Aloe vera may be the next potential topical medicine used for the treatment of oral HSV-1 infections without exerting any toxicity, the study by the renowned institute suggested.
Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan. It has become very popular for commercial cultivation due to its health benefits, used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of diseases, including wound, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes, and elevated cholesterol, etc.
Herpes simplex is a contagious disease caused by human herpesvirus 1 and 2, the 2 members of the herpes virus family.
According to the joint study lead by the Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, gel extraction with concentrations of Aloe vera (0.2, 0.5, 1, 2, and 5%) exhibited anti-HSV-1 activity assessed by plaque reduction assay.
Dr. Rezazadeh F, the lead author of the study said, "The inhibitory effect of various concentrations of Aloe vera was observed one hour after the Vero cell was infected with HSV-1. However, there was no significant difference between the two serial concentrations".
Acemannan, an extracted polysaccharide from Aloe vera, has shown to exhibited antiviral activities against herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), in vivo through activation of immune responses.
A combination with azidothymidine(an antiretroviral medication) and acyclovir(an antiviral medication) administration acted synergistically to inhibit the replication of HIV-1 and herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), respectively.
In fact, the effects of the combination against U1 cells infected with HIV-1, are also attributed to the function of blocking the potentiate of virus replication without inducing toxicity.
Although Aloe Vera has shown to inhibit the replication of HSV-1 activity through its antiviral property, a more precise understanding of the biological activities is necessary before developing Aloe vera as a pharmaceutical source.

Herbal Artichoke Enhanced Nonpathogenic Intestinal Microflora for the Promotion of Digestive Health
Gut microbiota or gastrointestinal microbiota is the complex community of over 10 trillions microorganisms living in our digestive tracts.
Use of antibiotics, diet, drugs, may alter the composition of the microbiota.
Under the normal condition, in healthy individuals, gut microbiota plays a critical role in the modulation of the immune, metabolic and neurobehavioral traits.
In Immunity, gut microbiota stimulates the immune system protective responses to pathogens and the maintenance of tolerance to innocuous antigens.
In metabolism, gut microbiota improve glucose tolerance, mipoprotein profile and atherosclerotic plaque development.
In neurological disease, gut microbiota improved the neuropsychiatric conditions, including depression, autism and Parkinson’s disease.
In other words, the balanced gut microbiota has a strong impact on the protection of our body against abnormal metabolism, infectious diseases, and loss or death of neurons in the initiation of diseases of the central nervous system.
Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.
The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as liver protective and detoxified agents, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.
Researchers on the finding a natural therapeutics for the improvement of nonpathogenic intestinal microflora investigated the dried Jerusalem artichoke(JA) effects on microflora and short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) in the hindgut.in male pigs 1 week fed with JA before slaughter.
The study included 5 experimental groups (n = 11) given different dietary treatments 7 days before slaughter: negative control (basal diet), positive control (basal diet + 9% chicory-inulin), basal diet + 4.1% Jerusalem artichoke, basal diet + 8.1% Jerusalem artichoke and basal diet + 12.2% Jerusalem artichoke.
Increasing levels of Jerusalem artichoke to entire male pigs reduced skatole, a mildly toxic compound in the colon and in feces and level of Clostridium perfringens, type of bad bacterias in the gut in both colon and rectum.
Furthermore, injection of JA also increased the total amount of SCFA (linear, P < 0.05), acetic acid (linear, P < 0.05) and valerianic acid (linear, P < 0.01) produced by the friendly bacteria in your gut in feces.
JA improved intestinal microflora by reducing skatole levels through decreasing in C. perfringens and the increase in SCFA with a subsequent reduction in pH.
Taken altogether, artichoke may be considered a functional formula for the improvement of the intestinal microflora, with no side effects, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bromelain Promotes and Removes Eschar In Burn Wounds, Human Trials Show
Eschar is a dry, dark scab of dead skin associated with a certain skin condition.
Most cases of eschar are associated with burning or cauterizing that stop bleeding, or prevent the spread of infection.
Most common causes of eschar are burned, a condition that causes severe skin damage. Burn wound can recover without serious health consequences in a few days or weeks depending on the size of the burns.
Burns depending on the severity can be classified into
* First-degree burns affect only the epidermis or outer layer of the skin accompanied by the symptoms of is red, painful, dry, and with no blisters on the affected site.
* Second-degree burns affect the epidermis and part of the dermis layer of the skin accompanied by the symptoms of red, blistered, and swollen and painful on the affected site.
