Andrographis paniculata showed to improve the gastric tone and prevent gastric dysfunction through the protection of its antioxidants, the renowned institute suggested.
Andrographis paniculata is also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka. It has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia,...
The gastroprotective effect is a condition involved that enhances the function of the digestive system against the harmful organisms in induced chronic indigestion.
In the study of gastric ulcer induced by ethanol, aspirin, pylorus ligation, and cold restraint stress models, rats treated with rats pretreated with HAEAP (100,200,500mg/kg b. wt for 30 days) of Andrographis paniculata expressed a significant ulcer reduction, in a dose-dependent manner, according to the Bharathi Women's College.
Dr. Panneerselvam S, the lead author said, "The ulcer preventing effect of HAEAP may partly be due to its regulating effect on H(+)K(+)ATPase activity and /or mucin preserving effects" and "The flavonoids present in the HAEAP might be responsible for the gastroprotective action probably by maintaining the antioxidants and thiol status in the gastrointestinal tract".
In support of the above differentiation, the review of a period of 1 year from 2014-2015, using semi-structured questionnaires from different traditional Bengali people having knowledge on medicinal plants, out of 49 plants under 46 genera belonging to 33 families, Andrographis paniculata is one of the most prominent plants used among the people of Southern Assam for treating digestive system disorders (DSD).
Furthermore, seed ethyl acetate, acetone and methanol extracts of Andrographis paniculata (Burm.f.) Wall. ex Nees has drawn a lot of scientists' attention due to the limit success of chemical anthelmintics, a group of antiparasitic drugs (levamisole, flubendazole, and thiabendazole) in reduced gastrointestinal diseases.
In animal controls, ED(50), an ethanol extract of A. paniculata at a dose of 2.90 mg/ml, and in larval development assay at ED(50) of dose 4.26 mg/ml, showed significant effects against sheep parasite, Haemonchus contortus.
Taking together, there is no doubt that Andrographis paniculata consisted of a strong gastroprotective effect against the activities of harmful organisms, including parasites and may be used as a functional food in improving digestive functions.

Aloe Vera, the Natural Whole Food Medicine to Restore Normal Levels of Cholesterol
Dietary Aloe vera improved plasma lipid profile, through enhancing antioxidant and hepatoprotective capacities, a study by a renowned institute suggested.
Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan. It has become very popular for commercial cultivation due to its health benefits. Aloe vera has been used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of diseases, including wound, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes, and elevated cholesterol, etc.
Cholesterol is needed for our body to build cell walls, make hormones and vitamin D, and create bile salts for digested fat. However too much can be dangerous because cholesterol cannot dissolve in your blood.
According to the joint study lead by the Nanjing Agricultural University, oral administration of less than or equal to 1.88, 1.86, and 2.79 %/kg in test animals showed to improve plasma lipid profile status, antioxidant, and hepatoprotective enzyme activities.
Dr. Gabriel NN, the lead author suggested, animal fed with Aloe Vera exhibited a significantly elevated high-density lipoprotein in 0.5 and 1 % Aloe/kg with no significant changes in low-density lipoprotein. After 8 weeks of treatment, the group fed dietary Aloe at 4 %/kg expressed a significantly reduced total cholesterol and triacylglycerol.
Also in animal study of 5 treatment groups of rats (n = 7) fed with experimental diets: a normal control diet, a hypercholesterolemic diet (HD), hypercholesterolemic diet (HD) + Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG), hypercholesterolemic diet (HD) + AV gel, and hypercholesterolemic diet (HD) + Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) + AV gel, group fed with combination of LGG and AV gel exerted a therapeutic potential to decrease cholesterol levels and the risk of cardiovascular diseases
Furthermore, the efficacy of aloe vera in inhibited of high blood cholesterol is the result of the complex functions in restore normal levels of high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein-and very low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, through blocking altered fatty acid composition in the liver and kidney.
The most effective dose of oral administration of Aloe vera gel extract is at a dose of 300 mg/kg body weight per day to STZ-induced diabetic rats.
Dietary Aloe Vera has shown to inhibit lipid peroxidation and restore normal ratio levels of blood cholesterol in some animal studies, human trials are necessary to validate this claim.

