Chamomile may be considered an adjunct therapy or combined with conventional medicine for treatment of anxiety, some scientists suggested.
Anxiety is a psychological disorder characterized by a constant worry about future events and fear of current events.
A prolonged period of stress from work, school, the personal relationship such as marriage and from an emotional trauma such as the death of a loved one or from a serious medical illness can elevate the onset of the syndrome.
Other causes of anxiety may include long-term use of certain medications and illicit drugs, such as cocaine.
Some researchers also suggested the risk of anxiety are associated with genetic mutation inherited from the parent and traumatic events that alter brain structure and function.
Some people may experience some levels of anxiety in low oxygen levels in high-altitude areas.
Altogether, one may say, anxiety disorder is a result of a combination of biological, psychological, and other individual factors.
If you have some of the symptoms of feeling nervous, restless or tense, a sense of impending danger, panic or doom, an increased heart rate, breathing rapidly, and persistent sweating and trembling. Please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of an anxiety disorder.
Chamomile is also known as camomile, a common name of many species daisy-like plants in the family Asteraceae.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory constituents and to treat menstrual cramps and sleep disorders, reduce cramping and spastic pain in the bowels, relieve excessive gas and bloating in the intestine, etc.
Chemical ingredients include
Guaianolides matricarin and achillin, acetoxyachillin and leucodin (= desacetoxymatricarin), corresponding C-11 stereoisomers(a),(Z)-2-β-d-glucopyranosyloxy-4-methoxycinnamic acid (cis-GMCA), chlorogenic acid, (E)-2-β-d-glucopyranosyloxy-4-methoxycinnamic acid (trans-GMCA), quercetagetin-7-O-β-d-glucopyranoside, luteolin-7-O-β-d-glucoside, apigenin-7-O-β-d-glucoside, chamaemeloside, apigenin 7-O-(6″-O-acetyl-β-d-glucopyranoside), apigenin] and one polyacetylene (tonghaosu)(b).
In the finding, a natural ingredient for the treatment of anxiety with no side effects, researchers at the launched a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled and tolerability trial to examine Matricaria recutita (chamomile) extract activity in patients with mild to moderate generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).
In a total of 61 outpatients with mild to moderate GAD were enrolled, and 57 were randomized to either double-blind chamomile extract (n = 28) or placebo therapy (n = 29) for 8 weeks.
Application of Matricaria recutita (chamomile) extract demonstrated a significantly greater reduction in the mean total Hamilton Anxiety Rating (HAM-A) score compared to placebo.
There are no intolerated adverse effects found in both groups.
Dr. Amsterdam JD, the lead author at the final report, wrote. "chamomile may have modest anxiolytic activity in patients with mild to moderate GAD".
Additionally, in the study to determine whether commercially available botanicals directly affect the primary brain enzymes responsible for gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) metabolism, researchers launched an analysis of the anxiolytic effects of chamomile aqueous and ethanolic plant extracts.
The chamomile aqueous extract showed significant inhibition of GAD activity (0.11-0.65 mg/mL) without affecting the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) metabolism.
These findings suggested chamomile aqueous extract exerts anxiolytic activity through interaction with the glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) in the influence of neurotransmission.
Furthermore, in the study of the sedative effects of Apigenin, the bioactive compound isolated from Chamomile in mice, researchers found that
* Apigenin competitively inhibited the binding of flunitrazepam, a powerful hypnotic drug that is a benzodiazepine derivative with a Ki of 4 microM in exerting the sedative activity.
* Apigenin had a clear anxiolytic activity in mice are the elevated plus-maze which are used to test the anxiety in the laboratory.
Increased application of Apigenin by a 10-fold compared to normal concentrations displays a mild sedative effect as seen on a 26% reduction in ambulatory locomotor activity and a 35% decrement in hole-board parameters.
Taken altogether, herbal chamomile with abundant bioactive compounds may be considered a secondary therapy or combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of anxiety, pending to larger and multi-centers human studies.

