Herbal Cascara Sagrada, the Best for the Prevention and Treatment of Mastitis and Lactation Mastitis, According to Studies

Herbal Cascara sagrada processed bioactive compounds emodin and aloin may have a strong inhibited effect against the onset of mastitis according to studies.

Mastitis is an inflammation of breast tissue, affecting mostly the mothers who are breastfeeding.
Most cases of mastitis are caused by a bacterial infection such as Staphylococcus aureus.

Most common risk factors of lactation mastitis are blocked duct(s) and restriction from a tight bra, attachment difficulties, and nipple pain during a feed were the significant predictors for mastitis in the first time breastfeeding mothers, according to the Journal of Human Lactation

Most common symptoms of mastitis are breast pain, swelling, warmth, and redness. Some patients may also experience symptoms of fever and chills.

Most cases of mastitis are treated with antibiotics, the medicine may be effective but it has found epidemiologically to induce some side effects.

If you are currently taking one of them, please make sure you know all the side effect for preventive measure.

According to the study of 946 breastfeeding women from Michigan and Nebraska for the first 3 months postpartum or until they stopped breastfeeding to describe mastitis incidence, mastitis treatment, and any associations between mastitis occurrence and hypothesized host characteristics and behaviors.researchers found that mastitis is a very common condition in lactation women.

Telephone interviewed by at 3, 6, 9, and 12 weeks postpartum or until they ceased breastfeeding, a total of 9.5% reported provider-diagnosed lactation mastitis at least once during the 12-week period, with 64% diagnosed via telephone.

Cascara sagrada is a species of buckthorn, genus Rhamnus, belonging to the family Rhamnaceae, native to western North America, it's bark has been used in traditional medicine for gastrointestinal support. and it is thought to have a laxative and natural cleansing, etc., effect.

Besides the main compound of anthraquinones, other compounds include anthraquinone glycosides, (emodin, frangulin, iso-emodin, aloe-emodin, and chrysophanol), rhein, aloin, malic acid, tannic acid, cascarosides A, B, C, and D, and hydroxy anthracene derivatives (HAD), etc.

Researchers on finding herbal medicine for the treatment of mastitis examined the Emodin, the major active compound of herbal Cascara Sagrada and Chinese herb Radix et Rhizoma Rhei effect on mastitis.

The mouse model of mastitis was induced by injection of LPS through the duct of the mammary gland. Pretreatment of emodin intraperitoneally with the dose of 1, 2, and 4 mg/kg respectively 1h before and 12h after induction of LPS showed a significant reduction of levels of proinflammatory cytokines, oxidative stress makers and neutrophils, a type of white blood cell.

Emodin influenced nuclear factor kappa-B signal transduction pathway, a protein associated with the controls of transcription of DNA, cytokine production and cell survival. by inhibiting activation of (nuclear transcription factor-kappaB (NF-κB) p65 involved) a protein complex involved the immune response and (degradation inhibitor of NF-κB α (IκBα), and degradation of the cellular response to inflammation.

Furthermore, the efficacy of emodin also attributed to the activation of the signaling pathways associated with the cellular responses to environmental stress and stimuli and the production of pro and anti-inflammatory cytokines.

Researcher wrote in the conclusion of the study, "Emodin could exert beneficial effects on experimental mastitis induced by LPS and may represent a novel treatment strategy for mastitis".

Moreover, in order to investigate the effects of herbal Cascara Sagrada and (Mastitis), researchers examined the herbal Cascara Sagrada and (Mastitis) therapeutic potential photogenically derived aloin, another major compound of the herb, mediated nanosilver particles (AAgNPs), prepared by reduction of silver nitrate with aloin, in Staphylococcus aureus-induced murine mastitis.

The study included a total of 40 female mice divided into five groups of eight animals each.
* Group I served as lactating control,

* Groups II-V inoculated with 20 μl of 24 h broth culture of S. aureus containing 4.0 × 105 cfu/quarter under ketamine anesthesia. After 6 h post inoculation, and

* Groups III and IV received 20 μl of aloin nanosilver (AAgNPs) through intramammary and intraperitoneal routes, respectively.

