Scientists may have found a kitchen spice that processes a potential for reducing the risk and treatment of breast cancer, some studies suggested.
Breast cancer has emerged recently as the most common cancer that affects one in eight women during their lifetime in the US. The malignantly mammary cancer is characterized by the cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably first in the surface of the breast inner linings either milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma).
However, there are rare cases that breast cancer starts in other areas of the breast.
In 2010, over 250,000 new cases of breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S.
Breast cancer diagnosed in the early was found to have 100% of the 5 years survival rate compared to stage II breast cancer of 93% and stage III breast cancers of 72%.
The exact causes of cell DNA in breast tissue alternation are unknown. However, scientists do know that certain risk factors such as aging, family history, smoking, and dense breast tissue are associated with an increased risk of breast cancer.
Genetic mutation inherited from parents such as BRCA1 and BRCA2, tumor protein 53 or P53 and Ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM) accounts for 5-10 percent of all breast cancer diagnosed every year.
However, inherited mutations that cause breast cancer are rare in the general population.
An unhealthy diet such as the Western diet with high in saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed food and less in fruits and vegetables is also associated with the increased risk of breast cancer.
Dr. Stoll BA, in the assessment of the Western diet, early puberty, and breast cancer risk, explained,
"Both earlier menarche and adult tallness are markers of increased risk to breast cancer. Earlier menarche in the West is usually associated with earlier onset of hyperinsulinemia, and multiple case-control studies report that hyperinsulinemia too is a marker of increased breast cancer risk. Although the Western diet is linked both to earlier menarche and also to earlier hyperinsulinemia, the mechanism involved is not necessarily the same".
In lifestyle aspects, Dr.Harvie M, the lead author at the University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust, said, "Recent expert reports estimate that successful lifestyle changes could prevent 25% to 30% of cases of breast cancer".
Cayenne is also known as Cayenne Pepper, a red, hot chili pepper, belonging to Capsicum annuum, the family Solanaceae, native to subtropical and tropical regions.
The herbal medicine has been used in traditional medicine to increases metabolism, enhance the circulatory system and stomach and the intestinal tract, adjust blood pressure, lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, treat frostbite, muscles, arthritis, rheumatism, low back pain, strains, sprains, bruises, and neuralgia, etc.
In the study to reaffirm the effect of capsaicin as an anti-breast cancer agent, Dr. Dou D at the Wayne State University School of Medicine and Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center, conducted an experiment to test whether capsaicin exhibits the growth arrest and apoptosis in human breast cancer cell lines.
Although there are conflicting reports with regard to the value of hot peppers and their primary active component compound, capsaicin, as an anticancer agent, however, in vitro, breast cell growth inhibition and cell death induction were positively correlated with the capsaicin content of the peppers.
In other words, the effect of capsaicin on breast cancer proliferation and expansion are totally depending on the concentration which facilitates the production of antioxidants in the inhibition of free radical expression.
In MCF-7 cells, capsaicin was found to inhibits the cancer cell growth and induces the cancer cells on the dose-dependent manner and through reducing the levels of reactive oxygen species.
The further analysis also found that treatment of capsaicin also increased the apoptosis-inducing factor translocated into the cytosol and nucleus from the mitochondria and probably involving the pathways of caspase-independent that program breast cancer cell death
Dr. Constantinou C explained, " These pathways (pathways of caspase-independent programmed cell death (CI-PCD))are likely to be acting as 'death backup systems' that ensure effective removal of defective cells from the organism. Similar to classical apoptosis i.e. caspase-dependent programmed cell death (CD-PCD)".
Taken altogether, herbal Cayenne with high amounts of bioactive capsaicin may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer and recurrence breast cancer.
Women with a higher risk of breast cancer may want to add a small portion of chili pepper into their diet for preventive measures.
However, due to the limitation of the above studies, additional data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food or its bioactive compound emodin during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of herbal Cayenne, anti-breast cancer possibilities.

Herbal Chamomile, The Best Functional Herb for the Prevention and Treatment of Insomnia
Scientists may have found herbal medicine to treat insomnia with no side effects, according to the result of some studies.
