Herbal Chamomile processed a high amount of antioxidant may have a strong and profound neuroprotective effect against the onset of cognitive impairment, according to studies.
Cognitive impairment is a medical condition associated with a decline in cognitive abilities, including memory and thinking skills.
Approximately 15 to 20% of cognitive impairment are diagnosed in people age 65 or older. However, if the condition of cognitive impairment gets worse over time, it eventually leads to dementia that compromises social and/or occupational functioning.
In the early stage of cognitive impairment, patients may experience symptoms of hallucinations. delusions, personality changes, apathy, and some depression and anxiety symptoms.
If you are experiencing some of the above symptoms, please make you check with your doctors to rule out the possibility.
Although there are many factors associated with the onset of cognitive impairment, some researchers suggested that aging is the major cause of the condition in the Western world.
Therefore, finding a strategy for the delay of cognitive impairment in the elderly has become more urgent. Dr. Blanka Klimova, and colleagues in the dementia team at the University Hospital Hradec Kralove and University Hradec Kralove in the concern of the risk of cognitive impairment in aging wrote, " physical activities, such as walking and aerobic exercises, music therapy, adherence to Mediterranean diet, or solving crosswords, seem to be very promising lifestyle intervention tools"
And, "The results indicate that non-pharmacological lifestyle intervention activities should be intense and possibly done simultaneously in order to be effective in the prevention of cognitive decline. In addition, more longitudinal randomized controlled trials are needed in order to discover the most effective types and the duration of these intervention activities in the prevention of cognitive decline, typical of aging population groups"
Chamomile is also known as camomile, the common name of many species daisy-like plants in the family Asteraceae.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory constituent and for the treatment of menstrual cramps and sleep disorders, reduce cramping and spastic pain in the bowels, relieve excessive gas and bloating in the intestine, etc.
Scientists on finding an herbal remedy which processes neuroprotective effects examined the chamomile activity against the onset of oxidative stress which is considered a key role in the pathophysiology of many neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease.
Aluminum fluoride (AlF₄⁻)-induced oxidative stress in rats selected to the study were divided randomly into group I received normal saline; group II received AlF₄⁻ (negative control); groups III, IV, and V received 100, 200, and 300 mg/kg, orally, German chamomile methanol extract (GCME) along with AlF₄⁻; and group VI received quercetin (25 mg/kg, i.p.) + AlF₄⁻, respectively.
The experiment included a 10 days treatment with GCME before the animal induced oxidative stress by administering AlF₄⁻ through drinking water for 7 days.
Administration of GCME inhibited the levels of oxidative stress through increasing the production of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host and decrease in lipid peroxidation (LPO).
Compared with the negative control group (P < 0.001), chamomile displayed a potent neuroprotective action against oxidative brain damage.
In rat induced oxidative stress by global cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, application of methanolic extract showed dose-dependent neuroprotective activity by a significant decrease in lipid peroxidation (LPO) and increase in the superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione (GSH) similar to that of the above study.
The treatment group also showed a significantly reduced vertebral infarction area in extract treated groups, compared to the untreated group.
Dr. Chandrashekhar VM, the lead scientists, said, "The methanolic extract of Matricaria recutita L. showed potent neuroprotective activity against global cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury-induced oxidative stress in rats".
Taken altogether, herbal chamomile which demonstrates the brain neurons protective effect against oxidative stress in the initiation of neurodegenerative diseases, may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary therapy for the treatment of dementia.

Celery, The Functional Food Which Protects the Brian Neuron Against Alzheimer’s disease (AD)
Celery may be the next generation of the natural and pharmaceutical target to discover the major ingredient for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, some scientists suggested.
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a brain disorder correlated with major reductions of neurons to the respective target areas, named after German physician Alois Alzheimer.
People who are experiencing symptoms of mild confusion and difficulty remembering at an older age are eventually developing Alzheimer’s disease.
Although researchers do not know the exact cause of AD. However, they do know certain prevalent risk factors such as genetic proposition, unhealthy diet, and lifestyle, and environmental conditions are associated with the increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
According to the genetic analysis, people who carry the mutation genes associated with the autosomal-dominant AD (APP, PSEN1, PSEN2) and APOE4, affecting approximately 12 percent of the U.S. population are associated to the increased risk of the late-onset AD.