* Group V received antibiotic cefepime at 1 mg/kg body weight through the intraperitoneal route.

After 18 hours of post-treatment, injection of the compound showed a minimum inhibitory concentration of 21.8 ng/ml against S. aureus.

Nanosilver particles (AAgNPs) showed a significant reduction of 98% of the poly-morpho nuclear cell, a category of white blood cells in the mediation of the phase of inflammation, compared to only 50% in an antibiotic.

Taken altogether, herbal Cascara Sagrada processed abundantly bioactive compounds emodin and aloin may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of mastitis.

Ginger, the Anti Cervical Cancer Functional Remedy, According to Studies

Scientists may have found a natural and pungent spice for the prevention and treatment of cervical cancer, according to the studies.

Cervical cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably in the cervix tissue.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2018, approximately, 13,240 new cases of invasive cervical cancer were diagnosed. The disease causes the death of 4,170 women in the same year.

The 5-year survival rate for women with invasive cervical cancer is 92% if the cancer is detected at an early stage. About 46% of women with cervical cancer are diagnosed at an early stage.
Most cases of cervical cancer are detected during the annual physical exam during the Pap test.

The exact cause of cervical cancer is due to the alternation of the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the cervical tissue. Researchers do not know, Why? some women are more susceptible to the onset of cervical cancer while others do not, even they have the same health conditions and family history in the same family.

However, researchers do know that certain risk factors such as human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, the increase in age, herpes infection, smoking are associated with the onset of cervical cancer.

Ethnicity also plays a critical role in cervical cancer, the American Cancer society wrote, "In the United States, Hispanic women are most likely to get cervical cancer, followed by African-Americans, Asians, and Pacific Islanders, and whites. American Indians and Alaskan natives have the lowest risk of cervical cancer in this country".

Furthermore, some researchers suggested that oral sex which refers to sexual activities involving the stimulation of the genitalia by the use of the mouth, tongue, teeth, or throat also have a strong linkage to cervical cancer. Dr. Rajiv Saini examined the link between oral sex and cervical cancer wrote, "Current research suggests that oral sex may transmit human papillomavirus (HPV), the virus implicated in the majority of cervical cancers. HPV is ubiquitous, with 120 strains isolated from human beings, about 40 of which are in the mouth and genital tracts".

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of cervical cancer examined the antitumor activities of 6-Gingerol, a potent nutraceutical isolated from the ginger on human cervical cancer (HeLa) cell lines with or without wortmannin, rapamycin, and cisplatin.

Injection of 6-Gingerol showed dose-dependent cytotoxicity on human cervical cancer (HeLa) cell lines.

Combinations of 6-gingerol with wortmannin and cisplatin showed additive effects, while with rapamycin, it showed 50% cytotoxicity that was equivalent to IC50 of 6-gingerol alone.

Treatment with 6-gingerol resulted in G2-phase arrest in HeLa cells. 6-Gingerol, wortmannin, and rapamycin treatment showed almost two-fold higher expression of a pro-apoptotic protein in the tested cell line.

The finding strongly suggested that 6-gingerol may be a safe and potent chemotherapeutic/chemopreventive compound acting through cell cycle arrest and induction of apoptosis in cervical tumor cells.

In order to reveal more information of ginger anti-cervical cancer properties, researchers examined the polyphenolic alkanone, 6-Gingerol (6G), presented in the pungent extracts of ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) anti-tumorigenic and pro-apoptotic activities against cervical cancer.

In vivo. 6G potently inhibited proliferation of the HPV positive cervical cancer cells.

Additionally, 6G was found to inhibit the chymotrypsin activity associated with the induced degradation of tumor suppressor proteins, reactivate the gene involved regulating cell cycle and tumor suppression and suppress the protein involved a cellular response to cytokines, chemokines, stimuli.

More interestingly, injection 6G also expressed an inhibitory activity against cervical cancer cell lines through inducing DNA damage of the tumor cell and G2/M cell cycle arrest and potentiate the cytotoxicity of cisplatin.

6G treatment induced a significant reduction of tumor volume, tumor weight, inhibition of proteasome that breaks down protein and tumor suppressive gene accumulation in HeLa xenograft tumor cells in vivo.

