Ginger, Relieves Pain and Reduced Disability of Patients with Osteoarthritis

Ginger may have a potential and positive effect in ameliorating the symptoms of pain and complication of reduced quality of life in patients with osteoarthritis, some scientists suggested.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic condition of a type of joint disease characterized by the breaking down of joint cartilage and underlying bone due to the “wear and tear” of joints over time.

Some researchers suggested that OA is a degenerative disease characterized by “low-grade inflammation” in the cartilage and synovium, affecting the joint structure and progressive deterioration of cartilage.

According to the statistic from the NIH, osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disorder in the US. Among adults, 60 years of age or older the prevalence of symptomatic knee and sadly OA affects approximately 10% in men and 13% in women.

Epidemiological strongly suggested that obese and overweight which have a strong impact on the weight-bearing joints, the genetic preposition of a patient can make such patient more susceptible to the disease compared to others do not, people with a joint injury that did heal properly at the younger age and people with occupations that require standing for long periods of time, repetitive bending, heavy lifting or other movements and the increase in age are associated to the increased risk of the onset of the disease.

The most common symptoms of osteoarthritis are joint pain and stiffness.

Dr. Giuseppe Musumeci, the lead author in the study "Osteoarthritis in the XXIst Century: Risk Factors and Behaviours that Influence Disease Onset and Progression" suggested that besides the risk factors mentioned above, dietary factors also play an important role in the onset of the disease.

In the dietary aspect in the induction of OA, the research team wrote, "This diet (The Western diet) is mainly constituted by preservative and harmful substances, such as animal fat and glucose excessive concentration and lack of nutritional factors, such as vitamins and nutrient minerals essential for our body. Moreover, the bad dietary habits may predispose people to obesity, which is responsible for both metabolic destroying processes affecting the cartilage and overload of the joints, especially hips and knees".

And, " quantity and quality of nutrient intake. Low intake of vitamin D and vitamin C is a possible risk factor for knee OA, while certain food groups, such as milk and dairy products, meat and poultry are beneficial for knee OA. Thus we could affirm that nutritional imbalance, combined with endocrine abnormalities, may be involved in the pathogenesis of OA".

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

With an aim to reaffirm the traditional use of ginger for the treatment of osteoarthritis, a joint review led by the Copenhagen University Hospital, Bispebjerg, and Frederiksberg were conducted to assess the clinical efficacy and safety of oral ginger for the symptomatic treatment of osteoarthritis (OA).

The study was carried out by searching the randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing oral ginger treatment with placebo in OA patients aged >18 years satisfied the predetermined guidelines and criteria, including the outcomes of the reduction in pain and disability.

Out of 122 retrieved references, 117 were discarded, only 5 five trials (593 patients) were selected for meta-analyses.

All 5 remained studies suggested that ginger intake scored a statistically significant pain reduction.

Furthermore, application of ginger in subjects with osteoarthritis demonstrates a statistically significant reduction in disability compared to control.

However, according to the returned questionnaires from the participants, researchers surprisingly found that patients given ginger are more than twice as likely to discontinue treatment compared to placebo.

Dr. Mozaffari-Khosravi H, the lead author, launched a joint study to determine the ginger powder effects in relieving pain and inflammation in patients with osteoarthritis.

120 participants selected for the randomized double-blind placebo-controlled 3-month clinical trial for knee osteoarthritis were randomly assigned to one of two groups: the ginger group (GG) or the placebo group (PG).

Ginger selected group was given capsules containing 500 mg of ginger powder, while the PG group was given capsules filled with 500 mg starch.

At the baseline, proinflammatory cytokine concentrations did not differ by group, observed by the participant's blood sample.

After 3 months, GG showed a significant reduction of cytokines compared to the PG.

In the final report, the research team wrote, "ginger supplementation may have promising benefits for knee osteoarthritis".

These results reconfirming the use of ginger for the treatment of osteoarthritis in traditional medicine with no side effects

Fennel, A Potent Chemo-Preventive and Modulatory Functional Herb

Fennel may have a potential and positive effect in modulated the effect of chemo drugs through its chemomodulatory activity, some scientists suggested.

The expression of fennel application in enhanced chemopreventive response was evident in animal models from the reduced tumor burden in reduced cancer cells proliferation and apoptosis and reduced percentage of tumor through some different publications.

The results were reported by several respectable institute including Jawaharlal Nehru University and published on online medical literature.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean, used in traditional and herbal medicine as warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,...

According to the Jawaharlal Nehru University, in evaluating the chemopreventive effect of different doses of test diet of Foeniculum vulgare Mill (Fennel) seeds on DMBA-induced skin and B(a)P-induced forestomach papilloma genesis in Swiss albino mice, application of fennel seeds displayed a significant reduction in the skin and the forestomach tumor incidence and tumor multiplicity as compared to the control group.

