In the United States, approximately, asthma affects 25 million people, 7 million of them are children.

                   The Effectiveness of Vitamin K

Vitamin K(K1, phylloquinone; K2, menaquinones), is a fat soluble vitamin, found abundantly in leafy green vegetables, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts, etc. It is best known for promotion of coagulation and bone health.
Epidemiological studies focusing vitamin K in reduced risk and treatment of asthma have been inconclusive(a)(b)(c).

Menaquinone (vitamin K2), a variant of vitamin K, in a double blind study of 191 patients with bronchial asthma, showed an effective rate of 90.9% in mild patients, 86.7% in moderate patients, and 72.7% in severe patients(1). Other researchers suggested that treatment of menaquinone for long periods in patients with bronchial asthma indicated a significant inhibition of the disease(2). The data base of PubMed showed limitation in quantity of the research, we, therefore make no conclusion of the effectiveness of the vitamin in reduced risk and treatment of asthma. Overdoses can induce symptoms of Skin rash, Diarrhea, Nausea, Vomiting, Anemia, etc. Please make sure you follow the guideline of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies.

The smoothie for people with high risk Polymyalgia Rheumatica and Polymyalgia Rheumatica
Yield: 2 serving (about 8 ounce each)
1 1/4 cups grape
1/4 cup pumpkin
1 cup green tea drink (Make from 4 grams of green tea, and a cup of hot water lipped for 5 minutes. Set aside for cooling to room temperature)

1. Place all ingredients in a blender and puree about 1 minute
2. Blend on high speed about 1 minute or until the mixture is thick and the ice is well crushed. Add more green tea drink if needed
3. Serve immediately

The finding the natural ingredients for improvement of Polymyalgia Rheumatica is considered as a dream of many scientist. Unfortunately, many compounds found effective in initial studying failed to confirm the potential in large sample size and multi center. Some even produce conflicted results in second and further studies.

Scientist at the some research centers may have found the way to reduce risk and treatment of inflammatory rheumatic disease such as Polymalagia Arthritis. Green tea(1), Grape(1) and pumpkins(1) may be one of the findings with potential and pharmaceutical ingredients.

Polymalagia Arthritis is defined as a condition a common inflammatory rheumatic disease which cause pain, stiffness and tenderness in large muscles, including muscles shoulders and pelvic girdleas a result of the presence of a synovitis in proximal joints and periarticular structures, causing musculoskeletal symptoms in PMR.

Green tea, is a precious drink in traditional Chinese culture and used exceptional in socialization for more than 4000 thousand years. Due to its commercial values and health effects, green tea now has been cultivated all over the world in suitable climate. Its flavonoids play an important role in expression of antioxidative, anti-inflammatory and anti-neoplastic activities against chronic inflammatory diseases, including PMR through inhibiting the disorders induced by inflammatory pathways(2).
According to the Banaras Hindu University, (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), the predominangreen tea polyphenol also inhibits enzyme activities and signal transduction of DNA is transferred from one bacterium to another by a virus pathways related to the inflammation and joint destruction in arthritis(3).

Resveratrol (RES), is a well-known antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound found abundantly in grapes.
Use conjunction with Norisoboldine (NOR), the combination attenuated OC differentiation and bone erosion through the activation of AhR in bone regulation and the subsequent inhibition of NF-κB and proinlammatory pathways(4), according to the China Pharmaceutical University.
Also when use together with curcumin, the combination expressed a remarkable anti-inflammatory activity with inhibition of 37-55% arthritis induction between day 16 and 22(5).
Dr. Wang P and colleagues at the Chengyang People's Hospital of Qingdao City said," Resveratrol has been shown to exert anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, while sodium alginate is a common pharmaceutic adjuvant with antioxidative and immunomodulatory properties" in the study of resveratrol on acute gouty arthritis(6).

Pumpkin is the genus Cucurbita and belong the family Cucurbitaceae. The origin of pumpkins is unknown, although many people believe that they have originated in North America. Its phytochemical, cucurbitacins have exhibited the anti inflammatory diseases and may also be used for reduced risk and treatment of Polymyalgia Rheumatica(PMR)(1).
According to the Cairo University, Cairo University, cucurbitacins found in Iberis amara, extract promotes anti rheumatic inflammatory conditions to help safeguard the integrity of the endothelium and reduces the risk of vascular complications(7).
The University of South of Santa Catarina study also lend a support of anti inflammatory effect of cucurbitacins through suppressing the COX-2 proinflammatory cytokines(8).
In animal model, Dr. Escandell JM and the research team at the Universitat de València said," experimental data on the chronic model, together with previously reported activity on acute and subchronic experimental models, justify the anti-inflammatory activity of cucurbitacin R and provide further evidence for the therapeutic potential of a group of natural products as anti-inflammatory agents"(9).

