Scientists may have found a herbal plant for the treatment of skin diseases with no side effects, according to studies.
Skin diseases are conditions of skin damage and classified according to each pathogenic cause.
Most cases of skin disease are involved in allergens, irritants. However certain medical conditions such as irritable bowel disease, autoimmune diseases, and genetic preposition can also cause r skin diseases.
Recent studies suggested that a poor diet is also associated with the onset of skin diseases such as the dermatological disease may be linked to systemic disease, and dietary changes may affect health outcomes, as in psoriasis.
Dr. Rajani Katta and colleagues in the dermatological disease team at the Baylor College of Medicine said, " In this review, the authors focus on conditions for which the role of diet has traditionally been an underappreciated aspect of therapy".
"In some cases, dietary interventions may influence the course of the skin disease, as in acne. In others, dietary change may serve as one aspect of prevention, such as in skin cancer and aging of the skin"
" In others, Lastly, systemic medications prescribed for dermatological diseases, such as steroids, are known to raise the risk of other diseases, and dietary change may reduce this risk".
These results clearly suggested that reducing intake of pro-inflammatory food such as fried and process foods and red meats and increasing certain anti-inflammatory foods such as tuna, salmon, garlic into your diet can be helpful in reducing the risk and treatment of skin diseases.
Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan.
It has become very popular for commercial cultivation due to its health benefits. Aloe vera has been used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of diseases, including wound, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes, and elevated cholesterol, etc.
The herbal plant is also one of many popular herbs studied in scientific ways with some conflicting results.
The ten main areas of chemical constituents of Aloe vera include amino acids, anthraquinones, enzymes, minerals, vitamins, lignins, monosaccharide, polysaccharides, salicylic acid, saponins, and sterols.
With an aim to find a natural ingredient or remedy for the treatment of skin diseases, researchers at examined all dermatology-oriented in vitro and in vivo experiments and clinical trials on aloe vera preparations.
According to the 40 studies selected for the investigation, oral administration of aloe vera in mice is effective on wound healing in inducing the decrease of the number and size of papillomas.
Furthermore, injection of Aloe vera also exhibited anti-tumor and parasitic effects in reducing the incidence of tumors and leishmania parasitemia by >90% in the liver, spleen, and bone marrow.
The herbal medicine was found to exerted certain skin protective effects against psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, frostbite, burn, wound healing and inflammation.
Moreover, the topical gel from Aloe vera can be considered a biological vehicle and an anti-microbial and antifungal agent against skin infection and inflammation.
However, contrary to general belief, the topical application of aloe vera was not effective in the prevention of radiation-induced injuries and sunburn or suntan protection.
The results firmly suggested that Aloe vera showed some promising results for diverse dermatologic conditions.
Taken altogether, herbal Aloe vera may be used as a topical or oral administration agent for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of skin diseases, pending to the reconfirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Alfalfa, the Anti-inflammatory Natural Whole Food
Alfalfa is a flowering plant in the genus Medicago, belonging to the family Fabaceae, cultivated all over the world as hay for cattle feeding, and used in traditional medicine over thousands of year to treat high cholesterol, asthma, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, enhanced digestive system, bleeding disorder, kidney, and urinary tract infection, etc.
North American aboriginals have used Alfalfa seed as food in making bread and mush.
Inflammation is the natural response of the immune system in regulated the production of white blood cells for protection against foreign organisms.
Alfalfa expressed significant anti-inflammatory effect through inhibited production of proinflammatory cytokines during injure, foreign invasion and free radical domino's action, etc....
According to the University of Maryland, a novel pectic polysaccharide from alfalfa(Medicago sativa L.) stem, showed significant anti-inflammatory effect against mRNA expressions of the pro-inflammatory cytokine genes, especially for IL-1β antibody.
The chloroform extract of alfalfa aerial part also is found to inhibit the function of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of Gram-negative bacteria in stimulating the immune responses in induced inflammation and suppressed LPS-mediated activation of the extracellular signal-regulated the proinflammatory and prothrombotic responses of nuclear factor kappa-B pathway.
The cinnamic acid derivatives and fatty acids active constituents of the extract have also been found to be effective in ameliorated inflammation and immune response through inhibition of nitric oxide (NO), tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) all involved in the development of inflammatory diseases.
Taking together, Alfalfa no doubt has processed anti-inflammatory effects by inhibited free radicals, proinflammatory cytokines and hormones involved the development of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.

