Turmeric, the Natural Remedy for the Treatment of Metabolic Syndrome (MS)

Scientists may have found a natural herbal remedy for the treatment of metabolic syndrome with no side effects, according to studies.

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes including too much fat around the waist, high blood sugar and cholesterol and pressure, high triglycerides and low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol.

If you have any 3 of the aforementioned conditions, you are at a higher risk of having CVD and diabetes.

The exact causes of metabolic syndrome are unidentified. However, researchers suggested eating too many calories, particularly in high-fat diet, physical inactivity, and excessive weight gain are some of the most common and prevalent factors in elevated the risk of metabolic syndrome in the Western world.

Most people with metabolic syndrome do not experience any symptoms until the condition progression into a later stage, overtimes, leading to insulin resistance and plagues built-up on the wall of the arteries.

Other risk factors increased the risk of metabolic syndrome include aging, race, family history, long-term hormone imbalance such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), gestational diabetes.

Some researchers in the concern about the widespread metabolic syndrome in obese patients suggested that the promotion of the Western diet over the past many decades may be one of the culprits in inducing the onset of metabolic syndrome.

Dr. the lead scientist in the cardiovascular disease team said, "The cellular mechanisms of metabolic syndrome include mitochondrial overload, de novo lipogenesis, hepatic insulin resistance, and hyperinsulinemia, reactive oxygen species formation, endoplasmic reticulum stress, and the unfolded protein response"

And, "Specific alterations of the Western Diet uniquely drive this process and are unrelated to calories. These alterations include too little fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, and micronutrients, and too many omega-6 fatty acids, trans-fats, branched-chain amino acids, ethanol, and fructose. The food industry invokes personal responsibility while denying any corporate responsibility and citing scientific, policy, and social arguments. However, their responses obfuscate the scientific truth in order to obviate their culpability".

The findings suggested that obesity is a marker of the metabolic syndrome rather than a cause, However, if you are obese, your risk of metabolic syndrome increases substantially.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
In the urgency to find a natural remedy for the treatment of metabolic syndrome, researchers compared the clinical efficacy of black seeds and turmeric alone and its co-administration in lower doses among patients with metabolic syndrome (MS).

The double-blind-randomized-controlled trial included healthy males (n=250), who screened positive for MS, were randomized to either black seeds (1.5g/day), turmeric (2.4g/day), its combination (900mg black seeds and 1.5g turmeric/day) or placebo for 8 weeks.
At 4 weeks, compared to baseline, turmeric alone significantly improved a number of certain conditions of metabolic syndrome such as body-mass-index (BMI), body-fat-percent (BF%), waist circumference (WC).

Combined with black seeds, turmeric improved all parameters except HDL-cholesterol with lower fasting blood glucose (FBG) and LDL-cholesterol, compared to placebo.

At the 8 weeks, turmeric reduced LDL-cholesterol and c-reactive protein (CRP), a marker of inflammation, and the combination group with 60% dose of the individual herbs showed an improvement in all parameters compared to baseline.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The combination of Black seeds and Turmeric can, therefore, be recommended with lifestyle modification as a starting point for patients with MetS to halt its future complications and progression".

In order to confirm the efficacy of black seeds used combined with turmeric for the treatment of metabolic syndrome, researchers once against conducted a joint study using a fructose-fed rat model of MS.

in vivo, different doses of black seeds and turmeric, individually and in combination, were administered to fructose-fed rats for up to 6 weeks with characteristic features of MS.

At 3 weeks of the treatment, turmeric lowered low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, compared to coadministration which reduced both high blood pressure and hypertriglyceridemia.

At 6 weeks, the coadministration of both herbs, at half the doses of individual herbs, was the most effective in preventing hypertension, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, hyperinsulinemia, and endothelial dysfunction compared to those of individual herbs.

The results strongly suggested that turmeric used alone or combined with black seeds may be considered a functional food or formula for the prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome by inhibiting the conditions in the cluster of the MS, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