People who are at increased risk of Polymyalgia Rheumatica(PMR) due to aging, occupations, family history, gene mutation,....should drink at least one cup daily and people with Polymyalgia Rheumatica(PMR) should drink the smoothie as much as they can, depending to digestive and liver toleration.
Change of life style and diet pattern are also recommended.

In the United States, approximately, asthma affects 25 million people, 7 million of them are children.

                   The Effectiveness of Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble secosteroids found in small amount in few foods, including salmon, mackerel, sardines and tuna. The vitamin plays an important role in modulation of cellular proliferation, apoptosis induction, tumor growth suppression and promotion in absorption of minerals, including calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphate and zinc.

1. Serum of vitamin D
Epidemiological studies, linking the levels of serum 25-OH vitamin D withasthma may be inconclusive. The study of included 4,999 adults aged 30-60 years in 1999-2001. 3,032 of those included at baseline also participated at a follow-up examination 5 years later and 3,727 answered a 10 year follow-up questionnaire, showed no association of serum serum 25-OH vitamin D and the risk of asthma in Danish adults(1)(1a). Some researchers in the study of general Korean population suggested that vitamin D-insufficiency may have an increased likelihood of atopic dermatitis, but not asthma, allergic rhinitis, or IgE sensitization(2)(2a). But the study by Royal Brompton Hospital, London indicated otherwise of relationships between serum vitamin D, lung function, and pathology in children with severe, therapy-resistant asthma(STRA)(3)(4) and 25 hydroxy vitamin D insufficiency wass associated with bronchial asthma(4a) On the other hand, the study of iMayo Clinic indicated the correlation between serum 25(OH)D concentrations and positive pneumococcal antibody levels in all subjects regardless of asthma(5).

2. The benefits
According to the study by Universitätsmedizin Berlin, oral administration of vitamin D in vitamin D deficiency induced asthma, showed an increased expression of CD38 on B cells and a decreased T-cell-dependent proinflammatory cytokine production(6). In support to above study, Vitamin D found to decreased inflammatory cytokine production from T-cell subsets implicated in asthma, according to Florida Atlantic University(7). In patient with steroid-resistant (SR) and steroid-sensitive (SS) asthma, oral administration of vitamin D, although exerted its anti-inflammatory and corticosteroid-enhancing effects in monocytes of patients with SR asthmaand patients with SS asthma, the responses to corticosteroids in patients with SR asthma remained significantly lower than those in patients with SSasthma(8). Other in the study of the effect of vitamin D in severe therapy-resistant asthma (STRA) patients, showed an positive effect of 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3, the active form of vitamin D in culture enhanced dexamethasone-induced IL-10 (Defective IL-10 expression causes a significantly diminished levels of anti-inflammatory interleukin (IL)-10))without marked effects on IL-13 or IL-17A production(9). Patients with severe asthmaexhibited increased levels of TH17 cytokines. The study of King's College London, also suggested that 1,25(OH)2D3 inhibits TH17 cytokine production in all patients with moderate-to-severe asthma(10), enhances the frequency of Treg cells(11)and upregulates CD200 on peripheral human CD4+ T cells(12).

Taken altogether, without going into reviews, vitamin D used conjunction with other anti asthma medicine and its the active form 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3, may be associated to reduced risk and treatment of asthmatic diseases. Over doses of vitamin D supplement may cause excessive calcium absorption, calcification, Urinary stones etc. please make sure to follow the guideline of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies.

The smoothie for people with Rheumatoid Arthritis and high risk of the disease

Yield: 2 serving (about 8 ounce each)
3/4  cup grape
3/4 cup orange
1 cup green tea drink (Make from 4 grams of green tea, and a cup of hot water lipped for 5 minutes. Set aside for cooling to room temperature)

1. Place tall ingredients in a blender and puree about 1 minute
2. Blend on high speed about 1 minute or until the mixture is thick and the ice is well crushed.
3. Serve immediately

The finding of a natural source for reduced risk and treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis has encountered many obstacles, many ingredients showed initially the promising result in animal studies have not produced same potentials in either large sample size and mutli centers human trials.

