Digestive cancer is a group of medical conditions associated with irregular cell growth in the tissue on the gastrointestinal tract.
Most cases of gastrointestinal cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining in a specific organ, before penetrating into deeper layers to form a solid tumor through proliferation.
Most common cancers of the gastrointestinal tract are
*Esophagus
The esophagus or gullet is the tube that leads foods from the pharynx to the stomach.
Esophageal cancer is caused by abnormal cell growth in the cells that line the upper part of the esophagus or glandular cells in the lower part of the esophagus that connected with the stomach.
Esophageal cancer starts from the lining of the esophagus, then later penetrate in the wall of the esophagus and spread to the lymph node around the bottom of the esophagus, stomach and the chest.
* Gallbladder cancer
The gallbladder is a small organ under the liver with a function that aids the digestive system in fat metabolism with storing bile produced by the liver.
Gallbladder cancer arises from the cells of the tissue of the gallbladder. It is common cancer in central and South America, central and eastern Europe, Japan and northern India, but rare in North America.
*Liver cancer
The liver is the largest internal organ located in the upper right portion of the abdomen, beneath your diaphragm and above the stomach.
Liver cancer is a condition caused by the uncontrolled growth of hepatocellular cells in the liver. Since the organ is a soft tissue with less nerve, most cases of liver cancer are diagnosed in the later stage of cancer.
According to the statistic, liver cancer remains the fifth most common malignancy in men and the eighth in women worldwide.
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common form of primary liver cancer.
*Pancreas cancer pancreas is an oblong flattened gland in the digestive and endocrine system located in the abdomen.
By secreting pancreatic juice to the small intestine, pancreas helps to break down carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids.
Cancer of pancreas or pancreatic cancer is a chronic condition associated with irregular cell growth in the ducts (an exocrine component of the pancreas) that carry pancreatic juices with cancer of an epithelium that originates in glandular tissue which accounts for over 75 - 90% of all cases of exocrine cancers.
*Stomach cancer
Stomach located between the esophagus and the small intestine is a muscular, hollow and an important organ of the digestive tract.
Stomach cancer is a condition characterized by abnormal growth of the mucus-producing cells of the inside lining of the stomach. Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of stomach cancer.
* Bowel cancer
Human Bowl is divided into 2 parts, the small bowel, is associated with the digestion and absorption of food. large bowel including the colon and rectum that involve absorption of water from the small bowel contents and break down of certain materials in the feces into substances of which some of them to be reabsorbed and reused by the body.
Bowel cancer is a condition caused by the abnormal proliferation of cells in the colon, rectum, or vermiform appendix.
Bowel cancer is relatively very common and slowly growing and progressing in a predictable way.
Bowel cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in developed countries, including the US and Canada.
Besides some of the symptoms associated with specific types of cancer, most gastrointestinal cancers shared the general symptoms of unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting.
The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.
Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.
With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of cancer in the digestive system, researchers examined the relationship between total allium, garlic, and onion intake on the risk of cancer of the upper aerodigestive tract (UADT).
According to the results of data of published observational studies (21 case-control and four cohort studies), using a meta-analytic approach and random effects models, onion exerted the relative risk of 0.72 compared to 0.79 for total allium, 0.74 for garlic for the highest versus the lowest consumption.
Total allium including onion consumption showed an inverse relation apparently stronger in case-control studies.
These results suggested that onion has a moderate inverse association with the risk of squamous cell carcinoma of the UADT.
Additionally, according to the University Laboratories of Medical Research (LURM) in the examination of the effects of dietary components on cancer of the digestive system, onion contains active components that can influence the initiation and progression of cancer.
Furthermore, these chemical compounds have also been found to inhibit cell proliferation and metastasis, induce apoptosis.
More precisely, onion protected the integrity and viability of the cells in the digestive system through it's antioxidant, cytotoxic, and pro-apoptotic properties.
Taken altogether, onion may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of cancer of the digestive system, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical Betacyanins Protects the Liver Against Injury in Vivo
The liver is the largest internal organ not only plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body but also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance which aids digestion, builds cell membranes and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.
Liver disease is a class of medical condition characterized by reducing partly or completely the function of the liver, including liver injury.
Most common symptoms of liver injury are totally depending on the severity of the injury that affects the liver function. In serious cases of liver injury, symptoms may include jaundice, pain in your upper right abdomen, abdominal swelling, gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, disorientation or confusion and sleepiness.
Most common causes of liver injury include
* Overdose of certain medication, especially acetaminophen overdose. Believer, it or not, taking too much acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) is the most common cause of acute liver failure in the US.
* Overdose of some prescription medications, including antibiotics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and anticonvulsants is also associated with liver injury.
* Overdose of herbal extracts such as green tea ECG
* Toxins
Exposure to toxic chemicals such as refrigerants and solvents for waxes and eating toxic food such as wild mushroom may cause liver injury.
Out of many risk factors involved in liver injury, some researchers suggested alcohol intoxication, a condition of alcohol poisoning caused by excessively high levels of the recent drinking of ethanol in the blood (alcohol) may be one of the major culprits that cause the long-term injury to the liver.
Over time, excessive alcohol drinking can lead to fatty liver, alcoholic hepatitis, and chronic hepatitis with liver fibrosis or cirrhosis.
The Canadian Liver Association wrote, "When the liver has too much alcohol to handle, normal liver function may be interrupted leading to a chemical imbalance. If the liver is required to detoxify alcohol continuously, liver cells may be destroyed or altered resulting in fat deposits (fatty liver), and more seriously, either inflammation (alcoholic hepatitis), and/or permanent scarring (cirrhosis).
Betacyanins are phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.
With an aim to find a potential compound for the prevention of liver injury, researchers examined the protective effect of betanin, a chemical compound found in the class of betacyanins on the liver.
