibitor from pea also inhibited the growth of human colorectal HT29 cells in vitro.
The proliferation of HT29 colon cancer cells was significantly affected by the injection of rTI1B in a dose-dependent manner (IC50 = 31 (sd 7) μm), compared to the novel engineered mutant.
Interestingly, application of rTI1B induced HT29 colon cancer cells apoptosis without affecting the nearby healthy cells.
Furthermore, the rTI1B proved to be active against trypsin and chymotrypsin in facilitating the colorectal carcinogenesis and promotes proliferation, invasion, and metastasis.
Proteases inhibitor isolated from the peas may process a potential chemopreventive effect during the early stages of colorectal carcinogenesis.
Adding 1 or 2 portions of dried peas into a daily diet in high colon cancer risk patients may reduce the incidence of colon cancer.
Taken all together, dried peas may be considered a function legume in the prevention and adjunct therapy for the treatment of colon cancer.
However, further data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the dried peas or its bioactive compounds during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of its anti-colon cancer possibilities.

Strawberries, The Functional Food Which Inhibits the Risk Factors of the Onset of Atherosclerosis
Strawberries may be considered a functional food that blocks the plaque accumulated in the arteries, causing atherosclerosis, some scientists suggested.
Atherosclerosis is a medical condition of heart disease characterized by plaque building up in the inner wall of the arteries.
Where arteries are blood vessels that carry oxygen and nutrient-rich blood to the heart and other organs and tissue of the body and plaque is the substance made up mostly with fat, cholesterol, calcium.
According to the statistics, atherosclerosis causes 32% of deaths of heart disease. The prevalent rate of the disease onset among adults of 20 years and above is 13.8%.
Dr. Singh RB, the lead author in the assessment of diet and exercise and lifestyle on risk of atherosclerosis conducted a randomized, single-blind, controlled trial, 621 patients assigned either intervention diet A (group A, 310 patients) or control diet B (group B, 311 patients) for a period of 24 weeks.
Where participants of group A are received: (1) a diet with a higher percentage of calories from fruits and vegetables and complex carbohydrates; (2) a higher polyunsaturated/saturated fat ratio diet; and (3) a larger amount of soluble dietary fiber, antioxidant vitamins and minerals and low saturated fat and cholesterol than group fB. Group A patients also did more physical and yogic exercises than group B.
After 24 weeks of intervention, he wrote. " There was a significant decrease in serum total cholesterol (13.3%), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (16.9%), triglycerides (19.2%), fasting blood glucose (19.5%) and blood pressures (11.5/6.2 mm Hg) in the intervention group compared with initial levels and changes in group B".
These result suggested that a healthy diet accompanied by moderate exercise are the major factors that can substantially reduce the risk of atherosclerosis. In other words, people who follow the Western diet with physical inactivity are at higher risk to the onset of the disease.
Strawberries are a genius of Fragaria × ananassa belonging to the family Roseaceae.
They have been grown all over the world in a suitable climate for commercial profits and health benefits.
The major chemical compounds of strawberry include anthocyanin and ellagitannins and p-Hydroxybenzoic acid, p-coumaric acid, ellagic acid, cyanidin-3-glucoside, pelargonidin-3-glucoside, kaempferol, quercetin, and myricetin.
Intake of strawberry daily to improve the potent antioxidants status in the body can reduce cardiovascular risk factors, such as elevated blood pressure, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, and inflammation in limited studies.
Dr. Basu A, the team leader at the Oklahoma State University, Stillwater study showed that freeze-dried strawberry supplementation improves blood pressure, impaired glucose, dyslipidemia, or circulating adhesion molecules in obese subjects with metabolic syndrome, thereby lowering cardiovascular risk factors in these subjects suggested.
The randomized controlled trial included 27 subjects with metabolic syndrome (2 males and 25 females; body mass index, 37.5 +/- 2.15 kg/m(2); age, 47.0 +/- 3.0 years [means +/- SE]) consumed 4 cups of freeze-dried strawberry beverage (50 g freeze-dried strawberries approximately 3 cups fresh strawberries) or equivalent amounts of fluids (controls, 4 cups of water) daily for 8 weeks.
Strawberry supplementation intake significantly decreased total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (5.8 +/- 0.2 to 5.2 +/- 0.2 mmol/L and 3.5 +/- 0.2 to 3.1 +/- 0.1 mmol/L, respectively [means +/- SE], P < .05) and low-density lipoprotein particles compared to controls at the week 8.
Furthermore, strawberry supplementation also decreased circulating levels of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 vs controls at the end of the study.
The team at the final report said, "short-term freeze-dried strawberry supplementation improved selected atherosclerotic risk factors, including dyslipidemia and circulating adhesion molecules in subjects with metabolic syndrome".
In additional examing the therapeutic roles of strawberries, blueberries, and cranberries in metabolic syndrome, a prediabetic state characterized by several cardiovascular risk factors, Dr. Basu A said, "strawberries lowering total and LDL-cholesterol, but not triglycerides, and decreasing surrogate biomarkers of atherosclerosis (malondialdehyde and adhesion molecules)".
Strawberry also extended a lowering systolic and diastolic blood pressure and lipid oxidation and improving insulin resistance but in the lesser effect compared to the blueberry
Cranberry juice selectively decreasing biomarkers of lipid oxidation (oxidized LDL) and inflammation (adhesion molecules) in metabolic syndrome compared to lesser effect in those of strawberry.
The tested berries demonstrated a potential effect in up-regulation of endothelial nitric oxide synthase activity in the protection of the cardiovascular system, reduction of renal oxidative damage, and inhibition of the activity of carbohydrate digestive enzymes or angiotensin-converting enzyme in controlling the blood pressure by regulating the volume of fluids in the blood.
Taken all together, strawberry may be considered a function\al food for the prevention of atherosclerosis and combined with the primary therapy for the treatment of the disease.

The Herbs That Protect Digestive Function Against Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), also known as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), gastric reflux disease, or acid reflux disease, is a chronic condition characterized by liquid stomach acid refluxing back up from the stomach into the esophagus, causing heartburn.
According to the study of "Updated guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease." by DeVault KR, Castell DO; American College of Gastroenterology, GERD is defined as symptoms or mucosal damage produced by the abnormal reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus.
