Cinnamon - The Best Whole food Medicine for Reduced Risk of CVD

Recent study suggested that cinnamon expressed reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases through its antioxidant, chemopreventive, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties.

Heart disease kills more than 2,000 Americans every day. Approximately 60 million Americans have heart disease.

Anything that serves to damage the inner lining of blood vessels and impedes the transportation of oxygen and nutrition to the heart can be defined as a risk of heart disease. Here are some early indication of heart disease symptoms:

Cinnamon is a spice derived from the inner bark of tree, native to South East Asia, of over 300 species of the genus Cinnamomum, belonging to the familyLauraceae, use in herbal and traditional medicine as anti-fungal and bacteria level to improve reproductive organ, prevent flatulence and intestinal cramping, treat indigestion, diarrhea, bad breath, headache, migraine, etc.

The joint study lead by the North Khorasan University of Medical Sciences, also suggested the use of cinnamon for the prevention and treatment of CVD, probably due to its activities in inhibition of metabolic syndrome (MetS), the leading cause of heart diseases.

In support of the above suggestion, some recent studies reaffirm the importance of cinnamon as a spice and maybe a natural remedy to treat cardiovascular diseases.

Furthermore, the intake of cinnamon powder also exerted a beneficial effect on glycaemic control in animals and human models, affecting the progression of metabolic alterations in the early stage of cardiovascular events.

Dr. Deng said, "The hypoglycemic effects of cinnamon and .... were demonstrated in most of the trials with some exceptions" and " Future studies with more defined participants, standardized preparation and dose, and improved trial design and size are warranted".

Taken together, cinnamon may be beneficiary for the prevention, management, and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, but the quantity used of cinnamon should only be prescribed by an herbalist in the prevention of toxicity.

Herbal Coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara) Inhibits Myelotoxicity

Myelotoxicity is a medical condition that causes the decrease of the production of cells responsible for immunity (leukocytes), carrying oxygen (erythrocytes), and/or for normal blood clotting (thrombocytes) due to bone marrow suppression.

Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is a peroxidase enzyme found most abundantly in white blood cells neutrophil granulocytes.

Myeloperoxidase (MPO) processes a critical role that protects our body against the invasion of microorganisms.

In cellular levels, myeloperoxidase (MPO) plays a critical role as a local mediator of tissue damage by stimulating the production of proinflammatory cytokines to protect the cell against foreign pathogens in the induction of acute phase of infection.

In other words, MPO deficiency induces the exaggerates of the inflammatory response that affects neutrophil functions including cytokine production in the acute phase of infection that can lead to chronic low-grade inflammatory disease.

MPO deficiency has been found in patients with diabetes mellitus, pregnancy, iron deficiency, renal transplantation, thrombotic diseases, lead poisoning, obstructive jaundice, disseminated cancers, hematologic disorders, and neoplasms.

However, genetic preposition may be the primary condition that causes the onset of PMO deficiency.

Dr. Roma Pahwa wrote, "Primary MPO deficiency is inherited as an autosomal recessive disorder and is generally present with varying degrees of severity and clinical features. A number of point germline mutations resulting in MPO deficiency have been detected in the primary form".

And, " Some of these mutations are associated with the defective posttranslational processing of the MPO precursor protein and others with pre-translational defects caused by mutations in the regulatory portion of the MPO gene".

Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used over thousands of years to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches and obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of neutropenia, researchers examined the effects of Tussilago farfara L. polysaccharides on the immune response of the lung cancer animal model.
The study included selected C57Bl/6 mice with Lewis lung carcinoma treated by conventional cisplatin/paclitaxel polychemotherapy before administrating additional Tussilago farfara L. polysaccharides.

According to the tested analysis, Tussilago farfara L. polysaccharides not only reduced the side effects of cisplatin/paclitaxel polychemotherapy induced myelotoxicity associated with moderated neutropenia but also enhanced the efficacy of the chemo drugs activity.

Moreover, the stimulating effect of polysaccharides on the granulopoiesis lineage cells involved in myelopoiesis that differentiate into unipotent neutrophil progenitors in the lung tumor cells compared to those of CSF Neupogen.that increase production of white blood cells in the body.

In other words, polysaccharides exhibited immune-modulating activity against myelotoxicity induced by chemo drug side effects.

Taken altogether, coltsfoot may be considered a remedy for the improvement of myelopoiesis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Chaste tree berry, The Herbal Remedy Which Blocks the Onset of Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)

Chaste tree berry, the queen of all herbs may have potency in the prevention and treatment of the premenstrual syndrome.

Premenstrual syndrome is a faulty function of the ovaries related to the women's menstrual cycle, affecting women's physical and emotional state, and sometimes interfering with daily activities as a result of hormone fluctuation. The syndrome occurs one to two weeks before menstruation and then declines when the period starts.

The exact causes of premenstrual syndrome are unknown. researchers also do not know why? women with the same health condition, some are more prone to the onset of PMS than others.
However, researchers do know that chemical changes in the brain during the menstrual cycle and period, leading to fluctuations of serotonin, a brain chemical (neurotransmitter) may play a crucial role in mood states and the imbalance of the levels of the hormone estrogen and progesterone could trigger PMS symptoms.

Truly, some researchers also suggested that insufficient amounts of serotonin produced a few days before menstruation may contribute to premenstrual symptoms such as depression, food cravings, and sleep problems.

Moreover, in the investigation of genes inherited from the parents and the risk of premenstrual syndrome, some researchers suggested that family history, ethnicity, and certain mutated gene could cause some women to succumb to PMS whereas others are left relatively unscathed.