The Western diet with high in saturated and trans fat, red meat, processed foods and low in fruits and vegetables and whole grain are also the major risk factor that causes the disease due the diet in promoting insulin resistance, decreased endothelial production of nitric oxide, free radical excess, inflammatory metabolites, homocysteine, and oestrogen deficiency.
Dr. Berrino F, the researchers at the Istituto nazionale per lo studio e la cura dei tumori in the investigation of the correlation among patients with the AD and follow the Western diet before the disease onset said, "theoretically (AD) be prevented (or delayed) by relatively simple dietary measures aimed at increasing insulin sensitivity (through reduction of refined sugars and saturated fats from meat and dairy products), the ratio between n-3 and n-6 fatty acids (e.g. from fish and respectively seed oils), antioxidant vitamins, folic acid, vitamin B6, phytoestrogens (vegetables, whole cereals, and legumes, including soy products), vitamin B12 (bivalve molluscs, liver), and Cr, K, Mg, and Si salts".
These results suggested if you follow a lifestyle with moderate exercise and prevented exposure to chemical toxicity, before the disease onset you are at the substantially lower the risk of Alzheimer’s disease (AD).
Celery is a species of Apium graveolens, belonging to the family Apiaceae. It is cultivated all around the globe as a vegetable.
The veggie can grow to 1/2 m tall with stalks (leaf on the top) arranging in a conical shape joined at a common base.
Researchers on the team of neurodegenerative program at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College in the reaffirm the effect of Chinese celery on neuroprotective effects showed that L-3-n-butylphthalide (L-NBP), an extract from celery seeds demonstrates a significant activity in inhibiting oxidative injury, neuronal apoptosis, and glial activation, reducing amyloid-β protein precursor (AβPP) processing and Aβ generation in rat model.
The study focuses on the neuro effect of 12 months old AβPP/PS1 mice given 15 mg/kg L-NBP by oral gavage for 3 months.
At the end of the experiment, L-NBP treatment significantly improved the spatial learning and memory deficits, compared to the vehicle-treated AβPP/PS1 mice.
The expressions of the cyclin-dependent kinase in regulating cell cycle and glycogen synthase kinase 3β in regulating cell migration, the most important kinases involved in tau phosphorylation found abundant in neurons of the central nervous, were markedly decreased by L-NBP treatment.
These results indicated the progression of the AD in the alternation of neuron cells expression were inhibited by the application of L-NBP.
This reduction of tau phosphorylation and kinases activations caused by injection of L-NBP was observed in the biomarker of neuro-cell differentiation.
Unfortunately, the application did not exert any effect on cerebral Aβ plaque deposition and Aβ levels in brain homogenates.
Dr. Peng Y, the lead scientist wrote, " L-NBP shows promising candidate of multi-target neuronal protective agent for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease."
Further assessment of the effects of L-NBP on learning and memory in a triple-transgenic AD mouse model (3xTg-AD) that develops both plaques and tangles with aging, as well as cognitive deficits, researchers found that after Ten-month-old 3xTg-AD mice were given 15 mg/kg L-NBP by oral gavage for 18 weeks
* L-NBP treatment significantly improved learning deficits and long-term spatial memory, compared with vehicle control treatment.
* L-NBP treatment significantly reduced total cerebral Abeta plaque deposition and lowered Abeta levels in brain homogenates but had no effect on fibrillar Abeta plaques.
* L-NBP markedly enhanced soluble amyloid precursor protein secretion (alphaAPPs), alpha-secretase, and PKCalpha expression that have been known in the prevention of the molecular mechanisms underlying Alzheimer's disease (AD).
* L-NBP treatment in 3xTg-AD mice also reduced glial activation and oxidative stress compared with control treatment, an indication of AD inhibition.
These remarkable results once again, indicated that L-NBP can be promising preclinical potential as a multitarget drug for the prevention and/or treatment of Alzheimer's disease.
Taken all together, celery processed a high amount bioactive compound L-3-n-butylphthalide (L-NBP) may be considered a functional food in the prevention and combined with primary therapy for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD).
