Obesity is a medical condition of excess body fat accumulated overtime, while overweight is a condition of excess body weight relatively to the height. According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), a BMI between 25 to 29.9 is considered over weight, while a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity. According to the statistic, 68% of American population are either overweight or obese.

You can calculate your BMI index BMI= weight (kg)/ height (m2)

The Studies of Ovulation in obese and lean women

Obesity is known to interfere with reproductive outcomes in polycystic ovary syndrome. According to the University of Queensland, In searched MEDLINE and several other databases from 2000 to September 2011 for studies reporting on OAT and reproductive outcomes. Data were synthesized to determine the risk ratio of reproductive outcomes (ovulation and pregnancy) in lean (BMI <25 kg/m(2)) as opposed to overweight or obese women. with 15 datasets (14 articles) obtained for analysis, included 905 subjects in the obese group and 879 subjects in the lean group, lean women had increased ovulation rates (RR 1.43, 95% CI 1.22-1.66) as compared to obese women. Pregnancy rates also showed a similar trend (RR 1.73, 95% CI 1.39-2.17). Reproductive outcomes were generally better in younger women, more recent studies and randomized controlled trials, posted in PubMed.

                         Thyroid disease

Thyroid disease is defined as a condition of malfunction of thyroid. Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland is over active and produces too much thyroid hormones.

                         Acute thyroiditis

Acute thyroiditis is defined as a condition of as a result of relatively high amount of iodine in the tissue causes of microbial inflammatory thyroiditis, pyrogenic thyroiditis and bacterial thyroiditis. Acute infectious thyroiditis is very rare, accounting for about 0.1-0.7% of all thyroiditis.

                             The Diagnosis

If you are experience certain symptoms of the above and your doctor suspects that you have developed acute thyroiditis, after recording the past and present history and completing a physical exam, including assessing symptoms and complaints commonly seen including enlarged thyroid gland, heart rate, shaking hand etc., the tests which your doctor orders may include
1. Blood test
The aim of the test is to check for the elevation of white blood cell count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, abnormal thyroid hormone levels and lkaline phosphatase, transaminases increased(26).

2. Needle aspiration
Needle aspiration is a diagnostic procedure used to investigate superficial (just under the skin) lumps or masses. . Acute suppurative thyroiditis after fine-needle aspiration (FNA) in an immunocompetent patient is very rare. We report the case of a 50-year-old immunocompetent male patient who presented with painful cervical swelling, fever, and chills after an FNA of the thyroid. His physical and laboratory examination suggested an acute suppurative thyroiditis. Repeat FNA results were consistent with thyroid abscess. Physicians should be aware of the probability of acute bacterial thyroiditis after FNA, according to the study by the Ankara University School of Medicine(27).

3. Ultrasound and oesophagography
The thyroid is remarkably resistant to infection. Hence, when an infection does occur, the presence of a pyriform fossa sinus must be considered. The Prince of Wales Hospital, presents the role of ultrasound and oesophagography in five children with pyriform fossa sinus associated with suppurative thyroiditis. In four children the abnormality was on the left and on the right in one(28).

4. CT scan
CT scan can be useful in identifying the location of the abscess, but this has been said to be required only in unusual situations.

                                          Premenstrual syndrome(PMS)

Premenstrual syndrome is defined as faulty function of the ovaries related to the women's menstrual cycle, effected over 70% to 90% of women in the US and lesser for women in Southeast Asia because of difference in living style and social structure. The syndrome also interferes women's physical and emotional states, and daily activities as a result of hormone fluctuation and occurs one to two weeks before menstruation and then declines when the period starts.

Causes of Migraine headache

Migraine headache are the most common symptoms of PMS(2), effected about 30%(1) of women just before or on the days of period. While headache does not accompany with symptoms, migraine usually followed by series of symptoms(3)(4), such as menstrual cramp and pain(4), bloating, fatigue, and irritability(3).

1. Serotonin
Serotonin secreted by the pituitary gland(5) when we come to stress(6) and during migraine attack effects the blood vessels in the brain(6), cause of irritation to the nervous system, such as affective, cognitive, and behavioural symptoms(6) and migraine headache(7)(8) last for hours(8).

2. Allergic reaction
For what whatever reasons, some women with pre menstrual syndrome may be sensitive to food such as fat, carbohydrate (P < 0.05) and simple sugars, etc. probably due to cyclical hormonal or neurotransmitter fluctuations(14). just before period cause of migraine headache(15).

3. Hormone imbalance
Levels of serotonin also showed to effect the production of reproductive hormones. Imbalance high levels of estrogen and low levels of progesterone, may cause a wide range of psychiatric disorders such as anxiety, depression, and eatingdisorders, along with other conditions such as obesity and migraine(10).