Insomnia is a sign and symptom of sleep disorder in which a person has difficulty falling asleep and/or staying asleep or sleep of poor quality.
According to the statistic provided by the Sleep Education, insomnia affects millions of people in the US, 30 to 35% have brief symptoms of insomnia, 15 to 20% have a short-term insomnia disorder, which lasts less than three months and 10% have a chronic insomnia disorder, which occurs at least three times per week for at least three months.
And, one in three people suffers from some form of insomnia during their lifetime and women suffer from insomnia more often than men.
There is no single cause of insomnia. Researchers suggested that psychiatric and medical conditions, such as stress and anxiety and chronic illness such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, musculoskeletal disorders, kidney disease, unhealthy sleep habits and long-term use of substances, are associated with some prevalent risk factors of the onset of insomnia.
In other words, anything that causes the disruption of the brain sleep-wake cycle or the brain function to turn on and off the sleep-wake cycle is the risk factor to the syndrome onset.
Long-term use of certain medications can also induce insomnia. The National Jewish Health suggested
antidepressants such as Prozac® and Zoloft, Dopamine agonists and anticonvulsants are some medications that can cause insomnia.
If you are taking one of these medicines and have a sleep problem, please make sure you discuss the problem with your doctors.
Long-term and untreated insomnia may increase the risk of the complication of anxiety, depression and heart failure and daytime trouble concentrating, and mood disturbances
Chamomile is also known as camomile, the common name of many species daisy-like plants in the family Asteraceae.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory constituents and to treat menstrual cramps and sleep disorders, reduce cramping and spastic pain in the bowels, relieve excessive gas and bloating in the intestine, etc.
Chamomile is one of the most popular herbs used for sleep disorders in herbal medicine. According to the Dr. Srivastava JK and research team at the Case Western Reserve University, many different preparations of the herb have been developed, the most popular of which is in the form of herbal tea consumed more than one million cups per day.
In the reaffirming the effect of chamomile used in traditional medicine for the treatment of insomnia, researchers at the University of Michigan launched an investigation to examine the preliminary efficacy and safety of chamomile for improving subjective sleep and daytime symptoms in patients with chronic insomnia.
The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot trial included 34 patients aged 18-65 years with DSM-IV primary insomnia for ≥ 6-months.
Patients were randomized to 270 mg of chamomile twice daily or placebo for 28-days.
There were no significant differences between groups in changes in sleep diary measures, including total sleep time (TST), sleep efficiency, sleep latency, wake after sleep onset (WASO), sleep quality, and a number of awakenings.
Participants received the 270 mg chamomile show modest advantage on daytime functioning compared to placebo.
Intake of chamomile also exerted a moderate effect in sleep latency, nighttime awakenings, and Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS).
There were no differences in adverse events reported by the chamomile group compared to the placebo.
Dr. Zick SM after taking the final assessment said, "Chamomile could provide modest benefits of daytime functioning and mixed benefits on sleep diary measures relative to placebo in adults with chronic primary insomnia".
DR. Wheatley D, in the classification of the medicinal plants for insomnia, once again suggested that chamomile improves the sleep quality of patients with insomnia may be attributed to the herbal medicine anxiolytic or sedative properties.
Taken altogether, chamomile may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and treatment of insomnia.

Better Than Chemo Cisplatin in Inhibited Onset and Gene Expression in Induction of Colon Cancer, According Online Medical Literature
Arnica may have a profound and therapeutic effect in ameliorated risk and treatment of colon cancer, some scientists suggested.
The results of the investigation were carried out by some respectable institutes, including the University of São Paulo and the University of Münster, and published on online medical literature.
Colon cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth irregularly and uncontrollably in the colon tissue. At the later stage, the cancerous cells may travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissue.
Arnica is a herbaceous species, genus perennial, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia, used in herbal medicine for centuries to treat strains, sprains, and bruises.
Wound healing is a process of repairing after the damage of the skin, tissues, organs, etc.