In fish pretreated with 1, 2, and 4 % betanin in fodder throughout the experiment for 20 days before intraperitoneally injected with 20 % (v/v in peanut oil) CCl4 at a volume of 0.5 mL/kg body weight, researchers showed that* Injection of CCl4 induced liver injury by promoting the expression of liver CYP2E1 which has been found to increased in patient with liver disease, and oxidative stress.
* Elevated serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST)/alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activities and liver histological damage in CCl4 fish were also decreased in the treatment group.
More precisely, compared with the CCl4 control group, the betanin-treated groups exhibited reduced CYP2E1 activity, decreased malondialdehyde level, increased liver antioxidative capacity (increased glutathione level and superoxide dismutase and catalase activities).
In other words, all parameters associated with liver injury in the CCl4 group are inhibited by the administration of betanin.
Based on the finding, researchers said, " In conclusion, betanin attenuates CCl4-induced liver damage in common carp. Moreover, the inhibition of CYP2E1 activity and oxidative stress may have significant roles in the protective effect of betanin".
Taken altogether, betacyanins processed abundantly bioactive compound betanin may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of liver injury, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of betacyanins in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Alliin Promotes Balanced Ratio of Gut Microbiota
Inflammation is a natural response of the immune system with an aim to protect our body against the foreign micro pathogens which may infect the body tissue.
In the early phase of infection, after receiving the message from the central nervous system, the white blood cells of the immune first-line defense macrophages stimulate the production of blood palette to the cover the site of tissue damage and injury and inflammatory cytokines to destroy the microorganisms which try to enter the body through the wound.
Depending on the size of the injury, most small tissues damage are healed by itself within a day or weeks. In some cases, stitches may be needed.
However, if the immune system can not drive out all the invader in a period of 3-8 weeks, it will compromise, leading to low-grade inflammation.
Over time, long-term low-grade inflammation may cause tissue damage and alternation of cell DNA, leading to chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer.
Gut microbiota is a community of bacteria found in the gut. In a healthy individual, the ratio of good and bad bacterias are balanced. However, if the bad bacteria are overgrowing compared to good bacteria, it may lead to dysbiosis which has been found to induce chronic diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, cancer, and autism.
Most common risk factors associated with the imbalanced ratio of gut microbiota include the use of antibiotics, illness, stress, aging, bad dietary habits, and lifestyle.
In other words, if you follow a healthy diet with a high in vegetables and fruits and fewer in processed foods, saturated and trans fat and red meat accompanied by moderate exercise, you may have done a job to protect the balance of gut microbiota.
Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belongings to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.
With an aim to find a potential compound for the protection of gut microbiota, researchers examined the effect of alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine sulfoxide (ACSO)) on plasma ethanol concentration due to alcohol intake by accelerating ethanol metabolism and preventing ethanol absorption from the gut in rats.
Injection of high ACSO content (Garlic-H) suppressed elevation in concentrations of ethanol and acetaldehyde in plasma in the experimental rats without affecting much of the plasma acetate.
Furthermore, the inhibition of alcohol ethanol was attributed to the activity of alliin in the promotion of the activities of alcohol dehydrogenase and aldehyde dehydrogenase, a group of enzymes that catalyze the oxidation of aldehydes.
Compared to the absorption of ethanol from the stomach and jejunum, alliin ACSO and Garlic-H suppressed the absorption of ethanol from the stomach and jejunum, but the suppression in the jejunum was less than in the stomach.
In other words, alliin protects the gut microbiota by inhibiting ethanol absorption and accelerating ethanol metabolism.
In dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis mice and lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW264.7 cell model, oral administration of alliin at 500 mg/kg significantly inhibited the decrease of body weight, improved the DAI and decreased the infiltration of inflammatory cells in colonic tissues.
The levels of pro-inflammatory expressions and pro-inflammation activation proteins in the gut and content of NO, MDA, and MPO of gut stress markers were also inhibited by the injection alliin.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "Our results show that alliin ameliorates DSS-induced ulcerative colitis and inhibits the inflammatory responses in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells partly".
Taken altogether, alliin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of gut microbiota imbalanced as seen in colitis patients, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of alliin in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Green Tea in Alleviated Symptoms and Treatment of Chronic Back Pain
Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in ameliorated symptoms and treatment of chronic back pain, some scientists suggested.
Green tea is a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.
Back pain is a condition of musculoskeletal disorders(MSDs) of the spine caused by various factors, including bone fractures, muscle or ligament injury, arthritis, herniated discs. aging,..
Application of biologically active polyphenol epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) demonstrated a significant effect in reduced back pain through facilitating anti-inflammatory and anti-catabolic activity in patients with intervertebral disc (IVD) disease due to age-related changes in the adult disc in the induction of back pain.
According to the study by the Institute for Biomechanics (D-HEST), ETH Zurich ingestion of green tea EGCG on back pain patients, human IVD cells isolated from patients undergoing surgery due to degenerative disc disease (n = 34) and cultured in 2D or 3D indicated that the phytochemical inhibited levels of inflammatory response activated by IL-1β, a cytokine protein produced by macrophages, with function in contributed to the inflammatory pain hypersensitivity in the site of infection observed by the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), western blotting, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), immunofluorescence and transcription factor assay.
Furthermore, the application also displayed a strong effect in reduced expression of
p38 mitogen-activated protein kinases in mediated inflammatory factors of IL-1β in responded to stress stimuli.
Also, according to the Institute for Biomechanics (D-HEST), in the investigation of the analgesic properties of EGCG, by the von Frey filament test in Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 60), green tea EGCG injection also significantly inhibited the expression of pro-inflammatory mediators as expressed in above and reduced matrix metalloproteinases which have been found to associate to pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines and other proteins to regulate varied aspects of inflammation and immunity.
Moreover, in the radiculopathy pain component, researchers also indicated that EGCG inhibited the inflammation in the precipitated back pain through modulation of the activity of IRAK-1 in glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity in skeletal muscle and p38, c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNK) and nuclear factor NF-κB in responded to stress stimuli in mediated production of pain-related pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β.