Herbal Calendula, the Potent Anti Edema Functional Remedy
Herbal Calendula may have a potential effect in reducing the risk and treatment of edema, some scientists suggested.
Edema is a condition characterized by an abnormal accumulation of fluid in certain tissues within the body due to injury or inflammation.
In most cases, edema occurs under the surfaces of the skin in the leg and ankle. However, fluids can also be accumulated in the lungs (pulmonary edema).
Without the assistance of diagnosis, researchers can not pinpoint the exact causes of edema.
There are numbers of risk factor associated with the onset of the swellings, such as low levels of albumin that keeps the blood in the vessels, allergic reaction, blood clots. Some medical conditions such as congestive heart failure, kidney diseases and long-term intake medicine such as NSAIDs and calcium channel blockers also increased the risk of edema.
Some researchers suggested that under normal conditions, medicine that removes excess fluid and reduces intake salt can be effective. However, if the condition of edema is caused by an underlying disease, separated medicine treatment may be required.
If you are experiencing symptoms of heavy leg and ankle and shortness of breath, please check with your doctor to rule out the edema possibility.
Calendula is also known as pot marigold, annual or perennial herbaceous plants of about 12–20 species of genus Calendula, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Southern Europe.
The herb has been used in herbal medicine as spasmolytic, spasmogenic, inflammatory effects and to treat abdominal cramps, wound healing, skin diseases, colitis, constipation, etc.
Chemical ingredients
Besides major chemical constituents of triterpenoids, flavonoids, coumarines, quinones, volatile oil, carotenoids and amino acids, the herb also contains loliolide (calendin), calendulin and n-paraffins.
In the study to examine the anti-inflammatory effect of Calendula officinalis flower extract against paw edema, researchers at the Amala Cancer Research Centre launched an investigation in the paw edema of animals induced by carrageenan and dextran.
Oral injection of 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight of Calendula extract exerted a significant inhibition (50.6 and 65.9% respectively) in paw edema of animals by 41.9% in the carrageenan group and 42.4% in the dextran group, respectively through the anti-inflammatory activity.
In the chronic inflammatory model induced by injection of formalin, administration of 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight of Calendula extract produced the inhibition of 32.9 and 62.3% respectively compared to controls.
Further examination also found that pro-inflammatory cytokines activated by macrophage of the immune system in the response to infection are also reduced significantly.
Other pro-inflammatory proteins such as IL- 1beta, IL-6, TNF-alpha and IFN-gamma and acute-phase protein, C- reactive protein (CRP) in edema mice produced by LPS injection were inhibited significantly by the extracts in different doses.
These results suggested that herbal Calendula inhibits edema caused by inflammation through its anti-inflammatory expression.
Additionally, in the study to reaffirm the efficacy of Calendula anti-inflammation against the progression of edema, researchers at the niversità di Trento conducted a differentiation on the anti-inflammatory chemical constituents of the herb.
Three derivatives of Rings A, D, and E of faradiol, the C(16) benzyl ether 15, the C(30) aldehyde 24, and the C(30) primary alcohol 25 isolated from the herb also showed a significantly improved anti-inflammatory potency.
Taken altogether, herbal Calendula with the abundant anti-inflammatory bioactive compounds may have a potential effect in the prevention and treatment of inflammatory edema.

Herbal Cayenne, the Best Antioxidant Functional Fruit
Herbal Cayenne may have a potential effect in stimulating the production of antioxidants from the host body to inhibit the overexpression of free radicals, some scientists suggested.
Free radicals are unstable molecules having an unpaired electron in the outer ring. in order for them to maintain stable, free radical must donate or steal an electron from another molecule, leading to a domino's chain reaction that cannot stop until inhibited by antioxidant or they are paired.
Antioxidants are stable molecules that inhibit the free radical oxidation and the unpaired electrons which are highly and chemically reactive in the human body.