Herbal Andrographis, the Potential Anti-inflammation and Infection Functional Remedy
Scientists may have found a herbal plant for the treatment of inflammatory diseases with no side effects, according to the studies.
Inflammation is a natural reaction of the immune system's self-protection to remove harmful stimuli, including damaged cells, irritants, pathogens... from our body.
Acute inflammatory inflammation is a result of the over-response of the immune system after sensing the injury or damage of the body through activating the protein associated with the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
The aim of the proinflammatory cytokines is to kill the invasive pathogens, which try to enter the body through the wound.
The immune system in the stimulating production of proinflammatory cytokines may induce overproduction of these cytokines can cause death or damage to the nearby cells, leading to scar formation and symptoms of localized swelling, redness and fever.
Chronic inflammation is a serious condition caused by the immune system to adapt to the new change due to its inability to kill all the invasion within a set of times.
Some researchers in the observation of the history of immune evolution suggested that immune system also try to adapt to the new environment such as chronic inflammation if, for whatever reasons, it can not fill all invasive pathogens within 3 to weeks, leading to the development of several diseases and conditions, including some cancers and rheumatoid arthritis.
Furthermore, chronic inflammation can also be caused by the autoimmune disorder, which involves your immune system mistakenly attacking healthy tissue, long-term exposure to irritants, such as industrial chemicals or polluted air.
Dr. Anne M. Minihane, the lead scientist in the study "Low-grade inflammation, diet composition, and health: current research evidence and its translation" wrote, "An unresolved inflammatory response is likely to be involved from the early stages of disease development" and " The latest research in the areas of acute and chronic inflammation and cardiometabolic, gut and cognitive health is presented along with the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying inflammation–health/disease associations".
And. " Such approaches are likely to provide a more discriminating means of quantifying inflammation–health/disease associations, and the ability of diet to positively modulate inflammation and provide the much-needed evidence to develop research portfolios that will inform new product development and associated health claims".
The results clearly suggested that adding certain amounts of anti-inflammatory foods into your diet may be the best way to prevent chronic inflammatory diseases.
Andrographis paniculata is also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka. It has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia, swollen lymph nodes, leprosy, bronchitis, sore throats, tuberculosis, chickenpox, etc.
Besides the main ingredient andrographolides, giving the plant a bitter taste, other ingredients includediterpene lactones, such as neoandrographolide, andrographiside, 14-doexy-11, 12-didehydro andrographolide, etc., flavonoinds viz., oroxylin, wogonin, andrographidines A, B, C, D, E, F.
With an aim to reaffirm the traditional use of Andrographis paniculata for treatment of infection and inflammation, researchers examined the effects of Andrograpanin, one of the diterpene lactones in A. paniculata in vivo and in vitro.
Application of Andrograpanin inhibited the NO and other 3 pro-inflammatory cytokines in a range from 5-90 microM in a dose-dependent manner.
The efficacy of anti-inflammatory activity of Andrograpanin was associated with the reduction of the expression of iNOS, enzymes in catalyzing the production of NO and pro-inflammatory cytokines gene (proteins) expression.
Furthermore, the anti-inflammatory effects were contributed by inhibiting the protein (p38) and (mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPKs)) which are responsive to stress stimuli, p38 and stress response.
Dr. Liu J, after taking into account co and confounders wrote, "andrograpanin might be useful as a potential anti-inflammatory leading compound for inflammatory drug development".
Additional analysis of other major compound isolated from herbal Andrographis, researchers looked into Human β-defensin-2 (hBD-2), an inducible antimicrobial peptide that plays an important role in innate immunity.
As a prediction, according to the PCR and Western blot assays, injection of Andro (1.0-10 µmol/L) exhibits the expression of hBD-2 in a dose-dependent manner.
However, under the expression of SB203580 (an inhibitor of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38 MAPK)), MG-132 (an inhibitor of nuclear factor κB (NF-κB)), and an NF-κB activator inhibitor, but not by an inhibitor of ERK (PD98059) or by an inhibitor of JNK(SP600125), the effects of hBD-2 mRNA and protein expression in responsive to andro were attenuated.
These results clearly suggested andro exert its antimicrobial effects by exhibiting the expression of hBD-2 through regulating the functions of the innate immune response against stress and stimuli.
