Fennel, A Potent Functional Food for Treatment of Infantile Colic

Fennel may have a profound and positive effect on the reduced risk of infantile colic, some scientists suggest.

Infantile colic is a reaction of the infant if episodes of crying for more than three hours a day, for more than three days a week, for three weeks in an otherwise healthy child. The condition has a strong impacted on psychological, emotional, and physical burden to parents.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of genus, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean, used in traditional and herbal medicine as warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,...

Nutrients
1. Carbohydrates
2. Fiber
3. Protein
4. Thiamine (Vitamin B1)
5. Riboflavin (Vitamin B2)
6. Niacin (Vitamin B3)
7. Pantothenic acid (B5)

In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to investigate the effectiveness and side effects of phytotherapeutic agent with Matricariae recutita, Foeniculum vulgare and Melissa officinalis in treatment of infantile colic in a total of the 93 breastfed colicky infants conducted by the John Wiley & Sons, Ltd, after a 3 day observation period, the infants randomly assigned to groups treated with phytotherapeutic agent (PA) and group received placebo twice a day for 1 week, researchers found that crying time in group received PA was reduced substantially in 85.4% of subjects in compared to 48.9% subjects in placebo group against baseline.

PA treatment group exerted no side effects during the period of the experiment.

Base on the result, researchers suggested that PA demonstrated a significant activity within one week of application in infantile colic.

Furthermore, the St. Petersburg Medical Academy of Postdoctoral Education in the concerns of the side effects of 5% of infants treated with dicyclomine hydrochloride, the only pharmacological treatment for infantile colic, with substantial side effects, including death, conducted a randomized placebo-controlled trial of 125 infants, 2 to 12 weeks of age from 2 large multi-specialty clinics by assigning them to either group treated with fennel or placebo, indicated that fennel treatment group improves the crying time episodes and frequency significantly in compared to the placebo group.

According to the Wessel assay, infantile colic was reduced by 65% (40/62) in the treatment group in comparison to only 23.7% (14/59) in placebo.

Further analysis also found that the application of fennel induced a risk reduction of 41% in comparison to placebo without causing any side effects.

Although the causes of infantile colic are unknown, some researchers suggested that the results of fennel in treatment of infantile colic may be attributed to its efficacy in the hypothetical conditions catalyzed by
*Abnormal gastrointestinal function caused by imbalanced of the bacterial ratio

According to the literature reported by the Swansea University, the application of fennel essential oil has a sustainable effect in inhibited E. coli growth, observed by disc diffusion assays and in liquid culture.

These results were illustrated by the effect of an aqueous extract of the aerial part and aqueous extract of seed samples of fennel.

Fennel inhibited the overgrowth of Agrobacterium radiobacter pv. tumefaciens, Erwinia carotovora, Pseudomonas fluorescens, andPseudomonas glycinea, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, Pseudomona aeruginosa, Salmonella typhi, Salmonella typhimurium, Shigella flexneri, and Bacillus cereus in maintenance integrity of digestive function.

Further differentiation also suggested that fennel has a strong impact in protected the gastric damage through significantly increased nitrite, nitrate, ascorbic acid, retinol, and beta-carotene levels.

Dr. Shamkant B. Badgujar, the lead author, in the differentiation of fennel, in regard to the gastrointestinal effect, said, "Foeniculum vulgare is indicated in the treatment of spastic gastrointestinal disturbances, in some forms of chronic colitis (which resist other treatments), in dyspepsias from gastrointestinal atony, in dyspepsias with the sensation of heaviness in the stomach, and so forth. The addition of fennel to preparations containing anthraquinone components reduces the occurrence of abdominal pain often associated with this type of laxative"

* In Psychological aspect of mother such as mother’s depression, anxiety and distress during pregnancy in induction of infantile colic, although there are no direct literature to confirm the efficacy of fennel in treating syndromes of these group of women, but in the study of psychological symptoms in women with premenstrual syndrome, application of fennel seed was associated in decreased depression and anxiety.

