Green Tea and Green Tea Catechins In reduced Risk and Treatment of Pancreatic Cancer

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect on reduced risk and treatment of pancreatic cancer, some scientists suggested.

Green tea, a precious drink processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine or food, long term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, induced "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weaken immunity and painful case of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory.

Pancreatic cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissues of the pancreas. At the later stage, the cancerous cell may travel a distance away to invade other healthy tissues and organs.

According to statistics, the average lifetime risk of pancreatic cancer for both men and women is about 1 in 65.

In the analysis of medical literature published online, green tea catechins, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) effects in reduced risk and treatment of pancreatic cancer were attributed to the contributions of various mechanisms.

In human pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) cell lines PancTu-I, Panc1, Panc89 and BxPC3, to compare the inhibited effect of EGCG to 2 components of catechins, namely, catechin gallate (CG) and epicatechin gallate (ECG), application of green tea 2 catechins components demonstrated a strong effect in inhibited proliferation of PDAC cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner.
In a comparison test, green tea CG and ECG exerted much stronger anti-proliferation effects than those of EGCG.

The proliferation of PancTu-I cells retained by green tea catechin was attributed to the antioxidant effect in interference of the cancer cell division cycle through mediating the cytokines in modulation of cell cycle regulatory proteins, such as cyclins, a cell division regulators, cyclin-dependent kinase (Cdk) enzymes activated by cyclins in regulated cell progression through cell cycle arrest, and CDK inhibitors with function in prevented over-proliferation of cancer cells.
Additionally, all 3 components of green tea catechins also demonstrated a substantiated effect in the ameliorated secretion of pro-inflammatory and invasion promoting proteins of the cancer cell through the expression of TNF tumor necrosis factor in the activation of the nuclear factor NF-κB protein signaling involved mediation of DNA transcript, pro-inflammatory cytokines production, and cancer cell survival.

Tumor necrosis factor is a cell signaling protein possessed a wide range of proinflammatory actions

NF-κB is a protein with function in controlled transcription of DNA, cytokine production and cell survival.

Further analysis once again found that green tea catechins ECG and CG exhibit potent and much stronger anti-proliferate and anti-inflammatory activities on PDAC cells in compared to EGCG

In human pancreatic cancer cells lines MIA PaCa-2 cells, injection of green tea EGCG plus Bleomycin, (BLM), an anti-cancer chemotherapeutic drug displayed a substantial effect in inhibited cell proliferation through cell cycle transition phase arrest and mitochondrial depolarization by mitochondrial permeability transition in the induction of cell apoptosis, after 72 hours.

Additional examination, indicates that EGCG and BLM exhibited anti-proliferative effects significantly in induced apoptosis of MIA PaCa-2 cells and suggested that this combination could represent a new strategy with potential advantages for the treatment of pancreatic cancer.
In pancreatic cancer cell lines MIA PaCa-2 and PANC-1, injection of pterostilbene isolated from blueberry and EGCG expressed a strongly additive antiproliferative effect after 72 hours with MIA underwent S-phase arrest but not in cancer cell line PANC-1.

Both pterostilbene and EGCG induced mitochondrial depolarization in enhanced cytochrome c released from mitochondria to trigger programmed cell death during the early stages of apoptosis was observed also in MIA, but not in PANC

EGCG increased caspase-3/7 function in induced cell apoptosis in MIA but the combined treatment did not significantly increase the activity in either cell lines. these contradictory activities may indicate that cell death occurs in MIA, possibly through another mechanism.

Taking all together, green tea with abundant antioxidant catechins may be used as an adjunct therapy for reduced risk and combined standard medicine for the treatment of pancreatic cancer.

Turmeric, the Natural Treatment for Metabolic Dysfunction with No Side Effects, Revealed by Scientists

Scientists may have found a kitchen spice that processes bioactive ingredients for the treatment of metabolic dysfunction with no side effects, according to studies.

Metabolism is a natural chemical process of organisms, including humans with an aim to sustain- life.