Biochemical assays showed a significant increase in the content/activities of phase I and II enzymes especially in the case of a 6% test diet, in detoxifying poisonous compounds caused by the injection of DMBA, through significant enhancement of antioxidant activities.

Further examination also found that injection of fennel seed stimulated production of antioxidant enzyme in the body tissue in repaired damage precipitated by peroxidation through lactate dehydrogenase activity.

Dr. Singh B, the lead author said, "A significant enhancement in the activities of antioxidant enzymes were observed especially at 4% and 6%" and "glyoxalase I(with function as an enzymatic defense against glycation) activity and the content of reduced glutathione (antioxidant) were significantly elevated".

Additionally, in the examine the effect of fennel bioactive compound anethole in chemo modulatory activity against the onset and spread of cancer, researchers found that application of fennel oil by inhibited the activated expression of NF-kappa B, a gene-altering and inflammation in triggering molecule in the development of various solid tumors through stimulated cancer proliferation.

Also, anethole injection reduced levels of tumor necrosis factor (TNF, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, TNFα, cachexin, or cachectin), a cell-signaling protein (cytokine) involved in systemic inflammation and one of the cytokines that make up the acute phase reaction. However, at a certain stage of cancer, gene expression in promoted cancer apoptosis is alternated, TNF changes from a cancer killer to a cancer promoter.

Additionally, with abundant fiber, fennel demonstrated a strong effect in the removal of toxins from the colon and therefore may be helpful in colon cancer prevention.

Dr. After taking into account other co and confounders said, " Fennel contains flavonoid anti-oxidants compounds like kaempferol and quercetin which helps eliminate harmful free radicals from the body....".

In other words, fennel exerted chemo modulatory activity also through its flavonoid anti-oxidants compounds like kaempferol and quercetin in inhibited overexpression of free radicals and free radical chain reactive in protected against cytotoxicity in induction cells damage and alternated cell DNA in the facilitated onset of cancer.

Taking all together, fennel and its bioactive compound may be considered as a chemopreventive and modulatory functional food for reduced risk and treatment of various types of cancers.

Herbal Turmeric Protects the Kidneys Against Drugs, Heavy Metals and Substances Toxicity

The kidneys are a pair of kidney shape organs located on either side of your spine with a function to filter out the wastes from the blood before passing the wastes through urinary secretion.

More than a detoxed organ, the kidneys also maintain the body fluid balance, regulate the production of red blood cells and high blood pressure.

Kidney damage can be acute such as an overdose of toxin or chronic. Acute kidney diseases can be cured if the underlying cause is found.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a slow and progressive disease that can lead to kidney failure over time.

The advance of CKD can cause dangerous levels of fluid, electrolytes, and waste build-up in the body.

According to statistics, approximately 14 percent of the US general population suffers from CKD. Believe it or not, more than 661,000 Americans have kidney failure. Of these, 468,000 individuals are on dialysis, and roughly 193,000 live with a functioning kidney transplant.

Out of many risk factors associated with CKD, some researchers suggested high blood pressure is one most prevalent risk factors found in most patients.

The Natural Kidney Foundation wrote, "More than half the people with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have high blood pressure. High blood pressure increases the chance that kidney disease will get worse"

And "Following your treatment plan carefully and keeping your blood pressure under control can help to prevent these complications".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
On finding a potential compound with the kidney protective property, researchers investigated curcumin, a major phenolic compound the rhizome of the Curcuma species anti kidney toxicity.

In glucose, tartrazine, induced toxicity, curcumin protected the kidney against DNA damage in leucocytes.

In a streptozotocin-induced diabetes rat model, curcumin protected the kidney against overexpression of free radical to cause kidney cell damage through its antioxidant activity.

In the long-term heavy metal model, curcumin inhibited the toxic effect caused by the accumulation of the metal in the induction of kidney cell damage.

In an animal model induced cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury by injection cisplatin, curcumin enhanced the function of cisplatin-resistant cancer cells and decrease its unwanted side effects.

More interestingly, curcumin inhibited the nicotine receptors on kidney cells that link nicotine to accelerated kidney damage in cigarette smokers

In other words. if the kidneys are less able to excrete nicotine, in long term, accumulated extracellular fluid and blood volumes increase, which can lead to severe kidney damage.

In other studies, kidney damage caused maleate, malathion, nicotine, cisplatin, gentamicin, and methotrexate also reversed by the injection of curcumin, similar to those of the aforementioned substances.