Also, in stress-induced maternal anxiety and depression, application of fennel extract (50, 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight) showed a significant improvement of urinary levels of vanillyl mandelic acid(VMA) and ascorbic acid excretion levels in measurement of potentially psychological stress in fennel treatment group in compared to the normal group.

These results indicated that the extract of the entire plant of F. Vulgare pay have a potential effect by acting as an anti-stress agent in reduced depression and anxiety in maternity.

* In food allergic aspect, although there are no direct study in expression of fennel improved immune response against food allergy,.

Some researchers postulated that anethole, a bioactive compound from fennel inhibited food allergy probably through enhancing immune system food hypersensitivity response by modulating the expression of Foxp3+ in regulated the development and function T cells and inhibition of Th2 cytokines in promoted antibodies production of immunoglobulin E (IgE), thus reducing immune system overreacts to an allergen.

Taken together, the findings suggested that fennel may be considered as a function food for treatment of infantile colic, however, a large sample size and study by multi centers are necessary to reconfirm the viability.

Herbal Ashwagandha Protects the Beta Cells of Pancreas Against the Onset of Diabetes in Vivo

Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream. Insulin resistance and hyperglycemia are hallmarks of diabetes.

In other words, insulin produced by the pancreas is either blocked by the clogging-up of the insulin receptors by fat and cholesterol or the death of beta cells in the pancreas. In some cases, diabetes can also be associated with autoimmune disease, attacking the beta cells.

There are some major types of diabetes, including the best known, type 1 and 2.
* Type 1 diabetes is associated with a genetic proposition that leads to the immune system to attack insulin-producing cells of the pancreas.

* Type 2 diabetes (acquired diabetes), is a condition caused by either the pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin, or the insulin does not work properly due to dysfunction of the insulin receptors.

In pregnancy, gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes occurred during the second or third trimester of pregnancy. Gestation diabetes goes away after giving birth.

However, omen with gestation diabetes is associated with a substantial risk of diabetic developing sometimes in the future.

Epidemiologically, obesity, an unhealthy lifestyle with physical inactivity are some of the most common risk factor associated with the slow onset of diabetes.

Interestingly, some researchers suggested, night shifts workers accompanied by unhealthy lifestyles are linking to a high risk of type 2 diabetes suggested, " risk of type 2 diabetes is actually higher than simply adding the individual risks associated with unhealthy lifestyle and shift work together, indicating that combining an unhealthy lifestyle with irregular night-time working adds a further risk".

"It is well-established that unhealthy lifestyle behaviors such as smoking, a poor diet, and little exercise, and being overweight or obese increase the risk of type 2 diabetes. Shift work, especially night shift work, has also been associated with a greater risk of type 2 diabetes".

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.
The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

With an aim to find a potent compound for the treatment of diabetes, researchers examined the effects of Withania somnifera (WS) on lipid peroxidation (LPO) and pancreas in type 2 diabetic rats.

The study included type 2 diabetes induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of STZ (100 mg/kg) to 2 days old rat pups pretreated by WS.

According to the tested analysis, untreated rats group showed significant levels of lipid peroxidation (LPO) observed by reducing levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host including glutathione (GSH) contents and by enzymatic activities of glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT).

However, injection of WS not only caused a significant decrease in blood glucose and tissue LPO levels caused by the application of STZ but also a significant increase in GSH contents, compared to type 2 diabetic control rats.

Furthermore, antioxidant enzymes reduced in the untreated rat such as GPx, GR, GST, SOD, and CAT were also increased compared to type 2 diabetic control rats.

Most importantly, the significant reduction in the number and size of pancreatic beta-cells in STZ rats was normalized upon the administration of WS, evident from the histopathological examination.

In other words, WS protects the cells in the pancreas against oxidation and maintains the integrity of beta cells in insulin production in type 2 diabetes rats.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "WS has shown strong free radical scavenging activity and helped in improving the non-enzymatic and enzymatic antioxidants in type 2 diabetic rats".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha WS may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, pending to the results of large example size and multicenter study.

Herbal Artichoke Regulates Insulinemic Response

Insulin response is a process of your body that reacts to the dietary intake.