Herbal Ashwagandha Arrests Prostate Cancer In Vitro
Cancer is a group of chronic diseases caused by irregular cell growth in the specific tissue of an organ due to DNA alternation.
Most cases of cancer start in the cell of the surface of the inner lining tissue before penetrating into deeper layers to form a tumor.
However, as cancer continued proliferation, at certain stages it can damage other healthy tissues. Sometimes cancer cells can spread to other organs in the body via lymph or blood.
Prostate cancer is a medical condition caused by the alternation of the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the prostate tissue.
Most prostate cancers are slow-growing and enlarged prostate and prostate cancer may be detected during the physical (rectum) exams.
According to the statistic, approximately, 1 man in 9 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime and 6 cases in 10 are diagnosed in men aged 65 or older.
Prostate cancer shared common symptoms of an enlarged prostate, including frequent urination particularly at night, weak or interrupted urine flow and erectile dysfunction, blood in the urine and blood in the seminal fluid.
The causes of prostate cancer are unknown. The increases with age, especially after age 50. family history. ethnicity, hereditary breast, and ovarian cancer (HBOC) syndrome and genetic proposition are some prevalent factors found in patients with the condition.
Conventionally, treatments of prostate cancer are totally depending on the type, stage, and grade accompanied by the patient overall health, age and life expectancy.
Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.
The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.
Researchers on finding a potent and natural ingredient for the treatment of prostate cancer investigated the effects of Withania extracts on highly metastatic, androgen-independent prostate cancer cell line (PC3).
According to the results obtained from tested differentiation, the extracts demonstrated strong inhibitory activity in decreasing the cancer cell viability with a half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 10 μg/mL.
The sample of prostate tissue and in PC3 cells also exhibited the predominantly high expression levels of IL-8 associated with the production chemokine produced by macrophages and COX-2 involved in the contribution of immune evasion and resistance to cancer immunotherapy were also suppressed by the lowest dose of W. somnifera in 24 hours.
Furthermore, the extract induced cycle arrest of the cancer cell line at the cell cycle in G2/M phase, observed from the rapid accumulation of PC3 cells significantly.
Moreover, W. somnifera extracts suppressed the PC3 inherent metastatic activity.
Based on the results, researchers wrote, "W. somnifera may be a good therapeutic agent in addition to the existing drugs for PC".
Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of prostate cancer, pending to the confirmation of larger size and multicenter human study.

Bromelain Inhibits the Parameters Associated with The Onset of Alzheimer's disease
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease correlated with major reductions of neurons to the respective target areas, named after German physician Alois Alzheimer.
Alzheimer's destroys brain cells, causing cognitive modalities severe enough to affect language communication, memory, lifelong hobbies or social life. Alzheimer's gets worse over time, and it is fatal.
According to statistics, over 25 million people in the world today are affected by dementia and most are suffering from Alzheimer's disease. In Canada, approximately, over half a million Canadians living with dementia accompanied by the 25,000 new cases diagnosed every year.
Believe it or not, in 2016, dementia had cost Canada over $10 billion, including the health-care system and out-of-pocket caregiver costs.
Epidemiologically, cigarette smoking, midlife high blood pressure and obesity, diabetes, and cerebrovascular lesions and psychosocial factors (eg, high education, active social engagement, physical exercise, and mentally stimulating activity) are associated with prevalent risk of AD developing.
Some researchers in the evaluated the increased AD in the older adults in the Western world over the past few decades may be correlated to the promotion of the high-fat diet.
Dr. Peter Thériault, the lead researcher wrote, "WD promotes systemic inflammation by increasing the levels of blood-circulating monocytes and monocyte chemotactic protein-1 production, which is accompanied by an augmentation of oxidized-low density lipoprotein levels in blood circulation".
And, "At the blood-brain barrier (BBB), WD potentiates the age-induced increase of Aβ 1-40 accumulation and exacerbates the oxidative stress, specifically in cerebral microvasculature. These effects were accompanied by the dysfunction of pericytes, thus altering BBB functionality without compromising its integrity".
In other words, if you are high-diet follow, you are at high risk of AD developing.