Normally, the expression of free radicals is neutralized by antioxidants produced by the host body enzymes. However, if the host antioxidant enzymes are suppressed, free radicals can overexpress, leading to oxidative stress.
Overexpression of free radicals in initiating oxidative stress to the human body can cause oxidative damage to the cells, proteins, and DNA, the underlying factors in many chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
Most common free radicals have been found to cause significant damage to DNA, proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids of the cell nucleus, and membranes are hydroxyl radical, superoxide anion radical, hydrogen peroxide, oxygen singlet, hypochlorite, nitric oxide radical, and peroxynitrite radicals.
The causes of the production of free radicals are associated either from normal essential metabolic processes in the human body inducing diet or from external sources such as exposure to X-rays, ozone, cigarette smoking, air pollutants, and industrial chemicals.
People who follow the Western diet high in saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed foods ( high oxidation) and low in fruits and vegetables (low antioxidants) are susceptible to the overexpression of free radical or oxidative stress.
Truly, Fats and oils not can be oxidized during storage as a result of exposure to light, air but also can become oxidized, creating free radicals, if they are heated in high temperature, the main cooking style found in the Western diet.
Saturated fats are less likely than unsaturated fats to become oxidized. When cooking fats are reused, they become more oxidized and produce even more free radicals.
Cayenne is also known as Cayenne pepper, a red, hot chili pepper, belonging to Capsicum annuum, the family Solanaceae, native to subtropical and tropical regions.
The kitchen spice has been used in traditional medicine to increases metabolism, enhance the circulatory system and stomach and the intestinal tract, adjust blood pressure, lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, treat frostbite, muscles, arthritis, rheumatism, low back pain, strains, sprains, bruises, and neuralgia, etc.
The chemical constituents of Cayenne include capsaicin, capsaicin oil, solanine, xanthenes, oleic acid, palmitic acid, etc.
In the investigation of the antioxidant activity, DPPH radical-scavenging activity correlated with total bioactive compounds (capsaicinoids, carotenoids, flavonoids, and total phenolics) in pepper cultivars, researchers at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid launched a study on the individual carotenoid and phenolic content as well as the antioxidant properties of four red-hot dried cultivars (Capsicum annuum L.).
Hot dried peppers at the ripe stage demonstrated the high content of bioactive compounds that exhibited significant antioxidant properties (26-80 micromol Trolox equivalents/g of dry matter), compared to polyphenols >2000 mg/100 g of dry matter and carotenoids ranging from 95-437 mg/100 g of dry matter.
The amount released from the food matrix by the action of digestive enzymes was about 75% for total polyphenols, up to 49% for both beta-carotene and zeaxanthin, and up to 41% for beta-cryptoxanthin.
And, 50 to 80% of these carotenoids could reach the colon to be potentially fermented or could remain unavailable.
Furthermore, the study of sweet red bell pepper, one of the best sources of ascorbic acid and carotenoids and phenolic compounds important in the human diet, researchers emphasized that organic growing increased the level of antioxidant compounds such as carotenoids, phenolic compounds and vitamin C in sweet bell pepper, compared to conventional cultivated.
However, the second significant factor affecting the antioxidant compound content of sweet bell pepper was totally depending on the varieties.
Geography, climate change environment factors and time of harvest may also affect the antioxidant contents of the bell pepper.
Taken altogether, herbal cayenne processed a high amount of bioactive antioxidants may be considered a functional food for reducing the risk of oxidative stress-related diseases.
Due to numbers of an unknown factor which may affect the quality of the fruits, further data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of herbal cayenne antioxidant possibilities.

Herbal Anise In Anti Muscle and Blood Vessel Constriction and Spasmodic Related Diseases
Anise may have potential and substantial relaxant effects in reduced overexpression of vessel and muscle constrictions in precipitation of related diseases, some scientists suggested.
