Allergy, also known as an allergic disease is a group of conditions including include hay fever, food allergies, atopic dermatitis, allergic asthma, and anaphylaxis caused by the overreaction of the immune system response to harmless substances in the environment.
Most common symptoms of allergies are sneezing and runny nose, persistent coughing, skin rash, fatigue, gastrointestinal discomforts, headache, and fever.
In serious cases, people affected by allergies may also experience symptoms of shortness of breath.
Believe it or not, food allergies affect 4-6% of children and 4% of adults epidemiologically. According to the statistics, approximately, 32 million Americans have food allergies, including 5.6 million children under age 18.
Also, every year, in the U.S., 200,000 people require emergency medical care for allergic reactions to food.
There are many risk factors associated with the onset of allergies. However, foods, medications and insect stings are the most common triggers of anaphylaxis, a life threating condition.
People who have asthma, a family history of asthma and allergies and are under 18 years of age are most at risk to develop an allergy and allergic complication.
Treatment of allergies is totally depending on the severity and types of the syndrome. Over-the-counter remedies such as antihistamines which block the effects of histamine, and decongestants and nasal steroid sprays may reduce symptoms in patients with the mild condition.
In a severe case, due to the condition have interfered with the quality of life of the patients, more options may be needed including allergy shots (immunotherapy), please check with your doctors
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
With an aim to find a natural ingredient against allergic symptoms, researchers examined the effects of Bromelain (sBr), a mixture of cysteine proteases from pineapple in the incidence of atopic conditions.
The study included C57BL/6J mice sensitized with OVA/alum and challenged with 7 days OVA aerosol following by the sBr 6 mg/kg/0.5 ml or PBS vehicle administered throughout sensitization.
According to the tested assays, throughout the study, sBr treatment throughout OVA-alum sensitization significantly reduced the development of AAD (BAL eosinophils and lymphocytes).
In other words, sBr prevents the expression of allergic symptoms induced by OVA-specific IgE and OVA TET(+) cells by modulating the immune functioning.
In vitro, treatment of sBr significantly reduced CD44, a key receptor involved in lymphocyte infiltration of inflamed tissue in the initiation of the development of airway inflammation in a murine model of allergic asthma.
The results strongly suggested that sBr's processes anti-inflammatory and antiallergic properties.
Based on the findings, Dr. Secor ER Jr, the lead scientist said, "sBr was shown to reduce allergic sensitization and the generation of AAD upon antigen challenge".
Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of allergy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Ginger Protects the Joints Against Osteoarthritis In Human Trials
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a form of arthritis, found in the general term of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) characterized by the wear and tear on joints.
The chronic and medical condition affects over 25 million people in the United States alone.
The characteristics of osteoarthritis are aching pain, stiffness, or difficulty of moving the joint or joints. Therefore one must understand the differences in prevalence and incidence estimates of osteoarthritis (OA), compared to other types of arthritis.
Furthermore, the pain usually gets worse ina change of weather, at night and in the advanced diseases, and the pain can occur even at rest.
If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, please make sure that you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of osteoarthritis
Conventionally, management of osteoarthritis (OA) focuses on pain relief and improves physical function through pharmacological, nonpharmacological, and surgical treatments if it is necessary.
If you are currently taking some of the medications for the treatment of osteoarthritis, please make sure you know all the side effect for preventive measure.
Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of osteoarthritis, some researchers suggested that the increase in age is one of the disease prevalent factor found in the aging population.
Dr. Richard F. Loeser, said, "Basic aging studies in non-articular cells suggest that cell stress or cell damage response contributes to chronic inflammation that promotes age-related diseases. This cellular response results in the senescence-associated secretory phenotype which has many of the characteristics of an OA chondrocyte in terms of the cytokines, chemokines, and proteases produced".
And, "Because OA occurs in older adults who also have age-related changes in muscle, bone, fat, and the nervous system, it is likely that a more general and systemic approach will be needed to better understand the link between aging and OA".
The result strongly indicated the increased risk of osteoarthritis in the elderly.
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.
The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.
Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of osteoarthritis assessed the clinical efficacy and safety of oral ginger for the symptomatic treatment of osteoarthritis (OA).
The study included 68 participants with osteoarthritis were randomly assigned evenly to receive standard treatment with or without self-knee massage with ginger oil twice a week.
At the end of the first and fifth week, participants in both groups were assessed regarding pain and functional state.
According to the assessed results, the mean Visual Analog Scale (VAS) Pain scores of the intervention group were significantly lower at the end of the first and fifth weeks compared to control.
