Herbal Anise in Ameliorated Risk and Treatment of Functional Dyspepsia

Anise may have a potential and substantial effect in reduced risk and treatment of functional dyspepsia (FD), some scientists suggested.

Anise is a flowering plant of the species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belonging to the family Apiaceae native to to Egypt and the Mediterranean region, used in traditional herbal medicine as a fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners and stomachic, anti-septic, anti-spasmodic, ....

Chemical constituents
Anethole, D-pinene, I-phellandrene, Alpha-terpineol, Safrol, Methyl chavicol, Resin, Shikimic acid, etc.

Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a chronic disorder characterized by sensation and movement (peristalsis) in the upper digestive tract.

In the study of total of 180 patients attending the gastroenterology clinic, 107 ones with the diagnosis of postprandial distress syndrome according to Rome III criteria, randomly assigned to anise group of 47 patients received anise powders, 3 g after each meal (3 times/day) for 4 weeks and placebo group of 60 patients received placebo powders (cornstarch), 3 g after each meal (3 times/day) for 4 weeks researchers at the joint study lead by the Iran University of Medical Sciences indicated that

Anise treatment scored a significant improvement of all domains of SF-36(The Short Form (36) Health Survey) at week 12 in compared to placebo group, although both groups scored a similar at the baseline.

More specifically, at week 12, the mean of physical component score was 141 in placebo group and 251 in Anise treatment group compared to the baseline scores of 159 and 167, respectively and the mean mental component scores at weeks 12 was 135 in placebo group and 233 in anise group in compared to 172 and 165 respectively.

Domain of SF-36 completed by the patients includes vitality, physical functioning, bodily pain, general health perceptions, physical role functioning, emotional role functioning, social role functioning, and mental health, used widely in managed care organizations and Medicare for routine monitoring and assessment of care outcomes in adult patients. The lower the score is an indication of more disability in compared the higher the score of less disability.

The strong improvement of physical and mental scores in the Anise group in compared to the baseline and placebo may be associated to Anise in contributed to increase quality of life in patients of functional dyspepsia, through reduction of symptoms intensity.

Further differentiation, in a total of 107 patients attending the gastroenterology clinic, aged 18-65 years, diagnosed with PDS according to ROME III criteria, randomly assigned to group of 47 patients receive either received anise powders, 3 g after each meal (3 times/day) or placebo involved 60 patients and received placebo powders (corn starch), 3 g after each meal (3 times/day) for 4 weeks. researcher found that anise group expressed a significant effect in reduced all symptoms at weeks 4 and 12, but retching, nausea and vomiting in compared to control group and at the baseline.

The examine of the mean total scores of FD severity scale in anise group also expressed improvement at weeks 2, 4 and 12 in compared to insignificantly different of the two groups before the intervention.

Anise intervention also demonstrated a decreased significantly of mean severity scores of epigastric fullness, epigastric discomfort, epigastric burning/pain, early satiety, bloating, belching, and loss of appetite in compared to epigastric pain, epigastric fullness and belching increased significantly in the placebo group after intervention.

Moreover, Anise group also exerted a strong improvement of mean of pain score in compared to placebo, probably as a result of its anti spasmolytic feature.

However, after taking into account of other co-founders such as factors in causes of FD and anise effects on broad spectrum of pharmacological effects on GI, nervous, muscular and immune systems, researchers concluded that there are no surprise that Anise application showed a significant improvement of symptoms in patients with FD.

The information findings may be astonished, but the study also found to induce certain limitation, including limited the external validity of the results with a small sample size and shorted follow up periods.

Taking together, herbal Anise not only improve quality of life in patients with functional dyspepsia but may also be considered as adjunct therapy in combined with conventional standard medicine for reduced symptoms and treatment of functional dyspepsia.

Herbal Andrographis paniculata In Reduced Risk and Early Onset of Alzheimer's disease

Herbal Andrographolide processed an anti cognitive impairment effect in the prevention of the early stage of dementia, a study conducted by a renowned institute suggested.

Andrographis paniculata is also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka, used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia,...

Alzheimer's disease is a brain disorder correlated with major reductions of neurons to the respective target areas, named after German physician Alois Alzheimer. Alzheimer's destroys brain cells, causing cognitive modalities severe enough to affect language communication, memory, lifelong hobbies or social life. Alzheimer's gets worse over time, and it is fatal.

