Caffeinated Coffee, The Beverage Which Protects Skin Against Aging by Increasing Micro-Vascular Function in Skin, Scientists Reveal

Moderate intake of caffeinated coffee regularly may have a particular effect in protecting the skin against aging, a joint institutes study suggested.

Skin aging is a natural process that cannot be reversed. However, by looking after our skin through a change of diet and lifestyle and reduced skin exposure to substances which have a potential to cause skin damage, skin aging process can be delayed.

Dr. Silke K. Schagen, the lead author in the study of Discovering the link between nutrition and skin aging wrote, "Vitamins, carotenoids, tocopherols, flavonoids and a variety of plant extracts have been reported to possess potent antioxidant properties and have been widely used in the skin care industry either as topically applied agents or oral supplements in an attempt to prolong youthful skin appearance"

These results suggested that regular intake of fruits and vegetable with abundant nutrients and antioxidants may have a strong effect in delaying skin aging process.

Additionally, in the study of lifestyle and risk of skin aging in Japanese, Dr. Keiko Asakura, the lead scientists suggested, "Smoking status and topical sun protection were significantly associated with signs of visible skin aging in this study population" and " (There are) significant differences between sexes in the severity of hyperpigmentation, texture, and pores, but not wrinkling".

More precisely, skin aging can be caused by a number of factors, including
* The intrinsic aging of skin are factors that cannot be controlled, such as gene inherited from the parents, hormone change and cellular recession due to aging.

* The extrinsic aging of skin are factors that can or cannot be prevented, such as sun exposure, smoking, air pollution, bad eating habits, and physical inactivity.

Coffee, a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roasted bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

In the review of coffee caffeine effect in skin blood flow, researchers at the study lead by the Linköping University showed that intake of caffeinated coffee exhibits a stronger expression in increased skin microvascular response to transdermal iontophoresis of acetylcholine (ACh)( non‐invasively introduce vasoactive drugs in regulating the neurotransmitter at neuromuscular junctions), in compared to decaffeinated coffee intake group.

The study also found that coffee caffeine intake displayed a significant effect in microvascular responses in increasing blood flow to the skin but decreasing blood flow in the fingertips, during the first hour after of drinking;

These result suggested that caffeine in coffee showed an enormous activity in increasing blood flow to the body's skin.

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study performed in 27 healthy volunteers with oral intake of a cup either caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee and reactive hyperemia of finger blood flow assessed by laser Doppler flowmetry, within an interval of more than 2 days, the same experimental protocol was repeated with another coffee in a crossover manner, researchers showed that caffeinated coffee intake group demonstrated a slightly decreased finger blood flow in compared to decaffeinated coffee intake group.

According to the index of post-occlusive reactive hyperemia, microvascular endothelial function, in compared with decaffeinated coffee intake, caffeine contained showed an important effect in enhanced microvascular function in healthy individuals.

Taking together, the findings suggested that intake of coffee caffeine exerted a significant effect in promoted skin blood flow through a microvascular function which may have a strong impact in reducing the risk of skin aging.

Detoxification: Fennel, The Potent and Functional Food Which Protects the Liver Against Toxicity

Fennel may be considered a functional food in exhibited liver protective effect against toxicity, some scientists suggested.

Liver protection in an action that prevents injury and damage of the liver, regardless of the causes.

Researchers do not know the exact cause of liver disease. However, they do know that genes inherited from the parents, aging and viral and bacterial infection are associated with an increased risk of liver disease.

Additionally, long-term excessive alcohol drinking and obesity are also some prevalent risk factors for the onset of liver disease.

Untreated liver disease or liver disease that is not treated properly overtime can increase the risk of cirrhosis, a leading cause of liver failure and a life-threatening condition.

Dr. William Nseir, the lead author in the assessment of the role of diet and lifestyle changes in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease wrote, "A combination of dietary modifications and increased physical activity remains the mainstay of NAFLD management. It is hard to maintain this mode of management; however, it seems to have significant long-term benefits" and "Furthermore, NAFLD patients, whether obese or not, should be educated that a healthy diet and physical activity have benefits beyond weight reduction".

These results suggested that change of diet and lifestyle with moderate exercise may have a strong effect in the prevention of liver disease.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus, belonging to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.

The herb has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,...