Rheumatoid Arthritis is defined a chronic disorder as a result of inflammation, affecting mostly the flexible (synovial) joints and tissues and organs in the body. The disease affects more women than men and generally occurs after the ages of 40, causing the diminished quality of life of many elders.

Green Tea Epigallocatechin-3-Gallate(1)Grape(5) and Orange(10), may be next generation of pharmaceutical ingredients for reduced risk and treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis due to their effects in suppressing autoimmunity. According to the joint studu lead by the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, the polyphenol (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), EGCG significantly suppressed T cell proliferation and relative frequencies of CD4 T cells, CD8 T cells and B cell subsets through mediated the immunoregulation(1).
In rats with adjuvant-induced arthritis, green tea treatment effectively normalized the activity of glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase, a key enzyme of an important metabolic route (pentose monophosphate pathway) that are substantially modified by arthritis(2).
Dr. Ramadan G and colleagues in the expression of green tea used for treatment against inflammatory diseases including Rheumatoid Arthritis suggested that the potent of green tea in reduced inflammtory expression may be due to its inhibition of proinflammatory activities(3).
Furthermore, green tea extract (GTE) aslo was found effectively in regulating chemokine production and chemokine receptor expression in human RA synovial fibroblasts and rat adjuvant-induced arthritis (AIA), through expression of anti inflammatory cytokines pathways(4).

Intake of grape with abundant quercetin, resveratrol and procyanidins may be able to modulate chronic inflammatory diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease,....(5).
Resveratrol is best known to consist significant anti-inflammatory effects on AA rats, which may be associated with the reduction of COX-2 and PGE2 inflammatory mediators(8)..
According to the Hyogo College of Medicine, resveratrol induces apoptosis MH7A human rheumatoid arthritis synovial cells by activating caspase-9( in apoptosis and cytokine processing) and the effector caspase-3(responsible for apoptosis execution) along mitochondrial disruption(6).
Vam3, a derivative of resveratrol was found to interact with spleen tyrosine kinase (SYK) which plays a crucial role in adaptive immune receptor signalling, according to the joint study lead by the Peking Union Medical College, in extracellular antigen-induced crosslinking of type of antibody in the pathogenesis of autoimmune disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis(7).

Orange is a species of Citrus Sinensis, belong to the family Rutaceae and native to the Southeast Asia. Orange is round citrus fruits with finely-textured skins, orange in color and one of most popular fruits in the world. Chronic intake of citrus fruits is found to associate to lower RA risk(10)
According to the Iwaki Meisei University, Orange flavanone naringin showed effectively in inhibit the inflammatory responses in mice with collagen-induced arthritis (CIA), a mouse model for RA(9).
In collagen-induced arthritic mice, nobiletin found abundantly in orange and other citrus fruits effectively interferes with gene expression of ADAMTS-4 and -5(inflammatory regulated enzymes ), and thereby prevents cartilage destruction in CIA mice(11).

Taking altogether, people who are at increased of Rheumatoid Arthritis(RA) due to family history, gene mutation,....should drink at least one cup daily and people with Rheumatoid Arthritis(RA) should drink the smoothie as much as they can, depending to digestive and liver toleration.
Change life style and diet pattern are also recommended.

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the air way of the lung with recurring symptoms, such as wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing. The disease affects people of all ages, and mostly starts during childhood. In the study of 463,801 children aged 13-14 years in 155 collaborating centres in 56 countries. Children self-reported, through one-page questionnaires, symptoms of these three atopic disorders. In 99 centres in 42 countries, a video asthma questionnaire was also used for 304,796 children, found that for asthma symptoms, the highest 12-month prevalences were from centres in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Republic of Ireland, followed by most centres in North, Central, and South America; the lowest prevalences were from centres in several Eastern European countries, Indonesia, Greece, China, Taiwan, Uzbekistan, India, and Ethiopia(1). In the United States, approximately, asthma affects 25 million people, 7 million of them are children.

The effective of Vitamin C against Asthma
Vitamin C, also known as L-ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin, found in fresh fruits, berries and green vegetables. It is best known for its free radical scavengers activity and regenerating oxidized vitamin E for immune support.
Epidemiological studies, linking vitamin C in reduced risk and treatment of asthma have been inconclusive(a)(b)(c)(d).