Anise is a flowering plant of the species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belongings to the family Apiaceae native to Egypt and the Mediterranean region, used in traditional herbal medicine as fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners and stomachic, anti-septic, anti-spasmodic,...
Chemical comstituents
Anethole, D-pinene, I-phellandrene, Alpha-terpineol, Safrol, Methyl chavicol, Resin, Shikimic acid, etc.
According to the evaluation of Anise 3 hidroalcoholic extracts claimed to have a substantial effect in tracheal and ileal smooth muscles in 3 different concentration of doses at 40% (HA(40%)), 60% (HA(60%)) or 80% (HA(80%)) researchers found that application of all extracts at half maximum effect, 50 microg/mL EC(50) inhibited acetylcholine-induced contraction. However, the extract HA(60%) at 5-50 microg/mL(EC(5-50)) concentration-dependently relaxed acetylcholine-pre-contracted tissues and HA(40%) and HA(80%) did not exert relaxant action in any volume out of indicated range.
Injection of muscle constriction substances such as N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME, 100 microM), 1H-[1,2,4]oxadiazolo[4,3-a]quinoxalin-1-one (ODQ, 3 microM) and oxyhemoglobin (10 microM) were also inhibited by HA(60%) in doses concentration-dependent manner through the influence of muscle relaxation.
Furthermore, in additional treatment of nitric oxide synthase(L-NAME) in induced production of vascular smooth muscle cells and enhanced the maximal contraction induced by acetylcholine, administration of HA(60%) expressed a strong activity in modulated NO contractile response, stimulated by primary transmitter released by inhibitory nerves through cyclic GMP-dependent which is found to have an implication in the regulation of smooth muscle relaxation and other independent mechanisms
Further observation also indicated that the injection of HA 60% showed an insignificant effect in calcium chloride(CaCl(2))-induced muscle contraction.
Dr. Tirapelli CR, the lead author at the Escola de Enfermagem de Ribeirão Preto. said, "The relaxant action displayed by Pimpinella anisum justifies its use in the folk medicine as an antispasmodic agent".
In isolated tracheal chains of the guinea pig induced by 10 microM methacholine in non-incubated tissues (group 1) and incubated tissues with 1 microM propranolol and 1 microM chlorpheniramine (group 2), to investigate the relaxant effect of Pimpinella anisum aqueous and ethanol extracts and essential oil, researchers showed that injections Anise aqueous and ethanol extracts, essential oil and theophylline, a conventional medicine used to relaxed relaxing bronchial smooth muscle in COPD and asthma patients display a substantial activity in exhibited relaxant effects in compared to those of controls.
There was no significant difference between both Pimpinella anisum aqueous and ethanol extracts in promoted muscle relaxation but lower efficacy in compared to those of theophylline.
Moreover, the applications of essential oil and 10 nM atropine, a muscle relaxant medicine, used as nerve anticholinergic agent, blocked the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the central and the peripheral nervous system in responsible for the involuntary movement of smooth muscles and reduced the muscle contraction caused by methacholine, a substance used to tighten the lung muscle and airway for test of asthma. These results indicated a potential activity of bronchodilatory and anticholinergic effects of essential oil, aqueous, and ethanol extracts from Anise.
Truly, researchers also found that application of any dose either expressed an insignificant effect in inhibited histamine (H(1)) expressed in smooth muscles, on vascular endothelial cells, in the heart, and in the central nervous system or stimulated beta(2)-adrenergic receptor in binding to epinephrine, a hormone and neurotransmitter in increased blood flow to muscles, in initiated smooth muscle relaxation.
Dr. Boskabady MH, after taking into account of other co-founders, said, "showed that the relaxant effect of this plant is not due to an inhibitory effect of histamine (H(1)) or stimulatory effect of beta(2)-adrenergic receptors, but due to inhibitory effects on muscarinic receptors".