However, further data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food or its bioactive compounds during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of celery anti-Alzheimer's disease possibilities.

Honey, The Potential Food for Obesity Control
Compared to an ideal weight, that reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, body weight greater than 20 percent is considered obese.
Obesity is a medical condition caused by excess body fat has accumulated over time, while overweight is a condition of excess body weight relative to the height.
According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), a BMI between 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight, while a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity.
Epidemiological studies in the investigation of the complication of obesity found that cardiovascular problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, accelerated atherosclerosis, and stroke... and chronic lower back pain are most common disease complications associated with obesity.
According to data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 2013–2014, more than 1 in 3 and 13 adults in the US were considered to have obesity and extreme obesity, respectively.
Although there are many risk factors involved in the onset of the disease, some researchers suggested an unhealthy lifestyle is one of the major causes of obesity in the Western world.
Dr. Robert F. Kushner, in the examination of the unhealthy lifestyle risk of obesity of the 53‐item lifestyle pattern questionnaire posted on a commercial weight loss program Web site collected from 2004 through 2008, wrote, "unhealthy lifestyle patterns in diet, exercise, and coping were highly prevalent among this population".
The results findings clearly suggested a strong correlation between diet, exercise, and obesity.
Honey, the rich golden liquid is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.
The liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.
In the urgency to find a natural remedy for the treatment of widespread obesity in the Western world, researchers evaluated the potential of honey consumption in controlling obesity.
The study compared the two local Malaysian honey types: Gelam and Acacia honey activities in reducing excess weight gain and other parameters related to obesity.
Male Sprague-Dawley rats selected to the study were induced obese by a high-fat diet (HFD) prior to introduction with/without honey or orlistat for four weeks.
Rats fed with Gelam honey showed significant reductions in excess weight gain and adiposity index compared to HFD rats.
Furthermore, parameters related to obesity such as levels of plasma glucose, triglycerides, and cholesterol, plasma leptin and resistin, liver enzymes, renal function, and relative organ weight in Gelam and Acacia honey treated groups were reduced significantly, compared to obese rats.
Compared to the treatment of orlistat, Gelam and Acacia honey showed similar results without inducing hepatotoxicity effects.
Hepatotoxicity is a known side effect of orlistat.
Where Orlistat is a drug used for the treatment of obesity, sold over-the-counter as Alli by GlaxoSmithKline in the United Kingdom and the United States.
Dr. Samat S, the lead scientists wrote in the final report, "consumption of honey can be used to control obesity by regulating lipid metabolism and appears to be more effective than orlistat".
Taken altogether, hiney, particularly Gelam and Acacia honey may be considered anti-obesity functional remedies with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Bilberry, The Plant and Berry That Cure Dry Eye, Scientists Discover
Dry eye is a condition characterized by a lack of quality tears to lubricate and nourish the eye for clear vision.
In other words, dry eye is a condition caused by an imbalance of tear production and drainage or low-quality tear production. The condition is very common in the elderly.
There are certain risk factors that may affect the levels of quality of tears, such as aging (most senior age 65 and over have experience of dry eye), gender (the risk of dry eye is higher in women due to the change of hormone as a result of pregnancy and menopause), medications and long term of use of contact lens.
According to the statistics, in the United States, dry eye affects over 4.88 million Americans age 50 and older. The syndrome is most common in the population of middle-aged or older.
Although it is rare, untreated dry eye or serious dry eye syndrome has been associated with the risk of infection, leading to scarring, thinning, and even perforation of the cornea.
People with dry eye may experience symptoms of burning or scratchy sensation, stringy mucus in the eyes, eye redness and sensitivity to light.
Some people with the severe condition may have difficulty with nighttime driving.
If you have experienced some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility for preventive measure.
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
Researchers on finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of dry eye, a chronic disease of lachrymal fluid and cornea-conjunctival epithelium examined the bioavailability of a standardized bilberry extract in an animal model.
The study included 22 otherwise healthy subjects suffering from dry eye symptoms who were enrolled randomly assigned to receive the more bioavailable bilberry extract or placebo.