In the study to reconfirm the use of the technique in detecting the early stage of colon cancer through examining the expression of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and colon-rectal mucosal epithelial cell proliferation researchers at the University of São Paulo conducted an experiment of 50 male Wistar rats randomly divided into 5 groups, as indicated below
* Groups G1 to G4 was given 4 injections of the carcinogen 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH)
* The G2 group received Lychnophora ericoides (LE) extracts for 6 wk.
* The groups G3 and G4 received LE for 4 wk and 2 wk, respectively, at the postinitiation and initiation phases of colonic carcinogenesis. The group G5 was the control.
Observation at the 42th day after the first injections of DMH for the neoplasia induction found that Arnica treatment group (LE), including G2, 3 and 4 demonstrated a statistically significant decrease in the number of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and a reduction of cell proliferation induced by DMH.
These indications suggested that Arnica consisted of a protective influence on the process of colon carcinogenesis, through suppressing both the initiation and the promotion of colonic carcinogenesis.
Furthermore, in the reexamine the cytotoxic activity of phytochemical compound isolated from Arnica, against COLO 320, a human colorectal cancer cell line using the microculture tetrazolium (MTT) assay, researchers found that isolated flavonoids showed moderate to low cytotoxicity, in compared to the reference compound cisplatin at 2.9 microM.
Cisplatin is a conventional chemo medication used to treat a number of cancers.
In 2 hours of injection, sesquiterpene lactones, helenalin at dose of 1.0 microM, possessing both the reactive alpha-methylene-gamma-lactone moiety and a reactive alpha,beta-unsubstituted cyclopentenone ring, displayed the strongest cytotoxicity against the tested colon cell line in compared to other compounds.
In compared to tested GLC4, a human small cell lung carcinoma cell line, COLO 320 was more sensitive to many flavonoids (especially for flavones) but more resistant to the cytotoxic effect of the sesquiterpene lactones.
Interestingly, in the evaluation of Arnica effect in deregulation of c-myb expression involved in the development of human tumors, especially certain types of leukemia and breast and colon cancer, researchers indicated that application of sesquiterpene lactones isolated from Arnica suppress Myb-dependent gene expression with potential anti-colon cancer activity with the IC50 values were in a range between 0.7 and >30 μM.
C-myb is a member of the terminal domain with function in regulated the expression of hematopoiesis, cell proliferation, and differentiation in tumorigenesis.
In compared to other isolated bioactive compounds, furanoheliangolide goyazensolide and the pseudoguaianolide helenalin acetate with IC50 = 0.6 and 0.7 μM, respectively, represented the most active inhibitors of c-Myb dependent gene expression.
Observed by the control measurements for cell viability (MTS assay), researchers also found that c-Myb dependent gene expression is not a function of cytotoxicity/unspecific cell damage.
All these results indicated that Arnica processed a significant effect in prevented early-onset, progression and treatment of colon cancer through it bioactive compounds in the inhibited onset of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and colon-rectal mucosal epithelial cell and colon cancer cells proliferation and gene expression in the risk of colon cancer.

Herbal Andrographis, the Natural Anti-fertility Functional Remedy with No Side Effects
Scientists may have found a natural contraceptive for the prevention of conception, according to studies.
Anti-fertility is an act with the intention to prevent, reduce or destroy fertility by using substances such as contraceptives, herbal medicine in under-developing the world.
Contraceptives are a conventional medicine which allows you to enjoy sex without the risk of getting pregnant. The contraceptive pill is the most common contraceptive agent used in the Western world.
Many women also use a contraceptive pill for the treatment of irregular menstruation, painful or heavy periods, endometriosis, acne, and premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
Most common side effects of the contraceptive pill include gastrointestinal discomforts, intermenstrual spotting, breast tenderness, headaches, and migraine, mood changes, missed periods and vaginal discharge.
Some women using the pill also experience symptoms of decreased libido.
