With an aim to find a potent compound for the treatment of diabetes, researchers examined the effects of Withania somnifera (WS) on lipid peroxidation (LPO) and pancreas in type 2 diabetic rats.

The study included type 2 diabetes induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of STZ (100 mg/kg) to 2 days old rat pups pretreated by WS.


According to the tested analysis, untreated rats group showed significant levels of lipid peroxidation (LPO) observed by reducing levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host including glutathione (GSH) contents and by enzymatic activities of glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT).

However, injection of WS not only caused a significant decrease in blood glucose and tissue LPO levels caused by the application of STZ but also a significant increase in GSH contents, compared to type 2 diabetic control rats.

Furthermore, antioxidant enzymes reduced in the untreated rat such as GPx, GR, GST, SOD, and CAT were also increased compared to type 2 diabetic control rats.

Most importantly, the significant reduction in the number and size of pancreatic beta-cells in STZ rats was normalized upon the administration of WS, evident from the histopathological examination.

In other words, WS protects the cells in the pancreas against oxidation and maintains the integrity of beta cells in insulin production in type 2 diabetes rats.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "WS has shown strong free radical scavenging activity and helped in improving the non-enzymatic and enzymatic antioxidants in type 2 diabetic rats".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha WS may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, pending to the results of large example size and multicenter study.

According to the sample collected at the postprandial (PP) time points (-60, 0, 30, 60, 90, 120, 180, 240 and 300 min), and the plasma glucose and serum insulin levels, JAM vs. CON did not change the PP peak of glucose or insulin (glucose: 6.3 ± 0.40 vs. 7.0 ± 0.87 mmol/l.

However, following JAM feeding, glucose and insulin levels declined more rapidly until 240 min PP compared to animal fed with CON.

The finding suggested that JAM exerted a significant effect on postprandial (PP) glucose and insulin levels on and after the time points of 240 min.

Furthermore, in order to reveal more information JA insulinemic response, researchers compared the Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus Linne, HTL) and chungkookjang (CKJ; fermented soybeans) in energy and glucose metabolism.

The study included rats divided into partially pancreatectomized (Px) diabetic rats, and sham-operated non-diabetic control rats and all fed high-fat diets. Additionally, diabetic rats were subdivided into an untreated diabetic control group and those fed with 5% HTL, 5% CKJ or 5% HTL+5% CKJ for 8 weeks. HTL+CKJ treatment reduced visceral fat without modulating energy intake compared to diabetic control.

According to the hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic assay, rats treated HTL, HTL+CKJ showed an improvement in glucose tolerance, compared to the diabetic normal-control group.

CKJ and CKJ+HTL but not HTL, injection groups increased first and second phase insulin secretion compared to that of diabetic-control.

Moreover, the glucose infusion rates (mg/kg bw/min) and hepatic insulin sensitivity were increased and CKJ+HTL (13.5), but not HTL (9.4) or CKJ (9.5) alone, and HTL and CKJ+ HTL decreased hepatic glucose compared to diabetic control.

Dr. Yang HJ, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "HTL and CKJ enhanced glucose tolerance in different manners, and exhibited partially additive and complementary effects by reversing insulin resistance and enhancing β-cell function in diabetic rats".

Taken altogether, artichoke used alone or combined with another herbal remedy may be considered functional food for the enhancement of insulinemic response against the onset of diabetes, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

On HCT-116 and RKO cells, WA exhibited cytotoxicity in a dose-dependent manner.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " these results strongly indicated that WA directly inhibits cell growth and induces apoptosis in CRC cells through ROS-mediated mitochondrial dysfunction and c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNKs) induced apoptosis)".

In rat induced oxidative stress by global cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, application of methanolic extract showed dose-dependent neuroprotective activity by a significant decrease in lipid peroxidation (LPO) and increase in the superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione (GSH) similar to that of the above study.
The treatment group also showed a significantly reduced vertebral infarction area in extract-treated groups, compared to the untreated group.


Dr. Chandrashekhar VM, the lead scientists, said, "The methanolic extract of Matricaria recutita L. showed potent neuroprotective activity against global cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury-induced oxidative stress in rats".