4. Medication
Some medication including psychostimulant drugs of abuse(9) and medication over uses(10) such as bromocriptine used to reduce levels of prolactin(11) for women with breast pain(12) before period may cause headache and migraine(13).

5. Magnesium deficiency
Magnesium deficiency is found to be associated to patients with migraine headache(16).
Magnesium regulates the levels of blood sugar(17)(18), and stops the blood vessels spam, during migraine attack(19).

           Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD/ADD)

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD/ADD) also known as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a chronic disease occurs in certain age and years of a children, defined as a condition with characteristics of co-existence of attentional problems and hyperactivity. It effects about 5% of the all children in the world with boys have 3-4 times higher risk than girl. Over one third of children with ADHD will have continued symptoms existed into their adult life.

                              The Causes

1. Heredity
ADHD can be an inherited form the parent as a result of abnormal genes, according to the study of "Quantitative and Molecular Genetics of ADHD" by Asherson P, Gurling H., researchers indicated that there is consistent evidence of monoamine neurotransmitter involvement with the best evidence coming from genetic markers in or near the dopamine D4 and D5 receptor genes. Recent genome-wide association studies have identified new association findings, including genes involved in cell division, cell adhesion, neuronal migration, and neuronal plasticity(2)

2. Perinatal factors
Perinatal factors such as miscarriage symptoms, premature delivery symptoms, severe flu attacks (cold with fever, without virus confirmation), tobacco abuse, alcohol abuse (to become drunk), minor congenital malformations, neonatal seizures and hospitalizations may cause ADHD to the new born, according to the study of "[Perinatal factors associated with attention deficit/hyperactivitydiagnosis in Colombian Paisa children].[Article in Spanish]" by Pineda DA, Puerta IC, Merchán V, Arango CP, Galvis AY, Velásquez B, Gómez M, Builes A, Zapata M, Montoya P, Martínez J, Salazar EO, Lopera F., posted in PubMed(3)

3. Heavy prenatal maternal smoking
Exposure to heavy maternal cigarette smoking in pregnancy and severe maternal psychosocial stress during pregnancy increase risk of ADHD as a result of neuropsychological deficits commonly seen in ADHD, according to the study of "Adverse effects of heavy prenatal maternal smoking on attentional control in children with ADHD" by Motlagh MG, Sukhodolsky DG, Landeros-Weisenberger A, Katsovich L, Thompson N, Scahill L, King RA, Peterson BS, Schultz RT, Leckman JF., posted in PubMed(4)

4. Environmental influences
In a study of 200 children with ADHD (149 males and 51 females) and 286 healthy controls (135 males and 151 females). The ADHD DSM-IV diagnosis was obtained using the DICA and BASC evaluation instruments, and the children's mothers or grandmothers filled out a questionnaire on each child's exposure to prenatal, neonatal, and early childhood risk factors, conducted by
University of San Buenaventura, researchers indicated that the risk of developingADHD must include these environmental factors as covariates(5)

5. Brain injure
The behavioural and cognitive sequelae of traumatic brain injury (TBI) have features in common with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), according to the study of "Inhibitory control in children with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)" by Konrad K, Gauggel S, Manz A, Schöll M., PubMed(6)

6. Refined Sugar
In the study of A total of 107 students participated, and eight boys and one girl (8.4% of the total) categorized as high risk for ADHD according to diagnostic criteria, conducted by Graduate School of Education, Dankook University, posted in PubMed(7), researchers indicated that children who consumed less sugar from fruit snacks or whose vitamin C intake was less than RI was at increased risks forADHD (P < 0.05). However, no significant association was observed between total volume of simple sugar intake from snacks and ADHD development.

7. Artificial food additives and dyes
Although there is contradictive results of how Artificial food additives causes of ADHD, Some reserachers do believe that the balance of existing evidence neither refutes nor supports the link between AFCs and ADHD, which highlights the need for carefully designed studies to further investigate the link between AFCs andADHD, according to the study of "A research model for investigating the effects of artificial food colorings on children with ADHD" by Kleinman RE, Brown RT, Cutter GR, Dupaul GJ, Clydesdale FM., posted in PubMed(8)

8. Toxic Substances
Toxic substances may be considered as a substantial contribution to the etiology of ADHD, as a result of affecting the dopamine system, according to the study of "Etiologic subtypes of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: brain imaging, molecular genetic and environmental factors and the dopamine hypothesis" by Swanson JM, Kinsbourne M, Nigg J, Lanphear B, Stefanatos GA, Volkow N, Taylor E, Casey BJ, Castellanos FX, Wadhwa PD., posted in PubMed(9)

9. Maternal stress during pregnancy
Maternal stress during pregnancy may increase the risk of the development ofADHD symptomatology after controlling for family history of ADHD and other environmental factors(36)

Insulin resistance (IR), one of metabolic syndrome, is a condition of failure of cellular normal response to the hormone insulin.  Patients with insulin resistance are found to have a significant risk to develop type 2 diabetes(1)(2)(3) and  Heart diseases(3).