Dr. Davis AR, the lead scientist in the examination of the effect of OCs on sexual functioning, wrote, " in 30 original research studies. In the retrospective, uncontrolled studies (n = 17), it was found that most women reported an increase in libido during OC use. In the uncontrolled, prospective studies (n = 4), it was found that most women reported little change in libido during OC use. In the perspective and cross-sectional controlled studies (n = 4), women using OCs reported both increased and decreased libido compared to non-OC user". and " In the most recent and well-conducted trial, a decrease in libido in OC users compared to placebo users was found".
These results strongly suggested that women may react differently to the use of the contraceptive pill, probably due to the based hormones in the body.
Andrographis paniculata is also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka.
The herbal plant has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia, swollen lymph nodes, leprosy, bronchitis, sore throats, tuberculosis, chicken pox, etc.
Besides the main ingredient andrographolides, giving the plant a bitter taste, other ingredients of herbal Andrographis include diterpene lactones, such as neoandrographolide, andrographiside, 14-doexy-11, 12-didehydro andrographolide, etc., flavonoinds viz., oroxylin, wogonin, andrographidines A, B, C, D, E, F.
With an aim to find a natural ingredient with less cost and no side effect for males contraception, researchers at the Jamal Mohamed College examined the anti-fertility of dry leaf powder of A. paniculata in an animal model.
Dry leaf powder of A. paniculata fed orally to male albino rats, at a dose level of 20 mg powder per day for 60 days showed a significant effect on cessation of spermatogenesis, degenerative changes in the seminiferous tubules, regression of Leydig cells.
The antifertility activity also can be observed by the regressive and/or degenerative changes in the epididymis, seminal vesicle, ventral prostate and coagulating gland.
Furthermore, injection of the powder also reduced the weight and fluid content of the accessory glands.
The results of the treatment also demonstrated the accumulation of glycogen and cholesterol in the testis, and increased activities of lactate dehydrogenase in testis and alkaline phosphatase in testis and ventral prostate.
The finding clearly suggested that dry leaf powder of A. paniculata processes an antispermatogenic and/or antiandrogenic effect on the mice.
Moreover, in albino Wistar rats, researchers tested the anti-male fertility of andrographolide, a major bioactive compound found in herbal Andrographis extract.
The testosterone levels and fertility indices in treatment groups were found to be comparable with that of the control indicating no effect on fertility.
Total sperm count and sperm motility were not affected. The testes and epididymides did not show any gross and histopathological changes.
Administering 0, 20, 200, and 1000 mg/kg of body weight per day, for 65 days prior to mating and 21 days during mating.
The treated groups showed no signs of dose-dependent toxicity. The body weight gain and feed consumption were not affected at any of the dose levels.
The finding clearly suggested that the efficacy of herbal Andrographis in the induction of male infertility is not attributed to a single ingredient but all ingredients in the herbal medicine.
Taken altogether, herbal Andrographis may be considered a natural anti-male fertility or male contraceptive agent with no side effect, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Bilberry, the Potential Hepato-protective Functional Remedy, Researchers Say
Bilberry may be used for the prevention and treatment of liver diseases with no side effects, according to studies.
Liver diseases are a medical condition in which the liver functions are reduced. In severe cases, liver diseases can induce liver failure.
The function of the liver is to filter out the blood from the digestive system before passing them to the cells and other parts of the body.
The largest organ also has a unique function in detoxifying the toxin in medications and drugs.
Furthermore, in the detoxification perspective, the liver also deactivates toxins by breaking down the toxins debris into a form that can be removed by the body.
Moreover, the organ performs the function of recycling old blood cells.
According to the statistics provided by the CDC and the American Liver Foundation, cirrhosis is a common liver disease which causes the death of over 31,000 people in the U.S. each year
The increase in age, gender, exposure to hepatitis viral occupation, being overweight or obese, high
blood cholesterol, hypertriglyceridemia, diabetes and long term use of certain medication such as
corticosteroids, prednisone, hydrocortisone are some prevalent risk factor of liver diseases.