Insulin produced by the pancreas is a hormone that binds the insulin receptors in the promotion of cells of the intestines to convert glucose to energy for the body's needs.

Acute insulin response used as the predictor of types 2 diabetes by diagnosed both normal fasting and 2-h plasma glucose concentrations.

Compared to a healthy individual with normal insulin response, most patients of prediabetes and diabetes have elevated fasting and 2 hours of plasma glucose concentration.

There are many risk factors associated with the abnormal insulinemic response. However, some researchers suggested that the gradual dying of the beta cells of pancreas and insulin receptors sites clogging-up by cholesterol are 2 of the major causes that affect insulin expression.

Some researchers suggested that abnormal insulin response may be correlated to the widespread of obesity that leads to insulin resistance in the Western world.

Dr. Olga T. Hardy, in the evaluation of the causes of insulin resistance underlying obesity wrote,

"The association between obesity and insulin resistance is an area of much interest and enormous public health impact".

And, "Visceral adiposity is correlated with the accumulation of excess lipid in the liver and results in cell-autonomous impairment in insulin signaling. Visceral adipose tissue is also prone to inflammation and inflammatory cytokine production, which also contribute to impairment in insulin signaling".

The results strongly suggested if you are obese, your risk of insulin resistance increased substantially compared to overweight or healthy weight individuals.

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

Researchers on finding a potential natural ingredient for the modulation of insulinemic response, researchers investigate the impact of the supplementation of a pre-biotic compound [Jerusalem artichoke meal (JAM)] on the glycaemic and insulinemic response in healthy, non-obese warm-blooded horses.

The study included 6 adult mares fed with crushed oat grains (1 g starch/kg bwt per day) and meadow hay (2 kg/100 kg bwt per day) together with either 0.15 g fructooligosaccharides and inulin (FOS+INU)/kg bwt per day via commercial JAM or maize cob meal without grains as control (CON) in 2 × 3-week periods according to a crossover design.

According to the sample collected at the postprandial (PP) time points (-60, 0, 30, 60, 90, 120, 180, 240 and 300 min), and the plasma glucose and serum insulin levels, JAM vs. CON did not change the PP peak of glucose or insulin (glucose: 6.3 ± 0.40 vs. 7.0 ± 0.87 mmol/l.

However, following JAM feeding, glucose and insulin levels declined more rapidly until 240 min PP compared to animal fed with CON.

The finding suggested that JAM exerted a significant effect on postprandial (PP) glucose and insulin levels on and after the time points of 240 min.

Furthermore, in order to reveal more information JA insulinemic response, researchers compared the Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus Linne, HTL) and chungkookjang (CKJ; fermented soybeans) in energy and glucose metabolism.

The study included rats divided into partially pancreatectomized (Px) diabetic rats, and sham-operated non-diabetic control rats and all fed high-fat diets. Additionally, diabetic rats were subdivided into an untreated diabetic control group and those fed with 5% HTL, 5% CKJ or 5% HTL+5% CKJ for 8 weeks. HTL+CKJ treatment reduced visceral fat without modulating energy intake compared to diabetic control.

According to the hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic assay, rats treated HTL, HTL+CKJ showed an improvement in glucose tolerance, compared to the diabetic normal-control group.

CKJ and CKJ+HTL but not HTL, injection groups increased first and second phase insulin secretion compared to that of diabetic-control.

Moreover, the glucose infusion rates (mg/kg bw/min) and hepatic insulin sensitivity were increased and CKJ+HTL (13.5), but not HTL (9.4) or CKJ (9.5) alone, and HTL and CKJ+ HTL decreased hepatic glucose compared to diabetic control.

Dr. Yang HJ, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "HTL and CKJ enhanced glucose tolerance in different manners, and exhibited partially additive and complementary effects by reversing insulin resistance and enhancing β-cell function in diabetic rats".