In the evaluation of the liver protective effect against acute hepatotoxicity induced by carbon tetrachloride (CLL4) in the rat model, researchers found that oral administration of essential oil isolated from the fennel exerts a strong activity in the decrease of levels of serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and bilirubin, the potential causes of liver damage through their toxic effects.

Further analysis insisted that the hepatoprotective activity of the essential oil was attributed to the expression of phytochemical constituents d-limonene and β-myrcene in the inhibition of the levels of carbon tetrachloride in catalyzing liver toxicity and initiating liver lesion and liver fibrosis.

Additional differentiation of the hepatic fibrosis model in rats induced by subcutaneous injection with 40% CCl4 olive oil mixture with 94 male SD rats given high lipoid-low protein animal feeds for 5 weeks then randomly divided into six groups, including blank control group (A-group), 8 rats were feed in normal, prevention model control group (B-group), 10 rats given saline solution by intragastric administration during make of hepatic fibrosis model and FVM prevention group (C-group), 10 rats given FVM by intragastric administration during make of hepatic fibrosis model; model control group (D-group), FVM treatment group (E-group) and Fuzhenghuayu treatment group (F-group), after assessing the results from the 5-th weekend, A, B, C- group rats sacrificed at the 6-th, 7-th, 8-th, 9-th weekend and 4-6 rats in D, E, F-group sacrificed., researchers indicated that

* The expression of alpha-smooth muscle actin(a-SMA) associated with liver damage and correlated positively in recurrent HCV hepatitis group are significantly higher in the HBV cirrhosis detected by immunohistochemical staining assay.

* Serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), an amino acid found in proteins and intermediate in cellular energy production presented in the blood of tested subjects may be an indication of liver damage.

Low levels of ALT are found in the blood profiles of healthy individuals.

* Similar to ALT, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) is an enzyme associated with the liver parenchymal cell and presented in low levels in the blood of healthy individual but significantly higher in liver damage tested rats.

* Hyaluronic acid (HA) is distributed widely throughout connective, epithelial, and neural tissues, the prediction of liver damage, particularly in the risk of liver fibrosis.

* Increased levels of Laminin (LN), a protein of the extracellular matrix, is also associated with substantial risk with the development of liver fibrosis.

* Overexpression of levels of 8 - hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) is another indication of oxidative stress and also considered as a critical biomarker of carcinogenesis.

The increased levels of above expressions suggested substantial damage to the liver caused by ingestion of CCL4 in the non-fennel treatment group
However, application of fennel in such groups inhibited the overexpression of toxicity caused by injection of CCL4 by restoring the normal levels of Serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), hyaluronic acid (HA), laminin (LN) and 8 - hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG).

Further analysis also showed that oral administration of fennel inhibited the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) in precipitated oxidative stress through lipid peroxidation.

Some researchers suggested that levels of MDA may be used as a biomarker in the assessment of oxidative stress status in patients with liver disease or cancer.

Moreover, injection of fennel exerted liver protective and anti-inflammatory effects through its antioxidants overexpression and improved production of natural antioxidants in the host tissue such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase levels in inhibited oxidative stress initiated by CCL4

Precisely, fennel significantly decreased expression serums of ALT, AST, HA, and LN and MDA, 8-OHdG, fiber and a-SMA expression in the FVM group and lowered inflammation grade and fibrosis stage compared to control group.

Dr. Zhang ZG, the lead authors, after taking into account of other co-founders said, "Foeniculum Vulgare Mill declines liver inflammation response, and prevent the hepatic fibrosis progression,, this may be due to its effects of antioxidative results".

The findings suggested that fennel with abundant bioactive anethole may be considered a functional food in exhibited hepatoprotective effect through its anti-inflammatory and antioxidants activities.

Green tea, The Beverage Which Processes Anti Viral Activity Against Onset of Pneumonitis

Scientists may have found a beverage processed antivirus property for a cure of pneumonitis, some studies suggested.

Pneumonitis is an inflammatory disease that affects the walls of the alveoli in the lungs, in most cases, it is caused by a virus.

However, irritants, ranging from airborne molds to chemotherapy drugs, have been linked to the onset of the condition.

Most common symptoms of are difficulty breathing, often accompanied by a dry cough.

Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and Western world.