According to the purposes of the bioprocess, human metabolism can be classified into the process to convert food to energy by breaking down the carbohydrates, proteins, and fats to run cellular processes, and eliminate nitrogenous wastes.

Metabolic dysfunction is a condition caused by any interruption of the aforementioned processes.
In other words, metabolic dysfunction induces the production of excess or a reduced amount of substances needed to stay healthy.

A metabolic disorder can be caused by genetic proposition induced inborn errors of metabolism, or acquired by an individual in the lifetime

There are many risk factors associated with the onset of metabolic dysfunction depending on the types of disruption such as abnormal blood glucose metabolism induced type 2 diabetes.

Diseases associated with metabolic dysfunction can be moderate or severe depending on the organs involved, including liver or respiratory failure, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD, includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis), and HIV/AIDS.

Symptoms of metabolic dysfunction are varied among individuals depending totally to the types of disorder.

Some mild conditions of metabolic dysfunction can be managed with an only lifestyle change, others may require the long-term intake of certain medications accompanied by a healthy diet and moderate exercise such as diabetes.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
With an aim to find a natural compound for the treatment of metabolic dysfunction, researchers examined the potential capacity of curcumin, contained in Curcuma longa extract (Biocurcuma™),in the attenuation of risperidone-induced metabolic dysfunction in an animal model.

The study involved 4 groups of mice were treated once a week, for 22 weeks with an intraperitoneal injection of risperidone (Risperdal) at a dose of 12.5 mpk.

One group of mice in the risperidone-treated group were fed a diet with 0.05% Biocurcuma™ (curcumin), one of the vehicle-treated group and two other groups received the standard diet.

Curcumin treatment group inhibited the risperidone effect in reducing spontaneous motricity (motor function) but failed to impede de risperidone-induced increase in food intake.

In other words, curcumin failed to reduced de risperidone-induced weight gain and steatosis.but decreased visceral adiposity stored within the abdominal cavity and decreased the risperidone-induced abnormal enlargement of the liver.

Furthermore, curcumin protected the liver enzymes associated with lipid and glucose metabolism against the overexpression in the induction of metabolic dysfunction by modulating the risperidone-induced glucose intolerance and hypertriglyceridemia.

Moreover, the curcumin treatment group also showed to reduce levels of markers of hepatotoxicity (ALAT, ASAT) and proinflammatory cytokines expression caused by risperidone (Risperdal).

Dr. Auger F, the lead scientist said, "These findings support that nutritional doses of curcumin contained in Curcuma longa extract are able to partially counteract the risperidone-induced metabolic dysfunction in mice".

The findings suggested that Curcuma longa extract inhibited metabolic dysfunction through a number of mechanisms involving adipocytes, pancreatic cells, hepatic stellate cells, macrophages, and muscle cells.

Taken altogether, turmeric and its bioactive compound curcumin may be considered functional remedies for the treatment of syndrome and diseases associated with metabolic dysfunction, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Aloe Vera, the Anti Constipation Natural Whole Food Medicine

A recent study suggested that Aloe Vera may process an anti-constipation effect, through the expression of improved intestinal motility, increased fecal volume and normalized body weight.

Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan. It has become very popular for commercial cultivation due to its health benefits. Aloe Vera has been used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of diseases, including wound, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes, and elevated cholesterol, etc.
Constipation is a condition in difficulty in emptying the bowels, in the most case associated with hardened feces.

According to the University of Fort Hare, in a constipation condition induced by oral administration of loperamide (3 mg/kg body weight) in comparison to control rats received normal saline, intake of aqueous leaf extract of Aloe ferox Mill. with 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight/day or 7 days improved the laxative property with the best efficacy in 200 mg/kg body weight.

Dr. Wintola OA, the lead researcher said, "The effect of the extract compares favorably well with senokot, a standard laxative drug. These findings have, therefore, lent scientific credence to the folkloric use of the herb as a laxative agent.."

