Herbal Artichoke, the Best Hepatoprotecitve Functional Remedy, According to Studies

The hepatoprotective or liver protective effect is an action that maintains the liver's healthy functioning against any harmful toxins.

The liver is the largest internal organ in the human body and the only organ which can regenerate itself. The liver is the first line of the bodily toxin defense by filtering the blood comes from the digestive tract, before passing it to the rest of the body.

Furthermore, the liver also processes a function of detoxifying chemicals and metabolizes drugs.

Symptoms of liver diseases include jaundice, abdominal pain, and swelling, swelling in the legs and ankles, itchy skin, dark urine, and pale stool color, and a tendency to bruise easily.

If you experience some of the above symptoms, please make sure that you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of liver diseases.

Most cases of liver disease are associated with hepatitis viral infection and autoimmune diseases. However, excessive alcohol drinking has been found to induce alcoholic liver disease in many parts of Asia and America.

Dr. Suthat Liangpunsakul, the lead scientist, in the comparison of alcoholic disease in different regions wrote, "Alcoholic liver diseases (ALD) comprise a spectrum of clinical disorders and changes in liver tissue that can be detected by pathology analysis. These range from steatosis to more severe signs and symptoms of liver disease associated with inflammation, such as those observed in patients with alcoholic hepatitis or cirrhosis".

And, " Inter-individual differences in susceptibility to the toxic effects of alcohol have been extensively studied—they include a pattern of alcohol consumption, sex, environmental factors (such as diet), and genetic factors, which vary widely among different parts of the world. ALD is becoming more common in many parts of Asia but is decreasing in Western Europe".

The results clearly and strongly suggested that reducing intake of alcohol and following a healthy diet pattern is the best way to decrease the risk of liver diseases, including the ALD.

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detox agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

Scientists on finding a natural ingredient which processes liver protective effect evaluated the preventive effects of ethanolic extract from artichoke against acute alcohol-induced liver injury in mice.

Selected male mice were treated with an ethanolic extract of artichoke (0.4, 0.8, and 1.6 g/kg body weight) by gavage once daily before administrated up to 40% alcohol (12 mL/kg body weight) orally 1 h after artichoke treatment for 10 consecutive days.

Injection of artichoke extract not only significantly prevented elevated levels of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, the liver oxidative stress markers but also reduced the levels of triglyceride, total cholesterol.

Artichoke treatment mice also restored the levels of antioxidant enzymes which were reduced by the injection of alcohol.

According to the immunohistochemical analysis, artichoke also suppressed the levels of toll-like receptor (TLR) 4 which plays a critical role in the production of several pro-inflammatory, antiviral, and anti-bacterial cytokines and protein, nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) associated with liver cells apoptosis in liver tissues.

The results indicated a liver protective activity in artichoke was attributed to the inhibition of the pro-inflammatory proteins in acute alcohol-induced liver injury mice.

In order to reveal more information about the liver protective effect of artichoke, researchers examined the herbal medicine against liver fibrosis, the main pathology of schistosomiasis and its complications are the major cause of death in infected cases.
Mice selected to the study infected with Schistosoma mansoni (S. mansoni) were divided into 5 groups. The first three groups were given artichoke leaf extract (ALE), ALE + praziquantel (PZQ) and PZQ respectively. The 4th was a positive control and the 5th was the negative control group.and were compared to PZQ.

Injection of ALE and ALE + praziquantel (PZQ) caused significant reduction of granuloma diameter, improvement of liver functions and liver fibrosis.

Furthermore, ALE induced statistically significant changes in hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) distribution.

Moreover, ALE also reduced granuloma size by increasing HSCs recruitment inside granuloma and limited liver fibrosis by their inhibition in the peri- and inter-granuloma liver tissue.

Unfortunately, although, the herbal extract exerted a strong liver protective activity, it but failed to treat S. mansoni infection.

Taken altogether, artichoke may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of liver disease, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Anise, The Natural Antibiotic Alternative With No Side Effects, Scientists Found

Herbal Anise may have a synergistic antibacterial activity effect in reduced risk and treatment of infection, some scientists suggested.