The study of the effects of antioxidant nutritional status with allergic rhinitis (AR) in Korean schoolchildren aged 6-12 years, in a total of 4,554 children in Seoul, Korea, showed a positive effect of Vitamin C intake negatively associated with an increased risk of AR symptoms(1). According to the Rabin Medical Center, vitamin C also enhanced the protective effect on the hyperreactive airways of patients with exercise-induced asthma (EIA)(2). Oxidative stress mediated by reactive oxygen species is known to contribute to the inflammatory process of bronchial asthma. According to Dr. Ruprai RK., in the study of the oxidative stress plasma malondialdehyde andascorbic acid (Vitamin C) showed an oxidative imbalance in asthmatic patients and antioxidant supply may have a beneficial impact on the free radical induced injury and improvement of respiratory reserve in Asthmatics(3)(4). In Saudi asthmatic patients, King Saud University study, exhibition of oxidative stress and defective antioxidant status of these patients suggested these may be primary causative factor in the pathogenesis of asthma(5).
In mega doses, vitamin C in asthmatic patients decreased airway hyperreactivity to methacholine, inflammatory cell numbers in brochoalveolar lavage fluid, and moderated reduction of perivascular and peribronchiolar inflammatory cell infiltration(6).

The smoothie for people with  Osteoarthritis  and high risk of the disease

Yield: 2 serving (about 8 ounce each)
1 1/2 cups tomatoes
1/2 cup low fat cow milk
1/2 cup green tea drink (Make from 2 grams of green tea, a slice of ginger and a cup of hot water lipped for 5 minutes, and let cool to room temperature)

1. Place tall ingredients in a blender and puree about 1 minute
2. Blend on high speed about 1 minute or until the mixture is thick and the ice is well crushed.
3. Serve immediately

The finding of a natural source for reduced risk and treatment of Osteoarthritis  has encountered many obstacles, many ingredients showed initially the promising result in animal studies have not produced same potentials in either large sample size and mutli centers human trials.
Osteoarthritis (OA), a form of arthritis, is defined as a condition of as a result of aging causes of wear and tear on a joint, affecting over 25 million people in the United States in alone.
Recent studies suggested that the combination of green tea may process a therapeutic values for a potential natural formula used for reduced risk and treatment of Osteoarthritis.

Green tea contains more amount of antioxidants than any drinks or food with the same volume, and is the leaves of Camellia sinensis, undergone minimal oxidation during processing, originated from China.
Green tea polyphenol, significantly slows OA disease progression and alleviate the symptoms of pain, physical stress, and mental stress in post-traumatic osteoarthritis (OA) mouse model, through inhibited expression of pain expression markers and inflammatory cytokines(1).
Other study lead by Dr. Oliviero F also suggested that Epigallocatechin-3-gallate, another major chemical constituent of green tea reduced mononuclear cell infiltration and overexpression of proinflammatory mediators is common in early and late OA through protection or modulation of the inflammatory response to calcium pyrophosphate crystals form deposits in the joint and surrounding tissues(2).
Dr Katiyar SK, and Dr. Raman C. said, "The use of green tea polyphenols may be beneficial as a therapeutic addition to biologics that control IL-1β( a major cytokine driving the inflammatory processes) activity by increasing effectiveness and/or reducing dosage"(3).

Tomato is a red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belongs to family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, tomato is grown world wide for commercial purpose
and often in green house.
Tomato, containing high amount of carotenoids, retinol, and tocopherols may also be effective in influence of the development and progression of osteoarthritis (OA)(4). According to the Nagoya University Graduate School of Medicine, lower serum value of beta-/gamma-tocopherols was found to associate to risk of knee OA patients(4) and higher serum of carotenoids may protect against knee OA(5), according to the National Cancer Institute in the study of Two-hundred cases with radiographic knee OA and 200 controls randomly selected from the Johnston County Osteoarthritis Project(5).

Other researchers suggested that daily intake of cow milk may be beneficiary for people over the age of 50 on symptomatic knee OA.(6). The King George Medical University study of 180 knee osteoarthritis (KOA) subjects said," Certain food groups, such as fruits, milk/milk products, and meat/poultry are beneficial for KOA"(7).
Furthermore, the American College of Rheumatology also supported the suggestion of "frequent milk consumption may be associated with reduced OA progression in women". But further studies are necessary to validate replication of these novel findings(8).

Taking altogether, people who are at increased risk of Osteoarthritis  due to family history, gene mutation, aging,.. .....should drink at least one serving daily and people with chronic Osteoarthritis  should drink the juices at least 3 times a day, depending to digestive toleration.
Change life style and diet pattern are also recommended.

Respiratory Disease
is defined as medical conditions which affect the breathing organ and tissues including Inflammatory lung disease, Obstructive lung diseases, Restrictive lung diseases, Respiratory tract infections, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli, the nerves and muscles breathing , etc,.