In addition to the above, also in loperamide-induced constipated rats, intake of aqueous extract of Aloe ferox Mill. showed no toxicity to the kidney and liver even with of highest doses of 200 mg/kg bodyweight for 7 days. The study also insisted that extract is very effective in compared favorably with senokot, a recommended drug for the treatment of constipation.

Taking together, even though living with constipation is an irritable and uncomfortable experience but the use of herbal medicine in the treatment of constipation should be taken with care. People should start with small doses and increase the amount gradually.

Herbal Anise In Reduced Risk, Progression and Treatment of Colon Cancer

Anise may have a potential and substantial effect in reduced risk and progression and treatment of colon cancer, some scientists suggested.

Anise is a flowering plant of the species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belongings to the family Apiaceae native to Egypt and the Mediterranean region, used in traditional herbal medicine as a fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners and stomachic, anti-septic, anti-spasmodic,...

Chemical comstituents
Anethole, D-pinene, I-phellandrene, Alpha-terpineol, Safrol, Methyl chavicol, Resin, Shikimic acid, etc.

In the study of a green synthesis route to produce AgNPs by using an aqueous extract of Pimpinella anisum seeds (3 mM) on human neonatal skin stromal cells (hSSCs) and colon cancer cells (HT115) researchers found that under influence of Anise extract, AgNPs exhibited a strong cytotoxicity effect against hSSC cells and HT115 cells through inhibited the cell proliferation and induced apoptosis, in a dose-dependent manner, according to proliferation tests and cell viability assays.

Further differentiation also suggested that green-synthesized AgNPs exerted a significant effect against five infectious bacteria: Staphylococcus pyogenes (29213), Acinetobacter baumannii (4436), Klebsiella pneumoniae (G455), Salmonella typhi, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa which have been associated to increase risk of colon cancer.

After taking into account of other confounders, Dr. Alsalhi MS, the lead author suggested that
P. anisum-synthesized AgNPs as novel and cheap agents for eco-friendly nanosynthetical routes in treatment of colon cancer.

Moreover, the examine 3 commercially grown native herbs unique to Australia, Tasmannia pepper leaf (Tasmannia lanceolata R. Br., Winteracea; TPL), anise myrtle (Syzygium anisatum Vickery, Craven & Biffen, Myrtaceae; AM) and lemon myrtle (Backhousia citriodora F. Muell, Myrtaceae; LM) as well as a reference sample bay leaf (Laurus nobilis L., Lauraceae; BL), cytoprotective properties in colon adenocarcinoma (HT-29) cells, indicated that Anise demonstrated a potential effect in inhibited colon cancer cell line HT-29 with IC(50) through
increased antioxidant activity in reduced expression reactive oxygen species in initiation of cancer cell proliferation.

Additionally, Application of Anise promoted colon cancer cells death by activating caspase-3 enzyme in enhanced the killer T cells activity to initiate cancer cells apoptosis by killer T cells.

According to the Cytokinesis-block micronucleus cytome assay, application of Anise extract inhibited colon adenocarcinoma (HT-29) cells at concentration of 0.5 and 1.0mg/ml. without causing harm to the neighbor healthy cells

The above analysis were supported by the study in evaluated the effect of the volatile preparations of essential oils of the Greek plants Ocimum basilicum (sweet basil), Mentha spicata (spearmint), Pimpinella anisum (anise) and Fortunella margarita (kumquat) on model of human colon carcinoma.

Application of the herbal preparation expressed a significant activity in precipitated cytotoxicity effect in some infectious microorganisms associated to facilitation of the early stage of colon cancer.

According to the DPPH and ABTS assay, application of all herbal essential oils also increased expression of antioxidant in decreased free radical expression in elevated cancer cell in cycle division.

Dr. Fitsiou E, the lead author said, "All essential oil preparations exhibited a variable degree of antiproliferative activity, depending on the cancer model used, with the most potent one being sweet basil against an in vitro model of human colon carcinoma".

