Herbal Chamomile Extracts That Normalize the (Over and Under Active) Function of Immune System

Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla), in a recent study conducted by some renowned institutions, restored the resistance against lethal infection with the predominately granulocyte-dependant Candida albicans in immunosuppressed mice.

The immune system is the set of cells comprised of the body's defense system against diseases.

In normal immunity, active immunity may also be artificially acquired active immunity caused by the injection of the vaccine, a substance that contains antigen and passive immunity is an auto-response of immune system against infection through the production of antigen.

Immunity can also be passive and active, Dr. David Baxter, in the article of "Active and passive immunity, vaccine types, excipients and licensing" wrote, "Active immunity refers to the process of exposing the body to an antigen to generate an adaptive immune response: the response takes days/weeks to develop but may be long-lasting—even lifelong" and " Passive immunity refers to the process of providing IgG antibodies to protect against infection; it gives immediate, but short-lived protection—several weeks to 3 or 4 months at most. Passive immunity is usually classified as natural or acquired"(3).

However, an abnormal immune response such as overactive and underactive may cause a weakened immune system or autoimmune diseases.

The common characteristic of overactive immunity is the immune system that attacks healthy tissues, thus provoking inflammation, as well as tissue and organ damage. Truly, there are an estimated 80 autoimmune diaereses, that affect 14–22 million Americans, or 5%–8% of the population, and their prevalence is on the rise, according to the US National Institutes of Health (NIH)(4).

Underactive immunity can be a primary immune deficiency or acquired immune deficiency. People with weakened immunity, regardless of the cause are at constant danger of infections from bacteria, viruses, and fungi.

Chamomile is also known as camomile, the common name of many species daisy-like plants in the family Asteraceae,

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory constituents and to treat menstrual cramps and sleep disorders, reduce cramping and spastic pain in the bowels, relieve excessive gas and bloating in the intestine, etc.

In the study to examine the immunomodulatory effect of a group of the medicinal plant including Silene (Silene Nocturna), Black seed (Nigella sativa) and Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) growing in Egypt in Balb/c mice, researchers found that intraperitoneal injection chamomile methanolic extract was found to enhance immunity through the increased total white blood cells count(1).

In comparison to other plant extracts, chamomile extracts also increased bone marrow cellularity significantly(1).

Furthermore, spleen weight of chamomile treated groups was significantly increased. increased weight of spleen is an indication of improved immune activity as spleen plays an important role in the modulation of the immune system and in the maintenance of peripheral tolerance via the clearance of circulating apoptotic cells, the differentiation and activation of T and B cells and production of antibodies(5)

In groups induced immunosuppressed with cyclophosphamide, group pretreated with the chamomile extracts inhibit Candida significantly through restored their resistance against lethal infection with the predominately granulocyte-dependant Candida albicans(1).

Dr. Ghonime M, the lead author said, These results confirm the immunomodulatory activity of Silene, Black seed, and Chamomile extracts and may have therapeutical implications in the prophylactic treatment of opportunistic infections and as supportive treatment in oncogenic cases".

According to the Russian State Medical University, Moscow, heteropolysaccharides, a class of sugars, found in Matricaria chamomilla L. showed to normalize the development of the immune response upon air cooling.

These results are attributed to chamomile heteropolysaccharides effects in initiated immunostimulating properties of heavy erythrocytes (macrocytes), the group of enlargement of red blood cells, activated of immunoregulation of cells of peripheral blood and increased the sensitivity of effector cells to helper signals.

Dr. Ghonime M, the lead author, said, "immunomodulatory activity,.....Chamomile extracts may have therapeutical implications in the prophylactic treatment of opportunistic infections and as supportive treatment in oncogenic cases".

There is no doubt that chamomile and its chemical ingredients have expressed a strong immunomodulatory activity in the protection of our body against various diseases, but the intake of large quantities should be taken with care to avoid toxicity.

However, further data collection on large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the chamomile extracts during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of chamomile immunomodulatory possibilities.

Herbal Chaste Tree Berry Normalizes Menstrual Cycle and Enhanced Pregnancy in Women with Oligomenorrhea

A renowned study suggested that Chaste tree berry has a potential effect in enhancing pregnancy in women with the abnormal menstrual cycle.