Dr. Rastogi N and colleagues said, " our data underscore the therapeutic and chemosensitizing effects of 6G in the management and treatment of cervical cancer".

Taken altogether, ginger with abundantly bioactive compound 6-gingerol may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of cervical cancer, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Honey, the Best Remedy for the treatment of Asthma with No Side Effects

Asthma is a chronic inflammation of the airway of the lung with recurring symptoms. Asthma, attacks triggered by the stimuli can induce airway swollen and inflamed, leading to muscle constriction.

During the asthma attacks, patients may experience symptoms of difficult breathing, and severe wheezing in the breath and coughs that won't stop.

According to the statistic provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1 in 13 people in the US has asthma.

In other words, more than 26 million Americans have asthma, with half of the patients are children.

If you experience symptoms of a cough which often worse at night or early in the morning, wheezing in your breath, accompanied with chest tightness and shortness of breath, you may be at the early stage of asthma. Please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Genetic and environmental factors are the most common risk factors associated with the onset of asthma. Some researchers suggested that the widespread obesity over the past few decades may also have a strong implication on the onset of the disease.

Dr. David A. Beuthe r, the lead scientist in the concern of the association of asthma and obesity said, "Cross-sectional and prospective cohort studies of humans have shown a modest overall increase in asthma incidence and prevalence in the obese, although body mass index does not appear to be a significant modifier of asthma severity".

And, "Studying the obesity-asthma relationship in large cohorts, in which self-reports are frequently used to ascertain the diagnosis of asthma, has been complicated by alterations in pulmonary physiology caused by obesity, which may lead to dyspnea or other respiratory symptoms but do not fulfill accepted physiologic criteria for asthma".

These results strongly suggested that if you are obese, your risk of asthma is increased substantially.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

Scientists on finding a natural remedy for the treatment of asthma investigated the effect of aerosolized honey on airway tissues in a rabbit model of ovalbumin (OVA)-induced asthma.

The study included 40 New Zealand white rabbits sensitized twice with a mixture of OVA and aluminum hydroxide on days 1 and 14.

Honey treatments were given from day 23 to day 25 at two different doses (25% (v/v) and 50% (v/v) of honey diluted in sterile phosphate buffer saline.

During the study, aerosolized honey treatment group restored the epithelium, mucosa, and submucosal regions of the airway infected by the application of OVA.

Futhermore, aerosolized honey treatment also found to reduce the number of airway inflammatory cells presented in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and inhibit the goblet cell hyperplasia, an indication of airway remodeling in asthma.

The findings strongly suggested that aerosolized honey has a significant effect on the treatment and management of asthma in animal models.

Additional differentiation of the modulatory effect of honey, royal jelly, and propolis extract on peripheral blood leukocytes and lung inflammation in a mouse conalbumin-induced asthma model in mice model divided into* The mice in group I that were not sensitized or treated; they were kept as controls.

* The mice in group II that were sensitized and challenged with conalbumin. Twenty-four hours after the first challenge with antigen.

* The mice in group III received 0.5 mg/kg of dexamethasone intraperitoneally per day for 18 consecutive days and kept as positive controls.

* The mice in groups IV, V, and VI received 650, 1000, and 30 mg/kg of honey, royal jelly, and propolis (aqueous and ethanolic extract), respectively, once per day for 18 consecutive days.

At the end of the experiment, by comparing the blood sample before and after treatment, researchers showed
* The groups treated with propolis extract exhibited considerable ameliorative effects against asthma, probably due to the expression of flavonoids and phenolics that exert antioxidative effects.

* Honey- or royal jelly-treated groups exhibited an increased incidence of asthma cascade events due to increased inflammatory cells, probably due to the antagonist to bronchial asthma cases.

The results clearly indicated that not all honey is the same. Some can be used for asthma while others can not, probably due to types of chemicals compounds found in the pollen

Taken altogether, honey and other bee products may be considered functional remedies for the prevention and treatment of asthma, pending to the confirmation of the types of honey in a large and multicenter human study.