According to the joint study lead by the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, oral administrated natural product (Andrographolide, ANDRO) isolated from Andrographis paniculata in species Octodon degus (degu) exhibited the recovery of spatial memory and learning performance, through regulated phosphorylated tau protein and amyloid-beta aggregate maturation in cell survival in inducing Alzheimer's disease.

Dr., the lead author in the joint study said, "(Andrographolide, ANDRO) inhibited) neural damage associated with aging processes and the behavioral and neuropathological hallmarks of aging-related diseases such as AD"

Additionally, Andrographolide also displayed the inhibitory activity against forming of amyloid-beta (Aβ)42 through suppression of NF-κB, a protein in regulated cell survival and function of microglia in activated response to brain damage and immunological stimuli together with the reduction in the production of inflammatory cytokines.

In an animal study, mice treated with Andrographolide increased neural progenitor cell proliferation and the number of immature neurons in the hippocampus compared to age-matched control mice.

Moreover, ANDRO stimulated neurogenesis increasing the number of newborn dentate granule neurons in various parts of the brain.

The study also found that the efficacy of reduced symptoms and protect against the early onset of AD is the result of the stimulation of neurogenesis in the hippocampus.

Taking together, Andrographis paniculata is sure consisted of a therapeutic potential to protect the development of Alzheimer's disease through various mechanisms, however, intake of large amounts daily should be taken with care.

Green Tea EGCG, A Potent Iron Chelator in Regulation of Progression of Parkinson's disease

Green tea may be considered as a functional food and iron chelator in reduced risk and progression of Parkinson's disease, some scientists suggested

Iron chelation therapy is a primary and standard treatment for patients with iron overload.

Green tea is a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease, causing severe depletion of glutamatergic and dopaminergic inputs in the striatum.

Investigation of the green tea EGCG effect in risk and progression of PD has been found to associate with many mechanisms involved a number of aspects.

Application of metal chelation was found to ameliorate the expression of ROS in the induction of oxidative stress through a chain of reaction and precipitation of aggregation of alpha-synuclein and beta-amyloid peptides deposit in the brain, main leading causes to the onset of PD.

In iron abnormality PD subjects, oxidopamine, also known as 6-hydroxydopamine or 2,4,5-trihydroxyphenethylamine(6-OHD), a neurotoxic synthetic organic compound was found to disrupt iron metabolism, leading to overexpression of the iron induction of dyshomeostasis cause of iron toxicity and oxidative damage in dopaminergic neurons.

Green tea major polyphenol, (−)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate used in metal chelation, ameliorated iron-dependent free radicals located in the subcellular compartments and cellular membranes, through the effect in inhibited iron input and exhibited iron output in brain areas where it preferentially accumulates in neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Parkinsons' disease.

Further analysis of the neurotoxin 6-OHDA causes of iron unstable equilibrium, green extract GECG administration improved the function of hepcidin, a liver-derived hormone in regulated iron dyshomeostasis and gene expression of the iron metabolism through expressions of iron regulatory proteins (IRP1 and IRP2) in regulated the RNA level, between the transcription and the translation of the gene in expression of the iron homeostasis.

Indeed, In the differentiation of neurotoxin 6-OHDA induced iron dyshomeostasis has shown to increase oxidative stress in damage to neuron cells, green extract GECG effects demonstrated a significant inhibition of free radical and iron-free radical expression in the cellular membranes through the antioxidant activities and anti-inflammatory system and expression of nuclear factor-like 2(Nrf2) in stimulated production of antioxidant in protection against oxidative damage during injury and inflammation; heme oxygenase-1(HO-1) in increased production of superoxide dismutase and catalase against ROS and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPARγ) in regulated production of pro and anti-inflammatory cytokines and cytokines..

By reducing the overexpression of oxidative damage to neuron cells through regulation of iron-related factors as mentioned above, iron chelator EGCG can counteract these adverse effects and prevent the onset of PD.

Further study of the mechanism on disruption of iron metabolism by 6-OHDA in PD cell line N27, discovered that application of the iron chelator EGCG also disrupts the iron dyshomeostasis in N27 cells (dopaminergic neural cell line) induced by 6-OHDA through regulating iron transporters and regulators expression, such as DMT1 with function in mediation of the entry of dietary iron into these mucosal cells and TfR, a carrier protein for transferrin with function in import iron into the cell and regulated response to intracellular iron concentration and hepcidin, a central regulator in maintain iron homeostasis.