Fertility is a natural process to ensure the survival of human species. Through natural selection, we produce many offspring when the reproductive system works at its peak in a suitable environment with plenty of food around. On the other hand, the reproductive system may completely shut down or work at its minimum state and we produce less offspring when the environment is hostile including fewer foods around, war, epidemic.

Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, used in herbal medicine for thousands of years as an aphrodisiac herb and considered as Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts.

In a total of 37 women with oligomenorrhea and 30 women with amenorrhea received 50 drops of Phyto Hypophyson L, a preparation from Chaste tree berry or placebo 3 times a day over 3 months or 3 cycles, the preparation not only normalized the menstrual cycle of women with oligomenorrhea but also significantly improved the chance of pregnancy, compared placebo group.

Dr. Bergmann J, the lead author said, " The baby take-home rate during the therapy and 6 months after the end of the therapy showed a ratio of 18.7 /6.4%)".

The effectiveness of the preparation in an enhanced rate of pregnancy with remarkable outcome maybe
due to the increase of progesterone during the luteal phase compared to the oligomenorrhea placebo group, with only very few undesirable side effects.

In another study with the same group of women, researchers found that treatment of preparation to women with sterility and oligomenorrhea can induce pregnancy over a period of 3-6 months with an attractive rate.

Promisingly, in a randomized double-blind study to test the effect of Vitex agnus castus preparation (Strotan capsules) vs. placebo, involved 52 women with luteal phase defects due to latent hyperprolactinaemia, women who are taking the daily dose of one capsule (20 mg) Vitexagnus cactus preparation reserved the elevated pituitary prolactin and normalized deficits in luteal phase length and increased luteal phase progesterone synthesis. comparable to placebo, after three months of therapy.

Dr. Milewicz A, the lead researcher said, "Side effects were not seen, two women treated with the Vitex agnus castus preparation got pregnant. The tested preparation is thought to be an efficient medication in the treatment of luteal phase defects due to latent hyperprolactinemia".

Taking together, Chaste tree berry may have a pharmaceutical value in promoting pregnancy in women with sterility and oligomenorrhea, but large doses should be taken with care against toxicity.

Turmeric, the Potential Spice that Detoxes Your Lung Against Toxicity

Lung toxicity or pulmonary toxicity refers to the toxicity induced by the side effects of the lung in patients under chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

The most common drugs associated with lung toxicity used for the treatment of cancer include Arsenic trioxide (Trisenox®) Bleomycin (Blenoxane®)1 Idarubicin (Idamycin®).

However, lung toxicity is also caused by inhaling chemical compounds, the most famous (infamous) example is pulmonary toxicity due to asbestos. air pollution and airborne particulate matter produced by car traffic, overland traffic (trucks), industrial production facilities, and cigarette smoking.

Symptoms of lung damage or toxicity are a shortage of breath, breathlessness during exercise, fatigue dry cough Shortness of breath, particularly the symptoms that worsen when lying on your back breath.

Acute pulmonary toxicity, the damage to the lungs that resolves with a short period of time by addressing the cause.

Conventionally, most common treatments of lung toxicity are the use of
* Corticosteroids to decrease inflammation and relieve the cough and pain

*Narcotics to reduce pain medications and promote breathing center

* Oxygen therapy to increase oxygen in the blood and prevent shortness of breath.

In severe cases, patients may be sent to the hospital for pulmonary (lung) rehabilitation.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On finding a natural compound for the treatment of lung toxicity scientists evaluated the protective effects of curcumin on lipid peroxidation and antioxidants status in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) of a nicotine-treated animal model.

Wistar rats selected to the study were induced lung toxicity by subcutaneous injection of nicotine at a dose of 2.5 mg/kg body weight (5 days a week, for 22 weeks) and following by administration of curcumin (80 mg/kg body weight) given simultaneously by intragastric intubation for 22 weeks.

Before injecting curcumin, injection of nicotine rats showed the increased biochemical marker enzymes, lipid peroxides in BALF and BAL accompanied by a significant decrease in the levels of antioxidants in the lung.

Following the treatment of curcumin, infected rats showed a significantly lowered the biochemical marker enzymes, lipid peroxidation and enhanced the antioxidant status.