Herbal Ginger, the Natural Anti Prostate Cancer Remedy with No Side Effects, Scientists Reveal

Scientists may have found a pungent spice which processes a potential for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, some studies suggested.

Prostate cancer is a chronic condition caused by the cell growth irregularly and disorderly in the prostate tissue due to the alternation of DNA.

Prostate cancer is one a slow growth of cancer and can be detected during annual rectum exam.

At the early stage, prostate cancer cell which has grown on the surface of the inner lining of the prostate does not cause any symptoms due to the very small size of the tumor.

However, at the later stage, the large tumor size may suppress the nearby blood vessels and nerve cells, leading to internal bleeding and severe pain. Also, cancer cells may also travel a distance away from the stomach to infect other healthy tissue and organs, leading to a secondary metastasis.

Common sites metastases of prostate cancer are bone, lymph nodes, lung, liver.

Researchers do not know the exact causes of prostate cancer. However, they do know the increase in age, family and personal history, ethnicity, genetic preposition, a poor diet, being overweight or obesity are some of the prevalent risk factors of prostate cancer.

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, in 2017, 21,300 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer, represented 21% of all new cancer cases and 4,100 men died from prostate cancer, and 10% of all cancer deaths.

The 5 years survival rate of localized prostate cancer is 100% and 98% of that of survivors are alive after 10 years compared to the advanced stage of only 31%.

Some researchers concerned the widespread prostate cancer in North America, northwestern Europe, Australia, and on Caribbean islands compared to Asia, Africa, Central America, and South America, said, "One of the most striking characteristics of prostate cancer is the degree of geographic variation in its patterns of occurrence and progression; this variation is apparent at local, national, and international levels".

And "the known factors influencing the biology and epidemiology of prostate cancer and some of the ways in which findings to date have benefited from geography".

The results strongly indicated there must be something happened in the Western world that does not found in the East and Africa, Central America, and South America.

Some researchers suggested it may be the Western diet.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

In the concern of prostate cancer risk in men in the Western world and its related mortality and morbidity, researchers in the cancer team at the The University of Texas at Austin examined the anti-prostate cancer effect of 6-Shogaol (6-SHO), a potent bioactive compound in ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe).

Injection of the bioactive compound effectively reduced survival and induced apoptosis of cultured human (LNCaP, DU145, and PC3) and mouse (HMVP2) prostate cancer cells.

6-SHO reduced the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the activation of the proteins involved cell proliferation and the capacity for metastasis.

Furthermore, 6-SHO also inhibited the expression of cytokines in the stimulation of proteins and genes associated with the anti-apoptotic activity and tumor cells survival.

6-SHO was more effective than two other compounds found in ginger, 6-gingerol, and 6-paradol at reducing survival of prostate cancer cells.

Moreover, 6-SHO also showed significant tumor growth inhibitory activity in an allograft model in HMVP2 cells.

In other words, 6-SHO inhibited prostate cancer through several mechanisms, including chemokine, cytokine, cell cycle, apoptosis, and genes.

Dr. Saha A and colleagues wrote in the final report, "6-SHO may have potential as a chemopreventive and/or therapeutic agent for prostate cancer".

Additionally, in order to reveal more information about ginger as a promising chemopreventive agent, researchers examined the ginger extract (GE) growth-inhibitory and death-inductive effects in a spectrum of prostate cancer cells.

Injection of the extract showed a significant effect on perturbed cell-cycle progression, impaired reproductive capacity, modulated cell-cycle, and apoptosis in human prostate cancer cells.

Daily oral feeding of 100 mg/kg body weight of GE inhibited growth and progression of PC-3 xenografts by approximately 56 % in nude mice, observed by the tumor tissue from GE-treated mice compared to controls.

Most importantly, GE is safe as toxicity is not detected in normal, rapidly dividing tissues such as gut and bone marrow.

Taken altogether, ginger processed 6-Shogaol (6-SHO) may be considered a function remedy for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for treatment of prostate cancer with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Ginger, the Anti Gastric Cancer Natural Remedy with No Side Effects, Scientists Reveal

Scientists may have found a pungent spice which processes the potential for the prevention and treatment of gastric cancer, some studies suggested.