Bacteria are microorganisms consisted of consist of a single cell with a simple internal structure. harmless. most of them are harmless to humans and can be distinguished by the nature of their cell walls, by their shape, or by differences in their genetic makeup.

Bacteria reproduced through cell cycle division. in other words, they multiply by making a copy of the DNA and grows large in size by doubling its cellular content. before splitting it into two identical "daughter" cells.

Bacteria can also be beneficial to human health as they help to maintain the orderly functioning of the digestive system such as digesting the food that the stomach can not digest, producing the vitamins for our body needs, improving the immune function and most importantly, ensuring the optimal digestive functioning.

Some infectious bacteria are dangerous to human health. As they can divide quickly, after entering the body. Many produce chemicals called toxins, which not only fence off the attack from the immune system but also can damage.

Due to antibiotics overuse over a last 3 decades, some infected bacteria have developed antibiotic resistance, a phenomenon where infectious bacteria are no longer susceptible to previously effective antibiotics.

Synergistic antibacterial activity is a condition in which the whole herb application exerts a greater effect than the sum of individual ingredients combined.

Anise is a flowering plant of the species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belonging to the family Apiaceae native to Egypt and the Mediterranean region, used in traditional herbal medicine as a fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners and stomachic, antiseptic, anti-spasmodic,...

Chemical constituents
Anethole, D-pinene, I-phellandrene, Alpha-terpineol, Safrol, Methyl chavicol, Resin, Shikimic acid, etc.

In the comparison of the antibacterial effect against a wide range of foodborne Gram-positive and -negative bacteria, yeasts and molds by an agar well diffusion method in five different varieties of Ocimum basilicum L. plants, including Anise, researchers found that application Anise essential oil exhibited a strong effect in decreased expression the acid-tolerant microorganisms including Lactobacillus curvatus and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, synergistically, compared to mixtures of the predominant components of pure linalool and methyl chavicol.

In a tomato juice medium, Anise oil injection also exerted antibacterial activity at doses of 0·1% and 1% Anise oil, against Lact. curvatus and S. cerevisiae, respectively.

The inhibitory effect of Anise oil was substantially higher, comparison to the mixtures of the predominant components of pure linalool and methyl chavicol, against the acid-tolerant organisms, Lactobacillus curvatus and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, examined in broth by an indirect impedance method.

Furthermore, essential oil extracted from the Anise seed used alone or combined with essential oil extracted from aerial parts of Thymus vulgaris, also displayed a significant effect in inhibiting nine Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogenic bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, Proteus Vulgaris, Proteus mirabilis, Salmonella typhi, Salmonella typhimurium, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Pimpinella anisum essential oils methanol extracts at doses of MIC 15.6 and 62.5mug/ml) were particularly effective against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, and Proteus vulgaris.

Some researchers suggested that Anise antibacterial effect probably was attributed to the bioactive major compound anethole in the modulation of the immunity.

According to some studies, application of essential oil in mice model, trans-anethole and estragole, a derivative of anethole improved the host immunity by reducing the expression of hypersensitivity response and increasing the numbers of white blood cells(leucocytes) in the circulatory system with function in counteracting foreign substances and diseases.

Further differentiation also found that trans-anethole improved the immune function in stimulating the transformation of B cells into plasma cells in the produced and secreted antibodies whether a foreign substance was scented.

Additionally, anethole isolated from Anise also exhibited a strong effect in protecting the immunity against mice fed with cyclophosphamide to induced chemo suppression of immunity.

Indeed, an Anise essential oil demonstrated a significant effect in the immune responses by modulating the levels of immune-inflammatory factors interleukins (IL6, IL8, and IL10) and tumor necrosis factor(TNFα ) against infectious microorganism in initiating the acute phase of infection.

Additionally, in animal-tested with E. acervulina-infected, the application of essential oil isolated from Anise also increased the expression of lymphocytes in the infectious intestinal area.

Taken all altogether, the findings suggested that Anise essential oil including the bioactive phytochemical anethole may be used as an antibacterial agent, particularly in the externally acute phase of infection.