Some researchers postulated that back pain may also be induced by muscle degeneration and impairment nerve injury, leading to increased levels of reactive oxygen species in induced tissue apoptosis.
In crushing of the sciatic nerve induced back pain in a tested animal, application of green tea EGCG improved motor function in the toe spread and foot positioning and gain in the percentage motor deficit.
More importantly, EGCG expressed a significant effect on the recovery of sensory innervation in neuropathic pain-like syndrome and improvement of muscle tissues from injured limb with severe histopathological alterations at the end of week 3 post-surgery in treated animals.
According to the RT-PCR assay, EGCG treatment also normalizing the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, the abnormal ratio of the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio has been found to associate in the induction of nerve cell apoptosis as well as inhibited levels of p53 with function in regulated the cell death cycle at days 3 and 7 post-surgery.
These results demonstrated an important effect of green tea EGCG in enhanced functional recovery, protected muscle fibers from cellular death, and improved morphological recovery in skeletal muscle after nerve injuries.
However, in the study of caffeine activity in the modulation of pain perception in chronic pain states of 131 patients with chronic low back pain (64 men and 67 women; mean age = 42.1 years; mean duration of pain = 6.1 years) referred to a multidisciplinary pain clinic over a 2-year period, researchers found that in compared to caffeine intake regardless concentration, caffeine is not related to the global experience of pain and disability in patients with chronic low back pain, although high caffeine use may be embedded in a context of other unhealthy lifestyle behaviors.
Taken together, green tea and its bioactive component epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) may be considered as a functional food in reduced back pain caused by physical damage of the spine and injured nerve cells. Intake of green tea supplement should be taken exceptional care as some cases of liver acute toxicity have been reported in the medical literature.

Phytochemical indicaxanthin, the Best Natural Promotion of Myeloperoxidase Function Against Microbial Infection
Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is a peroxidase enzyme found most abundantly in white blood cells neutrophil granulocytes.
Myeloperoxidase (MPO) processes a critical role that protects our body against the invasion of microorganisms.
In cellular levels, myeloperoxidase (MPO) demonstrated to be a local mediator of tissue damage by stimulating the production of proinflammatory cytokines with an aim to protect the cell against the invasion of pathogens which may enter the body to induce the acute phase of infection.
In other words, MPO deficiency that induces the exaggerates of the inflammatory response and affects neutrophil functions including cytokine production has been found to reduce the immune function in the acute phase of infection that leads to chronic low-grade inflammatory disease.
MPO deficiency has been found in patients with diabetes mellitus, pregnancy, iron deficiency, renal transplantation, thrombotic diseases, lead poisoning, obstructive jaundice, disseminated cancers, hematologic disorders, and neoplasms.
However, genetic preposition may be the primary condition that causes the onset of PMO deficiency.
Dr. Roma Pahwa wrote, "Primary MPO deficiency is inherited as an autosomal recessive disorder and is generally present with varying degree of severity and clinical features. A number of point germline mutations resulting in MPO deficiency have been detected in primary form. Some of these mutations are associated with the defective posttranslational processing of the MPO precursor protein and others with pre-translational defects caused by mutations in the regulatory portion of the MPO gene".
And, " Most of the mutations associated with the hereditary form are R569W (the commonest), Y173C, M251T, G501S, and R499C and a deletion of 14 bases (D14) within exon 9. It is noteworthy that eosinophils are never involved in MPO deficiency since eosinophil peroxidase is encoded by another gene than MPO".
Isobetanin is phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belongings to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard,...
With an aim to find a potent compound for the prevention and treatment of bacterial infection, researchers examiend the effects of phytochemical indicaxanthin on enzyme myeloperoxidase.
The kinetic study conducted by the University of Palermo was to examine the interaction between the betalains, betanin, and indicaxanthin as redox intermediates of compound I and compound II of MPO.
Based on the tested differentiation, both compound I and compound II exhibited significant antioxidant activity was found to associate with the concentration of betanin and indicaxanthin.
The presence of betalains and indicaxanthin exhibited the function of MPO in scavenging hypochlorous acid at pH 7.0 and 25 degrees C.
At neutral pH and depending on their concentration, both betalains and indicaxanthin.can exhibit a stimulating and inhibitory effect on the chlorination activity of MPO.
However, at pH 5.0 both betalains and can only exhibit a stimulating and inhibitory effect on the chlorination activity of MPO in the micromolar concentrations.
Taken altogether, indicaxanthin may be considered a remedy for the promotion of the antibacterial activity of myeloperoxidase, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of isobetanin and betalains in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent liver toxicity.

Green Tea and its Bioactive Polyphenols in Attenuated Early Onset, Progression and Treatment of Osteoporosis
Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reduced onset. progression and treatment of osteoporosis, some scientists suggested.
Green tea is a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.
Osteoporosis is a chronic condition characterized by progression in reduced bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue and considered as a major health problem in both elderly men and women.
In the study to evaluate the effects of ingestion of green tea and green tea bioactive compounds in mitigating bone loss and risk of osteoporotic fractures in both elderly women and men, researchers found that application of green tea and its bioactive compounds exert significant activities in reduced onset of osteoporosis, through its antioxidants and its initiation of the production of natural antioxidant in the body such as glutathione and enzymes (e.g., catalase and superoxide dismutase) in inhibited the levels of ROS in facilitated the chain reaction.
Truly, the overexpression of free radicals has been associated with the change in the balance between activities of osteoblasts and osteoclasts, leading to osteoclasts in destroyed the calcified tissue and induced bone remodeling.
These results demonstrated a significant decrease of risk of fracture by improving bone mineral density and preventing free radicals in damage the bone-forming osteoblasts while suppressing osteoclastic activities.
Moreover, in the review of the effect of green tea and its bioactive components on bone health, researchers indicated that ingestion of green and its bioactive compound display an impressive osteo-protective impact on bone mass and microarchitecture in various bone loss models associated to aging, sex hormone deficiency, and chronic inflammation.
