Jing Jie or Hei Jing Jie or Jia Su is also known as shizonepeta. The acrid, slightly warm and fragrant herb has been used in TCM as anti bacteria, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory agent and to treat influenza and cold, fever, headache, swollen and painful throat, etc., as it expels Wind, releases the Exterior, stops bleeding, etc., by enhancing the functions of lung and liver channels.

1. Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities
In the investigation of the antioxidative and anti-inflammatory activities of aqueous extracts of Schizonepeta tenuifolia Briq. (STE),l showed that STE displayed radical scavenging and reducing activity, as well as liposome protection activity. In addition, the anti-inflammatory effects of STE could be related to tissue NO and tumor necrosis factor a (TNF-α) suppression, and associated with the reduction of lipid peroxidation and an increase in antioxidant enzyme activities including catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase in vivo, accordingf to‘Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of aqueous extracts of Schizonepeta tenuifolia Briq” by Wang BS, Huang GJ, Tai HM, Huang MH.(1).

2. Proinflammatory cytokine expression and regulation

In the searching for new anti-pruritic drugs we screened methanol extracts of 33 herbal medicines which have been used for cutaneous diseases for their antipruritic activity using substance P (SP) as a pruritogen in mice, found that the aerial part of Schizonepeta tenuifolia Briq. and the fruit of Cnidium monnieri (L.) In the investigation of the effective constituents of arresting bleeding in Schizonepeta tenuifolia(benth.) Briq, showed that isolated the chemical constituents from Schizonepeta tenuifola(Benth.)