Herbal Ashwagandha, the Potential Anti Colon Cancer Functional Remedy

Cancer is a group of chronic diseases caused by irregular cell growth in the tissue of a specific organ due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Colon cancer is a chronic condition characterized by uncontrolled cell growth in the colon tissue.

Most cases of colon cancer start with the alternation of cells DNA in the cells on the surface of the inner lining colon tissue before proliferating into deeper tissues to form a tumor through abnormal cell cycle division.

The colon formed a part of the digestive system is involved in the absorption of water from the small bowel contents and broken down of certain materials in the feces into substances of which some of them to be reabsorbed and reused by the body.

Colon cancer is relatively very common, slowly growing and progressing cancer.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, colorectal cancer including colon and rectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States.

In 2019, 101,420 people in the US will be diagnosed with colon cancer.

Most common symptoms of colon cancer are a persistent change in your bowel habits, including diarrhea or constipation, blood in your stool, persistent abdominal discomforts, such feeling that your bowel doesn't empty completely accompanied by some general symptoms shared by other types of cancer.

The exact causes of colon cancer are unknown. However, out of many risk factors associated with the onset of the disease, aging may have a strong implication involved in cancer, as most cases of the colon are found in the older population.

Dr. O Ng and colleagues in a joint study led by the University of Nottingham wrote, "The prevalence of colorectal cancer is increasing in the elderly. We examined the treatment and outcomes in our institution of patients aged over 85 years with proven colorectal adenocarcinoma".

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean. The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of colon cancer with no side effect, researchers examined the effects of Withaferin-A, a withanolide derived from the leaf extract of W. somnifera, anti-colon tumor activity.

On human colorectal cancer (HCT116) cells, the phytochemical not only inhibited the proliferation but also the migration of the tested cancer cells in a concentration-dependent manner.

In other words, Withaferin-A exhibited cell cycle arrest and blocking cancer cell spreading.

Furthermore, the administration of withaferin-A attenuated the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines activated by protein (STAT3) associated with the development and progression of colon cancer.

On HCT116 cells xenograft tumors and generated in Balb/c nude mice, withaferin-A showed a strong activity in which a significant decrease in the volume and weight of tumors, compared to untreated controls.

Based on the finding, researchers said, "The present study suggests that withaferin-A holds the potential to be developed as a small molecule inhibitor of STAT3 for the treatment of HCT116".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of colon cancer in vitro and Vivo.

Arnica, The Functional Herb Which Alleviates Symptoms and Treatment of Osteoarthritis With No Side Effects, Scientists Revealed

Arnica may have a positive and therapeutic effect in reduced risk and treatment of breast cancer, some scientists suggested.

Breast cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the breast tissue.

According to general belief, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime.

The causes of the breast are unknown. Researchers do not know why some women are susceptible to DNA alternated in healthy breast tissue while others do not. Truly, many women who have risk factors never develop breast cancer.

Some researchers suggested that family history, early puberty and late onset of menopause, having high breast density, excessive alcohol drinking,.... and aging are associated to increase the risk of breast cancer

Furthermore, women who have inherited the gene mutation from the parent, have previous cancer,..and have taken certain medications such as diethylstilbestrol (DES) are also associated with risk of the disease.

Today modern technology is developed to detect breast cancer in an early stage, but self-examination is still one of the best methods to catch cancer before they can become invasive.

The survival rates of breast cancer have also increased, and the number of deaths associated is steadily decreasing, largely due to factors that women are more aware of the early onset of the disease.

If you experience of some symptoms such as breast lump, nipple changes, breast change in the size, shape, inverted nipple, breast skin peeling, scaling, flaking of the pigmented area of skin surrounding the nipple, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility

Arnica is a herbaceous species, genus perennial, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The plant has been used in herbal medicine for centuries to treat strains, sprains, and bruises.

The ingredients
Helenalin, chamissonolid, Sesquiterpene lactone, lignans of the furofuran, dibenzylbutyrolactone, dibenzylbutyrolactol types, pinoresinol, epipinoresinol, phillygenin, matairesinol, nortrachelogenin, and nortracheloside, six dibenzylbutyrolactol derivative.