The implication of reduced onset and progression of osteoporosis in aging population due to sex hormone deficiency of the study may be attributed to green tea and its bioactive compound in increased the levels of osteocalcin, a bone formation marker, decreased serum of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP), a bone resorption marker and improved the body in absorption of calcium.
In fact, the serum of serum levels of osteocalcin (OC) and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) is considered as an effective measurement in the rate of bone turn over in patients with osteoporosis.
Interestingly, application of green tea and its bioactive compound also found to modulate the expression of proinflammatory cytokines in the regulation of osteoblasts and osteoclasts, through inhibited the production of C-reactive protein (CRP) production in the liver in demonstrated of inflammation by reduced levels of interleukin-1 and 6(IL-1-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), the sensitive markers of systemic inflammation.
These differentiation were supported by the study in evaluation of the efficacy of green tea polyphenols (GTPs) at mitigating bone loss and microstructure deterioration along with related mechanisms in 40 androgen-deficient aged male rats, a model of male osteoporosis, randomly assigned to received A 2 (sham vs. orchidectomy) × 2 (no GTP and 0.5% GTP in drinking water) for 16 weeks.
At the end of experiment, researchers found that rats treated with GTP demonstrate an increased serum osteocalcin concentrations, bone mineral density, and trabecular volume, number, and strength of femur; increased trabecular volume and thickness and bone formation in both the proximal tibia and periosteal tibial shaft; decreased eroded surface in the proximal tibia and endocortical tibial shaft; and increased liver glutathione peroxidase activity.
These results indicated a strong implication of green tea polyphenols in decreased cortical and trabecular bone loss and increased both bone density by stimulated overexpression of bone formation and reduced bone resorption via antioxidant capacity.
Taken together, green tea and its bioactive polyphenols may be considered as a functional food in ameliorated early-onset, progression and combined with standard medicine for the treatment of osteoporosis. However, the intake of green tea supplement should be taken with extreme care due to recent reports of acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical isobetanin, the Powerful Antioxidant In Beetroot
Antioxidants are stable molecules that inhibit the onset of oxidation caused by free radicals.
Free radicals, on the other hand, are unstable molecules that cause oxidation, with unpaired electrons in the outermost ring.
Free radical scavengers are types of antioxidants which play a critical to neutralize free radical before they can induce a chain reaction which can not be stopped until all unpaired electrons in the outermost are paired.
Overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes in the host body can lead to
oxidative stress, an indicator associated with the unbalanced ratio of the levels of antioxidants/free radicals
Epidemiologically, imbalance ratio of free radicals/antioxidants has been linked to the onset of many chronic diseases, including atherosclerosis, cancer, diabetics, rheumatoid arthritis, post-ischemic perfusion injury, myocardial infarction, cardiovascular diseases, chronic inflammation, stroke due to cellular, lipid and protein damage.
However, free radicals have the potential to be extremely harmful contaminants and extremely helpful for the treatment of cancers through their cytotoxic activity because of its high reactivity,
Believe it or not, free radicals present in the body with a moderate amount are important to the body's cardio-functioning, including the promotion of vascular function.
Some researchers in the examination of the effect of antioxidant-rich foods in the risk-free radicals initiation suggested that diet rich in fruits and vegetables and less in meat and process foods have a lower risk of oxidative stress and oxidative stress-related diseases.
The National Centre for Complementary and Integrative Health in the article "Antioxidants: In-Depth" wrote, "Several decades of dietary research findings suggested that consuming greater amounts of antioxidant-rich foods might help to protect against diseases. Because of these results, there has been a lot of research on antioxidant supplements".
And "Observational studies on the typical eating habits, lifestyles, and health histories of large groups of people have shown that those who ate more vegetables and fruits had lower risks of several diseases, including cardiovascular disease, stroke, cancer, and cataracts".
Isobetanin is Phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belongings to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard,...
On finding a potent ingredient for the treament of disease associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the chemical constituents of betacyanin of Djulis (Chenopodium fromosanum), a native cereal plant in Taiwan.
Betacyanin of Djulis exhibited a significant antioxidant capacity at the maximum absorbance at 530 nm, depending on the pH.
Major chemical compounds that exerted a significant antioxidant capacity are betanin (47.8%), isobetanin (30.0%) with m/z 551.0, and armaranthin (13.6%), isoamaranthinee (8.6%).
According to the purified form, the pigment extract by HPLC, betanin, and isobetanin totally accounted for more than 70% of FRAP(ferric-reducing antioxidant power) which plays an important role in this regard of absorptivity for a variety of antioxidants and free radical scavenging capacity.
These results strongly suggested that betanin and isobetanin antioxidants process a strong antioxidant activity that may provide a basis for its sustainable utilization in the food industry.
Taken altogether, isobetanin may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Green Tea and Its Bioactive Epigallocatechin gallate EGCG in Reduced Risk and Treatment of Cardiovascular Diseases
Green tea containing bioactive polyphenols may have a strong implication in reduced risk and treatment of cardiovascular disease, some scientists postulated.
Cardiovascular disease is a chronic medical condition characterized by narrowed or blocked blood vessels that can lead to a heart attack including chest pain (angina) or stroke.
According to statistic, heart disease is the second leading cause of death, claiming more than 48,000 lives every year.in Canada.
In the differentiation of green tea bioactive polyphenols epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG in risk of cardiovascular disease researchers at the joint study lead by the Colorado State University found that application of EGCG activated the expression of the nuclear erythroid-2 like factor-2 (Nrf2) transcription factor in stimulated transcription of antioxidative genes in protection of cell against oxidative stress in induction of CVD.
Compared to statins, the conventional medicine may be effective in reduced heart attacks and strokes in people at moderate and high risk but it can also cause cancers and multi-drug resistance cancer, EGCG ameliorated the risk of CVD without giving rise to adverse effects.