Gastric cancer is also known as stomach cancer, a medical and chronic condition caused by the cell growth irregularly and disorderly in the stomach tissues due to the alternation of DNA.

Researchers do not know the exact causes of gastric cancer, either they know people with the same health conditions, in the same family, some are susceptible to the DNA alternation, while others do not.

At the early stage, gastric cancer cell which has grown on the surface of the inner lining of the stomach does not cause any symptoms due to the very small size of the tumor.

However, at the later stage, the large tumor size may suppress the nearby blood vessels and nerve cells, leading to internal bleeding and severe pain. Also, cancer cells may also travel a distance away from the stomach to infect other healthy tissue and organs, leading to a secondary metastasis.

Common sites metastases of liver cancer are liver (48%), peritoneum (32%), lung (15%), and bone (12%).

According to the American Cancer Society, in 2018, approximately 26,240 new cases of gastric cancer will be diagnosed (16,520 in men and 9,720 in women), and gastric cancer causes the death of 10,800 people including 6,510 men and 4,290 women.

The 5 years survival rate of localized gastric cancer is 67%, compared to the advanced stage of only 31%.

Although there are many risk factors involved the onset of gastric cancer, epidemiologically, some researchers suggested the change of lifestyle associated with the promotion of the Western diet is the major prevalent risk factor in the Western world.

Dr, P. Bertuccio, the lead scientist in the compared the gastric cancer risk of the Western and ‘Prudent/healthy’ diet wrote, "A favorable role on GC emerged for the ‘Prudent/healthy’, with an odds ratio (OR) of 0.75 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.63–0.90], for the highest versus the lowest category. Similar results emerged for separate anatomical subtypes. An unfavorable role on GC emerged for the ‘Western/unhealthy’ dietary pattern, with an OR of 1.51 (95% CI: 1.21–1.89)".

And, "There is a ∼2-fold difference in GC risk between a ‘Prudent/healthy’ diet-rich in fruits and vegetables, and a ‘Western/unhealthy’ diet-rich in starchy foods, meat, and fats".

The results strongly suggested the protective role of high fruits and vegetable diet against the onset of gastric cancer.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of gastric cancer examined the role of ginger in combatting GI cancer, with little or no side effects.

Ginger and its active components including 6-gingerol and 6-shogaol exerted strong anticancer activities against GI cancer.

The anticancer activity of ginger and its isolated compounds attributed to the ability to modulation the proteins, cytokines, matrix, and enzymes associated with the pro-apoptosis, cancer cell cycle arrest anti-proliferation, and cell death programming.

In vitro, ginger extract and its active components also demonstrated the chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic potency against gastric cancer cell line.

In order to reveal more details of ginger and its bioactive against the gastric cancer cells, researchers assess the [6]-Gingerol anti-gastric tumor activity.

According to the A CCK-8 assay, [6]-gingerol inhibited the cell viability of HGC-27 cells in a dose-dependent manner.

The Colony formation assay indicated that pretreatment of [6]-gingerol prior to Ionizing radiation (IR) decreased the survival and proliferation of HGC-27 cells.

The combination of [6]-gingerol with IR enhanced IR-induced cell cycle arrest at the G2/M phase by 53.5% compared to 41.3% of IR alone.

Pretreatment of [6]-gingerol increased IR-induced apoptosis compared with IR alone.

The efficacy of [6]-gingrol in inhibiting gastric cancer cells was attributed to the interference of proteins associated with cancer cell survivals and proliferation and exhibiting the genes that suppress tumor growth, promote cancer cell degradation and program cancer cell death, observed by the Western blotting.

Dr. the lead scientist, after taking into account co and confounders, said, ":[6]-gingerol enhanced radiosensitivity of GC cells, and that the mechanisms involved at least G2/M phase arrest and apoptosis induction".

Taken altogether, ginger processed [6] gingerol may be considered a function remedy for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for treatment of gastric cancer with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of a large size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Alfalfa, A Potent and Natural Dietary Antioxidants

Herbal alfalfa may have a profound and positive effect in enhancing the expression of antioxidant in the body, some scientists suggested.

Antioxidants are stable molecules which inhibit oxidation induced by free radicals.