Regular physical activity has long been found to associate to the prevention of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic diseases, but regular walking contribution of reduced risk of Insulin Resistance in the younger and older elderly have been lacking, probably due to the effectiveness of modern restrict diet(4) and psychological therapies(5) in syndrome controlling.

Recent study conducted by the Klinika za endokrinologiju, showed that 10 sessions--35 min session of walking on treadmill, intensity 60.8 +/- 5.7% (VO2)max, frequency 5 times a week), had had significant influence on the increased aerobic capacity and insulin sensitivity in the tested patients(7), as well as enhanced suppression of hepatic glucose production(8).
In the review of data of 278,989 people (111,524 males and 167,465 females) living in Chiba Prefecture who underwent consecutive medical check-ups in 2008 and 2009, Dr. Ashizawa E and colleagues at the Chiba Prefectural Institute of Public Health said, "In men, the odds of developing MetS were significantly lower for participants who exercised regularly ("walkingfast," OR=0.88, 95% CI [0.83-0.93]; and "higher physical activity," 0.85, [0.80-0.90])"(6).

Brisk walking, a popular and readily attainable form of  moderate intensity physical activity, is one of the best to suitable for the majority of individuals to improve metabolic syndrome (MetS) risk factors in overweight male subjects, according to the study by University of Tsukuba(10).

Indeed, reductions in walking  reduce insulin sensitivity and insulin signaling through a  multiple cellular processes in glucose metabolism(9) of that induced risk of  Insulin Resistance in progression of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

 Herbal Sage

Sage is a ornamental plant of the genus Salvia, belonging to family Lamiaceae, native to the Central and South America, Central, Eastern Asia and Mediterranean. The herb has been used in traditional medicine as carminative, antiperspirant, antispasmodic, astringent, antiseptic, and antibiotic agent and to calm the central nervous system, treat spasms in smooth and skeletal muscles, relieve digestive problems, regulate menstruation, etc.

Health Benefits
1. Cognitive effects
In the observation of the cholinesterase inhibitory properties and phytochemical constituents of a S. lavandulaefolia essential oil, with a double-blind, placebo-controlled, balanced crossover study assessing the effects of a single dose on cognitive performance and mood, found that oral consumption lead to improved performance of secondary memory and attention tasks, most notably at the 1-h post-dose testing session, and reduced mental fatigue and increased alertness which were more pronounced 4-h post-dose. These results extend previous observations of improved cognitive performance and mood following AChE inhibitory sage extracts and suggest that the ability of well-tolerated terpenoid-containing extracts to beneficially modulate cholinergic function and cognitive performance deserves further attention, according to "Monoterpenoid extract of sage (Salvia lavandulaefolia) with cholinesterase inhibiting properties improves cognitive performance and mood in healthy adults" by Kennedy DO, Dodd FL, Robertson BC, Okello EJ, Reay JL, Scholey AB, Haskell CF.

2. Antioxidants
In the investigation of sage teas prepared from commercially available products were chemically analyzed for polyphenolic content using liquid chromatography, for antioxidant potential, found that The FC index also showed a high correlation to these polyphenols, and could therefore be used as a screening parameter for sage tea quality. The considerable differences in polyphenolic composition and antioxidant capacity between the brands lead to a demand for quality standardization, especially if these sage teas are to be used for therapeutic purposes, according to "Antioxidant Capacity and Polyphenolic Composition as Quality Indicators for Aqueous Infusions of Salvia officinalis L. (sage tea)"by Walch SG, Tinzoh LN, Zimmermann BF, Stühlinger W, Lachenmeier DW.(2)

3. Anti diabetes
In the deiermination of The use of thujone, a monoterpene ketone often present in sage (Salvia officinalis L.) or wormwood (Artemisia absinthium L.), for the treatment of diabetes mellitus found that after oral treatment with thujone (5 mg/kg bodyweight (bw)/day for 28 days), the cholesterol and triglyceride levels were significantly adjusted to normal levels when compared to diabetic, untreated rats. While these results sound promising and worthy of further investigation, the well-defined profile of the adverse properties of thujone demands a cautious interpretation of these results, according to "The choice of thujone as drug for diabetes" by Lachenmeier DW, Walch SG.(3)

4. Anti cancers
In the identification of the cytotoxicity of the essential oil from sage on the squamous human cell carcinoma cell line of the oral cavity (UMSCC1) was assessed with the XTT assay
found that for the first time the ability of Salvia officinalis essential oil to inhibit human HNSCC cell growth. The therapeutic potential of sage essential oil might exceed that of its common use in otorhinolaryngology, according to "[Anticancer activity of Salvia officinalis essential oil against HNSCC cell line (UMSCC1)]. [Article in German]" by Sertel S, Eichhorn T, Plinkert PK, Efferth T.(4)