Further analysis of EGCG efficacy in risk of cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome by searching literature published online of major scientific databases, from 1995 to 2017, scientists found that EGCG exhibits a wide range of therapeutic properties including associated with the inhibition of LDL cholesterol in reduced risk of plague accumulated in the arterial wall in elevated risk of atherosclerosis, attenuated angiotensin II (AngII) through inhibiting transcription factor NF-κB in induced abnormal enlargement, or thickening of the heart muscle, and reduced risk of highly oxidative enzyme myeloperoxidase(MPO) activity in promoted myocardial infarction, as level of myeloperoxidase(MPO) is considered as a biomaker used in assessment of risk of heart attack.
Additionally, EGCG also exerted significant and profound effects in the ameliorated risk of diabetes through lowering plasma glucose and glycated hemoglobin level, inhibited pro-inflammatory factors in elevated inflammation in the early phase of acute infection and chronic infection as well as blocking expression of ROS in stimulated free radical chain reaction through its antioxidant activity.
Dr. Eng QY, after taking into account of other confounders, siad, "EGCG shows different biological activities and in this review, a compilation of how this bioactive molecule plays its role in treating cardiovascular and metabolic diseases".
Moreover, in a total of 9 studies including 259,267 individuals satisfied the criteria and guideline included in the meta-analysis. by examining published literature in evaluated the association between green tea consumption, CVD, and ischemic related diseases. up to October 2014, researchers indicated that for a nongreen tea drinker, risk of CVD was 1.19, intracerebral hemorrhage was 1.24 and cerebral infarction was 1.15 in compared to people who drank <1 cup green tea per day.
Not surprisingly, people who drank 1-3 cups of green tea per day had a reduced risk of myocardial infarction 0.81, and stroke 0.64 in compared to those who drank <1 cup/day and who drank ≥4 cups/day had a reduced risk of myocardial infarction of 0.68 in compared to those who drank <1 cup/day.
And for people who consumed ≥10 cups/day of green tea were also shown to have lower LDL in compared to the group who drank <3 cups/day.
Dr. Pang J, the lead author at the final stage of the experiment said, "(The) meta-analysis provides evidence that consumption of green tea is associated with favorable outcomes with respect to risk of cardiovascular and ischemic related diseases".
The results finding of all studies confirmed that consumption of green tea is associated with favorable outcomes with respect to risk of cardiovascular disease as well as expression of various serum markers in the compilation of how green tea initiated protective activity against CVD.

Phytochemical 3,3'-Diindolylmethane Speeds Up Wound Healing
Wound healing is a natural process to repair the wound or cut through a number of stages.
In the first stage, after receiving the message from the central nervous system, the immune first line of defense white blood cells stimulate the production of blood palettes to the site of damage to cover the wound and activate the protein associated with the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines to fight off the micro pathogens trying to enter the body.
Under normal condition, proteins associated with the production of anti-inflammation cytokines may also switch to proinflammatory cytokines, depending on the size and location of the wound.
Overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines in this phase can cause the death of nearby healthy cells, leading to the formation of a scar.
Most microbial invaders are stopped at the acute phase of infection.
The wound healing process is divided into four overlapping phases: hemostasis, inflammatory, proliferative, and maturation.
Any interruption of the stage of wound healing also can lead to imbalanced production and dissolving of collagens in the site, inducing the formation of scars.
3,3'-Diindolylmethane or DIM are phytochemicals derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol, belonging to the group of Indoles, found abundantly in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and kale, etc.
In the urgency of finding a natural compound for speed-up wound healing without side effects, researchers evaluated 3,3'-diindolylmethane (DIM), a natural small-molecule compound involved in the repairing effects of hucMSCs on a deep second-degree burn injury rat model.
Where human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hucMSCs) has been used in the laboratory as a promising therapeutic tool in regenerative medicine.
HucMSCs pretreatment of 50 μM of DIM exhibited desirable repairing effects compared to the untreated hucMSCs.
In vivo, DIM enhanced hucMSCs in tissue regeneration by activation of proteins that pass signals into a cell through cell surface receptors.
Furthermore, DIM-primed hucMSCs (DIM-hucMSCs) also promotes tissue regeneration by suppressing the inhibition of β-catenin that impairs the healing effects.
Moreover, DIM promoted the Wnt11 expression associated with all regeneration stages in hucMSC-derived exosomes.
Decreased expression of Wnt11 showed to inhibited β-catenin activation.
Based on the findings, DIM enhanced tissue regeneration after wound by promoting the genes associated with the healing process.
Dr. Shi H the lead scientist said, "DIM promotes the stemness of hucMSCs through increased exosomal Wnt11 autocrine signaling, which provides a novel strategy for improving the therapeutic effects of hucMSCs on wound healing".
Taken altogether, 3,3'-Diindolylmethane derived from the indole-3-carbinol may be considered a supplement for speed-up wound healing, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

The Kitchen Spice Turmeric Inhibits Parameters Associated with the Onset of Stomach/GastricCancer
Cancer is a group of medical conditions caused by the irregular cell growth in the tissue of specific organ due to the alternation of cell DNA.
The stomach located between the esophagus and the small intestine is a muscular, hollow and an important organ of the digestive tract.
Stomach/gastric cancer is a cancerous condition characterized by abnormal growth of the mucus-producing cells of the inner lining of the stomach. At the advanced stage, after growing in size, over time cancer cells can invade other healthy tissue or organ by traveling a distance away from the stomach, leading to secondary metastasis.
Adenocarcinoma arisen from the glands in the mucosa is the most common type of stomach cancer associated with
* Superficial spreading
It is an early stage of cancer and tends to be less aggressive.
* Polyploid
Cancer grows in a pattern like a polyp and is less aggressive.
*Infiltrating
Cancer grows in infiltrating pattern into the stomach wall and is more aggressive.
* Linitis plastica
Cancer grows diffusivity throughout the whole wall of the stomach.
According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in the US, approximately
27,510 cases of stomach cancer will be diagnosed in 2019, including 17,230 men and 10,280 women.