Taken altogether, herbal Andrographis processed high levels of bioactive compounds may be considered a functional remedy against inflammation and infection.

Artichoke, the Anti Hypercholesterolemia Herbal Remedy with No Side Effects, Scientists Find
Scientists may have found a herbal remedy for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia with no side effects, according to studies.
Cholesterol, a waxy substance produced by the liver plays a critical role in making hormones, vitamin D, building a strong cell membrane and digestive fluids. However, overexpression of cholesterol has been found to induce high blood pressure and heart diseases.
Not all cholesterols are bad, high-density lipoprotein, the type of cholesterol which returns the cholesterol back to the liver are constantly keeping the bad cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein) in check.
The healthy ratio of total cholesterol is 4 (LDL)/1 (HDL) or lower.
Hypercholesterolemia is a medical condition of abnormally high cholesterol levels in the blood compared to hyperlipidemia which is considered a syndrome of abnormally elevated levels of any or all lipids or lipoproteins in the blood.
People with high blood cholesterol do not experience any symptom. However, the condition has been found to associate with the increased risk of heart diseases and stroke. particularly, atherosclerosis.
Where atherosclerosis is a disease involved the accumulation of plaque on the arterial wall, leading to arterial blockage in facilitating cardiovascular diseases, depending on the location of the blockage.
Although there are many risk factors associated with the onset of high blood cholesterol, some researchers an unhealthy diet is one of the major risk factors that cause hypercholesterolemia in North America.
Dr. Joan Carles Escola`-Gil, the lead scientist in the evaluation of the Western diet risk of hypercholesterolemia in mice wrote, ". Unlike a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet, the A high–saturated fatty acid– and cholesterol-containing (HFHC) diet increased liver ABCG5/G8 expression. The effect of the HFHC diet on fecal macrophage-derived [3 H]cholesterol excretion was totally blunted in ABCG5/G8-deficient mice".
The results strongly suggested that if you follow the diet rich in high–saturated fatty acid–and cholesterol, your risk of hypercholesterolemia is increased many folds, compared to healthy adults with a traditional diet.
According to medical analysis, hypercholesterolemia is a form of hyperlipidemia, high blood lipids, and hyperlipoproteinemia.
Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.
The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine for as liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.
Scientists on finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia, compared the effects of well-established antiatherosclerotic drug atorvastatin (CAS number 134523-00-5) and commercially available artichoke leaf tincture (ALTINC) in an animal model.
The selected animal in the study was divided into five groups:
* The group I (the control group of rats fed with standard diet during 11 weeks), and the remaining 4 groups of rats (II, III, IV, and V) fed with standard diet during the first week and then with hypercholesterolemic diet during the next 10 weeks.
*The group II of rats were left without treatment, while in the groups III, IV, and V were rats treated per os with atorvastatin (1.15 mg/kg body weight--b.w.), ALTINC (0.1 mL/kg b.w.) and their combination in same doses, respectively, for the last six weeks.
During the experiment, Group IV treated ALTINC exerted a significant effect against the abdominal aorta wall thickness and parameters of oxidative stress induced by a high-fat diet, observed by the oxidative stress markers.
Rat treated with ALTINC also enhanced the production of antioxidant enzymes by the host that was suppressed by the high-fat diet feeding in the inhibition of lipid peroxidation, the condition was found to be associated with patients with hypercholesterolemia.
The results suggested the artichoke leaf tincture is a very potent antioxidant with beneficial effects in the early stages of atherosclerosis by reducing the overexpression cholesterol associated with plaque accumulated on the arterial wall.
In order to know more information about artichoke antihypercholesterolaemic effects, researchers examined the artichoke leaf extract (ALE) in lowering the levels of blood cholesterol.
By searching the databases of the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL, The Cochrane Library) (2012, Issue 5); MEDLINE Ovid (1966 to May Week 2, 2012); EMBASE Ovid (1980 to 2012 Week 19); and CINAHL Ebsco (1982 to May 2012) on 17 May 2012, researchers selected 3 randomised controlled trials (RCTs) for the review./
In the first trial, the total cholesterol level in participants receiving ALE decreased by 4.2% from 7.16 (0.62) mmol/L to 6.86 (0.68) mmol/L after 12 weeks, compared to the increase from 6.90 (0.49) mmol/L to 7.04 (0.61) mmol/L in patients receiving placebo.