Taken altogether, turmeric and its bioactive compound curcumin may be considered remedies for the prevention and treatment of kidney damage, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, used in herbal medicine for thousands of year as anaphrodisiac herb and considered as Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts.

Osteoporosis is a condition of thinning of bone and bone tissues as a result of the loss of bone density over a long period of times.

In a total of 60, 3-month-old male rats orchidectomized and divided into five groups with each group either received soy-free food (C), estradiol (E), testosterone (T) or Vitex agnus castus in different concentrations (AC high/AC low) for 12 weeks, rats treated with Vitex agnus castus at highest dose displayed a recover of 88.4% of trabecular bone area, 80.7% of trabecular number and 66.9% of the number of trabecular nodes compared with other administrations.
The study also found out that Vitex agnus castus is more protective in treating osteoprorsis in male population in compared female counter part.

Dr. Sehmisch S, the lead author said, " Vitex agnus castus demonstrated osteoprotective effects in males. It preserves the cortical as well as the trabecular bone and might be a safe alternative for HRT".

Further more, In the study to compare group of animals (n = 8) treated subcutaneously (s.c.) with 60 mg/kg of Vac essential oil once a day for 3 weeks and control animals (n = 8) received sterile olive oil s.c. by the same schedule, Vitex agnus-castus L. (Vac) essential oil treated group also exerted a significant bone metabolism in 16-month-old male Wistar rats.

The osteoporosis protection can be observed through the lower of Serum osteocalcin (OC) and calcium (Ca2+) in Vitex agnus-castus L. (Vac) essential oil and decreased of bone turnover treated group in compared control in middle-aged male rats..

Taking together, Chaste tree berry showed a strong support in reduced early onset of osteoporosis of male gander through improved bone metabolism and calcium status, but further large size and multi centers studies are necessary to validate this potency.

Herbal Chaste Tree Berry The Best Antioxidant for Prevention and Treatment of Aging Chronic Diseases

Chaste tree berry may process a strong effect in reduced risk of free radical progression in inducing various diseases, the renowned institute suggested.

Antioxidants are chemical compound with function in inhibited oxidation caused by production of free radicals with an aim to reduce risk of oxidative damage to our body.

According to the Faculty of Pharmacy, Ege University, in the observation of the chemical activity of different preparations of Chaste tree berry, researchers showed that water and ethanol extract content are far stronger antioxidant activity in compared n-hexane extracts.

In vitro antioxidant assays, the newly differentiated ingredients isolated from the Chaste tree berry, EtOAc extract displayed a significant antioxidant property in reduced free radicals caused by brain homogenate. at the concentration-dependent effect tested by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrasyl (DPPH) free radical assay (IC(50) = 68 microg/mL) in compared fractions of MeOH-H(2)O and n-hexane fraction.

The study also suggested that the efficacy of antioxidant effect in the extract may have resulted from the recently discovered phytochemicals, flavonoid constituents EtOAc extract, casticin, vitexin, and orientin as viewed in the tested essay.

More importantly, in support of the above differentiation, a study of mice subcutaneously injected with d-galactose (500 mg/kg/d for 45 days) induced aging and natural aging. administrated extract of Vitex (600 mg/kg/bid for 7 days by gavage) to 72 female NMRI mice (48 3-month-old normal mice and 24 18-24-month-old mice), weighing 30-35 g randomly divided into six groups: control, Vitex, d-galactose, Vitex + d-galactose, Aging, and Vitex + Aging, groups treated with chaste tree berry expressed a superior effect in restored estrous cycle and damage of uterus and ovarian tissues, through antioxidant activities in ameliorated oxidative stress and aging diseases.

Truly, mice treated with extract of Chaste tree berry only showed a reduced presence of free radicals but also improved hormone expression in natural and d-galactose induced aging.

Taking together, there is no doubt that Chaste tree berry displayed a significant antioxidant potential in ameliorated risk of free radical in induced chronic diseases, but a large amount of intake should be taken with care.

Chaste Tree Berry The Best Anticonvulsant Herbal Medicine

Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, used in herbal medicine for thousands of year as an aphrodisiac herb and considered as Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts.

In a study using animal model of maximal electroshock seizures (MES) and induced seizures (MES) by administrated pentylenetetarazole (PTZ), intake of ethanolic leaf extract of Vitex-negundo, at doses of 250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg p.o, exerted a significant of postictal depression, an altered state of consciousness after an epileptic seizure in the dose of 1000 mg/kg body weight in comparison to control but no effects in other applications.

At doses of (1000 mg/kg, po), the ethanolic leaf extract exhibited a 50% half-life protection in chronic seizures after 24-hour injection against PTZ induced seizures. Researchers also found that the efficacy of the extract at that doses is the result of valproic acid, a major ingredient found in Chaste tree berry.