* Third-degree burns not only to destroy the epidermis and dermis but also damage the underlying bones, muscles, and tendons accompanied by no symptoms due to completely damage of the nerves in the area.
Believe it or not, 10 percent burns of a child's body and 15 to 20 percent burns of an adult's body are considered to be major injuries and require medical attention and hospitalization.
The most common types of burns are* Thermal burns caused by external heat sources.
* Radiation burns caused by prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays of the sun or radiotherapy.
* Chemical burns caused by acids, alkalies, detergents, or solvents.
* Electrical burns caused by electrical current.
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of diabetic foot burns, researchers examined the effect of bromelain-based enzymatic debridement with Nexobrid® (Mediwound) on surgical tangential excision of deep dermal and full-thickness burns.
According to the retrospective case series that identified four patients with diabetic foot burns,
Nexobrid® debridement showed significant activity in the development of further eschar and deepening of their wounds a few days after NexoBrid was applied.
In other words, Nexobrid® debridement protects the skin against the formation of dry, dark scab or falling away of dead skin due to surgical tangential excision of deep dermal and full-thickness burns.
Based on the finding, Dr. Berner JE, the lead scientist said, "We would recommend judicious use of this new product in patients with diabetic foot wounds".
Moreover, the joint study led by the University of Heidelberg based on the mutual experience of applying enzymatic debridement in more than 500 adult and pediatric patients by the consensus panelists suggested that the degree of consensus was remarkably high, with a unanimous consensus in 88.2% of statements, and the lowest degree of consensus of 70% in only 3 statements.
More precisely, most patients support the use of Nexobrid® debridement for the treatment of removed eschar in burn wounds and reduced blood loss.
After taking other factors into account, Dr. Hirche C, the lead researcher wrote, "This consensus document may serve as a preliminary guideline for the use of enzymatic debridement with user-oriented recommendations until further evidence and systematic guidelines are available".
Taken altogether, bromelain used alone or combined with conventional medicine may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of eschar in burn wounds, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Bilberry, Protects the Heart and Blood Vessels Against Cardiovascular Diseases
Scientists may have found a whole fruit for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, according to studies.
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a group of conditions associated with blood vessels and the heart.
According to the statistics provided by the World Health Organization, cardiovascular diseases are the number 1 cause of death globally. Approximately, 17.9 million people died from CVDs in 2016, representing 31% of all global deaths.
The most common risk factors associated with CVD are an unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, smoking, and excessive alcohol drinking.
Patients with CVD mostly were found to have some intermediate conditions such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose and being overweight and obese.
Most common symptoms of CVD include persistent chest pain, chest tightness, chest pressure and chest discomforts, and conditions associated with lower blood circulation due to narrowing blood vessels such as shortness of breath, numbness, weakness or coldness in your legs or arms.
Some people before having a CVD may also experience symptoms of pain in the neck, jaw, throat, upper abdomen or back.
If you experience some of the symptoms aforementioned, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.
Some researchers suggested that people inherited the mutated gene from the parent are also at a higher risk of CVD.
Dr. Sunil K. Nadar the lead scientist in the investigation of the genetics of CVD wrote, "The term ‘cardiovascular disease’ (CVD) encompasses a wide spectrum of diseases—including ischaemic heart disease (IHD), congenital structural heart disease and various inherited arrhythmias and cardiomyopathies—each of which has its own etiology and pathogenesis".
And, "Our present understanding seems to suggest that it is not one gene on its own that leads to CVD, but rather an interaction between the effects of various genes".
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
In the differentiation of natural compounds for the treatment of cardiovascular disease (CVD), researchers in a joint study led by the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra examined the effects of regular consumption of bilberries on CVD risk reduction.
Women (n=25) and men (n=11) included in the study were asked to consume 150 g of frozen stored bilberries 3 times a week for 6 weeks.
At the end of the study, the consumption of bilberries showed a significant decrease of risk factors associated with the onset of CVD, including total cholesterol (P=.017), LDL-C (P=.0347), TG (P=.001), glucose (P=.005), albumin (P=.001), γ-glutamyltransferase (P=.046), and a positive increase in HDL-C (P=.044).
In men, larger favorable changes were found in total cholesterol, glucose, albumin, aspartate aminotransferase, γ-glutamyltransferase, and HDL-C (P=.009) compared to women.
Interestingly, the injection of bilberry over the period was not induced favorable change but an increase of LDL-C.