Most common symptoms are burning sensation in your chest (heartburn), chest pain, regurgitation of food or sour liquid and sensation of a lump in your throat.
In the severe case, people with GERD may experience symptoms of difficulty swallowing, lump in the throat asthma,... and chronic cough.
According to the Assaf Harofeh Medical Center, GERD may also facilitate symptoms of chest pain, similar to those with noncardiac chest pain (NCCP)(5).
The causes of GERD are not fully understood. However, some researchers suggested that obesity, poor diet, lack of physical activity, consumption of tobacco and alcohol, and respiratory diseases are associated with the prevalent risk of the diseases(6).
Properly manage diet such as two meals a day with an intake of only fluids in between, whenever the patient feels hungry or thirsty, is a useful dietary regimen for the management of GERD(7) and avoid foods and beverages that trigger GERD symptoms(8).
Use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) may be effective but the long-term application may cause severe side effects.
Types of food to prevent and treat Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
1. Peppermint
According to the study of the review of the bioactivity and potential health benefits of peppermint tea (Mentha piperita L.)." by McKay DL, Blumberg JB. posted in PubMed, in vitro, peppermint has significant antimicrobial and antiviral activities, strong antioxidant and antitumor actions, and some antiallergenic potential.
Animal model studies demonstrate a relaxation effect on gastrointestinal (GI) tissue, analgesic and anesthetic effects in the central and peripheral nervous system.
However, human studies of peppermint leaf are limited and clinical trials of peppermint tea are absent.
Adverse reactions to peppermint tea have not been reported, although caution has been urged for peppermint oil therapy in patients with GI reflux, hiatal hernia or kidney stones(1).
2. Ginger
Gingerol, is also known as gingerol, a phytochemical of Flavonoids (polyphenols) found in fresh ginger and in a variety of other plants.
Ginger has been used for thousands of years to enhance the function of digestive system and treat stomach distress including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and indigestion, acid reflux, motion sickness, dyspepsia, etc. due to its due to its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and analgesic properties.
According to the study of " Ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) and the gingerols inhibit the growth of Cag A+ strains of Helicobacter pylori", the methanol extract of ginger rhizome inhibited the growth of all 19 strains in vitro with a minimum inhibitory concentration range of 6.25-50 micrograms/ml.
One fraction of the crude extract, containing the gingerols, was active and inhibited the growth of all HP strains with a MIC range of 0.78 to 12.5 micrograms/ml and with significant activity against the CagA+ strains(2).
Other research of [6]-gingerol, [8]-gingerol, [10]-gingerol, and [6]-shogaol. and it effects in nausea and vomiting found that the efficiency of ginger in reducing nausea and vomiting may be based on a weak inhibitory effect of gingerols and shogaols at cholinergic M (3) receptors and serotonergic 5-HT (3) receptors.
Serotonergic 5-HT (4) receptors, which play a role in gastroduodenal motility, appear not to be involved in the action of these compound. (3)
3. Aloe Vera Juice
According to the study described in article of "Effect Of Orally Consumed Aloe Vera Juice On Gastrointestinal Function in Normal Humans", by Jeffrey Bland, Ph.D. (Linus Pauling Institute of Science & Medicine) involved ten healthy subjects - five men (median age: 42; standard deviation: 14 years), and five women (median age: 32; standard deviation: 5 years), Aloe vera juice injection promoted proper gastrointestinal function through regulating gastrointestinal pH and improved gastrointestinal motility, increased stool specific gravity, and reduced populations of certain fecal micro-organisms, including yeast(4).
4. Mastic Gum
According to the article of "Strategies to Protect Against Potential Bone-Destroying Effects"By Chris D. Meletis, ND, while much of the research on mastic gum revolves around its ability to support the health of patients with ulcers and the ability to inhibit the bacteria H. pylori, has been equally useful in patients with GERD and acid reflux(4).

The Potent functional Food Which Protects the Brain Against Onset of Neuro-degenerative Disorders, Scientists Reveal
Carrots may have a profound and positive effect in reducing risk, progression, and treatment of the neurodegenerative disorder, some scientists suggested.
Neurodegeneration is the progressive loss of neurons including the death of neurons, characterized by structure loss induced reduction of brain function.
The exact causes of neurodegenerative disorders are unknown. Researchers also do not why people with the same health conditions, some are susceptible to certain neurodegenerative disorders such as
Huntington's disease. ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), or Lou Gehrig's disease, Parkinson's disease or other forms of dementia, while others do not.
However, some researchers suggested that genetic mutation inherited from parents, certain illness and traumatic injury to the brain are some of the major causes of the onset of the disease.
According to Dr. Chaudhuri K, in the study of unhealthy diet and lifestyle on risk of neurodegenerative disorders, the onset of some neurodegenerative disorder was attributed to the unwholesome diet that disturbed mental health in initiating etiopathogenesis of senile dementia.
Further differentiation showed that psychological syndromes such as disturbed sleep, anxiety, tension, depression, difficulty in concentration, and memory, and the tendency to indulge in defective dietary habits, Kapha vitiating diets, and lifestyle are some predominant risk factors associated to the development of the disease.
Carrot, a root vegetable with an orange color is a subspecies of Daucus carota, belonging to the family Apiaceae, native to Asian and Europe.
In the evaluate the neurodegenerative disorder such as Alzheimer and Parkinson's diseases affecting the central nervous system with debilitating effect to the patient, researchers at the University Technology of Mauritius launched a study to test the efficacy of flavonoids, found in many vegetables including carrot.
Flavonoids are phytochemicals containing numbers of the member, including curcumin, lycopene, ginsenoside, vitexin, and baicalin with a proven record of anti-cancer and antioxidant and immunomodulation properties in numbers of studies.
At the results of the analysis, researchers showed that application of flavonoid to the brain ischemia patient also exerts potential neuroprotective effects by increasing neuronal viability, tissue perfusion, and cerebral blood flow and reducing ischemic-related apoptosis.
Moreover, patients treated with flavonoid also demonstrated a significantly anti-amyloidogenic effect and reduced the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the brain that has a strong implication in patients with Pakistan's disease.