In the concerns of the widespread of some virus in the induction of pneumonitis, researchers at the Kobe University conducted an investigation to examine whether green tea Epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate (EGCG), the major catechin component of green tea possessed antiviral activities against a wide range of DNA viruses and RNA viruses, that cause pneumonitis.

At the final report of the experiment, researchers suggested that EGCG appears most likely to inhibits the early stage of infections, such as attachment, entry, and membrane fusion, by interfering with viral membrane proteins.

Also, according to the observation of the relationships between structure and antiviral activity of catechin derivatives, researchers found that the 3-galloyl and 5'-OH group of catechin derivatives appears critical to antiviral activities in the early phase of infection.

In addition of fatty acid derivative, the combination also exerts an increase viral and cellular membrane permeability.

These results suggested that EGCG-fatty acid monoesters improved greater antiviral activities against different types of viruses, probably due to their increased affinity for virus and cellular membranes, compared to the use of EGCG alone.

Dr. Kaihatsu K, the lead author said, after taking into account of other co and confounders, "(The) application of EGCG-fatty acid derivatives for the prevention and treatment of viral infections".

Furthermore, a study in the evaluation of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), the main constituent of green tea, anti-infective properties.launched by the University of Duisburg-Essen, showed that application of EGCG demonstrated a significant activity on orthomyxoviridae and Flaviviridae and other human pathogens like human immunodeficiency virus, influenza A virus and the hepatitis C virus.through interfering with the replication cycle of DNA viruses like hepatitis B virus, herpes simplex virus,.... and adenovirus.

Additionally, in an experimental skin contact model for influenza virus transmission to evaluate the use of a green tea solution as a first-hand disinfectant, researchers strong agreed that green tea displays a strong antiviral effect in inhibiting the infectivity of the virus on the skin cell layer.

This result suggested that green tea may be used as a non-pharmaceutical washing solution in reducing human transmission of viral infection, including the virus that causes pneumonitis.

Taken all together, green tea and its bioactive EGCG may be considered a functional food in protecting the lung tissue against the onset of viral pneumonitis.

Intake of green tea supplement EGCG should be taken with extreme care as acute liver diseases have been reported in many instances.

Green Tea and its Bioactive Epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) Inhibited Fibromyalgia Caused by Inflammatory Rheumatic Disorders

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reducing the onset, progression, and treatment of inflammatory-rheumatic-disorders-induced fibromyalgia, some scientists suggested.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic condition characterized by muscle and soft tissue pain, In other words, patients with the syndrome are experiencing widespread pain and increased sensitivity to pain.

The condition affects over 10 million (3.6% of the population) people in the US.

The inflammatory rheumatic disorder is a condition of autoimmune disorders caused by inflammatory connective tissues, joint, and vessels of the body, including rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and vasculitis.

The exact causes of fibromyalgia are unknown. However, researchers do know that certain risk factor, including genetic mutation inherited from the parents, age, emotional and physic abuse in the childhood, gender, and posttraumatic stress disorder are associated with the higher risk of the syndrome develops.

Some researchers also suggested that chronic arthritis, persistent stress, anxiety, and depression and physical inactivity are associated with the increased risk of the onset of the incidence.

Conventional medicine such as pregabalin (Lyrica), duloxetine (Cymbalta), and milnacipran (Savella) used in pain management in patients with FM may be effective, however, they can induce some common side effects including gastrointestinal discomforts, constipation, dry mouth.

In some patient, intake of the medicine may cause the side effect of insomnia, high blood pressure, and irregular heartbeats.

Green tea is a precious drink processed numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

According to the Cairo University, as many as 15-30% of patients with classic inflammatory rheumatic disorders also have co-morbid fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) compared to the rate of only 2% of the prevalence of FMS in the general population (2%).

These results suggested that rheumatological syndromes have a strong implication in the development of fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) compared to other initiators such as stress.

Therefore, patients with chronic rheumatic diseases are capable of triggering condition of fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS).