Taken altogether, herbal chamomile which demonstrates the brain neurons' protective effect against oxidative stress in the initiation of neurodegenerative diseases, may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary therapy for the treatment of dementia.

Ginger In the Prevention and Treatment of Nonalcoholic Hepatic Steatosis (Fatty Liver)

Ginger may have a profound effect in reducing the risk and treatment of hepatic steatosis, the early stage of liver disease, some scientists suggested.

Hepatic steatosis or fatty liver is a condition that caused excess fat accumulated in the liver.

At the early stage of hepatic steatosis, the patient may not experience any symptoms. However, at the condition of progress, the condition induces liver inflammation, which may progress to scarring and irreversible damage. Patients at this stage can have symptoms of abdominal swelling, enlarged blood vessels in the skin and spleen accompanied by jaundice.

The most common risk factors are the increase in age, (older than 45 years of age). overweight and obesity and ethnicity.

However, some researchers suggested the coincidence of widespread obesity and the onset of hepatic steatosis might indicate a closed correlation of the e2 conditions.

Dr. Festi D, the lead author in the finding the relation between obesity and hepatic steatosis that causes a wide spectrum of liver damage as simple steatosis may progress to advanced fibrosis and to cryptogenic cirrhosis through steatohepatitis launched an investigation to examine the risk of hepatic steatosis in obese patients.
After taking account co and confounders wrote, "Obesity is the most significant single risk factor for the development of fatty liver, both in children and in adults; obesity is also predictive of the presence of fibrosis, potentially progressing to advanced liver disease".

The risk of the fatty liver may be associated with insulin resistance in the obese patients that play a central role in the accumulation of triglycerides within the hepatocytes and in the initiation of the inflammatory cascade.

Although conventional treatment with insulin-sensitizing agents, anti-oxidants or cytoprotective drugs may be useful, however, they are no randomized clinical trials to support the efficacy.

As of today, there is no direct treatment of hepatic steatosis but relieve the symptoms.

It has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

In finding a natural whole food that may have a potent to prevent and treat nonalcoholic fatty liver, researchers at the Tajen University, Yanpu Township investigate the effects of [6]-gingerol ((S)-5-hydroxy-1-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-3-decanone) in experimental models of the non-alcoholic fatty liver.

[6]-Gingerol (100 µmol/l) inhibited OA-induced triglyceride and inflammatory marker accumulation in HepG2 cells.

In the study of male golden hamsters were dosed orally with [6]-gingerol (25, 50 or 100 mg/kg/day) once daily for 8 weeks after being fed a high-fat diet (HFD) for 2 weeks, injection of [6]-Gingerol (100 mg/kg/day) alleviated liver steatosis, inflammation, and reversed plasma markers of metabolic syndrome in HFD-fed hamsters.

[6]-gingerol also attenuated the expression of inflammatory cytokine genes and nuclear transcription factor-κB (NF-κB) increased in the HFD group.

These results indicated a significant effect of [6]-Gingerol in the attenuation of the HFD-induced steatohepatitis by downregulating NF-κB-mediated inflammatory responses and reducing hepatic lipogenic gene expression.

Additionally, in the concern of widespread Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) may reach epidemic proportions, Dr. Sahebkar A. launched a study to evaluate the ginger effect at the "two-stage hypothesis" proposed for the pathophysiology of NAFLD, insulin resistance, oxidative stress and pro-inflammatory cytokines among the key promoters of the disease.

Application of ginger prevent NAFLD or blunt its progression via several mechanisms, such as sensitizing insulin effects, and down-regulates pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Ginger promoted considerable antioxidant effects and antidyslipidemic properties and reduced hepatic triglyceride content which can prevent steatosis.

All these mechanisms suggested that ginger possesses interesting potentials for serving as a natural supplement for the prevention and treatment of NAFLD.

Herbal Bilberry Reduces Risk of Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is a condition caused by the deterioration of the small central portion of the retina, known as the macula.

Macular degeneration happened mostly in adults over 60, is one of the major cause of vision loss.

The exact causes of macular degeneration are not identified. As of today, researchers cannot explain why some elderly are susceptible to macular degeneration while others do not.

There are 2 forms of macular degeneration
1. The dry form is caused by the presence of yellow deposits, called drusen under the retina, in the macula. However, the elderly with increased was not at a higher risk of macular degeneration.