According to the evaluation of cytotoxic chemotherapeutic agents with efficacy without inducing adverse effects from major compounds extracted from Arnica helenalin and to exam whether the compound activity was maximized by encapsulation in β-cyclodextrin nanoparticle, application of β-cyclodextrin nanoparticle alone exerted a significantly inhibitory property against breast cancer cells.

β-Cyclodextrin (β-CD) is a cyclic oligosaccharide comprising seven D-glucopyranoside units, linked through 1,4-glycosidic bonds.

Interestingly, when helenalin was encapsulation in β-cyclodextrin nanoparticle, the combination demonstrated a significant effect in the induction of breast cancer cell cytotoxicity in compared to administration of helenalin alone.
These results suggested that certain compounds in β-cyclodextrin may have potential in stimulated and enhanced the helenalin action through some unknown interacted mechanisms.

In T47D breast cancer cell line, injection of β-cyclodextrin- helenalin complexes inhibited the preoperative effect in the prevented expanse of the colony in a dose-dependent manner.

Some researchers suggested that the induction of breast cancer cell apoptosis and proliferation may be attributed to helenalin antioxidants activity in restricting the growth of cells through its stimulation of ROS in facilitated cell death.
More importantly, the application of β-cyclodextrin- helenalin also improved the ratio of antioxidant and ROS in the infectious cell line. These results were observed in the expression of the telomerase gene through the r q-PCR.

Truly, the length of the terminal transferase was shortening in the treated cell lines compared to untreated control.

Furthermore, application of Arnica also expressed a profound effect in reduced blood and serum volumes and pain, and the presence of bruising or hematomas during the period of drainage.

According to study of 53 women, undergoing unilateral total mastectomy, selected from 2012 to 2014 randomly assigned to A. Montana or placebo and followed up for 5 days, conducted by the Niguarda Ca' Granda Hospital, Milan, Arnica treatment of group displayed a strong reduction of the of mean volume of blood and serum collected in drainages in compared to control group observed by the per-protocol analysis.

Analysis of the questionnaire returned from the patients, researchers found that patient weight showed a statistically significant difference in favor in the use of Arnica, according to the regression model including treatment, volume collected in the drainage on the day of surgery.

Moreover, the blood and serum volumes collected on the day of surgery and the following days were significantly lower with Arnica at days 2 in compared to untreated patients.

Dr.Sorrentino L , the lead author, after taking into account other co and confounders said, " reduce post-operative blood and seroma collection in women undergoing unilateral total mastectomy".

The findings suggested that Arnica and its major bioactive helenalin may be used as a secondary herbal treatment or combination with standard medicine for the treatment of breast cancer and speeding up recovery after post total mastectomy.

Intake of herbal supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent acute liver toxicity.

Topical Aloe Vera, The best Whole Food Medicine for Treatment of Burn

Good news for people working in the kitchen, topical Aloe vera may be the next generation of herbal medicine for the treatment of burn and promoted burn healing.

Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan. It has become very popular for commercial cultivation due to enormous health benefits, used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of diseases, including wound, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes, and elevated cholesterol, etc.

According to review of the database of studies in MEDLINE, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, HealthSTAR, DARE, South-East Asia Database, Chinese Databases, and several Thai local Databases (1918-June 2004), Aloe vera has found to process a significant effect for burn wound healing with 8.79 days shorter in compared to control group.

Dr. Maenthaisong R, the lead researcher said, " cumulative evidence tends to support that aloe vera might be an effective intervention used in burn wound healing for first to second-degree burns".

In fact, the efficacy of topical Aloe vera gel in the treatment of thermal burns is the result of its chemical constituents in the exhibition of different pharmacological actions.