After taking into account of other co and confounders, researchers concluded that flavonoid found in numbers vegetables and fruits, including carrot, may be served as a potential therapeutic agent in brain disorders.
Further differentiation of the oxidative stress which causes neurodegenerative disorder, including oxidative damage to neuron in induction of mitochondrial dysfunction and apoptosis, scientists at the Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region conducted a experiment to test the effect of lycopene, a polyunsaturated hydrocarbon with the highest antioxidant capacity compared to the other carotenoids against the expression of the diseases.
In rat model randomly divided into 5 groups: the sham group, the spinal cord injury (SCI) group and 3 SCI groups pre-treated with lycopene (5, 10, or 20mg/kg) researchers found that
* Spinal cord injury (SCI) group without treatment group displays a significant increase of malondialdehyde (MDA) content and a decrease of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) levels, compared to other groups.
Malondialdehyde (MDA) the final form of polyunsaturated fatty acids peroxidation is considered as a natural marker for oxidative stress.
* Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) are natural antioxidants produced the host body tissue with an aim to maintain the balance of ratio of reactive oxygen species and antioxidant in the body.
The expression of lower levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) is a strong indication of overabundant free radicals, compared to levels of antioxidant in the body.
* Group treated with lycopene regardless to concentration exerted an overwhelming effect in blocking the change of mRNA of the mitochondrial membrane caused by spinal cord injury (SCI), including cytochrome b and mitochondrial transcription factor A (Tfam), with functions in the induction of mitochondrial dysfunction.
Cytochrome b, a protein in the mitochondria of eukaryotic cells functioned as a part of the electron transport chain which was oxidated in this case.
Mitochondrial transcription factor A (mtTFA or Tfam), a protein with functions as a key regulator of mammalian mitochondrial (mt) DNA transcription and replication which was altered caused by the presence of MDA.
Further analysis also found that application of lycopene also reduces the risk of neurons cell apoptosis through decreased levels of pro-inflammatory and increased levels of anti-inflammatory expression in the tested rats.
These results suggested that lycopene found in vegetable including carrot significantly ameliorated oxidative damage, mitochondrial dysfunction, and cell apoptosis via some parameters indicated above.
Dr. Hu W, the lead authors said in the classification of doses application said, " lycopene significantly ameliorated the hind limb motor disturbances in the SCI+lyco10 group and the SCI+lyco20 group compared with the SCI group".
Taken together, carrot with a high amount of bioactive flavonoids, particularly lycopene may be considered a functional food in reducing risk and treatment of various forms of the neurodegenerative disorder, including Alzheimer and Parkinson diseases.

Green Tea, The Beverage In the Alleviated Symptoms, Reduces Risk and Treatment of Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR)
Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reducing the symptoms, risk, progression, and treatment of polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR), some scientists suggested.
Polymyalgia rheumatica an inflammatory disease with muscle pain and stiffness, especially in the shoulders, affecting mostly older adults beyond the age of 65.
The exact causes of polymyalgia rheumatica are unknown. However, researchers do know that certain prevalent risk factors are associated with the onset of diseases, such as age, family history, gender, ethnicity and exposure to environmental weather.
Genetic mutations inherited from the parents are also the major risk factor for the development of polymyalgia arthritis such as ICAM-1 (intercellular adhesion molecule 1), RANTES (regulated upon activation, normal T cell expressed, and presumably secreted).
It is important to know that Giant cell arteritis (GCA) (temporal arteritis) and polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) share the common identity, frequently related conditions in people generally over 50 years of age, according to the Dr. Miguel A Gonzalez-Gay in the study of " Genetic epidemiology: Giant cell arteritis and polymyalgia rheumatica".
Symptoms of PMR are depending on the severity of the condition, including aches or pain shoulders, neck, upper arms, buttocks, hips or thighs, and stiffness in affected areas.
People with PMR also experience pain in the morning or after being inactive for a time, limited range of motion in the affected areas.
If you have some of the above symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the PMR possibility.
Green tea is a precious drink processed numbers of health benefit and known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.
In an animal study of inflammatory diseases induced by injection of LPS, researchers found that application of green tea bioactive polyphenols EGCG improves antioxidant status of the host and decreases the production of inflammatory factors, including PMR through its antioxidant properties.
Further analysis suggested that application of EGCG reduced symptoms of inflammation such as pain, tension, stiffness, swelling of the infectious site without affecting the function of immune system in the protection against microorganisms invasion through inhibiting over-expression of tumor necrosis alpha(TNF-α) involved in the systematic inflammatory response to the acute phase of infection.
The bioactive compound also inhibited reactive oxygen species (ROS) in stimulating the production of inflammatory cytokines through stopping the free radicals chain reactions that facilitate inflammation and the precipitate skeletal muscle dysfunction and degradation by infiltrating immune cells to induce direct injury to muscle tissue.
In fact, overproduction of ROS increased expression of mitochondria, NAD(P)H oxidases, xanthine oxidoreductases, and nitric oxide synthases can cause an imbalance of the free radicals and antioxidant ratio, in orchestrated oxidative stress to muscle cells.
The further evaluation suggested that green tea EGCG also reduced expression of interleukin 6 (IL-6), with function in response to infections and tissue injuries.
Long-term overproduction of IL 6 due to the duo factors as a pro and anti-inflammatory protein may increase high-level concentrations of serum amyloid A (SAA), which has been found to induce serious complications of several chronic inflammatory diseases through the generated and deposited amyloid A amyloidosis into the extracellular space in an abnormal, insoluble, fibrillar form,
Moreover, EGCG also attenuated levels of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) in the regulation of innate and adaptive immune functions and served as a pivotal mediator of inflammatory responses through activation of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) in promoting muscle wasting, leading to muscle atrophy in the induction of pain and stiffness and swelling.
Importantly, application of green tea EGCG enhanced the natural antioxidant enzymes in the host such as glutathione, an antioxidant enzyme produced naturally found in every cell and tissue of the body.
These actions together with antioxidant initiated by injection of green tea EGCG stimulated cell regeneration, preserved the muscle cells and tissues and prevented muscle tension to precipitate polymyalgia arthritis.