Due to the highly correlated rheumatologic disease and FMS component, researchers postulated "Considerations of the FMS component in the management of rheumatologic diseases increase the likelihood of the success of the treatment" and "(prevented) FMS in misdiagnosed as an autoimmune disorder"

In the study of the effect of green tea's active ingredient, epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) in risk of inflammatory rheumatic disorders in collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) in mice, researchers found that application of green tea demonstrates a substantially marked inhibition of the inflammatory mediators cyclooxygenase (COX) -2 in converting arachidonic acid to stimulate the production of proinflammatory cytokine prostaglandin H2, in the catalyzation of symptoms of inflammation in the muscles.

Furthermore, green tea EGCG oral ingestion also inhibited levels of interferon gamma in precipitated inflammation by modulating T-cells and natural killer cells activated by antigens, mitogens or alloantigens to the site of infection.

Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) involved in systemic inflammation, one of the cytokines that make up the acute phase reaction in mice was also inhibited by injection of green tea EGCG.

These results suggested that green tea ameliorated symptoms expression of inflammatory rheumatic disorders, through attenuating production pro-inflammatory factors without reducing the healing progression of injured tissue.

The above differentiation was supported by the study of green tea extract GTE in ameliorating rat adjuvant-induced arthritis.

According to the researchers, a daily per-oral administration of GTE (200 mg/kg) reduced expression of RA through reducing the levels of MCP-1/CCL2 in expression (which can also be treated by biological agents, such as antibodies and inhibitory peptides) of a variety of diseases characterized by mononuclear cell infiltration involved substantial biological and genetic evidence, including RA.
and GROα/CXCL1 in the recruitment of inflammatory cells in the wound healing process after injury in angiogenesis and in the formation of granulation tissue of wounds.

Additionally, application of green tea beside attenuated the expression of proinflammatory factors.

Green tea also exhibited the production of chemokine receptors CCR-1, CCR-2, CCR-5 by reducing the direct communication between the innate and adaptive immune responses that initiate the development of inflammatory responses. through inactivation of leukocytes in the inflamed tissues in the contribution to the pathogenesis of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases and CXCR1 receptor in binding to IL-8 to reduce the expression some inflammatory cytokines, such as epidermal growth factor (EGF) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α).

Some researchers suggested that application of green tea extract may also reduce the symptoms of arthritis through expression of IL-6 levels, as increased levels of Il-6 was associated to the presence and progression of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) found in conventional clinical and laboratory indices and MMP-2 activity in activated immune inflammatory response through inducing production of pro-inflammatory factors.

Taken together, green tea and its bioactive compound such as EGCG may have a profound and therapeutic effect in reducing the onset, progression, and treatment of fibromyalgia-induced by inflammatory rheumatic disorders through modulating the production of pro and anti-inflammatory proteins.

However, intake of green tea supplement should be taken with extreme care due to recent reports of acute liver toxicity.

Beware of Excessive Coffee and Coffee Caffeine Intake In the Risk Of Pregnancy Loss, Scientists Suggest

Bad news for pregnant women and coffee lovers, excessive maternal caffeinated coffee intake may associate to increased risk of pregnancy loss, some studies suggested

Pregnancy loss is a natural death of an embryo or fetus before it is born, including spontaneous abortion, miscarry, stillbirth...

Coffee, becoming a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roast bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

In a total of 130 456 participants and 3429 cases in fourteen included studies, researchers found that women with
* No or very low caffeine intake, have a relative risk of pregnancy loss of 1.02.

* Moderate intake (150-349 mg/d) showed an increased relative risk of 1·16.

* High intake (350-699 mg/d) showed a relative risk of 1·40.

* Very high intake (≥ 700 mg/d) showed a relative risk of 1·72

The risks of pregnancy loss were increased linearly and correlatively to numbers of a cup of coffee intake per day.

According to the joint study led by the National University of Singapore and National University Health System, additional intake of 1 cup of coffee in women who are regular coffee drinkers similar to 100 mg/d increment caffeine intake was associated with 7% higher risk of pregnancy loss.

Furthermore, a case-control and cohort review study reported in English, the exposure of caffeine/coffee consumption during pregnancy, from selected 26 studies included (20 of caffeine and eight of coffee) suggested that the relative risk ratio of pregnancy loss due to caffeine consumption was 1.32

The study also found that risk of pregnancy loss increased substantially to 19% for every increased caffeine intake of 150 mg/day and every additional 2 cups of coffee intake, the risk of pregnancy loss increased by 8%.