Dr. Tandon VR and co-author Dr. Gupta RK. of the study said, " The anticonvulsant activity of Vitex-negundo has not been found quite effective with standard drugs".

Furthermore, because of the potentiation of diphenylhydantoin and valporic acid isolated Vitex-negundo displayed a significant effect in treating animal models, the extract may be used as an adjuvant therapy along with standard anticonvulsants.

Additionally, according to the Baqiyatallah University of Medical Sciences, hydrophilic extract of Vitex agnus castus fruit (Vitex) administered doses (60, 120 or 180 mg/kg) showed a strong anticonvulsant activity even at low dose (60 mg/kg) of Vitex by increasing the afterdischarge(AD) threshold and decrease the afterdischarge duration ( ADD) and and stage 5 duration (S5D).

Promisingly, at the highest dose, the extract inhibited significantly the seizure stage (P<0.01) and reduced or prevented epileptic activity as demonstrated by reduction of ADD and S5D (length of convulsion) in a dose-dependent manner.

More importantly, methanolic extract (ME) of the leaves of V. negundo salso showed to process the analgesic properties and potentiated analgesia demonstrated by morphine and pethidine in protection against strychnine and leptazole induced convulsions.

Taking together, Chaste Tree Berry may be one of the next-generation therapeutic herbal medicine consisted a strong effect for prevention and treatment of seizure as a result of abundant phytochemicals, but intake of the large amount should be taken with care to reduce the risk of toxicity.

According to the study, researchers set out criteria and guideline to investigate the effect of fennel in gram-negative bacterium Helicobacter pylori (HP), the microorganisms have been associated with the development of gastritis and peptic ulcer disease to confirm the theory used in traditional medicine fennel to treat a wide range of ailments, including gastrointestinal (GI) disorders such as dyspepsia, gastritis and peptic ulcer disease (PUD), application of methanol extracts of botanicals with a MIC of 50 microg/mL included Achillea millefolium, Foeniculum vulgare (seed), exerted a significant inhibitory effect against all susceptibility of 15 HP strains.

These results suggested that injection of fennel displayed potential in balanced the ratio of microorganisms in the gastrointestinal tract, thus improve the function in absorbed and distributed nutrients to the body and reassured the herbal medicine used in practice for the treatment of numbers symptoms of
digestive disorder.

Furthermore, in animal model with rat induced gastric lesions by injection of ethanol, application of aqueous extracts of Foeniculum vulgare (FVE) showed a strong activity in inhibited the ulcerogenic expression through its antioxidant activities..

In observation of the efficacy of 60 minutes pre-administration of the doses of 75, 150, and 300 mg/kg, with famotidine, histamine H₂ receptor antagonist with function to inhibit stomach acid production, used at the dose of 20 mg/kg, before injection of ethanol, researchers found that

* Pre-treatment of all dose exerted a significant gastric protective effect in reduced injure and damage caused by injection of ethanol.

* Fennel extract demonstrated a therapeutic activity linearly in compared to other doses and control at a dose of 300 mg/kg

* These activities was associated to reduce the malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, a marker in expression of severe levels of oxidative stress.

Additional analysis, also suggested that fennel stimulated gastro-protect effect through its antioxidants and facilitated production of antioxidants found in the body tissues in inhibited the overexpression of free radicals, thus maintaining the ratio of microorganisms in the digestive tract and its functioning.

After, taking into account of other co and confounders, researchers also suggested that the result in part may also attributed to antioxidant in ameliorated lipid peroxidation.

The above differentiation were supported by the joint report lead by the Joint Keio University in the investigation of fennel properties in associated to functional dyspepsia (FD), a functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by persistent or recurrent postprandial upper abdominal discomfort and epigastric pain.

Truly, Delayed gastric emptying and impaired gastric accommodation was found to play important roles in the development of FD.

Anethole (1-methoxy-4-((E)-propenyl)-benzene), a major component of fennel essential oil, in in rodents exerted a huge effect in improved clonidine-induced delayed gastric emptying without harming to normal gastric emptying in mice, orally.

Also, application of fennel oil plus Anchu-san (a Japanese herbal medicine containing anethole) also demonstrated a important activity in reduced risk of functional dyspepsia (FD) through restoring the delayed gastric emptying.

In other words, anethole processes a gastroprotective efficacy through stimulating gastric accommodation.
Taken together, whole fennel, fennel essential oil and its bioactive compound anethole may be used as secondary application in reduced risk and treatment of digestive disorder. Adding a portion of fennel to your diet may improve the digestive function in absorption nutrients and fluids from the food intake.

However, intake of supplements should be taken with extreme care as an overdose may cause acute liver toxicity.
