Bromelain Modulates Your Immune System Against Allergic Symptoms

Allergy, also known as an allergic disease is a group of conditions including include hay fever, food allergies, atopic dermatitis, allergic asthma, and anaphylaxis caused by the overreaction of the immune system response to harmless substances in the environment.

Most common symptoms of allergies are sneezing and runny nose, persistent coughing, skin rash, fatigue, gastrointestinal discomforts, headache, and fever.

In serious cases, people affected by allergies may also experience symptoms of shortness of breath.

Believe it or not, food allergies affect 4-6% of children and 4% of adults epidemiologically. According to the statistics, approximately, 32 million Americans have food allergies, including 5.6 million children under age 18.

Also, every year, in the U.S., 200,000 people require emergency medical care for allergic reactions to food.

There are many risk factors associated with the onset of allergies. However, foods, medications and insect stings are the most common triggers of anaphylaxis, a life threating condition.

People who have asthma, a family history of asthma and allergies and are under 18 years of age are most at risk to develop an allergy and allergic complication.

Treatment of allergies is totally depending on the severity and types of the syndrome. Over-the-counter remedies such as antihistamines which block the effects of histamine, and decongestants and nasal steroid sprays may reduce symptoms in patients with the mild condition.

In a severe case, due to the condition have interfered with the quality of life of the patients, more options may be needed including allergy shots (immunotherapy), please check with your doctors

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient against allergic symptoms, researchers examined the effects of Bromelain (sBr), a mixture of cysteine proteases from pineapple in the incidence of atopic conditions.

The study included C57BL/6J mice sensitized with OVA/alum and challenged with 7 days OVA aerosol following by the sBr 6 mg/kg/0.5 ml or PBS vehicle administered throughout sensitization.

According to the tested assays, throughout the study, sBr treatment throughout OVA-alum sensitization significantly reduced the development of AAD (BAL eosinophils and lymphocytes).

In other words, sBr prevents the expression of allergic symptoms induced by OVA-specific IgE and OVA TET(+) cells by modulating the immune functioning.

In vitro, treatment of sBr significantly reduced CD44, a key receptor involved in lymphocyte infiltration of inflamed tissue in the initiation of the development of airway inflammation in a murine model of allergic asthma.

The results strongly suggested that sBr's processes anti-inflammatory and antiallergic properties.

Based on the findings, Dr. Secor ER Jr, the lead scientist said, "sBr was shown to reduce allergic sensitization and the generation of AAD upon antigen challenge".

Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of allergy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
