Herbal Artichoke Normalizes the Levels of Serum Cholesterol in Vivo and Human Study

Hyperlipidemia is a chronic condition of abnormally high blood cholesterol in the bloodstream.

Furthermore, the total neutral sterol and bile acids concentrations also increased significantly by 50% and 53% in fecal samples of ALE fed males, and 82.4% and 25% in ALE fed females compared with controls.

Dr. Qiang Z, after taking into account other factors, said, "he ALE lowered hamster plasma cholesterol levels by a mechanism involving the greater excretion of fecal bile acids and neutral sterols after feeding for 42 days".

In order to reveal more information about artichoke anti-high blood cholesterol property, researchers evaluated the effects of artichoke leaf extract (ALE) supplementation (250 mg, 2 b.i.d.) on the lipid pattern,

The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial included 92 overweight subjects with primary mild hypercholesterolemia for 8 weeks.

46 subjects were randomized to supplementation (age: 54.2 ± 6.6 years, body mass index (BMI): 25.8 ± 3.9 kg/m(2), male/female: 20/26) and 46 subjects to placebo (age: 53.8 ± 9.0 years, BMI: 24.8 ± 1.6 kg/m(2), male/female: 21/25).


Artichoke leaf extract (ALE) supplementation was associated with a significant increase in mean high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol (p < 0.001) and in mean change in HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) (p = 0.004).


Moreover, ALE also significantly decreased the mean change in total cholesterol (p = 0.033), low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol (p < 0.001), total cholesterol/HDL ratio (p < 0.001) and LDL/HDL ratio (p < 0.001) comapred to control.


The findings clearly supported the use of artichoke leaf extract ALE for the treatment of patients with mild high blood cholesterol.

Taken altogether, artichoke may be considered a functional formula for the treatment of patients with high blood cholesterol with no side effects, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

332 subjects data (209 men and 123 women) treated with anthocyanins (n=132), GBE (n=103), or no medication (control, n=97) were reviewed.

According to the tested assays, the mean anthocyanin treatment duration was 24.32±10.43 (range, 6-53) months, and the mean GBE treatment duration was 23.81±10.36 months (range, 6-59) months.


After anthocyanin treatment, the mean best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) for all eyes improved from 0.16 logMAR units, and Humphrey Visual Field (HVF) mean deviation improved from -6.44.


Dr. Shim SH, the lead scientist said, "These results suggest that anthocyanins and GBE may be helpful in improving visual function in some individuals with NTG".

Also, in the comparison of the antibacterial property of other types of honey and Manuka honey, researchers showed that Manuka honey was the most effective against Staphylococcus aureus Oxa R and S. aureus Oxa S with a Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of 6% and 7%, respectively, compared to the wild carrot honey with a MIC of 12%.

Furthermore, tested Manuka honey contained the highest content of polyphenols, with 899.09 ± 11.75 mg gallic acid/kg, whereas lavender honey had the lowest, with 111.42 ± 3.54 mg gallic acid/kg.


Dr. the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "The differences between honey samples in terms of antibacterial and antioxidant activity could be attributed to the natural variations in floral sources of nectar and the different locations".

Herbal Artichoke, the Best Anti-Aging Functional Remedy

Skin aging is a natural process which can not be stopped. However, some people may look younger compared to their biological age.

According to the prominent oxidative stress theory, long-term accumulation of cells damage due to overexpression of free radicals in the skin can lead to early skin aging.

The joint study led by the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio suggested, alterations in oxidative damage/stress also play a role in aging. In other words, long-term unhealthy lifestyle such as excessive alcohol drinking, substances abuse, smoking, physical inactivity not only can reduce the gene effect on longevity but also increase the risk of early skin aging and shorten the proposed life span.

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as liver protective and detoxified agent, and for the treatment of digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

Researchers on the finding a natural therapeutic which processed antiaging property investigated the anti-age effect of a polyphenolic artichoke extract on endothelial cells.

Injection of the extract showed a significant anti-aging activity by exhibiting the important molecular markers responsible for the microcirculation and vasodilatation of endothelial cells, through its anti-inflammatory function, and protecting the lymphatic vessels from oxidative damage by ROS formation, and enhancing the cellular cohesion by reinforcing the tight junction complex.

In other words, the polyphenolic artichoke extracts exhibited anti-age effect against the skin and subcutaneous tissue damage caused by overexpression of proinflammatory cytokines associated with the production of free radical and depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host.