Sadly, 11,140 people will also die from stomach cancer in 2019 including 6,800 men and 4,340 women.
Most cases of stomach cancer are diagnosed in older adults with an average age of 68 and over.
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
On finding a potential ingredient for the treatment of gastric cancer, researchers examined the effect of curcumin in an animal model.
The study included BALB/C mice grafted with a mouse gastric adenocarcinoma cell line (MFC) fed with different doses of curcumin after grafting.
According to the tested assays,
* Tumor growth (size and weight) was significantly inhibited by curcumin treatment, compared to controls.
* The apoptotic rate of gastric cancer cells was significantly increased in the curcumin treatment group.
* Splenocyte cells from mice treated with curcumin exhibited higher cytolytic effects on MFC cancer cells compared to those treated with saline.
* Furthermore, the curcumin treatment group also inhibited the expression of pathways associated with oxidative stress-induced inflammation(STAT3), the promotion of tumor growth and metastasis(HIF-1α,), poor prognosis, and clinical outcome (DEC1), and angiogenesis( VEGF).
Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "curcumin inhibits the proliferation of gastric carcinoma by inducing the apoptosis of tumor cells, activating immune cells to secrete a large number of cytokines, and down-regulating the DEC1, HIF-1α, VEGF and STAT3 signal transduction pathways".
Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of stomach/gastric cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Green Tea and Its Bioactive Polyphenols Epigallocatechin-3 Gallate (EGCG) in Attenuated Risk and Treatment of Hepatitis B
Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reduced risk and treatment of hepatitis B, some scientists suggested.
Hepatitis B is a viral infection of acute and chronic liver disease, caused by a double-stranded DNA virus HBV transmitted through infected blood, semen, or other body fluid.
According to the statistic, positive carriers among Canadian is estimated to be 0.5% to 1.0%., depending on ethnicity.
According to the evaluation of the effect of green tea bioactive polyphenols epigallocatechin-3 gallate (EGCG) and risk of hepatitis B, application of the phytochemical inhibited HBV replication in the testing Hep3B2.1-7 hepatocellular carcinoma cell line, through a significant effect in reduced prevalence of liver damage caused by hepatitis B virus.
Interesting, injection of EGCG at the dose of less than 100 μM in the observed liver cancer cell line showed no effect in induced cell apoptosis and decreased proliferation but exhibited a strong effect in ameliorated expression of surface antigen of the hepatitis B virus (HBsAg) and antigen of hepatitis B virus circulated in infected blood (HBeAg) levels found by the ELISA method and the polymerase chain reaction (PCR)assay.
Further differentiation in different HepG2 2.2.15 cells to compare the effects of green tea with standard antiretroviral medication lamivudine (3TC), researchers indicated that administration of EGCG shows significant inhibition of viral proliferation through the attenuated expression of levels of HBsAg and HBeAg in the supernatant and extracellular HBV DNA in a dose- and time-dependent manner. At doses of 50-200 μg/ml EGCG displayed strong effects in compared to lamivudine (3TC) at a dose of 200 μg/ml.
More importantly, the application of EGCG also suppressed the extracellular HBV DNA, a nutrient source for viral cell proliferation and survival through attachment, aggregation, and stabilization of microcolonies.
The results of the experiments pointed out that green tea EGCG consists of a potential anti-HBV activity with low toxicity.
Additional investigation of green tea EGCG effect in the early stages of infection caused by four different Hepatitis B virus genotypes A and D also found that at dose of more than 80%, the phytochemical inhibited both DMSO-differentiated HuS-E/2 cells and HA-NTCP-expressing Huh7 cells involved cancer cell process in early stage of proliferation through induced protein degradation and ameliorated serum of transferrin.(the iron-binding blood plasma glycoproteins that control the level of free iron in biological fluids)which is considered as a liver fibrosis biomarker in patients with chronic hepatitis B.
However, Treatment of cells with EGCG had no effect on HBV genome replication or virion secretion and the characteristic of HBV virion and the expression of known HBV entry factors were unaltered outside of the host before attacking the liver tissue.
All these results suggested that the green tea-derived molecule EGCG potently inhibits HBV entry and could be used in prevention and treatment of Hepatitis B. Intake of green tea supplement should be taken with to prevent overdoses cause of acute liver toxicity.

In other words, ROS includes a number of reactive molecules and free radicals derived from molecular oxygen, including peroxides, superoxide, hydroxyl radical, singlet oxygen, and alpha-oxygen.
Free radicals used to interchange with ROS with unstable nature are atoms with an unpaired electron in the outermost ring. Therefore, in order for them to maintain stable, free radicals must intercept or donate an electron to or from the stable atoms respectively, leading a domino's effect that can not be stopped until all outermost ring electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.
Long-term overexpression of free radicals compared to antioxidants can result in oxidative stress, a leading cause of protein, lipid and cellular damage.
Believe it or not, free radical levels in a moderate amount are necessary to enhance the body functioning, including vascular relaxation.
By balancing the ratio of free radicals and antioxidant may be the best way to avoid the development of chronic illness associated with oxidative stress.
However, long-term expression of oxidative stress has been found to induce several chronic diseases, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and cancer.
Dr. RC Petersen, the lead scientist wrote, "When O2 is absent during periods of irregular hypoxia in mitochondrial energy synthesis, the generation of excess electrons can develop free radicals or excess protons can produce acid. Free radicals formed by limited O2 can damage lipids and proteins and greatly increase molecular sizes in growing vicious cycles to reduce oxygen availability even more for mitochondria during energy synthesis".
And, "Further, at adequate free-radical concentrations a reactive crosslinking unsaturated aldehyde lipid breakdown product can significantly support free-radical polymerization of lipid oils into rubbery gel-like solids and eventually even produce a crystalline lipid peroxidation with the double bond of O2".
The result clearly suggested developing free-radical inhibitor may some days be used for the medical treatments in many pathologies such as cancer, atherosclerosis, diabetes, infection/inflammation and also aging.