Taken together, both Anise aqueous and ethanol extracts and essential oil may be used as adjunct herbal medicine in reduced risk of diseases associated to spasmodic muscle contraction in the induction of muscle cramp accompanied by a sudden burst of pain caused by abnormal nerve stimulation or by abnormal activity of the muscles and vessels.

How to Protect Your Skin Against Lipid Peroxidation Naturally
Scientists may have found a herbal medicine for the protection of the skin against the oxidative stress in the induction of skin diseases, with no side effects, some studies suggested.
What are the exact causes of skin damage? Some researchers suggested that long-term exposure to the sun is the most common cause of skin damage. UV rays can damage the DNA of skin cells, affecting the normal skin cell growth. UV rays have been linked to the early onset of skin cancer, epidemiologically.
Other causes of skin damage include chronic stress, skin diseases such as pimples, acne, or rosacea.
Truly, improper skincare and healing of a pimple, acne, and rosacea can damage the facial skin, leaving an uneven skin tone.
Dr. Ying Chen, the lead scientist in the study "Brain-Skin Connection: Stress, Inflammation and Skin Aging" wrote, "The intricate relationship between stress and skin conditions has been documented since ancient times. Recent clinical observations also link psychological stress to the onset or aggravation of multiple skin diseases".
Ingredients
Besides having major chemical constituents of triterpenoids, flavonoids, coumarins, quinones, volatile oil, carotenoids, and amino acids, the herb also contains loliolide (calendin), calendulin and n-paraffins.
In the study to reaffirm the sun-protective effects of essential oil extracted from Calendula flowers (Calendula officinalis L., Asteraceae).\in a cream formulation, researchers at the Bhagwant University launched an investigation using in vitro method employing UV-visible spectrophotometer (Shimazdu-1600).
Application of the cream exerted a significant effect in protecting the skin against UV radiations in the form of sunscreen cream and maintaining the natural pigmentation of the skin, without inducing no side effects.
Furthermore, the application of a cream (O/W) containing 4% and 5% of Calendula essential oil on biochemical parameters of the skin of albino rats against UV-B radiation also decreased the oxidative stress markers observed by a significant decrease in the malondialdehyde level.
Additional analysis suggested that 4% and 5% of Calendula essential oil inhibited the levels of oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation through stimulating the production of antioxidant enzymes such as catalase, glutathione, superoxide dismutase in the host and increasing the levels of ascorbic acid, and the total protein level after 1 month of daily irradiation and treatment, compared to untreated control groups.
Interestingly, the cutaneous application of the essential oil of Calendula prevents UV-B-induced alterations in the level of antioxidants in skin tissue.
These discoveries indicated reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated from UV-B radiation with the capacity to cause oxidative decomposition which leads to the formation of toxic components and lipid peroxidation is totally inhibited by the topical 4% and 5% of Calendula essential oil.
The Islamia University of Bahawalpur, launched an evaluation to test the effects of newly formulated topical cream of Calendula extract on the mechanical parameters, such as age-related changes in skin, skin elasticity, skin fatigue, skin hydration, and antiaging, using the Cutometer 580 MPA device designed to measure the mechanical properties of the skin in response to the application of negative pressure.
Two creams (base and formulation) prepared in the study were applied to the cheeks of 21 healthy human volunteers for a period of eight weeks. Every individual was asked to come on weeks 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 for measurements, using Cutometer MPA 580 every week.
At the end of the experiment, researchers found that newly formulated topical cream of Calendula extract exerts significant improvements only in hydration and firmness of the skin.
The findings suggested that Calendula essential oil and extract may have a potential effect in preventing skin damage by UV-B radiation and protecting the skin against damage due to oxidative stress.
However, due to the limitation of the above studies, further data collection on large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of the exposure will be necessary to complete the picture of skin protective possibilities.

Herbal chamomile in the Prevention and Treatment of Anxiety Disorders
Herbal Chamomile may have a potential effect in reducing risk and treatment of anxiety disorder, according to studies.