Dysregulation of hepcidin production results in a variety of iron disorders.

Additionally, in 6-OHDA induced neurotoxicity to cause PD, administration of green tea GECG also reduced the intracellular iron retention by decreasing the iron importers and increasing iron exporters, through regulation of the function of iron-regulated transporters, such as ferroportin.

Interestingly, there was a report suggested that the intervention of 3 cups of green tea daily for 3 months improved the antioxidant status and reduced oxidative damage in early PD patients without affecting their iron status.

The evidence revealed that green tea bioactive polyphenol, (−)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate may be considered as an iron chelator in the regulation of PD progression.

Chaste Tree Berry, The Valuable Chemotherapeutic Remedy Which Targets and Kills Cancer Cells

Chaste tree berry is found to exhibit a significant anti-cancer activity, a recent study by renowned study advised.

Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by cells growing and multiplying disordered and uncontrollable ways in our bodies.

In the late stage, the cancer cell may travel away from the originated site to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

As to today, researchers do not what causes cancers. Neither they understand why? people who have similar health conditions, one group is susceptible to cancer onset, while other does not.

However, researchers do not know that certain prevalent risk factors such as aging, excessive alcohol consumption, chemical carcinogenic substances, an unhealthy diet with a high amount saturated and trans fats, sugars,... and salts are associated with the onset of the disease.

Some researchers also suggested that people who have chronic inflammation, using hormone replacement and immunosuppression medicine are also at a higher risk of cancer development.

Certain infectious agents including hepatitis A, B, C and bacterium Helicobacter pylori infection also have the potential to induce a change of DNA of the healthy cells, a major cause of cancers,

Depending on the location of the cancer onset, patients may experience certain related symptoms such as heartburn or indigestion, and abdominal pain.in stomach cancer and swelling of all or part of a breast, nipple pain, and retraction in breast cancer.

However, most general symptoms that felt to almost all cancer patients include unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, lump and, swollen glands,

If you experience some general and localized symptoms of the above, please make sure that you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, used in herbal medicine for thousands of years as an aphrodisiac herb and considered as Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts.

According to the Tianjin Institute for Biomedicinal Research, in the evaluated the apoptosis-inducing effect of chaste tree berry, using observation under light microscope, flow cytometric analysis and agarose gel electrophoresis, vitexicarpin, a flavonoid found in chaste tree berry significantly inhibited proliferation of human cancer cells lines A2780(human ovarian carcinoma), HCT-15(human, colon, colorectal adenocarcinoma), HT-1080(fibrosarcoma cell line) and K562(Human chronic myeloid leukemia cells), depending to the concentration.

Dr. Wang HY the lead researcher in the study said, "Vitexicarpin induces apoptosis.... via mitochondria (in regulated cell metabolism)-controlled apoptotic pathway".

In support of the above analysis, the crude extract prepared with ethanol from dried ripened Vitex agnus-castus fruits also exerted a strong cytotoxic effects against cancer cell lines of human uterine cervical canal fibroblast (HCF), human embryo fibroblast (HE-21), ovarian cancer (MCF-7), cervical carcinoma (SKG-3a), breast carcinoma (SKOV-3), gastric signet ring carcinoma (KATO-III), colon carcinoma (COLO 201), and small cell lung carcinoma (Lu-134-A-H) cells.

The inhibition of the extract is attributed to the effect on cell death through apoptosis and increased intracellular oxidation in the tumor cells.

Other researchers suggested that the cytotoxic effects of Chaste tree berry may be involved in various aspects, including the JNK (apoptosis) pathway. as indicated in the new native lignan VB6 study.

Taking together, there is no doubt, that chaste tree berry may be considered as a valuable chemotherapeutic agent for the treatment of various types of cancer, depending on further evaluation.

Curcumin, the Single Bioactive Compound Which Processes Cardioprotective Property Against Heart Disease, Scientists Say

Scientists may have found a kitchen bioactive compound which processes cardio-protective properties, according to studies.

Cardioprotection is an action that contributes to the protection of heart integrity against damage or injury.