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, researchers investigated the ability of bromelain, a plant cysteine protease derived from pineapple stems interaction with synthetic Aβ42 monomers and oligomers.
According to the tested assays, bromelain protected the neuron successfully by degrading Aβ42 monomers and low and high molecular weight oligomers.
Examined the effects of bromelain preparations of 3 and 6 mU added to the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), the levels of Aβ42 monomers and oligomers were significantly reduced, compared to that od the same standard Aβ42 preparations incubated in CSF without bromelain
Furthermore, the concentration of bromelain incubations with 0.1, 0.5, and 1 mU/ml were not toxic to the central nervous system.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "these results represent an important insight into the action of bromelain on Aβ42 oligomers, suggesting its potential use in the therapy of AD".
In order to know more information about bromelain anti-Alzheimer's disease activity, researchers examined a beta-degrading activity of diverse alpha 2-macroglobulin (alpha 2-M)-proteinase including trypsin, alpha-chymotrypsin, and bromelain (125)I-A beta 1--42.
The complex showed a strong degradation of (125)I-A beta 1--42.
In Ex vivo, oral administration of high doses of proteinases displayed an enhanced degradation of (125)I-A beta 1--42 in the blood of volunteers.
In other words, the complexes exhibited a significant A beta catabolism, thus reducing the risk of developing AD by preventing A beta accumulation in brain and vasculature.
Taken altogether, bromelain used alone or combined with other herbal medicines may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Artichoke, the Potential Anti Cancer Herbal Remedy, Studies Find
Cancer is a group of diseases caused by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably in the tissue of the affected organs.
Cancers are caused by the alternation of cell DNA. What influences the change of cells' DNA?
Epidemiological studies suggested that certain risk factors such as age, family and personal history, ethnicity, exposure to toxic chemicals, unhealthy lifestyle,... the list goes on and on, but no one can explain why people with the came healthy conditions in the same family, some are susceptible to cancer while others do not.
Furthermore, most people with some of the risk factors have never developed cancer.
Most general symptoms shared by all cancers are unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, fatigue and tiredness and gastrointestinal discomforts.
Some researchers suggested that a weakened immune system due to reduced expression of proteins associated with the tumor suppression and cell death programming such as p53 and overexpression of protein involved cell cycle division such as cyclin.
Dr. Alexandre Corthay in the examination of the risk of cancer in patients with weakened immune system explained "Here, I present eight types of evidence in support of the cancer immunosurveillance hypothesis.
* First, primary immunodeficiency in mice and humans is associated with increased cancer risk.
*Second, organ transplant recipients, who are treated with immunosuppressive drugs, are more prone to cancer development.
*Third, acquired immunodeficiency due to infection by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) leads to an elevated risk of cancer.
*Fourth, the quantity and quality of the immune cell infiltrate found in human primary tumors represent an independent prognostic factor for patient survival.
*Fifth, cancer cells harbor mutations in protein-coding genes that are specifically recognized by the adaptive immune system.
*Sixth, cancer cells selectively accumulate mutations to evade immune destruction (“immunoediting”).
*Seventh, lymphocytes bearing the NKG2D receptor are able to recognize and eliminate stressed premalignant cells.
*Eighth, a promising strategy to treat cancer consists in potentiating the naturally occurring immune response of the patient, through blockade of the immune checkpoint molecules CTLA-4, PD-1, or PD-L1".
The results clearly suggested that if you have a strong immune system, your risk of cancer is decreased substantially,
Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.
The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.
Researchers on finding potential and natural ingredients as a human antibody against cancer, researchers examined the p19 silencing suppressor gene from artichoke in the tumor-associated antigen tenascin-C (TNC).
P19 silencing suppressor gene from artichoke inhibited the expression of the virus by raising the antibody expression levels by an order of magnitude (yields of purified H10, 50-100 mg/kg fresh weight).
Moreover, approximately 75% of purified protein consisted of full-sized antibody functionally binding to Tenascin-C against the specific accumulation around tumor blood vessels, according to the immunohistochemical analysis of tumor tissues.
Tenascin-C (TNC) is highly expressed in cancer tissues.
Dr. Villani ME the lead scientist said, "The data indicate that the purification yields of mAb H10, using a transient expression system boosted by the p19 silencing suppressor, are exceptionally high when compared with the results reported previously, providing a technique for the over-expression of anticancer".