A free radical is a highly reactive atom with a single electron in the outer ring.

Free radicals produced in our body is a natural process derived either from essential metabolism through the processes of food intake or from external sources through directly contacting the skin or the air we breathe including exposure to X-rays, ozone, cigarette smoking, air pollutants, and industrial chemicals.

Some foods are antioxidants producers such as fruits and vegetable and whole grain, while others such as processed meats, alcohol are radicals producers. Particularly, fats and oils can easily be oxidized if they are cooked in high heat.

In order to counter the overexpression of free radicals which add to the body's burden, our body produces enzymes antioxidants and metal carrier proteins to neutralize them before they can cause damage.

Depending on the degrees of free radical invasion, antioxidant enzymes can be categorized into first, second, third and even fourth line of defense.

Dr. O.M, in the examine the antioxidant defense wrote, "The role and effectiveness of the first line defense antioxidants which basically include superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) is important and indispensable in the entire defense strategy of antioxidants, especially in reference to superoxide anion radical (*O2) which is perpetually generated in normal body metabolism, particularly through the mitochondrial energy production pathway (MEPP)".

The statement clearly suggested that in healthy individual antioxidant enzymes synthesized form our body is good enough to protect the body from bombardments of free radicals.

However, for people with a weakened immune system, chronic illness, dietary sources of antioxidants may be needed.

Oxidative stress is a result of the imbalance of free radicals and antioxidants in the body. The syndrome is either caused by overexpression of free radicals or depressed levels of antioxidant or both.

Oxidative stress has been found to induce widespread damage due to a set of a chain reaction auto-catalytically by free radicals that attacks the lipid bilayers of the cell walls, induces lipid, protein damage and alternation of cell DNA, leading to the onset of chronic diseases, including cancers.

Alfalfa is a flowering plant in the genus Medicago, belongings to the family Fabaceae.

The herb has been cultivated all over the world as hay for cattle feeding. The leaves, sprouts, and seeds to make medicine has been used in traditional medicine over thousands of year for the treatment of high cholesterol, asthma, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, enhance digestive system, bleeding disorder, kidney, and urinary tract infection, etc.

North America aboriginal has used Alfalfa seed as food, such as making bread and mush.

In the reaffirming the herbal alfalfa antioxidant activity especially scavenging activity for hydroxyl radical and DPPH radical, researchers launched a study to determine whether a lyophilized aqueous extract of alfalfa or Medicago sativa L. could exert antioxidant activity against carbon tetrachloride-induced oxidative stress and liver injury in rats.

Before injecting the lyophilized aqueous extract of alfalfa, rats treated by CCl (4) showed a significant increase of serum of oxidative stress markers observed by the levels of transaminase, ALP, bilirubin, lipid profile. and liver MDA accompanied by the decline of antioxidant status in liver non-protein sulfhydryl (NP-SH); and total protein (TP) contents.

Pretreatment with alfalfa and silymarin for three weeks prior to the administration of CCl (4) significantly prevented the increase of oxidative markers by reducing the oxidative stress indicated by elevated NP-SH and TP concentration of the antioxidant liver enzyme.

Futhermore, the incidence of liver lesion induced by the injection of CCL(4) also reduced by the pretreatment of alfalfa extract.

Application of alfalfa extracts also exerted a potent scavenging activity against hydroxyl radical and DPPH radical.

These results indicated that alfalfa may be considered a novel natural antioxidant. Dr.Al-Dosari MS wrote in the final report, " alfalfa extract possesses hepatoprotective and antioxidative stress properties possibly through its antioxidant phytochemical constituents and substantiates its use in various liver disorders as a hepatoprotector".

Additionally, researchers at the University of Life Sciences in Lublin, in the testing antioxidant effect of a dietary protein-xanthophylls (PX) concentrate of alfalfa on raw meat launched an evaluation by adding the concentration in turkey diet.

The study included 120 turkeys assigned randomly assigned to 3 groups (group I-control group; group II--with 1.5% supplementation of the protein-xanthophylls (PX) concentrate; group III--with 3% supplementation of the protein-xanthophylls (PX) concentrate).