In other words, cardioprotection is a process in which substances or medicines are used including an herbal remedy to protect heart muscle tissues against ischemic insult and deoxygenation injury.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a class of conditions associated with the dysfunction of the arteries and heart.

Coronary artery disease caused by narrowing of the arteries, heart attack, abnormal heart rhythms, or arrhythmias and stroke is the most common type of cardiovascular disease found in the Western world.

Most common symptoms of CVD include persistent fatigue, shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, chest pain, and fainting.

If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, please make sure that you check with your doctor to rule out the CVD possibility.

The exact causes of cardiovascular diseases are unidentified. However, according to epidemiological studies, the most prevalent factors include aging, smoking. lack of exercise. unhealthy diet. obesity. high blood pressure and cholesterol, and family history.

Out of many risk factors, an unhealthy lifestyle is one of the major risk factors that cause the onset of CVD, some researchers suggested.

Dr. Haskell WL in the investigation of cardiovascular disease prevention and lifestyle interventions
said, "While heredity can be a major factor for some people, their personal health habits and environmental/cultural exposure are more important factors".

And, "Not smoking, being physically active, eating a heart-healthy diet, staying reasonably lean, and avoiding major stress and depression are the major components of an effective CVD prevention program. For people at high risk of CVD, medications frequently need to be added to a healthy lifestyle to minimize their risk of a heart attack or stroke, particularly in persons with conditions such as hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, or hyperglycemia. Maintaining an effective CVD prevention program in technologically advanced societies cannot be achieved by many high-risk persons without effective and sustained support from a well-organized health care system".

The results strongly suggested by lifestyle change has a strong implication in the prevention of CVD.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
With an aim to find a potent compound that processes cardioprotective effects, researchers investigated the cardioprotective effect of curcumin in NE-induced cardiac apoptosis according to the tested assays, curcumin protected the cardiomyocytes against apoptosis significantly.

Furthermore, the injection of curcumin also reverted to cardiomyocytes damage back to the normal physiological state.

In other words, curcumin protected the integrity of heart muscle cells against Norepinephrine (NE) in the induction of the onset of cardiomyopathy and heart failure.

Dr. Manghani C, the lead scientist said, "curcumin has the potential to act as a therapeutic agent for the attenuation of NE-induced cardiac cell death and modulation of apoptosis in H9c2 cardiomyocytes".

Taken altogether, turmeric may be considered a cardioprotective supplement for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Anise in Ameliorated Risk, Progression and Treatment of Chronic Inflammatory Systemic Diseases

Anise may have a potential and substantial effect in reduced inflammatory expression in induction of symptoms of swelling, redness pain, hot,..., some scientists suggested.

Anise is a flowering plant ofthe species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belongings to the family Apiaceae native to to Egypt and the Mediterranean region, used in traditional herbal medicine as fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners and stomachic, anti-septic, anti-spasmodic, ....

Chemical comstituents
Anethole, D-pinene, I-phellandrene, Alpha-terpineol, Safrol, Methyl chavicol, Resin, Shikimic acid, etc.

Inflammation is the natural reaction of immune system in protect our body against microorganism in the acute phase of infection.

Chronic inflammatory diseases are medical conditions including rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel diseases, and others typically stimulate a systemic response of the entire body.
According to the investigation of the essential oil of air-dried Illicium anisatum (Illiciaceae), obtained by hydrodistillation effect in LPS in induction of inflammation in RAW 264.7 cells, researchers at the Jeju Hi-Tech Industry Development Institute found that application of the essential oil demonstrated a moderate free radicals scavenging observed through the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) spectrophotometric method and anti-elastase activities in inhibited Alpha-1 antitrypsin in initiation of inflammation.

Application of Anise essential oil also displayed a significant effect in ameliorated the production of nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) by activated macrophages in facilitated production of inflammatory cytokines in response to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) injection in dose dependent manner.

These results suggested that essential oil isolated from anise exerts a strong antioxidant effect in inhibited oxidative stress through ameliorated production of reactive oxygen species in initiated chain reaction activities to precipitated expression of iNOS and COX-2 proteins in the production of nitric oxide and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) to facilitate localized inflammation and elicit pyrexia, pain sensation.

Furthermore, the application of essential oil also demonstrated cytotoxic effects in protected skin against inflammation observed by colorimetric MTT assays in human dermal fibroblast and keratinocyte HaCaT in skin cells.