Dr, Habanova M, the lead scientist after taking into co and confounders, said, "the regular intake of bilberries can be important to reduce CVD risk, by decreasing LDL-C/TG and increasing HDL-C".
Furthermore, in order to find more information about the bilberry anti CVD effects, researchers investigated the effect of bilberry juice on serum and plasma biomarkers of inflammation and antioxidant status in subjects with elevated levels of at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD).
The randomized controlled trial included participants consumed either bilberry juice (n = 31) or water (n = 31) for 4 weeks.
Injection of bilberry juice resulted in a significant decrease in plasma concentrations of C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin (IL)-6, IL-15, and monokine induced by INF-gamma (MIG).
However, an increase in the plasma concentration of tumor nuclear factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) involved in the acute phase of systematic inflammation was also observed in the bilberry group.
Bilberry juice exerted a significant effect in modulating the protein associated with pro-inflammatory cytokines, through activation of a transcription factor, a crucial protein (nuclear factor- kappa B (NF-kappaB)) associated with chronic inflammatory diseases.
Interestingly, injection of bilberry juice did not induce the change of other clinical parameters, including oxidative stress or antioxidant status.
The findings suggested that bilberry reduced risk CVD by modulating the inflammation processes.
Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease with no side effects, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Ashwagandha inhibits the Risk of Pancreatic Cancer
Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells growing and multiplying disordered and uncontrollable ways in our body, due to the change of cellular DNA. Most cases of cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the tissue of the organ.
However, at the later stage of the tumor progression, if undetected, the large size of the tumor can suppress and break the nearby small blood vessel, leading to internal bleeding and severe if the tumor also suppresses the nearby nerve cells.
Primary cancer cells at this advanced stage can also travel a distance away from the original site to affect other healthy tissue and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.
Pancreatic cancer is a medical and chronic condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissue of the pancreas.
In the early stage, pancreatic cancer starts in the cells of the surface of the inner lining of pancreatic tissue. At the advanced stage, cancerous cells of the pancreas can travel a distance away to invade other healthy tissue and organs.
The exact causes of the alternation of DNA of pancreatic cells are unknown. However, epidemiological studies suggested that genetic preposition and acquired gene mutations are associated with the increased incidence of cancer.
Some researchers suggested long-term use of tobacco, being overweight and obesity, exposure to workplace chemicals, age, gender and family history are some prevalent risk factors of pancreatic cancer.
According to the statistics, pancreatic cancer is the eighth most common cancer in women and the fourth leading cause of cancer death in men. Pancreatic cancer accounts for 7% of all cancer deaths.
The 5 years survival rate at stage 1 and 2 is 61% and 52% respectively.
Cascara sagrada is a species of buckthorn, genus Rhamnus, belonging to the family Rhamnaceae, native to western North America.
Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean. The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.
On finding a potent compound for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the withaferin-A (WA), the biologically active withanolide extracted from Withania somnifera in human pancreatic cancer cells.
According to the tested analysis, the extract significantly increased the cells spherical structure with double-layer membranes degraded by autophagy through cleaning out damaged cells in normal cells.
However, in human pancreatic cancer (PC) cells, withanolide extract also blocked the degradation of autophagy by inhibiting SNARE protein in the the-mediated fusion of autophagosomes and lysosomes which contains degradative enzymes enclosed in a membrane.
In other words, in human pancreatic cancer (PC) cells, the extract promotes the cancer cell degradation by autophagy to induce apoptosis.
More precisely, WA induced ER stress-mediated apoptosis. by promoting the accumulation of ubiquitinated proteins, associated with degradation via the proteasome, a protein involved in degrading unneeded or damaged proteins.
In vivo, combining WA with a series of ER stress aggravators enhanced apoptosis synergistically in tumor growth in PC xenografts.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "simultaneous suppression of 2 key intracellular protein degradation systems rendered PC cells vulnerable to ER stress, which may represent an avenue for new therapeutic combinations for this disease".
Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of pancreatic cancer, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

Herbal Artichoke Inhibits the Parameters Associated with the Onset of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) in Vivo and Human Study
Non-alcoholic liver disease is a medical condition caused by excessive fat accumulated in the liver of people who drink little or no alcohol.
Believe it or not, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) now becomes a universal disorder and the most common liver disease in the Western world.
According to the statistics in 2015, approximately, 20 to 30% of the general population in the Western world suffer from NAFLD. The prevalent rate is substantially higher in the population with type 2 diabetes mellitus (70%) and morbid obesity (90%).