Deficiency of glutathione levels was found to associate to the early onset of polymyalgia rheumatica, inducing symptoms of pain, stiffness, achiness, fatigue, and fever.
Differentiation of the above was supported by conventional medicine corticosteroids, a powerful anti-inflammatory drugs with the function to target pro-inflammation cytokines in the relieved stiffness and pain in patients with polymyalgia arthritis.
Taken all together, green tea and its bioactive polyphenols EGCG may be considered a functional food for alleviating symptoms, risk, progression and treatment of polymyalgia rheumatica(PMR).
However, ingestion green tea supplements should be taken with extreme care as acute liver toxicity has been reported in several medical literatures.

Maternal Coffee Intake > 4 Cups/Day May Increase Risk of Miscarriage, Scientists Suggest
The risk of miscarrying is increased substantially in excessive (over 4 cups/day) coffee drinkers during pregnancy, an Asian study suggested.
A miscarriage, according to the definition is the loss of a fetus before the 20th week of pregnancy.
Believe or not, according to medical literature, as many as many as 50% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage and over 80% of miscarriages are occurring within the first three months of pregnancy.
Some researchers suggested that women who carry mutation genes associated with chromosome gains and losses during embryonic development can lead to miscarriage or the failure of IVF treatments.
Other risk factors associated with an increased risk of miscarriage include aging Age. Women who are older than age 35, previous miscarriages. smoking and excessive alcohol drinking before and during pregnancy have a higher risk of miscarriage compared to younger women,
Chronic medical health conditions such as obesity and uterine or cervical problems can also substantially increase the miscarriage risk.
Coffee, one of the most popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roasted bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.
In a case-controlled study conducted in Milan of 561 (72%) cases of spontaneous abortion and 877 (57%) controls, coffee drinking during the first trimester of the index pregnancy with healthy women who gave birth at term (> 37 weeks gestation) to healthy infants as control, researchers reported that the risk of miscarry is classified as follows
* Coffee intake of 1, 2 or 3, and 4 or more cups of coffee per day are associated with an increased risk of 1.2, 1.8 and 4.0, respectively, compared to nondrinkers.
* The risk of pregnancy loss also is associated with the duration in years of coffee drinking. The estimated multivariate odds ratios of spontaneous abortion were 1.1 in comparison to non-coffee intake group.
Furthermore, in the evaluated effect of caffeine in influence of miscarriage researchers at the Boston University School of Public Health, conducted a prospective cohort study included 5132 Danish women planning pregnancy, enrolled from 2007 to 2010, after carefully assessed the returned beverage consumption on questionnaires, researcher found that a significantly miscarried risk is 1.62 higher in women consuming more than 300 mg/day of caffeine per day, in compared to 1.09 in women who consume <100 mg/day. Specifically, women with daily intake of caffeine of
* <100 mg/day showed a materially associated with SAB risk of 1.09.
* 100-199mg/day showed a materially associated with SAB risk of 0,89.
* 200-299mg/day showed a materially associated with SAB risk of 1.33
Additionally, in prospective cohort study included 15,590 pregnancies from 11,072 women with no history of SAB in the Nurses' Health Study II (1991-2009) with beverage intake assessed every 4 years using a validated questionnaire in case pregnancies lost spontaneously at <20 weeks gestation, total coffee intake had a positive, linear association with SAB.
In compared to non-pre-pregnancy coffee intake, the risk of SAB increased by 20% for women consuming ≥4 servings/day.
More importantly, Dr. Gaskins AJ, the lead author said, "Pre-pregnancy coffee consumption at levels ≥4 servings/day is associated with the increased risk of SAB, particularly at weeks 8-19".
Taking together, there is no doubt that coffee may contribute to a relative risk of miscarrying for women consuming more than 4 cups per day.
Women who are pregnant between 12 to 28 weeks of gestation with excessive coffee intake habit are recommended to consult with their doctors.

Carrots, the Veggies with Anti Cancer Potential, Researchers Find
Carrot, the root veggie may have a potential and positive effect in blocking the proliferation of cancer cells, some scientists suggested.
Cancer is a class of chronic and medical diseases characterized by irregular and disordered cell growth in one or some tissue and organs in the body.
Most cancers start from the inner lining of the tissue of the organs then slowly spread to the deeper parts of the infected organs. At the advanced stage, most malignant cancer cells can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissue and organs.
Most cancer diagnosed in the early have a 100% 5 years survival rate.
According to the statistic provided by the Canadian public health service, during their lifetime, nearly 1 in 2 Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer, and 1 in 4 will die from the disease.
Lung, colorectal, breast and prostate cancers account for half of all cancers diagnosed in Canada and over 25% of all cancer deaths in Canada are due to lung cancer.
The causes of cancers are unknown, however, scientists in the world agreed that there are several risk factors such as gene mutations inherited from the parents and acquired gene mutations caused by smoking, radiation, viruses, chemicals carcinogens, obesity, hormones, chronic inflammation, and physical inactivity are associated to the early onset of cancer.
Carrot, a root vegetable with an orange color is a subspecies of Daucus carota, belonging to the family Apiaceae, native to Asian and Europe.
In the investigation of the claim of Lebanese folk medicine that Daucus carota, also known as wild carrot has a potency for treatment of various types of cancer, researchers at the Lebanese American University, conducted an experience to identify the major compound responsible for the anti-cancer activity of DCOE.
β-2-himachalen-6-ol, a novel sesquiterpene unique to β-2-Himachalen-6-ol isolated from the Lebanese wild carrot demonstrated potent anti-cancer activity against B16F-10, Caco-2, MB-MDA-231, A549, and SF-268 cancer cells (IC50 13-4µg/ml; 58-18µM), and SF-268 cells.
Furthermore, the sesquiterpene was shown to induce cell death through apoptosis (flow cytometry), decrease 2D cell motility (wound healing assay) and 3D invasion, as well as increase cell adhesion in SF-268 cells.
Additionally, β-2-himachalen-6-ol showed very low toxicity.
These results suggested that wild carrot β-2-himachalen-6-ol may have a potential multi-mechanistic chemotherapeutic drug with high potency and safety.