In the second trial, ALE reduced total cholesterol levels by 18.5% from 7.74 mmol/L to 6.31 mmol/L after 42 ± 3 days of treatment, whereas placebo reduced cholesterol by 8.6% from 7.69 mmol/L to 7.03 mmol/L.
The third trial stated that ALE significantly reduced blood cholesterol compared with placebo in a subgroup of patients with baseline total cholesterol levels of more than 230 mg/dL.
The review strongly suggested artichoke may process the potential for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia with no side effects.
Taken altogether, artichoke may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of high blood cholesterol, pending to the reconfirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Broccoli Sprout Protects Diabetics Against Diabetic Cardiomyopathy
Diabetes is a medical condition characterized by the failure of the body to utilize the insulin in converting glucose to energy, leading to high levels of glucose in the bloodstream.
Most cases of diabetes are associated with either beta cells of the pancreas died-off or insulin receptor site clogged-up by fat and cholesterol.
Diabetic complications in most cases are caused by long-term unmanaged hyperglycemia, a hallmark of diabetes.
Most common complication of diabetes is associated with the damage of tiny blood vessels that nourish the related organ and tissues, leading to the risk for developing microvascular and macrovascular complications. includes cardiovascular disease.
Diabetic cardiomyopathy is a complication of the heart muscle in people with diabetes, leading to heart failure that causes the reduced function of the heart to circulate blood through the body.
Most common symptoms of diabetic cardiomyopathy are the accumulation of fluid in the lungs or legs.
Dr. Adeghate E, in the examination of the diabetic cardiomyopathy associated with the structural changes in the myocardium of diabetes, wrote, " If left unmanaged, DM can lead to numerous long-term complications including micro- and macro-angiopathy and heart failure (HF)".
And, "Most diabetics usually die as a result of HF resulting from diabetes-induced coronary artery disease and cardiomyopathy. Coronary artery disease and cardiomyopathy are normally preceded by hyperglycemia (HG)".
In other words, management diabetes by preventing the onset of hyperglycemia is the most effective way to reduce the risk of diabetic cardiomyopathy in diabetes.
More precisely, by following a healthy diet to normalize the levels of HbA1c level, accompanied by moderate exercise, the risk of diabetic complications can be manageable.
Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belong to the family Brassicaceae. It has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads is surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.
With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of diabetic cardiomyopathy, researchers examined the effect of broccoli sprout extract in an animal model.
The study included male db/db and age-matched wild-type (WT) mice given sulforaphane (SFN, an Nrf2 activator) and its natural source, broccoli sprout extract (BSE) by gavage every other day for 3 months, including vehicle (0.1 ml/10 g), BSE-low dose (estimated SFN availability at 0.5 mg/kg), BSE-high dose (estimated SFN availability at 1.0 mg/kg), and SFN (0.5 mg/kg).
According to the results of echocardiography and histopathological analysis, both BSE and SFN showed significant prevention of diabetes-induced cardiac dysfunction, hypertrophy, and fibrosis.
Furthermore, BSE, like SFN, significantly exhibited the Nrf2 transcriptional activity associated with protective effect oxidative damage triggered by injury and inflammation.
In other words, stimulating the Nrf2 function of the protein, BSE, and SFN significantly prevented cardiac oxidative damage and inflammation.
Moreover, BSE at high doses exerted the similar effect as those of SFN. particularly, in BSE at a high dose that works synergistically with SFN to prevent DCM.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "BSE could potentially be used as a natural and safe treatment against DCM via Nrf2 activation".
Taken altogether, broccoli sprout processed abundantly SFN may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of diabetic cardiomyopathy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, the Anti Diabetes Functional Remedy
Scientists may have found a medicinal plant for the treatment of diabetes with no side effects, according to the studies.
Diabetes is a medical and chronic condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.
In other words, diabetes is a result of abnormally and chronically high levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood. Insulin resistance is a hallmark of diabetes. The disease is either caused by cells in the pancreas that died off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.
Insulin receptors are areas on the outer part of a cell that allow the cell to bind with insulin in the blood. When the receptors are clogged up, the cell can not take glucose (sugar) from the blood and use it for energy.
Researchers do not know what causes insulin resistance in diabetic patients. However, researchers do know that long-term intake of a poor diet with high saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed food is one of many risk factors associated with clogged up the insulin receptors sites, leading to high blood glucose.