Out of 22 participants,11 subjects in the bilberry extract (Mirtoselect®) group and 10 subjects in the placebo group completed the clinical study.
According to the results of the assay analysis, bilberry extract showed a significant improvement in the volume of tear secretion compared to no change in the placebo group.
Mirtoselect® also was more effective in subjects with a higher tendency of dry eye.
The efficacy of bilberry in the treatment of dry eye was attributed to the stimulation of the production of antioxidant enzymes in the host and suppression of the overexpression of free radicals found in the dry eye participants.
Dr. Riva A the lead scientists suggested that bilberry extract can improve tear secretion and plasmatic antioxidant potential in subjects suffering from DED symptoms.
Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compounds may be considered a natural remedy for the treatment of dry eye with no side effects, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Avocado, the Next Prominent Anti Prostate Cancer Functional Fruit, Scientists Say
Avocado may be the generation whole fruit medicine for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer with no side effects, some scientists found
Prostate cancer is a medical condition in which the cells of the prostate has become cancerous, causing abnormal cells growth.
Most prostate cancers are slow growing and can be detected during the physical (rectum) exams.
Most cases of prostate cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the prostate tissues.
At the advanced stage, as the tumor continues to grow, it may suppress the nearly healthy tissue and nerve cells leading to severe symptoms and pain.
According to the statistic provided by the American Cancer Society, 1 in 9 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. Approximately, 6 cases in 10 are diagnosed in men aged 65 or older.
Most common symptoms of prostate cancer include frequent urination, weak or interrupted urine flow or the need to strain to empty the bladder. and the urge to urine frequently at night due to the large size of the tumor that suppresses the bladder and the flow of urine.
Some patients may also experience symptoms blood in the urine, blood in the seminal fluid and pain or burning during urination caused by the tumor that breaks the nearby small veins and nerve cells.
At this stage, cancerous cells from the prostate gland can also travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organ, leading to the secondary metastasis.
There are many risk factors associated with the onset of prostate cancer. However, the increase in age, location and behavioral correlates are some prevalent risk of the disease onset.
According to the University of Zurich, factors that may enhance prostate cancer risk include frequent consumption of dairy products and, possibly, meat and increased physical activity, intakes of tomatoes, cruciferous vegetables, and soy are possible preventative behavioral factors.
These results indicated that by following a healthy diet with moderate exercise, the risk of prostate cancer can be reduced substantially.
Avocado is a commercially valuable fruit cultivated in tropical climates throughout the world. It is a green-skinned, pear-shaped fruit that ripens after harvesting and native to the Caribbean, Mexico, South America, and Central America, belonging to the flowering plant family Lauraceae.
With an aim to discover a natural ingredient or whole food for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer with no side effects, researchers at the University of the West Indies investigate the intake of dietary MUFAs from whole fruit of avocado in the risk of prostate cancer (PCa).
The case study included 209 men 40-80 years old with newly diagnosed, histologically confirmed prostate cancer and 226 cancer-free men, attending the same urology clinics.
Higher intakes of dietary MUFA were inversely related to prostate cancer. The principal source of dietary MUFA of the participants was avocado intake. Dietary intakes of other fats were not associated with PCa.
Dr. Jackson MD, the lead author wrote in the report, "Whole-blood and dietary MUFA reduced the risk of prostate cancer. The association may be related to avocado intakes".
Researchers at the University of California agreed that the avocado is known as a rich source of monounsaturated fatty acids, for treatment of prostate cancer, but suggested that other bioactive substances including carotenoids, which might contribute to cancer preventive properties similar to those attributed to other fruits and vegetables.
In vitro, injection of acetone extract of avocado containing carotenoids and tocopherols inhibited the growth of both androgen-dependent (LNCaP) and androgen-independent (PC-3) prostate cancer cell lines.
Incubation of PC-3 cells with the avocado extract led to G(2)/M cell cycle arrest accompanied by an increase in p27 protein expression, a protein that regulates the cell cycle.
Lutein combined with other bioactive compounds also exerted a similar effect in inhibiting the prostate cancer cell spreading, but the chemical compound alone did not reproduce the effects of the avocado extract on cancer cell proliferation.