The findings suggested that excessive maternal caffeinated coffee intake is associated to increase the risk of pregnancy loss. However, researchers can not explain why? pregnant women with the same health condition and gestation age, some are susceptible to pregnancy loss while others do not.

These results might suggest that although excessive coffee intake during pregnancy is considered a risk factor, there must be some others unknown risk factors involved in the manifestation of the onset of the loss.

Truly, there are many implications associated with pregnancy loss including ages of the father, genetic mutation or polymorphism in the father that can lead to the production abnormal chemicals or hormones by the embryo, sperm quality sperm chromosomes, ..... and unhealthy lifestyle choice of the father may also associate to the risk of pregnancy loss.

Dr. By Dr. Suhasini Inamdar, in the article "A man’s unhealthy lifestyle may also be responsible for a miscarriage: posed in the Economic Time wrote, "Men who drink alcohol heavily also have lower sperm motility and concentration. - Excess coffee consumption can further lead to reduced sperm concentration and count. Men who eat red meat have lower implantation and resultant pregnancy rates as well. Not getting enough vitamin D and vitamin B12"

Taking all together, there is no doubt that excessive intake of coffee during pregnancy-induced high risk of pregnancy loss but according to the statistic, North American women seldom drink more than 4 cups/day so we may be in the safe zones.

Yoga, the Integrated form of Exercise in Alleviating Symptoms of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOs)

Yoga therapy may be considered an integrated form of exercise in reducing symptoms in women with Polycystic ovarian syndrome.

The polycystic ovarian syndrome is an endocrinologic disease among reproductive-age women caused by undeveloped follicles clumping on the ovaries that interfere with the function of the normal ovaries, associated with a high risk for the metabolic disorder.

Sadly, women with PCOs also have a higher risk of menstrual disorders, infertility, abnormal levels of hormone levels.

Certain medical conditions are also found to associate to the onset of PCOs such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, and triglycerides.

Researchers do not know why women who process the same health condition and follow a similar diet pattern, some are susceptible to the onset of the syndrome, while others do not.

However, epidemiological studies suggested that family history of PCOs, fast food diet habits, body mass index and waist circumference are possible risk factors for the development of PCOS.

Some researchers also suggested that the mutated gene inherited from the parents are also a major factor that causes PCOs, including gene CYP11a.

Most common symptoms of PCOs include overexpression of acne, overweight or obesity, abdominal pain, the excessive male pattern of hair growth on the face, nipple area, chest, lower abdomen, bald spots, dark patches. In some women. The syndrome also can lead to psychological symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Treatment of PCOs is totally depended on the presence of the symptoms including medication for treatment of overexpression of hormone androgen and insulin resistance.

Yoga, the ancient technique for harmonized external and internal body well being, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement, and gesture..... has been well known for people in the Western world and some parts in Asia.

In a study of Ninety (90) adolescent (15-18 years) girls from a residential college in Andhra Pradesh satisfied the Rotterdam criteria and randomly assigned into 2 groups with yoga group practiced a holistic yoga module, while the control group practiced a matching set of physical exercises (1 hour/day, for 12 weeks), researchers after adjusting to other co confounders, showed that
*Yoga group expressed a significant change in hormones Anti-müllerian hormone AMH luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and LH/FSH ratio and particularly in hormone testosterone, compared to control.

* Yoga group also showed an improvement of The Ferriman–Gallwey score in evaluating and quantifying Hirsutism.

* There were an insignificant change of FSH and prolactin after intervention in both groups.

*4. More importantly, yoga group displayed favorably in changes of menstrual frequency compared to control

Dr. Nidhi R, the led author after reviewing the efficacy in yoga group, said, "A holistic yoga program for 12 weeks is significantly better than physical exercise in reducing AMH, LH, and testosterone, mFG score for hirsutism, and improving menstrual frequency with nonsignificant changes in body weight, FSH, and prolactin in adolescent PCOS"

The efficacy of yoga practice in reducing the expression of the male pattern of hair growth and changes of menstrual frequency is attributed to meditation and slow breathing in calming the central nervous system in response to hormone production. Thus reducing overexpression of certain hormones that associate to the symptoms of PCOs.

Additionally, in the investigated yoga therapy in the reduced primary symptoms of glucose metabolism and blood lipid levels in adolescent girls with polycystic ovary syndrome in same above group met the Rotterdam criteria for PCOS, researchers found that
* Yoga intervention displays a significant improvement of fasting insulin, fasting blood glucose, and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance compared to control.