Conventional medicine used to relieve pain in PMS, such as Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and painkillers may be effective, but they induce certain side effects including stomach pain and heartburn, headaches and dizziness,.... and skin rash due to an allergic reaction.

In serious cases, the medicine cause stomach ulcers, liver and kidney condition,... and hypertension. If you are taking the medicine for a long-term, please make sure that you discuss the adverse effects with your doctor.

Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, considered as Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts, The herb also has been used in herbal medicine for thousands of year as an aphrodisiac agent.

In a prospective, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, multi-center clinical trial in compared VAC BNO 1095 extract and placebo for up to three cycles, conducted by the Peking Union Medical College Hospital, group treated with extract of vitex agnus castus showed a significant reduced symptoms of PMS with mean total PMSD score decreased from 29.23 at baseline (0 cycle) to 6.41 at the termination (3rd cycle) with no serious of side effects.

Furthermore, the extract of vitex agnus castus (VAC, BNO 1095) oral administrated in 67 patients enrolled and randomly assigned to receive one tablet of VAC or placebo once a day, exhibited the decreased premenstrual syndrome symptoms at the 3rd cycle, including symptoms of negative affect, water retention, food cravings, and pain, in the treatment group, compared to placebo group, especially in symptoms of water retention.

The moderate-to-severe premenstrual syndrome in Chinese women study also showed a significantly greater improvement of symptoms with intake of vitex agnus castus (VAC, BNO 1095)group than placebo, including the symptom of insomnia.

Additionally, according to Dr. Döll M, the extract of chaste tree berry decreased the levels of prolactin serum during the first 3 weeks of the cycle of the premenstrual period, inducing stress involved expression of symptoms of PMS.

Taking together, Chaste tree berry may be a safe herbal medicine for the prevention and treatment of PMS, by decreasing the levels of prolactin, and negative factors and enhancing the function of alleviating symptoms of the syndrome.

Catnip, the Natural Dopamine for Penile Erection and Male Sexual Desire

Many researchers have raised questions of their's quality and effectiveness, depending too much on geographic differences, time of grown and harvest, etc.. I do believe, these questions can only be answered by an experienced herbalists.

Dopamine, a neurotransmitter plays an important role in the brain of the human body, including sexual behavior. Besides in the regulation of cognitive, integrative and reward processes, the organic chemical of catecholamine and phenethylamine also can trigger penile erection and control of sexual function by acting on oxytocinergic neurons.

Dr. Baskerville TA said," dopamine demonstrates the potential existence of an interaction between central dopamine and hormone in controlling sexual reproduction during penile erection

In fact, the effect of a pro-erectile dose of apomorphine, a mixed dopamine receptor agonist, showed stimulation of dopamine receptors, induced the release of oxytocin in the brain to mediate and reinforcing effects of sexual activity in regulating the sexual behavior (e.g., penile erection) with those controlling sexual motivation and sexual arousal.

Catnip may be the next generation of herbal medicine used as dopamine to increase penile erection and improve male sexual behavior.

Catnip is also known as catswort, or catmint, a plant of Nepeta, belonging to the family of Lamiaceae, native to Europe and Asia, used in herbal medicine as insect repellent and to treat digestive disorders, children restlessness and nervousness, fevers, colds and flu, skin irritations stimulate sweating, promote menstruation, etc.

According to the Paulista University, male rats of the NC group increased penile erection. facilitate sexual behavior and a decreased in general activity involved dopaminergic systems.

Several studies suggested that dopamine is a neurotransmitter plays an important role in regulating and controlling penile erection and sexual behavior, but the use of herbal medicine should only be prescribed by herbalist to prevent depression.

Cinnamon, The Best Whole Herb medicine in stimulated Immunomodulatory effect against Inflammatory Diseases

Intake of cinnamon in patients is found to enhance the immunomodulatory effect. According to the study by the Kyung Hee University, water extract of cinnamon bark (CWE) involved proteins in intracellular signaling molecules in activated T cells without exhibiting allergic, stress and overreaction of antibody effects.

The immune system is the set of cells and their activity against antigens or infectious agents that comprises the body's defense system against diseases. The immune system does a great job of keeping people healthy and preventing infections.

Cinnamon is a spice derived from the inner bark of tree, native to South East Asia, of over 300 species of the genus Cinnamomum, belonging to the familyLauraceae, use in herbal and traditional medicine as anti-fungal and bacteria level, to improve reproductive organ, prevent flatulence and intestinal cramping, and to treat indigestion, diarrhea, bad breath, headache, migraine, etc.

The impact of CBEO on 17 protein biomarkers play critical roles in inflammation and tissue remodeling.
In a Human Skin Disease Model. researchers found that cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) bark essential oil (CBEO) significantly inhibited an immunomodulatory protein molecule in the expression of inflammation'

Dr. Pahan K, said, " Sodium benzoate (NaB), a metabolite of cinnamon, improve immunomodulatory activities in regulated many immune signaling pathways responsible for inflammation, glial cell activation, switching of T-helper cells, modulation of regulatory T cells, cell-to-cell contact, and migration.....".

Furthermore, the approved metabolite of cinnamon also found to modify T cells at multiple steps and inhibit the adoptive transfer of experimental allergic encephalomyelitis.

In patients with Orofacial granulomatosis (OFG), a chronic inflammatory disorder, cinnamon- and benzoate-free diet (CB-free diet) improves symptoms of swelling, particularly with regard to oral inflammation, probably through immunomodulatory effect.

Taking all together, there is no doubt that intake of whole herbal cinnamon protects patients against inflammatory disease through activation of immunomodulatory activities, such as arthritis, asthma, colitis,...etc.