These result strongly indicated, the avocado anti-prostate cancer efficacy probably is associated with all bioactive compounds containing in the fruit such as monounsaturated fat, and carotenoids.
In order to illustrate the importance of the whole fruit in the inhibition of prostate cancer, researchers examined the 3 newly isolated compounds from unripe avocado, and found that all 3 compounds exert significant activity against six human tumor cell lines in culture and show selectivity for human prostate adenocarcinoma (PC-3) cells with 3 being nearly as potent as adriamycin.
Dr. Lu QY, after taking into account other factors said, "Because the avocado also contains a significant amount of monounsaturated fat, these bioactive carotenoids are likely to be absorbed into the bloodstream, where in combination with other diet-derived phytochemicals they may contribute to the significant cancer risk reduction associated with a diet of fruits and vegetables".
Taken altogether, avocado with abundant bioactive active compounds and MUFAs may be considered a functional fruit for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Strawberry Effects on Human Type 1 Allergy
The antigen is a toxin or other foreign pathogens that induce an immune response in the body, by stimulating the production of antibodies IgE.
According to the statistic, approximately 50 million Americans each year suffer from an allergy-related disease or condition. and the syndrome is a sixth leading cause of chronic illness in the US.
Epidemiological studies suggested that people with certain medical conditions such as asthma, family history of allergy and asthma and are younger than the age of 18 are at the increased risk of allergy.
Food allergies of type I which are mediated by food-specific IgE antibodies by signaling the release of histamine from the mast cells upon the contact with the relevant allergen, causing symptoms of skin, nose, throat, and lung irritation.
The genetic proposition is also one of the prevalent risk factors for allergic onset. Dr. Romina A. Ortiz, the lead author in the examine the genetic risk in allergic diseases, wrote, "The allergic diseases are complex phenotypes for which a strong genetic basis has been firmly established" and "A major outcome of Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in allergic disease has been the formation of national and international collaborations leading to consortia meta-analyses, and an appreciation for the specificity of genetic associations to sub-phenotypes of allergic disease".
The genes which have a potential cause of the allergic disease include ORMDL3 locus with childhood asthma and generalizability of FLG mutations with allergic diathesis.,...
Strawberry is a genius of Fragaria × ananassa belongs to the family Roseaceae. They have been grown all over the world with a suitable climate for commercial profits and for health benefits.
The major chemical compounds include anthocyanin and ellagitannins and p-Hydroxybenzoic acid, p-coumaric acid, ellagic acid, cyanidin-3-glucoside, pelargonidin-3-glucoside, kaempferol, quercetin, and myricetin.
On finding potential and natural whole food for the prevention and treatment of type 1 allergy with no side effects, scientists at the Gifu University evaluated the anti-allergic activity of chemical constituents isolated from the strawberry.
Linocinnamarin (LN), 1-O-trans-cinnamoyl-beta-d-glucopyranose (CG), and cinnamic acid (CA) from the fruit were found to exert a significant effect against exhibited antigen (Ag) in stimulating the cellular process that releases antimicrobial cytotoxicity in rat basophilic leukemia RBL-2H3 cells.
On cellular responses induced by antigen stimulation, LN and CA markedly inhibited antigen-stimulated the elevation of intracellular free Ca(2+) concentration which plays an important role in T cell activation and reactive oxygen species (ROS).
The results were associated with the suppression of the Ag-stimulated spleen tyrosine kinase (Syk) activation that mediates immune receptors associated with antibody and antigen.
Further analysis of the efficacy of LN and CA, researchers discovered that the inhibition of antigen-by LN and CA is mainly due to inactivation of Syk/phospholipase Cgamma (PLCgamma) pathways which control both the innate and adaptive immune systems.
Dr. Ninomiya M, said in the final report, "LN and CA isolated from F. ananassa Duch. (strawberry) could be beneficial agents for alleviating symptoms of type I allergy".
Other bioactive compounds isolated from strawberry including isolated the 4 kinds of flavonoids from strawberry 'Nohime' also were found to exert similar effects on the cellular process that releases antimicrobial cytotoxicity in RBL-2H3 cells in the Gifu International Institute of Biotechnology study.