Dr. David Hefner in the concern of the Western diet linked to type 2 diabetes, wrote, "The researchers surveyed 42,000 men over a 12-year period. The men's eating habits were divided into two groups: those who followed a Western diet and those who followed a "prudent" diet with fruit, vegetables, whole grain, fish and poultry. "Over the course of the study ... 1,321 new cases of Type 2 diabetes were diagnosed".
These results clearly suggested that by changing to a healthy diet pattern with high fruits and vegetables and reducing the intake of saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed food, diabetes is preventable.
Arctostaphylos uva-ursi is one of the species of Bearberry, in the genus Arctostaphylos, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to northern North America, Asia, and Europe.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as a diuretic agent and for the treatment of urinary problems, including bladder infections, kidney infection, kidney stones, pelvic pain, etc.
The herbal plant contains arbutin, ursolic acid, tannic acid, gallic acid, some essential oil and resin, hydroquinones tannins, phenolic glycosides, and flavonoids.
On finding a natural formula for the treatment of diabetic symptoms that leads to the investigated 7 plants and a herbal mixture used for the traditional treatment of diabetes in streptozotocin-diabetic mice conducted by the University of Ulster.
In streptozotocin-diabetic mice, the formula was supplied as 6.25% by weight of the diet for 9 days.
The consumption of diets containing bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi), significantly reduced the excessive hunger and abnormally large intake of solids and excessive thirst or excess water drinking associated with streptozotocin diabetes.
However, other herbal plants in the herbal formula such as bayberry (Cinnamomum tamala), meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria), Senna (Cassia occidentalis) and the herbal mixture did not alter these parameters.
Bearberry, mistletoe, and tarragon retarded body weight loss, reduced symptoms of diabetes without significantly altered plasma glucose or insulin concentrations.
The results suggested that only bearberry, goldenseal, mistletoe, and tarragon can counter some of the symptoms of streptozotocin diabetes without affecting glycemic control.
Taken altogether, bearberry (Herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) may be used as a functional remedy for the treatment of some diabetic symptoms, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter in a human study

Herbal Turmeric Improves the Inflammatory Response Against Renal Toxicity
The immunomodulatory effect is a process in which the immune function is modulated to the needs of the body.
The immune system included the thymus and bone marrow, as well as secondary lymphatic tissues including spleen, tonsils, lymph vessels, lymph nodes, adenoids, skin, and liver, is the body's defense against infectious organisms and foreign invaders.
The immune dysfunction can be classified into
* The underactive immune system is also known as the weakened immune system.
* The overactive immune system is also known as autoimmune diseases.
In the acute phase of infection, the immune macrophages, the first line of defense stimulates the production of blood palette to cover the wound or injury and pro-inflammatory cytokines to the site of infection to kill off pathogens before they can enter the body to multiply.
Most cases of infection are stopped at the acute phase, depending on the size and penetration of the wound.
Most common symptoms of acute inflammation occurred with a short period of time such as hours is pain, redness, immobility, swelling, and heat.
Conventionally, depending on the types of acute inflammation, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may be prescribed to alleviate the pain by counteracting an enzyme that contributes to inflammation.
However, if the immune system for whatever reason such as in people with a weakened immune system can not destroy the foreign invaders in the set period of time (3-8 weeks), it will adapt to the new change, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation.
Low-grade inflammation over time has been found to destroy cells and tissues in the affected area or organ, inducing chronic inflammatory disease, including diabetes, arthritis, and cardiovascular disease.
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the modulation of the immune response, researchers examined the metformin and curcumin alone or in combination on nephrotoxicity induced by GM.
According to the tested differentiation,
* Both metformin and curcumin, when used alone, were effectively decreasing GM-induced nephrotoxicity.
* Both drug combination exerted a synergistic effect in ameliorating a GM-induced kidney injury, by expressively improved renal dysfunction.
* Moreover, in a GM treated animal model, metformin and curcumin showed strong protection against oxidative stress by decreasing the activities and expression of various oxidative enzymes.
* The combination also exerted a strong anti-inflammatory response by inhibiting the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in GM intoxicated group of animals.
Based on the findings, researchers said, " combinational treatment of metformin and curcumin might have a synergizing effect and substantial potential against nephrotoxicity".
Taken altogether, turmeric processed a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for controlling the body's immune response, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
