Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) is medical condition mostly caused by work related occupations and working environment, affecting patients’ muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments and nerves and developing over time. A community sample of 73 females and 32 males aged 85 and over underwent a standardised examination at home. Musculoskeletal pain was reported by 57% of those interviewed(1).


                    Cervical Stenosis


Cervical Stenosis is defined as a degeneration of the structures of the spine as a result of aging causes of a slowly progressive condition of the cervical spinal cord. Spinal stenosis cause pressure on the spinal cord, which may lead to the symptoms of myelopathy. Cervical spinal stenosis with myelopathy is a common disease in elderly patients of male gender(2).

2. Valerian is a perennial flowering plant, in the genus Valeriana, belonging to the family Valerianaceae, native to Europe and parts of Asia. The herb has been used as a sedative and relaxing agent and to treat the liver, the urinary tract, the digestive tract problem, nerve conditions, etc.
In the evaluation of the effect of V. wallichii chemotype (patchouli alcohol) extract (DCME) and essential oil (VPAEO) on experimental models of nociception and to elucidate its possible mechanism of action, found that DCME and VPAEO (40 and 80 mg/kg, p.o.) significantly inhibited the number of writhings as compared to vehicle treated group. None of the doses of DCME and VPAEO exhibited any effect in tail flick model suggesting only peripheral analgesic activity. When studied for mechanism of action in acetic acid induced writhing, subeffective dose of essential oil significantly potentiated the effect of aspirin while no potentiation was seen in case of extract. These data suggest that essential oil VPAEO exerted peripheral analgesic via inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis, accoridng to “Elucidation of possible mechanism of analgesic action of Valeriana wallichii DC chemotype (patchouli alcohol) in experimental animal models” by Sah SP, Mathela CS, Chopra K.(b)

3. Harpagophytum procumbens (Devil’s claw), Salix alba (White willow bark), and Capsicum frutescens (Cayenne)
In a systematic review of randomized controlled trials to determine the effectiveness of herbal medicine compared with placebo, no intervention, or “standard/accepted/conventional treatments” for nonspecific low back pain, found that Harpagophytum procumbens (Devil’s claw), Salix alba (White willow bark), and Capsicum frutescens (Cayenne) seem to reduce pain more than placebo. Additional trials testing these herbal medicines against standard treatments will clarify their equivalence in terms of efficacy(c).

The smoothie for people with Erectile Dysfunction

Yield: 2 serving (about 8 ounce each)
1 3/4 cup pomegranate fruit or 1 cup of pomegranate juice
1 cup Panax ginseng drink, (Make from 2 grams of dried root, soaped into a cup of hot water  for 5 minutes, and set aside for cooling to room temperature)

In animal study, chronic oral administration of pomegranate juice (PJ) showd to increase intracavernous blood flow, improve erectile response and smooth muscle relaxation in ED, throough its effects in anti oxidative stress and free radical scavenging capacity(14), according to VA Boston Healthcare System and Boston University School of Medicine(14) and the Boston University School of Medicine and Veterans Affairs Boston Healthcare System, Boston(15).

Futhermore in 53 male patient with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, crossover study, Dr. Forest CP and the research team at the Male Clinic, Beverly Hills said," in GAQ scores after beverage consumption, 25 reported improvement after drinking pomegranate juice. Further, 17 subjects showed preference of one beverage to the other" and "... the possibility that larger cohorts and longer treatment periods may achieve statistical significance"(13).

Taking all together, Smoothie of Pomegranate and Panax ginseng drink may be a potent drink for reduced risk and treatment of Erectile Dysfunction
People who are at increased risk of Erectile Dysfunction due to family history, gene mutation, obesesity.....should drink at least one cup daily and people with Erectile Dysfunction should drink the juices no more than 4 serving a day, depending to digestive toleration.

Low back pain is a Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs, affecting over 80% of the population in US alone some points in their life. Chronic LBP (pain has persisted for longer than 3 months(1) prevalence in older adults was significantly higher than the 21-to-44-year age group (12.3% vs. 6.5%, p < .001). Older adults were more disabled, had longer symptom duration, and were less depressed(2)..Many older adults remain quite functional despite CLBP, and because age-related comorbidities often exist independently of pain (e.g., medical illnesses, sleep disturbance, mobility difficulty), the unique impact of CLBP is unknown. We conducted this research to identify the multidimensional factors that distinguish independent community dwelling older adults with CLBP from those that are pain-free(3).

                              Causes of chronic back pain

1. Trochanteric bursitis
Trochanteric bursitisis a clinical condition which simulates major hip diseases and low back pain, it may also mimic nerve root pressure syndrome(10).

The finding of a natural source for treatment of infertility has been running into many obstacles, many ingredients showed initially with promising result in animal studies have not produced same potentials in either large sample size and mutli centers human trials.

