Herbal aloe vera may be used for speeding up the skin wound healing with no side effects, some researchers suggested.
Wound healing is the natural process of repair of skin damage and injury.
The process of skin healing in humans is gone through several stages. First, the immune system after sensing the skin wound activates the immune first-line defense stimulating the constriction of the blood vessel to reduce blood flow, activate platelets, and many different clotting factors to cover the wound area.
Then, the white blood cells also up-regulate the proteins associated with the production of proinflammatory cytokines to the site of infection to kill off all the invasive organisms.
In most cases, due to the overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines, patients may experience symptoms of fever, and localized pain, redness, and swelling.
Furthermore, the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in some case can cause the death of nearby healthy cells, leading to the formation of irreversible scars, as seen in the liver.
After the inflammatory phase, the new blood vessels are formed and the new granulation tissues are built.
The final phase of the wound healing is involved in the remodeling of collagen from type III to type I cellular activity reduces.
If the process of skin healing is interrupted, it may lead to abnormal cell membrane repair, a major cause of skin scars.
MG53 is a protein involved in tissue repair and regeneration and also considered a facilitator of rapid injury repair, a mediator of cell migration, and a modulator of myofibroblast differentiation during wound healing. The defection and down-regulation of MG53 protein may delay wound healing and abnormal scarring.
Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan.
It has become very popular for commercial cultivation due to its health benefits. Aloe vera has been used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of disease, including wound, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes, and elevated cholesterol, etc. It is also one of many popular herbs studied in scientific ways with some conflicting results.
The ten main areas of chemical constituents of Aloe vera include amino acids, anthraquinones, enzymes, minerals, vitamins, lignins, monosaccharide, polysaccharides, salicylic acid, saponins, and sterols.
They all work together in a synergistic way to create healing and health-giving benefits, according to Gertrude Baldwin in the article of THE BENEFITS OF THE USE OF ALOE VERA IN HERBAL PREPARATIONS.
On finding the natural compound or remedy for speeding up the treatment of wound healing, researchers examined the efficacy of aloe vera through searching the data of online medical literature.
Only controlled clinical trials for burn healing were included. There were no restrictions on any language of publication. Only 4 Four with a total of 371 patients were included in this review.
According to the meta-analysis using the duration of wound healing as an outcome measure, the healing time of the aloe vera group was 8.79 days shorter than those in the control group.
The cumulative evidence support that aloe vera can be an effective intervention used in burn wound healing for first to second-degree burns.
Furthermore, in order to maximize the effect of Aloe vera in wound healing, researchers examined the formulate and optimize a herbal gel of Aloe vera extract containing Carbopol 934 as a gelling agent.
During the observation of differences in wound healing between the various treatments when compared to the control group. researchers found that tissue hyperplasia was lower in the control group compared to the other treated groups.
In animals group treated with gel, exerted an 80.14% healing up to 14(th) day compared to the untreated group I (control) animals of showed 52.68%.
Control group animals also showed inflammation and pus formation up to 5(th) day of study, compared to none in the treatment group.
These results supported the use of topical application of Carbopol 934 gel containing Aloe vera extract on the healing of skin wounds.
Taken altogether, herbal Aloe vera may be considered a functional topical remedy for the treatment of skin wound, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.