Taken altogether, artichoke used alone or combined with another herbal remedy may be considered functional food for the enhancement of insulinemic response against the onset of diabetes, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Ashwagandha Destroys Colorectal Cancer Cells

The bowel is divided into the small bowel (or small intestine) and the large bowel (or colon and rectum).
The large intestine formed a part of the bowel in the digestive system is involved in the absorption of water from the small bowel contents and broken down of certain materials in the feces into substances of which some of them to be reabsorbed and reused by the body.

Colorectal cancer is the chronic diseases associated with a malignant tumor in the colon or rectum that begins in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the colon or rectum before proliferating into deeper tissues to form a tumor due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Most cases of colorectal cancer are diagnosed in developed countries, including the U.S. and Canada.
The disease also is relatively very common and slowly growing and progressing cancer with a tendency that is easy to predict.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society in 2019, approximately
101,420 new cases of colon cancer and 44,180 new cases of rectal cancer will be diagnosed in the US.

Furthermore, the overall, lifetime risk colorectal cancer of developing is 1 in 22 (4.49%) for men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) for women.

Due to the slow growth in nature, most people with colorectal cancer do not experience any symptoms until the advanced stage.

Most common symptoms of colorectal cancer at the late stage can induce symptoms of change of bowel movement, bloody stool and persistent abdominal discomforts, such as cramps, gas or pain, accompanied by the unintended weight loss, fatigue and loss of appetite,

If you experience some of the above symptoms, please contact your doctor to rule out the possibility of colorectal cancer.

At this advanced stage, colorectal cancer cells can also travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs, leading to a second metastasis.
Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of colorectal cancer, scientists investigated the effects of Withaferin A (WA), an active steroidal lactone derived from the herbal plant Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha), on reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced colorectal cancer model.

According to the tested differentiation, withaferin A showed significant activity in inducing apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in human colon cancer cells.

ROS accumulation that causes mitochondrial dysfunction associated with a cellular network of organelles involved cancer cell progression was also eradicated by the injection of withaferin A.

In other words, withaferin A-induced ROS-mediated cell cycle arrest and the expression of apoptotic proteins by promoting colorectal cancer cell death resulting in decreased mitochondrial membrane potential accompanying with mitochondrial dysfunction.

On HCT-116 and RKO cells, WA exhibited cytotoxicity in a dose-dependent manner.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " these results strongly indicated that WA directly inhibits cell growth and induces apoptosis in CRC cells through ROS-mediated mitochondrial dysfunction and c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNKs) induced apoptosis)".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha processed abundantly bioactive compound withaferin A may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer, pending to larger sample and multicenter human study.

Herbal Chamomile, the Best Neuro-protective Remedy

Herbal Chamomile processed a high amount of antioxidants may have a strong and profound neuroprotective effect against the onset of cognitive impairment, according to studies.

Cognitive impairment is a medical condition associated with a decline in cognitive abilities, including memory and thinking skills.

Approximately 15 to 20% of cognitive impairment is diagnosed in people age 65 or older. However, if the condition of cognitive impairment gets worse over time, it eventually leads to dementia that compromises social and/or occupational functioning.

In the early stage of cognitive impairment, patients may experience symptoms of hallucinations. delusions, personality changes, apathy, and some depression and anxiety symptoms.

If you are experiencing some of the above symptoms, please make you check with your doctors to rule out the possibility.

Although there are many factors associated with the onset of cognitive impairment, some researchers suggested that aging is the major cause of the condition in the Western world.

Therefore, finding a strategy for the delay of cognitive impairment in the elderly has become more urgent. Dr. Blanka Klimova, and colleagues in the dementia team at the University Hospital Hradec Kralove and University Hradec Kralove in the concern of the risk of cognitive impairment in aging wrote, " physical activities, such as walking and aerobic exercises, music therapy, adherence to Mediterranean diet, or solving crosswords, seem to be very promising lifestyle intervention tools"

And, "The results indicate that non-pharmacological lifestyle intervention activities should be intense and possibly done simultaneously in order to be effective in the prevention of cognitive decline. In addition, more longitudinal randomized controlled trials are needed in order to discover the most effective types and the duration of these intervention activities in the prevention of cognitive decline, typical of aging population groups"

Chamomile is also known as camomile, the common name of many species daisy-like plants in the family Asteraceae.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory constituent and for the treatment of menstrual cramps and sleep disorders, reduce cramping and spastic pain in the bowels, relieve excessive gas and bloating in the intestine, etc.