Anxiety disorders are a group of mental illnesses characterized by symptoms of excessive anxiety, fear, worry, avoidance, and compulsive rituals. The condition is more commonly in women than in men.
Some researchers suggested that anxiety disorders are conditions associated with the combination of biological, psychological, and individual factors and the most commonly reported psychiatric conditions and frequently occur as comorbid disorders.
According to the statistic, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults in the age of 18 and older, or 18.1% of the population every year.
The exact causes of anxiety disorders are debatable. However, a family history of anxiety recent or prolonged exposure to stress, excessive consumption of stimulants such as caffeine or tobacco is associated with the onset of the disorders.
The symptoms of anxiety disorders can be psychological or physical, including difficulty concentrating and sleeping, irritability, persistent stomachaches or diarrhea, sweaty palms, shaking and rapid heartbeat.
If you experience some of the above symptoms, please make sure you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.
Dr. Lykouras L, the lead scientist in the investigation of the connection between body weight and anxiety disorders wrote, "Obesity has been associated with anxiety disorders as follows: most of the studies show a positive relationship with panic disorder, mainly in women, with specific phobia and social phobia" and "Some authors have found a relationship with generalized anxiety disorder but a negative relationship has been also reported".
The results clearly indicated if you are obese, your risk of anxiety disorders is increased substantially compared to normal weight people.
Chamomile is also known as camomile, the common name of many species daisy-like plants in the family Asteraceae. The herb has been used in traditional medicine as antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory constituents and for the treatment of menstrual cramps and sleep disorders, reduce cramping and spastic pain in the bowels, relieve excessive gas and bloating in the intestine, etc.
In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled efficacy and tolerability trial of Matricaria recutita (chamomile) extract on generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) showed to effective of modest anxiolytic activity with patient mild to moderate GAD(1). The University of Ottawa study on the effects of Matricaria recutita (German chamomile) and Humulus lupulus (hops) showed significant activity in the inhibition of GAD at doses of 0.11-0.65 mg/mL(2).
The study containing 57 participants in the 2009 trial, 19 had anxiety with comorbid depression; 16 had anxiety with a past history of depression, and 22 had anxiety with no current or past depression, chamomile showed a clinically meaningful antidepressant activity to its previously observed anxiolytic activity(3).
Apigenin, a component of Matricaria recutita flowers, in mice study, exerted its anxiolytic and slight sedative effects through the central benzodiazepine receptors(4).
Researchers at the University Science Center on finding a treatment of anxiety disorder examined the effects of chamomile extract therapy in patients with mild to moderate generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) on a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled efficacy and tolerability trial.
In a total of 63 outpatients with mild to moderate GAD enrolled, 57 were randomized to either double-blind chamomile extract (n = 28) or placebo therapy (n = 29) for 8 weeks.
The chamomile treated group exerted a significantly greater reduction in mean total HAM-A score compared to the placebo.
Furthermore, besides the better primary outcomes, chamomile group also demonstrated a positive change in all secondary outcomes in the reduction of anxiety symptoms.
Mild and tolerated adverse events or more were not significantly different between groups.
The findings clearly suggested herbal chamomile extract processes a modest anxiolytic activity in patients with mild to moderate GAD.
Moreover, in the evaluation of the chamomile effect on gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) which is a neurotransmitter that blocks impulses between nerve cells in the brain researchers compared the herbal plants which were used in the traditional medicine for the treatment of anxiety disorders.
Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter has been found to initiate the risk of anxiety or mood disorders in low levels
In vitro rat brain homogenate assays, compared to other herbal plants such as Melissa officinalis, Centella asiatica (Gotu Kola) and Valeriana officinalis (Valerian), chamomile showed significant inhibition of glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) activity (0.11-0.65 mg/mL).
These results strongly suggested that the failure of the interaction of members in the GAGA system caused by dysfunction was attributed to the onset of anxiety disorders.