* Yoga group also expresses a strong effect in blood lipid values except for high-density lipoprotein cholesterol.

* There was no change of body mass index, waist circumference, hip circumference, and waist-to-hip ratio, in both groups

Interestingly, in the study of possible use of Kapalabhati yoga technique to combat metabolic syndrome (MS) and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), researchers at the Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences conducted a review of published literature from PubMed, Scopus, and found that Kapalabhati may be helpful in reducing symptoms of various features of MS, but its efficacy against PCOS had not been found.

Dr. Ansari RM after adjusting to other aspects said, "since both syndromes arise due to common factor hyperinsulinemia primarily induced by stress in this modern world, it is hypothesized that Kapalabhati holds good against PCOS too ".

How yoga exhibited these kinds of effect are unclear, However, according to the article "Yoga for a Metabolic Makeover" written by CATHERINE GUTHRIE stress relief and feelings of well-being fostered by a regular yoga practice serve to rebalance the nervous system may be the major factor that has a strong effect in the improvement of metabolic syndrome through reducing the overexpression of pro-inflammatory cytokine in facilitating the onset of type 2 diabetes and lipid peroxidation, thus reducing the risk of insulin resistance and high blood cholesterol"

The information collected from the above differentiation suggested that yoga may be used as a secondary and integrated form of exercise combined with standard treatment in reducing the symptoms of PCOs.

Yoga Improves Psychological and Physical Symptoms and Quality of Life in Ulcerative Colitis Patients

Yoga may be used as secondary therapy in improved psychological and physical activities and enhanced quality of life in patients with ulcerative colitis, studies suggested

Ulcerative colitis is one form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) characterized by long-lasting inflammation and ulcers (sores) in the digestive tract.

Yoga, the ancient practice for harmonized external and internal body well being, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement, and gesture..... has been well known for people in the Western world and some parts in Asia.

In the study of a total of 77 patients (75% women; 45.5 ± 11.9 years) with ulcerative colitis in clinical remission due to impaired quality of life randomly assigned to yoga (12 supervised weekly sessions of 90 min; n = 39) researchers indicated that
* Yoga group improved a significant quality of life compared to control after 12 weeks of the lesson, and additionally, at week 12, the improvement in yoga group reached a clinically relevant increase in quality of life.

* Yoga participants also expressed a reduced activity of the disease after 24 weeks.

* Only 3 patient experienced serious adverse events
Dr. Cramer H, the led author after adjusting to other factors said, "Yoga can be considered as a safe and effective ancillary intervention for patients with ulcerative colitis and impaired quality of life".

The improvement of quality of the life in tested subjects due to the reduction of physical and psychological symptoms was attributed to yoga slow breathing, meditation in enhancing the function of the central nervous system in hormone rebalancing which has a strong impact in the inhibition of psychological symptoms in the participants and yoga posture in strengthening the muscles and promoting blood circulation to the body need for physical activity, thus reducing physical symptoms.

Additionally, in support to the above analysis, researchers at the joint study led by All India Institute of Medical Sciences conducted a study of 100 IBD patients [ulcerative colitis (UC) n = 60 and Crohn's disease (CD) n = 40] during the clinical remission phase of disease, randomly assigned to either the yoga group with an 8-week yoga intervention (physical postures, pranayama, and meditation), 1- hour/day in addition to standard medical therapy (UC, n = 30; CD, n = 20) or the control group (UC, n = 30; CD n = 20), researchers after taking into account co and confounders found the below interesting results
* Yoga group displayed a reduction of UC patients in reported arthralgia, compared to control

* Numbers of Yoga group experienced reduced intestinal colic pain were lower compared to higher in the control group.

3. Yoga participants also expressed an improvement of state and trait anxiety levels.

These results suggested that yoga practice with meditation and slow breathing also have a strong effect in influence the hormone production of the central nervous system. By calming the central nervous system in reducing overproduction of certain hormones that are responsible for muscle constriction, thus decreasing pain.

Taking all together, yoga may be considered an integrated form of exercise for improvement of psychological and physical activities and quality of life in ulcerative colitis patients without inducing any side effects.