The addition of protein-xanthophylls (PX) concentration of alfalfa to a turkey diet protects the deterioration of breast and thigh meat quality.

Also, by examining the changes in color, oxymyoglobin content, TBARS, and oxidation-reduction potential values, researchers said " the inclusion of the concentration to turkey diets acts as an antioxidant in the raw meat.

Taken altogether, alfalfa may be considered a natural antioxidant which improves the antioxidant profile in the body against the overexpression of free radicals in the initiation of oxidative stress.

Honey Improves the sleep Quality Naturally with No Side Effects, Scientists Say

Sleep disorders are conditions can be acute or chronic. Most of us experience sleep disturbance sometimes due to some specific and unspecific events. However, chronic sleep disorders are the changes in the way that you sleep.

Most people with chronic sleep disorder experience symptoms of excessive daytime sleepiness, irregular breathing or increased movement during sleep, and difficulty falling asleep.

Sleep quality can be measured by examing the.way that you sleep, including the time period that you need to fall to sleep and how many times you have awakened and drifted back to sleep during night sleep.

According to the statistic provided by the National Sleep Foundation’s inaugural Sleep Health Index, 45 % of Americans have poor or insufficient sleep. that affects their daily activities at least once in the past seven days.

The National Sleep Foundation continued, "...despite sleeping within the recommended number of hours a night, 35 percent of Americans report their sleep quality as “poor” or “only fair.” Twenty percent of Americans reported that they did not wake up feeling refreshed on any of the past seven days".

What causes poor quality of sleep in American? Some researchers suggested these may be results from occupation and occupation stress.

Dr, Eui-Joong Kim, the lead scientists, in examing the stressors' effect on sleep quality said, "It is possible that different types of stressors may bring with them different impacts on sleep" and " (a) some aspect of daily stress (such as job stress) and life events (such as divorce, bereavement), (b) experimentally imposed stressors (laboratory-based studies), and (c) traumatic stressors (such as disasters or PTSD)".

Additionally, " The first and last categories typically involve a longer duration of the stress exposure with varying levels of intensity; the experimental stressors, on the other hand, typically involve a short-term exposure to mild stress".

These results partly explained why over 20% of American suffer from poor quality of sleep.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

With an aim to find a natural compound for the improvement of sleep quality, researchers compared the effects of a single nocturnal dose of 3 honey products (eucalyptus honey, citrus honey, or Labiatae honey) to placebo (silan date extract) in children with upper respiratory tract infections (URIs).

The study included 300 children aged 1 to 5 years with URIs, nocturnal cough, and illness duration of ≤ 7 days from 6 general pediatric community clinics.

Eligible children received a single dose of 10 g of eucalyptus honey, citrus honey, Labiatae honey, or placebo administered 30 minutes before bedtime. There was a significant improvement in sleep quality from the night before treatment to the night of treatment in all 3 honey products and the placebo group.

However, the improvement was greater in the honey groups.

Honey products were rated higher than the silan date extract for symptomatic relief of their children's nocturnal cough and sleep difficulty due to URI, According to the survey returned from parents.

Dr. Cohen HA the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounders, said, "Honey may be a preferable treatment for a cough and sleep difficulty associated with childhood URI".

Furthermore, in order to reveal more information of honey effects in cough and sleep difficulty, researchers compared the effects of a single nocturnal dose of buckwheat honey or honey-flavored dextromethorphan (DM) with no treatment on nocturnal cough and sleep difficulty associated with childhood upper respiratory tract infections.

The study included 105 children aged 2 to 18 years with upper respiratory tract infections, nocturnal symptoms, and illness duration of 7 days or less were given a single dose of buckwheat honey, honey-flavored DM, or no treatment administered 30 minutes prior to bedtime.

Honey treatment group demonstrated significant differences in symptom improvement between treatment groups.

In paired comparisons, honey was significantly superior to no treatment for cough frequency and the combined score.

And, according to the survey returned by the parents, honey is most favorable for symptomatic relief of their child's nocturnal cough and sleep difficulty in children with upper respiratory tract infection.

Taken altogether, honey may be considered a functional remedy for the improvement of sleep quality, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.