Furthermore, the mean total scores and mean Function subscale scores of the functionality in activities of daily living with the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) were significantly lower in the intervention group in the first- and fifth-week assessments, also compared to control.
The results strongly suggested that self-massage of the knee with ginger oil should be used combined with standard medical treatment for osteoarthritis patients.
Based on the findings, Dr.Tosun B, the lead scientist said, "Nurses can easily train patients and their caregivers on knee massage, and the intervention can be implemented by patients at home without any restrictions on location".
In order to reveal more information about the ginger effect on osteoarthritis, researchers launched a systematic literature search followed by meta-analyses on selected studies, including randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing oral ginger treatment with placebo in OA patients aged >18 years.
According to the Hedges' standardized mean difference (SMD), and safety by risk ratio (RR), out of 122 retrieved references, 117 were discarded, leaving five trials (593 patients) for meta-analyses.
Ginger intake showed a statistically significant pain reduction with a low degree of inconsistency among trials.
Quality of life from the selected trials also statistically and significantly improved in favor of the ginger group.
Interestingly, patients given ginger were more than twice as likely to discontinue treatment compared to placebo.
The results exerted a similar efficacy as seen in the aforementioned study.
Take all together, ginger may be used alone or combined primary therapy for the treatment of osteoarthritis, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Regular Walking Reduces Risk of Insulin Resistance Significantly
Insulin resistance (IR), one of metabolic syndrome, is a condition of failure of cellular normal response to the hormone insulin. Patients with insulin resistance are found to have a significant risk to develop type 2 diabetes(1)(2)(3) and Heart diseases(3).
Regular physical activity has long been found to associate with the prevention of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic diseases, but regular walking contribution of reduced risk of Insulin Resistance in the younger and older elderly have been lacking, probably due to the effectiveness of modern restrict diet(4) and psychological therapies(5) in syndrome controlling.
Recent study conducted by the Klinika za endokrinologiju, showed that 10 sessions--35 min session of walking on treadmill, intensity 60.8 +/- 5.7% (VO2)max, frequency 5 times a week), had had significant influence on the increased aerobic capacity and insulin sensitivity in the tested patients(7), as well as enhanced suppression of hepatic glucose production(8).
In the review of data of 278,989 people (111,524 males and 167,465 females) living in Chiba Prefecture who underwent consecutive medical check-ups in 2008 and 2009, Dr. Ashizawa E and colleagues at the Chiba Prefectural Institute of Public Health said, "In men, the odds of developing MetS were significantly lower for participants who exercised regularly ("walking fast," OR=0.88, 95% CI [0.83-0.93]; and "higher physical activity," 0.85, [0.80-0.90])"(6).
Brisk walking, a popular and readily attainable form of moderate intensity physical activity, is one of the best to suitable for the majority of individuals to improve metabolic syndrome (MetS) risk factors in overweight male subjects, according to the study by University of Tsukuba(10).
Indeed, reductions in walking reduce insulin sensitivity and insulin signaling through multiple cellular processes in glucose metabolism(9) of that induced risk of Insulin Resistance in the progression of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

Phytchoemical Alliin Gobbles Up Cancer Cells in Vivo with No Side Effects
Cancer is a class of disease caused by irregular cell growth in the tissue or organ associated with the alternation of cell DNA.
Most cancers at the early stage, due to the small size of the tumor are asymptomatic, However, as the cells continue to proliferation, at some points, the tumor may affect the nearby blood vessels and nerve cell leading to symptoms of severe pain and bleeding accompanied by the general symptoms shared by all cancers.
Most primary cancers at the advanced stage can also travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissues, leading to a secondary metastasis.
According to the statistics provided by the National Cancer Institute, based on 2011–2015 statistics. approximately, 439.2 per 100,000 men and women per year are diagnosed with cancer. The number of cancer deaths is 163.5 per 100,000 men and women per year, also based on 2011–2015 statistics.
Cancers are classified depending on the types of cells alternation
* Carcinoma
Carcinoma is a malignant tumor found in anywhere of epithelial tissues lining the cavities, surfaces of structures and glands.
* Sarcoma
Sarcoma is a type of cancer that arises from malignantly connective tissue cells originated from embryonic germ cells or bone, cartilage, and fat tissues and cells.
* Lymphoma and leukemia
Hematopoietic cells are multipotent stem cells that give rise to all types of the blood cell, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets become cancerous.
* Germ cell tumor
The cancer is derived from pluripotent cells. In adults, these are most often found in the testicle and ovary, However, the cancer is more common in babies and young children.
* Blastoma
The cancer is derived from immature "precursor" or embryonic tissue. These are also most common in children.
Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.
With an aim to find a potential treatment of cancer with no side effect, researchers examined the protective effect of three garlic powder compared to that alliin.
Rat selected to the study were administered for 2 weeks with 5% garlic powder diet.
According to the comet assay, consumption of the different garlic powders induced a 35-60% reduction in DNA damage induced by N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) in rat liver.
Compared to the other garlic powders increased alliin content of the garlic powder was associated strongly with a proportional decrease in NDMA induced DNA alteration.
In other words, alliin increased anti-liver cancer activity of garlic powder proportionally compared to normal garlic powders.
Interestingly, DNA damage induced by aflatoxin B1 in the liver or by 1,2-dimethylhydrazine in the colon were also decreased strongly by the three garlic powders but these decreases were not correlated to the alliin content of the garlic powder.
In other words, all phytochemical compounds found in the garlic powder must work together to augment the anti-cancer effect regardless of the content of the individual compound.
In the study of liver cancer induced by injections of 0.025 mg/kg body weight aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in rats, researchers garlic powder decreased the appearance and size of hepatic GST-P foci associated with early markers of the liver cancer.
However, garlic containing the highest level of alliin showed a stronger effect in the protection of liver against the forming hepatic GST-P foci compared to the normal garlic powders.
Levels of alliin showed an inverse associated with the number and area of preneoplastic foci.
Garlic powder ingestion increased the activity of hepatic detoxified enzymes such as glutathione S-transferase and UDP glucuronosyltransferase with no modification of nifedipine oxidase activity.
Dr. Bergès R, the lead researchers said, "It is suggested that garlic partly exerts its anticarcinogenic effects through increasing enzymes involved in AFB1 detoxification. This study highlights the possibility of controlling the cultivation conditions to improve the chemopreventive efficacy of garlic".
Taken altogether, alliin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of cancer with no side effect, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of alliin in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

* Carcinoma
Carcinoma is a malignant tumor found in anywhere of epithelial tissues lining the cavities, surfaces of structures and glands.
* Sarcoma
Sarcoma is a type of cancer that arises from malignantly connective tissue cells originated from embryonic germ cells or bone, cartilage, and fat tissues and cells.
* Lymphoma and leukemia
Hematopoietic cells are multipotent stem cells that give rise to all types of the blood cell, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets become cancerous.
* Germ cell tumor
The cancer is derived from pluripotent cells. In adults, these are most often found in the testicle and ovary, However, the cancer is more common in babies and young children.
* Blastoma

Whole Food Ginger, an Antibiotic Alternative with No Side Effects, Scientists Say
Infectious diseases are a medical condition caused by pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, parasites or fungi.
Most cases of infectious diseases are contagious by spreading directly or indirectly, from one person to another.
In other words, if you kiss, or are coughed or sneezed on by an infectious person, you are at risk of developing the same infectious disease.
According to the statistic provided by the World Health Organization, 3 infectious diseases were ranked in the top ten causes of death worldwide in 2016.
More precisely, lower respiratory infections, diarrheal diseases, and tuberculosis induced 3.0 million, 1.4 million, and 1.3 million deaths, respectively.
Conventionally, most cases of infectious diseases except those caused by viruses are treated by antibiotics.
If you are currently taking one of the antibiotics for the treatment of infectious diseases, please make sure you know all the side effects for preventive measure.
Diagnosis of the type of bacteria that causes the disease in most cases is important for precisive targeting.
Researchers on finding a natural compound as the antibiotic alternative for the treatment of infectious diseases with no side effects evaluated the antibacterial properties of Allium sativum (garlic) cloves and Zingiber officinale (ginger) rhizomes against multi-drug resistant clinical pathogens causing nosocomial infection.
The study included two crude garlic cloves and ginger rhizomes with 95% (v/v) ethanol tested against five gram-negative and two-gram positive multi-drug resistant bacterial isolates.
Application of the extracts showed significant inhibition against all tested isolates.
The highest inhibition zone of garlic (19.45 mm) was found in the Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa), with the minimal inhibitory concentration as low as 67.00 µg/mL.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote in the final report, "Natural spices of garlic and ginger possess effective anti-bacterial activity against multi-drug clinical pathogens and can be used for prevention of drug-resistant microbial diseases and further evaluation is necessary".
Additionally, in order to know more information about the ginger antibacterial property, researchers also examined the antimicrobial potency of fresh, natural and commercial dried Allium sativum and Zingiber officinale extracts against seven local clinical bacterial isolates such as Escherichia coli.
Compared to garlic extract, chloroform and diethyl ether extracts of Z. officinale showed a greater zone of inhibition of tested pathogens except for P. aeruginosa and E. coli.