Based on the results, researchers said, "The results of the present study suggest that curcumin exerts its protective effect against nicotine-induced lung toxicity by modulating the biochemical marker enzymes, lipid peroxidation and augmenting antioxidant defense system".

In order to reveal more information about turmeric detoxed activity, researchers examined the protective role of curcumin and a synthetic analog of curcumin (BDMC-A) on nicotine-induced oxidative stress.

Male albino rats of Wistar strain selected to the study induced lung toxicity by subcutaneous injection of nicotine at a dose of 2.5 mg/kg body weight (five days a week, for 22 weeks) and followed by the treatment of curcuminoids given simultaneously by intragastric intubation for 22 weeks.

Nicotine-treated groups before injection of curcumin showed increased oxidative stress, as evidenced by lipid peroxidation indices.

Injection of curcumin and BDMC-A not only restored the antioxidant status which was decreased in the nicotine-treated group.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The present study suggests that BDMC-A exerts its protective effect by modulating the extent of lipid peroxidation and augmenting the antioxidant defense system".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention of lung toxicity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Green tea Polyphenols, the Potential Candidate for Treatment of Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Scientists Find

Scientists may have found a beverage which processes the ability to protect the central nervous system against the onset of spinal muscular atrophy, some studies suggested.
Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a rare neuromuscular disorder affected the part of the nervous system that controls voluntary muscle movement due to the loss of motor neurons and progressive muscle wasting.

The disease is caused by a mutation in the SMN1 gene on chromosome 5. In some cases, the disease is also associated with a mutation in an X-chromosome gene called UBE1 causes X-linked SMA.

Depending on the disease severity, patients with SMA may experience symptoms of muscle weakness and decreased muscle tone, limited mobility, breathing problem, problems eating and swallowing, delayed gross motor skill and spontaneous tongue movements.

Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

In the investigation to reexamine, the laboratory-based evidence suggest that purified polyphenol compounds such as resveratrol, found naturally in red grapes, epigallocatechin galate from green tea and curcumin from turmeric, might be useful for the treatment of various inherited neuromuscular diseases, including spinal muscular atrophy, researchers at the RJAH Orthopaedic Hospital launched an investigation to evaluate the scientific evidence related to the known molecular effects that these polyphenols have on different models of inherited neuromuscular disease, with particular attention to problems with the validity of in vitro evidence.

Application of polyphenols demonstrated the molecular effects on different models of inherited neuromuscular disease,

Polyphenols, in vitro, exerts a significant effect on cells through metal ion chelation in cell-culture media.

Dr. Fuller HR, the lead author after taking into account co and confounders said, "Polyphenols could be an attractive approach to therapy for the inherited neuromuscular disease, especially since they may be safer to use on young children, compared with some of the other drug candidates".

Additionally, in the assessment of Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a major component of green tea polyphenols effect on neuroprotection, researchers at The Second Hospital of Hebei Medical University found that injection of EGCG exerts substantial protection of motor neuron by regulating glutamate level in organotypic culture of rat spinal cord.

Further analysis suggested EGCG blocks the glutamate excitotoxicity caused by threohydroxyaspartate, an inhibitor of glutamate transporter not by its antioxidant activity but other unknown mechanisms. As another antioxidant could not regulate the glutamate level under the same condition in another study.

These results suggested that EGCG may be a potential therapeutic candidate for neurodegenerative diseases involving glutamate excitotoxicity, including SMA.

Taken altogether, green tea purified polyphenols may be considered an adjunct therapy combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of various inherited neuromuscular diseases, including spinal muscular atrophy

Herbal Cascara Sagrada (Rhamnus purshiana), The Best for the Prevention and Treatment of Liver cancer

Herbal Cascara sagrada processed a bioactive compound emodin may have a significant and potential effect in reducing the risk and treatment of liver cancer, according to studies.

Liver cancer is a medical and chronic condition caused by irregular cell growth in the liver tissues, due to the alternation of cell DNA.

The liver organ is one of the organs with a lack of nerve tissue, therefore liver cancer does not induce pain until the later stage.

At the advanced stage of liver cancer, the cancer cell may travel a distance away to infect other tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

According to the statistics provided by the Canadian Cancer Society, every year, approximately, 1,900 men and 580 women are diagnosed with liver cancer, causing the death of 950 men and 270 women.

