Cancer is a class of diseases caused by cell growth and multiplication disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of the DNA.
After colonizing the entire tissues of the specific organ, the oversize tumor cell can travel a distance away from the originated site to invade other healthy tissues, via lymph or blood.
The most advanced stage of cancer may result in the death of the patients.
The lung is a vital organ located near the backbone on either side of the heart with major functions to inhale oxygen from the air to the bloodstream that nourishes the body cells and exhale carbon dioxide from the bloodstream.
Lung cancer is a chronic condition characterized by cell growth irregularly and disorderly in the lung tissue.
Most cases of lung cancer caused by the alternation of calls DNA begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the lung.
At the advanced stage, the cancer cell from the lung can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs through the circulation of fluid and blood, leading to the secondary metastasis.
According to statistics, in 2017, 28,600 Canadians were diagnosed with lung cancer, representing 14% of all new cancer cases. Also in 2017, lung cancer caused the death of 21,100 Canadians.
Smoking although it is a major cause of lung cancer, however, not all lung cancer patients with lung cancer are smokers. Nonsmokers' lung cancer may be caused by exposure to radon, secondhand smoke, air pollution, or other factors.
Some researchers suggested that lung cancer in many incidences is associated with oxidative stress as found in advanced lung cancer patients.
Dr. Filaire E the lead scientist in the examination of the oxidative stress in the risk lung cancer said, "Oxidative stress also plays important roles in the pathogenesis of many diseases, including aging, degenerative disease, and cancer. Among cancers, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer in the Western world".
And, "Distinct measures of primary and secondary prevention have been investigated to reduce the risk of morbidity and mortality caused by lung cancer. Among them, it seems that physical activity and nutrition have some beneficial effects".
Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used over thousands of year to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches and obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of lung disease, researchers examined the effects of purified a polysaccharide, TFPB1, from the flower buds of Tussilago farfara on lung cancer.
In vitro, TFPB1 not only inhibited cell proliferation but also induced cancer cell apoptosis in of A549 cells.
More precisely, TFPB1 kills lung cancer cells by inhibiting the expression of kinase and proteins such as phosphorylation of Akt and Bcl-2 expression involved in multiple cellular processes including apoptosis and exhibiting the protein associated with caspase involved in pro-apoptosis such as Bax expression.
Based on the findings, researchers aid, "TFPB1 exhibited anti-proliferative and anti-apoptotic effect partly depending on the suppression of Akt signaling pathway." and "These findings provided us a potential chemotherapeutic strategy for the treatment of human non-small cell lung cancer".
Taken altogether, coltsfoot may be considered a remedy for the treatment of lung cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