The information findings suggested that Anise may be considered as a functional herb for reduced risk, progression and treatment of colon cancer. However, intake of Anise extract should be taken with care as some supplement have been found to induced acute liver toxicity.

Cranberry, the Potential Cure of Urinary Tract Infections In Women

Urinary incontinence, a medical, psychological, social, economic, and hygienic problem, is a condition of loss of the bladder to control that can lead to mild or severe form of involuntary leakage of urine.

Involuntary urine leakage or urinary incontinence is frequent among elderly women, adult women, even among adolescent women.

According to the statistics provided by the Phoenix Physical Therapy, approximately 25 million adult Americans are living with some form of urinary incontinence in which 75-80% are women.

Believe it or not, about 17% of women and 16% men over 18 years old have overactive bladder(OAB) and an estimated 12.2 million adults have urge incontinence.

All types of urinary incontinence have been found to have a negative impact on the quality of life and daily activity.

Epidemiologically, symptoms of urinary incontinence depending on the types of conditions, including
* Stress incontinence
Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) has a significant impact on the quality of life for many women with symptoms of leakage of urine during physical activity, such as coughing, sneezing, laughing, exercising, due to weakening the sphincter pelvic muscles, supporting the bladder and urethra.

* Urge incontinence
Urge incontinence, also known as overactive bladder, is a condition of involuntary loss of urine and intense urge to urine due to bladder spasms or contractions with no apparent reasons.
Urge incontinence is also called overactive bladder.

* Overflow incontinence
Overflow incontinence is a condition of bladder inability to empty completely and the normal flow of urine is blocked that can lead to constantly urine dribbling.

* Mixed incontinence
Mixed incontinence is a condition of a combination of stress incontinence and urgency incontinence.

* Functional incontinence
Functional incontinence is a condition characterized by functioning difficulty that prevents one from urine normally as a result of mental or physical disabilities.

* Total incontinence
Total incontinence is a condition of a total loss of urine control due to certain conditions such as bladder fistula, injury to the urethra, and ectopic ureter.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of urinary tract infection, researchers examined the effect of the efficacy of a concentrated cranberry liquid blend, UTI-STAT with Proantinox, in female patients with a history of recurrent urinary tract infections (rUTIs).

The study included the oral administration of 15, 30, 45, 60, and 75 mL daily for 12 weeks to 28 women with a history of rUTIs <6 months. Only 23 women completed the study

According to the experimental results,
* The maximally tolerated dose of UTI-STAT was 75 mL/d, compared to the recommended dose of 60 mL/d.

* Only 2 (9.1%) out of 23 women report an rUTI, a markedly better rate than the historical data.

* Furthermore, at 12 weeks, the reduction in worry about rUTIs and increased QOL was a significant increase in the tested subjects measured by the Medical Outcomes Study short-form 36-item questionnaire.

* Moreover, the improvement of QOL was also confirmed by the lower American Urological Association Symptom Index.

* The cranberry liquid blend used in the study showed a good safety profile and tolerability in both pre- and postmenopausal women with a history of rUTIs.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The secondary endpoints demonstrated its effectiveness in reducing the incidence of rUTI and increasing QOL".

Taken altogether, cranberry liquid blend, UTI-STAT with Proantinox, may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of UTIs and rUTIs, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cinnamon, the number One Whole Herb Medicine in management of diabetes and its complications

Cinnamon is a spice derived from the inner bark of tree, native to South East Asia, of over 300 species of the genus Cinnamomum, belonging to the familyLauraceae, use in herbal and traditional medicine as anti-fungal and bacteria level, to improve reproductive organ, prevent flatulence and intestinal cramping, and to treat indigestion, diarrhea, bad breath, headache, migraine, etc.

Cinnamaldehyde, in the animal study found in the husk of Cicer arietinum L. Monosaccharide, exhibited antioxidant effects in reduced 29% of free radical expression and glucolipid levels through its action on multiple signaling pathways including cell cycle arrest and anti-pro-inflammatory property.