In 2017, 2,500 Canadians were diagnosed with liver cancer and 1,200 Canadians died from liver cancer.

Compared to the early stage of other cancer, the 5 years survival rate in the early stage diagnosis is only 31% and 43% of people with liver cancer diagnosed at stage 0 and 1.

The exact causes of liver cancer are unknown. However, chronic infection with hepatitis virus, cirrhosis, genetic preposition, a medical condition of diabetes, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and excessive alcohol consumption are some of the most prevalent risk factors of liver cancer, epidemiologically.

Dr. Chuang SC, the lead scientist in the concern of excessive alcohol drinking in risk of liver cancer, wrote, "Compared to individuals who never drank or drank at very low frequencies, the meta-relative risk (mRR) forever drinkers was 1.29 (95% confidence interval, CI 1.16-1.42) and 1.46 (95% CI 1.27-1.65) for case-control studies".

And, "The dose-response relation between alcohol and liver cancer was apparent with RR = 1.08 (95% CI 1.04-1.11) for 12 g/day (~1 drink), 1.54 (95% CI 1.36-1.74) for 50 g/day, 2.14 (95% CI 1.74-2.62) for 75 g/day, 3.21 (95% CI 2.34-4.40) for 100 g/day, and 5.20 (95% CI 3.25-8.29) for 125 g/day of alcohol consumption".

The finding clearly suggested, one alcoholic drink per day (~12 g/day) may be associated with 1.1 times higher liver cancer risk and risk of liver cancer increases proportionally to the volume intake per day.

Cascara sagrada is a species of buckthorn, genus Rhamnus, belonging to the family Rhamnaceae, native to western North America. The herbal bark has been used in traditional medicine for gastrointestinal support. and it is thought to have a laxative and natural cleansing, etc..

The chemical constituents of Cascara Sagrada include Aloe-emodin, Anthrquinone glycosides (Barbaloin Cascarosides A, B, C and D ChrysaloinFrangul), Chrysophanol, Emodin, Heterodianthrones palmidin A, B, and C, dianthrones, Oxanthrone, Rhein, Tannins, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of liver cancer examined the effect of emodin, a bioactive ingredient isolated from herbal Cascara Sagrada against CXCL12-CXCR4 signaling cascade which plays an important role in the process of invasion and metastasis of liver cancer.

Where The CXCL12/CXCR4 axis is a pathway involved in tumor progression, angiogenesis, metastasis, and survival.

Injection of emodin inhibited the expression of CXCR4 in a dose and time-dependent manner in HCC cells.

Treatment of emodin demonstrated a better effect compared to the pharmacological proteasome and lysosomal inhibitors on the decrease in CXCR4 expression.

The suppression of CXCR4 expression was attributed to several mechanisms, including the inhibition of cancer cells mRNA expression, a protein associated with cancer cell proliferation and production of antigens by innate immunity.

Furthermore, emodin treatment significantly suppressed metastasis to the lungs in an orthotopic HCC mice model and CXCR4 expression in tumor tissues.

In other human cancers cell lines, emodin-induced apoptosis in HepG2 cells through cell cycle arrest.

According to the Western blot data, emodin inhibited cancer cell growth through a set of mechanisms, including cell degradation and protein associated with cell death programming.

Moreover, application emodin increased the expression in the initiation of cytotoxicity against HepG2 without causing harm to the nearby healthy cells.

Additionally, emodin increased the protein p53 associated with tumor suppression and decreased the protein involved in cancer cell proliferation in HepG2 cells.

These results suggest that emodin induces apoptosis in the liver cancer cell line through a multifaceted complex cascade of events.

Taken altogether, herbal Cascara Sagrada processed a major bioactive compound emodin may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of liver cancer, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Chamomile, The best Whole herb Medicine in Expression of Sedative Activities

Chamomile, the most frequently used medical plant maybe the next generation of the whole herb to act as a sedative agent in treating patients with sleep disorders.
A quasi-experimental clinical trial, included 77 cases of elderly hospitalized in nursing homes, showed that oral administration of chamomile extract has sedative properties in sleep quality.

Sedation is a form of medicine in induced calm and sleep.

The herbal medicine is also known as camomile, the common name of many species daisy-like plants in the family Asteraceae, used in traditional medicine as antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory constituents and to treat menstrual cramps and sleep disorders, reduce cramping and spastic pain in the bowels, relieve excessive gas and bloating in the intestine, etc.