The found flavonoids demonstrated a strong effect on the intracellular free Ca(2+) concentration ([Ca(2+)]i) and PLCgammas similar to those of the above study.
Treatment of flavonoids also displayed a strong effect on the intracellular signaling pathway associated with the regulation of immune cell function.
Dr. Itoh T, the lead author at the end of the experiment wrote, " suppression of Ag-stimulated degranulation by the flavonoids is mainly due to suppression of [Ca(2+)]i elevation and Syk activation".
Taken altogether, strawberry, the tasty fruit processed high amounts of bioactive compounds may be considered a function fruit for the prevention and treatment of type 1 allergy with no side effects.

Tualang Honey, The Potential Anti Cervical Cancer Functional Food
Scientists may have located a natural whole food for the prevention and treatment of cervical cancer with no side effects, some studies found.
Cervical cancer is the chronic condition caused cell growth disorderly in the tissue of the cervix.
Most cases of cervical cancer start on the cells in the surface of the inner lining tissue of the cervix.
Most patients at this stage of cervical cancer do not experience any symptoms.
As cancer progresses, most patients may experience the symptoms of blood spots or light bleeding between or following periods, longer than usual and heavy menstrual bleeding, increased vaginal discharge, particularly, bleeding after intercourse, douching.
At this stage, cervical cancer can travel a distance away to cause metastasis to other healthy tissue and organs through fluids and blood circulation.
If you have experienced some of the above symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the cervical cancer possibility.
Although certain risk factors such as having many sexual partners, long-term use of birth control pills (oral contraceptives), early engaging in sexual contact are associated with the onset of the disease, Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is one of major cause that has been under intensive investigation.
Belief or not, there are over 100 different HPV types have been identified and classified as high risk in almost all cervical cancers (>99.7%).
Out of this 100 different HPV, HPV16 is the most prevalent type in both low-grade disease and cervical neoplasia.
Dr. Doorbar J at the National Institute for Medical Research, said, "Most cervical cancers arise within the cervical transformation zone at the squamous/columnar junction, and it has been suggested that this is a site where productive infection may be inefficiently supported"
"Cancers usually arise in individuals who fail to resolve their infection and who retain oncogene expression for years or decades. In most individuals, immune regression eventually leads to clearance of the virus, or to its maintenance in a latent or asymptomatic state in the basal cells".
These results clearly stage, most of the initiation of HPV infection is stopped by the immune system first line of defense before the virus penetrates through the cervical cell membrane on the surface of the inner lining.
In other words, women who have a weakened immune system are at substantial risk to the disease.
Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.
The rich golden liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.
On finding a natural ingredient or whole food for the prevention and treatment of cervical cancer, researchers examined the Tualang honey (Agromas) anti-cancer effect.
Tualang honey (Agromas) (TH) were applied with increasing doses of TH (1-10%) for up to 72 h to the human breast (MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231) and cervical (HeLa) cancer cell lines; as well as in the normal breast epithelial cell line, MCF-10A.
At concentrations (EC(50)) of 2.4-2.8%., Tualang honey increased in lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) leakage from the cancer cell membranes, an indication of cytotoxicity to all three cancer cells.
Furthermore, application of TH also reduced the mitochondrial membrane potential (Δψ(m)) in response to energy storage in the cancer cell lines after 24h of treatment.
TH also stimulated the proteins associated with cancer cells apoptosis.
The evidence suggested that TH has significant anticancer activity against human cervical cancer cell lines.
Additionally, in the evaluation of bee bread (BB), a fermented mixture of plant pollen, honey, and bee saliva against HeLa (cervical carcinoma) cancer cells line, researchers found that application of BB displays a moderate activity in the inhibition of the cancer cell line through cytotoxicity with doses ranging from >400 to 68 µg/mL).
The inhibition of the human cervical cancer cell line was attributed to the main phenolic compounds also found abundantly in the Tualang honey.
The in-depth analysis suggested that BB induces HeLa cell death through stimulating the function of free radicals in the induction of oxidative stress to cause cytotoxicity.
Taken altogether, honey or Tualang honey may be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with the primary therapy for the treatment of cervical cancer.