Moreover, in the concerns of the mortality rate caused by gastric cancer, researchers at the Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences conducted a review by searching the multiple databases including PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Persian databases like Scientific Information Database (SID) and IranMedx to determine the relationship between carrot consumption and gastric cancer.
Out of 81 articles found in the databases, only 5 studies satisfied the medical guidelines and criteria were included in the review. after taking into account co and confounders, researchers found that
* Intake of carrot regularly reduced the risk of gastric cancer by 26%.
* There is an inverse relationship between the consumption of carrots and the risk of gastric cancer.
More interestingly, regarding the inconsistent results. associated with carrot intake and prostate cancer risk, researchers at the Zhejiang University also launched a review by searching the databases of PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science, the Cochrane register, and the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure to determine whether intake of carrot may reduce the risk of prostate cancer.
At the final report, researchers found that
* Intake of carrot is associated with a significantly decreased risk of prostate cancer with the odds ratio of 0.82 which is consistency with the Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences study.
* Forr each serving per week or 10 g per day increment of carrot intake, the odds ratio of the risk of prostate cancer was 0.95, according to the dose-response meta-analysis.
The findings indicated that intake of carrot may have a potential effect in reducing the risk of the onset of cancers.
However, due to the limited number of cohort studies and substantial heterogeneity observed between studies in this meta-analysis, further well-designed prospective studies are warranted to confirm the findings from the studies.

Green Tea Protects the Child Joints Against the Onset of Juvenile Arthritis
Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reducing risk, progression, and treatment of juvenile arthritis, some scientists suggested.
Juvenile arthritis is an inflammatory disease affecting the synovium in children aged 16 or younger.
In other words, it is an autoimmune disorder caused by the immune system attacks some of the body's own healthy cells and tissues, in this case, the immune system attacks the joint tissue in the juvenile.
Genes that are associated with the risk of juvenile idiopathic arthritis include HLA-A. HLA-B. HLA-DPB1. HLA-DQA1. HLA-DQB1. HLA-DRB1. IL2RA. IL6, according to the National Institute of Health.
According to the statistic, the most common form of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), affects over 50,000 children in the United States alone.
Juvenile Arthritis shares the common symptoms of adult arthritis, including pain, stiffness, swelling, fever, skin rash and in the serious case. The condition can also cause some complications such as pericarditis, hemolytic anemia, macrophage activation syndrome (MAS), and endarteritis
In the article "Juvenile Arthritis: Early Signs and Symptoms" By Susan Bernstein wrote, "Juvenile arthritis includes many different diseases, but one common thread between them is that they can have serious, even life-threatening impacts on a young child".
Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and Western world.
In the investigation of the effect of green tea extract on the oxidative state of the liver and brain of adjuvant-induced arthritic rats, a model for human rheumatoid arthritis with daily doses of 250 mg kg(-1) (59.8 mg catechins per kg) for 23 days, researchers at the State University of Maringá, found that treatment group expressed a significant activity in reducing the protein and lipid damage in liver, brain, and plasma, caused by ROS expression in induction of oxidation which has been found with associated to the progression of arthritis.
Injection of green tea extract also enhanced the overexpression of antioxidant defenses, found in low levels in patients with arthritis through restoration of the glutathione (GSH) associated to the important function in preventing damage to important cellular components caused by reactive oxygen species and protein thiol levels in reducing cellular oxidation through chelative and detoxified activities and improved natural antioxidant enzymes, produced by the body.
Furthermore, green tea extract also inhibited the levels of glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase, which is increased in the liver in patients with arthritis, one of the major risk factor for the development of arthritis.
These results suggested that application of green tea exerted a significantly profound effect in the liver and brain of patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis through reduced overexpression of oxidative stress in precipitated injury to lipids and proteins.
Some researchers suggested that by modifying the metabolic function in lipid and protein, green tea extract exhibited a strong protective effect in reducing the symptoms and progression of arthritis.
According to the study of University of Health System of green tea effect in patients with rheumatoid
arthritis, injection of green tea extract demonstrated a therapeutic effect in patient's synovial fibroblast of the lining tissue which surround the capsule of the joint by inhibiting the production of IL-1B, a prototypic proinflammatory cytokines in response to acute and chronic inflammation. Overexpression of IL-1B is associated with the contribution of joint damage.
Interestingly, in the study of adolescent male Wistar rats 12-week exposure to Cd and Pb (7mg Cd and 50mg Pb in 1kg of the diet randomly assigned to 12 to each group, as positive control received without Cd, Pb and teas, a negative control group received Cd and Pb, and groups supplemented additionally with green (GT), black (BT), red (RT), and white tea (WT), researchers indicated that application of tea significant inhibits the decreased levels of the geometric(shape) and densitometric(density) parameters and total thickness of articular cartilage caused by Cd and Pb in compared to the negative control group.
Tea injection group also displayed a huge improvement in mechanical endurance, growth plate thickness, and trabecular histomorphometry depending on the tea type.
Due to the limitation of the study, Dr. Tomaszewska E, the lead researcher said, " It is difficult to indicate which tea has the best protective effects on bone and hyaline cartilage against heavy metal action".
More importantly, in the examine some major factors in contributing juvenile arthritis, green tea rich in catechins (Healthy green tea) in animal study, green tea injection restored these biomarkers of cytokine genes (IL-1A, IL-2, IFN-alpha, FGF-alpha, TNF-alpha) to near normal levels, thus preventing or attenuating the development of a certain type of inflammatory arthritis.
Taken all together, green tea and its bioactive polyphenols may be considered a functional food for reduction of the early onset, progression and combined with standard therapy for treatment of juvenile and adult arthritis.
However, the intake of green tea supplement should be taken with exceptional care as acute liver toxicity has been reported in numbers of medical literature.

Carrot Promotes Weight Loss and Prevents the Onset of Obesity
Carrots may have a profound and positive effect in reducing weight loss in the obese population, some scientists suggested.
Weight loss is an intentional action referred by the medicine, health, or physical fitness communities as a reduction of the total body mass, including loss of fluid, body fat or adipose tissue or lean mass.
Obesity is a condition or disease characterized by extreme overweight. According to the Body Mass Index calculator, BMI between 25.0 to <30 is considered overweight and BMI of 30.0 or higher, is considered obese.