Betanin is phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.
With an aim to discover a potential ingredient for the inhibition of the expression of free radicals, researchers examined the effect of betanin, one of the beetroot major components, on ROS production.
In vitro, incubation of neutrophils with betanin in the concentration range 2-500 µM showed a significant reduction of ROS production by 15-46%, depending on the ROS detection assay and increase of antioxidant capacity.
Furthermore, betanin did not affect the activity of caspase-3 activity in programming cell death, in resting neutrophils, but significantly enhanced the antioxidant enzyme activity in stimulated neutrophils.
In other words, betanin inhibited the free radical activity in the initiation of cytotoxicity through its antioxidant activity.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "The results indicate that betanin may be responsible for the effect of beetroot products on neutrophil oxidative metabolism and its consequences".
In organophosphates (OP), a pesticide commonly utilized in agricultural and domestic use, side effects in different body tissues, researchers conducted a joint study led by the Maragheh University of Medical Sciences, to assess whether betanin (a natural pigment) is able to mitigate some OPs-induced hepatotoxicity in primary rat hepatocytes.
According to the outcome, betanin (25μM) significantly increased cell viability, plummeted ROS formation and LPO, restored cellular GSH reservoirs.
Betanin (25μM) not only protects the body tissue against the overexpression of free radicals induced by OP but also prevents the expression of oxidative stress in the liver tissues through stimulating the production of the antioxidant enzyme from the host.
Dr. Ahmadian E, the lead scientist wrote, "the potential protective role of betanin in OPs-induced hepatotoxicity in which the mechanism appears to be inhibition of ROS formation and mitochondrial protection".
Taken altogether, betanin may be considered supplements for the prevention of the overexpression ROS, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of betanin in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Green tea In Modulated Fat Metabolism
Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reduced abnormal fat metabolism, some scientists suggested.
Fat metabolism is a biological process converted lipid intake to energy for the body needs through breaking down fat into glycerol and fatty acids before being absorbed by the intestines.
In the evaluation of the mechanisms of actions of EGCG on bile acid homeostasis and lipid metabolism of green tea bioactive polyphenol (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), researchers conducted a study included male C57BL/6J mice fed with a low-fat diet, a high-fat western-style diet or a high-fat Western-style diet containing 0.32% green tea bioactive polyphenol (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), found that at 17 weeks of experiment, mice group fed with EGCG exhibits a strong effect in reduced body weight gain, mesenteric fat mass, serum cholesterol and severity of fatty liver.
Additional analysis indicated that green tea reduced expression above parameters was a result of significantly elevated the mRNA levels of cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase initiated by cholesterol in inhibition of bile acid synthesis in cholesterol metabolism, thus attenuated absorption of lipid.
Injection of green tea EGCG also increased the level of HMG-CoA reductase in inhibited cholesterol synthesis, biliary lipid secretion, and elevated blood cholesterol through activation of low-density lipoprotein receptors which play an important role of limiting step in lipid synthesis.
Moreover, green tea EGCG also elevated scavenger receptor class B type 1 (SRB1) with functions as a receptor for high-density lipoprotein in meditating the uptake of HDL-derived cholesterol and cholesteryl ester in the liver as well as modulating and regulating certain pathways and networks involved cellular lipids in biological systems.
Dr. Huang J, the lead scientist in the joint study at the State University of New Jersey, said, "The intestinal bile acid content was significantly decreased by EGCG, while fecal excretion of bile acids, cholesterol, and total lipids were increased" and "EGCG decreases bile acid reabsorption, results in lower intestinal bile acid levels, which further decreased the absorption of lipids".
Further differentiation of the green tea effect to examine the on lipid levels associated with obesity in C57BL/6J mice fed a normal diet (ND), HFD and HFD with GT for 12 weeks, group with green tea extract and HFD expression a significant alternation of levels of several lipid metabolites observed by the partial least squares discriminant analysis score plot.
Mice group fed with high-fat diet demonstrated decreased levels of lysophospholipids (LPLs) (lysophosphatidylcholine, lysophosphatidylethanolamine and lysophosphatidylserine) which show a negative correlation with triglyceride hydrolysis and increased fat absorption in compared to normal diet group. These alternations were not found in mice group fed with HFD plus green tea.
Alternation of lysophospholipid was associated with a substantial impact on lysophospholipid metabolism, in the contribution of the onset or progression of obesity.
The restoration of lysophospholipids (LPLs) by green tea extract caused by long term high-fat diet may be an indication of how green tea reduced expression of inflammation, insulin resistance, and fatty liver disease in obesity.
Interestingly, in the observation of injection of green tea extract in the regulation of hepatic fat metabolism in 36 male chickens fed GTPs at a daily dose of 0, 80 or 160 mg/kg of body weight for 4 weeks, researchers at the joint study lead by the Anhui Agricultural University, suggested that oral administration of green tea polyphenols (GTPs) significantly improves lipid metabolism through reduced hepatic lipid content and abdominal fat mass and abdominal fat mass accumulation which were correlated to onset and progression of overweight and obesity.
Additionally, the application also expressed a strong effect in the phosphorylation levels of AMP-activated protein kinase α (AMPKα) which play an important role in skeletal muscle fatty acid utilization and in regulating growth and reprogramming metabolism, and Acetyl-CoA carboxylase 1 (ACACA) in modulation of fat cell cycle stages and cytokinesis, thus reducing fat synthesis and production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
More importantly, green tea polyphenol also altered the mRNA levels and enzymatic activities in the suppressed expression of enzymes involved PUFA in the liver in stimulated lipid synthesis and fat oxidation.
Taken together, green tea containing a high amount of bioactive polyphenols, such as catechins may be considered as a functional food to reduce the onset and progression of overweight and obesity. However, the intake of green tea extract should be taken with care as acute liver toxicity has been reported in some cases.