In other words, artichoke improved the function of a gene associated with tumor expression and antibody for the treatment of cancer.
Furthermore, the active product isolated from the Jerusalem artichoke tubers obtained after wound-drought stress used for the treatment of cancers also to exhibited free radical expression in the induction of cytotoxicity against cancer cell line, through its 18-kDa polypeptide and 28-kDa polypeptide,
Where 18-kDa polypeptide exerted a similar effect as a superoxide dismutase (SOD)and 28-kDa polypeptide to the alkaline phosphatase (AP).
Dr. and colleagues said, in the final report. "The superoxide dismutase polypeptide was shown to be involved in the antitumor activity, but the presence of smaller factors (MW<10 kDa), such as salicylic acid, can enhance this activity".
Taken altogether, artichoke may be considered for the prevention and treatment of cancer, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bilberry Promotes Normal Gut Microbiome for Optimizing Overall Health
On seeking natural therapy with no side effects, scientists may have a whole fruit for the improvement of the ratio of the gut microbiome, according to studies.
Gut microbiota is the microbe population (tens of trillions) that lives in the intestine.
Gut microbiota plays a critical role in human overall health by assisting nutrient metabolism, xenobiotic and drug metabolism and maintaining the structural integrity of the gut mucosal barrier, immunomodulation, and protecting the gut against pathogens.
However, according to the joint study led by the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology, Asian Healthcare Foundation, these functions in adults may be disrupted by several factors, including the use of antibiotics or antibiotics and diet.
Furthermore, gut microbiota also constitutes a natural defensive barrier to gut infection in a stable condition. Alternation of the gut microbiota due to infection, diet and/or lifestyle has been found to induce diseases, such as inflammatory bowel diseases and cancer.
People with colon cancer were found to associate with gut microbial imbalance (dysbiosis). In other words, many changes in the bacterial composition of the gut microbiota may contribute to the development of colorectal cancer.
Out of the many risk factors involved in the alternation of the gut microbiome, some researchers suggested that xenobiotics and toxicological effects may have a strong impact on human health.
Dr. the lead scientist in the assessment of gut microbiome change on chemical risk said, " it is highly likely that the toxic effects of ingested xenobiotics are significantly enhanced or reduced by the gut microbiota".
And, "Xenobiotic suppression or enhancement of proliferation of specific groups of intestinal microbes may lead to alterations of the composition of the intestinal bacterial population, which in turn is known to affect the permeability of the intestinal epithelium... It is thus highly likely that the integrity of the gut barrier can be affected by the changes induced by microbiota-disrupting chemicals. This may, in turn, lead to alteration in the uptake of the given chemical, as well as of other toxic and/or beneficial components present in the gut".
The results strongly suggested that the injection of xenobiotic can cause a significant change in the ratio gut microbiota homeostasis, a leading cause of a number of chronic diseases.
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
Researchers on finding a natural remedy that processed a strong effect in the improvement of the digestive system examined the bilberry effect on intestinal barrier function and digestive enzyme activity, by regulating the gut microbiota in aging rats.
Aging rats selected to the study were orally injected by a medium-dose bilberry anthocyanin extract (20 mg per kg bw per day) which is considered the optimum amount to regulate the intestinal function.
Injection of the experimental medium-dose bilberry anthocyanin extract showed a significant improvement of the gut/microbiome by allowing the good bacterias to growth and restricting the growth of harmful bacterias in the digestive tract.
Compared to the experimental dose, high-dose bilberry anthocyanin extract consumption altered some intestinally beneficial bacteria in an adverse way.
Furthermore, according to the tested analysis, the promotion of the gut microbiome was correlated with the changes in short-chain fatty acids and the intestinal mucosal barrier in the absorption of nutrients.
Moreover, the medium-dose bilberry anthocyanin extract also decreased the activity of digestive enzymes in the tested rats.
In other words, the tested dose improved the digestive function through promoting healthy gut/microbiome and nutrients absorption with the needs of low levels of digestive enzymes which have been found in lower levels in the aging population.
Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanin may be considered a functioning remedy for the improvement of levels of gut/microbiome for optimal health, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Anise In Ameliorated Risk, Progression and Treatment of Oxidative Stress Related Chronic Diseases
Herbal Anise may have positive and potential effects in inhibited overexpression of oxidative stress in initiated disease expression, some scientists postulated.
Oxidative stress is a condition characterized by overexpression of ROS in compared to low levels of antioxidants in the body.
Anise is a flowering plant of the species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belongings to the family Apiaceae native to Egypt and the Mediterranean region, used in traditional herbal medicine as a fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners and stomachic, anti-septic, anti-spasmodic,...
Chemical constituents
Anethole, D-pinene, I-phellandrene, Alpha-terpineol, Safrol, Methyl chavicol, Resin, Shikimic acid, etc.
In the study to evaluated Anise essential oil effect in metabolic disease favism, an acute hemolytic anemia caused by G6PD deficiency of a total of 48 male albino rats divided into six groups: group 1 orally administrated 1 mL distilled water, group 2 orally received 300 mg/kg anise oil, group 3 orally administrated 100 mg/kg anethole over a seven-day period, group 4 favism-induced rats, group 5 orally administrated 300 mg/kg anise oil and group 6 orally administrated 100 mg/kg anethole once a day over a seven-day period prior to favism induction, researchers found that groups treated with Anise anethole showed a significantly inhibited the reduced-levels of hemoglobin, hematocrit, red and white blood cell counts, serum glucose, blood glutathione, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, in compared to group 4 favism-induced rats.
Hemoglobin is the protein molecule in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to the body's tissues and returns carbon dioxide from the tissues back to the lungs and low levels of hemoglobin is a biomarker of anemia.
Hematocrit is a ratio of the volume of red blood cells to the total volume of blood. Low levels of hematocrit are an indication of anemia with the destruction of red blood cells and the risk of bleeding.
Blood glutathione is antioxidant produced by our body. Low levels of glutathione are associated with the patient with chronic diseases caused by overexpression of ROS.
Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase chronic deficiency is associated with the development of favism.
Truly, by inhibited reduced levels of glutathione (GSH), a tripeptide with a free sulfhydryl group, Anise improved the antioxidant status through its antioxidant expression and an improved natural antioxidant in the tissue by increased glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase expression.
These results suggested that Anise exerted significant antioxidant activity in inhibited oxidative stress in the induction of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency in facilitating the development of favism.
Further analysis of the antioxidative effect of different extracts and essential oil from Pimpinella anisum L. seeds in carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced toxic models including human liver cancer cell line HepG2 and male Sprague-Dawley rats, researchers found that application of the n-hexane extract found in Anise essential oil effectively attenuated CCl4-induced toxicity through improved the expression of cell viability, cellular reduced and oxidized glutathione and lipid peroxidation in HepG2 cells.
The final assessment suggested that although Anise exerted strong anti-ROS production, some extracts and essential oil do not have a profound effect in reduced oxidative stress expression by initiated antioxidant production of both in the herb and the host.
Dr. Jamshidzadeh A, after taking into account of further analysis, the lead author said, "As the oxidative stress markers were ameliorated, it might be concluded that anise seed possesses protective effects probably due to its antioxidant constituents".
The above differentiation was supported by the study conducted by Dr. Conforti F and colleagues in the assessment of the chemical profile of Anise.
According to the results, Anise extract containing most abundant major components of monoterpenes trans-anethole (54.5%), limonene (13.5%), and sabinene (4.4%) displayed a significant antioxidant activity (50% inhibitory concentration [IC(50)], 3.02 mg/mL) observed by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assay.
Moreover, the administration of the extract also inhibited the overproduction of nitric oxide (NO) in precipitated oxidative stress in the induction of cardiac and pulmonary dysfunction.
Finally, researchers postulated that Anise extract with abundant petrochemicals has a significant anti-oxidative stress effect through its antioxidant and antioxidants produced by the host body without inducing toxicity to nearby healthy cells.
Taken together, Anise may be considered as a functional herb in ameliorated risk, progression and treatment of oxidative stress in the induction of chronic diseases such as atherosclerosis, cancer, diabetics, rheumatoid arthritis,...