The anti-aging efficacy was attributed to the combined activity of constituents found in the herbal medicine, including 87% of chlorogenic, 3,5-O-dicaffeoylquinic, and 1,5-O-dicaffeoylquinic acids.

Furthermore, polyphenolic artichoke extract improved the expression of genes involved in anti-aging mechanisms.

On human subjects, an artichoke extract cosmetic formulation also reduced 19.74% of roughness and enhanced 11.45% of elasticity, compared to a placebo cream.

Furthermore, in UVB-induced photoaging, researchers examined antioxidant activity of Cynaropicrin (Cyn), a sesquiterpene lactone, and major bioactive phytochemical in the artichoke.


Cynaropicrin (Cyn) attenuated UVB-induced oxidative stress by activating the AhR-Nrf2-Nqo1 pathway associated with the production of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory factors against oxidative stress.

In other words, in anti-aging perspective, Cyn not only actively inhibited the generation of reactive oxygen species from keratinocytes irradiated with ultraviolet B (UVB), but also the production of proinflammatory cytokines such as interleukin 6 and tumor necrosis factor-α from UVB-treated keratinocytes.

Taken altogether, artichoke processed high amounts of bioactive compounds may be used as a functional antiaging remedy with no side effects, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Whole Food Ginger, the Natural Treatment of Premenstrual Syndrome With No Side Effects, according to A Human Study

Scientists may have found a natural kitchen spice for the treatment of premenstrual syndrome symptoms (PMS) with no side effects.

Premenstrual syndrome is a condition caused by the faulty function of the ovaries related to the women's menstrual cycle, due to hormone fluctuation in one to two weeks before menstruation and then declines when the period starts.

PMS affects over 70% to 90% of women in the US compared to a lesser affection to women in Southeast Asia because of the different living style and social structure.

Most common symptoms of PMS include fatigue, fluid retention breast tenderness, acne, sleep disturbances and appetite changes with overeating or food cravings.


PMS can be classified into 4 types, categorizing by the symptoms including1. Anxiety
Anxiety is a common symptom for women with PMS, caused by a hormone imbalance between estrogen and progesterone(1). Most women with PMS is found to have a very high level of estrogen and low levels of progesterone(4) before menstruation.


Withdrawal from chronic exposure to the female sex steroid progesterone (P) may also contribute to the occurrence of PMS anxiety(2).

2. Craving
Some women with PMS may experience the symptom of food craving, caused by an abnormal liver function in carbohydrate synthesis due to dietary habits(6) and abnormal levels of serotonin(10)(8).
Other theories suggest that when a woman under stress before period, she may grasp for everything which makes her feel more comfortable(7).

3. Hyperhydration(11)
Breast tenderness and water retention(12) are always a problem for some women with PMS. Breast tenderness is caused by overproduction of prolactin due to the abnormal function of the pituitary gland(13). Water retention is either caused by overproduction of prolactin-induced renal sodium and potassium excretion(16) or abnormal function of lymphatic function(14)(15).

4. Depression
Researchers found that women with the symptom of depression always have unbalanced levels of estrogen(3) and progesterone as a result of liver abnormal function in fat and protein metabolism(5). This unbalance also induces nervous tension, that causes nervous disorder including depression(3).

Conventionally, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), diuretics and hormonal contraceptives. are the most common medicine used for the treatment of PMS, depending on the types of symptom.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), evaluated the effects of ginger on the severity of symptoms of PMS.


The clinical trial, double-blinded work, included 70 participants were randomly allocated to intervention (n = 35) and control (n = 35) groups. All persons suffering from PMS were asked to complete the daily record scale questionnaire for two consecutive cycles before treatment.

According to the returned questionnaire, there were no significant differences between the mean scores of PMS symptoms in the two groups before intervention.

Each participant received two ginger capsules daily from seven days before menstruation to three days after menstruation for three cycles and they recorded the severity of the symptoms by daily record scale in the questionnaire.

By comparing the date 1, 2, and 3 months after intervention, the ginger treatment group showed a significant improvement of the PMS symptoms compared to control.

Dr. Khayat S, and colleagues wrote in the final report, "Based on the results of this study, maybe ginger is effective in the reduction of severity of mood and physical and behavioral symptoms of PMS and we suggest ginger as a treatment for PMS".

Take all together, ginger may be considered a functional alternative for the treatment of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.