Cinnamon, a kitchen spice in many cultures, may be best known for its effect in reduced levels of blood glucose in diabetics and lipid peroxidation through its antioxidant activity(4) . Its underline mechanisms in enhancing fertility in both sexes are unknown.

Infertility is defined as the inability of a couple to conceive after 12 months of unprotected sexual intercourse or the cannot carry the pregnancy full term. It affects over 5 million couples alone in the U. S. and many times more in the world. Because of an unawareness of treatments, only 10% seek help from professional specialists. Cinnamaldehyde, a major chemical compound of cinnamon, also showed to enhance fertility through selectively induced progesterone production and inhibited production of testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone in human adrenal cells(3).

Its extract in PCOs study not only showed to reduce insulin resistance in vitro and in vivo by increasing phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase activity in the insulin signaling pathway, but also improved menstrual cyclicity through significant reductions in insulin resistance(8).

In infertile male rat study conducted by Fırat University, long-term cinnamonbark oil(CPO) improved the effect on testicular oxidant-antioxidant balance and sperm quality with significantly decreasing the abnormal sperm rate and apoptotic germ cell count(2).
The study in male rat reproductive system induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4 ), the cinnamon bark oil(CPO), also showed a significant improvements in absolute weights of testis and epididymis, all sperm quality parameters, LPO level, apoptotic index and testicular(6)

Taken altogether, Cinnamon may be effective in promoting fertility in both sexes through enhancing the menstrual cycle in women and improving sperm performance in men. Unfortunately, according to DR. Georgakopoulou EA(6), Oral intake of Cinnamon may cause Stomatitis, and burning sensation in mouth with large amount. The traditional Chinese medicine also insisted that Overdoses of cinnamon can be toxic and damaged to liver(5).

Ginseng is a slow-growing perennial plants with fleshy roots, the genus Panax, belonging to the family Araliaceae. Depending to the climate where it grows, ginseng can be classified mainly into Panax ginseng Asian ginseng (root), Red ginseng, wild ginseng, American ginseng (root).

According to Dr. Akram H and the research team at the Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences, also suggested that its counter part American ginseng can prevent the cytotoxic effects of CP on sperm quality factors(11).

Intake of milk and dairy products may also have a higher than normal influence with infertility in male subjects. The smoothie for people with inctreased risk of Diabetes and Diabetes

Yield: 2 serving (about 8 ounce each)
1 3/4 cup whole food papaya
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1 cup green tea drink (Make from 4 grams(2 tea bags) of green tea, a slice of ginger and a cup of hot water lipped for 5 minutes, and set aside for cooling to room temperature)
1. Place whole food papaya, cinnamon and green tea drink in a blender and puree about 1 minute
2. Blend on high speed about 1 minute or until the mixture is thick and the ice is well crushed.
3. Serve immediately

The finding of a natural source for reduced risk and treatment of diabetes has encountered many obstacles, many ingredients showed initially the promising result in animal studies have not produced same potentials in either large sample size and mutli centers human trials.

Diabetes is defined as a condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose. It is either caused by cells in pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases,diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system

Cinnamon, a kitchen spicy in many cultures, may have gained many believers, including medical professions because of its anti diabetic effect, through regulating the blood glucose levels in healthy and diabetic subjects. According to herbalists, intake of 1/4 tsp. in the morning and evening may reduce the blood sugar significantly with little or no adverse effects.

The herb has been use in herbal and traditional medicine as anti-fungal and bacteria level to improve reproductive organ, prevent flatulence and intestinal cramping, treat indigestion, diarrhea, bad breath, headache, migraine, etc.(1).

According to the 2011 statistic from National Diabetes InformationClearinghouse (NDIC), among U.S. residents ages 65 years and older, 10.9 million, or 26.9 percent, had diabetes in 2010, about 215,000 people younger than 20 years had diabetes—type 1 or type 2—in the United States in 2010 and approximately, 1.9 million people ages 20 years or older were newly diagnosed with diabetes in 2010 in the United States.

In a total of 66 patients with type 2 diabetes study conducted by Xuhui District Central Hospital, showed a significant reduction of blood triglyceride levels in the low-dose group, after 3 months of oral administration(2)

Some researchers suggested that cinnamon extract may improve fasting blood glucose levels and glucose tolerance without altering the insulin secretion, through lower triglyceride and increased liver glycogen content and improved insulin action in liver tissues(3).

Dr. Kim SH and Dr. Choung SY. told PubMed "The effect of cinnamon in significantly increases insulin sensitivity, reduces serum, and hepatic lipids, and improves hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia possibly by regulating the PPAR(in regulation of metabolism (carbohydrate, lipid, protein))-medicated glucose and lipid metabolism"(4)

In support of the above, chromium(Cr) and polyphenols found in cinnamon(Cinnamomon cassia) indicated a improvement of glucose, insulin, cholesterol and HbA1c(Glucose lab test) in patients with type 2 diabetesfollowing Cr supplementation, in a double-blind placebo-controlled study(7).