5. Alzheimer's disease
In the searching for the extracts of plants and their effect on the amelioration of AD symptoms, found that these effects are induced by extracts of a few plants of different origin like Yizhi Jiannao, Moringa oleifera (Drumstick tree), Ginkgo Biloba (Ginkgo/Maidenhair tree), Cassia obtisufolia (Sicklepod), Desmodium gangeticum (Sal Leaved Desmodium), Melissa officinalis (Lemon Balm), and Salvia officinalis (Garden sage, common sage), according to "Effect of plant extracts on Alzheimer's disease: An insight into therapeutic avenues" by Obulesu M, Rao DM.(5)

6. Menopause symptoms
In the determination od the effect of Sage (Salvia officinalis) used traditionally to treat sweating and menopausal hot flushes, as well as to alleviate associated menopausal symptoms and as a general tonic, found that a fresh sage preparation demonstrated clinical value in the treatment of hot flushes and associated menopausal symptoms, according to "First time proof of sage's tolerability and efficacy in menopausal women with hot flushes" by Bommer S, Klein P, Suter A.(6)

7. Antihyperlipidemic effects
In the investigation of the effect of sage a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial with 67 hyperlipidemic (hypercholesterolemic and/or hypertriglyceridemic) patients aged 56.4 ± 30.3 years (mean ± SD), found that The extract lowered the blood levels of total cholesterol (p < 0.001), triglyceride (p = 0.001), LDL (p = 0.004) and VLDL (p = 0.001), but increased the blood HDL levels (p < 0.001) without any significant effects on the blood levels of SGOT, SGPT and creatinine (p > 0.05) compared with the placebo group at the endpoint. No adverse effects were reported, according to "Antihyperlipidemic effects of Salvia officinalis L. leaf extract in patients with hyperlipidemia: a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial" by Kianbakht S, Abasi B, Perham M, Hashem Dabaghian F.(7)

8. HIV-1 infection
In the assessment of the effects of the mint family (Lamiaceae), including sage (Salvia spp.), on antiviral activity, found that the ability of P. vulgaris aqueous extracts to inhibit early events within the HIV life cycle suggests that these extracts, or purified constituents responsible for the antiviral activity, are promising microbicides and/or antivirals against HIV-1, according to 'Inhibition of HIV-1 infection by aqueous extracts of Prunella vulgaris L" by Oh C, Price J, Brindley MA, Widrlechner MP, Qu L, McCoy JA, Murphy P, Hauck C, Maury W.(8)

9. Antioxidant and antimicrobial activities
In the evaluation the anti oxidant and microbal actinities of Salvia officinalis L. oils found that the oils isolated for 2 and 3 h were stronger free radical scavengers, while with the a thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) method, the highest antioxidant values were obtained in the oils isolated for 30 min, 2 and 3 h. Hydroxyl radical scavenging and lipoxygenase activity assays showed the best results with oils isolated for 1 and 3 h. With the deoxyribose method, sage oils at concentrations <1000 mg L(-1) showed better activity than mannitol. The essential oil of S. officinalis showed very weak antimicrobial activity, according to "Salvia officinalis L. essential oils: effect of hydrodistillation time on the chemical composition, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities" by Miguel G, Cruz C, Faleiro ML, Simões MT, Figueiredo AC, Barroso JG, Pedro LG.(9)

10. Antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects
In the investigation of The analgesic effects of the aqueous extract (10, 31.6, 100, 316, 1000 mg/kg) and butanol extract (10, 31.6, 100, 316 mg/kg) were studied using the hot-plate test for mice and the formalin-induced paw licking in rats, found that the sage leaf aqueous and butanol extracts have analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects, confirming the traditional use of this plant for pain alleviation, according to "The antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects of Salvia officinalis leaf aqueous and butanol extracts" by Qnais EY, Abu-Dieyeh M, Abdulla FA, Abdalla SS.(10)

In the examination of the effect of the polyphenolic extract from Geranium carolinianum L. (PPGC) on HBV replication both in vitro and in vivo, found that in human, HBV-transfected liver cell line HepG(2) 2.2.15, PPGC effectively suppressed the secretion of the HBV antigens in a dose-dependent manner with IC(50) values of 46.85 microg/ml for HBsAg and 65.60 microg/ml for HBeAg at day 9. Consistent with the HBV antigen reduction, PPGC (100 microg/ml) also reduced HBV DNA level by 35.9%. In the duck hepatitis B virus (DHBV) infected ducks, after PPGC was dosed intragastricly (i.g.) once a day for 10 days, the plasma DHBV DNA level was reduced, with an ED(50) value of 47.54 mg/kg(1).