According to the National Institue of Health, obese people are associated with numbers of diseases and conditions, including diseases of coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, certain types of cancer, stroke, gallbladder disease, liver disease, certain types of respiratory disease and infertility and conditions of high blood pressure, high total cholesterol or high levels of triglycerides, sleep apnea and osteoarthritis.
Most researchers agreed that obesity is caused by a genetic mutation inherited from the parents, a longterm unhealthy diet with consumption of high amounts of energy foods, particularly fat and sugars and physical inactivity.
Other causable factors also include certain medical conditions such as hypothyroidism and Cushing's syndrome and long-term use of certain medication such as corticosteroids and antidepressant.
The general belief also suggested that some smokers may gain weight if they quit smoking.
According to the study conducted by the J University of Georgia, using a combined approach to promote nutrition and physical activity policies and practices in the early care and education may reduce the risk of child obesity.
Carrot, a root vegetable with an orange color is a subspecies of Daucus carota, belonging to the family Apiaceae, native to Asian and Europe.
Estrogen-deficient animals with diet-induced obesity were examined in the study by the Obesity/Diabetes Center, Asan, Korea using black carrots to test the mechanisms of the long-term consumption of unfermented black carrot extract (BC) and its extracts fermented with Lactobacillus plantarum (BCLP) or Aspergillus oryzae (BCAO) in the prevention of menopausal symptoms including impaired energy, glucose and lipid metabolism
During the experiment, ovariectomized (OVX) rats were fed four different high-fat diets containing 2 % dextrin (OVX-control), 2 % BC, 2 % BCLP, or 2 % BCAO for 12 weeks. Sham rats were fed high-fat diets containing 2 % dextrin.
Fat mass and weight gain in tested mice were lower in descending order of OVX-control > BC and BCLP > BCAO due to increased energy expenditure and fat oxidation.
BC, BCLP and especially BCAO all normalized HOMA-IR, an indicator of insulin resistance and glucose intolerance.
Furthermore, BCAO markedly decreased hepatic triglyceride levels by increasing gene expressions of CPT-1 and PPAR-α, which are involved in fatty acid oxidation, and decreasing mRNA expressions of FAS and SREBP-1c, which are associated with fatty acid synthesis.
More importantly, Cyanidin and malvidin markedly decreased fat accumulation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes by increasing CPT-1 and decreasing FAS expression in the liver fat metabolism and SREBP-1c expression in the regulation of the genes with the function of lipid metabolism in comparison with cyanidin-3-rutinoside, an anthocyanin, and malvidin-3,5-diglycosides, another anthocyanidin.
Where 3T3-L1 is a cell line derived from 3T3 cells used in biological research on adipose tissue.
These results suggested that unfermented black carrot extract (BC) and its extracts fermented with Lactobacillus plantarum (BCLP) processed anti-obesity mechanism by preventing the exacerbation of lipid and glucose metabolism, the major's causes of weight gain.
However, further data collection on large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of carrot's anti-weight gain possibilities.

Fennel, the Best Functional Food to Normalizes Your Blood Cholesterol Quickly With No Side Effects
Scientists may have found a natural whole food with the potential to treat hyperlipidemia without inducing any side effects, some studies suggested.
Cholesterol, the natural ingredient produced in the liver plays an important role in stimulating the production of vitamin D, steroid hormones, and bile acids and maintaining healthy cell membranes.
Hyperlipidemia is a condition characterized by abnormally elevated levels of cholesterol in the plasma of the blood.
The causes of hyperlipidemia are unknown. However, an unhealthy diet with a lot of unsaturated fat and trans fat is associated with the early onset of the disease. Foods such as cheese egg yolks fried and processed foods and red meat have found to increase blood cholesterol, long-term intake of such foods in great amount have been found to increase the risk of hyperlipidemia, epidemiological studies found.
The Beni-Suef University, in the study to determine the development of obesity in response to a high-fat diet (HFD) an Egyptian Herbal mixture formulation (HMF), including fennel, showed, "feeding HFD diet significantly increased final body weight, triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol, & LDL concentration compared with controls, while significantly decreasing HD".
Hyperlipidemia is a lifelong condition which is treatable.
Dr. Robert B. Kelly at the Fairview Hospital/Cleveland Clinic Family Medicine Residency Program in the article "The most beneficial changes result from reducing intake of saturated and trans fats; increasing intake of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats; fortifying foods with plant stanols or sterols; isocalorically adding tree nuts to the diet; consuming one or two alcoholic drinks per day; and adopting a Portfolio, Mediterranean, low-carbohydrate, or low-fat diet. Smaller but still beneficial effects result from reducing intake of dietary cholesterol, increasing intake of soluble fiber and soy protein, and eating fatty marine fish or taking marine-derived omega-3 fatty acid supplements".
Therefore by changing the diet pattern and engaging regular physical exercise are the fundamental
options that not only can prevent the onset of the condition, particularly in people who are at the higher risk of hyperlipidemia and also treat high blood cholesterol in patients who already have the condition.
Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of a genus, belonging to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.
The plant has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS.
In the study to examine the effect of the aqueous extract of fennel in the reduced risk of hyperlipidemia, researchers conducted an experiment in Triton WR-1339 induced hyperlipidemia in mice.
Mice treated with the extract at different doses displays a significant reduction of cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol, and apolipoprotein-B decreased by 40%, 23%, 61%, and 61%, respectively.
Further analysis, the application also increased the levels of HDL-cholesterol and apolipoprotein A1 by 85% and 58%, respectively
According to the Mashhad University of Medical Sciences which also conducted a study to assess the effects of Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) on lipid profiles, in sixty eligible postmenopausal women, randomly assigned into the fennel and placebo groups.
Measurement of total blood cholesterol, cholesterol fractions, and triglycerides was tested at the baseline, and after a three-month follow-up.
At the end of 3 months, blood profiled withdrawn from the women suggested
* There are no significant difference in triglyceride (P = 0.679), total cholesterol (P = 0.103), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C; P = 0.146) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C; P = 0.266) levels between the two groups.
* Fennel treated group demonstrates a significant borderline improvement for HDL-C and triglyceride, compared to the placebo group.