Other studies support the efficacy of Aloe Vera for treatment of thermo burn, conducted by the Chulalongkorn University Hospital, in a total of 48 male Wistar rats equally divided into 4 groups as follows: sham controls, untreated burn-wound rats, those treated with once-daily application of normal saline (NSS) and those treated with once-daily application of lyophilized Aloe vera gel, topical administration of aloe vera gel after 14 days, showed an arteriolar diameter increased up to normal condition and the healing area of the Aloe vera-treated wound was far better than other experiment groups.

There is no doubt that topical aloe vera may be used as a potential herbal medicine for the treatment of both anti-inflammation and wound healing applied on a second-degree burn wound.

Herbal Artichoke, the Potential Anti Lymphoma Natural Remedy, According to Researchers

Lymphoma originated in the lymphatic system is a type of cancer that affects the white blood cells lymphocytes of the immune system.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphomas are the most common types of lymphoma

According to statistics provided by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, in the US, approximately over 1,30,000 people are either living with or are in remission from, leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma, causing the death of over 9% of all cancer death in 2018.

60 years of age and over, weakened immune system, previous exposure to toxic chemicals, previous chemotherapy or radiation therapy are some of the most common prevalent risk factors of lymphoma.

Interestingly, most people with some of the above risk factors have never developed lymphoma.

Some researchers suggested that people infected by the HIV virus are also at an increased incidence of the disease, probably due to immune suppression.

Dr, K L Grogg, in the concern of immune deficiency in patients infected by the HIV virus in the risk of lymphoma said, The incidence of lymphoma in patients with HIV infection greatly exceeds that of the general population.

And, "The increased risk for lymphoma appears related to multiple factors, including the transforming properties of the retrovirus itself, the immunosuppression and cytokine dysregulation that results from the disease, and, most importantly, opportunistic infections with other lymphotropic herpes viruses such as Epstein–Barr virus and human herpesvirus 8".

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural chemo compound for the treatment of lymphoma examined the anticancer activity of the sesquiterpene lactone, the major constituent of the artichoke leaves extracts.

The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of cynaropicrin, a major compound from the sesquiterpenes on the grown of a number of leukocyte cancer cell lines.
Injection of cynaropicrin exerted a potently effect in inhibiting the proliferation of leukocyte cancer cell lines, such as U937.

According to the flow-cytometric assay, cynaropicrin displayed a strong inhibition against the cancer cell line by exhibiting the expression of free radical cytotoxic effect.

The cancer cell apoptosis in the cell cycle arrest at G1/S phase observed by the DNA fragmentation and morphological analyses in U937.

Use the combination of antioxidants such as l-cysteine and N-acetyl-l-cysteine, reactive oxygen species scavengers showed to reduce the cytotoxic activity of the cynaropicrin against U937.

These results clearly suggested that the mediation of reactive oxygen species and protein associated with the pro-apoptotic activity were attributed to the effect of cynaropicrin in the inhibition of lymphoma cancer.

Dr. and colleagues after taking into account co and confounders wrote in the final report, "cynaropicrin may be a potential anticancer agent against some leukocyte cancer cells such as lymphoma or leukemia, through pro-apoptotic activity".

Taken altogether, artichoke processed abundantly bioactive compound sesquiterpene lactone cynaropicrin may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of lymphoma, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

How to Prevent Over Production of Free Radicals in Your Body For Optimal Health

Anise may have a potential and substantial antioxidant effect in balancing the ratio of antioxidant and free radical in the body, some scientists suggested.

Free radicals are the unstable and uncharged molecule which are highly reactive by having an unpaired valence electron.

Some researchers suggested that due to the nature of free radical high reactivity, free radicals have the potential to be extremely harmful contaminants and extremely powerful chemical tools for the treatment of diseases through inducing cytotoxicity.

Free radicals exert their powerful reactivity through a chain reaction. Without inhibiting the unpaired electrons by antioxidants, the chain reaction can go on forever.

Radical chain reactions are processed in three distinct phases: initiation, propagation, and termination.

Contrastly, an antioxidant is a molecule with a function to inhibit oxidation, especially in the counteracting oxidative stress caused by the overproduction of free radicals.

Researchers suggested that antioxidants found in the plant not only exert the activity in the inhibition of free radicals but also stimulating the antioxidant enzymes in the host body.