2. The wet form is caused by the growth of abnormal blood vessels from the choroid, the vascular layer of the eye, underneath the retina.

Compared to the loss of vision of 10% of patients induced by the wet form, most patients of macular degeneration have the dry form which has been found to cause loss of some central vision.


Although aging is one the prevalent risk of the macular degeneration onset, smoking, family history, gender, ethnicity and long-term exposure to the sun and genetic preposition are also some factors may facilitate the early onset of the condition.

Some researchers suggested that macular degeneration may also be caused by an unhealthy diet.

Dr. Chung-Jung Chiu, the lead scientist in the analysis of the relationship of major American dietary patterns to age-related macular degeneration wrote, " (In the comparison of the 2 diets pattern) The Oriental pattern was characterized by higher intake of vegetables, legumes, fruit, whole grains, tomatoes, and seafood. The Western pattern was characterized by higher intake of red meat, processed meat, high-fat dairy products, French fries, refined grains, and eggs".


"For early AMD, multivariate-adjusted odds ratio (OR) from generalized estimating equation logistic analysis comparing the highest to lowest quintile of the Oriental pattern score was ORE5O=0.74 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.59–0.91; Ptrend=0.01), and the OR comparing the highest to lowest quintile of the Western pattern score was ORE5W=1.56 (1.18–2.06; Ptrend=0.01). For advanced AMD, the ORA5O was 0.38 (0.27–0.54; Ptrend<0.0001), and the ORA5W was 3.70 (2.31–5.92; Ptrend<0.0001)".

These results strongly suggested the risk of AMD is many folds higher in people who follow the Western diet compared to those who follow the Oriental diet.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

Searching the list of natural compounds for the treatment of vision decline, scientists examined anthocyanins, bioactive compounds found in bilberry are known to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, on macular degeneration.


Bilberry anthocyanosides (Vaccinium myrtillus L.), according to the differentiation was found to promote rhodopsin synthesis and regeneration, thus increasing the retinal sensitivity to changes in light intensity and visual acuity and dark adaptation.

The bioactive compound also was found to the promoted blood supply of the retina in the prevention of macular degeneration due to aging-induced death of macula cells.

The improvement of the visual function by bilberry may have a strong effect against age-related macular degeneration, Dr. Vorob'eva IV, the lead scientists suggested.

Additionally, with an aim to reveal more information of bilberry anti gradual loss of vision, researchers investigated the changes in clinical, functional, and morphological parameters of the retina in type 2 diabetes patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR) and those with combined fundus pathology (DR plus age-related macular degeneration).


The study included 180 patients (180 eyes) with type 2 diabetes divided into 6 groups of 30 each randomly assigned into group 1 consisted of patients with DRO,; group 2--DR1 without DM, group 3--DR1 with DM, group 4--DRO and "dry" AMD (AREDS 1-3), group 5--DR1 with no DM but with AMD (AREDS 1-3), and group 6--DR1 with DM and AMD (AREDS 1-3).


A drug-containing lutein 6 mg, zeaxanthin 0.5 mg, vitamin C 60 mg, vitamin E 7 mg, vitamin A 1.5 mg, vitamin B2 1.2 mg, rutin 25 mg, zinc 5 mg, Selenium 25 mcg, and bilberry extract 60 mg was used for antioxidative therapy. Ginkgo biloba leaf extracts 60 mg was chosen as the radioprotector.

At the end of the experiment, researchers found that
* Macular thickness was statistically significant only in 3 and 6 (p<0.05)compared to only slight changes on other groups and light sensitivity of the macula showed a reduction, which was statistically significant in groups 4-6 before treatment.



* Injection of the supplements antioxidant and angio-protective activities displayed a strong improvement of all parameters related to visual decline, including increased visual acuity.

Dr. the lead scientist wrote in the final report,  "a combined antioxidant and double-dose angio-protective (240 mg) therapy appeared to be the most effective and can be considered not only a preventive but also a therapeutic measure in type 2 diabetes patients with initial stages of DR (DRO, DR1) or those with DR and DM or combined DR and AMD (AREDS 1-3)".

Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a herbal remedy for the improvement of visual decline, particularly, in patients with macular degeneration, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.