Additional differentiation of the process of the double-blind, randomized and placebo-controlled trial, researchers suggested that longer durations, higher doses, and larger sample sizes are recommended to validate the results.
These results indicated that intake of foods for treatment of conditions or diseases must be on a long-term basis. The times of 3 months may be too short for foods to exert their potential effects.
Taken all together, fennel may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia. Intake of fennel should be increased gradually for the food to reach its antihyperlipidemic stage, a longer duration may be needed. In other words, please be patient.

Green Tea Inhibits The Excessive Uric Acid That Cause Acute and Chronic Gout
Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in blocking the onset and treatment of gout and recurrent gout, some scientists suggested.
Gout is a condition of recurrently inflammatory arthritis characterized by a red, tender, hot, and swollen joint caused by overexpression of purine in the body.
Gout is caused by an excess of uric acid in the blood, or hyperuricemia. Uric acid is a by-product that is produced during the digestive process in the breaking down of chemical ingredients purines.
Purines are natural nitrogen-containing compounds found in the cell DNA and RNA, including adenine (6-aminopurine) and guanine (2-amino, 6-oxypurine), is made inside the cells of the body.
Under normal condition, uric acid is eliminated by the kidney through urination. However, a high uric acid level can occur when the kidneys don't eliminate uric acid efficiently. People with kidney deficiency are associated with high levels of uric acid if foods with high levels of purines are consumed in a large amount, including red meat, seafood, and mushroom.
Some researchers suggested that people who are obese, overweight with diabetes, long-term use of diuretics and excessive alcohol drinking are associated with the risk of high levels of uric acid in the blood.
Additionally, genetic mutation inherited from the parents such as Q141K polymorphism and CFTR ΔF508 certain medical conditions such as tumor lysis syndrome, hypothyroidism, and psoriasis are also some major risk factors to cause excessive levels of uric acid in the blood.
If you are currently taking long-term medications as maintenance therapy, to keep uric acid levels steady. Please make sure that you are aware of their side effects.
Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and Western world.
According to the joint study led by the University of Nagasaki, green tea and its bioactive compounds Epigallo catechin-O-gallate (EGCG) may be considered as a putative curative drug for various diseases of gout, through its properties in reducing the vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2) in response to vascular endothelial growth factor signal (VGFG) for the formation of gout through expression of levels of uric acid.
The study also emphasized that green tea with high levels of antioxidant and function in the stimulated production of natural antioxidant in the body may also be used to reduce symptoms of recurrently inflammatory arthritis and inflammatory arthritis such as gout, through inhibiting the oxidative stress in the induced production of inflammatory cytokines to facilitate symptoms of inflammation.
The above differentiation was supported by the study of the effect of EGCG on monosodium urate monohydrate (MSU)-induced inflammation and cryopyrin (NLRP3 inflammasome) activation in C57BL/6 mice received a subcutaneous injection or oral gavage of EGCG before the intraperitoneal injection of MSU.
Truly, the application green tea EGCG decreased expression of gouty arthritis caused by injection of MSU-induced neutrophil infiltration with a function to initiate inflammation in the acute phase of infection and IL-1β secretion, in response and resistance to pathogens, but can also exacerbate damage during chronic disease and acute tissue injury.
The injection of green EGCG also decreased MSU-triggered neutrophil cytosolic factor 1, in the activated inflammatory response to optimize healing and reduce injury to the body but the proteins have been found to cause severe damage to the infectious site and NLRP3 protein expression in initiated systematic inflammatory expression.
Moreover, the effect of green tea in protection against gout occurrence also limited pro-inflammatory mediator secretion interleukin 1 beta (IL1β), a mediator of inflammation, in response to acute phase infection, interleukin 6 (IL-6) produced by large amount at sites of acute and chronic inflammation, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 in regulated monocytes, memory T cells, and dendritic cells to the sites of inflammation, and serum amyloid A, the serum was found to increase substantially in patients of chronic inflammatory disease, without limiting the function of the mediators in protect the infectious site against pathogens invasion.
More profoundly, the efficacy of green tea in reduced recurrent gout also extended to suppress NLRP3 inflammasome in stimulated caspase-1 in promoted secretion of others proinflammatory cytokines activation.
Dr. Jhang JJ, the lead author said, "EGCG treatment ameliorates MSU-induced inflammation, suggesting that EGCGexerts anti-inflammatory effect against MSU-induced acute gout attack."
Additionally, the University of Pretoria suggested that polyphenols extracted from green tea also exhibited an antioxidant effect in reducing the pronounce of oxidative stress by their antioxidant properties.
Catechin (C) (Ki = 303.95, uncompetitive), epicatechin (EC) (Ki = 20.48, mixed), epigallocatechin (EGC) (Ki = 10.66, mixed), epicatechin gallate (ECg) (Ki = 2.86, mixed) and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg) (Ki = 0.76, competitive) were found to have similar efficacy as allopurinol (Ki = 0.30, mixed), the drug used to inhibit the levels of xanthine oxidase (XO) in gout patients, through reducing reactive oxygen species in the initiation of oxidative stress that facilitates the inflammatory symptoms.
Taken all together, green tea and its bioactive polyphenols may be considered as a functional food for reduced onset and combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of gout with no adverse effects.

Green tea, The Beverage Which Ameliorates Symptoms and Treats Depression and Anxiety Disorders
Green tea may have a potential and positive effect in reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety stress, some scientists suggested.
Depression and anxiety disorders are a psychological illness. Depression disorder is not the same as anxiety disorder however they often share symptoms similar to those of anxiety.
The causes of depression may be attributed to the numbers of factors such as genetics, changes in hormone levels, certain medical conditions, stress, grief or difficult life circumstances.
In anxiety, risk factors that associated to the early onset of the disease are family history, long-term under stressful situations and excessive alcohol drinking and use of tobacco, particularly in people who had a childhood history of being abused.
The Mayo Clinic in the classification of anxiety suggested that women are twice as likely as men to experience a generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).
In the comparison of the symptoms of depression and anxiety, one may find several overlaps, including symptoms of sleep problems, trouble concentrating, and fatigue.