Additionally, in the study of anethole with different doses of 125, 250, and 500 mg/kg on the development of paw oedema and mechanical hypernociception, researchers at the Universidade Estadual de Maringá indicated that the bioactive compound displays a therapeutic effect in exhibited anti-inflammatory effect through inhibited the levels of the cytokines tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), a cell-signaling protein (cytokine) involved in systemic inflammation in the acute phase of infection and interleukin-1β (IL-1β), a cytokines with function in regulation of immune and inflammatory responses to infections or sterile insults and interleukin-17 (IL-17), acytokine produced by a group of T helper cell in response to local inflammation and myeloperoxidase, a oxidative enzyme activity.

Interestingly, injection of anethole reduced inflammatory expression of paw edema without altering prostaglandin E2, plasma AST, and ALT levels. These results suggested that the bioactive compound did not cause any liver toxicity according to the histological profile of liver tissue.

The efficacy of Anise anethole isolated from star Anise in reduced risk of chronic inflammatory related diseases are supported by the study of BALB/C mice intraperitoneally administered anethole at dose of 62.5, 125, 250, or 500 mg/kg 1 h before intratracheal treatment with LPS (1.5 mg/kg) and sacrificed after 4 h conducted by the Dr. Kang P and colleagues.

The injection of anethole exerted a strong anti-inflammatory effect in inhibited the LPS in initiated the production of inflammatory mediators such as matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), with duo-function as inflammatory cytokine and an anti-inflammatory myokine, produced at the site of inflammation and in acute phase response and nitric oxide (NO) in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid.

The anti inflammatory effect of anethole also reduced in LPS-induced acute lung injury through suppressing the activation of NF-κB involved in cellular responses to stimuli such as stress, cytokines, free radicals by blocking IκB-α degradation. IκBα is a cellular protein with function in inhibited the NF-κB transcription factor.

Taken together, Anise and its major compound anethole may be considered as a natural anti-inflammatory and analgesic agent and combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of chronic inflammatory-related diseases.

Andrographis aniculata, The Best Whole Herb Medicine for Relieving Symptoms and Treatment of Upper Respiratory Tract Infection

Upper respiratory tract infections are the infection of the airway above the glottis or vocal cords, including the nose, sinuses, pharynx, and larynx, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, sinusitis, otitis media, etc,.

According to the joint study lead by the ilpakorn University in the review of the existing data of the literature and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials, Andrographis paniculata exerted a strong implication n the symptomatic treatment of uncomplicated upper respiratory tract infection by measuring the reduction in symptom severity scores.

In a total of 433 patients reported in three trials included in the statistical analysis, patients treated with a combination of Andrographis aniculata, Acanthopanax senticosus and Andrographis aniculata alone exhibited a significant improvement of 2.13 points and 10.85 points on the symptom severity score in compared placebo.

Dr. Poolsup N, the lead author said, "A. paniculata extract alone or in combination with A. senticosus extract may be more effective than placebo and maybe an appropriate alternative treatment of uncomplicated acute upper respiratory tract infection".

Furthermore, in the review to prevent the over-prescription of antibiotics and absence from work due to acute upper respiratory tract infection, A. paniculata is found to be more superior to placebo in alleviating the subjective symptoms of uncomplicated upper respiratory tract infection.
The study also indicated that all review trials scored at least three, out of a maximum of five, for methodological quality on the Jadad scale.

More importantly, the efficacy of A. paniculata in relieving symptoms of uncomplicated upper respiratory tract infection only induced generally mild and infrequent adverse effects.

Further in supporting the Andrographis aniculata's anti upper respiratory tract infection property, a total of 223 patients of both sexes randomized in two groups which received either KalmCold (200 mg/day) or placebo in a double-blind manner showed a promising result of A. paniculata in ameliorating symptoms of cough, expectoration, nasal discharge, headache, fever, sore throat, earache, malaise/fatigue and sleep disturbance from day 1 to day 3 of treatment in comparison to placebo group.

Additionally, The overall efficacy of extract of Andrographis paniculata was found to be 2.1 times (52.7%) higher than the placebo.

Taking together, there is no doubt that Andrographis aniculata has a potency used as a therapeutic agent for relieving symptoms and treatment of upper respiratory tract infection but intake of large doses and long term intake should be taken with care.