In support of the sedative effect, chamomile cream also is found to reduce episiotomy pain sedately in primiparous women, according to a triple-blind clinical trial performed on 114 eligible women at Ommolbanin Hospital in Mashhad, Iran in 2014.

Dr. McKay DL said, " Chamomile has moderate antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, and significant antiplatelet activity Animal model studies indicate potent antiinflammatory action, some antimutagenic and cholesterol-lowering activities, as well as antispasmodic and anxiolytic effects" and "(Unfortunately) However, human studies are limited, and clinical trials examining the purported sedative properties of chamomile tea are absent."

In fact, in the investigated hypnotic activities of chamomile and passiflora extracts using sleep-disturbed model rats, researchers at the Okayama University insisted, chamomile extract at a dose of 300 mg/kg exerted significantly decrease sleep latency.
The study also suggested chamomile extract is a herb having benzodiazepine-like hypnotic activity.

Taking all together, Chamomile may be helpful to aid calm and sleep through its sedative effects, but intake of the correct amount should only be given by qualified herbalist

Herbal Turmeric, the Best Functional Herb Which Processes Anti Diseases Associated with Chronic Low Grade Inflammation Potential

Inflammation is a natural response induced by the immune system in which the white blood cells in the first line of defense try to destroy the harmful pathogens before they can enter the body to multiply in the acute phase of infection

However, overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines in this phase can cause damage to the nearby healthy cells, leading abnormal production of collagen ratio in the initiation of scars forming.

Most pathogens are stopped in the acute phase of infection, depending on the location and the size of the wound and tissues damage.

If the immune system can not kill off all invaded pathogens with a set of period of time, it will compromise, leading to the low-grade chronic inflammation with the persistent production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the affected area.

Long-term low-grade inflammation ultimately leads to tissues and organs damage, inducing a number of chronic illness, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Symptoms of low-grade chronic inflammation include body pain as in arthritis, constant fatigue and insomnia as in cancer, depression, anxiety and mood disorders due to pain. gastrointestinal complications like constipation, diarrhea, and acid reflux, unintended weight loss or gain depending on the infected tissues and organs.

According to statistics, chronic inflammatory diseases affects approximately 350 million people worldwide and nearly 43 million people in the United States or almost 20% of the population. The prevalence of diseases associated with chronic inflammation is anticipated to increase persistently for the next 30 years, causing a financial burden on the economy and health care sector.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native in demagogical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

With an aim to find a natural compound for the treatment of diseases associated with chronic inflammation, including cancers, researchers examined the effects of the turmeric through its bioactive components.
According to the review of previous studies, turmeric oil, present in turmeric, can enhance the bioavailability of curcumin.

In other words, essential oil isolated from turmeric in the form of curcumin-free turmeric (CFT) components is more effective for the treatment of chronic inflammatory disease compared to other extracts.

In the components analysis, turmerin, turmerone, elemene, furanodiene, curdione, bisacurone, cyclocurcumin, calebin A, and germacrene were all contributed to the efficacy of the curcumin-free turmeric (CFT).

In examining the effect of ar-turmerone (ATM) and turmerones (TUR, a mixture of 5 sesquiterpenes including ATM) against disease associated with inflammation, researchers found that both CUR and ATM inhibited lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced expression of inducible forms of inflammation by exhibiting the production of free radicals and protein involved overexpression proinflammatory cytokines.

Furthermore, ATM prevented LPS-induced translocation of certain inflammatory genes.

In a colitis model, oral administration of TUR significantly protected the large bowel against 2% dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced shortening of the large bowel by 52-58% and colon carcinogenesis.

Moreover, at a low dose, TUR markedly suppressed adenoma multiplicity by 73%, compared to the range of 63-69% of CUR.

Also, the combination of CUR and TUR at both low and high doses showed a complete abolish of tumor formation.

Based on the findings, Murakami A, the lead scientist in the chronic inflammatory disease team wrote, "we consider that its use in combination with CUR may become a powerful method for prevention of inflammation-associated colon carcinogenesis".

Taken altogether, turmeric in the form of essential oil, CUR, and TUR may be considered herbal remedies for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with chronic inflammation, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