                                  Asthma

The effective of Vitamin A against Asthma

Vitamin A is a general term of Vitamin A Retinol, retinal, beta-carotene,alpha-carotene, gamma-carotene, and beta-cryptoxanthin best known for its functions for vision health and antioxidant scavenger and essential for growth and differentiation of a number of cells and tissues.
Recommended intakes of vitamin A, according to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies (formerly National Academy of Sciences) is 600 µg daily as extremely high doses (>9000 mg) can be toxicity as causes of dry, scaly skin, fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite, bone and joint pains, headaches, etc.
Epidemiological studies linking vitamin A in reduced risk and treatment of asthma have been inconclusive(a)(b)(c)(d)(e), but according to the University G. D'Annunzio, and Respiratory Pathophysiology Center, dietary supplementation or adequate intake of lycopene and vitamin A rich foods may be beneficial in asthmatic subjects(f).

1. Retinols
Serum vitamin A concentrations was found significantly lower in asthmatic subjects than healthy control subjects and administration of all-trans retinoic acid, ATRA dramatically attenuated airway inflammation through inhibiting Th2 and Th17 differentiation and/or functions. according to the Ruijin Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine(1). ORMDL3 is a candidate gene of childhood onset asthma, and high-transcript of ORMDL3 is associated with the development of asthma. According to Nanjing Medical University, all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) is an active metabolite of Vitamin A, reduced the risk of asthma through maintained airway epithelial integrity, inhibited asthma effector cells differentiation, modulating immune response, possibly via facilitates ORMDL3 production probable through PKA/CREB(2). Also in all-trans retinoic acid, ATRA, the Tehran University of Medical Sciences study suggested that ATRA diverted the human immune response in neutral conditions (without adding polarizing cytokines) by increasing FOXP3+ cells and decreasing RORγt+ cells(3). In rats with asthma, ATRA was found to alleviate airway hyperresponsiveness and airway remodeling possibly through decreasing the protein expression of MMP-9(4). The study at 1Inserm U700 and Université Paris 7, in a mouse model of ovalbumin (OVA)-induced T helper (Th) 2-type responses and airway remodeling, indicated a effectiveness of liposomally encapsulated ATRA (Lipo-ATRA) in exacerbates allergic immune and inflammatory responses, most likely through promoting Th2 development(5).
Unfortunately, according to Johns Hopkins University, even though animal models suggest that vitamin A deficiency affects lung development adversely and promotes airway hyperresponsiveness, and may predispose to an increased risk of asthma, but vitamin A supplementation early in life was not associated with a decreased risk of asthma in an area with chronic vitamin Adeficiency(6).

2. Carotenoids (beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, gamma-carotene and beta-cryptoxanthin) Carotenoids, plant pigments, converted to vitamin A after intake, play an important role in prevention and treatment of some diseases through it antioxidant effects. In the study of the effect of vitamin intake among asthmatic subject, researchers at the Hung Kuang University, found that nutritional supplement therapy including beta carotene may improve dysregulated oxidant and antioxidant status, inflammation and immune responses, pulmonary function, and health-related quality of life in patients with mild to moderate allergic asthma(7). The John Hunter Hospital study of asthmatic subjects with airway hyper-responsiveness (AHR), indicated a reduced levels of beta-carotene and alpha-tocopherol compared with those without AHR, possibly due to impaired antioxidant defences and are thus most susceptible to the damaging effects of oxidative (8). Other researchers suggested that the imbalance of antioxidants found in asthmatic patients may be the possible causes of the disease(9) and modifying the dietary intake ofcarotenoids alters clinical asthma outcomes with improvements evident only through increased whole foods intake, not supplements(10)
But according to the study of Yamaguchi University, there was no significant association for asthma in Japanese youth(11) and the study of a total of 423 children from a rural area of Thailand, in a Health Interview for AsthmaControl questionnaire, showed no correlation of dietary intake ofcarotenoids between asthmatic and non-asthmatic children(12).

Taken altogether, using vitamin A in prevention and treatment of asthmatic patient remains controversial. According to the study in summarized the important of vitamin A in treatment of asthma, excessive intake of vitamin Amay increase the risk or severity of asthma in industrialized countries whereas vitamin A deficiency continues to increase mortality from infectious diseases in developing countries(12)(13). Overdoses can lead to toxic symptoms. Please make sure you follow the guideline of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies.