Some researchers in the assessment of the relationship of widespread obesity in the risk of NAFLD suggested that non-alcoholic fatty liver disease may be caused by the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades.
Dr. Kristen Stephenson, in the assessment of the impact of dietary fat on the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in animal model, wrote, "WD mouse models consisting of high fat, cholesterol, and a combination of high-fructose corn syrup, sucrose, fructose, or glucose not only lead to metabolic syndrome but also induce NAFLD with fibrosis".
Researchers on finding a natural therapeutic for the treatment of Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), the most common cause of chronic liver disease worldwide investigated the artichoke leaf extract (ALE) therapeutic utility in patients with established NAFLD.
The randomized double-blind placebo-controlled parallel-group trial included 100 subjects with ultrasound-diagnosed NAFLD randomized to either ALE 600 mg daily or placebo for a 2-month period.
Compared to the control, the ALE treatment group showed increased hepatic vein flow, reduced portal vein diameter and liver size, according to the Doppler sonography. In other words, ALE treatment improved liver function.
Inflammatory and oxidative stress such as serum ALT, AST levels and total bilirubin were also decreased upon the injection of ALE observed by the improved AST/ALT ratio.
Furthermore, ALE supplementation also reduced total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglyceride concentrations. All these parameters were elevated in patients with NAFLD.
Dr. Panahi Y, the lead scientist, after taking into account other factors, wrote, " This study has shown beneficial effects of ALE supplementation on both ultrasound liver parameters and liver serum parameters (ALT, AST, APRI ratio, and total bilirubin) in patients with NAFLD".
In order to reveal more information about artichoke anti NAFLD activity, researchers elucidated the physiological responses and mechanisms of JA intervention with comprehensive transcriptome analysis.
The study included Wistar rats fed a control diet, a 60 % fructose-enriched diet (FRU), or an FRU with 10 % JA (n 6-7) for 4 weeks with an oral glucose tolerance test was carried out on day 21.
According to the assays, dietary JA supplementation improved the IR and hepatic TAG accumulation induced by the Fructose feeding.
JA also inhibited the gene expression of malic enzyme 1 (Me1), associated with fatty acid synthesis; decorin (Dcn), related to fibrosis; and cytochrome P450, family 1, subfamily a, polypeptide 2 (Cyp1a2) and nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase (Nampt), associated with inflammation.
Based on these results, researchers proposed that 10 % of JA supplementation may be beneficial for the prevention of the onset of NAFLD.
Taken altogether, artichoke may be considered a functional remedy for the treatment of NAFLD with no side effects, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Andrographis, The Best Whole Herb Medicine for Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis
Ulcerative colitis is a condition of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) inducing long-lasting inflammation and ulcers in the digestive tract.
Andrographis paniculata is also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka, used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia,...
In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in evaluating the efficacy of A. paniculata extract (HMPL-004) in 224 adults with mild-to-moderate ulcerative colitis. with patients randomized to A. paniculata extract (HMPL-004) 1,200 mg or 1,800 mg daily or placebo for 8 weeks, patients treated with A. paniculata extract (HMPL-004) at a dose of 1,800 mg daily achieve clinical response than those receiving placebo.
The study also discovered that 60 and 53% of patients treated with A. paniculata groups experienced adverse effects at doses of 1,200 mg and 1,800 mg daily respectively in comparison to 60% in the placebo group.
Dr. Sandborn WJ, the lead author in the study said, "Andrographis paniculata has in vitro inhibitory activity against TNF-α, IL-1β, and NF-κB. A pilot study of A. paniculata extract (HMPL-004) suggested similar efficacy to mesalamine for ulcerative colitis."
Other study involved herbal extract HMPL-004 also support the use of herbal extract for treatment in patients with mild-to-moderate ulcerative colitis, according to the randomized, double-blind, multicentre, 8-week parallel-group study conducted using HMPL-004 with 1200 mg/day in compared with 4500 mg/day of slow-release mesalazine (mesalamine) granules in the same group.
In fact, in comparison to mesalazine, HMPL-004 exhibited a 21% and 76% of more efficacy in treated patients, compared to 16% and 82% of mesalazine-treated patients through the colonoscopy, remission, and response.
Although HMPL-004 may be an efficacious alternative to mesalazine in treating ulcerative colitis, the herbal medicine can only be prescribed by herbalists to prevent overdose toxicity.