Additionally, in participants with symptoms of comorbid anxiety and depression, according to the generalized estimating equations analysis to identify clinically meaningful changes over time in scores from the Hamilton Depression Rating (HAM-D) questionnaire among treatment groups, Chamomile group displays a significantly greater reduction over time in total HAM-D scores compared to placebo.
Also, the HAM-D core mood item scores, application of chamomile also showed a significantly greater reduction over time vs placebo in all participants, regardless of the current or past depression.
Taken altogether, herbal chamomile may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention of anxiety disorders in the higher-risk populations and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of anxiety diseases with tolerated adverse effects.

Better Than Chemo DuP-697 in Inhibited Immune Suppressor Prostaglandin (PG)E(2) for Treatment of Non Small Cell Lung Cancer
Arnica may have a therapeutic and potential effect in reduced risk and treatment of nonsmall cell lung cancer, some scientists suggested.
The result of the efficacy was reported by a number of investigations conducted by several respectable institutes, such as the University of Groningen and Center for Cancer Research, Bethesda and published on online medical literature.
Lung cancer is a chronic and medical condition characterized by irregular and controllable cell growth in the lung tissue.
Arnica is a herbaceous species, genus perennial, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia, used in herbal medicine for centuries to treat strains, sprains, and bruises.
Wound healing is a process of repairing after the damage of the skin, tissues, organs, etc.
According to the University of Groningen in the investigated cytotoxicity of 21 flavonoids and 5 sesquiterpene lactones presented in Arnica species on GLC4, a human small cell lung carcinoma cell line, using the microculture tetrazolium (MTT) assays.
* Application of compound cisplatin (IC50 = 1.1 microM and 2.9 microM showed the greatest inhibition of human small cell lung carcinoma cell line, through cytotoxic activity in compared to most flavonoids isolated.
* The most toxic compound was the flavone jaceosidin on GLC4
* Helenalin, possessing both the reactive alpha-methylene-gamma-lactone moiety and a reactive alpha,beta-unsubstituted cyclopentenone ring, displayed the strongest cytotoxicity on GLC4.
Flavonoids processed significantly antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, according to online literature were found abundantly in tea, citrus fruit, citrus fruit juices, berries, red wine,...
And phytochemicals sesquiterpene lactones found in some herbs, such as Artichoke, Boneset Eupatorium perfoliatum, Burdock, Calea ternifolia, Chamomile,.... are also used for the treatment of diseases associated to inflammatory, protozoal, bacterial and microbial infection.
Additionally, in the evaluated the effects of anethole dithiolethione modified valproate, diclofenac, and sulindac isolated from Arnica on non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells, researchers found that injection of the bioactive chemicals exerted a potential anti lung cancer effect through inhibited the levels of prostaglandin (PG)E(2) in NSCLC cell lines A549 and NCI-H1299 in compared to the conventional medicine COX-2 inhibitor DuP-697.
Prostaglandin (PG)E(2) is linked to the progression of several types of cancer through its tumor-associated inflammation in created an immunosuppressive microenvironment, allowing tumor cells to escape immunosurveillance.
Moreover, in compared to all anethole modifications in vivo, S-valproate and S-diclofenac, exerted a strong anti-growth of A549 cells. but not S-sulindac.
S-valproate and S-diclofenac significantly inhibited A549 or NCI-H1299 xenograft proliferation in nude mice but had no effect on the nude mouse body weight.
Dr. Moody TW, the lead author, after taking into comparable tests of all ingredients through Western blot, said, "S-valproate and S-diclofenac inhibit the growth of NSCLC cells and reduce PGE(2) levels, they may prove beneficial in the chemoprevention and/or therapy of NSCLC".
The information findings suggested that Arnica and its bioactive ingredients may be considered as a functional herb in the prevention and combined with conventional standard therapy in stop progression and treatment of nonsmall cell lung cancer.