Furthermore, all extracts of A. sativum and Z. officinale have a strong antibacterial effect compared to recommended standard antibiotics through activity index.
The efficacy of ginger against bacterial infectious diseases was attributed to the presence of various phytochemicals such as tannins, phenols, alkaloids, steroids, and saponins.
Dr. the lead scientist said, "These findings provide new insights to use A. sativum and Z. officinale as potential plant sources for controlling pathogenic bacteria and potentially considered as cost-effective in the management of diseases and to the threat of drug resistance phenomenon".
Take all together, ginger processed a high amount of bioactive compounds may be considered an antibiotic alternative for prevention and treatment of bacterial infectious diseases, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Regular Walking Reduced Risk of Early Onset, Progression and Symptoms of Alzheimer's disease
Regular physical activity has long been found to associate with the prevention of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic diseases, but regular walking contribution of reduced risk and progression of Alzheimer's disease in the younger and older elderly patient have been lacking, probably due to in reversibility in disease controlling(1) and in most cases in older adults(2).
Alzheimer's destroys brain cells, causing problems with memory, thinking, and behavior severe enough to affect language communication, memory, lifelong hobbies or social life. Alzheimer's gets worse over time, and it is fatal, due to the progression of the formation of plaques and tangles.
Strengthening the immune system fights against inflammation, reduce high blood pressure, lower cholesterol levels and a healthy diet will help to prevent Alzheimer's disease(3).
A new study conducted by the São Paulo State University, multimodal exercise, including walking intervention on frontal cognitive functions and kinematic gait parameters may be effective to prevent the progression in patients with Alzheimer's disease(4).
According to a study of the performance of exercise program such as walking, of 134 ambulatory patients with mild to severe AD, significantly improved ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs), physical performance, and nutritional and decreasing behavioral disturbance and depression in patients(5).
In support of regular walking in improvement of cognitive and physical function in AD patients, Dr. Vreugdenhil A and colleagues at the University of Tasmania, said, " participation in a community-based exercise program can improve cognitive and physical function and independence in ADL in people with Alzheimer's disease,.... under the supervision of their carer.(6),
In fact, regular walking in elderly exercise program also showed to slow the rate of functional deterioration in mild AD and reduce falls and disease progression(8) in patients suffering from advanced AD(7), a major concern of caregivers, through the improvement of balance performance(8).
Dr. Ryan SM and colleagues in the study of examined exercise-mediated effects on AD pathology, cognitive function, hippocampal neurogenesis and neuroinflammation in transgenic mouse models of AD, concluded, "exercise presents a promising non-pharmacological option to potentially delay the onset of or slow down the progression of AD"(9) through " induced effects on hippocampal neurogenesis, cognitive function and neuroinflammation, and consider exercise as a potential pro-neurogenic and anti-inflammatory intervention for cognition"(10)
Some researches suggested that the effectiveness of exercise in delay the onset of or slow down the progression of AD by preventing amyloid-β (Aβ) load, probably are the results of exercise-induced protection against AD-related mitochondrial dysfunction and phenotypic deterioration(11).

Regular Walking, Improves symptoms, QOL and reduces psychological stress on patients with Crohn's disease
Regular physical activity has long been found to associate to the prevention of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic diseases but guidelines to support an older adult in engagement in regular physical activity (PA) to improve patients with Crohn's disease are lacking.
Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) affecting any part of the gastrointestinal tract from mouth to anus, as a result of adipocytokines and macrophage mediators in the perpetuated intestinal inflammatory process(4).
According to the University of Manitoba, regular walking may improve patients with Crohn's disease psychologically and physically without adversely affect disease activity(1).
In twelve subjects completed the 12-wk exercise program, all subjects showed statistically significant improvements after walking an average of 2.9 sessions/wk, at an average of 32.6 min/session, and for an average distance of 3.5 km/session(1).
Indeed, a low-intensity walking program from the University of Western Ontario also suggested that patients with Crohn's disease not only show improvement of quality of life without exacerbation in disease symptoms(2).
In a review also by the university of Western Ontario, although current pharmaceutical treatments are effective in controlling symptoms, patients continue to experience a reduced quality of life (QOL). CD patients engaged in physical activity. Exercise can benefit in decreased CD activity, reduced psychological stress and improved QOL(3).
In fact, regular walking enhance skeletal muscles in releasing biologically active myokines, exerting the direct anti-inflammatory effects and inhibiting the release of proinflammatory mediators from visceral fat of that showed to improve symptoms of Crohn's disease (CD)(4).