Healthy Food Tomato Protects The Integrity of Neurons Against Neurological Disorders in Vivo
Neurological disorders are class of diseases associated with the brain, the spinal cord including the nerves that connect them.
Most common diseases of neurological disorders are dementia, including ALS. PD, Alzheimer's disease, birth defects of the brain and spinal cord, brain injury and tumor.
Back pain associated with the related nerve damage is one of the common complaints in the US that send many patients to seek help from their doctor. Believe it or not, 80% of the US population will experience back pain at some time in their lives.
There is no single cause of neuro-dysfunction. Lifestyle, infections, genetics, and nutrition-related disease, environment, and physical injuries have been found to some major prevalent factors that induce the onset of neurological abnormalities.
Furthermore, neurological disorders have been found to facilitate psychological symptoms such as anxiety and depression and physical symptoms, depending totally on the neurons affected, including partial or complete paralysis muscle weakness seen on post-stroke patients, difficulty reading and writing and poor cognitive abilities such as patients with dementia.
According to the American Addiction Center, if you experience some of the below symptoms persistently, inclduing headaches, blurry vision, persistent fatigue, changes in behavior, numbness in the legs or arms, changes in coordination or balance weakness, slurred speech and tremors, you should seek help from the professionals immediately, as these may be the first signs of neurological disorders.
Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.
With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of neurological inflammatory disease, researchers examined phytochemical lycopene isolated from tomatoes against experimental Parkinson's disease (PD).
The study included PD mice induced by 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) oral administration of different doses (5, 10 and 20 mg/kg/day).
All doses showed a strong effect in protecting MPTP induced depletion of striatal dopamine (DA) and its metabolites in a dose-dependent manner.
Application of all doses also attenuated MPTP-induced oxidative stress and motor abnormalities in mice treated with MPTP.
Furthermore, according to the western blot assay, lycopene protected the neurons against MPTP induced apoptosis through its antioxidant and antiapoptotic properties.
In other words, lycopene in different doses exerted a PD protective activity by restoring the neurochemicals, neuron apoptosis caused by overexpression of free radicals.
Based on the findings, researchers said, " lycopene reverses neurochemical deficits, oxidative stress, apoptosis and physiological abnormalities in PD mice and offers promise strategy in the treatment of this neurodegenerative disease".
Moreover, in Alzheimer's disease (AD), associated with neuroinflammation characterized by glial activation and release of proinflammatory mediators, researchers examined the efficacy of lycopene against β-Amyloid1-42 (Aβ1-42)-induced learning and memory impairment in an animal model.
In selected induced Aβ1-42 bilaterally followed by treatment with lycopene or rivastigmine for 14 days, lycopene remediated Aβ-induced learning and memory deficits in a dose-dependent manner.
Additionally, lycopene treated group showed to ameliorate the side effects of Aβ1-42-induced mitochondrial dysfunction along with a surge of proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, TGF-β, and IL-1β) and protein associated with inflammatory signaling and neuron apoptosis.
Dr. Sachdeva AK, the lead scientist after taking other factors into account, wrote, "The amelioration of Aβ1-42-induced spatial learning and memory impairment by lycopene could be linked, at least in part, to the inhibition of NF-κB activity and the down-regulation of expression of neuroinflammatory cytokines, suggesting that lycopene may be a potential candidate for AD treatment".
Taken altogether, tomatoes processed abundantly bioactive ingredient lycopene may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of angiotensin caused by oxidative stress, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Alliin Inhibits the Onset of Neuro-Degenerative Diseases in Vitro
Neuroprotection is an action induced the preservation of neuronal structure and/or function, including the use of medicines and herbs.
In other words, neuroprotection protects the neuronal integrity against the reduction in the rate of neuronal loss over time, particularly in neurodegenerative disease.
Neurodegenerative disease is the class of condition associated with the progressive loss of neuron occurred mostly in older adults, including dementia, with the most common being Alzheimer`s disease (AD).
According to the statistic, dementia affects over 47.5 million people worldwide, approximately 58 percent are living within low and middle-income countries.
Believe it or not, 5.8 million Americans of all ages are living with Alzheimer's dementia in 2019 and two-thirds of people with Alzheimer's disease are women.
Conventionally, there is no cure for dementia. The purpose of the medications that are used for the treatment of dementia is to improve dementia symptoms and slow down the progression of the disease.
Some researchers concern that Alzheimer's disease in people younger than the age of 60 was up 5 percent over the past few decades may be correlated to the promotion of a high-fat diet in the US.
Dr. Ruan Y, the lead scientist wrote, "A higher dietary saturated fat intake was significantly associated with an increased risk of 39% and 105% for AD (RR: 1.39; 95% CI: 1.00, 1.94) and dementia (RR: 2.05; 95% CI: 1.06, 3.98), respectively".
And, "Dose-response analysis indicated a 4 g/day increment of saturated fat intake was related to 15% higher risk of AD (RR: 1.15; 95% CI: 1.01, 1.31)".
Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide, a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.
In the urgency to discover a natural and potential compound for the treatment of neurodegenerative disease, scientists examined the alliin neuroprotective activity.
In vitro, alliin exerted a significant effect to protect neuronal cells integrity and viability against beta-amyloid (A) toxicity and apoptosis.
Furthermore, also in vitro, alliin inhibited oxidative stress caused by overexpression of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cells in facilitating several neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease (AD).
In lipopolysaccharide- (LPS-) stimulated 3T3-L1 used in biological research on adipose tissue, incubation in a period of 24 h together with 100 μmol/L alliin, alliin prevented the increase of proinflammatory cytokines in the liver, muscle, heart and brain cells through its antioxidant activity.
The inhibition of inflammation of alliin was attributed to the decreased expression of the ERK1/2 pathway involved in the expression of oxidative stress and inflammation.
In other words, alliin protects the brain cells by suppressing the LPS inflammatory signals by generating an anti-inflammatory gene expression.
Taken altogether, alliin may be considered supplements for the neuroprotection, depending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of alliin in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