Unfortunately, according to the Western University of Health Sciences, consumption of cinnamon is associated with a statistically significant decrease in levels of fasting plasma glucose, but insisted that high degree of heterogeneity may limit the ability to apply these results to patient care, due to the unclear preferred dose and duration of therapy(5)

A randomized clinical trial in which 70 Patients with type II diabetesassigned randomly two groups (35 in cinnamon and 35 in placebo group for the testing of the effect of cinnamon on the glucose level in blood, indicated an insignificant effect of using cinnamon on glucose level of diabetic patients and the herb should not be recommended to patients with type II diabetes depending on further studies(6).

People with Type II Diabetes may also be thinking to add whole food papaya into their diet. the recent study suggested(7) ,
The finding not only showed the effectiveness of unripe pawpaw fruit (Carica papaya) in inhibition α-amylase, α-glucosidase, but also induced lipid peroxidation in a dose-dependent manner, in rat pancreas(7).
The key enzymes of α-amylase, α-glucosidase, involved in the digestion of carbohydrates, have been linked to onset of type 2 diabetes. Inhibition of these enzymes can significantly reduce the post-prandial increase of blood glucose and have been considered by therapists in use for management of blood glucose level in type 2 diabetic and borderline patients(8).

In a new study, conducted by the researchers at the Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute, fermented papaya preparation was tested whether it improves dermal wound healing outcomes in adult diabetic mice by preventing the risk of infections(11).
The result was astonishing, the fermentation not only up regulated the Sp1 DNA binding activity(modulating the cellular response to DNA damage) in Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) but also the protein and mRNA expression of Rac2(regulates a number of cellular functions)(11).

A randomized controlled clinical trial conducted at the Cardiac Centre, ANDI Centre of Excellence for Biomedical and Biomaterials Research and Department of Biosciences University of Mauritius, suggested that oral administration of 6g FPP®/day for a period of 14 weeks could improve the general health status of several organs targeted by oxidative stress duringdiabetes and suggested that the supplement may be used in the management the complications of diabetes such as cardiovascular disease, neurological disease and other conditions worsened by overt inflammation and oxidative stress(12).

Green tea has been a precious drink in traditional Chinese culture and used exceptional in socialization for more than 4000 thousand years. Due to its commercial values and health effects, green tea now has been cultivated all over the world in suitable climate.

Furthermore, intake of green tea of 150 ml green tea, three times a day for four weeks, has positive effect on insulin resistance and certain lipoproteins in type 2 DM, according to the Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Science(16).

People who are at increased risk of diabetes due to family history, gene mutation, obesity.....should drink at least one serving daily and people with diabetes should drink no more than 4 serving a day, depending to digestive toleration.
Change of life style and diet pattern are also recommended.

The dream of finding the natural ingredient for prevention and treatment of Insulin Resistance on prediabetes without adverse effects in replacement of conventional medication has not been abated. Some ingredients have to discard due to it can achieve the same potent results in human trials.

Insulin resistance (IR) is a medical condition of the body cells fail to respond to the normal actions of the hormone insulin against intake of glucose.

It is second only to banana as America's most favourite tropical fruit.

Ethanolic extracts of Ananas comosus L. leaves (AC) is found effectively in reduced insulin resistance in HepG2 cells, in high-fat diet-fed and low-dose streptozotozin-treated diabetic rats, according to the study by the Tsinghua University(5).
In diabetic-dyslipidemic rats, oral intake of the extract also significantly inhibited the increase in blood glucose in oral glucose tolerance test, through its anti-diabetic, anti-hyperlipidemic and anti-oxidative activities(6). 

Green tea has been a precious drink in traditional Chinese culture and used exceptional in socialization for more than 4000 thousand years used in traditional Chinese medicien for treatment of variety of diseases, including cancers and heart diseases.

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 56 obese subjects, daily supplementation with 379 mg of green tea extract (GTE) not only influences blood pressure, inflammation and oxidative stress, and lipid profile, but alos insulin resistance, in patients with obesity-related hypertension(7).

Dr. Hsu CH and the research team at the National Yang-Ming University, also support the use of decaffeinated green tea extract (GTE) for reduction of insulin resistance, according to the clinical result of conducted from December 2007(8).

Selenium-containing tea polysaccharides (Se-GTP), significantly improved insulin sensitivity, and reduced liver steatosis and oxidative stress damage at doses of at 400 and 800 mg in a high fructose-induced insulin resistance and hepatic oxidative injury mice study(9).

Taking all together, Smoothie of green bananas, pineapples and  green tea may be a potent drink for reduced risk and treatment of Insulin Resistance.