In vivo and in vitro, administered orally cinnamic acid and cinnamaldehyde lower acute blood glucose and improve glucose tolerance, through stimulating insulin secretion in isolated islets, according to the joint study led by the University of Karachi.

In a 16-week double-blind randomized control trial of 116 individuals with metabolic syndrome, dietary intervention groups with the administration of cinnamon [6 capsules (3 g) daily], significant improve all components of metabolic syndrome in a sample of Asian Indians in north India.

Dr. Gupta Jain S lead author of the researchers said,"Significantly greater decrease [difference between means, (95% CI)] in fasting blood glucose (mmol/L) [0.3 (0.2, 0.5) p = 0.001], glycosylated haemoglobin (mmol/mol) [2.6 (0.4, 4.9) p = 0.023], waist circumference (cm) [4.8 (1.9, 7.7) p = 0.002] and body mass index (kg/m2 ) [1.3 (0.9, 1.5) p = 0.001] was observed in the cinnamon group compared to placebo group".

Other researchers in the study of cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia) anti-diabetic property on obese patients also suggested, its effectiveness of increased the lipid storage capacity of white adipocytes and increased the fatty acid oxidation capacity may be due to activities of some other components of cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia) in the prevention of obesity-induced type II diabetes

Although cinnamon (Cinnamomum sp) has shown to express good glycemic control to patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), the intake of cinnamon supplements and whole herb should only be given by the qualified herbal doctor to achieve a greater health effect without side effects.

According to traditional Chinese medicine, cinnamon is a very hot herb, overdoses may induce toxicity.

Chaste tree berry, The Whole Herb Medicine for Treatment of Hyperprolactinemia Associated to Premenstrual Syndrome

Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, used in herbal medicine for thousands of years as an aphrodisiac herb and considered as Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts.

Hyperprolactinemia is a condition of elevated serum of prolactin which is the hormone in regulated
breast development and lactation during puberty and pregnancy, respectively.

High levels of prolactin have been found to associate with elevated symptoms in premenstrual syndrome women. Administration of herbal Chaste tree berry may ease the symptoms and treatment of mild and serve cases of PMS.

According to the Second Military Medical University, in the induced hyperprolactinemia SD rat models by administration of metoclopramide dihydrochloride (50 mg/kg, tid, ip, for 10 d), injection of casticin, a flavonoid isolated from Vitex rotundifolia in treatment group, exhibited the reduction of (10, 20, and 40 mg/kg, ip, for 7 d) serum prolactin levels by 33.9%, 54.3%, and 64.7%,.compared untreated control group.

Dr. YE Q, the lead author in the study said, casticin ameliorated the stimulation of pituitary cells with 17β-Estradiol (E2), a female sex hormone in prolactin secretion.

The study also found that casticin at doses of 0.1, 1, and 10 micromol/L, significantly inhibited the prolactin release stimulated by 17β-Estradiol (E2) in a concentration-dependent manner., through regulating the DNA expression of estrogen receptors in the activated sex hormone for the secretion of porcelain.

In the review of pharmacology and clinical indications of the effectiveness of chaste tree berry in PMS women. the University of Göttingen found that

1. The herbal extract consisted of a beneficial influence in most common premenstrual symptoms, indicated by double-blind placebo-controlled studies.
2. Numerous less rigidly controlled studies indicated that AC extracts reduced premenstrual mastodynia through inhibiting levels of prolactin through suppressed the stimulation of the mammary gland in response to stressful situations and during deep sleep phases.

Dr. Wuttke W said" The search for the chemical identity of the dopaminergic compounds resulted in isolation of a number of diterpenes of which some clerodadienols were most important for the prolactin-suppressive effects" and "dopaminergic compounds present in Vitex agnus castus are clinically the important compounds which improve premenstrual mastodynia and possibly also other symptoms of the premenstrual syndrome".

Taking together, Chaste tree berry may be beneficiary in reduced symptoms for women with PMS during the menstrual cycle, especially in hyperprolactinemia induced premenstrual breast pain and discomfort.