In the US, the hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is the leading cause of cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
Dr. Vikas Khullar, the lead scientist in the examination of hepatitis C in risk of liver diseases wrote, "Despite recent advances in drugs for the treatment of hepatitis C, predictive models estimate the incidence of cirrhosis due to hepatitis C infection will continue to rise for the next two decades".
And, "There is currently an immense interest in the treatment of patients with fibrosis and early-stage cirrhosis as treatment can lead to decrease in the rates of decompensated cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma and need for liver transplantation in these patients".
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The herbal plant has been used as foods and herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
Researchers with an aim to find a natural compound which processes liver protective effects investigated the bilberry extract against the 18 h restraint stress-induced serious liver damage in the animal models.
Restraint mice before injection of bilberry extract showed increased malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and lower oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) values in plasma and liver.
Oral administration of bilberry extract, containing 42.04% anthocyanins) in mice at 50, 100, and 200 mg/(kg x day) for five days, remarkably decreased plasma ALT level to 17.23 +/- 2.49 U/L at the dose of 200 mg/(kg x day) and alleviated stress-induced liver damage.
Furthermore, the injection of the extract also bilberry increased antioxidant enzymes produced by the host such as glutathione (GSH) and vitamin C and significantly decreased the oxidative stress marker MDA and levels of free radicals such as nitric oxide (NO) in the liver tissues.
The findings strongly suggested that bilberry extract protects the liver against restraint stress by both scavenging free radicals activity and lipid peroxidation inhibitory effect.
Moreover, in rats induced liver damage by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) divided into four groups: Group I (0.9% NaCl-10days), Group II (bilberry extract, 75mg/kg-10days), Group III (0,9% NaCl-9days, and on the tenth day CCl4-2ml/kg), Group IV (bilberry extract, 75mg/kg-10days and on the tenth day CCl4-2ml/kg)., researchers found that
* Injection of bilberry extract significant decreases the activity of biochemical parameters associated with liver damage, such as AST, GGT, LDH, and ALT, levels of the pro-oxidative enzyme such as xanthine oxidase, and the level of lipid peroxidation in the liver in Group IV.
* Application of bilberry extract also resulted in an increase in the number of apoptotic liver damage cells by the activity of the apoptotic protein in the liver tissue.
Dr. Popović D, the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounders wrote at the end of the experiment, "Anthocyanins from bilberry extract have strong antioxidant properties and therefore can be considered as powerful hepatoprotectives in natural products".
Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a liver protective functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of liver damage and diseases pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bromelain Protects the Inner Lining of Colon Against Colitis
Colitis is a medical condition associated with the inflammation of the inner lining of the colon.
The causes of colitis can be results of infection, inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, ischemic colitis, allergic reactions, and microscopic colitis.
Most common systems of colitis are total depending on the types of condition, including abdominal pain, cramping, diarrhea, with or without blood in the stool.
Some patients with colitis also experience symptoms of fever, chills, fatigue, dehydration, eye inflammation.
If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.
According to the statistics, in the US, 1.6 million Americans are living with inflammatory bowel disease, about 907,000 of them have ulcerative colitis.
Also, according to the study by the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, the most common types of colitis include
* Microscopic colitis is an inflammation of the large intestine (colon) that causes persistent watery diarrhea.
* Ischemic colitis is inflammation and injury of the large intestine that results from the inadequate blood supply.
* Segmental colitis is an inflammation of the colonic luminal mucosa.
* Radiation enteritis is inflammation of the intestines caused by radiotherapy.
* Diversion colitis is an inflammation of the colon associated with the complication of ileostomy or colostomy.
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and for the treatment of pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
On finding a natural compound for the treatment of colitis, researchers examined whether long-term dietary supplementation with pineapple (supplied as juice) could decrease colon inflammation in neoplasia in Il10(-/-) mice with chronic colitis, compared to bromelain derived from the stem.
The experiment included colitis Il10(-/-) mice induced by exposure to the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug piroxicam followed by supplemented with fresh vs. boiled pineapple juice or bromelain purified (14 mg bromelain) from the stem for up to 6 months.
During the study, daily treatment of fresh juice had a decreased histologic colon inflammation scores and a lower incidence of inflammation scores, compared to those treated with bromelain purified (14 mg bromelain).