Interestingly, in some cancer cells in vitro, application of antioxidants found in the plant such as green tea not only protect the healthy cells of the host but also increase the function of free radicals in killing cancer cell through cytotoxic activity.

One theory suggested if we can maintain a healthy ratio of antioxidants and free radicals in the body, we may live a life of diseases free.

Anise is a flowering plant of the species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belongings to the family Apiaceae native to Egypt and the Mediterranean region, used in traditional herbal medicine as a fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners and stomachic, antiseptic, anti-spasmodic,...

Chemical constituents
Anethole, D-pinene, I-phellandrene, Alpha-terpineol, Safrol, Methyl chavicol, Resin, Shikimic acid, etc.

In the study of the effect of EtOAc soluble extract (PBet) isolated from Anise researchers found that at dose of PBet (0.5-2mg/mL), Anise extract demonstrates a protective effect of Bel-7404 cells from free radical Hydrogen peroxide H(2)O(2) and prevent free radical in inducing cell damage through scavenging of intracellular ROS.

Further analysis also suggested that bioactive compounds such as β-sitosterol in the EtOAc soluble extract (PBet) improved the antioxidant status of the extract and stimulated the production of the host natural antioxidant profile in the inhibition of lipid peroxidation.

At a dose of 0,03 - 12g/kg BW, the extract expressed no acute toxic effect observed by the bone marrow polychromatic erythrocyte micronucleus test in determined the cytogenetic damage.

Dr. Lu J, the lead author, after taking into account other co-founders suggested that "PBet could be considered as a safe functional food with antioxidant activities".

Further evaluation of the expression of antioxidants in the inhibited free radical reactive activity in the development of degenerative diseases, researchers at the joint study led by the West Bengal State University, in compared antioxidant capacities of extracts of some commonly used in Indian spices (anise, cardamom, Ceylon cinnamon, and clove) along with their purified components (anethole, eucalyptol, cinnamaldehyde, and eugenol, respectively) indicated that anethole isolated from Anise displays a comparative antioxidant capacities in free radical scavenging activity against some ROS species.

Moreover, Anise spices as a whole are more potent antioxidants than their purified active components, and at higher concentrations, purified components are more toxic than their respective crude extract.

The above illustration was supported by the study in the analysis of the antioxidant and protective effects of Pimpinella anisum (P. anisum) against gentamicin (GM) in the induction of drug
nephrotoxicity.
In the total of 40 male Wistar rats divided into four groups: control and sham administrated normal saline orally and intraperitoneally (i.p.), gentamicin (GM) group received 100 mg/kg bw/day i.p., GM and ethanolic extract of P. anisum with oral dose of 300 mg/kg bw/day for 8 days, researchers suggested that application of Anise reduces kidney and liver toxicity and inhibits overexpression of reactive oxygen species in initiating chain reaction in oxidative stress the facilitation, and normalizes the levels of excretion of sodium and potassium induced by free radical expression, caused by injection of gentamicin (GM).
All inhibitions were observed through the expression of levels of creatinine, associate to kidney damage and blood urea nitrogen (BUN), an indication of liver toxicity and Malondialdehyde MDA, an oxidative stress marker and the absolute excretion of sodium and potassium.

Interestingly, compared to the control, the application of Anise at 300 mg/kg bw/day significantly reduced the plasma concentrations of renal function markers (serum creatinine) in the group receiving GM (P < 0.05) and protected them against GM in inducing tubule damage.

Dr. Changizi-Ashtiyani S, the lead author suggested that,  "potential therapeutic impact of P. anisum to attenuate GM-induced nephrotoxicity. Therefore, the simultaneous use of the ethanolic extract of P. anisum during GM administration is recommended to reduce its nephrotoxicity effects".

Taken all together, the findings suggested that Anise may be considered a functional herb in the improved antioxidant status against ROS and drug-induced toxicity through its bioactive compounds by stimulating the production of natural antioxidants in the host.

However, intake of Anise extract in high concentration should be taken with exceptional care as liver acute toxicity has been reported by some medical literature.