Dr. Kathleen Smith, Ph.D. in the classification of the different depression and anxiety wrote, "There are, however, some distinguishing features. People with depression move slowly, and their reactions can seem flattened or dulled. People with anxiety tend to be more keyed up, as they struggle to manage their racing thoughts. Another distinguishing feature is the presence of fear about the future in people with anxiety. Depressed people who do not have anxiety are less likely to be fraught with worry about future events, as they are often resigned to believing that things will continue to be bad. In other words, they may predict the future based on how they feel in the moment".
Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and Western world.
The National University Health System, Singapore which launched the study to examine the association between long-term tea consumption and depressive and anxiety symptoms in community-living elderly including 614 elderly aged 60 years and above, who were free of dementia and cognitive impairment suggested base on the Information on tea consumption,
* 59% of the subjects participated in the study had consumed tea for over 15 years.
* Long-term tea consumption was significantly associated with a reduced odds of having depressive and anxiety symptoms, after adjusting for demographics (i.e., age, gender, education, and ethnicity), comorbid conditions (i.e., heart disease, diabetes, stroke, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia) and long-term coffee consumption.
The findings suggested that long-term tea consumption was associated with reduced depressive and anxiety symptoms among community-living elderly. and that may be the reason that tea's bioactive compounds are used in promoting mental health in aging.
Furthermore, in the evaluate the anti-stress effect of green tea with lowered caffeine, low-caffeine green tea, on humans in a single-blind group comparison and participants (n=20) randomly assigned to low-caffeine or placebo tea groups, researchers showed that according to the state-trait anxiety inventory test.
* The subjective stress in participants was significantly lower in the low-caffeine-group than in the placebo-group during pharmacy practice.
* The level of salivary α-amylase activity, a stress marker, increased significantly after daily pharmacy practice in the placebo group but not in the low-caffeine-group.
These results suggested that the ingestion of low-caffeine green tea suppressed the excessive stress response of students.
Moreover, in the review of a systematically searched on PubMed database and selected studies by predefined eligibility criteria, researcher indicated that in out of 21 studies selected, 4 of which were randomized controlled trials, 12 cross-over studies (both assessed with an adapted version of the DELPHI-list), 4 were cross-sectional studies and one was a cohort study
* Green tea intake exerts a significant influence on the psychopathological symptoms (e.g. reduction of anxiety), cognition (e.g. benefits in memory and attention) and brain function (e.g. activation of working memory seen in functional MRI).
* The effects of green tea is not attributed to a single constituent of the beverage, but the combined influence of both caffeine and l-theanine, whereas separate administration of either substance was found to have a lesser impact.
Taken all together, there is no doubt, standard green tea may be considered a functional food in ameliorating the symptoms of depression and anxiety disorders.

Maternal Coffee > 4 Cups/day or Coffee Caffeine > 2 Cups/day Intake in the Increased Risk of Spontaneous Abortion (SAB)
Risk of spontaneous abortion (SAB) is increased substantially in the excessive coffee women during pregnancy, some studies suggested.
Spontaneous abortion is a clinically recognized pregnancy loss within the 20 weeks of gestation.
According to the World Organization of Health, fetus expulsion or extraction, weighing 500 g or less. are considered spontaneous abortion.
Believe or not, spontaneous abortion happens quite common in the early stage of pregnancy and the risk is decreased substantially with increasing gestational age.
Genetically, the causes of spontaneous abortion (SAB) are associated with mutation of genes inherited from the parents. researchers found that genes that cause the alternation of intrauterine fetal demise, blighted ovum, partial and molar pregnancy are the most common forms of spontaneous abortion.
Externally, maternal age, poor diet, excessive use of alcohol, smoking, untreated thyroid disease uncontrolled diabetes, use of certain medication and the physical problem with reproductive organs are associated with a significant risk of the incidence.
Furthermore, women who have a family history and previous miscarriage are also at the higher risk of the onset of spontaneous abortion (SAB).
Coffee, one of the most popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roasted bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.
In a case-controlled study conducted in Milan of 561 (72%) cases of spontaneous abortion and 877 (57%) controls, coffee drinking during the first trimester of the index pregnancy with healthy women who gave birth at term (> 37 weeks gestation) to healthy infants as control, researchers found that
* Coffee intake of 1, 2 or 3, and 4 or more cups of coffee per day, are associated to increase the risk of 1.2, 1.8 and 4.0, respectively in compared to nondrinkers.
* The risk of pregnancy loss also is associated to the duration in years of coffee drinking. The estimated multivariate odds ratios of spontaneous abortion were 1.1 compared to non-coffee intake group.
Furthermore, in the evaluated effect of caffeine in influence of miscarriage researchers at the Boston University School of Public Health, conducted a prospective cohort study included 5132 Danish women planning pregnancy, enrolled from 2007 to 2010, after carefully assessing the returned beverage consumption on questionnaires, researcher found that spontaneous abortion (SAB) is 1.62 higher in women consumed more than 300 mg/day of caffeine per day, in compared to 1.09 in women who consume <100 mg/day.
Specifically, women with daily intake of caffeine of
* <100 mg/day showed a materially associated with SAB risk of 1.09.
* 100-199mg/day showed a materially associated with SAB risk of 0,89.
* 200-299mg/day showed a materially associated with SAB risk of 1.33.
Interestingly, in prospective cohort study included 15,590 pregnancies from 11,072 women with no history of SAB in the Nurses' Health Study II (1991-2009) with beverage intake assessed every 4 years using a validated questionnaire in case pregnancies lost spontaneously at <20 weeks gestation, total coffee intake had a positive, linear association with SAB.
Compared to non-pre-pregnancy coffee intake, the risk of SAB increased by 20% for women consuming ≥4 servings/day.
More importantly, Dr. Gaskins AJ, the lead author said, "Pre-pregnancy coffee consumption at levels ≥4 servings/day is associated with increased risk of SAB, particularly at weeks 8-19".
Taking together, there is no doubt that caffeinated coffee may contribute to a relative risk of spontaneous abortion (SAB) for women consuming more than 4 cups per day.
Women who are pregnant between 12 to 20 weeks of gestation with excessive coffee intake habit are recommended to consult with their doctors.