Futhermore, both treatments showed fewer neoplastic lesions/colon. However, fresh juice lower incidence of inflammation-associated colonic neoplasia by 35% compared to 66% of those treated with bromelain purified (14 mg bromelain).
According to the flow cytometric analysis of murine splenocytes in vitro, fresh pineapple juice demonstrated a proteolytic removal of cell surface molecules that can affect leukocyte trafficking and activation, compared to those treated with bromelain purified.
The finding strongly supported the long-term use of pineapple juice with proteolytically active bromelain enzymes for the treatment of inflammatory induction of colitis.
Dr. Hale LP, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "long-term dietary supplementation with fresh or unpasteurized frozen pineapple juice with proteolytically active bromelain enzymes is safe and decreases inflammation severity and the incidence and multiplicity of inflammation-associated colonic neoplasia in this commonly used murine model of inflammatory bowel disease".
Taken altogether, pineapple (supplied as juice) processed a high amount of bioactive compound bromelain may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of colitis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Burdock, The Functional Herb Which Protects Skin Against Aging Caused by Reactive Oxidative Species (ROS)
Herbal Burdock may process a profound and positive effect in inhibited free radicals activity in the induction of early onset of natural aging, some scientists suggested.
Burdock is planted in the group of biennial thistles, genus Arctium, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to the Euro.
The herb has been used over thousands of years in China and other traditional herbal medicine as a diuretic, diaphoretic, and blood purifying agent and to treat wounds and infections stomach ulcers and other digestive problems.
A free radical is any atom or molecule that has a single unpaired electron in an outer shell and highly reactive to react with another cell, which in turn, causes oxidative damage to the enzymes, other protein,.... unsaturated fatty acid.
Prolonged overexpression of free radical was found to cause widespread damage through domino's chain reaction auto-catalytically after attacking the lipid bilayers of the cell walls.
Truly, epidemiological studies strongly suggested that reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) existed as radicals or nonradicals, as well as reactive sulfur species and reactive carbon species, play a major role in aging processes.
Dr. Wölfle U, the lead scientist in the examine the effect of ROS in the induction of skin aging said, " When RMS concentrations exceed a certain threshold, cell compartments and cells are injured and destroyed" and " Endogenous physiological mechanisms are able to neutralize RMS to some extent, thereby limiting damage. In the skin, however, pollutants and particularly UV irradiation are able to produce additional oxidants which overload the endogenous protection system and cause early aging, debilitation of immune functions, and skin cancer".
Some researchers suggested that an unhealthy diet with low nutrition high in advanced glycation end products (AGEs) may also contribute to oxidation induced early aging process.
In the study of the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and the content of Malondialdehyde (MDA) and lipofuscin in the tissues of the liver, brain and blood serum of the lab rats at the 30 days after feeding with the Niubanggen decoction, researchers found that* Levels of SOD in the liver tissue and blood serum were improved substantially in decoction treat rats
* Levels of the content of MDA in the brain tissue and blood serum were lower in compared to baseline.
* Levels of lipofuscin were also dropped significantly.
These results suggested that herbal burdock exerts strong anti-aging effects through activating antioxidant of the host in inhibited ROS in induction oxidative stress through the expression of biomarkers of SOD and MDA and lipofuscin.
Herbal burdock antioxidant activity in the differentiation of 23 distinct herbal medicine was found to process anti-elastase activities up to 51% in the prevention of the destruction of elastic fiber.
Furthermore, in the review of the therapeutic effects of the active compounds presented in the different botanical parts of burdock, researchers at the The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, found that the root of burdock containing active ingredients "detoxify" blood in terms of TCM and promote blood circulation to the skin surface, improving the skin quality/texture and curing skin diseases like eczema.
However, burdock may induce contact dermatitis and other allergic/inflammatory responses, the University continued.
Taking all together, function herb burdock processes bioactive ingredients that protect the skin against aging and disease through its antioxidants activity in inhibiting the overexpression of free radicals.