Scientists on finding an herbal remedy which processes neuroprotective effects examined the chamomile activity against the onset of oxidative stress which is considered a key role in the pathophysiology of many neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease.

Aluminum fluoride (AlF₄⁻)-induced oxidative stress in rats selected to the study were divided randomly into group I received normal saline; group II received AlF₄⁻ (negative control); groups III, IV, and V received 100, 200, and 300 mg/kg, orally, German chamomile methanol extract (GCME) along with AlF₄⁻; and group VI received quercetin (25 mg/kg, i.p.) + AlF₄⁻, respectively.

The experiment included a 10 days treatment with GCME before the animal induced oxidative stress by administering AlF₄⁻ through drinking water for 7 days.

Administration of GCME inhibited the levels of oxidative stress through increasing the production of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host and a decrease in lipid peroxidation (LPO).
Compared with the negative control group (P < 0.001), chamomile displayed a potent neuroprotective action against oxidative brain damage.

In rat induced oxidative stress by global cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, application of methanolic extract showed dose-dependent neuroprotective activity by a significant decrease in lipid peroxidation (LPO) and increase in the superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione (GSH) similar to that of the above study.
The treatment group also showed a significantly reduced vertebral infarction area in extract-treated groups, compared to the untreated group.

Dr. Chandrashekhar VM, the lead scientists, said, "The methanolic extract of Matricaria recutita L. showed potent neuroprotective activity against global cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury-induced oxidative stress in rats".

Taken altogether, herbal chamomile which demonstrates the brain neurons' protective effect against oxidative stress in the initiation of neurodegenerative diseases, may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary therapy for the treatment of dementia.

Garlic: Whole food medicine for Reduced Risk and Treatment of Lung Cancer

Garlic (Allium sativum) is a species in the onion genus, belonging to family Amaryllidaceae, native to central Asia. It has been used popularly in traditional and Chinese medicine in treating common cold and flu to the Plague, blood pressure cholesterol levels, natural antibiotics, etc.

Lung cancer is defined as a condition of the abnormal growth of the cells in the lung's tissue. The most common form of primary lung cancers is derived from epithelial cells. In the Us, Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths, causing 158,683 people deaths, including 88,329 men and 70,354 women, according to the 2007 statistic.

A recent study suggested that garlic may be used as chemoprevention and treatment of lung cancer.

According to the study by Medical Research Center, College of Medicine allyl sulfur compounds and garlic extract found in garlic exhibited anti nonsmall cell lung cancer cell lines effects through interference on tumor cell division and tumor cell proliferation.

Benzo(a)pyrene-induced precancerous carcinogenesis in human lung cells, oil-soluble organosulfur compounds in garlic induced suppression of cell proliferation, cell cycle regulation, attenuation of ROS formation, inhibition of DNA damage, after administration.

The examination of the association between raw garlic consumption and lung cancer, a case-control study conducted between 2005 and 2007 in Taiyuan, China, showed that compared with no intake, raw garlic intake is associated with a lower risk of development of lung cancer with a dose-response pattern.

In fact, the Epidemiologic data collected by face-to-face interviews using a standard questionnaire among 1,424 lung cancer cases and 4,543 healthy controls also supported the negation of garlic intake and lung disease and suggested that garlic may potentially serve as a chemopreventive agent for lung cancer.

Dr. Yang GQ, the lead researchers at the 107th Hospital of the People's Liberation Army said, "black garlic extract (BGE) could have a significant inhibitory action on the growth of lung cancer Lewis cells. The combination of BGE and radiotherapy (by 60Co gamma) significantly induced Lewis cells' apoptosis in G2/M stage".

Whole food garlic in reduced risk and treatment of lung cancer probably is due to the effect of its' phytochemicals. Adding a portion of garlic in your diet is beneficial for increased protection against lung cancer development.
